001okay good evening welcome to the July 17th Board of Education meeting since six o'clock the board has been in closed session to consider the discussion of minutes of meetings uh lawfully closed under the open meetings act for purpose of approval by the body of the minutes or semi-annual review of the minutes as mandated by section 2.06 the employment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of specific employees of the district or legal counsel for the district litigation when an action against affecting or on behalf of the particular district has been filed and is pending before court or administrative tribunal and Collective negotiating matters between the public body and its employees or their representatives I will entertain a motion to come out of closed session so moved second Motion in a second have been heard please call

002the roll Fitzgerald aye wankey I Kelly black aye cosminski MacMillan aye gurkey I Kush hi we are in Open Session welcome to the July 17th Board of Education meeting where our mission is to educate students to be self-directed Learners collaborative workers complex thinkers quality producers and Community contributors please call the role Mrs Patton board members present this evening Christine Gerke Kristen Fitzgerald Charles cush Melissa Kelly black Amanda McMillan and Donna wenke excellent job and Joe cosminsky via phone the Pledge of Allegiance of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay we've reached the point in the meeting for good news Okay um happy to share a little recent news about an April Central High School graduate Darby Hilo a 2023 Naperville Central

003graduate recently had a bill she drafted signed by governor pritzker the bill ensures that allergen safety instructions include instruction on recognizing signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction steps to take to prevent exposure to allergens and safe emergency Administration Darby came up with this bill after working on a project addressing allergies in school in peace and conflict studies saw a need that will probably end up saving lives worked on a draft Bill and then approached representative Yang war with the idea so great work and a leadership shown by our April Central graduate okay we've reached the point in our agenda for public comment the Board of Education welcomes comments from the public at its meetings citizens who wish to address the Board of Education should identify themselves by name comments by individuals shall be limited

004to three minutes if the individual is representing multiple individuals or a group they shall be allowed to speak for five minutes in accordance with board policy issues raised in public comment will be taken under advisement by the Board of Education will but will not be discussed this evening issues raised during public participation may be added to Future agenda future agendas or addressed by administrative staff because the questions raised in public comment address District operational matters the superintendent is a board's designee to coordinate response to the public and will apprise the board accordingly I do we have any slips Mrs Benton no okay I do not have any uh public comment requests does anybody in the audience wish to address the board all right uh this will conclude our public comment period tonight okay loaded um

005in section six monthly reports are monthly reports does the board have any questions regarding those okay we uh moving on to action by consent prior to asking for a motion um I'd like to request that the board remove uh item a 7.05 from the consent agenda and hold any conversation or action for the next Board of Education meeting I'll make some additional comments after the consent agenda but if that's okay with the board and that's what we hold on that topic can I ask for a item on the consent action my consent agenda to be also held for the board meeting minutes for 6 20 2023 this year um so we have to remove those because we have one board member who's not going to be present so that will have its own motion because

006our board member Charles Kush was not present so there will be our own met it will have its own motion for the open meeting and the close board meeting minutes for 6 20. okay because he has to abstain okay okay so I will entertain a motion how about if I just wanted to okay I'll do the motion because I was the bills and claims so I want to thank Michelle Swope for her efforts on behalf of the business office and Mike as well um to be able to answer all the questions from the bills and claims this month um and with that I will move approval of Warrant number 1052456 through warrant number nine zero zero zero wait I'm gonna have to count these zeros let me start over nine zero zero zero zero zero

007zero zero four one totaling 25 million eight hundred and eighty four thousand and 19.53 for the period of June 21 to July 17 2023. and item 702 the Personnel report board meeting minutes from 626 2023 and item 7.06 the Luda annual dues is there a second second okay a motion a second have been heard please call the roll Mrs Patton Kelly black aye wonky aye gurkey I Kush aye McMillan aye kozminski Fitzgerald aye the motion passes okay okay so now I'll move approval of the 6 20 23 board meeting minutes take a second and then have discussion yeah okay okay emotion and a second have been hurt no I haven't been heard yep now any discussions is there any discussion I guess I was just asking there was I did have some concern about it

