Mr. Kerry, >> Mr. Debbco, present, Mrs. Roberts, >> Mrs. Drew, >> Mrs. Gold >> here, >> Mr. Riley >> here, >> vice chair, Mr. Lacoli >> here, >> chairperson, Mrs. Granada, >> present, >> and Weathers, excuse me. Oh yes. Weathersfield High School student representative, Miss Anushka Gandhi here. [applause] And our newest member, the Weathersfield Public Schools Board of Ed chairperson for Charles Wright Elementary School, Miss Elizabeth Rashidu, >> present. [applause] What a great start. We always look forward to our student and staff recognition. Tonight we have an incredible sixth grader sitting next to me, our kid board of ed chair. Elizabeth is a student at Charles Wright Elementary School and her writing is on our playscapes, but I especially appreciate her last sentence and I quote, "I [snorts] will work together with my team to

make it happen." and that is how it happens." Unquote. Elizabeth, the floor is yours. The board of education is an important part of our community. It helps our schools be the best that they can be. I'm running for student board student board of ed chair, which I already am. Good girl. >> My goal, if elected, is to help fix a major issue in some of our elementary schools. Many kids at recess love to go on our playcapes. Running, climbing, or sliding, all kids love to play there. But many of our schools playcapes are falling apart. That makes them dangerous to play on, and kids can get seriously hurt. If I'm chosen to be part of the board of ed, which I am, my team will and I will come up with solutions to this problem.

Our old playscapes, the unsafe playscapes are not a problem in every elementary school. However, Charles Wright and Highest's playscapes were rebuilt in 1996. Pandler's playground hasn't been updated since 1988. Sometimes my school's playscape Sometimes on my school's playscape, pieces of metal break off or get loose because it's so old. Kids need to have safe playscapes or at recess, they have nothing to climb on and you can't really slide on gravel. It's not just during the school day that kids need playgrounds playground to play on. On a break at home, they can walk down and have some fun if they don't have a playcape in their backyard. This also gets them off their electronics and screens. Did you know that kids ages 8 to 12 spend 4 to 6 hours a day on just screens? Renewing

playgrounds might encourage kids to get out their tablets and phones and go play outside. This could relax their minds and they could show better behavior. For this problem, we need to come up with solutions. To help our school be able to pay for these new structures, we could create fundraisers to help out with the cost. Movie afternoons, dinners, comedy, and talent shows are all events that we could plan to help raise money. We could ask our school's PDO to get involved. We could also form a parent committee to ask the state for grants of money to help with the huge cost of a new playground. If I am elected, which I am, I will start working on my cause immediately. I am motivated to get it done and make our school's playscape safer for everyone.

Whether that is with the PTO or fundraisers, I will work together with my team to make it happen. [applause] Thank you, Elizabeth. And I'd also want um a shout out to the other board of edit chairs. We had Alexander Kulis from Web, Danielle Zabaranic from Emerson Williams, Brooke Cooper from Highest, Joyce Sal from Hamner, and Elizabeth from the Charles Wright. So, thank you again. Thank you. [applause] [applause] Okay, our meeting tonight continues as the 2026 board superintendent recognition and awards evening. Mr. Wendy. >> Thank you, Madam Chair. I'm going to move to the lower podium. >> Good evening everyone and welcome. We're truly excited to have all of you here tonight for the Board of Education evening of recognition and awards. Your presence speaks to the pride, care, and deep sense of community that defines

Weathersfield so well, and it means a great deal to all of us to have all of you here with us this evening to celebrate. Tonight is important. It's important to me as a superintendent. It's important to our board of education. It's important to our administration for because the ceremony allows us to honor the lifeblood of our wonderful school system, our students, our families, and our staff. >> They are the reason our schools thrive, the reasons our classrooms are filled with possibility, and the reason Weatherfield continues to be a place where children grow, achieve, and be loved. For many years, this celebration was held in November. While still extremely meaningful, that format did not allow us to recognize several groups who deserve to be lifted up in front of their community. Our teachers and paras of

the year, our retirees, and our top 10 seniors. All of these honors are bestowed towards the end of the year, and we just didn't want to have our ceremony without those wonderful uh folks that mean so much to our school district. So hence the decision to move this from November towards the end of the year. Our retirees who have given years often decades of service and love to our students. Our educators and pair professionals who ex whose excellence sets the standard for our profession. Our top 10 seniors who represent the very best of scholarship, character, and leadership. and our distinguished family members and students whose partnership and trust make everything we do possible. Each one of you plays a vital role in the story of the Weathersfield Public Schools. Tonight's our opportunity to pause, to

celebrate, and to say thank you. We're grateful that you are here and we look forward to honoring the extraordinary individuals who make this district such a special place. And before we get rolling, all of this could not have happened without our wonderful staff members, Kristen Underh Hill, Deb Murphy, and Jennifer Miller, who did a lot of the leg work and coordination to make this happen. So, thank you so much. [applause] did it all. So, our first category of awardees are our students for excellence awards as part of the superintendent uh awardee group. These are students who are not only outstanding students in the classroom, they're also outstanding citizens of Weathersfield and friends and neighbors. [applause] >> Ladies and gentlemen, how about these kids? >> [applause] [applause] >> Now we move to the parent recognition award. I'm going to call out director John. >> [applause] >> So

