00117th uh board of education uh meeting to order. Uh before I start uh I've done it myself and sometimes I do forget. Please, if you have a cell phone, I know we all want to have an emergency, please silence it. Uh tonight's meeting may go a little bit slower uh as I have three new members to the board and at any point the newer members as well as those that are here as well. If there's a question of something you don't understand to the new board members please stop me and I'd love to explain it to you or have the person that's responsible for that area. Uh with that in mind for the new board members I want you to keep it I am a strict uh politarian and we will follow Robert's rules of

002order. Uh, everyone will have a chance to speak at all times. Uh, please do not overspeak anyone. Just raise your hand. I'll point to you and that means I've acknowledged it and I'll take you in order. I will also allow you to speak, but I will not allow uh, you know, a argument at any point ever to incur. Uh, you will speak through the chair and you'll give each person an opportunity to speak. So, I just want you to know that. Again, I want to emphasize I will call on everyone. I will not make a comment on any subject until everyone's had a chance to speak and I will very rarely call the question. Extremely rare. I never shut down debate. I don't care how long it goes. With that, Kayleie, will you please uh

003call the role? >> Jim F >> here. >> Lorraine Rosner >> here. >> Anthony Smearagino >> here. >> Kate Coutach >> here. >> Rich O' Conor >> here. >> Patricia Men >> here. Jason N >> here. >> Carol Ponazo >> here. >> Joey Palachi >> here. Also in attendance, Dr. Ken Sarinich, Jacqueline Tulings, Kristen Santilly, Glenn Newman, John Calhoun, Tracy Hussy, Brock Gidis, and Stephanie Sanborn. >> Please rise everyone for the pledge. Our union president, I believe Joanne, will you lead us in the pledge? I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> With that, the first item on the agenda is the movement of the consent agenda. Um, are there any

004changes or removals to the consent agenda? Seeing hearing none, I'll need a motion to move the agenda. >> So move. So moved by Miss Coutach. Is there a second? >> I second. >> All right. It's a coin flip. Miss Razner gets it. >> Any discussion on the consent agenda? All those in favor state by saying I. I. >> Any being opposed? None. Motion carries unanimously. Okay. Let's go to presentations and recognition. I believe we have two schools of distinction. Is that correct, sir? >> Yes, sir. Uh our school system has many ways that we recognize achievement. Um many fabulous ways across the board. Uh none is better than when we see academic achievement in our schools because that is the basis for why we are an entity is to educate children. And the state has

005various levels of achievement. We have our own. Um but one thing that the state does with the accountability measures is based on um how a school grows over time they would designate a school of distinction based on that growth. I am happy to recognize uh two schools in our district have achieved that recognition um from the state of Connecticut being recognized as schools of distinction. Those two schools are Sunnyside School and Lawn Hill School. Congratulate them. Well, before I invite the principles up here for a nice photo op hop, I I just want to say a few things about the the two schools. Um, as we know, Sunnyside School uh last year had the honor of of um being recognized as a national blue ribbon of distinction, which was a great achievement for our school

006district. Um and then to come back the following year and be a school of distinction is just a testimonies of the of the hard work that's happening and again um throughout the school system. But Sunnyside is a reflection of that. Um unfortunately to say that the school the national blue ribbon program um no longer exists uh that was that was uh defranchised um by the current federal government. Um and but if that program still existed, uh the scores that Long Hill School put up this year would make them uh eligible um uh component for me to recognize them as well and send that to the state. Um unfortunately, we can't do that, but what we can do is just recognize Long Hill for putting up those similar and same numbers that Sunnyside did last year.

007um and just show that these two schools as shining stars of the achievement of all of our staff um in Shel in the Shelton public school system, but particularly at these two schools. Uh I do have certificates that I will be presenting the principles, but I think it's best and most appropriate for me to visit the schools where the students and staff are and present those tickets to them at their school sites, which I'll be doing before the break. But if I can have the two principles of the school join me up here, we'd like to just take a little picture or a photo op uh based on your achievement. Oh, Yeah. YEAH. That's all for presentations. All right. >> Congratulations, ladies. Thank you. We greatly appreciate what you're doing. To our uh student uh

008representatives, you guys get to flip the coin. Who'd like to go first? Before you go, um as you know, we have a long agenda. You are welcome to stay and participate or leave whenever you want. We're going to go into executive session probably right after this. So, it's your call. >> Um, so, hi everybody. Um, just so I'm going to go over some past events that have happened o across the district over the last month. Um, at the high school we had adaptations, our winter drama presentation. Uh, there was three shows over the course of last week, late last week. Uh, it was a great success. A lot of people showed up. Great show. Um, we also had a lot of students earn multiple all SEC and all SEC academic honors including So, um, so

009that's great. Um, cross our high school clubs, multiple fundraisers. Um, I know a club's doing a bake sale, another one's doing restaurant fundraisers. So, um, a lot of good activities happening around clubs. We also had breakfast with Santa across elementary schools. Um, we also had a collaboration between SHS and the uh the counseling and the athletic department for recruitment for college athletics. Um, that's something that hasn't happened, I believe, in over a decade. So, that was some something great that we did. Um, a lot of students gave great feedback on that. And finally, college decisions are underway. We've already had some good acceptances, but I'll hold off on bragging until until we get all our acceptances back. Yep. And then looking forward to the future, uh this week, this past week, and coming week, we

010have our elementary school holiday concerts. And then January 8th, we have our high school winter concert. Uh in mid January, before our next meeting, we'll have midterms in the end of our semester classes. And our uh junior and senior students who qualified for National Honor Society, recently completed their applications. And then at the end of January, we'll have a banquet to honor those who were accepted. And yeah, the seniors are starting to hear back from their colleges, which is very exciting. Thank you, Kayleie. Was there anybody signed up for public comment? Make a secondary call for any public comment. Make a third call. Being no public comment, we'll move off. Uh we are going to audible. Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to shoot down to the bottom of the uh I'll need a motion from

011one of the members to go into executive session uh with uh Franciso with regards to and also the superintendent. Anyone else? >> Finance director. >> Who's that? >> Finance director. >> Oh, and the f and uh finance director and the members of the board. And we're going to recess over to uh the conference room. >> Motion to go into executive session. purpose of discussing the contract. >> Second. >> Motion made by K Coutach. Um second by Miss Rosner. Uh for the other members, just so you know, uh motion to go into executive session is not debatable. All those in favor state by saying I. >> I. Any being opposed? Motion carries. We're recessed at uh I
