011financial literacy is a test that is all across the nation and this was based off of last year's test results Miss Nipper was a teacher last year at Galileo and had students that participated in the test scores and Ms voter was another teacher that had students that participated on this assessment we were able to go to New York the end of April and we were recognized with becoming the num we were number 10 in small school status within the nation and number 16 overall um we're very excited we're very excited and the recognition does go to our teachers and students for their hard work with wise financial literacy while we were also in New York we had an awesome experience of listening to Bob pasani from The New York Stock Exchange give a presentation on
012why financial literacy is important so we hope to this year we hope to also at least score at the same level if not better and I would love to take a group of kids up there because we had other schools that had students there and I would love to take them to see one the Wall Street and the stock exchange area but also seeing what they've learned about financial literacy come to life thank you guys [Applause] I'm trying to explain [Music] laughs 4.1 public May address the board Madam clerk do we have anyone signed up thank you ma'am moving to 7.1 accounts payable and we're here from Miss Gillis at this time thank you good evening Vice chair Payne superintendent Harrison and members of the board this evening you have before you accounts payable warrants
013number 209 in the amount of 808 757.41 accounts payable warrant number 213 in the amount of 771 963.14 cents accounts payable warrant number 218 in the amount of 1 million 920 527.39 and accounts payable warrant number 222 and the amount of one million 146 630.47 if anyone has any questions or concerning the expenditures I would be happy to try to answer them next question uh thank you for the report I just would like to know I see that um on several of the pages it says board well what happens is during the year if we could issue checks and they don't get cashed we you know we avoid them and we we work with the city on that so we have to avoid the checks as Daryl you know older checks so we void out
014the old checks okay if they're not cash at a certain time period so on some accounts it was sent three times yeah like if our vendor list if the if the information is not as accurate or not I've been to this like say I've been there changes addresses if they don't tell us and then we send a check to the old address or we send it to a PO box and they change PO boxes that happens sometimes so we were cleaning out our vendor logs and we um voided out those checks take a peanut bar outstanding check balances so all these all these checks are set by mail is that right yes so we have to buy stamps for all these well we don't buy stamps but we have a postage machine so it wouldn't
015be better to do the direct or we need that that's something we're looking into but you know we we you know work with the city so we we have to see if we would be able to do that but we uh we do mail out checks so on on a I mean a vendor checks obviously everybody on payrolls direct deposit okay for the most part we are working on different yes being able to make direct payments thank you moving to 9.1 student code of conduct and we'll hear from this Harris at this time Vice chair Payne board members superintendent Harrison we had a group that came together that looked at our student code of conduct we were asked to update or to revise our student code of conduct so we had our our team and
016these are our team members so we have two team members here today um Jeff McLaughlin and also um Woody Arnold and so I'm going to go over the changes that we have made as far as with the student code of conduct first as you can see um the change that we made is we changed from student core to student course and so it is a code of responsibility expectations and support so we added some support in our student code of conduct because we noticed it had violations and then consequences but we want to make sure that we have some supports so we won't be get to the point where we're violating the core and so next we also added some included some support in our tier um support system and that aligns with our vtss
017which is the Virginia tier supports and that's on page 9 through 12. we also added some prevention and positive approaches and support for discipline and that can be found on page 14 through 15 and we also added Universal best practices strategies for classroom and these are research best strategies for classrooms and those are located on page 16 and 17. next we included the Virginia profile to a graduate and those five C components critical thinking creative thinking communication collaboration and citizenship because that is our goal is we want to make sure all of our students get to graduate and get to that graduation and so we've added that support in here and so adding these supports helped with the whole student it helps students develop self-awareness self-management social awareness relationship skills and responsible decision making skills
018and that goes along with our social emotional learning and this is from caps castle and that is collaborative for social emotional learning and so as you can see um on the picture it has our communities our family and caregivers our schools and our classrooms when all of these in Encompass our students and they Circle our students again it aligns with that profile from the Virginia graduate it has that social awareness social management the responsibility decision making relational skills and social awareness and so this encompasses and it supports the whole student so that it can have a healthy engaged and supportive and challenging learning environment next we have our tiered support tiered system of supports and again that goes along with our Virginia tiered system and this tiered support is for academics and also for behaviors
