001Community School Corporation Board of Trustees regular meeting. Please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance. Please join me in a moment of reflection. Thank you. Communications, commendation, BHS wrestlers. Ms. Murphy? Yes, thank you very much. We have our three state champion wrestlers here with us tonight for our commendation. At first, I'd like Trayvon Ducking, your 113-pound state champion, head on up there. Stand right up there, bud. Turn around and face the front. And then we have Braylon Reynolds at 144, state champion. And Case Bell, your two-time state champion at 120 this year for the Brownsburg Bulldogs. How about that? All right, so Trayvon, that was a pretty cool celebration that made it all over the news. What were you thinking? Did you plan that? Did you think about it beforehand? Yeah, I had it planned
002about a week before. That if you won, you were going to do the whole... Yeah. What inspired that? Sean O'Malley. Okay, that's what I was thinking. And you said also, I asked you when you came, who came here with you or your parents here, and you said, well, kind of. Yeah, the Reynolds family over there. Kind of like my second mom and dad. So you guys are pretty close. You can hear you talking about all the things that you've done. And you are a two-time state champion, one in your freshman year and now in your sophomore year. So you were not necessarily the leader. What does that feel like for next year when you're the junior, what that looks like? Because you've had some great leaders in your time at Brownsburg so far. Yeah. Coming
003from a team my freshman year with some leaders like Braylon Reynolds, Jay Concadet, Gunnar Henry, those guys setting big standards for Brownsburg. and who we are here at Brownsburg. And it kind of just like gave me like a natural light to inspire the freshmen that we have this year and make them want to win like we do and just pass it down to them. So well, congratulations. So we can expect that next year. We're all gonna win. Okay, I'm just gonna put that out there coach. Okay. All right Braylon at 144 you were third your freshman year second your sophomore year and won the state championship Your junior year. What was the difference? What got you over the hump? A lot of things for me, it's just about improvement. So a lot of the time
004I go in the room and it's not necessarily about winning, but it's about just getting better. And I'm a very sore loser. I don't like to lose. So a lot of it's getting in the room and just pushing myself more and more and get over that edge, get a little better every year. Now, Trayvon introduced your parents, but yet those are your parents, right? We just want to make sure that we want to introduce them. Also, you kind of have a legendary story at the state championship because you were down 4-0. You hurt your ankle, then what happened? Yeah, so I kind of go out there with a lot of emotions. And that first period I get taken down and I just hear my ankle pop. And there's a lot of adrenaline that goes into
005that. You don't really expect that to happen. You kind of go in there confident. When that happens, I got up and I was like, well, I do a lot of hard things. This isn't one of the hardest things I've had to go through. So I got up and I looked at Smiley. He smacked me in the face. I was like, all right, I'm ready to go. Let's do this. And I got up and figured it out. Well, congratulations on a state championship. That's awesome. And as a junior, you're a shopping collegeist? Yes, ma'am. So when do you think you're going to decide? Classified. That's okay. That's okay. So Case Bell, two-time state champion. Pretty excited to have you back here. Who's along with you? That's my mom and dad, Tracy Bell and Brian Bell. And
006I remember waving to them during the state championship, yeah, and seeing them every year up in the stands. That's a pretty exciting day. What would surprise people the most about how you prepare for wrestling meets? I'd say it's just doing the stuff that usually normal people or normal wrestlers don't want to do. So the stuff outside of the room and how you live your life, whether that's in school, which honestly I haven't done the best job at, but improving on that. And yeah, just things people don't want to do. So a lot has been said about Coach Snyder, Coach Smiley, how good all your kids are. What's the difference between wrestling against these people in practice and other people don't have that? I'd say when I go out and compete, it's just night and day.
