001you i would like to call the may 4th 2021 reschedule april regular board meeting of the fenton community high school district 100 regular board meeting to order mary may i have a roll call yes galawick here peyton ho here figueroa here rhaego here ramirez here king paul pong here whitaman here okay we have a quorum please join me in reciting the pledge of allegiance i pledge globe allegiance the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice uh thank you and james please read our fenton mission beliefs and bison way statements sure cultivate successful passionate learners through rigor relevance and relationship successful passionate learners thrive when we champion innovative teaching and engage learning school and home collaborate effectively we provide a safe secure

002and caring environment we infuse social emotional learning into academic and culture diversity empowers our learning community we prepare students to fulfill their civic responsibilities the bison way students and adults at fenton high school create a safe caring empathetic environment when we believe in each other respect diversity communicate openly grow together and hold each other to high expectations to become the leaders and the innovators of the future thank you james uh miri do we have any requests for public statements yes we do we have three this evening okay as a reminder public comments are limited to three minutes per speaker with a limit of 30 minutes per topic first speaker is garrett george topic is music support test test dear board of education administration and members of the public my name is garrett george and i'm

003the director of bands here at fenton high school and a music educator here at fenton since i can remember the fenton school board has proudly supported the fenton music department in a number of ways you have attended concerts marched in parades supported our state out-of-state trips and celebrated our state qualifying ensembles and students several of you have come from the music department itself by being parents of music students which brings me fond memories of your help with uniform fittings serving refreshments at events making ribbons for seniors attending concerts and selling 50 50 raffles at football games just to name a few your support has not gone unnoticed we see you at our events we see you smiling when bands and choirs are performing within the community we hear your voices when you wish our students

004well we also noticed the empowerment you have given our educational leaders to continue this support this has been evident with our diversity in music student programs and the flexibility and scheduling that has allowed the music department to grow robustly over the past five to seven years in a spirit of gratitude the music the fenton music department has made a donation to defend music boosters in each of your names to provide you with a token of our appreciation we hope that you will proudly display our support fenton music students signs in your yards while we're on the topic of gratitude i would like to highlight a few people for whom you have empowered to make a difference in the education of fenton music students the first person is dr jim batson dr batson has gone above

005and beyond to ensure all staff had have the technical equipment to teach to the best of their abilities during this difficult school year additionally jim has taken the time out of his busy schedule to meet with us assess our needs and provide us with the tools to make remote and hybrid teaching as easy as possible jim has not only been a facilitator but a teacher of best practices in using this equipment i have learned more sound engineering and sound reinforcement this year than i have in a lifetime of teaching music jim thank you for being a teacher of teachers and supporting student learning and supporting music the other person i would like to highlight before you is dr eric coranda eric has consistently provided a stabilizing direction for our division and has made the music

006department feel like they were always being heard in this always challenging environment or excuse me changing environment eric has been thoughtful real and honest with us in every capacity i would even go so far as to say that he like any other human during this pandemic was frustrated at times when he wasn't able to provide us with the answers because of the always changing situation while we might not have always liked what we heard eric informed us with fairness empathy and consideration eric has shown us that he is aware of how hard the pandemic has been on music education and how that difficulty while difficult for all uniquely affects music students thank you eric horanda for your for doing a near impossible job in supporting us our music students and music education thank you [Applause]

007[Music] next speaker marshall suba regarding kelk iii math department uh thank you my name is marshall subac i have a daughter that's a junior to soon be senior i want to talk a little bit about the calc iii program at fenton in 1991 the university of michigan basketball team recruited five freshman basketball players and they were called the fab five in fenton has its own fab five they don't play basketball they don't wear baggy shorts and they don't wear black socks but they do math and they do it well we can't call them the fab five because of copyright laws but we can call them the fenton five now the fenton five needs your help as juniors they are completing calc bc and hopefully have a chance to take calc 3 while still a fenton

008student they'll be doing it through the university of illinois program called net math brian augustine the division leader has done a great job getting it set up hopefully the students are going to get scholarships to pay for this if they don't get scholarships the cost is twelve hundred dollars per student i've asked the administration because we were told that the students would have to pay obviously their parents will pay i asked the administration to reconsider that decision and please pay for this if they do not get scholarships again it's 1200 per student and there's five of them the reason i got from the administration is that it wouldn't be fundamentally fair to have fenton pay for class if if the students are going to get college credit the reality is we don't know for sure

009if they're going to get college credit but the other thing that i find ironic is that many of our administrators have an allowance for college credit that we as taxpayers and we always get our tax bills pay for those administrators college credits if we're going to pay for administrators college credits there's no reason not to pay for the fenton 5 cal 3 class at university of illinois which is 1200 per student we have a budget that's about 30 million dollars i'm confident that the board can reconsider us considerate this decision and please have these classes paid for by the board the second issue i want to talk about is related to math i want to make sure the board understands that last week i believe you made a 20 reduction in the math department staffing

010honestly i watched the meeting and i saw some of the i read some of the pamphlets i don't think this board was clear that it was even doing that historically feminists had 10 math teachers in the math department this year you have one teacher retiring and one teacher was not retained both those positions are not going to be filled out of 10 that's a 20 reduction in the math department this year coming off of the pandemic hybrid learning remote learning if anything everybody knows there's going to be gaps and there's going to be gaps in math and i am confident we're not going to have a 20 reduction in students but we're going to have increased class sizes in math in order to handle less teachers if there's any year to keep as many teachers

011in math as possible it's this year to make sure we fill those gaps but ask you please reconsider the 20 reduction in the math department and retain both those positions be filled by math teachers next year thank you [Applause] next speaker patrick escobedo regarding fea and word reelections good evening board of education i come to you tonight on behalf of the fda to thank the outgoing members jackie and marianne for their service and to congratulate newly elected and re-elected members uh to the board the work you do is vitally important for our students and we hope to have a strong working relationship with you going forward during this past year our association has had a very effective collaboration with our administrators i'm really proud of the work we've all done the unprecedented global pandemic has

012required a free exchange of ideas a coordinated response and an ongoing dialogue between our association and our administrators and i'm really proud to say we've accomplished great things we have brought the school we have brought the students in the community through a absolutely trying time so it's our hope that we can extend that dialogue to include the board of education as well moving forward therefore what we are asking is that the board began having quarterly meetings with members of our association with our administration and us as a way to educate yourselves on important issues and potential opportunities that your teachers see on the horizon think of these meetings as a way to share goals to share values and concerns in a spirit of collaboration now i want to be clear we are not asking for

013meetings where decisions will be made or where policy would be set that's the role of the school board meetings that we're at right now rather what we seek is a venue with which we can directly engage and communicate with each other not only is it appropriate for us to have such meetings according to the national association of school boards quote effective school boards have a collaborative relationship with the staff and the community and establish strong communication structures to inform and engage both internal and external stakeholders in setting and achieving district goals additionally the illinois association of school boards lists connecting with its community as number two on its list of six best practices a once a quarter meeting with your teachers to learn about the issues important to them and to express your ideas and

