003so let's go to recognitions Sam okay tonight we are here to honor Angel Acosta Leone if you please come forward angel [Applause] okay uh he is the recipient of a national Hispanic recognition award through the College Board and as you probably know the College Board creates assessments such as the SAT PSAT and our AP exams they served in equity initiative a few years ago and created a national recognition programs for underrepresented students across the nation these are highly respected honors to carry a lot of weight when it comes to college and scholarship opportunities high school students are invited to apply and based on their AP scores or PSAT scores and also a GPA 3.5 or above he obviously met this criteria our counseling department assisted him with the application and of course he he is

004one of the winners this year he is a several AP courses and currently is enrolled at tcd where he is taking multimedia and TV production program it sounds interesting oh that's wonderful all right good um he also has participated in tennis and bowling here at Fenton and so we'd like to again thank him for his hard work over the last four years in receiving this prestigious award uh Angel if you want to say a few words first of all I would just like to thank you for recognizing my achievement and I'd also like to pay thanks to my parents they play a very important role in just helping me become the person I am today and a lot of what I did is owe to them they grew up in Mexico where they didn't have

005as many opportunities as they did have here uh yeah they made it to the middle school equivalent uh in Mexico and then they had to leave it in order to help their their parents make money so I think I'm I'm able to like carry on their torch because they made so many sacrifices for me and it's just I'm very humble for it I'm very thankful for them and they played a very important role in my life today and yeah my dad's here today and he's one of the ones that really encouraged me he would always say to try my best and try my best and do the best I can or don't do it at all that's what they've always held me in and I'm just very thankful for that I I still hold that

006true to my heart because that's how I want to go about life I want to do my best and always succeed thank you [Applause] if you'd like we're going to take a picture up front with the board and invite the family off yeah thank you so much thank you come forward come forward here there you go everybody's good Ness all right we're going to take three pictures one with earphones throw your teeth all right [Applause] thank you congratulations congratulations again to the family and well well said that was a well-set speech so we go to infinite informationals thank you so real quick every year we have to submit a fall student enrollment uh for the Illinois State Board of Education I just wanted to go over that with you I've been sharing this with the

007board as well as our viewers of our enrollment for this year as expected it's about 1 450 students which has been stable for the last five or so years some of the demographics we have about two-thirds of our students 971 are Latino 369 are white 35 African Americans 33 Asians two more releases at 40 male 770 uh female 680 homeless students it's 35 a little bit higher than what we're in the past not by much but it is a little higher our El students are English Learners or multilingual speakers um or it's it's it has increased as we all know at 3 21 this has been the highest since I've been here last eight years and we're we're projected to have more students special ed at 208 that's about normal which is approximately 10 to

00812 percent of our population and free and reduced lunch at 798 which is about 53 52 percent of our students so just wanted to make sure that the board is aware of our demographics and enrollment next slide with that I would like to hand this off to Sam in regards to our school report card preview the the official report card will come from isby on October 27th a couple days from now at 9 A.M so we wanted just to give you a preview you will get a copy of the actual report card when it's released Sam Thanks James and so we can go to the next slide one of the places to start is there's a program that's been going on for a few years now through the state where schools are rated we are

009rated commendable you could see the definition there we don't have any underperforming student groups a graduation rate clearly higher than 67 percent and we're not quite in the top 10 percent Statewide which would be exemplary but you know commendable is is where we're at and we appreciate that designation and clearly we're not in those other categories uh graduation rate as you can see um gone down a little bit during the covet years but we are back about 90 percent and um you know we're anticipating hopefully that that continues to go up so we can get approached closer to those pre- pandemic levels we're very proud of our ninth grade on track this is an important category that predicts future success for our students so right now if you're a freshman you're considered on track if

010you're on track to basically graduate within four years now you can see 2021 it dipped down to 82 percent that was coming off of the uh the the coveted years where we were remote and then maybe partially hybrid but you could see you know some kids just didn't connect in the remote say it just didn't work so that we took a hit there you can also see the year before it actually was higher but that was also um if you were called March 2020 when we went out for basically three months and basically everybody passed I mean let's be honest um those were really crazy times but I just want to kind of account for what's this fluctuation that we've we've seen and that's what we attribute it to and you can see now we're

011back about 91.7 which is a good number we want to obviously continue and get that higher we're very pleased with our attendance rate this year which is currently still holding above 90 percent and actually freshman is about 91.5 percent so the way we look at it is you know we're trying to build those attendance patterns early with kids that will sustain throughout the four years you can see during those coveted years attendance to dip some of that is attributed to kids not logging in and if you're a remote you didn't log in you weren't there those are you know we tried to intervene but that we attribute to that debt now we're trying to build regular School attendance patterns because obviously we know attendance equals school Success and right now our kids are doing a

