Carrie Kim >> here. >> Perez >> here. Moore >> here. Spurlock >> here. >> Rosen >> here. >> Johnson >> here. >> All right, we have no public comment. So, we are going to move to the superintendent update. Um, just a note that we will not be discussing this with the board. So, um, we won't have any time. We will not do questions and things like that. If you have questions or concerns, please email them to Patrick and or Gret. >> Great. So, first we're going to start off by last week started our Black History Month. Um, this is a very special Black History Month. This is 100 years of honoring Black History Month. And so we wanted to start off by each board member to receive a goodie bag. Inside your goodie bag, you
have several gifts and surprises um honoring a 100red years of Black History Month. Throughout the district, we already started celebrating. We have several pictures being um sent in from our schools of some of the celebrations that are already taking place. We are now in the process of trying to capture all of the events that will continue to take place throughout the month um celebrating art, music, lessons, and things like that that we can send invites out to each of the board members. So, if your schedule allows, we would love for you to stop by and be part of those activities taking place. Very exciting month to just kind of celebrate the past, the present, and the foundation for the future throughout the district. And so, next, um, we know that, um, in the recent national
events have raised a lot of questions, um, in our community. Um, and please know that we take this very serious um, as a community and really keeping our schools safe. And so for tonight, part of the update, we want to briefly walk you through some of our safety protocols that are already in place across the district. And so we have Dr. starts um up at the front and she's going to share how our schools are responding to some of the concerns. And so at this point I'm going to turn it over to Dr. Starks. >> Thank you, Mr. Wilson. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Um I just wanted to take some time to share an overview of some of our safety protocols. Um, I do want to emphasize that this is an overview
and not intended to be an exhaustive list of all of our practices and protocols um that we have in place. So, I'll start out by sharing that we do have comprehensive safety protocols in place. Uh, these protocols are reviewed um regularly and practiced by our administrators and our staff. And for the past few years, we have utilized the standard response protocol that was developed by the I Love You guys Foundation. Uh these protocols are designed to deal with a wide variety of situations. Um including uh threats on or near campus or also um in the community at large. Uh, additionally we Okay, additionally, this is dangerous giving me this. Um, additionally, uh, we have established practices for managing visitors to our campus. Um, that includes law enforcement. Um, should any, um, a staff person encounter
an individual who is not a staff uh, person or a student, they are to direct them immediately um, to the main office. Um, and lastly, I'll share that we have a designated point person um at the district office and we also have a central office safety team um where we are available to support schools um immediately including on site um if necessary uh which we have done in the past. Um next I'll talk about how do we respond? So as um Mr. Robinson mentioned over the past several days, we received questions about how school staff should um respond and manage potential encounters. So, we thought it'd be helpful to walk through what the SRP looks like in practice. Um, one of the things SRP does is that it allows staff to act quickly and bring
everyone inside of the buildings if there is a potentially concerning situation. Also, uh the SRP alerts which are delivered immediately through our Raptor system. Um staff receive the notifications right away and they can respond consistently. Um our staff practice these drills on a regular basis and have utilized these protocols in numerous situations uh over the past three years. And lastly, I would like to share some important information for our families. We've included some of this important information on um oh yes on this slide and um it's um also includes information related to procedures for immigration enforcement u personnel. This information is on our website and has been shared in previous communications. >> So thank you Dr. Starks. Um, and we recognize a desire for more visible reassurance from the community and we just want the
community to know that our safety plan is real, active, and consistent. And we are currently working on an FAQ to address some of the questions that we have recently received from the community and we will share that out soon. So, please be on the lookout for that. But in the meantime, we truly appreciate the community's partnership and really just keeping our schools safe for all. So, thank you. >> Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. >> All right. 7.1 transformational goal area update. >> So, we are excited to bring up our middle school team. We have some visitors here. Welcome back, Nick. We'll wait for you, Nick. So, don't rush. >> We should allow to start early, >> not to draw attention to you, Nick. It's fine. >> So, we have our middle school team coming