014concerns with them is certainly in keeping with the best practices of the very organizations that are charged with governing the work that you all do given that we work directly with the students whose education you have been elected to safeguard we feel this is the type of meeting which you should be seeking out with us and which we are more than ready to begin having in closing i have to say i have addressed the board since becoming president of our association numerous times and i can tell you with certainly with certainty pardon me that the most upsetting and frustrating part of my work and the most upsetting and frustrating part of my colleagues who have shown up tonight in support is to bring a legitimate concern or idea before the board of education and to

015receive no response from our board i don't mean prepared remarks not referring to being thanked and assured that the board is listening but i mean a real response i'm coming to you tonight with the real idea that your teachers care about please let me finish that we really want to engage with you and i feel you owe it to the work that they do to respond to them we work incredibly hard for our kids i mean people put their hearts into this the work we have done has gotten this school incredible accolades like the ap district of the year which we know the board of education was eager to acknowledge because it's a proud accomplishment but it is hurtful when the board is ready to acknowledge our great success that gets you accolades but not

016to hear our concerns i feel my teachers deserve better so i ask you to end this hurtful past practice and respond to us hopefully in the affirmative and to begin meeting with us and having a dialogue we feel like it's the right thing to do i wish you well in the important work that you're about to engage in and i look forward to hearing from you thank you mary that's all the speakers yes that was it all right thank you uh now we move on to the approval of the march regular board of education meeting minutes we have a motion that the board of education approved the march regular board of education meeting minutes as presented thank you leo thank you mary ann uh roll call please pink no yes jellowick yes figueroa yes rhaego

020great leaders and that all of them will have a great impact on children's lives i want to take a quick moment to thank brian augustine and yeoman for supporting fccla and seeing the opportunities and value it has given to students at fenton high school i can't wait to see in the years to come how fccla will continue to impact students and inspire them to chase their career goals and to make a difference in the world thank you for listening about the achievements of these amazing students and have a great rest of your evening good [Music] that each category the uh there's one individual and one team that gets the most outstanding and elizabeth got the most outstanding in that category throughout the whole state [Applause] as we all know graduation is may 16th but i

021want to take this opportunity in a formal board meeting to recognize the class of 2021. they've been through some challenging times with the global pandemic with hybrid learning with remote learning and now uh really what's the best way for us to salute them in many ways if you've been down 83 you've seen the sign there uh it's just a small token of our gratitude we'll formally congratulate them during uh the graduation on may 16th but i just want to also give a shout out to our principal who loves the class of 2021 joe von lazarevich this was his idea to put it out there for about a month or two what is it a month there just to show the the the fortitude and the commitment we have to all of our students so let's

022give them a round of applause for that [Applause] there you go uh the last recognition goes to our outgoing board okay jackie and marianne um we're going to miss you paul has written something i got something to say afterwards but we'll we'll let the president start it off i would like to recognize our outgoing board members jackie and marianne mariana jackie i would personally like to thank you for your service and dedication to the students of district 100 you have affected positive change on behalf of the students in this district through supporting accomplishments such as ap district of the year facility audit vaccinations yearly balanced budgets fiscal integrity and uh and supporting as well as supporting equity and inclusion programs and policies so that each student has access and can take full advantage of all

023resources the district has to offer this includes supporting and advocating for progressive curriculum and professional development initiatives for the benefit of the students you have made tough decisions with sometimes uncomfortable conversations resulting in what is best for the students of district 100 you each bring your own unique talents perspectives and rationales so we can collectively come to the best decisions for the students jackie and marianne i speak on behalf of the board in thanking you and wishing you the best in your future endeavors you will be sorely missed thank you again would anyone else like to say anything sure i'd like to start off first of all just flat out gracias thank you salamat okay for all the hard work uh being a board member comes in many colors and sizes as you all know

024i think this board really has to be proud of for me in my book two things okay about two years ago we committed to ourselves to equity okay when it was not popular we said we're going to do an equity audit with the regional office of education we'll be the first one in dupage and it sounded new but thank you for supporting us thank you for going through that real hard saying hey look we're going to look at our district we're going to really see how we can live equity and it wasn't very popular we know there's a lot of work but we got dealt in the mix the the district equity leadership team we got dei in place for all of our staff and incoming board member with our new board members there john

025as well as sylvia those are two good things the second part is you walk around the building we know it's a tale of two cities in this building okay you got the the 2014 construction and you got the 1950 building we decided to go with a with a facility audit and say hey look our community deserves better the future generation of fenton students deserve better we need the best classroom from them a 20 21 20 30 20 40 sort of classroom we went through that audit and we're on our way with the next board coming up hopefully to move towards that referendum but i just want to give you guys a shout out for those bold deliberate moves for our district thank you i just want to say it's been great getting to know you

026guys and thanks for all your hard work and dedication thank you yes it's been a pleasure for me so i'll go because you guys know i don't pass up an opportunity so um so we came in together you guys had me in the closed session as you guys went through my interview process and it was um it was great to get to know everybody um so i have two stories the first story is that during closed session jackie marianne and i are not allowed to sit next to each other so that's the first story um the second story is just the support that we've constantly gotten from you guys and i remember we were having a conversation early about a decision-making process and i said absolutely i'll be happy to call you about every decision

027that i have to make from the principal's office and marianne's like oh no no you're not going to do that and then jackie right behind her oh no i'm not then juliet and then it just kind of flowed and i really appreciate that you supported us that you believed in our mission that and i think most importantly you always talk about what's going to be best for kids first and so i really appreciate that from you so thank you very much for that thank you [Music] i would say that um the two of you have been great listeners and very supportive of us and um you know it's not easy to come to these meetings the commitment that you've made and i appreciate you taking your time out and committed to these meetings and other

028meetings as well and i just want to thank you both for being so supportive of us and moving the district forward i guess we're going down the list here michelle started thinking of something in all seriousness you have been very professional board members all throughout and we know when you speak that it's deliberate and uh you've really thought it through and you're trying to do what's best for the district and our students that's in this session it's in closed session and you truly you know you don't have agendas you know you just want to try to do what's best and i think you're a model example for for all board members and and even incoming board members so thank you hey we truly are i gave you guys a tear on the way in we're

029gonna miss you i think that's what it comes down to it's been nice getting to know both of you and um i think patty said that well it's getting to know you and really missing you that i i think is important your commitment to not only fenton but the community i think was really apparent all the work you've done with the service beyond just these meetings we see you everywhere and we we see you often so we'll we'll miss you but hope that you'll stick around and we'll still see you around the building and around the community are we coming back it's been a pleasure working with you and for you both of you enjoy your third wednesdays jackie mariano would you like to see something it has been a very interesting and educational experience

