001Oh, no. I cannot go swimming. Hoffman-Boston is going to be one of the schools in Arlington that is going to host the Readers Rise program. It's a new program in Arlington that invites volunteers in the community to join our students in supporting their reading skills. >> [music] >> Our Readers Rise volunteers will be working at three of our elementary schools to start: Long Branch, Barrett, and Hoffman-Boston. The kids really like the small group or individual attention, and it's something that even the best classroom teacher just doesn't have the time to do, but I can float around in the classroom. It's a win-win situation for everybody, I think. Okay, so there's the period, so let's stop [music] and let and read on page two, and we'll go around this way. He's in here one to two
002afternoons a week, and he pulls reading groups during small group time. He works with the kids during phonics, especially our students who don't know all their letter sounds. It's important to be a good reader >> [music] >> because you need to read stuff when you're an adult, and if you don't know how to read when you're an adult, then it will be harder. And it's so fun to read chapter books because you learn new words. I like reading because we can like learn more and be smart and stuff. It's difficult [music] in our community with a lot of English language learners to give them enough one-on-one time, really practicing reading enough decodables, being read to. And so [music] I think that the more volunteers we have, the more opportunities the students will be able to
003gain from it. If Mr. Dam wasn't here, the teacher would have to do a lot of work, and we couldn't do it by ourselves. [music] We could use more volunteers for the more adults there are in the classroom, and who are are enthusiastic about learning and working with children the better. I think that it's a great thing because the more parent volunteers we have, the more community volunteers we have, the more involvement it is. So, I think that this program is a great way to get everyone involved and see how important education is.