007I get these guys in the room, so I'm overly prepared when I go out and wrestle normal competition. What can we expect from you next year? Freshman, sophomore state championship? Yeah, three times. That's the plan. Coach, you want to come up and say anything about these guys? I'll need you to do it on the mic, though. Either. Coach Smiley want to come up? So Coach Smiley, Coach Snyder are going to come up. That was a pretty big day, and you've had some big days, but tell me a little bit about these three. Just a really special group that we continue to have, and I think it really goes back to the last several years with guys like Jake Hockaday and Gunnar Henry leading the right way. It's kind of like when we lost Brayton Lee,
008there was like a chunk of time in there where we didn't have someone to... really replace that like energy and positivity and I think these guys a lot of our guys have just done a phenomenal job. So I know coach Smiley I'll let him talk in a second, but there's so many times we're just like standing at practice and we tell these guys this like we just watch the way that they're training the way they care about each other and we'll look at each other and go nobody else has this and it didn't we didn't get it done this year lost by three and a half points, but There's no other group we'd want to go into it with. It wasn't for a lack of effort. When we say they do everything right, that is
009in the hallways, that's in the classroom, that's in the locker room, that's in the wrestling room. Just really proud of the young men they are. We need everybody talking, but just listening to these three guys talk, that's why we are who we are. Having great student-athletes like this, they lead. They, by example, every day. So it's just a joy to work with them. They're the best versions of themselves every day. We're proud of them. We're proud of our program. So it's a lot of fun. All right, let's hear it for all three of them. We'll get their certificates. Dr. Dixon. Brownsburg Community School Corporation certificate accommodation is hereby presented to Trayvon Case Braylon for being the IHSAA 2026 state champion wrestler in their respective weight classes from the Board of School Trustees. Congratulations, guys. All
010right, we'll get them their certificates and parents can take pictures. Although you have lots of pictures of them with trophies and things, you can get a picture of this if you want. Good job, guys. He doesn't want to stay? Thank you. Congratulations. They want to. Their parents just won't let them. That was it. 012are thanks to the generosity of the BCSC staff and the payroll deduction program. The incredible award and district excellent award grant applications were submitted before spring break and announcements about them will be made in May. Thank you. Operations update, Mr. Hacker. Thank you very much. I have quite a few things to share with you this evening. I will do my best to be somewhat efficient in these slides. So first up, kind of go through a little bit of construction. Very exciting at the high school. Really, the first picture up there you'll see is kind of the main space, the old space. I will call this the old version of the high school area that just recently got back. So to kind of get your bearings really where we're at is... the call the Bulldog stairwell
013and the main stairwell by the main cafeteria we kind of be over just on this side this would be like the where the school resource officer office is the main office door 1 door 8 over here it's the old cardio room and you can see that there were some other spaces in here locker rooms and such and really this entire space will look completely different as it does right now. And we have not moved completely into it yet. We will wait to do that over the summer to start next school year. But it is a space and I'll show you what the difference looks like here in a second. I also want to talk about here. This is the area of the south of the main gym. So main gym would really be in this
014spot right here. And this used to be what we call the PE hallway. We had all the lockers for the PE. in this spot and then we have the locker rooms here. But this is really the entire area that's just south of the gym that had not been touched in any of the recent renovations and kind of show what the difference looks like with it updated. So again, the old cardio room in this space and locker rooms that were associated really is the old weight room. And even for that, probably the space, Dr. Gay, the old pool, I believe. But you can see that it has now become the TV studio suite, TV broadcasting area that captures the entire program. It is now more in the central portion of the building. It's on the south
015end right now. Once we move here and again, the south end will become the area for robotics and Project Lead the Way as that program continues to expand. But this is now in the central location for us to continue to utilize the broadcasting, live broadcasts that go on with all of our athletic events and such. just puts us more in that center spot, as well as you have the media control room. That has always been there, and now we can access that with the additional space. So we've got the TV studio, the control room as the live broadcast is going on for the announcements. We've got the green screen area, some storage, and then we have the two classrooms that are available. And then here in the middle, you have the office for our teachers.