up just to provide an update to celebrate some of the work that is taking place um at the middle school and then just to provide an update on some of the work that will be taking place throughout the remainder of the year. >> We can get some more chairs. Nope, we're good. >> Promotes brevity. >> All right. Well, good evening and thank you for the opportunity to share with you uh this uh middle school updates tonight. Really looking forward to share. Um with you. >> All right. You're good. Thank you. All right. So, as you know, like my name is Lisa Leon. Yes, it's right there schools. Nick Philipy, principal of Julian. >> Michelle Capio, director of student wellness. April Mori, principal bricks. >> We're here, but also we're representing a lot of people who
actually have done and showcase this work. We're excited and have an opportunity to share this with you, but also we want to know that that it will be uh almost impossible to bring everybody here who has participated and contributed. So today we're going to give you an update about our schedule uh process so far, the advisory career expiration uh middle school connection update and then also opportunity to answer any of the questions that you might have. So the some of the updates highlights of our student learning experiences um is that we actually are committed to really design design for all as part of our transformational goal where we are actually looking into the middle school redesign. When we looking about middle school resign, we're looking about those student experiences that they are actually guided by
your principles and best practices such as defined by the association for middle level education for equity policy and the stable education u mandates and expectations and then with that but overall I think it's very important to highlight that when we say about designing for students we're looking for those experiences that they are responsive, challenging, empowering, equitable and engaging. Those are spaces where the students can see themselves, they feel valued, they feel seen, they feel their voice matters and the system is supporting that that experience where they actually are empowered to produce and they have the access that they need and they feel motivated into their journey in our middle schools. And with that, we want to share with you some of the celebrations that we have. And not too brag, but we are but we
are the champions. We are the uh are we're very fortunate and very proud of our students. Uh they uh have like really uh done a fantastic job uh in their basketball, the girls and boys basketball teams. They we have got the uh JB and varsity conference champs. This is a group of 12 to 15 teams competing in in this region and we're very fortunate to have the staff who is very committed to support students and really highlighting uh the importance of of this work and really ensuring that they have that experience as we decide as we define as you can see their names are there and definitely we want to giving a shout out for coaches but also our students and families for this success. >> Woohoo. This is another piece in terms of if
you were in the building when we got the panorama data, you heard me screaming down the hallways. We had a huge movement in middle school. I think we've been waiting to see this where have a little bit of movement and traction. We've been um not stagnant, but it's been about the same for uh the last couple years. And so now we're finally seeing those huge gains. And you see at the right like 14% up that school safety almost at 60%. This is really great news for our middle schools and something to celebrate. Now, as we celebrate, we also need to drill down and talk about different groups within um this data. So, if you click to the next slide, we're going to talk a little bit about three different subgroups. So, our special education status,
we want to make sure we look at also how are our kids with our IEPs doing. And you'll see that gray means stable, orange means a little below, and if you see a blue, it means above. So we do have one area in school safety that's just a little below. But overall what we see with our our students with IEPs are having a similar experience to the overall group. When we look at free and reduced lunch, we see a little bit of a different story with our reduced price. That's a little below. But again, um for our free, and I don't mean to bring elementary to middle, but this is a big win for our middle schools because in a lot of our elementaryaries, those students are feeling like they belong less in a much
deeper way. by middle school, some of those gaps have lessened. So, um that is a positive thing. Still work to do with that reduced price. And then the last slide, if we look at race, um this is a little bit more varied. Um the lowest point are around sense of belonging with our Asian students. Um and you can see in some other areas too. And then our highest point is that uh teacher student relationship for our Hispanic students. and so celebrations alongside areas and room for growth. But overall, I would say um it just shows uh all the work that's happening to try to continue to um move things forward. You're not going to see the drill down that I get to see, but when you look at students reporting less fights, the bullying online
going way down, we don't always know that to be true, but our students are reporting that to be true. So, that's a really big win. So, we've been um over the past two years, especially looking at the expectations that we've set, our scheduling, our programming, lots of different things um to design for all and some of those things that we think are making a true difference um in that Panorama data in that sense of belonging, but also um seeing that we have really expanded the time that students are spending with their core subjects um as well as uh their first elective choice, right? Um but spending that time um really getting enriched and challenged going back to that um descriptor that we want from our middle schools. Um we also have access of our field