008so my question is is it possible for me to request a written transcript of it and for us to be put this back on the agenda for consent next week after I can verify some information off the transcript so you want you're asking for a written transcript of the entire meeting or that's the section um where it specifically referred to some statements or comments that I made um as far as the click agreement goes well take direction from the from the board that's going to test staff that's going to pretty pretty large burden on staff in order to to produce those there is a Verbatim recording of the meeting uh it's the video and audio recording that's posted uh with the agenda uh on on the website so I'll just have a full written transcript

009of it doesn't need to be the full written transcript and I I can go over and do the transcript myself I guess I was looking for a neutral party to like transcribe just that section it if it's that extensive um then what I'm also willing you know we could also just see what's available put it up for the next board meeting and see what options we have available to make this cost effective and work for everyone mm-hmm it says go ahead I have a question are you asking that we post that or no no what's happened is that there are comments that refer to comments that I made and they're working significant issues that I concerns about that I thought and had hoped would be included in the minutes they were not so to address

010that I felt like it did not encapsulate what I said it was a review of what I said so my thought is to go back and actually do verbatim and see if those statements or those ideas could be encapsulated in the minute so they're reflective of my position and my vote at that time I'll just remind the board that minutes are not verbatim recordings of the minutes itself the written minutes are not verbatim recordings of the meetings they represent a summary the verbatim recording the verbatim record of it is the video and audio that is recorded and posted on our website I understand but I would like the minutes to reflect the interpretation is not how I viewed it to be and not what I wanted to get up across and I actually would like

011my name assigned to my concern so that it was public what my concerns were and how they were addressed I get well the one thing I'm my mind is going to is that when we post on the website the the date of the meeting is listed next to it is the mean the minutes of that meeting and then directly next to that is the link to that meetings video so if there there would there's a direct path essentially to hearing exactly how you said it where the meetings or I'm sorry the meeting minutes are more of a a I want to say like a snapshot to kind of give a reference that in this meeting this is what we discussed about and I know when I've gone back to look for some sort of information

012I'm like oh that's right we discussed it at this such and such meeting here's the video I want instead of just aimlessly trying to find the correct video so your your remarks every anyone who wishes to view it would see it exactly how you said it also and see it in the context of the entire discussion I know add to that really quickly please just let's finish the other part of the question that was asked or the comment the request that was made um identify or identifying individual board members of questioning would be a change in practice from previous direction that the board of education has provided uh staff about meetings so I think that would entail a board conversation well yeah I I understand and I'm sorry I did not know that background so

013thank you for sharing that with me so because of that I'm asking that maybe this would be a good thing to take it off for right now have you know if there needs to be a conversation of how to best address this then maybe that would be the way to do it or I could also just maybe it's possible for me to make a statement of what those points were so that they're included I thought my questions were relevant to the conversation they weren't included so I'm asking that maybe this isn't the right form I'm asking for time and opportunity to address this and understand all the procedurals and then readdress it at the next board meeting board what does the board have any thoughts on how we address the minutes Kristen I I would

014just say I think that we want to keep from having the minutes become a detailed accounting of each thing for example with public comment we've often had many public comment speakers and we don't share all of their public comments we just kind of summarize individual points that have been made same with our discussions we really do try to just kind of give a summary of the substance I know the effort that there were some changes made to the minutes to address some of the questions that you had noted so they aren't the original version there is some attempt to look at those changes however I think one of the things about approving the minutes is just ensuring that for the public we have them on the website so that they're able to take a look

015and see a summary of the meeting in the event that they aren't able to watch the whole entire time period but we also make available for every board meeting all of the public meeting so that your questions are eternalized always every however you drafted that however you've said them so that's always available to the public okay that's good to know so because I thought that the that there was a time limit and how long these videos are kept that they're in a permanent record that could go back and be correct referred to and then just for my information also if situations if say from my perspective there were important points or questions asked that were not reflected in the meeting how is this typically what's the best procedure and how is this dealt with I

016think when we have a question about how like for example there was a a question in the budget hearing portion of the minutes where the question wasn't entirely finished and so we just note I think the end of the question was would we amend would we amend the budget if we had additional Revenue would we need to have been the budget so like just making sure that it's accurately stated um and so that suggests would be sent so similarly as you sent your concerns you wanted to ensure that you had those these particular points that was made that change was made to the minute so they are amended I those weren't what I asked to it was not amended with what I requested okay so that is also the issue so I'm having somewhat of