012nice job with that even though um we have had some illnesses out there like me so but they're plowing through it and doing a great job academics and mtss as you know we have talked quite a bit about mtss but the reason we do that is it's Central to our strategy to helping kids basically recover from whether it be learning laws very so emotional needs that that are still ongoing and so this is going to go on for years so we emphasize you know academically we're we're committed this comes from James from the very top that we provide the resources kids need to be successful so as we've mentioned in the past groups we have active groups going on right now addressing whether it be academic social emotional attendance whatever it is we have Innovative

013programs where we're actually picking up kids from their home we have volunteers going out because unfortunately not every kid gets up and they're supposed to so we're trying to connect and find real real life supports that kids need yes multi-tiered system of supports yeah no no that's okay yeah so again attendance reports interventions academically obviously we have our resource Labs fully functional where kids can get support bison time we have kids all over the place getting resource help during that time after school tutoring I just saw the room today was filled with students working on math and math support during study hall which were piloting this year where instead of kids sitting in a study hall we're saying come on down to the math lab where if you're struggling you can get help during the

014day so some of these things that were just constantly looking at how can we continue to make strides the the other area we're proud of and we talked about this with James and the team is there's a school highlight section so we've worked diligently to kind of fill those in I'll wait till the report card actually comes out like James said provided a copy but basically it gives us a chance to tell our story as far as here's what we are doing whether it be the academic programs you know we're a comprehensive high school with a lot of electives a lot of choice James talks a lot about tcd we know kids will have opportunities to we just heard angel he's doing a TV programming at tcd we we can't do that here but we

015provide opportunities for kids um Athletics activities and awards we're going to highlight those uh you know as we mentioned our soccer team this year's second year in a row We Run The One Regional um and we're going to talk a little bit about obviously our speech successes too Career Development we're going to talk here more in a minute on another slide on that and then there's also categories on facilities and Personnel so we love to celebrate speech seven state championships over the last four years you may remember Noelia with the wrestling state championship so again this is going to go in the report card so if someone's looking through it they could they could see all the things that we're we're doing I'm not going to read through all this but basically you can see

016we have dual credit opportunities we'll go through a few here in a minute tcd options and and then we also have workplace experiences for kids which we're developing so here's here's what's on track for dual credit next school year this is really exciting because I know for a few years we've been making those connections finding the right staff talking to Cod but these are you know assuming we approve all these for next year which I'm sure we will dual credit where students are gaining college credit taking these courses so we're excited about that that's also going to go on the school report card and that's it any any school report card type questions so the the exemplary yes can we talk about that more uh or I'm sorry the commendable how do we get to

017what's the percentage you got to be top ten what was the number for us uh I honestly kid I don't have that information in front of me but I could something I could look into to see how close we were to that yeah thank you just an FYI to other school district district 2 of Bensonville and District district 7 of Wooddale also got commendable um and then the the next note is uh enrollment we had 1450 yes where do we Trend as far as historically stable okay stable let me know what the board made a comment one of the board members made a comment that enrollment is declining this is obviously not a sign of that we had a strong freshman class this year okay so we're at that sweet spot of 1450 1475 and

018be prepared we might get 20 more students throughout the year or we can lose 20 students it depends on on migration obviously and where folks are landing so I'm really happy it's not 13.75 I think someone mentioned that yeah and I think this it's been a pretty robust year kids transferring in I mean some kids transfer out but more more coming in then are transferring out yeah so you know there's myths of saying we're declining enrollment the ebb and flow of the student enrollment is pretty much there but the trend is stable it's stable okay yeah I think you got to look at that four-year average to come up with something because there's always going to be that up and down up and down and I believe our fetal schools as stable as well I

019would say anywhere between one to I'll say 0.5 to 1 percent that's real good and what we do here Carrie is that anyone that's thinking of dropping out we make a call we're going to say what is it why do you want to do such a thing is it I'm working Mr L okay let's let's change your schedule okay our counselors our administrators are going to try to work with individuals to avoid that that very traumatic choice I believe because we need you to to graduate from high school so and just to add to that we have some alternative programs even within the school like if someone's doing for some reason really likes remote or shorter day um and as Michelle's pointed out we're we're trying to connect those kids with more Purpose with workplace