definitely not a person to be forgotten. It's my honor to recognize and congratulate Amber Files as this year's recipient. [applause] During Amber's time at Winsfield Transition Academy, we've had the privilege of watching her grow from a quiet, reserved student, often more comfortable observing and participating into a confident leader mentored to her peers. At the beginning of each year, students are challenged to step outside their comfort zones and try something new. At first, Amber wasn't so sure about this challenge, but little by little, she leaned in, took risks, and began to believe in herself. And then came the card business. >> Everything changed. >> Em signed her first few cards and quickly discovered a talent she didn't even realize she had. From that moment on, there was no stopping her. She not only became a keen

contributor, but also helped shape the identity of the business by creating its name, cards for all. She confidently presents the board of education and district administrators and volunteered to represent the program at craft fairs, vendor events, and the annual bike pack. Because of Amber's initiative and dedication, the car business has grown beyond our school and into the broader community. We now have nine locations. [crying] This year, Amber also challenged herself in a new way by volunteering to interview our interview our new superintendent, Mr. Whim for our student newsletter. Something I'm not sure she would have done or had the confidence to do even a year ago. And I have to say she did an outstanding job. But what truly sets Amber apart is who she is as a person. As an educator, there's nothing more

rewarding than witnessing a student discover their strengths and step into who they are meant to be. Amber has done exactly that with grace, determination, and a wonderful sense of humor. Amber, we are so proud of you. Congratulations to you and your family. [applause] >> [applause] [applause] >> Amber, I felt like I now call on board of education. But now, how about those kids? [applause] >> [applause] >> At this time, I'm going to call Principal Colin back off to kick off our parent awards. At this time, I'd like to ask Mr. L Michaels to [applause] Should I use your new bylaw term for president? All right. 028to his time as PTO president, Lou's commitment to our students and our community are seen in his advocacy for students and teachers. He has led initiatives at Hammer School such as the PTO grant program for staff to get funding from the PTO to bring needed resources and opportunities to our students. Beyond the walls of Hammer School, Blue Lou Blue served on the Weatherfield Board of Education where he extended his work on behalf of the students of all of the students of Weathersfield. Blue, we are grateful for your service to Hammer and all of the Weathers public schools. Congratulations on this very well-deserved recognition. [applause] >> [cough] [clears throat] >> Good afternoon. Night call. This is Nancy Bliss. [applause] Nancy Bles, or better known as Justin's mom, is truly deserving of the parent recognition award for

for her unwavering dedication to our students, family, and the greater Weathersville community. Her kindness, positivity, and commitment to education are evident in everything that she does. Through her leadership, volunteerism, and advocacy, she helps make Weathersfield and specifically Charles Wright a better and more welcoming place. Congratulations. [applause] Our parent from Emerson Williams, Sarah Hughes, could not make it

this evening. She had So, at this time, I'll call on Christine Leo for our parents. >> [applause] >> This is so much fun. Okay, next I'd like to call Christa Crystal Coca-Cola. [applause] High Press is excited to recognize Crystal Coca-Cola as this year's parent recipient for superintendent award. Her outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to the Highress community is awesome. Crystal has served as an advocate and leader for students, families, and staff. Since beginning as PTO secretary in 2022 and later serving as co-president, she has devoted countless hours to strengthening the school community and will continue her service as acting president for next year. Thank you again. She has helped lead meaningful initiatives and events including our end of the year ice cream social and our high crust hangout that brings families together and builds school

spirit. Crystal also played a vital role in advocating for the school referendum and supporting the vision of a new building that would benefit generations of students. And boy did we learn a lot last night. Thank you, Crystal. In every effort, she has ensured that the voices of students and families remain at the heart of decisionmaking. Her kindness, passion for education, and steady leadership has fostered pride, excitement, and optimism throughout Highest. And she truly exemplifies a compassionate leader and role model for the entire community. We're so excited, Crystal. Thank you for all you do. [applause] I would like to welcome to the front Adriana Car. [applause] Adriana Caro has been an extraordinary part of the web community throughout her seven years as a parent of two web students, Mattea and Ria. Both of whom will transition

to South Middle School this fall. As a dedicated PTO leader, Adriana played a major role in leading teacher appreciation efforts, always ensuring that our staff felt valued, celebrated, and supported. She was also the driving force behind the creation of Web's now annual and spectacular hit talent show, which has become one of our most beloved and well attended community events. Everything Adriana does is done with tremendous heart, energy, and commitment. And her contributions have helped shape the US culture of inclusion, care, support, and excellence. We are incredibly grateful for the countless ways she has supported our student, staff, and families. And we are honored to recognize her tonight with the parent recognition award. Congratulations. [applause] Mr. Eric Roy, can you please join me tonight? [applause] Eric Roy is the kind of person who somehow manages to