017a concern about it being a reflection because I don't know if everyone remembers it was quite an extensive dialogue about the click I don't want to reopen it but my hope would be that those concerns are out there because I did also want those concerns to be addressed or discussed at a future time that they are still relevant it wasn't just a one-time concern and we have we do have that noted that there were concerns that we will follow up on and keep on on our radar essentially but the the the recording the video recording won't go away it will always be available for anyone to reference us you the public no I know I just felt like the written notes are not characteristic in a reflection of what my statements were that is my

018concern so if I feel the written notes do not reflect what I said how is that dealt with you have an opportunity to vote no so they there's yes no or abstain so they're you just I think the important the the minutes are a summary it's we've in my time on the board I can say it's never been a Verbatim document it's it's really the way I see it the way I use it is it's that that piece of information where I can say this is the meeting where such and such was discussed even from I've done it for myself like I wanted to go back and see how to hear my piece of the conversation again like was my point clear for example or did I not say it the way I thought I

019said it so I just use it and say oh we talked about it at that meeting it just it it's a stepping stone to me getting to the actual recording because I feel that the recording will never be replaced by anything that we would assign I mean no no I understand that it's just I feel it's a misrepresentation was my point and so I was seeking some type of written correction so it wouldn't be in the written notes because that could also be you know people do access each either Source they're not going to necessarily sit through the video they're written are the brief ones so I guess my concern is it's not I don't feel it's a reflection of of accurately what I said that is an important document so the way this process

020works uh it is brought to the Board of Education with the recommendation for approval or education members typically through the consent agenda have an opportunity to either vote Yes or No as a reflection of a summary of the meeting you have that opportunity here if the majority of the board if the if the recommendation fails then Administration by that failure will be directed to rewrite it otherwise the approval of the minutes by a majority of the Board of Education indicates that it accepts them as a summary of the meeting so the the action that you have an opportunity to make is to vote no for the minutes as does Every Other Board member okay so just to clarify so no one's ever gone back and asked this so you've never changed minutes that have came

021out in the agenda no I mean if we've we've made Corrections you know typos mechanical errors finishing a sentence yeah right okay a cut and paste that didn't paste properly okay Kristen but again they are just a summary like they're it and they are Never As Long like we have had many discussions which have been very very lengthy and they would never they would never they can't accomplish no I I get it there's a difference between encompassing and not including or misrepresenting because I this is that's why we do that that is a reflection on us that I do take that very seriously if something is indicated I said it I want it to reflect My Views but I understand now um okay so then take a motion on 7.03 the minutes for 6 20.

02223. so moved up second okay sorry emotion in a second have been heard please call the roll Mrs Patton Fitzgerald aye Kelly black nay wonky aye gurkey I MacMillan aye kazminsky Kush hi nope you have to abstain oh is that the 20 oh yeah sorry abstain that's right I wasn't here thank you and then I will also make a motion for the closed board meeting minutes for 6 20. Motion in a second have been heard please call the roll Mrs Patton Kush Epstein Kelly black aye Fitzgerald aye wanke aye husband ski McMillan aye gurkey aye the motion passes okay uh Section 8 Communications we have to go back to 7.05 just want a couple oh sorry a couple comments just for the board no no worries um so I think we will need a motion

023to to table this for a future agenda um but uh in summary a couple questions came in regarding the recommendation for uh Master agreement uh Master service agreement regarding architectural services uh that type of agreement represents and provides the general terms and conditions for the Professional Services of the architect um the current Master agreement that we have has not been updated uh since I think it was 2008 and it was based off of Industry standard [Music] um document by the American Institute of Architects that was last completed or updated in 1992 so we're a little out of date it needs to be updated um and so uh based on some of the questions uh provided some additional information at board docs so to ensure that you all have an opportunity to read the entire document

024and information that was posted uh request that we just delay the action until the next Board of Education meeting and then any questions you have as a result of that sentence to me and we can respond to those on August 7th so I'll move to um table table this item 7.05 the master architect agreement second Motion in a second have been heard please call the roll Fitzgerald I kazminski gurkey I Kelly black aye cush hi MacMillan aye one key aye the motion passes okay section 8.01 written Communications have been loaded for review and section 8.02 the superintendent staff school report no report school's cutting close to the start of school all right uh the president's report I have two things to uh to mention um the first thing is uh if you have any final