020type of experiences too so if they're closed and we can somehow connect with them what do you want to do when you graduate maybe it's the workforce we can connect them somewhere we hope that that would help a potential Dropout too right so that's a real good point too Carrie is you know hey look you're at 91 93 94 what happened to the six percent some kids just take a little longer some takes five years right right but our Dropout kids saying hey look I want to drop out that's about one percent and we go through a system where the counselors try to talk about so we reach out to the parents to make sure we exhaust every last um effort and create Pathways for these students to stay in school did were there a

021few that didn't return from you know the pandemic like we're there and then we even we did very aggressive home visits at the start of the year as we talked about a few months ago which yielded connections with kids or the realization that they're not here anymore and that's part of the mystery of some of these dropouts like you talked about because a kid could just leave and not continue their education somewhere and we can't really try to help them too much anymore which can count against you too right so there's if we're up above 90 percent graduation rate in four years you know you think about it you could hold you can almost list out the kids yes and when we do that it's like oh yeah that kid here's that kids between all

022of our team we're gonna know kind of what's going on and and certainly how we can try to come up with something that works but some of them just they don't return and they moved or something and they they count against us could I if we can get this number how much do we spend per student per year that is in the school report card but I yeah yeah I think it's just over 20 000 which is a pretty high number I would say is it can I think so yeah it's a good it's a good number yeah yeah it's average in DuPage it's higher compared to CPS but you got to look you know we are in DuPage right then it's super high compared to the southern states so in in it depends on

023the context we're right there where it needs and that's both um Bruce expenditure for students is in two ways one's the actual expense of educating the students but there's also the facilities and the non-living things so yeah it's just not hey look this is how much it costs there's the facilities the safety the teachers the staff so yeah that's all taken it's another metric to look at yes that's another method and to be honest with you I could look it up now but right now it's all sealed because they're going to put it out tomorrow morning so I so I literally I can't look it up I would probably regret not saying it so I'm going to say it um you know I remember going back a few years when we did the strategic planning

024and you know we we did the good to Great planning and we're satisfied with commendable I get it but but it's not good to commendable so I I would like to see how how we we have a game plan or strategy to go to exemplary if we can I know there's a lot of conditions we went just came out of the you know the pandemic so I I get that but I would like to see some type of game plan to get to exemplary if that's possible yeah I think we look at the dad and see to your question earlier where are we at and then we can strategize from there that'd be great uh 35 homeless kids um help me understand how we accommodate or help support them in terms of education and yeah

025yeah basically we we Supply their needs so all their fees are waived um we do get some monies that come in where we can support for like you know let's be honest things like notebooks pencils pens things that we take for granted they may not have so we try to meet their needs with funds that we get through the state [Music] um so it could be Transportation some sometimes kids are going from shelter to shelter we pick them up and and bring them here so it's into even if a closet too right yes for their um personal needs that's right donations that's right we tweeted what kind of whatever they need and we rally and and get it for them so all right that's great to hear guys yeah thank you yeah just a quick

026comment we'll get you that number kit but if we look at the exemplary school I'll give you a list their demographics don't look like ours just to to give you a hint and I think you understand where I do understand that yeah um yep nope not at all absolutely sometimes you don't achieve your goal but you're always striving towards it and yeah next slide all right strategic plan Updates this is exactly what we're talking about right to have goals uh um John and one of our goals is the building referendum and as well as the Fenton Foundation next slide we're on our home stretch with the building referendum 12 days remaining and we're very excited we feel like we have a good ground game we've got a good email and text game we've got a

027good social media game um but once again wanted to highlight and a good mailing game that that we do have a strong canvassing game uh moving forward so we encourage our viewers to vote early that started on October 24th and we will have a list here or look at our website with those locations one of them being Bensonville police station as an early voting place um Rick I'm going to go ahead and invite you to talk about our building referendum Rick has been really a a Powerhouse in regards to our canvassing as well as our building referendum communication Rick hi uh again just a quick overview we um we want to meet people where they're at and give them reminders so vote early for those who don't uh vote in every election or they're new

028we have a lot of students that have been registered to vote and then give reminders via text the emails the last slide had a reminder it'll be in people's mailboxes on the third of all the locations and the dates and then um catch them at what their interests are so this mailer that you would have gotten today appeals to the economics jobs schools create jobs schools preserve your home value and enhance your home value and then canvassing not everybody can make it to our town hall so everybody has busy schedules so we're taking the show to them about we have anywhere from three to five teams that are going door to door and mostly just saying hey are you aware that this is on the ballots do you have any questions this is these are