030for me i thoroughly enjoyed it um sometimes on a political level it got a little too heavy for me but um i do believe in the cause i believe in the students i believe in the community and i believe in the administration um i always tried to do the right thing based on what i felt and believed was right i will miss all of you but i may resurface somewhere down the road but thank you it's been wonderful uh it's been a quick four years i learned more than i thought i would ever learn and everyone has the same intention which is what's best for the community and the children in our community and it's apparent every single time we meet um i'm gonna miss all you guys really say levy [Laughter] hey we forgot

031about our non-voting eighth member there jeffrey who shows up security that's right okay let's give him one big round of applause so what we'll do now is gonna adjourn sign die we're gonna give you your gifts we'll probably take two seconds three seconds to just to transition and we'll go from there so paul all right hang on jackie marianne there's one more motion okay okay right may have a motion that the board of education adjourned the retiring board sign died thank you leo thank you juliet uh roll call please peyton hell yes figueroa yes rhaegar yes ramirez yes ping pong pong yes galway now yes all right the motion is thank you passed so much i planted those flowers about a month ago so [Music] um once again i would like to call the may

038an excellent job by the way okay thank you thank you excellent job it's a temporary all right i just want to make sure everyone's on it's temporary you're almost there um next step is the election of the president okay patty's going to facilitate that process let me just go over some items here okay um board president any board member can nominate someone or themselves so james and david wants to be president you could do that okay we're going to ask for how many would how many people would like for president or denomination okay afterwards there will be a vote okay by showing of hands okay does that make sense yeah just like last time all right patty okay um would anyone like to nominate a president for the board of education leo paul wiederman paul

039okay uh i'd like to be nominated for board president kit you're nominating yourself okay anyone else okay um so the candidate receiving the majority of votes cast wins so all in favor of paul for the office of president raise your hand timothy's police note three votes for paul and all in favor um for for a kit raise your hand mrs timmins if you could please note four votes for kit so we have a new president kitten gopal you're the new president of the board please take your name plate we'll do a switcheroo right here okay and next step is you will facilitate what patty was doing to choose the vice president same order then the secretary thanks daddy thanks paul okay thank you [Music] good name [Music] all right okay okay next step would be

041oh please no matter five votes for leo congratulations okay so congratulations to the executive of the new executive board and now we need to fill the board committee appointments starting with the bensonville community foundation we need two positions does anybody uh want to fill that position okay uh miss hade and one more thank you sylvia thank you leo in finance facility sorry yeah uh the second penny would be the finance and facilities committee two positions okay i could do one mr wieman and mr oginski noted uh the next one is the illinois association school boards izb and one delegate i could do that one too thank you paul the next is legislative education network of dupage blend one position for land yes i will okay mr dr basket can i see the next slide we're

042missing one there we go thank you okay and then we got netsack one position one alternate okay thank you leo and then you're the ultimate okay uh policy committee two positions i i could do that yes i'll stand okay and the uh and then the the newly formed the dei committee and eventually soviet okay next we look at information items james sure thank you so much every board meeting we have an equity report because equity is important uh for fenton high school so uh we have dr sam batson i'm sorry benson here uh just kick us off with the student fees and summer in school and summer programming here at fenton sam thank you next slide yeah we'll just wait excellent well okay okay thank you very much uh we want to focus again just

043our our constant look at equity on student fees and ironically this came out through our adult meetings in that you know many times you think of our equity work you think about the human side you think about relationships you think about individuals but there's a whole side to this that became clear to us we need to look at our systems too and our policies and our finances and so that's why that holistic view of equity is really powerful and so one of the areas is the system strand that we're focusing on right now in our equity work and i just took this from our handbook basically this is to ensure a systematic and continuous development toward advancing equity within all policies processes procedures initiatives decision making and fiscal responsibility so again i know that's that's

044a lot to look at but when you you start seeing this through through the equity lens um you know you want to take a look at everything so student fees we want to take a look at tonight we have some recommendations we're not going to act upon them tonight however uh the board meeting may it may the 18th is when we pro we plan on doing that so we took a again a review of all of all fees i'd like to thank our staff because they enlightened us in many ways as far as potential inequities within our system so obviously we work collaboratively on that so we appreciate their input next slide so a couple of points right off the bat we want to mention we want to eliminate course fees so basically what are

045course fees well for certain courses uh there's a fee assessed and like a real simple example is like a foods type class where there's you know edibles and there's a cost involved but it became apparent that that could be a potential barrier for a student to take a class with that extra cost whether it be twenty dollars twenty five dollars they varied across the board and we looked at you know sometimes you sort of inherit a fee structure from the past but that doesn't necessarily make it right so we're to recommend the elimination of all course fees and specialty fees the second area is approximately about a 10 percent reduction in the registration fee for ninth graders we would reduce it to 230. right now i think it's like 256 and then for um 10th

04611th and 12th graders from 220 to 200. so again we also looked at at other other districts in our area and we seem to be on fairly the low end here however we thought with everything that's gone on we should try to reduce that fee plus we've become a little bit more efficient in our registration systems and and don't don't think that that by this savings is going to hurt us fiscally the other area is athletic fees again as we looked at other districts we have a pretty low fee so if you look at first and second sport fifty dollars each but then we thought well what about a family as a father of four boys um you know that can add up that they're they're all in sports at the same time so we

047that's what we looked at is having a cap of of 1 50 per year in case you have multiple athletes in multiple sports so we're going to propose that what what are the fees covered yeah so the registration fee there's a whole process when we register it involves publication of documents sometimes mailings many times we we hire extra clerical and security we we hire people to hand out books to collect books and hand them out so in theory that's that's sort of what drives the the registration fee is that that extra cost to register registered students okay next slide i i should pause any other questions related to that or just wanted to remind the board we will have a formal uh recommendation at the may 19th meeting as well as the finance committee meeting

048prior to that meeting so we could dive further in that but any questions would would do but so this gives you a chance to think about it next meeting you could ask the question as well by the way thank you from dun tanker family with six kids that family cat is helpful right you would have hit that cap i think at some point okay so summer programming first off it's full in person this summer secondly we are offering many free summer school and summer programming options i will repeat they are free not every single one but the majority of them and uh actually pedro castro is here too who's leading our summer school programs we appreciate him being here this evening so i i just kind of grouped in where we have more summer offerings

049than ever and it kind of makes sense because obviously you know going through the pandemic things like learning laws some students will need to recover a credit and so these are all things that we focused on every summer but we have expanded offerings this summer that we're excited about and like i said we're excited to be fully in person this summer so just some examples credit recovery options we have online and and some other options depending on the course and and the the discipline that the student is is pursuing accelerated geometry this is uh we're working on making sure all of our students coming from the center districts have that opportunity to see accelerated geometry right now it's a little bit uneven depending on where you're coming from typically we have charged for this course

050in the past but we don't want to we see it as an equity issue uh if a student again is is is really doing well in math and wants that opportunity we don't want the cost to be a barrier some other areas math and english extension literacy and math skills so these are incoming freshmen who maybe a little bit below grade level need some support the summer program is there for them to get them up to speed so they can hit the ground running freshman year we have a variety of esl programming fundamentals of of algebra and then we also are excited about some stem opportunities aws cloud explorer patch um eight referring to amazon so we're we're starting that this summer also as far as other programming we do have some what we sort

