have a very very special recognition and i will turn it over to dr kaskowski great thank you bob i just want to take a quick minute to once again thank blake and asia for their leadership as student board of education members while their time on the board was impacted due to the pandemic they certainly stepped up and brought their voices to the table i very much want to acknowledge the work that they did around equity and diversity and i look forward to how they will use their survey results during our strategic plan meetings thank you for the mature way in which you approached your role on behalf of everyone in district 41 i want to wish you well as you are now hilltoppers i know that you will do great things at glenbard west and
beyond and you will push glenbard west to open up possible leadership opportunities there i'd also like to thank their families for getting them to our board meetings and supporting them and their desire to be student leaders in our district so thank you once again blake and asia and we very much appreciate the work that you did in the time commitment that you put into being student board of education members uh thank you dr if any board members have any acknowledgements for our student board members now would be a good time to do that i did want to personally thank mr noble we've seen you at all of our meetings it's been terrific to have you here both thank you to you and your wife for supporting blake in this endeavor and asia i've gotten to
know your mom and your dad and your and your family and it's been wonderful to see their commitment to your being here and they've been your dad's been a presence at all of these meetings so uh thank both of you for your work and your families okay anyone else no all right well then let me give you an opportunity if you have any uh final words of advice for us before you of course you have the rest of the meeting you have to announce you have to stay you can't leave but perhaps asia any things you'd like to say um thank you for the kind words um i'm sad to leave but i'm also excited to go to high school um and hope that i can open up leadership opportunities for students so thank you
thank you and blake i'd also like to thank you for this experience where i've certainly learned quite a bit and i would also like to thank my family too always important to do that thank you all right wonderful we will now turn to the board and i'll invite board members if there are any board reports on oh no you miss me oh i'm sorry that's i'm sorry i skipped later you know melissa i was so excited to hear the board reports let's go back to dr kaskowski because we have a we have a guest here thank you again i didn't think i would get off so easy without doing an update um tonight i would like to welcome mort sherman from aasa mort i borrowed your bio from the aasa website so um bear with
me for a minute um mort has more than 30 years of administrative experience in raising academic standards closing achievement gaps and uniting stakeholders he has served in public education for over 40 years 25 as a public school superintendent now serving as the aasa associate executive director for leadership network he is responsible for programs which support aspiring and sitting superintendents mort is a commissioner and facilitator for the learning 2025 initiative and is here tonight to answer any questions that our board may have about this opportunity as this is on the agenda for action tonight to catch everyone up district 41 has been selected as a future demonstration district for learning 2025. um more i just like to share that our board has had all of the links and information shared with them prior to this meeting
a couple of times and we have had discussion prior tonight prior to tonight on learning 2025 um but i wanted to um invite you to join us and make sure that we address any additional questions that the board might have so thank you mark for joining us oh okay well let me then invite board members um if they have questions we did have some questions sent in uh ahead of time thanks for for doing that and for the responses but there may be some additional questions or thoughts for our guests so i'm just kind of looking around the room inviting folks if they have any additional questions just bringing my notes up all right ted's bringing his notes up better be prepared mort ted's bringing his notes you know mort i can kick it off
with one of um maybe as a second to one of ted's questions that he asked earlier because i responded but ted had asked a question about what is the one i guess one deliverable or one main point of why participating in learning 2025 would be um valuable for district 41 and and my response after reviewing all of the information and and talking to valerie and and others was really the opportunity to network and do this work on a national level instead of trying to do such big work locally or in a silo as a public school district it's the overall magnitude of the work the importance of the work but doing it on a larger stage with all of the supports that come with learning so um that was my answer but if you want
to weigh in on what's been most valuable for the districts that you have on board already or from your work with the commissioners and and the report that was generated i'll i'll get us kicked off thank you for inviting me first of all to the board members thank you for your service i know this past year has been tough and just as you thank the student representative i hope you're getting lots of thank you notes from the community i'm looking at your faces i'm trying to see whether or not that's an accurate statement i'm hoping that that in fact folks do step forward and and you read an old bio i need to upgrade or update my bio on the website it's now over 50 years in public education i first was a teacher in
0111971 i served as a public school superintendent for 25 years and i am proud to report i am fully recovered but but i love this work and so this question that you're asking about the one most significant service or benefit i think is in part going to sound like a hedge but it's not because part of what we want to do is provide a senior consultant not a program uh not a product but a way of supporting you almost in a concierge mentality so that if you have particular questions and needs as a community within the framework that you see in the virtual background behind me and then the reports that you've read that we could meet that need specifically to the question of partners and i think that's one of the greatest benefits and
particularly from what i know about your district what i've read about it in your application it seems to me that the connection across the country to partners to some of the colleagues that you might meet as as board members because we work with nsba with nassp with naesp sounds thing and alphabet super the national organizations but we do work with all of them and part of it is people such as linda darling hammond whose name i hope you know has called us and said uh okay because i've been picking on her i've known her for 30 years and i said that's nice london another report how about this time we take it to action and so this issue of taking into action is dependent upon finding the best minds across the country linda just issued
a report on seoul the science of learning design and development and she said okay can asa through learning 2025 figure out how to implement this across the school system she co-authored that report with pam cantor so if you look at the two of them you can see that's the kind of people who would come and work with us two other examples i'm albert smith who is the founder of metametrics you probably don't know his name but i make you a bet except for i you maybe all of you know his work he's the one who created lexiles if you go to barnes noble or any other company or any other where you buy books and you look in the spine and says 5.4 reading list he is the person who changed the way we think
about reading levels he is donating one third of his time for each of the next three years on this work bill daggett who wasn't able to make it tonight is donating 100 of his time over the next three years to this project so names such as linda darling hamburg and hubbard smith bill daggett ray mcnulty my co-facilitator for the commission was a vermont commissioner um was a director at gates and was president of ascd is is the president of spn our partner the list goes on but from what i could hear if you as a board our as a staff or as an administration have a question about early learning we're your resource for that from now on if you have a question about seo we have a partnership with castle you just need to
call the senior consultant or you know valerie or me call us and we'll be glad to provide that support the last comment i have is that i think the greatest benefit is becoming a critical friend with other colleagues across the country critical friends of those who are committed to your success thank you mort thank you and you may have anticipated some other questions in your response but um ted had had you pulled up your notes yeah um in regard to uh the um having the consultant um it's spelled out that there's um 16 hours of of consulting time is that per year over over the the four-year period that we'd be participating we'd like to think of the consultant in two ways the 16 hours is directed towards initial conversation about creating a strategy a
framework for going about this work that senior consultant the second part will serve as your resource your concierge for the year if you want to know more about whatever's going on it's well beyond the 16 hours so so if you look at it however you divvy up that 16 hours as a consultant work to you as part of this project okay what happens if we sign up for the first year and we decide now this isn't meeting our expectations are we on the hook for all four years no you're not um you're not a a hook at all that's a year by year decision um we believe uh takes a you're not gonna be able to change and put all these pieces into place if we don't meet your needs it says with any kind