fit three lifetimes into a single day. A devoted father, husband, and lieutenant colonel in the army, Eric serves others with humility, dedication, and an incredible sense of purpose. Last year, he spent part of his day flying around the White House in a helicopter and still made it back in time to help Shaper, the seventh grade, dance that evening. And I can confirm he did not arrive by the helicopter because I had no idea this happened until a month ago. Um, and thankfully no fields are also harmed in Texas. So what stands out most about Eric is not his impressive resume, but his character. >> As pack president over the past two years, he has worked tirelessly to support our students, families, and staff at SDMS while always leading with kindness and professionalism. Eric, thank you

for all you have done for our school community. And thank you for your service to our country. It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with you. [applause] Heat. Heat. [applause] >> [applause] >> Now at this time we move to our support staff call. This evening, I'd like to invite Miss Any Patterson down to the front. [applause] And I invited Liz up because just a sidebar, when we hired Ann Marie after the interview, it was one of those moments where when she left the room, we looked at each other and said, "Duh." Ann Marie exemplifies the spirit of the support staff award through her unwavering commitment to supporting all students within the Hammer community. She brought to WPS a deep passion for helping children succeed developed through her early work as a preschool

para educator. From the beginning, Ann Marie demonstrated her quiet strength, consistency, and dedication to ensuring that every student could thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Recognizing both her exceptional skills and her willingness to embrace the challenges, she advanced to the role of behavior specialist where her talents truly flourish. Working in a trauma-informed classroom with students who have significant emotional behavioral needs, Annie combines sophisticated training and behavior analysis and trauma-informed practices with extraordinary compassion and patience to help each student achieve growth and success. She is kind, thoughtful, humble, and endlessly dependable. Always willing to take on any challenge regardless of its complexity. Amber Ann Marie is an integral member of the Hamburg Elementary community and she is truly deserving truly deserve recipient of this staff award. [applause] Our Emerson Williams School community would like to proudly recognize and celebrate Mrs. Claudia Millard for her outstanding contributions and dedication to Emerson Williams. Claudia works as a vital member of our school's topnotch lunch team to which Claudia has emerged as one of the natural leaders of this team. She is incredibly kind, respectful, professional, and hardworking. In addition to being a fantastic lunch period aid, Claudia also helps us out as a substitute administrative assistant in our main office as well as a substitute special education bus monitor in the afternoons. Claudia clearly loves our Emerson Williams School community and she volunteers her time to help run activities at our very special circle of friends program and she

also volunteers to help out at many of our PTO events as well. Claudia wears so many hats at Emerson Williams. I think you had to build like an entire new closet in your house for all those hats. I know all of my principal colleagues have staff members in their schools like Claudia who just wear so many hats and you're just always so flexible and and kind. We are so grateful to everything you do in our school, Claudia, and we are so happy to have you on our team. Thank you so much. [applause] [applause] Trish McDonald, come on down. SDMS is a better place because of Joannne's compassion, dedication, and unwavering support of all our students. Thank you. [applause] I please have Christian

Freeman. [applause] It is a pleasure tonight to recognize Christian for this honor. His work in our wellness center this year has been one of the most meaningful additions to our team. From his very first day, it was clear that he was someone special. He immediately took initiative, finding ways to become an essential part of the space and the work that the wellness center does each day. One of his many contributions was developing a data collection system that helped the wellness center identify patterns, better understand student needs, and strengthen the support the wellness center can provide. As a former student of Weatherskill High School, Christian brings a unique understanding of our community that enriches every interaction he has with students and staff alike. He has a calm and steady presence that helps us create a safe,

welcoming environment where students feel supported and understood. His empathy is evident in the way he listens, encourages, and truly sees each student as his individual. Whether he is helping a student with an academic assignment or guiding them through a social conflict, Christian consistently leads with kindness, patience, and compassion while also maintaining clear and healthy boundaries. For all of these reasons, Christian is an outstanding and truly deserving recipient of our support staff. [applause] Now we move on to our wonderful retirees who donated so I now go on to Matthew. Although admittedly initially nervous about starting high school, he has embraced the transition by participating in numerous orientation activities helping him begin his WHS experience with confidence and he's just soared since. One teacher who made a particularly lasting impress impression was Mr. Jensen, whose ability to connect calculus to concepts to real world application made the subject engaging and meaningful. Paxton noted that it was clear that Mr. Johnson had extensive experience using calculus and describes his explanations as basic amazes me. Good

job, calculus. Known for his curiosity and love of learning, Paxton is the type of student who researches topics thoroughly and seeks to understand them deeply, explaining his connection to calculus. Even in elementary school, there were signs of her accomplishments to come. She has always had a remarkable focus, organization, and determination that would define her academic career. Maddie consistently sought out challenges. I mean, who chooses to self-study both AP biology and AP citizens? Her motivation and drive had always been inspiring. More recently, when faced with a difficult decision of choosing a college, she approached the process with the same thoughtfulness and maturity that she has shown throughout her high school career. One final visit to Duke University where she spent time on campus meeting with the professors helped make her decision. One I am sure

she thought out the pros and cons of changing her original college choice very carefully, thoughtfully, and I'm sure we will miss. Reflecting on her time at Weathersfield High School, Maddie has challenged herself by taking the most rigorous courses available, collaborated with classmen through a variety of clubs, and found a second family on the swim team.