051of get ahead courses so if a student wants to take health in the summer they can to provide extra flexibility during the school year um in the past it's been 150 dollars we decided to cut that in half we figured we would still collect a fee because you know these are not you don't have to take a court these courses in the summer but we also want to be sensitive to the pandemic has really had hit parents in a variety of ways so these courses and of course they would be uh there's there they can be waived and be uh for free for free reduced lunch situations here for the summer so that's consumer ed driver's education and health and i should add that that there is a a portal we have a a very

052nice summer school program guide that pedro will put together and parents can sign up online any questions just want to reiterate to the board that this summer school summer program will be in person we'll feed our students here give them breakfast and lunch to try to basically i'll jump the gun here because false start we're planning of a pre-pandemic start our traditional start so this is like to get the ball rolling okay if the current situation in regards to the metrics in regards to safety continues as this the pandemic has really hurt learning it doesn't mean her her learning did it stopped fitness always had learning continuous whether it's pandemic or not here okay she just wanted to reiterate that but we made it a point using esser funding that we received from the government

053which we'll talk about here in a minute to to really offer a robust okay summer programming for our students who need it okay who needs that extra help who needs that extra class okay who needs to retake that class and we want the finances to be out the door okay hey look come in here it's free which sam has has provided and however the other three classes that he put up there there's a minimal payment there so that's the plan for this summer just wanted to reiterate thanks sam thank you next up is equity report yeah is papa nikolao can you hear me okay and just a note on um the summer learning and this this concept of unfinished learning i think it's really important there's some academic skills we're concerned about but our students

054have learned skills for a lifetime during this that they probably could have never learned in any other scenario so i think it's really important that we commend our students for the type of skills they've developed over this time they've showed perseverance and persistence and grit and any other kind of life skill you can think about and i'm proud of them and i just want to say that because we keep focusing on learning loss because we're we're supposed to um based on esser funds and this and that and everything else that that's being provided within our systems but i just wanted to add that in there yes in reference to summer school how many have we gotten students already signed up for summer school we started that process sylvia um there are some people uh uh

055who signed up already as once again uh um mr castro is our summer school principal he's doing a diligent job we're doing a blitz out there in the community whether it's email whether it's phone call whether it's padres unidos some of the out parent outreach program yes we've started um with that process summer school starts in june so we got a couple more weeks to hit that uh to get that out in the community get folks enroll and to really encourage our families to take advantage of this opportunity because it is an opportunity to take thank you thank you of course okay so diversity equity and inclusion training since january we've been at this with our staff both our certified staff and support staff that have direct contact with our students on a daily basis

056we've held five of our six hour long trainings so we've had five hours of training so far with one more to go we've covered topics like understanding implicit bias social constructs of self positionality and spheres of influence stereotype threat coded racial language by bystanders and bystander and upstanders is our next topic in our last topic so we we've been grateful for our partnership with dr yvette dubial she's quite an expert and she's really laid a nice foundation for us as a school to have some common language about this work something to note about the diversity equity and inclusion training is it takes courageous and sometimes uncomfortable conversations and our staff has embraced this challenge and we're grateful our training will continue per the equity action plan um it's currently being developed by delt as dr

057benson referred to by our our district equity leadership team so although this is a foundation next layers of this work will continue fantastic and then when is dr dublin going to come and talk to the board and yeah we're going to talk about the the um the diversity and equity leadership team so that team has been meeting now um since january as well and actually well before that because they started our equity audit last year and we have been working this past spring for two hours two and a half hours at a time and we've met five times now and we are developing our equity action plan for next school year 2021-2022 we're focusing on five strands systems teaching and learning professional development community and family as agency and student voice and culture we're in

058the process of finalizing this plan and rehearsing for when we come and present to you in june so we have on the docket for june a presentation of the full equity action plan that we plan to implement next year this plan is very critical to ensure that we see all of our decisions through with a lens of equity it's helping us move in that direction we're getting better at that and this plan will ensure that we continue to grow in that area so we look forward to presenting we will have members of all the members of the team we hope will join us but we will have members of each strand presenting to you on june 23 21st 21st so any questions about dei or our equity action plan it's a real quick board we

059got an audit okay we had an audit we came up with what the audit found okay strength weaknesses and opportunities we had some objectives now we've got to say what are we going to do about some of those opportunities okay that's where the action plan comes in okay there were five strands there so we'll share that with dr dubiel being there and the strand leaders there so just wanted to give you a big picture so there was an assessment we reviewed the assessment we analyzed the assessment what are you going to do about it and how are you going to measure it okay so we we we're serious about this and i can't wait for that meeting to start and get it moving on some of the action plans next up real quick is uh

060school schedule updates so one thing is for sure i said it already summer school is in person uh we want to get that we don't want to put that demarcation line hey look we're all in we plan to be all in in the fall but once again we don't know where the pandemic is going right even though we know people are getting vaccinated we know that a couple weeks ago it was at 3 000 uh uh cases there so but that is our plan we're planning for that our traditional eight period days five days a week uh we're going to continue to follow the cdc idph dcph and is weak guidelines as well as the governor it would be so much easier if the governor says you know what everyone in can't wait that but

061we we gotta wait okay next up too is uh something changed um just wanted to brief the board on that we're gonna move um our are a late start to monday okay we used to have early release on tuesday okay we would like to do what's what's good for our staff and our students uh in regards to having a late start so we can do our plc some professional development monday morning okay and the time for that uh principal is there rich it'll start at eight o'clock uh well i'm sorry for the students the classes start at ten o'clock so it'll be our big thing so so sleep in for the students every monday ten o'clock now give me some history okay late starts on tuesday kids get to go home at two o'clock early

062release we worked real hard with district two district seven hey look can we collaborate because they had uh early release as well we tried that for three years okay we tried that for three years it kind of splintered they want to do their thing okay both district two and district seven okay we we say hey look what else can we do that's where it is right now so pull back take a look at it okay they're doing their thing they're doing what's good for their students and their communities we gotta also do what's good for us in our communities what's best for our communities is that time give our kids more rest on that monday because we've seen research that says hey look kids do better when they start a little bit later okay and

063it gives our our staff a chance to meet first thing monday morning to to to meet with their plc and to plan get some professional development michelle am i missing anything on that okay and plus on tuesdays our students don't have to leave the building now so when we had early release they would have to leave the building and then come back for athletics and activities this way they're just here for the entire day as they get here so there's um so that gives that advantage on a tuesday now too so they can just come in on monday so they just release at 3 15 every day okay so those are our planning okay it's the plan right now we'll see and we'll continue to brief the board as well as the community with our

064weekly newsletter moving on to the next one esther grant you're going to hear this a lot board i've been telling you about this expert here bruce is going to talk about it a little bit but it's very exciting news here with esser grants i i i don't oversell it too much but anyhow uh yeah you've heard that a lot um probably in the media perhaps other parents and so on but esser it's kind of a long-winded you know description elementary and secondary school relief fund we just wanted to give you a brief overview tonight we'll go into more detail next board meeting at our facility finance meeting but we just want to kind of uh give you a general understanding of what this all includes and what we're um expecting to get from from the