019each school has an esfit team which is a school-based intervention team and they meet and they give students support depending on which tier that they're in um tier three is intensive support tier two is targeted support and tier one is highly Quality quality support for our students and so also what we've included are three the three-tiered approach we've also included on the components of the the PO the the components of the approach and also the management how you can support students and that is can be found on page 9 through 12. and we wanted to give some optimistic mindsets to promote school Success and we wanted to create these positive mindsets that is conducive to learning um for students and also for the adults and you can find those listed on page 14. next we
020look at how can we switch the discipline mindset looking at this looking at discipline through another lens and working to create positive changes from a punitive um discipline to a restorative discipline and helping students to make better choices we've also added some Universal best practices and strategies from the classroom and these are research-based strategies that are utilized across content area and across grade level and as you see we have um classroom management skills some classroom instructional skills and that in turn helps with the classroom discipline as you can see in the center it has the circle that they all work together to help with our students and give them support and those can be found on page 16 and 17 and 17 goes into more of a definition of what each approach is our rights
021and responsibilities we've kind of changed the format it was in long paragraphs so we kind of made the format with bulletin just for it to be easier to read and so we also added um so some added additional verbiage and we also added rights and responsibilities not just for our students but for our parents and our caregivers and also for our staff and so the students rights and responsibilities on page 19 that parents and caregivers right responsibilities are 19 to 20 and the staff rights and responsibilities are on page 20 and 21. we've also added levels of intervention so we've changed this format and so basically what we have is each level level one two three four and five for grades K through five and then we also have levels one through five for grade
022six through twelve and basically what it gives is it gives um the different code but it also gives some prevention strategies that teachers and classroom teachers can use to help the student not violate the code and then it also gives some behavior and consequences that a teacher can use to help redirect a student and so we change the format to make it just more friendly friendly user and um the levels can be found on 25 to 34 for K through 5 and 35 to 45 for grades 6 through 12. and so we know that vaping is an issue we have some concern with vapings and so what we've done is we've done it appear a tier approach to our vaping and so um we have a tiered approach up to levels one First Defense second
023offense third offense and fourth defense and so what we've added here is also um some prevention and intervention components and so we're working with DCPS and they have a program called catch your breath and it is a nationwide program that we use to talk to students about the harmful effects of um of vaping strategies what they can do to overcome vaping and preventive strategies so if they're vaping some prevention strategy so they won't continue to vape and so we're excited about that and so those are four classes for one hour and they can be after school they can attend the classes after school or they can attend the classes on Saturday school then we moved to fighting and so fighting we've moved the um infraction up to a level four it was a two or
024three we've added a level four because we found some more aggressive fightings and we found some fights where there were um like three or four and so we've moved that up to a level four and so those can be found on page 50 for K through five and six through twelve will be on page 55. this one is fighting assault and battery uh staff and expulsion is recommended and law enforcement will be contacted for DPS students who strike or commit violence against staff members that school Personnel or any school official we want to send a clear message that hitting striking causing the injury to an employee is unaccepted unacceptable and it will not be tolerated we know there's some extenuating circumstances so some of our EC students that may have some intellectual challenges and also
025looking at the age when you're talking about contacting law enforcement and so on page 50 we'll be um that change for K through 12 and 55 4 6 through 12. we looked at cell phone violations and we've contacted different districts through throughout the state and throughout the nation cell phone is is coming to issue in all of our schools and so what we've changed is our first defense the administrator will compensate the cell phone and it will return to the parent at the end of the day and then also the second offense we had we've added before school after school and Saturday school some school before we just only had um after school but some schools said they do their detention before school and after school so we wanted to include that in there and
026on the third offense a discipline referral is issued and the student cell phone privileges will be banded for the remainder of the year and so what we want to emphasize is unplug to learn students cannot learn when they're got their earphones earbuds I iPods in we want them to unplug to learn so when they come into the school we want them to unplug so they can be engaged in learning student attendance so we align this with our changes in our policy Jed on student attendance and so we have the illness Court required Court death and family religious holiday field trips but they've added these three other components for excused absences middle school and high school students can have one day of excused absence to engage in Civic events a maximum of three days per school