029three or four talking points about what is involved and if you don't have any questions early Vote or vote on November 8th at these locations so then we move on just making sure everybody's aware and they have an opportunity to ask whatever questions they may want and then leading up to the actual day we're going to have banners in some strategic locations on campus reminding people to vote on the eighth and um and that it's for us and they they have to contemplate what they view is for our future because they are part of our community so we are finding people where they are and we're trying to catch catch all of their interests and then give them the same consistent messaging so most everything has the same explanations just different taglines to draw men

030thank you Rick thank you I'm sorry question go ahead yep Kerry could you mention that what we talked about a little bit in the finance facility committee about the referendum and and and by the way um when we talk about good to Great this is this is one of the game plans is to have a good to Great School in terms of infrastructure so we just spoke that yeah I was noting or just a conversation came up when our canvassing about the risk for what's in it for homeowners don't have kids in in high school or don't have small kids coming in or you don't fix income or I'm doing all I can do right now the risk is Fenton maintenance and building concerns grows but there's a major issue there's a re and becomes

031a resource concern reality is more of the our funds is going to end up going towards a wave protection from education to fix that and once it starts to roll downhill there's no huge source of pot of money to pull things from and once the school starts to fail it's hard to get it back because it becomes a trickle-down effect what types of family wants to come in School it was a major reason why I moved into this community and certain types of family don't move in you lose small you move you lose businesses you don't have major investments into those communities and not only this is tough for the schools to come back because schools rely upon the housing they rely upon the taxes from the housing in the businesses we're all related and

032we all tied together schools fell it's it's hard to bring a community back in the school district back once you Teeter in that direction it's tough yeah I thought that was a really good perspective turn around so I think the the point too is that once it goes like in a domino effect you can't stop it it's tough it's tough to stop it and then I think John made a good point too with um what was it uh the goal the problem's not going away nope absolutely I mean can't speak to the past but we got to speak to the president what we have now and it isn't that we haven't been maintaining the school we have I feel it is a safe school but there is work that absolutely needs to be done and

033it is not going to go away every year we wait we get less for the dollar and the cost goes up and the list goes up and we're going to do our due diligence and keep the school safe and work on the projects that are necessary but we have to look at the big picture so this isn't going to go away it can't get any smaller than the dollar amount we're asking for we're going to spend our 10 million dollars we're going to do what we can out of our coffers which is your coffers it's our your tax dollars my tax dollars but we we have to do what's right for the school my children will not see this my grandchildren may not see this but as a homeowner it's still the right thing to

034do for the community as a whole and we can't ignore it and it's not going to go away we'll be back I think we're going to pass I have a very good feeling about this one I truly do um you never know but just throwing it out there right now my boat as a member of this board is we move forward again if it doesn't pass it's I know some people say oh it's all mere and dog and pony show and it's not real it's it's real meet with any of our staff let's walk the building we'll show you the real problems that we're working to maintain but you can only put a Band-Aid on for so long and I like the the information here that's being provided that's going out to a lot of

035homes just because it does speak to the economies of schools you know and I think to to both of your point as community members here um when when schools start declining and what I mean by that is we've got great staff we've got great leadership we've got great students a great Community but every you know we know buildings kind of fail sometimes so we're maintaining uh the facilities where we've got the budgets we're fiscally responsible and this is consistent with being fiscally responsible so I I really like this this uh verbiage because it speaks to the truth about what we're all facing here and what we see which is um you know we need to fix our school uh you know there's things that we need to repair but also we're Forward Thinking and saying

036hey we're not just going to fix it we're going to make sure that it's the pride of the community yes so um I I really uh want to just commend everybody for for doing that and uh you know to me it was a pretty simple decision we got to take care of our our own so one of the things that while Carrie and I were out one uh family brought up I just we just don't have the money things are tight you know but it is really a small price to pay if we're because we're in this together as a community We're In It Together and when you break down the numbers it is a small price to pay and I'm not in anyone else's home or pocket it's tight for me too I live

037in the community but in the long run it is the right thing to do in the right time to do it it's not going to get the cost is not going to go down it's only going to increase and so that was one of the that was some of the concern that's what we heard a lot of you know we just don't have the money you know and uh a couple of dollars a day you know if you really think about it and so and and then the pride of um your community and your school um it's important and I'm I'm like I said I'm a real estate agent and so I know uh how important uh schools are to homeowners and and people coming into the community that's the first thing they ask you