of service support system you're not obligated we don't sign for your contracts okay um maybe i might be anticipating one of jess's questions but um it talks about being data driven and monitoring and and measuring um and measuring some things that you know you can't just take a test um so it wasn't clear where those kinds of resources are um and for for measuring measuring some of those um you know intangibles yeah ted uh if i may call you ted that's one of the most important parts um i think of this work is that we will look to different districts to participate maybe not everybody has that question but albert smith again is now head of metametrics and you could google him take a look at his work the guy who created lexiles who's donating
one-third of his time for districts that are interested we will be creating a dashboard uh specific to this work that could be used publicly you as a board could share it that your superintendent the staff can say hey look at one of our strategic errors has to do with uh i'm picking i become like this really great person i could i could look at the screen behind me you know look at cognitive growth over time um that's a that's a pretty new concept for a lot of districts and so if somebody wants to work with another 15 or 20 to 30 districts across the country to develop one piece or the whole dashboard that will be an opportunity you'll have to work with uh dr malbert smith okay so again we're not coming with that
product to say here's the value we want we want you to have a voice in that got it okay all right that's all i have for now well thank you that was ted that was easy i was set up to ask tough questions oh you shouldn't invite him that way mort you shouldn't test him that way no i was a superintendent for 25 years i'm you know i'm fine good good good um other board members any additional questions no not seeing any just no just do you have one please so it sounds like a concierge service model that they're the you get more you put into it the more you get out of it kind of situation like any class i've ever taken but how do we make sure that we as a district are
getting the most out of this partnership i i couldn't hear you how did you be sure what sorry i didn't have my mic on how do we how do we make sure that as a district we're getting the most out of the program since it's as you described sort of like a concierge model well i would invite you um not to wait till the end to make that decision but during the course of the year look at it as a formative way for example you as a team are invited to be part of this discussion not just your superintendent and so on july 28th we're going to have a soft launch with ray mcnulty who's going to talk about leadership in this kind of event what's called the vacuum world you know volatile and uncertain
uh world um on august 24th we're gonna have the second part of our soft launch which will be with me and valerie and bill daggett and ray mcnulty and others talking specifically about how to become engaged but but it's not just one person we invite all of you to be part of them every month during the course of this year we'll have virtual conversations with the leaders the partners question whether it's linda darling and the pam kent or any of the folks that we bring in followed by use of our lms which is canvas you'll have a section there for your district and being part of the communities of practice so you can monitor that progress um we're having our conference next year in nashville and the specific topic of the conference next year happens
to be you can see it on my screen is this in fact this commission we've you know we're i don't know i guess you know a little bit about asa we're the largest superintendents association we have nine thousand members um across the country uh so we represent every superintendent but 9 000 members of our of the country are members of asa so our focus next year will be um on on that in fact we will invite uh members of districts to be part of that next june will hold the national conference of all the districts to bring them together uh bill daggett has run what's called the model schools conference for about 30 years we will be building that model uh into this commission's work um and and so i'll give you two more pieces
you have an ongoing way of formatively looking at the work through it on through the eyes of a board member but in addition to that if you have a question you know pass it on to your superintendent to me or to to ray mcnulty because as now the co-directors of this effort we want to make sure you get what you need if you're not happy don't wait to the end of the year if you need something specific let us know but there is no end of the year check sheet did you accomplish the following so i think there's a mutual responsibility between what we offer and what you ask is that helpful yes thank you jess thank you mor anyone else more just one question for me i thank and and i wanted to um
express my appreciation for the rigorousness and the intensity of the 2025 report spent a lot of time with it and it it it seems like a very authentic genuine courageous document one of the one of your areas for systemic design is culture and you you stress strongly that schools be future driven and it it struck me that that may have been one of the areas here where perhaps the consultants have some prescription in mind or they have certain ideas of of how a school would be future driven like how it will what will be the components of thinking about preparing uh young people for the future and i was just wondering if you could parse that out a little bit is this something where we have some thoughts um and we're sharing those with you
and you're going to help us make that happen uh or is there something that might be more prescriptive that we would engage with um i love that question for lots of reasons and i'll start maybe a two or three part answer as quickly as i can i had the good fortune to study as a superintendent um for a year or two at the university of pennsylvania with a guy named ross akov who was the head of the wharton school and he was not a business major he was an architect and he describes you know is that kind of amazing that an architect became head of the b-school and he said here's why because business is about design about figuring out how to move ahead and the key to the learning 2025 being future driven is
not to go from where we are necessarily to some point but to make that stake in the future to plant that stake and then look at it as an idealized solution and figure out how to get there and he had a phrase that i love to this day he said you know we just solved the problems of the past we're going to do better what we're already doing wrong rather creating an idealized solution of figuring out how to get there this project is working together to create that idealized solution if we had all the answers we want to have the poverty levels we have across america we want to have the dropout rates we have across america we would have all the issues maybe that you're not experiencing but but you know i had a
conversation today with dc public schools who are joining is going to become a colleague of yours you want to hear some issues and and so there's a microcosm there because they're doing great work with sel my belief and the answer to your question there is not a fixed algorithm about what the future might look like your district might look a little bit different than had i been in still in alexandria the superintendent or chariot of new jersey or tena fly where our superintendent and i hope that these guard rails that we have within the report provide latitude for providing answers for what meets your communities need which is my final piece on in that we talk about ecosystems part of the belief that we have is you as a board your administration can do it
by yourself you need to work with the mental health professionals within the community with the mayor's office with business with the chamber of commerce all of those we believe make up the future of education in a vibrant coherent way a little bit differently than before so all the pieces in there besides you know the topics like early learning and sel i think the ecosystem although i don't like that word but i think the congruence of a community is what's going to control and direct schooling of the future thank you mark appreciate it my pleasure okay uh thank you aboard for your questions and attention melissa do you have anything else for us or for more before we let him go um no this was really you know an opportunity to address any final board questions
um you know i can share with the board that i i did my national certification program with aasa and and found that they delivered on everything that was promised um at the start of that program with them um but as mark said it's a mutual relationship so you get out of it what you put into it and um finishing and and taking the initiative to reach out and network is part of the responsibility that we have to own um as well but everything that i've done through aasa so far has been of extremely high quality thank you very good thank you well more then we will say thank you and we'll allow you to get your rest of your evening wherever you may be thank you i'm in virginia where it's nice and cool be
well everybody thank you for the chance to talk with you be well have a nice evening bye bye all right melissa before i shortchange you on your superintendent's report you may have a few other things i do i do um just wanted to give a quick update um as many of you may know the governor did extend his executive order through july 24th um 2021 so included in this order is the requirement for masking in schools we will continue to monitor this closely for change prior to next year but what it means for now is that if we have students present in our buildings we we are still masking in accordance with that order um finally just a very quick explanation about school recognition requirements for public schools in illinois i think throughout the pandemic