027year to participate in a 4-H educational program and activity and then also if they are a part of a federally organized recognized tribal nation that is headquartered in Virginia they can be granted one day to attend their nation's pow pow and that can be found on page 57 to 58. and then we added a noted change to our parent receipt statement and so we added the following statement the following updates have been made to the student course handbook and will have an impact on disciplinary action imposed on your child should they violate the below in fractions and so we've included in their vaping and we've referenced it to page 52 fighting battery and assault to an employee and we referenced that on page 50 and 55 student attendance we referenced it on page 57 and
02858 and on cell phones we referenced it to page 60. so we wanted to make sure that the parents know when they're signing this acknowledgment the changes that will occur with these three and so we've put that in our um our parent acknowledgment and we also put the page where they can reference Define that acknowledgment as requests from Mr Pennington does anyone have any questions I actually have two okay one when you you gave the and I'm just it's this to satisfy my curiosity on The Vaping where they have option one option two what's the difference why would someone choose option one or option two over yeah let's say I'm the administrator in the case it's called vaping what's the difference that's what I'm so option one it keeps the scholar in the classroom okay
029um it it does they get the suspension but it allows them to stay in the classroom and serve out that that probationary period uh the option two is they they automatically volunteer to go into that disciplinary sanction okay so the student would rather get sent home in a day volunteer they you well you'd be surprised that they'll they they us they say they're addicted to The Vaping and they'll choose to go into them to go home so they can be yes okay okay so that's a student choice that was my question students okay and my second question had to do with you mentioned Saturday school we're going to have Saturday school some schools some schools were saying that they would have Saturday schools and so when we met with principals about it um some of
030them said oh yeah we were thinking about Saturday school so that's why we included academic Saturday schools Mr Bowman does at Johnson all right okay um okay so I I just like that idea okay we've uh met with some principals and talked to them and so that's they said Saturday school so yeah I have I have a state question I'm not sure about related to service can we use it to recoup uh A.D it's ADM we cannot we tried we went all the way to the top okay I just thought that might be a good way to get a kid who's missing school and come in on Saturday make up those days that would be nice yeah yeah well if a kid is doing it on purpose it wouldn't help yeah you know we couldn't
031get him to come to school on Tuesday uh Dallas we're going to get him to come on Saturday yes sir okay that's all I had thank you Dr Silverman yes I'm looking at the secondary at the cell phone or portable device policy secondary schools and I'm reading cellular phone let's see second secondary students may use their cell phones while riding school school bus by utilizing it so fourth uh and then however the phone must be turned off and stored out of sight after the first spell equivalent signifying the start of the school day the funds must remain off until the last spell are equivalent signifying the end of the school day to what extent is that being enforced do you know being enforced right now well then let me ask a further questions to what
032uh to what extent are we planning to enforce it we are you know when we meet with principals that you know we spend Summer Leadership speaking the principals and teachers um inconsistency it leads a lot of mistrust so our plan this summer is to go through our code of conduct and emphasize you know the ramifications for fights the ramifications for dealing with adults when children um right up front I had a one of the local County High School students say to me you know my phone came out just to look at the time and I was given two days of in-school suspension and so I think there's precedent of us being very serious but we're not going to tolerate having our teachers and and adults homes because they asked for a cell phone and and
033so we we plan to enforce it pretty heavy if we want to be serious about the classroom and supporting our teachers we have to be serious agree 100 so I guess and so we're giving training this summer we have some professional development that's gone over the code so we'll send a letter to all parents emphasizing some of the changes in the code so and this will be posted till June is that what yes ma'am yes we're not asking for a vote tonight want to post it for feedback more questions thank you so much moving to 11.1 public notice Thursday June 1st 4 P.M policy meeting Thursday June 1st 5 30 p.m regular meeting and then Thursday June 15th we'll have our 5 30 p.m regular meeting other important dates to remember we have early release