025thoughts on our uh exit slips for our meetings we'll start those uh hopefully around the same time the school year starts if you have any other comments about what you like disliked with some of the samples I gave you just give them to me and then I'll work on putting together something that hopefully reflects everything that we've mentioned the second thing is um we talked about it at the last meeting is the Casbah conferences and in my time on the board we generally have not had a practice of attending out-of-state conferences we usually only attend the one in November in Chicago with iasb so with Cosmo being new and they have three different opportunities for us this year they have one in Chicago in August one in DC in September and then they have one

026in Dallas in February so I'm interested to hear what the board feels as far as how we should approach these conferences because we just don't have practice to kind of rely on do and especially with Cosmo being a new group do we want to send one or two board members to kind of get delay of is this the right learning opportunity how do we maximize our advocacy representation Etc I I'm just going to open it up what are your thoughts on how we want to attend if I could just for a moment just in terms of history there have been board members who have attended the National School Board Association conference in the past um the UR correct there has been no formal process on that it's simply just been by a a request or

027a hey I'm going to be there anyways those types of things so um yeah the August one is local and it's a day and a half it's a half day Thursday all day Friday but then DC is at the end of September and February is in Dallas um long yeah they're like long weekend three days um events so um yeah just curious you know if the board wishes to to explore going to these and how many Charles yeah I like the idea of exploration and if some of my fellow board members would love to kind of pilot it so to speak and then kind of report back to the rest of us what you learn is it is it something of value sounds like um there's been some historical precedent for board members attending on

028these conferences in the past unfortunately not really privy to what those experiences were like so I would love to to understand that before kind of launching into something that we are doing on a more formal basis okay any Donna I would say for the local I'm fine because there's not as much cost I'm totally fine with any or all of us going um I think for the ones that are going to cost us have a higher expense involved I would say um rotating representation would be nice uh since you made that comment about cost I will say that there is money allocated in the budget for Board of Education professional learning so but probably not enough for all of us to go definitely not well no it sounds like I know that you do other

029um meetings with other groups is that true like I know we have the Illinois State Board of Education or you mentioned others is there maybe an understanding of I know you're saying this is a new group so you don't understand but how much of the budget do we have and how much is taken up by those experiences and how much is left that we have to work with so we have the joint conference in November then we have two division meetings with so the iasbr division the DuPage division we have one in the fall one in the spring those are the biggest I would say opportunities that we take part in that have an expense attached to it but we could look at what our budget is and but I think all of us go

030to all of those or can go to all of those just so you know those three yeah those are we almost all we almost all all go okay yeah no I know you guys have been great on telling me about that and the participation so with the budget we might know how much room we have to play with and then we could look at the situations and the options of how to proceed with this yeah we could look at the budget and then see what it allows us I think we've always stayed under budget because we I'd like to recommend that I uh you direct me to put together a process for which you're considering which it would lead to how board members would Express their interest decision making process feedback process um because as

031Mr Kush mentioned those who have attended there typically isn't a formal way to report back which we do that after triple I but I can put some parameters in place around this for the board to consider as a starting point is the board comfortable with that I think that's a great idea the only thing I would note is that the um August conference the early bird registration ends today and so then it goes up in price so like I I think that we did hear kind of a distinction between like the local conferences and the Nationals so perhaps yours would be for national conferences and then for the local one anybody who would want to go to that local one we should probably tell them today so that we get the better rate yeah good

032okay good so you'll develop some parameters guidelines for long distance and can you get that back to us like I don't know next meeting in August is that fair maybe the second second okay that's fine um well hold on the September the September one hit okay Chicago no September is in DC August but um I have a memory that Cosmos conference in DC has a really limited number of attendees only 185 and they're recommending that people register right away if they want us I'll look into it then okay September 24th 25th yes they're like a month apart okay in the interim and just terms of thinking of the Readiness for the start of the school year uh and work to get completed uh in I guess in the interim then I would ask if I