we've been asked um point blank many times why don't we deviate from the directives or why are we bound to comply and parochial schools private schools are not i did feel it was important to just you know reiterate and explain a little bit more about that recognition process and public schools cannot opt out of this we are audited on our compliance and our recognition status is acknowledged or granted by isb so schools we are currently um fully recognized um but in the event that we started to pick and choose out of mandates and requirements what we wanted to file follow and what we didn't um we could um by virtue of his be be um lose our fully recognized status and and doing so um definitely connects to health and safety that is part of
what we're audited and held accountable for um but schools do not school districts who do not comply jeopardize our fully recognized status and risk state imposed sanctions along with jeopardizing the legal standing of the district whereas that's a voluntary process for parochial and private schools they can opt to voluntarily go through the recognition process but public schools don't get to i think questions have been asked about that and and um just something that i wanted to to offer a bit more um clarification on um we are still waiting um as many are aware for the guidance and directives for next year for msb um we keep putting the pressure on anywhere that we can um we have um a re-reopening plan that is in the works that really all we are waiting for um is
the final directives for next year so we're ready to put that out and if it takes longer we'll put it out with um some indications of where we're still waiting for isb um to move forward hopefully that will come soon but we are a little bit in a holding pattern with things waiting for them um but um no change from the last time i reported on this okay thank you very much all right now we will turn to board reports i just have a short one um our iasb resolution and um uh what do we call it amended belief statement were submitted by mrs mook to the isb so thank you to her for doing that um and then i got an email from the iasb people that the um the committee the resolutions committee
will meet on august 6th and they will let us know more about our um what we need to do for that so last year it was on zoom i had to like give a little testimony kind of intro to our resolution so i'll do the same thing i don't know if it'll be on zoom or if i'll have to go wherever but um i'm prepared to do whatever we need to do but that'll be august 6 and i will update you as i find out more thank you julie thank you and mrs milk thank you for getting the resolution and the amended statement in thank you uh anyone else i think jess is about to say something yes go ahead um yeah i have i have a couple reports i did attend um a special
workshop meeting for pep the partnership for educational progress and we had some great discussions about the future of pep and reinvigorating our outreach to all the member districts that are part of the glenbard school system and feeder districts as well as creating a focus on equity so more to come from from those those discussions but an exciting step off point to try to get back not not back to normal but just restart after things were a little different during the past year and a half and then i have a report regarding d41 kids and i have some notes that were provided to me so i want to just um look at those carefully but we have launched um our dolly parton imagination library program and so we're super excited about that this program means that
each child birth to five is in the boundaries of district 41 are eligible to receive one book a month if they are sponsored by d41 c41 kids we already have 105 children registered that means one personalized book a month will be mailed directly to that child there's no cost to the families who register um and we encourage all the children birth to five to register within the d41 boundaries and you can go to our facebook page and our website to find those links c41kids.org um [Music] and soon we will be able to register at the library so look out for that as well while you're at the library if you would like to sponsor a child and help raise the funds to cover the costs of this program it's 27 a year to sponsor a
child and for a short time we are raffling off a gorgeous quilt that was um handmade by dr lynn bruno who is also the one spearheading and organizing and making sure we're all doing the things that need to be done to get this program launched and that quilt will be on display at the library in july and at the bookstore in august and it will be raffled off in september and there was more but i'll leave it at that okay thank you thank you it's a beautiful quilt by the way um okay uh other ted maybe you had was just gonna mention the um uh community conversation that you and i had uh on friday i didn't know if you had more to say i just wanted to thank um everyone who came out and
had a chat with us it was a i thought i thought it was a really good good good number of conversations that we had yeah so i i would agree and i want to thank uh erica graybill for setting that up and and for the folks at starbucks for making the space available to us and to the families that came out we were scheduled for an hour but we stayed for two hours and we were in conversation each time for that entire time on different on different subjects with people who live in different parts of the community so it was a good start and it was a nice feeling i'm grateful to ted for coming out and to the parents that came out and particularly to erica for setting those up so everyone should look
for the following schedule the following dates that are out there on the website for meeting with with board members great thank you all right and then it's very sad our last student board reports footwell from these two students so i don't know if you have one but asia blake do you have a final report no okay we don't have fun today all right very good thank you okay members of the public who wish to address the board should check in with mrs moak the board recording secretary speakers are asked to maintain respectful decorum and limit comments three minutes or less this is mochas or anyone who wished to make public comment this evening let it be known that mrs mo called out mr noble who just waved and said hi that was a great public
comment thank you oh that was good your daughter put us up okay all right we will then move into our presentations for this evening and we're going to start with the school perception survey report melissa you want to introduce our esteemed guest and friend of the district absolutely tonight i would like to welcome bill foster from school perceptions bill will be sharing the survey overview from our recent future planning survey bill as you know has worked closely with district 41 on several surveys so bill knows our district quite well thank you for joining us tonight bill and i'm going to turn it over to you well great thanks for having me tonight um so my job is to take you through what the survey results were and i i it i looked back at my
notes tonight i've been working with the district since 2014 so i guess i've i've been around a little bit and i enjoy working with your district so thanks for having me tonight um so here we go so a bit on school perceptions we were founded in 2002 we do a lot of staff student and parent surveys in fact we've done one in at least one in every state in the union and we also do a lot of community surveys for the sake of strategic planning and referendum preparation so your survey was fairly unique it went out in mid-may and then i think the deadline was in early june all parents could take uh the survey either online or if they requested they could receive a paper copy of the survey and we had 998 parents
respond and i went back and looked and that's actually pretty much on par with what we've seen in previous years actually all the way back in 2014 we had just over a thousand parents respond so it's it's a good response rate especially given it was later in the year who took our survey we had one question which schools do your children attend we had participation from all the schools if you're a math person you say well wait a minute these percentages don't add up to 100 and you are correct and the reason why is because a person or a parent could have a child in more than one school but you you know as you have more grade levels you tend to uh it looks like the hadley junior high were a little bit higher
in response and maybe churchill's a bit smaller of a school we had one question asking about ethnicity we had 81 percent of our response that self reported they were white and then uh nine percent asian uh six percent didn't prefer not to respond and then a smaller percentage all the way down we had one question on grade level so it looks like as the parents children get older maybe they respond a little bit less the first section we call diversity equity inclusion which is one of the strategic initiatives for the district these were pretty much uh custom questions for the district the way we framed it was we had the statement i feel safe and welcomed at my child's school we then calculated a simple average based on the response if everybody would have strongly
agreed to be a five you can't get higher than a five you can't get below a one there is not a neutral so we kind of ask people to we're maybe in the middle to take a leaning so that's one way to analyze the data is by the simple average the other way to look at it is by the percent who either strongly agreed or agreed with the statement which is maybe a little bit easier to understand so you can see 95 percent of all parents responding so they feel safe and welcome at the school and all the way down to the lowest one which still isn't very low i feel my culture and beliefs are represented at the school that was the lowest one in the section but you still had 88 percent of