065grants so there's three separate awards provided under esser uh esther one is the cares act and that began last march right when the school kind of shut down march of 20 2013 of 2020. we're receiving those funds already um and we've been utilizing those funds and we'll get into what we're using those funds for in just a moment esther ii we're in the process of submitting that grant we hope to have that done by the end of this month and that's a little bit bigger allocation and then uh s or f i'm not exactly sure what the f is but it's the american recovery program i think you may have heard that that might be better known by that description but each award is tracked separately um those are the time periods of when they

066run so there is a finite amount of time they'll run which you would kind of expect when the federal government's rolling out uh grants of this nature so the cares act includes uh allowable uses of funds to prevent prepare for and respond to coven 19 that's a pretty broad description um the allocation of funds is is based on uh your title one allocation so that's kind of the driver there of how they arrive at these uh amounts that we're uh projected to receive and all those have been provided to you to us by the illinois state board of education so the aster one allocation um the 186 thousand dollars is we haven't received all that because it's it's a reimbursement so as the expenses occur we submit expenditure reports and then get reimbursement for those

067things so we've used that for staff development and a lot of this was done last year preparing for remote learning this past school year so last spring we used these funds towards a lot of staff development and training as i said to support remote learning ppe supplies personal protective equipment supplies to keep our building safe and clean cleaning supplies and equipment so some cleaning machines and fogging machines and things like that we've purchased all allowable expenses under this grant miscellaneous equipment and supplies um a lot of that is technology kind of falls into that bucket um and then we've budgeted uh the majority of those funds in this fiscal year so that's that's where that activity is happening and then esther too the allocation is about 730 000 so a significant more amount of money

068um the grant as i said we'd like to our plan is to submit that this month when you do submit it you have to write for the entire amount so it's um you can amend that future but you know you have to write it for the entire amount but some of the things that we're still vetting some of these things but we've been meeting weekly as a team to discuss how we the best way we believe we should spend the funds um learning loss supports upgrading projects to improve air quality we'll ask the board to ask on something later this evening to address that issue with our ionizers staff supports and student supports students desks and chairs to support social distancing technology needs and as i said those scopes of the projects are still being

069vetted and those funds will be um budgeted next year so our fiscal year begins july 1st so that's when we'll start budgeting and expanding those funds uh for next year and then finally esther um the american recovery program about 1.6 million dollars a pretty significant amount of money 20 and this is different than the other two there's a reserve they refer to it as there's no reserve in the first two but 20 percent must be utilized for learning loss to the implementation of evidence-based interventions so um the potential initiatives summer learning enrichment extended day after school programs sel social emotional learning classroom furniture again to support social distancing probably looking at some lunchroom furniture as well and then further improvements in air quality that grant is not available yet it's expected to be released july

0701st we'll write for it at that point in time we've already been kind of preliminary planning for that but those funds won't be budgeted until next year and probably into the following fiscal year as well and these funds are available to spend through uh 2024 so basically a three-year window to utilize those funds so we're it's a it's a lot of a lot of collaboration a lot of planning a lot of tracking of the funds their federal funds they're they're going to expect that we we will track those separately as as we are required to do um and you'll be seeing that in our budget as we talk more about the budget and then get that uh earmarked um for for next year so that's kind of where we're at with esser funds uh as

071of uh this moment in time any questions on on that at this point well you think of your question just real quickly the administration's meeting every thursday to look at these fundings to make sure we have a game plan it's just a chip at it just meet me what does sr3 mean what does sr2 mean and what does sr1 mean once again we're going to dive fully into it at our finance committee meeting may 19th uh we'll have further we'll show you our whole entire grid exactly what we're planning to do uh at that time questions all right next slide just real quick we do this every board meeting uh we want to get away from being substantial we need to move on to be there in medial but if you look at the arrows

072uh the third column there all the errors are pointing at the right direction and it looks like everything is minimal uh pretty much we have four minimals one moderate and one substantial that that number of 100 000 is really hard to get you need less than per 100 000 to get that to change colors to moderate we continually uh watch that that's where we're at as a due page next slide real quick next slide real here is basically the dupage number as well we see the trend there you can see from left to right we had a peak the middle but it seemed like it's it dipped and maybe there's a little rise there but from the peak there's a significant difference there so we could i think we could all agree the trend is

073down especially with some vaccination i'm keeping my fingers cl uh crossed uh in regards to that uh that's what that slide says next slide here same thing here in regards to let's see what that is jim can you read that that's kind of small what does it say on the top percent positivity so the positivity rate as you know one time it was uh ridiculously at 17 19 percent um i think it's uh at 4.3 percent uh currently so we want that to continue to go down but i think we could all agree the trend in general is downwards in positivity rate uh just real quick from the cdc uh in the united states 147.5 million people have received at least one dose of any vaccine that's your orange here the purple right here is

074people fully vaccinated at 8.4 people fully vaccinated within two doses which includes fenton and staff at 97.1 million and all of the united states is about 360 million in the united states i believe uh roughly 105 have been fully vaccinated so um we're watching that as well real quick this slide here might as well dupage number two in the state in regards to county that has vaccinated its uh population population for a dupage is 928 000 they have vaccinated fully vaccinated the individual 338 000 um individuals that's about 36 percent okay we lead uh uh the vaccination in regards to lake county cook county the big counties i think there's a little kind of thing is kindle that just beats us uh by a percentage point but shout out to dupage and the dupage county

075public health for doing a great job working with schools working with hospitals working with churches mosques uh to get its individuals vaccinated as you know we had three vaccination efforts here at fenton we have vaccinated about six thousand four four thank you 6500 rick uh individuals so we're getting close to fifteen thousand doses uh uh administered here at fenton that's huge we lead the dupage schools in this uh very proud of that as well okay next vaccination is this friday uh board if you would like to help paul thank you for always assisting us with that one we plan to administer thirteen hundred doses a huge shout out to our partners first administrators sami jovan bruce constantly there michelle our staff security uh assisting with us with that you shout out to saint monicas okay

076uh helping us to re uh reach our brown population our latin latinx population you shout out there as well as sylvia acuna if you haven't known silva yet sylvia wherever you are shout out to you with patrice nidos pedro uh that's that's uh his his biggest advocate there you shall she brings in hundreds of of individuals she'll make those calls and so forth as well as the taxing bodies we couldn't have do done this without our taxing buddies right our village of bensonville the park district the library the police department we continue to work um with those individuals and we're actually very very good if you talk to jewel oscar pharmacy they love coming to fenton because we make it easier for them we're prepared we're organized and we're professional next slide senior chromebook i'm