033I I've heard from one board member interested in this conference I don't know if there are others if you want to just have something in interim in place and or say not more than I'm not sure but um we're not getting anybody registered today recommend for this look at our current budget and what we can afford out of the the three and then put in a process put forward moving forward so that way we don't miss that I think it's more about the money at this point right yeah sorry Charles the other thing to me is availability so yeah just speaking for myself something like August probably can't go I know it's local and everything but at this point my schedule probably wouldn't allow that um September is a different story but I do think

034that maybe we start with raise hand interest and I would be perfectly fine with this year just as we're trying to understand this a little bit if one or two folks want it to go and there's room in the budget then we could do that but it should probably start with if there's a particular interest in going uh and then also Dan could then provide an idea of like what's the outline look back and turn look like in terms of whoever decides to go to then report back and say hey this is something we should do on an ongoing basis or you know what it was great but probably not worth a lot of folks time maybe we should keep an eye on it or just whatever the recommendation coming back is because um I

035would want before committing to going to something just from my time and in the district resources I'd want to understand a little bit more have a little reconnaissance done around what it's what it's like and if it's worth um the time so do we need to have though for today who wants to go to the local since it's the last day to decide this is the deadline for early bird registration yeah it's still open after today they had two different they have two most of them have two different deadlines like that oh do we want to is it do we know who's going to go who's decided at this point registration will not be able to be completed today and then do we also just know in general like how many people are even interested

036or available to go to the other that's why I'm suggesting I put together a process so that we can get better yeah we'll have Dan that'll be part of the process of how do we line that up and then um in the meantime if you're interested in sea or Dallas just let me know so that I just have kind of a in the back of my head as we start going through it that's all I have um any Board of Education reports Amanda um I am excited to be working with um the female leadership of this board to re bring back the Mary Lou um kalasha women's leadership dinner so uh Mary Lou was a part of the board back um in 1972 to 1983 and then she was part of the state legislator for

03720 years and um until 2003 and in 2009 she decided that it'd be really good to bring um local elected women together to um throughout the Naperville area to come together to collaborate to learn about what each person does and to support each other and this went on for a long time until about 2013 I think and um or I kept going and then it took a break for the pandemic I'm mumbling over my words I'm sorry but um we're looking now to reignite this including members from District 204 city council um County boards Etc Township levels and so we're looking to have this on August 14th and we'll be sending out an invitation to those local leaders and excited to be a part of that process so thanks for taking on the planning on

038that one Amanda I'm excited for it to come back it's a really good event and I hope we can all attend thank you Amanda any other board reports okay item nine discussion without action 9.01 policy 2.40 board member qualifications um yeah the title of that policy is a little misleading in terms of the context of what we're recommending for change however we are going to make a recommendation to the board in regard to our student ambassadors a focus on student voice and belonging have always been a priority for this board but it's become a greater priority especially in recent years and we believe this recommendation is a powerful response to that some of the reasons for this update are to honor the diversity of the student body and student experience and to demonstrate alignment to

039pertaining to our focus of inclusive School communities we'd like to increase opportunities to get more input and to learn from students with different experiences within our district There's an opportunity to amplify more student voices not only to amplify voices but to include more voices and to extent we extend leadership opportunities to even more students still finalizing exactly what this might look like but proposed changes would include a new student ambassador every two to three months from each High School assigned to serve for two to three months uh ambassadors would introduce themselves share a little bit about their interests and area of Engagement in the district before the current happenings so really focusing the reports on experience they continue to meet and plan with their principals in preparation for each meeting there also could be a

040good opportunity for overlap with the superintendent student advisory Council which will continue which was a new initiative last year which will continue next year so the recommendations for change are simply to change it to the board will annually appoint student members not designating specifically the quantity to serve in an advisory capacity again it emphasizes no voting privileges that's not allowed by code Dr Holland anything that you should like to add to that background and then we'll take board conversation the only thing that I would add is right now part of the planning is that for the two high schools there would be three ambassadors per high school they would actually meet year-round as a group and be involved in the principal's meetings with other student groups so part of the vision is to gather as