the parent or family member parents and family members responding that they agree with that statement so all very positive what priority would you place on improving diversity equity and inclusion you can see 37 percent said high 30 percent were medium and 20 percent were low so they're leaning towards that this is a and should be a high priority next section had to do with innovation and specifically my family has access to enough computers and devices 97 said yes to that appropriate computer skills was at 92 percent and 85 percent said technology is used effectively to support teaching and learning we did have one question in terms of overall use you could be too high just right or too low and here we have 25 percent of our parents who said uh there's maybe too much
use of technology i think especially in the in the cohort year i think i know my kids and most kids maybe spent too much time on on screen and not enough time uh socializing and and uh doing things like that so this might have this might be skewed a bit for the year we went just went through but as of may there was some parents who expressed a concern with maybe a little bit too much technology and what priority would you place on integrating more technology in our teaching strategies again that's not where parents are saying you should probably emphasize it's a little bit lower so only 19 percent said hi there um conversely problem-based learning um [Music] is uh pretty popular in fact 47 percent of your respondents said that should be a high
with 34 saying it's a medium prior we're with only 10 percent low in fact of all the areas we tested problem-based learning turned out to be the highest priority in terms of placing an emphasis on you know training professional development as well as curriculum development so that is a relatively high priority social emotional well-being and mental health that was the next section we talked about expanding the range of interventions and supports for the social emotional development mental wellness of our students and what priority should that be here we put a little more context in the response scale where high was mental wellness is my first priority that was about a third folks were at 52 percent or about split where they kind of balanced it between uh academic rigor and mental health and then there
was a 11 percent or relatively smaller group who said academics is my first priority so net net at the end of the covered year i think parents are concerned with the mental health and well-being of their students it was a difficult year we get to the topic of full day kindergarten we've been there before we asked a series of yes no questions here you could say yes or no pretty simple to analyze if everybody would have said yes it would be a 10 if everybody said no it'd be a one um and then we put the percent of those who who expressed yes and you could see the uh do you support d41 pursuing a plan to offer it 85 percent of the parents said yes to that and then if you had a child
younger than school age would you send them 71 said yes to that and would you support district 41 spending district funds to build a pre kindergarten center a majority or 65 percent said yes to that and would you support district 41 taking on debt um there they're a little they're kind of split 50 50 on that and i suspect this would highly correlate to those who have kids that are could participate or are planning having children that could participate as opposed to the parents who have eighth graders who probably you know they're they're less anxious to have that done and then what priority would you have again uh 25 being high with 36 percent saying that's a relatively low priority again because it serves a smaller subgroup and i think that was the end of
the quantitative analysis so i'll pause answer questions thank you bill let me look around and see if board members have any questions for uh for bill no one's shaking at this point no one has a question so we're bill why don't you um then review uh the the comments it sound like you were about to do that and if there are any questions at the end we'll then we'll bring them up all right so then we do a comment theme analysis the way we do this is we read all the comments uh we try to identify the prevailing themes and then we cut and paste verbatim the comments that represent that theme now this is a i would call this more of a subjective art as opposed to a absolutely uh objective there's a not
a perfect way to do it but we we do have some software that helps us with this analysis and on the first theme well in fact let me go through and you can kind of see what the report looks like parents shared comments relative to the diversity inclusion and the importance of focusing on core academics here i would say as we saw in the priority is some people believe this is a very high priority some people believe it's a low priority and so we we triggered um you know comments from really both perspectives and there's actually two pages of comments here the one prevailing theme that we identified that although this isn't very important don't forget about focusing on core academics so which of course is part of your mission part of what you're in
business to provide so that was kind of the first theme and again this is in your board packets i believe it'll be posted on the website so you can see all the comments [Music] and the next thing we identified was parents expressed concerns regarding bullying and student behavior and again there's something that a couple things to think about here is one is the time of year and or if there was an incident that occurred you know something happened um you know a day or two before the survey went out that will trigger this to be a theme just an editorial comment from i guess my experience dealing with this topic is it's very difficult and that is the more emphasis i've seen districts put on it actually the worse the perception of bullying can become
and we did a project um recently where we we did a focus group with some students we're trying to come up with what is the the perfect bullying question that we should be asking and actually it was a middle school student who said you know i think the question you should ask and i thought this was pretty insightful was if i was being bullied i would know how to get help uh at the at the school and uh and i thought that was really insightful because i think the school district is on the hook for providing that um but as you as i've studied bowling um you know it's it's been around forever it'll probably always be around forever so you're never going to eliminate it it's a but it's a very very challenging topic
for for districts so in any event um that is on the minds of parents and consequently uh it's um it's going to be important for the school district to think about and talk about that in the upcoming year the next theme that we identified was parents generally appreciate the use of technology but some offered suggestions for improvements and want to avoid too much screen time or relevance on devices so as we saw in the quantitative results that about 25 percent of the parents have a concern there might be too much screen time too much emphasis on technology again it's not across the board but this was a theme that popped out from the qualitative results and and then of course we had a section on full day kindergarten so that then triggers a a topic
which is parents who want it um continue to lobby for it in their comments so there is definitely support for full day kindergarten at uh glen ellen district 41. and the last theme that we again saw in the quantitative results was that people really support problem-based learning i think they're beginning to understand what that is how it works and the benefits of that so there that was another topic that generated generally pretty positive comments in terms of parents supporting more problem-based learning in the classroom and i believe got one more the last thing we identified was parents see a need for additional support for struggling students and those who with social emotional needs especially after the coca-19 pandemic again it was a very hard year it was even a hard finish to a hard year
right in my opinion and uh we've gotten through it but i think uh parents are concerned and they're concerned about the mental health of their kids and what impact it had on them and i believe that was the last theme and it was so questions thank you bill uh bill i'm going to actually ask a question that occurred to me you noted 85 percent answered yes to support for full day kindergarten can you tell me can you tell the board what percentage of and you may not have it at your fingertips but you may know it what percentage right actually answered the question because you say 85 percent for those who expressed an opinion i'd be curious what the percentage was who expressed an opinion uh well i can answer that for you pretty quickly
um let me oh yeah it's because you got the data at your fingers i got the data but i don't i don't know it off off the top of my head okay if there's another question i can i can dig that up close well so the other question is about the diversity topic there was a there was a slide that showed bar graphs breaking down how high a priority dei would be and i was curious given the demographic percentages of people who took the survey and i know they're not comparable pools but do you know do you have a sense of how that was answered if you depending on the demographic of the respondent i did not yeah i didn't i certainly can do that but i have not done that would take me a
little bit more time okay we won't hold that against you tonight i am looking at the data right now on in terms of the uh in terms of support we had 70 said yes they would support uh full full day kindergarten uh 12 said no and we had 17.5 that were not sure undecided okay so that would be the number that didn't actually offer an opinion yes or no okay great thank you all right board members uh last call any questions for mr foster we're good jess this really isn't a question for mr foster but just a comment about this slide in general um you know 85 percent say that they want us to pursue a plan but the number that want us to use district funds to build it you know a center of