034and last day of school for students Friday June 9th we also want to announce Galileo's graduation will be at the Avery North Campus Saturday June 10th at 9 00 a.m doors will open at 8. A.M George Washington High School graduation will be at averitt North Campus Saturday June 10th at 2 pm doors will open at one P.M I'd like you to keep those dates and and the events that's coming up and front of you at this time we'll move to 12.1 we'll have Personnel recommendation I think we're here from Dr Halloran at this time now hollering will receive those separately okay absolutely yes we presented or prepared for you two personal recommendations we will first present the first one for your review consideration and approval this is an action item that I have a motion
035to approve second promotion to approve by Dr Campbell second by Mr McWilliams in the discussion Madam clerk please call the road yes okay we've also presented the second personal recommendation for you along with the attached certification forms and documents do I have a motion this action item to have a motion to approve second motion moved by Dr Campbell's second by Miss favorite in the discussion please call the road Dr Campbell yes yes how many I'm staying Cambodia I also explained from voting on this matter thank you thank you moving to 13.1 School naming committee and we're here from Dr Lyle at this time good evening Vice chair uh Payne board members Dr Hairston so at our last work session um gave you all shared an overview of the school naming uh process that we've been
036going through for the for this year um Miss averitt and Mr McWilliams have been serving as the board members on the school naming committee and so what I did is I compiled all of the recommendations that we had received so these were two of them right there we'll go to the next slide so these are all the people um and again several of them of them are connected to Danville in some way and when we uh we were approached about renaming glh Johnson we did activate our policy and had a committee of working on this that was there were varying opinions relative to the local community leaders uh and and and I personally haven't grown up here and knowing the community new Ruby Archie I work with Ruby Archie as a teacher she has a
037library named after she was a mayor she was a phenomenal teacher at George Washington High School and not only did she expect a lot from her students but she expected a lot from us as teachers also seven Massey and I served together as administrators he was not only a mentor but a beloved leader among administrators and a great educator and always an advocate for students and Wendell Scott Wendell Scott is a um is you you're aware we all remember Mr Scott walking around in his overhauls and working on cars his son as an educator and they've been very involved in the education of of our community and when we took this to the com committee they struggled with naming because there's so many emotions associated with naming something after someone and so as we came
038to to look at the others Dr law did a little more research on the others yes ma'am so um we received a nomination of Catherine Johnson who was a mathematician who worked for NASA we also received another one from Melba Mountain he was also a mathematician who worked for NASA Roy seals I had to do some digging there but he does have he did have ties to the Danville area and so those were the majority of the the recommendations that we received were specifically to name this new school after a person so then we started looking at um you know the current names of our schools and so when we looked at those you know most not well a good majority of them are somehow connected to the neighborhood where they're located so you know
039we have Forest Hills Glenwood which is currently not operational that Park Avenue School field and Woodbury Hills are all tied to that particular community so given all of that information and consideration uh if you go to the next slide presented to you all this as a recommendation to consider which would be Arden Hills Elementary School and and the question really becomes how do we recognize not only for likes of the George Washington High School to Banquets each year starting in the fall of 2024 and that would be a Hall of Fame type banker and that will give everyone an opportunity to to nominate individuals who greatly impacted our community and have the prominently information about the prominently displayed so that we could honor multiple individuals and it's not just one or two and so again
040based on the work that was put forth in the research this is our recommendation right this is an action item maybe that's a question yes sir just one question I hope this isn't isn't Patty but I was wondering is is Arnot Hills I know there's Forest Hills and that's a common name is that area actually spoken of as Arnett Hills that area was known as an estate so it was a very large farm I think Mr hackworth may have been historically one of the um the family owners it was divided up and at one time Virginia was not I mean Danville was broken up into the states and so in that area um after the the arnag and all the streets were named when it was broken up into a farm area um that area
041assumed the name of just North animal so it was never after was named there was an estate name given it to it it never really assumed it in formal name but the reason I was asking us noticed that we have Park we had Park Avenue and and that and that's named after the street and I'm just wondering why Arnette Hills rather than Arnett Pull-A-Part is what on that Boulevard here yeah Arnett Hills kind of has a nicer nicer ring to it okay but it is named after the street Okay so the Arnot Avenue maybe but we just didn't flow okay just to be honest okay well yeah any more questions this is an action item do I have a motion to approve motion to approve I'm stomach second we have emotionally approved by Mr McWilliams
