Jeremy Olson celery in Hernandez here give it to your crew I've never had an open army with a statement and we would like to honor today as Juneteenth the day when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the last people that were enslaved in the Confederacy whether that being said we also realized slavery was not formally abolished in all the United States until the following December when the 13th amendment was ratified we acknowledge at the very amendment that declared black people and other display people's free also provided a loophole for the government to continue to enslave anybody they convicted of a crime especially black and brown people we recognize that more than 150 years after the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment even today as we join you in honoring Juneteenth as a celebration of freedom

we are still working to disassemble systems of racism and oppression and we are here today to listen to your experiences and suggestions with the hope of moving our as in the Community School District towards becoming an anti-racist organization where students are reporting equable opportunities to succeed with that I just want to go over quickly how the meeting will function first bubble here from all of our speakers who are here physically in attendance and then we will move to the speakers that are joining us online on go to native speakers will be asked to complete the comment card at the start of the meeting that are physically here comments will be limited to five minutes each and criticisms of individuals is not an order as are later we do not support policy uniform grievance procedure so

you can file a formal complaint that will be investigated and that's outlined in our school for policy and also the email that went out to everyone all families so with that let's go ahead and get started with our first speaker welcome Oh our moving parts of this I do feel like that a lot of these things are going on I feel like the first step is to make that I committed I feel like a lot of that is that making changes within education Oh within the district I feel like some changes that have to be made is that there has to be more diversity in the district and I'm just the first to have to like morning leadership roles especially my experience I was born and raised in Chicago I have been in the district

K through 12 and then I believe that I feel I see no diversity no people of color and leadership roles I just want to rewrite that I feel like a lot of the miners I feel like are at small rules like teacher assistants food misses its coaches to the point where I feel my experiencing black teachers was a rare thing not the way diet needs to change Oh another thing I feel like is a change in the curriculum driving black culture oh my experience anyhow I feel like when we talk about black culture after like we learned about slavery Rosa Parks and I'm okay that was it and I feel like that's that's not that's a disservice they ever you person in the community you know we never talk about people are happy we'll never

fun know people like w visa would never qualify the Black Power movement we tried away from things like that and I did research not look up that it's Illinois School Code requires that every public elementary and high school shall include in his Korean government unit of instruction studying of events in black history in the high school offers a high school I remember at any time talking like like is reflex buddy than any of my and any more questions another thing I feel like that this services we talk about the youth after life especially in elementary school and a lot of oscillator things like that nature I feel like that's inventing for all I feel like we talked about like history of slavery group playing beats computer ideas all of our youth if I feel like

and I can remember many times I'll make you snore felt like I wanted to on every set and there was someone a it's crazy how like used to older people you know that's period IX your history and that's not history because like this is not sponsored nor did any another thing I believe is that within a meeting more enriched clubs and cruise focus and inform empowering people of color in Pacific on your life don't black implanted black women and I was going to look especially living in predominately white town I think it's very important that we have these groups so this is viable for life their growth as a person to be able to talk about how about of the discuss their experienced accessory like even expressed their perspectives growing up in this town and

they should not like they're alone run give it away comedian might not like I was one but I did not have my parents discussing these things with me I feel like there's been I would have felt very very isolated things that nature you can say that word many people really inclusive but if you're in the element if you're in the class there's two black kids in that school like there's no way I'm not gonna throw your disc looted from that you can say what you want but that's how it is look there everybody else does not class you're going to feel excluded and you said Sam will treat them the same as if I want you in the same this is about equity not equality that's all that house is that maybe thank you Chris

thank you I think first there needs to be some sort of district policy regarding races hopefully when you were younger in elementary school we knew if we should go in class even here in consequence I think if there is some policy regarding if you are pieces you get some kind of consequence learning young that racism is wrong even if you grow up in a traces household you will be able to change your the way you think future in the future okay in middle school chewing gum spinning saying interpreting swearing you always get some sort of excellence but if you're racist it was just fresh crush your way and I also think every teacher or authority for earth needs to be tested for racial bias I also think they need equal to stand up for injustice

and educate everyone on systemic racism and white privilege the next thing I think that needs to be more cultural classes I I don't know how any Hispanic leaders know Asian here it's nothing you've never taught that they need to be more classes about different cultures so people have more informed the mortgage and heated and are aware about other cultures besides just learning the white man's history book and Black History Month I feel like it means the more celebratory more informative more educational there needs to be more of a curriculum than just one month we hear lacquered life all the time now after just went on I think that we are only learned that while you are entertainers athletes former slaves and that's just that's not that's not black history there's so much harm and lastly