you know it says pre-k but that pre-k is a precursor to the full-day kindergarten drops to 65 and you know we are one of the wealthiest communities in one of the it's we're duped in dupage county which is the second wealthiest county in the state um so we're not going to get gifted from any program the dollars to do this probably so i do think we as a community have to be realistic about where this money is going to come from um and short of it being district funds then it's debt those are those are the choices because there aren't a lot of gifts out there that come to one of the wealthiest communities in one of the wealthiest counties so i just want to put that out there i do think we need to
pursue other types of funding if it's available we do have the resources we do have people who are dedicated to education we do have the d41 kids foundation that is a pathway for investment for outside dollars um so if i can plant a seed in the minds of anybody who's watching this if they want to help make it uh possible then perhaps one of the pathways is through d41 kids and you can contact me about how to get involved in the foundation to help make that happen but but the support seems to be there from parents and funding funding is the part that has always been um the huge obstacle we need to be realistic about who we are and what we qualify for thank you thank you jess thank you okay uh okay please
i am i just wanna it's not a a question it's just an observation um i was looking at the numbers and seeing that it was about 81 white that had answered the survey and then reading over the comments about diversity it was kind of disturbing for me um because it's not going to be a priority for somebody who's not going through it and then if 81 percent is white who's answering the survey and we have such small amount percentage percentages of non-whites that took the survey what could we do to improve that going forward and make it less biased i guess for lack of a better word um because it's it's you can't make these you know very you can't make concrete analysis without having a full survey um to the community and um we're
we're are we lacking that we weren't able to get a better number for the minorities to participate uh in the survey so um yeah in the comments i was very hard for me to read those well i appreciate your observation table and that they were informing my questions to bill also about the uh the actual breakdown that priority question i i was also aware of the comments but looking at the the breakdown of who responded uh and and knowing how they may be different they may correlate frankly uh to race that wouldn't necessarily be a surprise but but the small number does just leave questions unanswered and so that's a challenge for the district as we do our work to to get proper input and feedback from all families from all learners so that we
have a much better picture because you can only do so much with the data right you need good quality data so i do think that is a question if i can add on to that for for bill perhaps i mean we had almost a thousand people take the survey and almost 20 of them uh were non-white so can we that's 200 responses is that enough sample that we could look at those numbers a little bit differently so we can look at our non-white community and how those results would be a little bit show us a different story because right now the predominant story is about what all the caucasians thought it that makes it sound like this is the story of the district well it's predominantly the story and it is because that's that's the
distribution of our district so that's it's not a false story but if we truly care about elevating those voices can would it be appropriate to segment that data in that way to look at those numbers to see how that story might be different if we're looking at those numbers that way but even nine percent said they didn't want to respond so we don't need it it's actually less than the percent when you don't yeah yeah but but that's again i think i appreciate just this question because that again it's it's it's similar to uh to what i was asking and you don't have those numbers this evening but it but you could uh provide the board with the breakdown of of the uh non-caucasian respondents bill yeah i can so what in our world we
would just call that a cross tab so we'll be able to look at it really every response by the self-reported um in a um race question and i you know that you have to kind of put a footnote on it because some of the ends will get pretty small right but i think you would be able to glean some insights into the degree of difference in viewpoints from looking at that um and and i think that could give you some really good um because you're right i'm not sure if it's you know it's not 200 because we had some that chose not to respond i don't know where you would classify that group but you can look at that group as well but i will i will run through and run run those numbers for
you that'll take me just a bit of time i'd like to do that right now but it'll just take me a few minutes but um i can certainly get that out to the report for or for the next board meeting would uh would other board members be interested in seeing that information seeing those crosstabs yes chris okay good great thank you bill thank you okay then well bill appreciate your work appreciate your time all right thank you thank you very much we'll then let bill go and we will move on to our second presentation which is a report from cit the continuous improvement team all righty several weeks and i do mean several we were asked to create a presentation about lessons learned during the pandemic i took this to our continuing continuous improvement team
for discussion and then each building contributed and ken has created a compilation of of input and feedback and examples that have come from every school so can can you pull that up [Music] so [Music] something that has impressed us and that we've talked about frequently in our fifth grade plc at lincoln is the kids adaptability whether we're in person or remote it's not just that they're they know tech but more they're also so willing to try to be flexible and go with whatever happens for the day if we have glitches or unexpected situations that day and they're also showing so much kindness within the classes they're helping each other out they're helping out the teachers just generally contributing to a positive community vibe within the classrooms what i've noticed since last march to this march
many kids have taken ownership of their own learning it was definitely displayed when kids were on quarantine or when they weren't in our classrooms getting emails from them asking i'm not going to be in what's the assignment can i turn this in asking to meet with us and i felt very impressed with their perseverance their grit and ability to go above and beyond where maybe in other years that might not have been present but i definitely feel that the kids have gotten a lot out of this year and have taken a lot of skills that we talk about and they actually put them into practice this year is my second year of teaching and i have learned so much from my colleagues this year they have taught me that it is the most important thing
to find the goodness in each day to go with the flow and to be okay with making mistakes i am so thankful for my colleagues and for my team for supporting me and loving me and being so inclusive and so joyful i have to say that i feel like i was more nervous about remote learning than my students were when they came on the first week of lessons they had such a positive attitude and they were smiling and excited and ready to learn their instruments this helped me feel confident in this new journey of teaching band remotely that we were about to embark on students said to me you know mrs fairborne i practiced on sunday and monday and it was really hard to play one of the lines and i decided that on tuesday
i was going to try it one more time and i did it and i said to her i said to her that is it i've been thinking about that you know all year long on how these awesome students have persevered and have continued to inspire us and inspire themselves [Music] but i believe that there was a lot of positives that came out of it it encouraged teachers to learn different ways to teach it forced us to learn technology but i believe that that's something we'll start using more and more kids were taught that they had to advocate for themselves more we weren't sitting next to them we couldn't tell if they were struggling as easily and i think that they realized that and started speaking up a little bit more and asking for help more
often and that's a gift that every educator wishes that would happen daily last year and at the beginning of this year when we were remote we were able to connect with them and do scavenger hunts and do different activities with them that got them very excited to see their teachers and their classmates and i believe that this year it became such a sense of relief to see their friends and their teachers and it was a nice safe haven for them and i think that that is a beautiful thing i had heard of teletherapy practice prior to march of but it was something that i didn't think could work how could i provide communication therapy to a child through a computer screen this year has taught me that i can provide communication therapy to children for
computer screen there have been challenges but i think there have been positives as well i have been able to connect with my students individually each week i've been able to provide up close and personal visual models for sound productions and i've been able to involve more parents in the therapy process i think back to the beginning which was so overwhelming and so out of my comfort zone and but the thing i was most concerned about at that time was building relationships with my students i must say i was happily incorrect in that relationship building because i feel like when i saw these kids on our google meets and i got a bigger window into their home life and into their likes and into their dislikes at the very root i was able to reach them