041many perspectives as possible but like if you think about the pictures outside of this room you would have the three ambassadors from North the three ambassadors from Central um they would engage together they would engage separately and just thinking about schedules and participation sometimes our ambassadors are not able to come to the board meetings for a variety of reasons because there'll be me they will be meeting together every time and preparing for the board report collectively although one person will come at any time if someone's unable to come one of the other ambassadors will show up and have the shared report that they all worked on together questions from the board oh thank you for putting that together Amanda um so how are the um the three student ambassadors from each School selected I'm curious

042about that so we've been diligently following up on the record bless you the recommendations from this superintendent student advisory Council one of the great things that we're excited about launching at the high school level is a principal's advisory Council to also focus on student belonging as was one of the recommendations having student voice there are also several other groups that are forming based on that recommendation but one of the thoughts right now is that there will be a direct connection with at least one of the members onto the superintendent student advisory Council some of our high schools are also well both of our high schools are piloting some student work to really focus on advocating against hate and really just thinking about if you think about the recommendations that came out from the advisory committee

043students want to lead other students in learning about different cultures so different cultures and engaging in anti-bullying really being a voice to protect the interests and the humanity of all students that both high schools will be piloting a group that also focuses on that there's also a group at both at the high school that focuses on diversity equity and inclusion so right now we're thinking about some of our more diverse groups and having students pull from there but some of it will be through conversations with the principal so we're still figuring it out but I'm just sharing some of the ideas we have just to think about students who are having a variety of experiences that are also involved in many different ways across the building while also tapping into some students who may not

044be involved to give them also a leadership opportunity so we've been having a wide range of conversations about really how to draw in students who you may not hear from or see ever and give them this leadership opportunity as well mm-hmm Donna thank you for looking at this critically and thinking outside the box a little bit um I love the idea I'll start with that I think the one my one concern is that sometimes um the student ambassadors take a while to get comfortable um expressing what you know their thoughts within within our our board meeting they you know obviously they always share their what's happening reports but I've noticed that not until later into the year um if there's a topic that happens to come up that directly affects them then they feel comfortable

045to maybe interject or unless we ask them which I hate sometimes like putting them on the spot but sometimes when we ask them to provide some feedback on a specific topic they do that so I would say um that's my only concern is that they're not going to necess with with the rotating they're not going to feel comfortable so I would incur like I love that they're all meeting together with the principal I guess it would be great if they did a quick look at the board agenda to see if there's a topic that they feel is important to them so that we can allow for that feedback within the board meeting not just within the board meeting on the board topics not just their report so that's not going to happen all the time

046like I'm sure they don't necessarily uh you know it's a good recommendation to be considered for sure yeah thank you Charles hi uh I too like the idea of getting more student voices involved I really appreciated the opportunity we had when we were at was at Washington Junior High not that long ago where the um advisory Council had the chance to do the report out and multiple students were involved in being able to share a piece of that so I thought that was a great um a great thing so I I love the idea of extending the spirit of that type of report out on an ongoing basis uh two questions well I just wanted to follow up on Amanda's question um I I got I think she asked how the students would be selected

047I got where this what pool the students might come from but the process of picking Rich students within those pools is that going to be from their peers one of the things I like about the student ambassadors for sure I know at least the one at North is is elected by um their peers I don't know if exactly the same process happens at Central but I know that's the process that happens in North because my own daughter went through that um or is that more it's more going to be more selected by student Supply and then Administration picks or what's the thinking on that so we're still figuring that out one of the things that has come up is we don't want it to be a popularity contest and um not that it always will

048be that but we we are looking at Juniors and seniors and um we recognize again that some students are not are are not known as well by their peers so um we're still trying to figure out how to how to encourage and Foster more leadership while also I hear what you're saying as well having an opportunity for for peers to be involved and possibly choosing um so I'm sharing I mean there's pros to that but there's also some limitations but we can definitely come back to this group of course because it's they're your ambassadors are they're representing the district and share where we land and maybe share a couple uh um a couple of options with you to consider and just a quick follow-up to that so thank you for that that's that would be

049very helpful and then um does this have to be an either or is there an opportunity for us to inject more um do we have to change the entire process in order to do that because I know that there's an intention for the uh superintendent advisory Council to meet a little bit more frequently um I think it'd be great to get some periodic report outs as they talk about different things again I love the experience we had at Washington where we had a group of students going out so you know I would love to consider carving out chime on the agenda periodically throughout the year to get those report outs from those groups as they come up with new thoughts and ideas to provide updates on the from the student advisory Council you were saying