um for social time. I know that has been a huge change for our students at Julian and having productive use of that time during the middle of the day um to do some structured activities as well as our PTO I know at our campus at least gave us some more um uh equipment to use and so there's really actually um a very safe um environment that students can use um productively to get that energy and movement. um our tiered supports. Both of our campuses have actually seen um with our win time students who um for at the beginning of the year um were recommended for tier 2 supports and our teachers have done such an amazing job that this round they're actually even graduating some of those students back to tier one. And because of
that structure, students aren't having to go through big schedule changes at that time of the day. they just move to a different classroom and go back to a structure we started the year with, right? So, there's less of this feel that like, oh, I have to give something up. You don't. Um, you're just going to the place where you get what you need now. Um, and so it has less student impact as far as like, uh, the sense of belonging or on their whole schedule, but a great student impact on their achievement. Um, which has been a great celebration from our schedule. Um and then also um having that cross-campus time to collaborate. Um our teachers are coming together during times of collaboration um on a daily basis. Um they are still using that time
greatly um and something that we have um accessed and leveraged um to make some of these changes. I thought you were going to be the first. Uh so when we're talking about our uh scheduling and our opportunities uh as we think about next school year already, uh what we have done so far as we have moved up our elective uh selection timeline. So families uh have already received that information uh back before winter break. Uh we're in the process of now looking at all those elective selections and completing our analysis. We will be uh confirming our master schedule structure for next year and doing the whole process of working with power school to build the schedule load the students uh with a timeline uh that'll allow us to have a real good sense of where
things are before the school year ends where unlike last year when we were revamping everything g given the committee like the it was it was getting down to the wire there in August. So, uh, the timeline is really, uh, moved up. That'll provide more space for us to, um, balance our classes and make sure that things are, um, where they need to be. And then, of course, as we're thinking about next school year, we also always think about our incoming uh, sixth grade families. And, uh, we were just finalizing our timeline and getting ready, all of our communications ready. Uh generally uh this is our upcoming timeline for welcoming our incoming families. We've got our uh communications that will go out. We'll have panels with the students. We'll have a virtual orientation with the family.
We'll have student le tours of the building like we've done in the past. Um we'll have our middle schools connect middle school connection opportunity in August. The dates have been identified August 18th through the 20th. And then we coordinate with our respective PTOs for welcome back um events either in August or September. So all those um conversations and coordinations are in the works. So you can see it's a lot of a really a lot of work coming together into one space and synergize and support each other with that. uh as well we are actually now that we have defined like a structure where we're now looking into that space how that space looks like how the space has to change to meet those uh expectations that we know about what's best for students. So with
that one area that we are evaluating and defining or redefining is the area of advisory. So uh we have this is SLI slide that we have sh previously shared with you. So just letting you know that we are in that in that middle section right now where we are actually develop in the process of working with our team in developing what the advisory structure should look like and then also looking about meaningful resources that are developmental and the high interest for students. And then with that also going through an adoption process and then with that you can see the future work ahead of us which actually is going into the implementation phase for that. So I want to also give a great shout out to all of our our our committee. We had a presentation
from both middle schools coming together into one space and really doing an amazing job and working together but also having fun together and really thinking what's best for students. I know if you're ever bored, that's a committee to visit. We have a lot of fun together and I feel like sometimes we miss the work of like why we're in it. And this is a group of adults really focused on how do we make sure all of our kids have a trusted adult of middle? How do we make sure we're talking about the social emotional? How do we make sure we're addressing digital citizenship? So, these five W's of how we're doing the work have been our anchor and it's been really it's been fun. It's been interesting and they're tough conversations to figure out are
we really reaching these goals for each and every one of our students. So that's the the book that we're using that it looks like we brought copies for for everyone here and it's it's kind of guiding everything that we do and and those are the five W's. Um so leading on that we've already done um an initial go to the next slide. We did um a survey with our community, our staff, and our students around social emotional learning, which was great. We had a great turnout. Over 200 families responded um which I think is great and gave us a ton of information about what they think about previous implementation. Our question I have graphed up here tonight is whether or not we believe that schools play a central role in social emotional learning. and our