in different ways than i have in any other school year they they were more comfortable talking answering questions they were couple just being who they are remote learning was definitely a challenge but i think that we learned a lot about ourselves our colleagues our students we also learned a lot about the parents within our classrooms for me personally remote learning really engaged me in innovation and changing the way that i approach teaching each day i learned a lot about incorporating 21st century skills into remote learning and engaging students using technology we still covered all the content that we needed to and it was actually a really awesome experience to learn so much i got to see kind of a glimpse into the students lives and their interactions with their families and overall like the parents
have just been amazing they've been engaging with the kids they've been learning with us they've been helping and i'm so grateful for everything that they did and i actually feel like they learned a lot about teaching first grade through this as well and i think it was a beneficial experience for both of us i am just so grateful for everything that happened this year i'm looking at it from the standpoint of we learned more we helped each other and we will continue to help each other get through this [Music] i was inspired by how resilient the students are and so proud of them for how much they have had to adapt to in such a short period of time to have the ability to see firsthand how the covid19 pandemic affects so many students on
all different aspects we also learned that the students are flexible adaptable collaborative and wonderful problem solvers remote learning showed strengths with technology that we may have never seen in person we learned to be flexible and not waste energy thinking about the cans but thinking how we can do things well we worked hard to keep students engaged in the curriculum and also with each other we found fun ways for students to learn key concepts and we've been able to work well with individuals or in breakout rooms with small groups and finally we learned that we don't need all the bells and whistles to be effective but using some technology well and remembering good teaching practices can help us be successful [Music] my colleagues are my heroes even in the toughest situations they have persevered we all
have an undeniable passion for doing what is best for our students we are focused on each other's strengths such as our tech and curriculum expertise and organizational skills we have been able to connect with colleagues from across the district more frequently than before we have created lessons collaboratively we have shared so many new ideas and we've been there to support one another i immediately start thinking about the successes i know that the challenges have been challenging but we have overcome so much our students and our teachers have shown flexibility and adaptability and have grown so much in so many areas of technology as well as just being able to change the way we do things quickly and look forward to coming together as a group in a new and unique way so one thing i've
noticed with our students is that um some of their personalities have sort of flipped for me i i've thought some of the students who are typically very quiet or just kind of part of the group when they come in and out of the library and digital media class with me almost being unseen are now being heard and are finding this comfort in emailing me commenting on in our google classroom speaking out and unmuting themselves during class to ask questions or using a chat box which i know might seem silly to think but giving these students some of these ways to exert themselves and put their thoughts out to the class in a safe and comfortable way has made a difference and i have been able to connect more with these students during our time in
remote learning i never once doubted the awesomeness of my flesh colleagues after moving to all asynchronous in the spring and then to a totally remote setting this fall our grade level teams are rocking our plc's across the district we are producing some of our best material yet everyone on our team brings something different and important to the table creativity tech savviness compassion grammar content pleasing visuals inclusivity and fun [Music] we are giving our students so much good stuff we are getting great workouts in we're getting their heart rates up for an extended period of time we also are tying in all the academic pieces that have to do with physical education [Music] this year has been very challenging we've had to constantly adapt to new changes i'd like to thank the district 41 staff for
being with us every step of the way and supporting us this year would not have been possible without them thank you this year has not been smooth sailing the entire journey from the constant schedule changes to the last minute adjustments our district figures have done and continuing to do a wonderful job coming together and working with whatever was thrown at them this entire year i have been remote and even though teachers and students have been separated the teachers of this district have found a way to make their online classrooms welcoming and safe this year has tested us all we finally made it to the end together and together we'll be moving forward into summer first off i want to thank everybody who contributed and thank ken for always being able to pull everybody's work together
and make it look like just seamless from start to finish but um jess i believe this was your idea and and thank you for having it because i think um each team took something different away from um speaking with their colleagues and pulling their information together and we didn't script or tell them what to say this all came from buildings and from teams so um i think the celebrations are many the challenges were many um but there are definitely some takeaways um from this past year and a half of things where we've emerged stronger and our and our kind of tagline for next year will be stronger together and better than ever so um you know a lot of good came from the struggles a lot of independence a lot of resilience um and and
just the learning and flexibility that both kids and staff members had to exhibit and learn how to function and every single day um the advances in our use of technology and our comfort level with technology it's not about more technology and more screen time it's about what you do with it and and i really think um you know technology is key to um just offering opportunities to kids who bring different life experiences to the table so we're already talking about all of the gains and benefits and what we've learned from next year that we don't from last year that we don't want to see go away so i think it was a very valuable experience and thank you to ken it was great to see it all pulled together on behalf of the board i
also want to thank jess for making the recommendation and for the board supporting it and for the folks at cit including kent for taking the time to be so thoughtful and putting something together it is a reminder that even during a truly trying year some good things were done and some lessons were learned and it's important to celebrate uh doing that so thank you thank you thank you um thank you for the great effort that was put into it and i feel like my two key takeaways were you know wow there were actually some right positive things you know i think we focused a lot on how hard it was and and and that doesn't diminish how hard it was but it is nice to see so many positive things shared um and also that
the the things that were learned helped provide some new layers of support for differentiating for our learners that i think we can continue to take advantage of and so i think those are really positive things so thank you everyone for responding to that request thank you all right we have one more presentation uh melissa parent teacher advisory absolutely i'm going to turn it over to jeff and laurel and thank them both for being here jeff i know you came from being a dad in a different activity and um and laurel you as well so thank you for joining us tonight and they're going to give the annual um p-tech report thank you we we appreciate that um that was a hard presentation to follow i will just say that out loud but you don't have
any poems or anything like any music [Laughter] so anyway but thank you we're looking forward to sharing this with you because this is something that i know jeff and i and the rest of the district really do believe in and um ken if you don't mind just going to that next uh slide we pulled together an agenda this year to um really do more of a recap of this very you know unusual unique um school year that we just had and then we used that as really more of a kickoff in terms of thinking about what we're going to do next year because we are proposing and looking forward to creating a much more robust schedule where we'll have four meetings rather than the typical one meeting for ptac which allows us with that parent-teacher
advisory committee to really bring our parents in as well as our teacher committee members and get some feedback from them throughout the year with a variety of different topics of what we try to cover particularly in the year when the social emotional as we just also saw in the perception survey again is just so important to continue to focus on as we step into the school year so this was our agenda and then if you don't mind going to the next slide ken so whenever we ask people if they'd be interested in joining our ptac it's not it's not one of the more well-known committees so we get questions well what exactly is ptac and and what have you done with that over the years and having presented quite a bit to the board at