038know how are the schools and if the schools aren't good they're they're looking somewhere else and if you're in the community and the schools decline you're looking somewhere else so you know it's just goodbye I mean I've done it before I moved out of the town that I was living in because the schools were in academic warning I wanted a better place for my children so we have to think about that and and like John said my my children won't see it my grandchildren won't see it but I'm willing to sacrifice whatever the cost is because I know that it will be beneficial to all of us in the long run so well and imagine with your own home not making repairs to your own home for years on end yeah and you have one

039issue and if you don't take care of it and that leads to another issue that compounds to another issue and that's kind of what we're dealing with here so it just needs to get done you know and we're dealing with you know obviously a huge building but if you just kind of think about it with your own home and what happens when you don't take care of issues that arise it just kind of snowballs into one issue on top of another issue on top of another issue so it just these things just need to get done yeah but in I've only been on this board for 10 months and going through a lot of meaty minutes and I can say with the board along with the administrators over the last year few years you guys

040have done all you can to maintain and to be responsible with the funds and but also trying to lift the tide academically around and is just simply reached a point where you've done all you can with what you have and on a safety life and safety aspect the condition of the building is simply a threshold is looming out there if we don't address it now there's a cliff and that is it's a tough recovery if we fall off and it ain't a question of I can't handle it it's it's really is how bad is going to get if we don't yeah and I I think of it more romantically so so you know you think of it more dramatically where it's like I I felt I've actually falling in love with this community we moved

041here in from Omaha about nine years ago living in Woodendale and it's it's a night it's a gem we could say it's a nice little gem but every once in a while we need to polish that gem the school is part of that gem so uh thank you guys for making those comments um any other comments guys next slide thank you board I think you hit all the important points there to this important initiative uh next up part of our other strategic plan is our Fenton Foundation real quickly for our viewers defend Foundation um let's initiated uh during our our strategic plan committee it's another we're trying to find other means to generate Revenue we've been working for the last three months to get this going to get it Incorporated and within a couple days

042we will have it Incorporated so it will be ready for business next month uh just real quickly board of directors we have three that will be Bruce Martin kit Ting Paul pong and Leo Figueroa will start off as board of directors their first meeting will be to approve the bylaws which has been created tentatively and needs approval and once again we're very excited we're working with legal in regards to incorporation that should be in effect next in a couple in a couple days here next slide last uh in regards to our informational item here we have received one for you from Cottage Hill operating company basically they wanted to know the invoices and fees in regards to our special ed Transportation as you guys know we're part of the special ed Cooperative called netsec that

043has been resolved by Ned sex so I'm happy to hear about that okay so next is our consent agenda do we have any comments pretty straightforward this time around okay we'll get right to it yep question first time around I just noticed that there's quite a few uh if you can um tuitions um I'm just first time around it is just quite a few if you could just sure because we have a couple tuitions sure and you'll see that like right for example tcd tuition yeah there'll be one special ed tuition whether it's medsec TLC and some of our outplacement and um sometimes outplacement in regards to students with discipline those are as well as some of the tuition so what we have here is you know that edutalk is homeschool Fenton is the home

044school for the majority of its students but we also have serving school that are specialized uh depending on this on the students needs so Bruce any other tuition that that that I miss besides those and the big one I'm not sure TC might have been on here throughout the year the tcd and that's that's a probably one of the bigger as well as the netsec tuition we pay them as well for their students that we actually now so there's [Music] uh that type of thing so and then we do have the application and it's that we send students to as needed typically they're shorter placements but there's a tuition charge for that it could be a private placement oftentimes it is or yeah facility like like that for example and you might it is a

045great question too um and we had that in the passwords on board some of our special ed tuition is steep um the rule of thumb is students with the greatest needs need to the greatest resource and that that reflects the the need of those students anything else guys all right so may I have a motion to approve the consent agenda is presented I'll make that motion thank you John a second I think may have a roll call Regal yes haid yes Louis yes radzinski yes Ting popong yes in motion passed and next we go to committee reports the the Bensenville Community Foundation anything going on there uh the last meeting now is that they um the Bensenville fire department to received some funding for the stop the bleed uh training for the stop the bullied

046um kids so I know we had received some stop to bleed kits right yeah so they received some funding to train um to purchase some um items to train so maybe that could be some kind of collaboration on I don't know if we need training for those but they're they're getting some um like props or whatever to to train unstoppably kids so could collaborate we were looking to the fire department yeah for that thank you anything else so our di committee we should probably get together and talk it over yeah our finance facility we went through that any other updates no I think it was covered very well in the meeting we're in a positive position for the referendum and moving forward with it sounds like we have a plan a a b and a