staff and community really believe that five means we really do believe that that uh school plays a central role. The students aren't quite as sure. They're more in the middle. They're kind of not so which makes sense developmentally, but it's nice to see the community and staff have a similar vision for focusing on this with our students. So, we're going to use that information to now guide how do we find the right curriculum or resources to meet the students where they are. And um one of those resources social institute is uh the team's already looked at. We looked at it for digital digital citizenship but actually it's great social emotional learning too because you talk about group chats. What do you do if you're stuck in a group chat? So we're it's not just the
digital part, it's also the social emotional. Um, and then next steps, what our our big goal next year is to create a plan just for staff around how do we become great adviserss? And so, how do we learn about adolescent development? How do we make sure we are ready and prepared that when we roll out the following year that we all know what it means to be an adviser to our students? And all of that work is being driven again by those uh five W's. As you can see, it's a lot of level setting, a lot of really like coming together and and and calling what it is and what it's not. And then with that actually providing the resources, the opportunity for staff to to learn and then also for all of us uh
learning and growing together into that. So our next area of of uh of uh opportunity to share with you is about our work in career exploration and has been as as well like a great community to work with. Actually they met today and there's as you can see representation from both uh middle schools and they were actively working in really defining this space as well and really make it meaningful and impactful for the students to support their choices and their understanding about what career uh means and college as well. So with that as well you have seen this before but also we want to highlight where we are in this process in our timeline. We have uh brought up a team. We have actually met expectations from the state. We have a get our school
links resource as we are using that resource that's also a line is the same that the high school is using and and then with that also we're working in cadence of training. uh we have our students have completed the inventory career exploration uh survey inventory and then with that we have reviewed that data and right now we're in the process of actually planning our career day. Career day is uh something that we want to revamp something that we want to bring uh uh to a higher level in both of the middle schools. This is actually the the the uh ranking of the careers uh that actually our students have chosen as you can see Julia and Brooks uh arts as number one arts entertainment design number two help healthcare human services number three management entrepreneurship
and you can see the difference here in Julian and Brooks where Julian chose digital technology as number four and Brooks number five and then the hospitality and tourism as well that play a different place or interesting that actually these are there are actually more but these are the ones that actually they were very uniform about the careers then with that we also want to acknowledge that it was 94% of students completing this and we're still actively reaching out to our students to make sure that we reach out to those students who haven't been able to complete this for whatever reasons that they were maybe out of school for the day or not available but we are still working on that and that data is going to be very important because this has helped us out
to figure it out how does the day is going to look like how what is really we're very intentional about designing for students we now we know what they what we need to bring so with that I think that's uh we have here the two dates that we have selected one for Julian and one for Brooks we're working together so it's going to be the not necessarily the same experience because each school is unique unique but is standard in the way that the what is presented that how we're coming together. You can see the structure of the day is pretty much from 12:54 to the end of the day there will be four rotations that the students will be participating on and exploring with an opportunity to reflect that for 6 7 and 8. And
with that uh we want to take this opportunity to actually invite our community to really to become a presenter. If you know somebody who is has a a way to show or will be a good person to bring in to uh share their knowledge and their expertise and their engagement with our students. Please like send them our way. We're more than happy to accommodate for them. There's a QR code so people can sign in as well and we'll be reaching out to them as well to prepare them for that and I have this as uh to become a even better successful event that we have previously had. So with that we'll we continue working through that process and then also we are going to be preparing our students for that experience because it's not only