the end of each school year these are some of the topics that we've come together to share with the board and that we've worked on but first thing parent-teacher advisory we provide feedback and regarding topics among other things such as student discipline policy and procedure a few years ago we talked a lot about senate bill 100 and how that had an effect on restorative justice and consequences for actions we talked a little bit about discrimination of student conduct information which led directly to senate bill 100 we also had a culture of care that was probably one of the first things that i was involved with on ptac and then we followed that up the last couple of years with four pillars that we we we really focused on before we adopted second step and those
pillars were kindness empathy mindfulness and inclusion and that was more of a grassroots approach that we had about three years ago while we we researched and looked for a program that could help us deliver the social emotional learning common core standards and it was really kind of a cool concept because we we chose those four those four concepts and then throughout the year our staff actually downloaded shared created everything lessons to go along with those concepts and we actually have parent homework as well and we're going to look to reintroduce that parent component again this year with some second step assignments and then with covid19 and the pandemic you know we're noticing that our social emotional academic and behavior engagement we really need to address that and you it's come up quite a bit each
of our presenters tonight has brought it up in some form so we're really seeing that that that's a great need that we'll be working on and then behavioral interventions we're reviewing information and providing feedback about students with disabilities and discipline and then that learning perspective from the social emotional angle we expect a broader and more comprehensive approach to the committee's purpose as we create more informed opportunities for information and sharing that feedback from the school year and like laurel said in the past we've come together after spring break we've had three to four meetings and it's a lot to ask parents at the end of a school year and staff and we met consecutive four weeks in a row but what we're hoping to do is start it off um coming together at the beginning
of the school year and laying out our focus for the year and then coming together in the winter and then probably twice in the spring to kind of wrap up where we'd like to go and share our information so that's one of the things that we're proposing and we'll cover that again in the next steps so some of the things that i normally do when i present about ptac is we talk about what we did this year and with last year us not coming together even though i presented last year we shared a little bit um we were able to even though we were in school out of school regardless of the model we still were able to get really good things done with our social emotional learning um our second step program you know
this was grades pre-k through fifth grade it's a program rooted in social emotional learning and it really helped us transform schools into supporting successful learning environments um where the kid the staff was equipped to help the students thrive um and most importantly it supports it supports diverse educational needs and and i have feedback i actually asked my staff at franklin to provide some feedback on how they thought this year went i did the same thing last year and was able to get feedback from around the district so um we'll be able to share that with you in a second as well and then i'm going to let laurel talk a little bit about pianorama for sixth to eighth grade absolutely um and i actually will add in here as i start to talk about this
that um a really nice um addition that we will have to uh the two of us in terms of co-chairing is going to be mandy kennel who's our assistant principal here at hadley and she has really stepped up and been working with the have the advisory team to work through how they're implementing their social emotional lessons on it on a daily basis here at headley so they used panorama which is really more of a program that helps to gather the data and then their advisory team analyzed all of that data to help them follow up on the lessons that were very important and that carried out the same theme and even some of that common language from second step but were built better for the middle school population with them in mind in terms of
how they would prefer to interact and she'll be joining us as i said as we step into this next year to be able to share with all of you some more information about how they're continuing that path and then that last talking point we talked about engagement we've been doing our cycles of inquiry study as a principal team um with other principles in dupage county and one of the one of the one of the areas we really wanted to improve on was student engagement and when we started this two or three years ago we were focused on literacy engagement but now with with the pandemic occurring we're really focusing just on student engagement within school itself and i feel like one of the benefits from this year is we we have our ad teams but
then the principals were able to meet with dr mccleskey each week on monday to really focus on the academic parts of it as well and i really feel like that's that was like a really good precursor for the principals to work with their buildings on increasing that engagement having those meetings with dr mccleskey on monday is kind of setting the week and what we're looking to do is regardless you know we went through many platforms this year but we really want to look at their participation now that we should be back in school hopefully intended attendance will approve and then really look at the progress in certain areas that we're identifying related to our school improvement plans and then you know some ancillary ones as well so i'm looking forward to that and then this
is the feedback i garnered from my staff last year i apologized last year i was able to get it from around the district but i just sent my staff um you know i'm like i'm the i'm the principal that sends them an email a week into summer and asked for feedback so i wasn't i was really not sure if i could share any of it maybe what they would have sent me at this point um but they were super specific with some of their feedback and i'm not going to read it all to you but if you look through it they talk a lot about them and the biggest takeaway i had from it was just the conversations they were able to have with their students a lot of conferring a lot of explanation and
going through things together they talk about um the the common vocabulary that even carried over to home we talked about the platform to improve school and classroom climate and culture and that school community engagement came up in a couple of the feedback which i appreciated um and then the last one said it really well inclusive and easy to modify for all learners weaving second step sel into the school day in general not just a lesson but generalization would be a nice improvement and i feel like one of the things we talked about when we we talked about kind of pulling back on specialization this past year for grades three four and five our second step occurred in literacy but now with us with specialization being removed there's an opportunity for all teachers in those grade
levels to start their day with second step and then weave it through the rest of their day and that was one of our talking points with that as well so then as we look into the middle school arena one of the benefits that we have learned from second step is that it really allows those students to share and learn some common language come in words things that they can know how and learn how to better communicate their feelings and emotions and so the hadley team then focused particularly this year through their wildcat time on using that advisory period to um and that data that they were collecting through panorama um to just develop an enter you know more enthusiastic approach again really tellered for middle school students i was just thinking our our two middle
school board members may have thoughts about that but they um use that to try to drive more of that middle school perspective but keeping those common themes and ability to communicate very strong they continually adjusted those lessons based on topics that were coming to them actually directly from some of the student feedback when they did a winter check-in during this school year which was great because um that also brought them to more lessons in terms of thinking about diversity and inclusion and then um they incorporated those themes throughout um throughout the month um one of the main focuses that that mandy and the other people who i talked to here at hadley said was you know they were really looking to what do students need asking and getting that information from students and that's something
that they will definitely continue as we step into um this next school year and then this is um something that many of you are familiar with but it is uh really worth noting in terms of how we continue our work with ptac and as jeff pointed out with our behavior intervention committee um combined because um coming out of that strategic plan committee and you may remember even from the last um update that i shared with you about social emotional learning a couple of weeks ago one of the things that continues to be strong um in fact it it as we've been interviewing new candidates lately i really appreciated the way that marcy conlon has said you know is something that was an initiative for us and has really become a way of how we do
business um as she opens up and shares with um with candidates it really is just so reinforcing to all of us to think about that we want to maintain our focus that this was something we really put an emphasis on in 2017-18 how we were supporting our students and how we were building our co-teaching model to support more students with better differentiation in our instruction and more inclusive practices within the classroom and this continues and one of the really exciting things without you know reading all of these bullet points through one of the really exciting things that we found is that i'm not going to say it wasn't challenging it certainly was but our teachers were motivated to learn ways and as you just heard kind of through cit to learn ways to implement co-teaching