016We've got additional storage. We have a podcast area as well. So again, as this... program continues to evolve. We wanted the facility to ensure that matches again. This was all items that were pre approved really in the 2023 project associated with the senior academy and field house. We're just now finishing this up the other portion of that. You can see that the old hallway here, the P hallway, we've actually shifted that to where it's now adjacent to the gym. Um, and we have these are now boys and girls. Um, volleyball locker rooms here as well as we have the locker rooms for our visitors as well as coaches offices and storage so all this area was under for really for the entire school year just came back to us and Just kind of show the
017difference there. This is a little blown-up version as well just so you can see but again all this is now back to us we are going to be utilizing these spaces the locker rooms before we will move into these spaces, but just so you can see what that finalized version looks like This is the TV broadcasting area. So this is the control room here. This is where eventually we will build the entire set. The green screen will be here again. It's not in place now because it is now still in the current classroom. That'll all transition. We didn't buy all new equipment for here. We're going to move that because it's still good for some savings there. We've got the two classrooms that are on each side of the control room area. And again, you
018can see that really just kind of a nice big space. that we can utilize for whether it be student desks, computers, different things there. That's a very, very flexible space to meet the needs of the program. So the again, this is one classroom, the one on the other side of control room is just identical to this. But it's really, really nice to see. Quite honestly, I walked in and I was lost because it is completely different to navigate, but pretty, pretty fun to go in and see all the carpet and finishes take place. We know our teachers are very excited to get in this space and we will hire a new teacher for next year for the tv broadcasting program that will help us open that so again a very very nice space moving on
019to another area there we this is actually a slide i shared at the march board meeting i included that because i was just so impressed with the pictures that the construction group provided this is the rendering provided by the architect of the additional classroom space of the band orchestra area. And this is the actual picture that we took last week. And I'm like, my goodness, it looks exactly the same. So we are building what it looks like. Pretty exciting. So again, you can see as we outfitted, this is actually the old band guard room. One large space. We've now shifted into adding the additional kind of miscellaneous classroom there. It can be used by either band or orchestra. Here in this space on the south end, a little closer to the main office. And we've
020got the mirrors, we've got the acoustical panels again, all set up for a an instrument storage, all set up for a typical classroom for band and orchestra. This is just the other side of that. Again, plenty of space here, plenty of storage for all of the ran out all the the instruments and such that we have in place here. Very, very nice space on the north side. We've got the what we call the band guard room completion. And this was an area this is not a new construction, but we built it knowing that we would have to come back and fill the inside This is not quite 100% finished. Again, it's a space that can be utilized now. But we have essentially some additional acoustic material that will hang from the ceiling called baffles that
021they're just not in yet. And so when those come in in the summer, we will install those. And there will also be carpet on the floor. But we did not install the carpet because we know in order to get up and hang all the baffles, we would ruin the carpet and the flooring system underneath it. So right now we're using it still as it was. We've got a little better acoustical with all the panels and such. You can also see the catwalk up there that allow for the perspective of our directors in order to look down on the percussion, on the guard to make sure that all the formations are correct and we can continue to provide feedback to continue performing well in our competitions as we've been doing so. And again, this is just
022the other side of that. Mirrors and different things. Again, this is a space that will be utilized, really already is utilized every single day. Other spots here, I showed you the new hallway there that's just on the other side of the gym on the south locker rooms. And this really goes from what... what people will consider kind of the old athletic hallway into more of the band orchestra hallway. This will be shut down and badge access throughout the day because the only reason folks should be in and out of here is to access the locker rooms. It is not open like it was in the past where for PE because that is all now in the field house. So these should just be areas that are going to be open up for practice and athletic
023competition. So this is not a spot that will be utilized throughout the day for students to pass through. It will be locked off. And again, these are just the team. area locker rooms it's more of a visiting spot just a spot to change and so usually there's i think there's a white board and stuff in there you can see the difference between that versus one of our home locker rooms this would be boys or girls varsity volleyball and jv as well for the entire program but that's you can see a little bit bigger space for more lockers for all of our kids a spot for them to sit down because this is where they'll keep their stuff all the time Currently under renovation as we shared last time is the varsity gym. Some additional spots
024here you can see the progress that all the all the bleachers are out, all the flooring is up. They're working on continuing to take stuff out. They're adding all the HVAC, new HVAC systems in into the upper mezzanine there and really getting a nice start. They thought this would take about four weeks to get everything cleaned out. We did it in about three. We are in a very tight time frame in order to get it back to us in October and in time for the girls basketball season. But this, I believe, is the south gym. Upstairs, you can see here, this is more the perspective. It is a very, very large space. You can take all those bleachers out and see the two north, or excuse me, two upper gym areas. um with with the
025bottom floor there but a ton of work credit to meyer najim for for getting in there and getting after it and getting stuff done early and every little bit of time helps the closer we can get to getting stuff back installed the uh the better off we will be in meeting that timeline to get girls basketball in place as a reminder this will be shut down for volleyball so boys volleyball which is now girlies girls volleyball in the fall those will have to take place in the field house until this is all back and ready to go. So that's just a quick update on all the construction new spaces that came back to us and some that are currently under still under construction. But before I move to the next portion of the ops update,
026any questions on any of the construction? What's the plan for the north and south? Great question. So north gym, I believe it will be more of a synthetic surface. The south gym will be, or excuse me, I'm backwards. I think south gym will be the synthetic floor. North gym will stay wood. And so still have the same kind of access that we had before with the courts. Adding a synthetic surface to allow the flexibility. So for instance, I know that sometimes tennis will be... They will have been hitting in the field house, but that way that synthetic surface allows them if they have an indoor space. We did not build them an indoor space with the new facility, so it allows that, allows for additional flexibility with pickleball and different things for PE if we
027so needed it, as well as then sometimes the band guard still needs a larger space in that band guard room, and that synthetic surface will be a little bit better for instruments and the flags and the rifles and stuff to get thrown that it's not going to ruin the gym floor. So that's kind of what the plan is for those spaces. Now that we've had time with the new field and with the field house, what kind of feedback are you getting from community members or coaches or parents? Sure. And so, A, I think just, I'm not sure. People are very happy to put it very succinctly. I think that the space, what I really appreciate, first of all, when you walk in and see the entire space full of kids, that's probably when I'm happiest.