077going to pass this on to bruce all right sure um the chromebooks um first of all uh i think you're all aware that each student at fenton high school has issued a chromebook upon entering the high school in their freshman year and they keep that for all four years um so this we're in our finishing our fourth year of that program prior to buying and each class a uh chromebook we leased them and so there we you know they were on a i think a multi-year lease this was going back about five years or so we we kind of re evaluated that and thought you know the best way really for us to do it and to buy a better device would be to buy a class round of chromebooks each year and phase those

078in um so obviously the first uh year we started phasing it in we had seniors um who were issued an uh you know chromebook at the end of the year we took those back and then we redeployed some of them as loners and then or we traded them into a company that buys them back uh in that business these seniors hold the distinction of having those devices for four years so they've had them for four years we've already went to our vendor to get price value on them they range anywhere from fifteen to thirty dollars is the estimation on the cost of the devices we're suggesting recommending um that the um we actually allow the students to purchase them if they'd like for twenty dollars they can turn them in if they don't want the

079devices we'll take them back and then we will recycle recycle them accordingly but we're recommending um to allow students um to have the option to purchase them if they so choose the senior class i should say and emphasize that um so that that's kind of our recommendation um and that's kind of where we're at right now we'll bring a formal recommendation to the board next uh later this month i guess may 19th um any questions on the whole chromebook issuance and for the seniors this is great for or some of our seniors who's going on to college and they might not have a device uh to take it with them so okay thanks bruce next slide floss and seiu as you know we have two three association here at fenton um uh we reach a

080tentative agreement with floss and would like to start negotiating with seiu we'll discuss that in closed session and further next slide finance facility committee friendly reminder we hit it three or four times already at this meeting uh our next finance uh meeting which is critical we're gonna talk about esther we're gonna talk about chromebooks and really dive into what we're going to utilize this 1.6 million dollars that's going to be open to to to our families our facilities to our staff and so forth and may 19th it starts at 6 00 p.m would love all board members to be there so we could do this collectively next slide receive two foias requests smart procurement vendor requests they send us quarterly and the sheet metal worker local smart 265 wanted to know basically all the construction

081jobs that has taken place we have not done any construction jobs lately so mrs timmins has done a great job uh resolving those foias and will continue to bring foyus uh to the board as it comes next slide important days for the board senior awards night may 12th principal lazarovich let me know if i get the dates wrong senior brunch tentatively may 13th graduation may 16th we would like the board to be here at what time 10 30 to start 9 45 board finance committee 6 pm in person may 19th board meeting may 19th the regular board meeting last day of school is may 20th dei training for the board is may 22nd for the first batch sylvie and john i sent you an email for the second batch of dei training i believe it's

082in june not june 27th sylvia i know that's important to you so it's there please look at your email we want all the board members to attend and i think everyone has attended or is currently attending so we could do that as a district that would be great am i missing anything there you're mine other than uh correct very good next slide consent again okay uh so do we have any questions on uh on on these comments regarding the consent agenda yeah i do um just a quick question bruce who like the p cards tell me again about the p cards and like does everybody have a card and do they have a certain budget or is it just um not everyone has a card typically supervisors are the ones who are issued cards okay

083so division leaders principals um those types of folks in that supervisory capacity so they're the expectation is that they all they have budgets within their departments that they um utilize and state are expected to stay within those budgets and that's where those purchases um are applied to those account numbers and their budgets throughout the school year okay are they encouraged or do are they required to like seek out like several sources to get the best price on things because there was yeah yeah um arrangements made with multiple vendors for example office supplies we have three or four different uh vendors that we have bid pricing with contract pricing um so yes they're expected to um you know compare pricing and then place an order accordingly um a lot of times you know the cards are

084used for um attending workshops and things like that that oftentimes need you in the old days you used to be able to issue a po nowadays everybody wants immediate payment or a credit card so that a lot of those travel types of activities are what the cards are used for as well but um the other thing i will say some of our vendors or actually actually i should take all of our online vendors where they buy products from um the orders then come to the business office before they're released so we are able to review them before they're uh released to go to the veterinary division for approval yeah okay thanks any other questions yeah i do on the personnel report so and i i decided to hold off i mean these this isn't putting

085anybody on the spot i just think it's good just general information for everybody um so what's the difference between a substitute and a daily substitute thank you mr lazarus daily sub is someone that we employ every day to be here to be a substitute teacher so the rate's a little bit higher than a daily then then a substitute which is basically someone that's on call and then they come into sub only on particular days so what if your daily substitute shows up and you don't need them uh that hasn't happened yet that i'm aware of there's always some sort of a need for them yeah and we we have two of them so in this case we we had a daily sub who left for another full-time employment become a teacher somewhere so with that

086resignation we were able to fill it with someone uh that was already acting as a sub for us right okay and what's an instructional coach i'm going to refer to michelle on that one that's a contractual position within our you can't hear okay that's a position within our contract with the fda we have seven instructional coaches they are provided a stipend every year that they serve they do duties such as training other staff members coaching staff members through their evaluation process [Music] supporting scl needs of students through the professional development of the teachers so any any of our professional development they're leading they're helping to lead so they're so it's professional development they're getting peers in their professional development right correct i was thinking it was like a tutor so i never know all right

087yeah um and our social worker internships paid internships yes they are they are yeah they're paid okay you know that thanks daddy i've got a question on the um the chromebooks uh so when when you when we recycle those chromebooks where do they go you know all the all these schools that are doing chromebooks after we're done with them you know i don't know exactly what the vendor does but i believe they recycle them or probably resell them a lot of them as well okay i'm gonna keep going so the student conduct what is the what were the changes that were made sure got it right here three major changes um and silva you were part of that committee as a parent yeah uh changed all pronouns from him her to they them updated academic

088dishonesty policy to reflect the students no longer receive a zero on assignment involving academic dishonesty lastly added a section detailing harassment and unacceptable behavior regarding teen dating as required by illinois principal association model handbook so you changed pronouns we change pronouns yes and they don't no longer get a zero data correct they don't get no longer receive a zero on assignments involving academic dishonesty we feel that there being there's a consequence for the dishonesty as well why do we have to give them an academic consequence as well that makes sense no no actually let me explain it this way so okay go ahead michelle uh you want to go and then i'll show you yeah sure as as we start to look at grading and equitable practices within grading it's really important that we consider

089the achievement of the actual competency skills and standards and what the grade represents too often we've taken students dispositions behaviors lack of supports at home and used academic grades as punishment in that and we have to be very careful of those practices and really ensure that our grades have meaning and that they have meaning in what the students are actually learning academically okay and not behaviorally so you're saying that what there's what's going on at home the the grade that's given is a punishment for what's going on at home no did you say that to make it equitable at all parts what what you see in the student handbook is not consistent with our practice in the building um we don't do zeros we do 40 we do a minimum grading scale so that's so