models and think about how they could do this better in those remote settings as well and it was just really energizing and wonderful to see how hard our educators were willing to work and our related service providers as well to figure out different ways that they could incorporate those instructional strategies into different learning environments and then also our paraprofessionals really benefited from the fact that we were able to continue this learning with them and probably it was one of those silver linings of um the time during the pandemic because they already had built that relationship with um dr julie custon and her work and so we were able to use an online platform for our paraprofessionals to continue learning and growing um with uh information that was prepared directly from dr costen and so that
way they could take those things and then learn new strategies to use and implement within the remote learning setting so we were learning while we were flying the plane in that regard but at the same time it was awesome because they gave us so much positive feedback saying oh my gosh this helped me to take those next steps and learn what i really could do to make this effective for student learning and then our recommendations for next year we actually started in june at our leadership conference we had the building leadership teams from all the schools um virtually meet with allie hearn and she just was an amazing guest speaker i put a little i borrowed this right from her website a little bit of information about her work with thousands of educators across the
country the importance of improving social emotional skills promoting the installation of restorative practices within school systems as well as which is big to us the mtss multi-tiered system of support framework to better support the current needs of students and we do spend a lot of time in our at our building meetings and our plc's talking about mtss for literacy and for math but this year we're really going to ramp up our game talking about the social emotional interventions that can be delivered starting with universal tier 1 the whole class and then kind of like that pyramid less students but higher need as you go towards the top of that pyramid and working on our toolkit for those interventions we spent a couple of hours with her on june 4th like i said the d41 leadership
team just kind of connecting talking about connections and reflecting on the year and then possible action steps um not not right there and then specific strategies but our action steps for the year of working with ali and then when we come back um with our staff in august 12th our first institute day she's going to spend half the day with the elementary staff and the other half of the day with the junior high staff and really going to talk about the need for social emotional learning in addition to or along with the academic learning and then really talking about the specific levels of support that we could offer and then throughout the school year next year 2021 2022 our school improvement plan days those half days they'll reflect um our commitment to it as she
she called them clinic clinicians clinicians and her work for our social workers and school psychologists and people on our student support teams and she'll be working with them through those days and they'll come back and work with our teams as well so starting on june 4th with our leadership conference or like we called it our ad we used to call our ad team retreat and um kind of working throughout the year to those half days really really getting down to the people that are front line like those social workers and the school psychologists and then i didn't tell laurel oh you just added a slide and then um i told laurel that i added some color to this last slide because i got so excited because jeff just really made this life beautiful ptac is
back in the past we met in the spring this year we plan to hold fall winter and spring ptac meetings and incorporating those behavior interventions into one of the meetings as well this will provide us the opportunity to share timely updates um for our social emotion support and really importantly that staff professional development and with our areas of focus second step updates instead of us sharing this with the parents and the teachers that join our team after spring break we're going to start in the fall where we intend to take it so concepts and pacing with student and parent feedback hadley's social emotional learning support the differentiated instruction and intervention tiers based on student need and that's a huge thing student need drives our decisions and then our cpi and crisis teams as well talking
about what a crisis team in an elementary and a junior high building actually does and what they're there for and then to me most importantly that professional development with allie hearn and home school communication and that homeschool communication will be really ramping up on parent involvement with the second step program and i'm sure maybe panorama as well for the middle school right i just would add to that that our parent representative who attended was lovely to attend with jeff and me last week she did indicate that probably that homeschool communication will be what she sees as the most important whether the elementary or middle school so that parents can feel connected and understand what we are putting in place and what some of even though the language or um another word for that be uh
just the the way that the terminology that we're using how we're talking about it based on her feedback we know that when our la mats and literacy coaches create and help teachers with their slides for the curriculum night in august we're also going to make sure that we talk about the social emotional curriculum as well that it's it's that third tier right up there i shouldn't say tear that third that third component up there with the academic and the behavioral math and literacy that we'll talk about that as well and the importance will be conveyed to parents then as well that's it well done any very good thank you both um questions or comments from the board i was just going to say i think this is very timely considering the results of the survey
we just saw from our parents i wrote it down yeah thank you i wrote myself a note that the dots are starting to be connected between what we're hearing from parents what we're seeing in kids and our plan for professional development hopefully the board is starting to see all the initiatives um connect and you know that our committees are connecting more um and that doing an even better job at that can come to our strategic plan process it's exciting when everything starts to make sense because we have a lot of rich committees that do work but i feel like the dots are starting to connect and and and we can see the relationship between committees and and the work happening for kids very good well uh justice edda yes um so i i just want
to thank you both for your commitment to um this work and um jeff i know you've presented on it so many times so i appreciate the passion that you bring to it and your persistence and and how you've pivoted the focus of ptac over time um it's really exciting to see where it's headed and as a parent of a fourth grader i i see those second step lessons come home and i i can't remember the song now but there was a song song over and over again at my house about some problem solving steps that was really helpful i'm sorry for that by the way i'm not sure if we should apologize okay it was great um and i guess my question is do we see this as kind of we're ending our services with
dr costen and that perhaps our engagement with allie hearn will be a multi-year thing like dr costume was or are we still continuing with dr costen as well so our continuation um had been through that online platform um for us for our paraprofessionals um primarily it wasn't not um a contract as we had done you know previously was very um limited in that regard but i think very rich in the sense that it did continue to connect those dots like you were talking about and particularly for that population of peer professionals who then could be valued in the work that they were doing during this time um we are not you know presenting anything in terms of a multi-year continuation with with dr julia custom but rather the work that we're doing with ellie hearn
um and i think um we talked a little bit about those uh those things that we're looking forward to doing through that social emotional learning presentation on down the road that will be something that we'll keep evaluating as we come to the you know the end of the school year and so on but there are some things that are more long-term objectives in terms of our thinking with ellie hearn is that did that answer that i don't yeah it's just i think it shows that our needs have changed yeah in the course of the progression of doing the work around um inclusion and now the definition is starting to get broader and so um ali can help move us to that next place right i guess i just it's the work is continuing i guess
that's where i'm trying to hedge between but it's a different focus in terms of how it's continuing and where we're going with with ellie hearn thank you anyone else very good okay jeff laurel thank you for your work for your presentation okay we will move on then to some uh an action item a consent agenda are there any items board members would like to be removed from the consent agenda to be considered separately hearing none may have a motion to approve the consent agenda which includes employment recommendations and resignations on the personnel report the school district payment order from may 19 through june 23 2021 the foia report from may 19 through june 23rd 2021 the may 2021 financial reports and the open meeting minutes of may 24th 2021 the open and closed meeting minutes