I think we shouldn't be in a comfortable subject people of color shouldn't feel ashamed for wearing curly hair school wearing braids wearing some never hear that like people I think kids should not be taught that discrimination is okay and you wouldn't understand they knew if they accept everyone no matter if you want I don't think black people should be uncomfortable and I thought they're the only black person in the room I don't think they should feel nervous and scared because there's no one that looks like that and the everyone needs to feel comfortable and everyone and another big thing is that everyone should feel the need to automatically look at black students when speaking about slavery I've heard that a lot lastly I don't think the goal should be I don't see color I don't

see race I think the goal should be I see color I understand it and I understand our differences because all of unique and beautiful it really should feel overall I think the education system and how it's really biased and we get about a week or so a black history taught in our history classes junior year whereas they do require a class to the life history class or any kind of multicultural history things like that personally I was not talking about the march on Washington Freedom Riders weapons will scheme your year though I did don't really work I was not talk about them in the class until my senior year in the Civil Rights which is class that I really should be required for every junior or senior really lower or even like other classmates and

even on our elementary to middle school that there should be a comeback history solely a black history section a class or just a semester where its own flag history so overall I just think that the black poisons in our school system are silenced we have zero black teachers at Cal high school the only black officials we have there are security guards or coaches or so there's like no stigma put towards them it can only be protecting in there but they're not educational leaders they're simply there to protect us or to scare other people and Michael Albert my name is Jeff bland I'm coming not only as a parent educator I've been in the capital a while actually and some of the things that I have seen over time is representation I know everyone else talked

about that however I think that also when we do representation make sure that they have experienced the notation and addition to have the ability to make changes sometimes we have either going to eat them out there so that they can't actually make diligent changes I suppose a little more about the NTFS structure and I'm looking at the data and now switch it to an educator and I'm looking at the data and you see the SAT score and you see the state summative assessment I are before with that being said there's a huge just personality and again we've had several years people in the office in nothing has been done or we keep saying that they've been trying to do stuff it's been over four years and every window structures to actually work with those pieces

in addition to it feels like as a mother that over time the students are there especially the black students are only paying attention to if they are in athletics in addition to the fact that dr. Tatum is serving longtime literacy honors and one of things that he said with the fact that you have black students that are completely being neglected he said if they are not misbehaving in class he said they're being left out whether it be that they need extra health or if they need to be pushed into AP courses honest courses or whatever else my students on this year of the cedar he was the only black male in the National Honor Society how they all began with I was the one who created this fellow for AP classes not a single counseling

near Trenton where a teacher ever recommended because I have experience I'm the one who put them in those a teacher I have a long list of other things to talk about as well but I just wanted to show up to the age when I really would like to do is talk about Silesia and gave some folders I think that one of the first things is pushing the youth and a lot of volunteer efforts one of those kind of numbers now Jake Larson football basketball team a little more community in the apartment community and so I definitely want to start getting more call that helped me become the weight we cannot attend a lot of the peaceful protest as well as the town hall meeting the hill left and I not thinking more about I wasn't

even aware that you have to do this and that's channel me so it's a more in line but it's at this more groups are getting more people involved because a lot of people have complaints but they either they don't give up so they feel like their voice can be heard so the more can get more people involved in being part of the grassroots efforts and we can work together on these coalition's so we can have a peaceful decal so we can have their fun working together unison so I would like to be involved with all this does crossing to even know volunteer mount Kenna efforts are so our CD more information I do that because today I'm here with a friend of mine says she's an amazing person I post there kids I mean she's

know working hands-on with her and she's my shooting Northwest she's at bargain hunters go so I want to [Music] cheers and yes we have issues yes recently race yes we had bullies and I'm here to work with the community school district to help change that and my point of being here today is set up a resolutions we need more supporters substitute teachers teachers I'm a substitute teacher who lives on a hundred of the day's salary I did not receive any benefits I did not receive any also about subsidy it's girl maybe check the check it's the economy every day my annual sub subsidy and you come for taxes is 20,000 a year it's not enough to live life as opposed to teacher you are looked at as a teacher as well a lot of responsibilities

your situation and so once again I'm here to work as a community member as well to change that anybody is possible [Music] so basically what I wanted to think I graduated I don't really have any complaints about the school or the teachers I've never personally experiencing me like injustice or unfairness I actually enjoyed my I feel is that the staff and it's very helpful couple of teachers in particular check out their personal time in order to help me because I want to do like an emancipation process and every day I was out of school for some 1/2 months my graduate on time work as we the wait and they're very supportive and without being said I know talking what I did one of what I mention though is the the curriculum side of things I

