Second by uh Joey Pelgi. Are there any other nominations for vice chair? Are there any other nominations for vice chair? Last call. Are there any other nominations for vice chair? Sensing none, we will cast a vote for the Anthony Smeargalino for vice
chair. All right. All in favor for Anthony Singer Galuno for vice chair. >> Is there any opposed? Motion carries. Lastly, I'll take a motion to nominate for nominations for secretary. >> I'd like to make a motion uh to nominate Mrs. Rosner for secretary. >> Second. >> Motion made by Anthony Smegalino for Mrs. Rosner as secretary. So moved. Next we have presentations. There is none tonight. Okay. our student board of
education representatives reports. >> Uh hi everyone. Um I'm Brock Gus. So I'm just going to talk about what's happened over the since last meeting. Um so our number one biggest event would probably be homecoming. Um we had over 400 people attend the event. It was a big success. Um there was food, drinks. Um a lot of people had a great time. I personally had a great time. So it was uh a great event. Um, a lot of student body that went, loved it. Um, all fall sports have now ended besides from football. Football will play their final game, which is also senior night on Thanksgiving at 10:30 a.m. Um, which will be a home game. We haven't had a Thanksgiving home game in a while against AMD. So, that should be a good game. Um,
we also had at every single one of our schools, we had a at least a Veterans Day event. Um, I personally went to the high school one. We had a Q&A session with a bunch of veterans. Um Hershey, who is a former student representative, was there in her West Point uniform, so you know, that was cool and everything. Um it was very informative and um it was just good and yeah um and then finally we had our SHs open house. Um all the eighth graders who are interested in going to Southern High School came. Um it again also great turnout for that event. We got a bunch of positive feedback. We had over 30 student volunteers from the high school. Um we also had a bunch of staff, all of the curriculum coordinators for the
high school. And overall, again, it was just a great event. So, [clears throat] >> hi, I'm Stephanie Sanborn. I'm going to talk about a few things we're looking forward to before our next meeting. On Monday, we have our powderpuff game, which is girls flag football against AMD at AMD at 6:00. And then, as Brock mentioned, on Thanksgiving, we have our home game for football, which is senior night for football and cheer. And also during halftime, we recognize the senior members of the band and color guard. Um, on Thursday, the 11th of December to Saturday the 13th at 700 p.m. in the auditorium, we'll have our adaptations. Our uh freshman and junior show is Scooby-Doo, and the sophomore and senior show is The Great Gatsby. They've been working very hard on that. And throughout December, our
elementary schools will have their winter concerts. >> That's it. Thank you very much. Uh public comments per board policy 9323 and 9325. 5 minutes is allotted to each speaker. No BOE employee, student or community member should be defamed within public comments. Any member of the public who wish to speak briefly before the board must only comment on matters associated with the board of education's business. Uh persons wishing to address the Shelton board of educations are limited to Shelton residents, parents of current Shelton students and employees of Shelton public schools or service contracted provide pro providers of Shelton public schools. Would anyone like to make a comment? Would anybody like to make public comment? And would anybody like to make public comment? So moved. >> Okay. Next we have uh uh the uh reports on standing
committees. Um we can uh if you'd like those that were on the board or even assisted on the board would like to make any comments. Uh like example the first one a is teaching and learning committee. I I do have a report for that. >> Very good. >> Uh the teaching and learning committee met on Tuesday, November 11th. As vice chair, I ran the meeting in the absence of Amy Romano, chair. We reviewed data from the Smarter Balance assessment administered to grades 5 through 8 last spring. On the language arts assessment in grades four and six, Shelton students exceeded the state percentage who met growth targets at 74.9% and 61.9% respectively. We dipped below the state averages in grades 5, 7, and 8, which are our transition g grades when students move from school to
school with the most significant deficit in grade 5. The same grades four, and six, also exceeded the state in math, and the others were below with grade seven showing the weakest performance. Administration will be targeting learning goals in these grades for this year. We also examined results for our special needs population and noted that in grades four and six, our high needs population exceeded the state average of all students in both ELA and grades 6 and 8 in math. Next generation science assessments are administered in grades 5, 8, and 11. Both grades five and 11 exceeded the state percentage at or above goal with grade 11 exceeding significantly was 16.6% above the state percentage. The SAT or scholastic aptitude test as you may know [clears throat] as you may know is now required to be