042second by Miss averitt any discussion Madam clerk please call the roll yes thank you Dr thank you moving to 4.1 Finance report we're here from Miss Gillis at this time good evening once again you happy for you the revenue and expenditure statements for the month ended April 30th 2023 you also have before you the reappropriations report for carryover funds for the month of April if anyone that has any questions I'll be happy to try to answer them item so we'll have a second motion movement about Dr Campbell seconded by Mr Excuse me Dr Silverman in the discussion Madam clerk please call the room yes yes move it to 15.1 division organization chart update we'll hear from this battle at this time good evening Dr Harrison and school board members I'm here to bring an update
043about the curriculum instruction organizational chart and to seek approval for the changes the purpose of updating our cni instructional chart is to restructure the division to provide a more intensive support and focus for our schools so that we can continue our academic journey and our academic growth for our students and also the Greater Community before I talk about the changes I want to just talk about some of our growth thus far so if you look at the graphic that's displayed this is our 2122 Elementary Sol results our proficiency and also our growth the blue bar is proficiency the green bar is growth the first chart is English language arts and reading for elementary and if you look across we have had improvements in significant improvements from last year to the 21-22 school year but our
044ultimate goal is to have that blue bar which is proficiency as tall or taller than the growth bar but we do understand that growth does precede proficiency and if you look also at the next one that's mathematics in 2122 we're at 37 proficiency and then 70 growth and again we want the blue chart to be as tall or even taller than the green bar this is our secondary result the first one is um English and then second one is mathematics I wanted to highlight our early literacy initiative that we are currently working on and looking at the trends how we're improving that on early literacy because early literacy is the foundation for all other content areas so if you look at the first one fall 21 12 20 21 Paul Pals data if you look
045across the First Column is grade K the next one is grade one and then the last one is grade two but won't fall into fall 2021 we have 44 of our students reading below grade level in kindergarten and if you look down if you go down to fall 2022 it decreased significantly from one year to the next to 27 below and then as of March 2023 we're at 22 so if you look at the kindergarten that's a 22 percent um Improvement of our students to be on grade level and if you look across first grade and second grade it's very similar but overall we still need to reduce that amount of students who are below level in Reading in grades K one and two we want that to be less than five percent so here
046is our current organization organizational chart the one on the left is the career Construction Division the way it stands currently this school year um if the green represents changes the red represents removals and when you see orange that's new um positions so on the left we currently have under my department I have two administrative assistants that was in place um when I arrived so we're going to shift that position which is Administrative Assistant to the curricular destruction director because currently she that person does not have an administrative assistant and then the red bar is professional learning that was Dr Tut's position she has went on to a new division in another state and we're not going to continue that position we're going to expand it to all of the Departments so each department will be
047responsible for their own professional learning and we'll have a framework where we can track it across the division without a person leading that work so that's the empty spaces when you see it on the right side this is our assessment and state reporting on the left is Dr Newton all by her Lonesome and we require a lot of work from Dr Newton we require her to generate several reports and as we're moving forward we have to have a more um structured support for data reporting so that we can predict well in advance where we are so we need a data protocol to help with that so we're going to give her some support with an assistant director this is services for exceptional children the left is our current framework and the right is what is
048Shifting to there isn't any new positions there it's just a re-structure of the focus of the work currently under exceptional children the focus has been on compliance and as you know we got off of the um cap with those compliance things those are important but now we need to continue that work but shift to academic Focus for our students with disabilities so the two green individuals will focus on academics this is the curriculum instruction division the left is where we are currently and then right is the changes we're going to add assistant director for construction to support Ms agner in her work because that's a big job curriculum instruction is the heartbeat of our division and it takes a lot of moving parts to get that moving um so that's the orange the orange color
049box and if you look down where it has the green is coordinator 2 of advanced learning and choice programs um the that exists already we're just adding the choice programs to Ms Bullard because she already manages like early college she manages Galileo and all the choice programs like AET and gov school so she will also help with um tailor and activate and then for the coordinator we're moving from two mathematics coordinators to one and then for the literacy part to help us support that literacy Focus the four Specialists will have a specific area so for example one will work on early literacy to help us reduce that the number of students below will have one that work on secondary literacy one who zoom in on writing because we do need a focus to somebody to