028It's really nice to see when you walk in and empty and it's very, very, very nice and a great space. But when it's full of kids working, I think that is when we're very, very proud, most proud of the area. So what's really, really nice, especially in the field house, is just the, you know, the. There's so many different purposes we can use in that space. You know, we had, as the band was practicing for Rose Bowl, they were able to be in that space before, since it was so cold outside. You know, you can have the track and field runners. On the track, we had softball doing workouts. We had baseball with the curtains down, and they were doing some little infield on the additional court while basketball was going on the wood. And
029so, again, we can have so much going on there while it's after school. And we don't have to have so many different sessions like we did, you know, boys practicing after school, girls then coming in at 6 o'clock and then staying late. And so, again, we talk about accessibility, too, and being able to keep our kids involved in these sports and activities. being able to house those individuals after school so no one has to find rides back. We're seeing an increase in the number of participants and again, just all positive things. Did we do it perfectly? I'm not saying you can ever do anything perfectly, but we are very, very proud and not too much negative feedback up to this point. And so I think when folks are in, if there is any negative feedback
030on the field house, it's just that a basketball court, one of those can be a little bit far away from the viewing area. But again, we wanted the multi-purpose use of that space, and the bleachers are really designed with an indoor track meet in mind, so not just basketball. And so that may be a little bit of feedback, but what I will tell you, those who have had the indoor track meets in there could not be more pleased with the viewing. areas that we have and the ability to host a full indoor track meet. I can tell you it's been nothing but positive remarks and we're very, very excited to keep doing that and keeping our kids here and not having to travel all over the state. Is the plan to continue to have gym
031classes in the varsity gym after construction or? No, everybody will be in the field house. Okay, so during the normal school day, there won't be anything going on in the varsity gym should be shut down, which means that should extend the life of that floor. And so one of the reasons that we're in here, I know it's. Seems like it's new, but it's 25 years old. But one of the reasons that it's out of sands is because when you have freshmen in there and baseball on that floor all the time is that, yes, it gets worn out much, much faster than just playing basketball. So the intention here is when we get this gym floor done is that it'll last a little bit longer than the previous 25 years because we are pretty much using
032it for boys and girls basketball only. And volleyball, excuse me. But not PE. Great questions. Okay, I will shift into the next portion of the slide. Again, I'm going to show you a couple of slides that we went through in October, which was really about energy management. And we talked at this time is some of the increases that we were seeing on electricity from 25 going to 26 and adjustments that we had made. And I'm not going to go through all these slides or these bullet points here. But these bullet points really led to some of the adjustments that we looked at from an HVAC stamp, including the temperature ranges. We looked at going from 78 to 72 or 68 to 74, expanding that before. things start kicking on. We also looked at the occupied
033versus unoccupied times when lights are at full strength or the HVAC system is on. We looked at adding sensors. We looked at the event schedules. And so we put a lot of focus in usage and trying to become much more efficient. And I share that in some celebration here as we look at our operations fund expenditures just from January through March, really in the area of utilities. So our January through March 2025 versus January through March 2026, the year-to-date savings and decrease in expenditures is shown there. So in our usage of natural gas on just the dollar amount, I shouldn't say usage, but the dollar amount on our utility bills is down 15% in natural gas. We're down about 21, almost 22% in electric. We are down 21. 0.7% in water and sewer and the
034overall custodial supplies we are down 15%. So when we add all those numbers up, we are to date from January through March, when we just compared 2025, 26 in the same three months have spent $257,000 less in these areas than what we had, like I said, for 2025. So really a credit goes to Mr. Faulkner and the entire facilities team and the really the plan they put in place. It also I know it's sometimes it Rooms were a little warmer, rooms were a little colder, and so it has been sometimes some inconvenience on our staff. But when we are seeing the savings like this and the current financial situation, we're very, very happy with the results, and hopefully we can see this moving down. I also think that as far as cold goes, this was
035a colder winter than last winter. So usage and things, it shouldn't be that we just had a really nice, mild winter. So very, very excited for these numbers. We'll continue to update you all on... this these initiatives and how they're impacting the overall bottom line but we're very excited for the first three months where we sit as far as utilities go any questions on on those great So the last thing we'll kind of talk through, we want to do this at each board meeting because really there's something that happens between board meetings really that's community engagement recap. And while this is not to go through the entire slides, we do want to make sure that the board and anyone who may not have been able to attend those meetings, I know that those are recorded,