going there have experience it's actually preparing to have the right mindset the lens about what do I need to know uh so I can take better advantage of this experience so there's some units that that we're preparing for that to prepare students for this experience as well and then from from there as we are completing that process we are also working with our team to build a three-year uh scope and sequence for for our students as we continue building on our learning as we move forward. And then uh just uh this is nothing new. this middle school connection coming along the way has shared a memo with you as well and we are actually requesting the opportunity to to to get approved the use of these funds and based on that um uh on that
approval we'll have the opportunity this these are the goals the breakdown of overall and then with that uh having to mention like this is we got a participation of 90% of the students like 600 kids like showing up to to this to this this event and then with that uh pending your approval. This is the flyer that we want to share with the community. It's still the same uh process that we have from previous years is three days from the 18th to the 20th and then with that we have the same hours from 9 in the morning to 12:15. uh of staff is super exciting and we're starting already getting uh many people from our community reaching out to us about hey this is going to happen and I I want to set the date
I want to plan vacation and other summer camps as well around it. So um and that's pretty much where where we are. We want to say thank you for your time and we're open for any questions that you may have. >> Thank you guys. This is really great. I also just want to shout out the girls volleyball team at Brooks. >> Um the varsity team is 9 and 10 as of yesterday. >> Um and the girls, from what I understand, the girls JB team is undefeated, which is the first time in the school's history. So celebrate. >> That's awesome. That's great. >> I'll put a plug in for career day. I did it last year. It was a lot of fun. I don't want to brag, but a friend of mine's kid said that I
was the least boring lawyer they I want to get you know high like that might consider joining. >> I did know I did cur day also and I now I want to know if we have the same >> I had the same kid and I was being a >> compensation. >> I will put in an extra plug for folks uh for career day to given arts entertainment and design top level. I I just want to put a plug out there for anyone who is in the field that branches out from traditional expectations of what arts, entertainment and design are. So for example, Adler Planetarium has a space visualization lab that is all about design art but also mixed with science. So if folks can come in to give a picture of a broad view of
what you can love art and science and still have a fabulous career where you get to do both. Um, so the more we can kind of get that out to folks, the better. >> Thank you. >> And for people looking to sign up, it was in your weekly wrap up. There was a link. >> It's been there for a couple weeks. >> I have a question and this may Did I interrupt anybody? This you may not be able to answer this question now and that's fine. You can get back to me. So I see the budget. So last year's middle school connect was the first year we did it and I see >> second >> I mean second >> yeah second >> second >> I see the budget having a full understanding of what goes
into middle school connection and what you need to do but how does this year's budget compare to last year and even the year before but I feel like the year before is not a fair assessment >> it's actually this the same the same budget and we're trying to also cut some some of the resources as well but so far we're projecting to to have the same we have ti tied the system really well. >> Okay. >> So that's what we are looking at so far >> and and my recollection is almost like it was very high participation. >> Yeah. >> 80 or 90. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> What and from year one to year two the participation significantly grew because I think people knew that it was something you should attend and it was wellreceived.
>> Yeah. I continue to get really positive feedback like overwhelmingly. So >> the exciting thing about this is like this upcoming year then we have like a full school cohort that has that has gone through that >> and we have seen the difference from the uh people or students who have gone through this students who have not. this really the opportunity to really uh have an opportunity to to prepare h for that and have like a transition in a way that that you feel comfortable that feel connected has make a big difference. Uh we have two grade levels right now that have been through that and that you can see those relationships with with staff and you can see in the panorama data that the sense of belonging is there. So the rising eighth graders
have gone. So you have a whole school full >> We will next year. >> You said it, but I want this. >> Okay. >> Thank you. >> Appreciate it. >> I just wanted to say on that note, thank you for all this work. From the time that we've started on the board to now, all the work that has gone to this by everyone who's sitting up there, all the committees that were listed up there, it's making an a difference that you can see not just in the visiting the schools, but in the numbers and in what we're doing. and the impact you're having is is great and I really appreciate that. >> Appreciate you for the opportunity. >> All right. Good night, guys. >> All right. Motion approve the consent agenda. >> I move the