050really help us monitor writing and then also curriculum design because we have to keep decks up and running so just to summarize the the information I just shared um five positions have been reduced overall one director one coordinator and two Behavior Specialists we added two assistant directors and we shifted the administrative assistance from me too um Kim agner and we restructured three departments and then I didn't mention this but the title change is going to shift from curriculum instruction to curriculum instruction and assessment to Encompass all of the Departments um under that one umbrella questions yes sir um this one I was noticing under early literacy and and if you'll sort of explain to me the distinction I see it's Pals data or fall and Falls of 21 and 22 and then it's elf data
051what are what are those so sales data is the universal screener that the state requires us to implement three times a year we implement it in August and then in January and then we're implementing it currently um so we'll have that results um once they finish that the elf data which is our early literacy foundations program that we Implement as a division where we track every 10 or 15 days how kids are tracking on grade level for reading so that elf that is our internal results and it is that is that uh yep is that uh anchored to elf data in March of 2022 or how does that proceed we implemented it this school year okay so that we implemented that this school year to have a more intensified approach to tracking our students who
052are below grade level in reading but you you feel that data corresponds closely yeah because there's the exact same domains for our health and Paladin the exact same domain okay yes foreign only one question I think I know the answer but I wanted to clarify that just looking up at where it says uh 20 21 22 second result secondary yeah I noticed that um we have a year that's left out is that related to covet yes that's all I want to know you were right that's it so this is foreign approved by Dr Campbell second about Mr McWilliams Madam clerk please call the road yes thank you thank you ma'am 18.1 board requests for information for future agenda items hey Mr uh Mr Payne and Miss Walker your discipline report will be ready for the
053work session and for the regular board meeting if you so desire but it'll be ready June 1st write comments Mr Spencer Dr Harrisburg yes this this week has been well last week was actually every week it's a great week but uh last week I'm excited to have our track open I sat through a regular meat yesterday a district meet it was really really um really exciting to see kids out there participating in the sense of Pride they had and and secondly I want to thank River Oak Church for supporting us this week with school field so we had a plan this week where they would support us Monday through Friday Friday is our last day parents actually like it but unfortunately you got to go back to the norm on Monday but they were very
054supportive providing fruits and snacks for our children calming them to ensure that they were Calm before testing and we just didn't want our parents 150 car riders to be in the throes of the traffic because of the new opening of the casino and it worked very very well and we have the Fall Festival this weekend so we know Friday will be a busy hectic day and and the pastor pastor old and he was just phenomenal so I want to I certainly thank them in an informal way at a later time but they were great let's call the rule good evening again just want to ditto on what Dr Harrison said um um being there doing the track opening it was extremely nice recognizing again with the passport to Great Adventures the school the elementary schools
055that were recognized um appreciating our business partners and that partnership because I think that's important and then the wonderful achievement with Galileo in regards to having a high school with their Finance classes and then just appreciating um even though it still has to be approved but the hard work that Mrs Harris and student Support Services did in um making some changes with our student code of conduct so and then also just appreciating um on some of the social media I saw where some of the elementary schools they were like cheerleaders for the kids for the sols this week and so to see them smiling and knowing that they have to go take a test I think that says a lot about the principle I think I saw Park Avenue and I saw GL Johnson so
056just thank you and all the administrators of what you're doing and we're almost at the finish line for this year I I too went to the track meet yesterday I enjoyed it seeing the kids out there from school schools all over the place I was kind of disappointed because I discovered that Galileo wasn't in the same mood because ours so I believe that would have been a few more wins for us I I I'm mindful when we went to the opening of the field and they had all these track athletes and I talked to athletes from DW from Galileo and from Avery and they were all excited about it but one of the things that sticks out to me most about that day is one is a Galileo runners started running around the track and
057I looked at him and said I couldn't run that fast for 10 feet and he's running around the whole track so we we do have some things to look forward to in our track and field programs from the kids in our district and um and many of them did quite well I wasn't there for the whole meet also I want to congratulate the readers those kids who were in here reading in the schools for their reading and you know you see the one little girl says she's read 80 books and probably half the room hasn't read 80 books this year um I read every day and I haven't read it so uh I just wanted to congratulate them on that also the vsba vbsa honor roll people for for vspn honor roll people for just