090the student will still receive a 40. we're not we're not going to say hey you cheated and i'm going to give you your cheating grade right like this so the student would just get a 40. so basically what happens in that student handbook we've just taken the zero out because it's misleading we don't use that number anymore or none math teachers what am i what's the zero i i forgot it what do we call the zero it's just zero right but they would still get the 40 they could afford it because they haven't shown mastery of the concepts right okay so it's not a the equitable part is a completely different conversation but what you're asked about in terms of the student handbook it doesn't fit with what we're doing procedurally got it okay so

091if they cheat they're still getting 40. yes that's no evidence okay no evidence i still don't understand these grading systems we'll have that conversation at another time absolutely so it's forty percent of a hundred or it's a they're still getting five percent of a hundred so they cheated and they're still getting a grade that builds towards their average even though they did something wrong there's not towards their average again john we can have this conversation that completely i think we're gonna need because i think it's oh absolutely i'm happy to talk about grading directly actually jill feldman it's a great book for you to take a look at a few chances but that that's where we're going with that yeah we're going to be reading that book as a staff i think it'd be a

092really helpful book for anybody involved in their decisions moving forward the entire staff is going to be reading it next year so it's called grading for equity by joe feldman it's really a really important um piece of educational literature that we need to explore and and learn from um so that's something that we're all going to be doing here was a short time to address address that handbook um we had like a short time i i felt like we didn't have enough time to really just go through it and make the changes necessary so i i think it should be readdress and we did discuss that um another question on the conduct um so students and i might have read it wrong but students who are on in-school suspension are still allowed to participate in

093after school activities is that correct did i read that right i don't i don't believe so i think that's that's um because if that's the case then i can't approve this oh i don't think so i'll find it suspended or suspended from activities as well so if you could find that there's an error there mr castro says you're in the plus does that ring a bow in school suspension did they get to participate in extracurricular but is that deriving from the code of conduct revision or is this i yeah i don't believe so that's not about the student revisions it was towards it was so what we could do is we could clarify that moving forward if it's not not necessarily revision then it's a current handbook policy it's already in place how about one

094page of the 14-page document i found that it does say that they are not eligible to participate on the day of end school suspension okay thank you i did read that wrong right no it's deceiving because it says they can have early releases for athletics or other activities but then it also says are ineligible on days of right in school very good okay thanks john good yes thank you would be helpful if the changes are highlighted in the future when we're given a sheet yeah so we know what the changes were to address them especially as a new person it was great to read the whole thing but i had no clue what was changed even as old persons i mean older i mean experience experience thank you veteran okay any more questions questions okay

095so we may have a motion to approve the consent agenda as president presented so moved on second thank you juliet thank you paul can you move your um mic a little closer to you i can't yeah you need to speak up you're you have such a soft voice anyway and then the mask is not helping yeah okay here we go check check is that good good wake up okay let's do this um uh so they have a motion uh a second uh roll call please weedman yes haid yes redzinski yes galiwick yes figueroa yes regal yes ping po pong yes okay motion passed mr president and the board i just wanted to recognize a visitor here who came today uh uh our new assistant superintendent of human resource and operation mr terrell yarbrough who's over

096there would like to stand up uh would you like to say uh anything to the public and the board yeah very welcome too um well okay is this okay no first of all i just i just i just want to thank um you know that the administration um board members um you know staff that's here today um students reflect student as well i'm just for the opportunity to serve this is for me very exciting to be here um i i visited fenton a couple of times with with our equity team and came away impressed um for the it seemed from the the staff at fitton for their passion for kids um and their passion for for finn high school i'm just on the drive back on a drive back to mcchesney park where i'm currently

097principal of harlem high school just came away just blown blown away with with just the the passion that that was here so i'm very happy to be joining the team hopefully that goes through um and just excited to to get to work and and get to know you all so so thank you i appreciate it [Music] [Applause] now we have discussion items in action items 2021-2022 board of education meeting calendar just real quick please board we do this every election year um and it's really up to you it's your calendar uh it's your day to meet as a board or two we're going to choose when would you like to meet right now traditionally it's the third wednesday of the month um and it's once a week starts at 7 00 p.m this is the

098chance to change that or to keep it um feedback from from the administration and some board members uh we tried this year we did the third week of each month sometimes it just didn't work out we had to reschedule there was some talk that hey look could we put it back to the fourth uh fourth uh uh week of the month the fourth wednesday so that's really up to you what we need to do uh is to agree on a date per month uh in regards to your board meeting and what time so that's where we're at so if you would like to have a dialogue right now i propose we'd move it to the fourth wednesday of every month uh 7 p.m i vote for the third wednesday what time seven seven just fyi

099if you work until 5 30 5 45 and you commute uh we don't recommend a six o'clock start we've seen that folks are coming late even the 6 30 is pretty tough part of the reason we moved it to seven a couple years ago was we had a board member that gets off of work at 5 30. so just keep that in mind uh uh the commute there's only 12 board meetings a year we would like for each one of you to be here in those all 12 yeah what was the justification for a third wednesday before i didn't hear you what was the justification before for the third why did we go to the third i think that because there were conflicts um a lot of conflicts in the school calendar okay um so

100we had we had gone that's why but it turned out that the third week turned out to be problematic this year i mean we had to do quite a few changes um holidays there were some holidays martin luther king i believe is one of them is that that's a matter of third week yeah but i i just recall that we had there were a few changes we had to do and previous years when we had it and the fourth week that seemed to go smoother and it was easier to remember another another question i have is um in terms of the the board agenda you know when we get it it's usually the the friday uh right before the the meeting so we give us about the weekend and a couple days is and i

101know we've revisited that before but is there any chance we can go to maybe like a week before we could discuss that for what okay right my apologies um my question was could could we consider the board agenda when we get it you know maybe a week before instead of the friday before that would be a question for people putting it together right right i think what we got right now with the agenda right here i think we could discuss that um but let's take care of what's on the agenda item right here which is to choose your date your date for the meeting is it i we i'm hearing i'm just echoing what you're saying um either the third or the fourth seven p.m wednesday yeah that's just my my preference so yeah so

102we run into interference with thanksgiving and christmas and people who want to travel during the holidays with the fourth so i mean i'm in different wednesday works for me third or fourth i'd lean towards the third if we need to do a vote let's do a vote let's just do this show of hands make it real easy okay fourth wednesday of the month just raise your hand okay we got paul okay third pretty much everybody else so i think it's and you guys don't care leo can't you know third or fourth is fine with me he said he's calling it out so it looks like the third seven p.m the samples that you have in front of you are the fourth yeah so i will i will redo it for the next meeting well these

103are for the four yes yes december 15th is actually the third yep so it's the second it was november 17th yep the uh holidays actually so they were moving yeah [Music] so these are except for those holiday ones these are the so it's four weeks except for that except for the holidays i'm indifferent i mean but however for consistency if we stay the third we don't have to jump around the holidays and it's always the third you can set a recurring event yeah i mean i think i think that is a good point butting up the holidays um that makes sense to me too as presented may i have the motion that the board of education approved the 2021 board of education meeting calendar as presented i thought we were changing it to the third