036but I know we have a different audience sometimes at the board meetings, but some of the highlights. So again, we just finished up session number four on April 8th last week. We talked about really focused a lot on cuts. And so this was more Dr. Jessup speaking to the group. We did have a lot of time there at the end for some questions and such. But I can promise you she does such a nice job. It's talking to the group. And when I get in there and it's all numbers and charts, everyone gets bored. But so I think that things went really, really well last week. And I just think I really feel like those who have attended all of those sessions. are truly, they may not be necessarily completely, what I'd call, on our
037side, but they are certainly in the loop and understand exactly what's going on and I think are supporting the cause and all the things that we're trying to do. And I think that that sometimes is difficult to do when you bring a community together to get everyone on the same page, and I do think that we've done a nice job of that and feel very good about the information that's been shared. But just so you know again we talked a lot about staffing and the cuts that are going to take place for the upcoming school year and So we've talked about these and board meetings as well, but just to put numbers to them right now again through attrition We are down five custodial positions and down four maintenance positions Really that one of the
038focuses really on the meeting last week is not just talk about the people and the positions but then the impact And had lots of good conversations around that and questions of what this looks like. It's not just that we have fewer people, but this is now facilities not being cleaned as often. Maybe more usage and wear and tear responsibilities put on non-custodial staff. I can tell you here at Central Office that if we want our trash cans cleaned, we have to take them and physically put them out somewhere ourselves. And just different things like that. The biggest thing here is the spreading of germs. Probably sometimes we'll implement additional cleaning during the winter months, flu season. Again, we have a smaller staff. Sometimes those extras begin to fall off to make sure that we can
039just get what's required. So the other thing here is response times are going to potentially increase as well as increased time for salt application and snow removal. Our custodial staff are really the ones in the winter months who are looking at our sidewalks and entry areas. for salt and snow removal. Really, the maintenance are really in charge of the snow plow. So the trucks and things in the parking lots. And again, when you've got nine fewer staff members in these areas, that is a cause for some delays, which could actually increase more cancellations or delays on our end. You know, sometimes a two hour delay isn't necessarily because the roads are just so treacherous you can't be driven on yet. But it's just to give us a little bit additional time to make sure that
040the campus is safe for our walkers and our student drivers and our staff who are coming to school that day. So fewer people can sometimes make that challenge. I can promise you the folks that are in these positions still are up to that challenge and will do everything they can. They do not want to be the reason that school is canceled or delayed. I promise you. But those are the reality of the situation in these particular positions. From the energy management kind of talked about we're really seeing some of the positive side of here as far as the preventative maintenance some of the energy management adjustments Unfortunately, we also had to look at the recycling program recycling program is costing us about fifty three thousand dollars a year This is interesting because when we first
041started that we were actually receiving dollars And now waste manager charges us for that as well as that there's something in the recycle bin That is not supposed to be in there a contaminant. There are fees associated with those as well. So that's an unfortunate program to have to eliminate but again when we talk about what's on the list priority wise we really felt like this is one of those that had to become off the list and it's unfortunate because we have a lot of jobs students with with clubs or even our applied schools program who this has really become a part of their weekly routine and something they do to help out the community so it's an unfortunate thing and i believe that we have to think a little differently there but um but
042that's recycling and again As far as preventive maintenance, I promise you we're not, we're still doing everything that's required. But for instance, we used to change the exhaust, excuse me, filters, excuse me, not exhaust filters, but the furnace filters three times a year. We're only doing those twice now. Or we're looking, you know, kind of going in and doing... or we were relying on just what we have to do instead of doing the inspections every year. It's required every other year. So again, we're cutting back on some of those services. We're still meeting the standard, but Brownsburg standard sometimes is higher than what is required. But again, because of the financial situation, we've cut back. Less mowing, more geese on campus. And again, that doesn't seem like a big deal until you ask the soccer