administered during the school day to all 11th grade students in both ELA and math. Chelton students were above the state percentage of those who were meeting or exceeding goal. There is a meeting scheduled for December 9th to be determined if that will be held if there's an agenda for it. And uh we will meet in January because we always discuss new course proposals for the high school at the January meeting. >> That's it. >> Okay. Finance committee. Um I guess that would be me. I really don't have any comments up to this point on the finance committee. We'll wait until the following policy committee policy. I'll uh I'd like to move the uh policy number 5145.1 uh student privacy uh policy number 6141-321 uh policy number uh number 6141-321A policy number 6161-1 policy 5131-911 Can
I get a motion those You you also skipped one. >> Oh, did I? >> Yeah, just uh 5134. I just want to make sure that it's on the record that >> 5134. I don't have it on mine. 51. >> A revision for transportation. >> I don't have that. >> It's not on there. >> Oh, I have it on my agenda here. Okay. I apologize then. My mistake. Okay. >> I must have a outdated agenda in front of me. >> Can I have a motion for that, please? >> I'll make a motion. >> And that's to sit till the next meeting. It's the sits in the next meeting. Yes. >> Yeah. >> I'll second a motion. >> Motion made by Mrs. Rosner, second by Anthony Smegalina. >> A point of order. Just if I may, cuz
with our new board members here, just so our new board members have an understanding. So according to the bylaws that we have for policies, when the policy committee makes a revision or does a new policy, it gets presented publicly at a meeting as Mr. Nez just did, and then it would sit until the next board meeting. So, what will happen is these policies will appear in next month's consent agenda. Um, if the board does not have any issues outstanding over the course of the next month, give or take, um, with any of these policies, then you could just unanimously pass them in a consent agenda and they would move forward. If there's a policy that you'd like to discuss further, um, at the time of the board meeting when they ask for the approval of
the agenda, you can just request that that particular policy be pulled out of the consent agenda. then it will be placed in the actual agenda for discussions >> reports. Uh CES. >> Yes, I uh excuse me. CES for those of the new board members stands for cooperative educational services and I left you this information that lets you know you can read it at your leisure about all about cooperative educational services and it represents a number of towns throughout um southern Fairfield County of which we are one. I have served as the Shelton representative to the CES board for about five years now. I am currently its sitting vice president. Um, one of the biggest things that CES is moving on right now, we will host our annual legislative breakfast on Friday, December 12th at 8:30
a.m. Invitees include area legislators, superintendent, board chairs, and cess representative council members. I already have a commitment from Miss Romano that she's going to go and I spoke to Mr. Pillo last night. He's going to try and get it on his calendar. I have spoke um read that part to topics likely to be discussed include magnet school funding, special education funding, cell phones in the classroom, artificial intelligence, and teacher shortages. But the agenda is basically open to what people bring up and they want to talk to their legislators about. Director Chip Dume has spent time discussing magnet school funding deficits with Representative Leafer from the education committee and responded to emails from other legislators on the issues. Best professional development services reach recently hosted a school assessment training. Pixie faculty and staff from throughout the
region attended as well as police and other social service professionals from surrounding districts. This training presents evidence-based practices to support teams within schools to identify and respond to threats effectively. The special education department includes specialists in the area of assisted technology and argumentative communication and aiology. That's a mouthful. To provide training, consultation, and direct services to schools within their region who need these resources. The reg the regional the regional center for early learning continues to strengthen connections with surrounding communities as they continue to expand their program to ensure they are best meeting the needs of the children and families in their care and they do still have openings and and are going beyond just um Bridgeport students at this point. Early childhood development specialists facilitated nine professional learning workshops on election day for over 300