feel like we we wasn't giving the opportunities or more about like black history stuff like that I'm 20 years old 21 in October and as of maybe two days ago I didn't even know what a teen teen was and I felt very like bad cuz I'm and everything and really involved with that maintaining the John Hampton school so with that I kind of fell and I didn't really voice it to anybody but I kind of felt hypocritical because I wouldn't give an opportunity to actually know what what that is so I feel like we just need to look like as a district just implement more more you know more black history internet and as far as like you know the sports and you know extracurricular activities I feel like the district has really been on

that it's it really changed my life I know for a fact that like the Calphalon general this needs a little bit more attention as far as the coaching staff because as I graduated the class before me because and my class were like the like the riveted clients and that's what we were so under Network earth and just a whole oceans that really made differences in so many of our lives and Michael Newman a particular time home Williams a particular time on green life literally they gave their players something that I wasn't receivable so like is the attention act just the relations life I went through different days with my parents not really didn't have you know this what I needed for my parents and coaching a mandated personal experiences and stuff like that so it

really gave me hope and tried in order to do what I do so and I really took the experiences that I've learned from being a decal school of history I come from together so our school district was totally just I came on here how its kind of when I did went behind kids because I looked at all right about the basic beings there so when I came here it was such a different feeling yet environment of Angela Johnson with as a teacher I went for ever you know and just appreciate like she she really helped me like that nice to patience process to get back into school and stuff like that so yeah that's that's really pretty much what I wanted to say and I don't regret coming to the school district not just feel

like me just need to know trying to implement the experiences that I had would like you not far as at what it's just taking a closer look into like because I came to visit a couple times you know football team and just the same body wasn't there so I don't know what Coach Dyer is doing or how each coaching or the title of coaches that he has brought with him but I feel like there needs to be some type of adjustments because not to sound racist or you know be taken wrong but a lot of those coaches like where couldn't connect with me the way other you know coaches could connect with me he he didn't see one of the other girls is seen in him so with basically based off just my experience with

how high school and being involved like nd Cal I basically based my like what my career all of my experiences so I'm currently majoring in business management marketing within online and sports performance training for youth so because I football they really changed my life the coaches literally changed a lot of things I was supposed to be blowing I was acting out to be myself it's a bit of a struggle so but basically they told me like if you want to be something in mind to change their actions so and I feel like with everything going on it all starts with you and it all starts with you know we got hotter and we be glass having and doing because believe it or not directly and indirectly everybody in that building place some global and titles

life and the morals is endings that the child will learn and the building is what they're forever going to remember and staff and stepmom so thank you so much for coming into your screens appreciated on't have anyone else here physically we'll go to meeting so today I want to speak more about some ideas and options of solutions first to speak on that should be obviously more diversity and our staff and educators as a population of students and families are changing and we need to reflect this paint diversity and our staff along with that when staff are higher I think that I should undergo a social justice truck mandatory training I think there should be a payment freak done I have three children in the school district and my to Elvis we want to spread through

high school this year the other will be a senior and the other will be a fifth grader and my two high school students showed us today have said that they did not have ever to that in history until high school which is unacceptable we need to stop just teaching about Martin Luther King jr. and Rosa Parks at the elementary level and then not speak about it into high school I also think you missed coming from students that I have had they would love to have a social justice Junior League so that they have effects want to speak they are more than capable they are more than ready and there should be for people of color as well as for the LGBT community when I attended the social justice camp for two times we have a

panel of students who said that they didn't have anything for LGBTQ until the end of no school went into high school but we have students that are speaking about I think your changes in their life with how they feel a certain way within LGBT community they have to be nothing to represent them at the elementary levels don't need anymore clubs for them as well I think all teachers if we want to show that we have an open class and open environment we need to have blacklivesmatter LGBTQ triangles and migration butterflies on our doors and we need to have quarterly or however often we that has handled live by students that we can hear their voices instead of waiting for something to happen and then wanting to listen they are mature they are the ones organizing

things that are going on right now and it all right thank you so much for listening I appreciate your time thank you doesn't appreciate your feedback don't worry they're not speaker um nobody else's put their name in the chat but they're more have joined since a meeting started okay so I know we have anybody else okay so guess what you've just joined us I'm gonna leave just if you put your name in the chat then we will call it that you want people to see two people to make comments honesty that sure any better I can't agree so oh these are they're having a little trouble hearing the speaker turn towards a reporter for a moment other able to hear us okay so a neat neat amounts commented that the 8080 classes do not seem