104as presented as amended yes not as presented okay correction i'll make the motion as amended to the third wednesday and i'll second it okay roll call please weedman yes redzinski yes galway yes figueroa yes rhaego yes yes yes uh i'm sorry um oh yes yes motion passed okay uh 2021-2022 school treasure appointment for uh mr bruce martin yes thank you um uh the uh annual action item per the board policy is to appoint a treasurer of the school board for the upcoming fiscal year beginning on july 1st it has been past practice to appoint the chief school business officer as the treasurer if the board is agreeable to do that they would need to take action and appoint myself in that role for next year may have emotion that the board of education approved the

105resolution appointing school treasurer as uh mr martin as presented so moved second uh roll call please weedman yes jellywood yes figueroa yes rhaego yes redzinski yes kade yes tinkpophome yes and uh motion passed okay okay and and now we're going to discuss the ionization mechanical equipment bid with with bruce please sir thank you um this is i kind of mentioned this earlier with esther funds would support uh and fund this uh bid the ionization of the existing mechanicals within the school district the goal would be to really improve air flow quality um throughout the building for a cleaner environment um we did receive seven bid proposals we worked with our architect on this and our engineer as well for this project we were fortunate to have a lot of participation in response str our architects

106are recommending the low bid they've been vetted they've worked with them before they find them to be an acceptable contractor and that is quality mechanical and as i mentioned this project would be funded with federal funds through a grant referred to as the sr funds emergency and secondary school relief school emergency relief funds we've got the bid results in there attached for your review but we do ask for the board to approve this tonight so we can get this work scheduled for this summer um and i the only other thing i guess i'll say regarding the ionizers because their mechanical equipment is older if if or when it is replaced the ionizers can be transferred to another unit so they um will be utilized uh whether in the existing equipment or new equipment going forward

107so um we did clarify that and confirm that with our contractor um and our architect as well so it's not something that's gonna over tax the what we have already the system we already have in place no and it'll just enhance what we have now and and improve the air quality uh throughout the building okay how the stable will be completed before the school year starts yes yes and no interference to summer school uh we'll work around that workaround very good so it's a standalone unit that we can transfer if we upgrade the system throughout the building yes very good thank you sure what's the what's the maintenance cost on continual maintenance i think we can handle all that internally is what we're told so yeah oh perfect uh and then um as far as

108you know obviously the the viral viral uh capacity of it yeah they gave you some statistics to share um the filter only system which is what we have now and and it captures about uh 11 of pathogens within our particles within the air with this system it'll capture up to 84 of particles within the air so um and that's if we if we get a more uh ionization of a filter that is even greater than what we're currently using that would just increase even more with the filter plus the ionization are we using hepa filters um i i don't know off hand you know i don't i don't think we are at the currently we upgraded our merv rating on it depends on the system but we have upgraded our filters a couple more things

109um longevity-wise you know what's typically the life expectancy they haven't said but we're expecting it to a minimum of 10 years [Music] any other questions guys okay and so may i have a motion that the board of education approved the low bid from quality mechanical incorporated that includes the base bid of 107 720 for the ionization of existing mechanical equipment can you repeat that i can't hear you yeah you know what before you do whatever you do um how how much have we used uh with the the um as our one um we have about seventy thousand dollars left of that one okay so this would go into esther two or as or two that's the plan yes okay okay okay thank you uh may have a motion that the board of education approved the

110low bid from quality mechanical incorporated that includes the base bid of 107 720 for the ionization of existing mechanical equipment i'll make that motion i'll second it okay roll call please yes figure out yes regal yes brzezinski yes yes yes yes motion passed now we have committee reports starting with the bensonville community foundation i i can take that if you want okay i have some suffering evil we have the giving uh dupage days which ran online from april 26 through the 30th and it raised 150 for the foundation and 389 thousand dollars for a hundred and two due page non-profit organizations well which is pretty incredible um yeah pretty pretty cool and then the subaru share the love initiative which um was a program that uh subaru subaru has where they when you buy a

111subaru you get to donate on behalf of subaru to one of several um charities bensonville community foundation was presented a check for sixty six thousand one hundred and seventeen dollars wow um and this is going to help the foundation to continue to give grants and serve our community you know significantly um and then finally the foundation also gave a check dependent to cover the cost of ap testing for all students who could not afford to do so i don't recall the amount though approximately twenty five hundred dollars so thank you thank you for that julian yeah and i just wanted to thank james for being a spokesperson at the at the meeting too uh so he was integral and talking to the the bensteel foundation i just wanted to acknowledge james for coming out there

113this this year myself in sylvia all right yes okay okay great yeah and i would be remiss to not mention also again grand subaru for the the very generous donation to the community so granted subaru bensonville was really very generous and it will continue to again this year will be one of their um charities again that they'll have for the individuals to choose from so cool um just going back on the the introduction uh comments um i i heard the defendant five and you know with these funds uh it might be a good idea to um you know approach the benchvue foundation to see if we can approve a grant for the fenton five by the way just something to keep in mind so because we've got these funds and you know any anyone that

114would like to apply for a grant just go on the bensonville foundation website to do that um can just for a clarification when did they find out about scholarships [Music] no no [Music] before they did the application but he's gonna apologize to do the applications first that's right we're gonna have to move along here so thank you we'll get back to you there um the finance committee please uh we have a finance facilities committee meeting next board meeting at 6 p.m on the 19th so that'll be the next meeting and the sbe report um the iasp delegate is um i will be meeting with the dupage division of the iasb executive committee on june 17th to work on the fall dupage division meeting and the arrangements and the speakers thank you paul and the lend

115report okay we got our meeting back on april 12th and uh since it was the first meeting actually over the year uh we got a lot of items to cover and mr antenco is the president and one of the biggest items was to changing the precedence so there is a lot of new members and it's going to be switch over i believe mr antenna is going to continue there and myself going to be there too mr leo figaro will remain uh chair and i step down because my year is up so uh dr langston from district 4 is going to do that one so i i can't collaborate with you anymore leo but we we had a good time running uh ned sack together so thank you thank you the last is the policy committee

116report we didn't have meetings so no report so the next board meeting is wednesday may 19th at seven and the finance facilities committee meeting will take place prior to the the board meeting at 6. and so i may have a motion and a second to go into closed session for the purpose of this appointment for the appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity however a meeting is consider an increase in compensation to a specific employee of a public body that is subject to the local government wage increase transparency act may not be closed and shall be

118board used to do is we adjourn into closed session as there was going to be no action taken is that an option we can take as a school board adjourn right after the closing we're going into closed session but as no action will be taking we will be joining the meeting immediately from closed session so nobody hangs out to hear there's no action that's something my board used to do i don't know if it was something fire district world or if it's something we could consider they could stay that john that's a good idea but if they they're following the agenda they know there's nothing there afterwards yeah because i sat and watched your closed session for an hour and 15 minutes to have you adjourn and it's like i could have just went to

119bed sorry about that john yeah you kept me hanging i fell asleep all right uh so may i have a motion to adjourn second okay yes this is i won't be at any more board meetings so this is it for me