early childhood teachers. That continues to be very popular. CES awaits a response from the state regarding its request for the 2025 magnet school capital grants totaling $1.9 to $2 million which will be utilized at the 6 to6 magnet school and RCA which is regional center for the arts. Three cess buildings have had solar panels installed and get this they are noting those buildings are noting a 50% less cost of power over the last year. RCA was recently RCA being regional center for the arts and we have about 20 students who go there was recently visited by three music professors from the uhart school of music and they spent the day sharing music and discussing pursuing music at the college level. They were so impressed with the RCA students that they said any um RCA student
who goes to UHART, they will guarantee them some kind of financial help. And RCA recently held its open house for 8th grade students and expects in excess of 200 applications for next year. And it is also noted that students on this year's waiting list, which there is one, are also considered for mission for next year. And we will not meet in December. We have the legislative breakfast. We'll next meet in uh January. >> Thank you. >> May I ask a question of Miss Kotach? >> Sure. So, I'm just wondering if um the legislators that are attending this breakfast will have any comments about the dismantling of the Department of Education in Washington and how the dismantling will affect our students with disabilities and the funding that is required by um states in order to provide
it to our boards of education. I would be very interested to know how that funding is going to reach us. BA basically the topics are open to discussion so someone brings it up but people that are in attendance can comment and there's usually heated disc sometimes Dr. Deay when he's running the legislative breakfast has to urge us on topic because there's so much discussion thank you >> Dr. state uh superintendence report >> just is there a cape I don't know is there a cape report >> I I will just make the the comment under cape report before I say to my report that uh the cape cap caps conference is this Friday I will be in attendance so I'll be any information to the board that I receive from that and I'll just transition right
to the superintendent report so um first and foremost I want to congratulate all the members of the board on their newly elected positions and welcome the new board members to the board. I look forward to working with all of you and continuing the great work that we have done over the years for the Shelton public school system. Uh our new board members, I give I gave a packet tonight, a new board packet um to each of them. It includes um some of the legislation surrounding the rules and responsibilities of board members um put out by Cab. If any current board member um that was reelected would like a copy of of those, I'd be happy to provide it to you as a refresher. Um with that, uh my only comments I have to say is
I look forward to Thanksgiving game, uh which is at 10:30 a.m. on Finn Stadium. Go Gails. And um I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. >> Thank you. >> Comments uh from our board chair. Um, can you hear me? >> Yes, we can hear you. >> Apologize for being our anniversary trip. Um, I do want to literally thank you everyone for nominating to be chairman and I look forward to working with you all. Uh, I also let me turn off my speaker here, guys. Give me a second. >> We're getting a little back. >> Yeah, I'll try it. >> [clears throat] >> We're sorry guys. >> Yeah, I'm going to X [laughter] out of it. That sounds better, Jim. >> Yeah, it does. >> Is that better now? >> Yes. >> Okay. Apologize everyone. [laughter] >>
I just wanted to uh announce the chairmanships and vice chairs. Uh teaching and learning will be Kate Cout, vice chair will be Joseph. on buildings and grounds, Jason Nevice. Vice Chair, Anthony Sparino. Athletic will be Anthony and Jason Ne. Policy it will be Joseph and Lorraine Rosner finance Richard O' Conor as chair and Carol Panzio as vice chair. ES will be Kate Coutach as a representative and K will be Patty Muna. Uh Hall of Fame DOE representative will be Koutach. I'll also be sending this to Kaye hard copy if I'm not coming to it properly. >> Yeah, you might have to do that. Your your services. >> Okay, that's all I have. I look forward to working with you all and thank you again. >> Thank you, Jim. Celebrations. Celebration. [laughter] >> Any celebrations like
to discuss? >> Share. >> No birthdays. >> We don't want to. >> We're not counting birthdays. [laughter] >> We won't talk about >> No. Uh there's no communications to the board uh for I'm sorry >> it was a a late minute addition that wasn't on the agenda but we included with the board it says uh a correspondence from Grford Hospital thanking the board for its participation in the Valley goes pink ping campaign. >> So there's a copy left for all the board members. >> Okay. Okay. Next for your information enrollment report staffing report. It's included in your packet. Those are just included in your packet. >> So, it is in your packet.