058their support to our schools and Galileo on your um incredible literacy feat that's really something to be proud of hopefully we can get it not just Galileo but GW get all our kids involved in something like that because I wish I'd have had financial literacy when I was in school I'll just leave it at that last thing thank you for the disciplinary work you guys have done I really appreciate the fact that you want to protect our kids and we added some emphasis on what happens when you fight what happens if you attack or assault a teacher I I was in schools for 30 years I've been assaulted a number of times by kids in many in some cases I know of one in particular they basically did nothing even though I put him up
059for expulsion but they basically kicked it back but the whole point to it is uh we need to let them know that when it comes to your phones it's not a police performance school's not a place for phones you don't need I've heard people say well we need a phone in school no you don't if you need to call somebody tell your teacher and if it's important they'll send you to the office in the office will call for you they don't need the phones they're a distraction I know that from my own personal experience they're a distraction in the classroom any of you out here who've taught in classrooms yourselves with folk you know it too it's a big distraction and a big problem and it interferes with learning and I like the fact that
060we're taking the responsibility of removing the phone from the kid away from the teacher and putting it in the administrative or Securities hand so the teacher could just go on with instruction and it won't impede the instruction in class anyway I've talked enough I've talked too much anyway but we've had a great some great things going on in this meeting today well I'm going to be brief and concur with Mr McWilliams on what I think is an important policy as far as cell phones go um I've been in the classroom for the last four and a half months and I've seen it up front up close I should say and I think it's an important uh step for us one personal note I'll be finishing I've been teaching as many of you know in Martinsville
061High School and have enjoyed working with the fine Administration and staff and teachers there but I'm very much looking forward to being in Danville much more and working much more diligently in my position on the school board um yes and I have to agree with what's already been said um again thank you Miss Ramsey and Galileo congratulations to you all again for your accomplishments and hopefully you know you place again and we can get some students up there I think it would be an awesome experience for them um Miss Harris thank you for the presentation on the code of conduct I like the addition of the supports I think that's very important to have those those resources there preventative and as far in not just as for discipline but for the preventive preventative measures as
062well I'm saying I like the slogan unplug to learn I love that so I think that'll stick hopefully it will anyway um and congratulations to all the readers um our our community everyone who's been logging in on the beanstack keep reading keep reading I think they say readers uh makes leaders and however that saying is so I'm just encouraging children to continue to read I think it's a great initiative so I'm enjoying that and thank you to our business partners those Partnerships are very very important so thank you to all of our business partners the more we read the better we read I like that um yeah so thankful for our children reading um the track is outstanding and I want to also just say to the community this is the first time I've had
063the opportunity to say this but um as many of you know my my father transitioned and I had not had the opportunity to thank the community for all active kindness so thank you for that last but not least uh Mr Terrell Payne you've done a stellar job so I know you may have been a little nervous [Laughter] Jesus didn't say well said he said well done well done have good and frequency thank you yes um first I would like to thank Miss Harris and Mr McLaughlin and Mr Woody he's not here we was at George Washington High School this week and Mr McLaughlin if you could stand please um we always talk about a lot of things that happens at George Washington High School but we were able to uh be in George Washington High
064School on this week and the how the students were in order and quiet not in a loud talking going to class communicating and I want to say to you publicly that we want to thank you for all your hard work and your security staff for amazing job at George Washington High School can we get a man also on this week we had the opportunity to be at Gibson Elementary School for their pep rally for their Sol kickoff and I want to say that you know once again George Washington High School stepped up the band came over the cheerleaders came over uh some of the graduates came over and they just put it you know a awesome pep rally together for Gibson Elementary School so I want to say to all the teachers and the faculty
065we thank you for all your hard work the school year is almost over please hang in there and The Best Is Yet To Come also thank you Dr Harrison for your leadership and I also want to include it in with this right here we may not look at all the school boards but when you look at all the school boards across the state across the country they are not like this board this is a strong board and I want to say to you all on the behalf of Mr Graves and I guess Dr Harrison as well we are this is a strong board and this is something that we all should be proud about so as I conclude I'd like to say thank you for allowing me to share this meeting on tonight and we
066have a res a closed session and do I have a motion to recess so move for five minutes drive a second second all right motion what Dr Campbell second book Dr Silverman the amount of clerk please call the road