050also with those reports I think that part of the discussion could also be like they make their what they're talking about they make their suggestions but also there's that follow-up of what happened to the suggestion so we have that going on of like what was the result so it's not just you get to voice your opinion this is the outcome okay Kristen um I appreciate hearing a little bit more about what you're thinking in terms of how the students would work together on the reports I think that really helps with continuity because I also had the concern about the students being there only such a short period of time that they might not you know understand you know what had been said before Etc so I think it's really positive to have them work together

051I also think it's positive to have several um you know that's that that spreads it around and potentially you know Charles questions about having the students choose maybe they choose one and or something like that I do wonder I think Naperville North already had elections last year to name for this year how will I guess will that be part of when you come back to us with details how how that will work out for that individual that was already elected so I have been meeting with the principals and that was not named okay but I will follow up to find out okay I do also want to share because this connects with um with Donna mentioned the principals did talk extensively about um like group think um like a concept of them getting together then

052becoming more comfortable meeting with as a group but also with other um with other groups and so um we definitely did talk about the comfort and sharing and we're hoping that because they'll have other people cheering them on and also meeting with them regularly that there's discussions would actually be deeper they'll be meeting with the principals as a group regularly and they'll also be meeting with other members of the student body that hopefully they develop their voice over time but that is something I just wanted to like recognize that it's something that came up like Comfort not every student may be comfortable um but are we willing to give them an opportunity to try so I think that that was really um important in terms of making sure that there is more because I think

053when we have them working together it does give the board continuity over the year that there actually is a voice even if it's voiced by various people but there's a continuous voice throughout um the only other thing that I would maybe suggest besides just working together on the um I thought the looking at the agenda I had is a great idea but um I would also suggest you know just watching the board report from the previous meetings just ensuring that because then they can kind of see how it went what what whether there were questions asked how there are other board members how it how it appeared which wouldn't be how it feels but would give a little bit more information so that that was something that occurred to me as well another um another

054thing that you said um making sure it's not a popularity contest thank you for that I think there's so many kids who want to participate but they're just the personality they they need to be invited and they have a lot of really good things to share and to to teach us too so I appreciate that effort to get kids who sometimes just would prefer not to raise their hand but they're they got so much in there um I do like the agenda looking ahead I really like that Donna um to get their comfort level if they're comfortable talking about a topic go for it um so I I appreciate too that um that that advisory council is going to continue um and that they are going to work with different people I I see a

055another opportunity for them to connect with different adults in the building so I appreciate the work that you're that you're doing on this one do we know um would they not start don't they usually start with us in August or would they just have a later starting date this year September 18th Okay so still have them join us around the usual time okay Melissa this is gonna be my first but I'm just going to Second what you just said I thought that you highlighted the the fact of I appreciate that it's students that the voice isn't just those that are the loudest they're the most popular that it is the voice of everyone and you specifically highlighted you know giving that opportunity and helping our students grow that that maybe don't stand out and know

056it so again I just second Christine other questions from the board okay so we look forward to seeing what uh what the new year is going to bring us with our students um okay item 10.01 consideration of Board of Education expenses Board of Education policy in Illinois state law requires that all board member expenses for travel meals and or lodging be approved by a roll call vote at an open meeting of the Board of Education several expenses in there are posted however I'm going to recommend that you approve it as amended we have learned from iasb that the 300 board self-evaluation can be forgotten all right any questions from the board okay so I will take a motion to approve item 10.01 as amended without the self-evaluation invoice so moved second question in a second

057have been heard please call roll Mrs Patton Juan key aye McMillan aye Fitzgerald aye kosminsky all right gurkey I Kush aye Kelly black aye the motion passes item 10.02 policy 6.32 class size as the date would suggest this policy was ready for board action at the May 15th Board of Education meeting and it was requested to be held until a board member could be in attendance for the vote or discussion uh so we have held it there have been no changes since that May 15 meeting the policy as recommended based on a lot of conversation and board input as posted in board docs we'd recommend you approve 632 class size as presented it has been reviewed by Council and no new concerns echo or reported by Council any questions from the board Donna so um