board of education park district 97 approve the consent agenda as presented. >> Second Ros. >> Yes. Perez, >> yes. >> Herie, >> yes. >> Burlock, >> yes. >> Kim, >> yes. >> Johnson, >> yes. >> More. >> Yes. >> All right. 9.1 discussion items. Oak Park Township IGA. >> Excuse me. Sorry, I'm missing a page. >> No, no, no, no. >> We have Dr. Loftton coming up. >> Good evening. Um, I want to first acknowledge the on the rise from the back led by Dominique Hickman. Thank you for being here from the township. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Um so we have submitted um an intergovernmental agreement that um deals with the expansion of our programming beyond what what we have started in the sixth school. So that's what will be up for action
in two weeks. Um so we go to the oh um so we just want to give some feedback um so I'm sorry some feedback but some background on um where the programs are currently um where those six spaces are. started about two years ago I think Dominique at Whittier um and it has grown exponentially since. So um we understand the township was initially not kind of set up for this rapid expansion but are grateful for um what they've done in our elementary schools and including um Hatch and um Irving who were recently added this year and then um Boys in the Rise and expansion at the middle schools um and I think our oldest programs have been at the middle schools um so really excited for the work that's done there. um with 170 students
being served overall. Um and then this is just a sampling of some of the topics that are covered um during that 8 to 12 week session. Um so the elementary school topics range from um various issues around self-love, bullying, self-awareness. Um with our middle school topics go delging a little bit deeper into um mental health, especially as it relates to black and brown children. Um, and there are a little bit of variance between the boys and the girls, but really important topics that we want to make sure um that we lay a foundation for for our students. So, um, essentially what the intergovernmental agreement does is formalize this relationship in terms of the expansion. So, we know that on the rise programs have been operating for quite some time in our middle schools, but as
we expand to even more elementary schools hopefully, um we want to make sure that we um are thoughtful about what that means in terms of um obviously financing that, but then having um just conversations around what it means to expand over time. So, um the established expansion cost would be 6,000 per 8 to 12 week session. Um so, we would start with the six. So that would be um covered but then any programs beyond the six that we already have established would cost the 6,000 um per 8 to 12 week session and then we would look at every year to see where we would go next. Um and for us um we're really excited about the fact that it supports our approach of park graduate holistically well to mention and um the work that's done
is really impactful for our students and we've heard great feedback. Um so we hope to continue um the work and hopefully move forward with the IG for approval at the February 24th. >> Emily, can you clarify when you say each session? Do you mean for each school or semester? Like what is the definition of session? That's 6,000 >> 8 to 12 week sessions. So um so any school beyond these that are already established, it would cost 6,000 per 8 to 12 week session. Okay. >> You have a question? >> No. I just wanted to see what schools were Well, I can't >> um Yes. Which schools were covered in which because there's the potential for expansion. >> So, we don't see >> Lincoln man. Okay. I just want to say I'm really excited for that
we're expanding. I know we've all been pushing for this. >> Um, you know, my daughter knew it in sixth grade and uh she the stuff she would bring home and like the conversations they had. I just >> I'm really excited for this to be brought to market. >> Yeah. Um, and we've had the pleasure to meet with Dominic on a week and team on a weekly basis on not weekly, monthly basis. Um, and so we've, um, have an opportunity always to troubleshoot and make sure that we're hopefully supporting the program. So, um, we're excited about it, too. >> Is the Oh, sorry. Is the attendance because it's newer at the elementary schools than it is at the middle schools? So, is the intend is the attendance at the elementary schools like continuing to grow? comparing
it's it's apples and oranges, but you see what I'm you kind of get what I'm asking about in terms of the attendance at the middle schools. >> Um, so in terms of more students, >> like are the students at the elementary schools is are the numbers of students participating continuing to grow given it's been at the middle schools a little bit longer. That's a steadier number. Um, I'm just I guess I'm trying to gauge the interest at the at the >> elementary schools. Yeah, I would say so, but I tried not to. Um, Dominique, would you mind speaking to how um attendance is growing at the elementary school level? Um, well, we saying all the girls show up every week. So, we send a consistent number, but we also had cut off numbers for the
group because we only could take 15 girls in one room and currently at Irving has 15 at capacity. So there are girls who are on the wait list but unfortunately because they're fifth grade we won't touch them until they touch um go to six square middle school. So yeah thanks I just wanted to say thank you Dominique. This is amazing. I'm so happy that it's expanding. Um I've been hearing about the weight list for a long time. So before my girls even got to sixth grade I was like how can I get on this list? Um, so thank you so much and uh yeah, thank you so much. >> One more question. Sorry, >> I'll get our letter. >> You got to catch me. Um, what can we do about the waiting list? >> Yeah,
it's a great question. >> Um, I would imagine it's about capacity of the team.