to be as accessible to minority students as white students perhaps the process for encouraging participation and AP classes can be more transparent it seems like parents of white stories push the school to let their kids take AP classes but the minority parents and kids are left out the use of teacher recommendations for entering an AP class might also introduce bias and then she went on to also say some improvement has been made and the curriculum language arts classes should work to include a broad range of authors not just white then the 9th graders had an option to read and he did last year but it was not required and they only read part of it white parents did not like the language in the book so it was optional Tom Slayer and Huck Finn have

offensive language it may have been who didn't agree on perhaps a systematic review of the curriculum is needed to update it Thank You Nina if anybody also would like to comment share perspectives suggestions solutions it says new comer what do you want to have left at work for doing this and this doesn't have to be the only time I'd suggest that as we move forward provide the community another opportunity and consider this just a beginning because there's a number of things up [Music] taking the time in the middle of day out of Friday a day that we should all be celebrating and just to introduce this gentleman on my right this is Chris Powell who is one of our new interim superintendents July 1 but he joined us today so there's a question about how

people can share their comments or concerns but not going out publicly shortly so you can you can email me I Sarah got Moses at the for - $8 for the school board president you can either Sarah maybe for Tunica recommendations we have to turn your mic off and then it will flow through the meeting and they will be able to hear better I think you might be buted Jimmy turn around my god yes and then also be one of our sends the message that was sent out regarding [Music] hey Spencer there's also a game I think even you don't say me which one you say [Music] absolutely I mean and as a board if there's anything you want to share and you don't want to share it in this public forum you can feel free

any Content that's kindly put the email address for Sarah Moses or president or you can email the roll forth and send your thoughts your comments or anything that you would like to share for that matter that you could prefer not to share I think just asked to speak oh she said she's gonna help include that's okay okay I suggest supposing she she doesn't have ever recommendation in long lines with AP courses and then the man a homerun with me with like six feet high so the comment I want to see less criminal justice more services so you know there's criminalizing young people of color and I just really frustrated that that's still going on so so I would really like to make have a school district make additional efforts to to keep criminal justice or

criminality out that's all thank you oh you're gonna hear me I know hip control D in your computer or exact the bottom of your screen mrs. barkos house paint can we have another four on after 4:30 p.m. so to do a be on will not be almost unnoticed 48 hours so Oh Lina is still trying to get her to phone to unmute Lina if you click your picture that should break up the volume just like your last message I see them you know these about lumpy horse I think I can do Oh Melissa's men should be able to actually I'm the one who actually is doing it but it says when I go over the thing that it will not allow me time I turn my computer off is that better Sarah Atkins can you

hear me okay and less a Korean thank you thank you Jessica can I see your comment now justices recently the word creep removed the ranking and validation I'm sorry valedictorian for gothic trying from ths this year we had our first and last black valedictorian okay so now I see more Jessica okay by discontinuing this we have not prevented other students of color from achieving this rank when I asked a school administrator why this decision was made it was stated to be paint because it became too competitive I find a disheartening that we will support the competition of athletes but not academics just it was on the sticker some having the top percentile of their class is the boost they need on college applications okay so anyone else up would like to share a comment or

perspective I'm sorry I don't see her oh I would love she's see it doesn't go any ot stated I would like the court to reconsider their division of how it affects students of color just to add to her initial comments and then Amy Fontana commented it said excellent point Jessica I also wonder if that if that my kids wouldn't be eligible for valedictorian at Orion scholarships so that's something that we as important up to this time - Thank You children of color specifically black children are introduced to the criminal justice system at a rate significantly higher than white children due to implicit and sometimes over-over bias and racist tendencies of the educational system and parties okay any other comments or Oh Tiffany Morris I would like to see more social work in the school when

handling students of color okay any other comments before we adjourn anybody else have anything to add like speak yeah I attended a Vargas I attempted to call high schools from second grade through high school my son graduated in 2000 on the team my other son just finished his freshman year both were and are involved in sports that has helped them but for my youngest to tell me he doesn't eat or drink ideas because he was afraid to use the restroom at school it's just hardening Tiffany Morrison most of them are in survival mode and when handled like a criminal it does not help on a Vargas asks what can be done to help students who are afraid so in this bar as you can reach out directly to me with more information regarding your concerns

okay do we have any other comments or people who would like to speak okay well if we don't have any other comment so anyone else who would like to speak we would just like to thank everyone who attended and participated today we appreciate your feedback tremendously and we encourage it and we would ask that you keep bringing it to our attention we do realize that racism is systemic and that those systems require dismantling so we thank you all for your feedback and your participation today okay so we'll go ahead and adjourn go go go sniffing David yeah thermal of this just another engineer Dennis yes David yes thank you