043program. And right now, the soccer field is a little bit of a disaster with goose poop. They've grown to like the soccer area. So we're putting some things in place to address this, but these are just some of the consequences of removing these services. We really hit this hard in several meetings, but as far as administration goes, again, we've cut associate superintendent position at the end of the year and not be replacing. We are going from four secondary department heads down to two, and the high school associate principal will be eliminated after the 27-28 school year for a total of four. Again, you can see the impacts there as we discuss with the community group. The largest group, as we get in support staff, is really over the last couple weeks. We've seen those have
044not been fun conversations that Dr. Jessup and our principals have had to have. From treasurer's standpoint, we're looking at going to a treasurer for every other building at the elementary and middle school level. And total, that is five treasurers that we currently have in place now that we will not have those positions next year. as well as the middle school front office staff. We have asked the principals to eliminate one at each school for a total of two positions. And one of the things that we really like about front office is the warm, welcoming environment, the promptness in responding, answering calls. Those are things, unfortunately, that may have to fall to the wayside at times. Again, we still want to be a smiling face, but there will be delays because of fewer people in these
045positions. And this is the biggest impact to, I would say, our operation from the elementary standpoint, which is the elimination of the learning lab program instructional assistance. We currently have three at each school for a total of 24, and we are eliminating all three of those at each school with the caveat that down there, one interventionist will be added at each of the schools. So there will still be eight positions added back, so a net loss of 16. And then we have also notified two currently media center assistants at the high school, and we've eliminated one of those for next year as well. From a certified staff standpoint, again, we've looked at instructional coaches. We used to have one, right now currently have one at every building. We are reducing that to one to every
046other building. So four coaches will be returned to the classroom. While that is still the same number of staff, really that means that it's four fewer replacement hires we will need to make at the elementary level. So it is a savings. And again, right now, this probably will be higher, as Dr. Jessup mentioned last Wednesday, but we would rather say lower number and work up than start with a high number and work down. So if we said we're going to lose 20 and we end up only losing 12, then it feels like we were not transparent or left a few things out. So right now we think that 12 is a number, but it could be more through attrition of certified staff, especially at the elementary level, that we're not replacing, which will look at
047increasing class sizes. In total, if I kind of quickly run through here, is that is 49 positions that were eliminated right now for the 26-27 school year. And we look at all the cuts discussed there from certified staff, support staff, operations staff, the non-staff operations. AREA, INCLUDING TRANSPORTATION, AREA 31, WHICH WE'VE ALREADY DISCUSSED IN BOARD MEETING, AND ONE-TIME SAVINGS. RIGHT NOW THAT DOES GET US OVER THE $3 MILLION MARK, 3.3, JUST OVER FOR THE 26-27 SCHOOL YEAR. AND AS YOU CAN SEE, WE DO FEEL LIKE, ESPECIALLY IN THE EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT STAFF AREA WITH FRONT OFFICE AND IAs AND WITH SERVICE CONTRACTS AND ONE-TIME SAVINGS, THOSE CUTS ARE REALLY MAXED OUT. WE HAVE TO HAVE SOME FOLKS IN THOSE POSITIONS. And really from the IA standpoint, the rest remaining in special education, which are tied to
048service provided to our students who have IEPs, we have to meet certain number of minutes. And so those things are really required. It's not been a fun time here and when it comes to having these conversations for sure. And but this is what position that we've been put in due to the legislative decisions. It's unfortunate that 49 positions is about 4% of our overall staff. when we talk about a number to that we will have to eliminate for the next school year so i realized that was a lengthy operations update i wanted to make sure that the board was in went through the same slides there and cover these in a board meeting but myself for dr jess will be happy to answer any questions you might have on any of these slides with the
049staff with the snow removal and things like that has there been any thought of potentially having them come in earlier and then leave work earlier to avoid the possibility of more delays or cancellations with school We are exploring all options at this time so And I assume you mean like leave early like the the maintenance staff to leave early. It's coming coming earlier So I will say that timing is everything right so if we think that we can have school We right now sometimes they usually report at 3 in the morning. We could certainly have them report earlier than that but one of and that's just because of the amount of I don't want them coming after me now. Yeah, the amount of, really, I'll say acres that has to be plowed in order for
050us to have school and time, we have to get started that early. So we usually report at 3, then we're out certainly no later than 4 o'clock. And so we have also explored maybe asking for help. So, for instance, Brightview, they take care of our... They do have snow plow service. The problem, or we've looked at volunteers or folks that can just help occasionally, the problem is we need them to be there at 3 in the morning. And so it cannot be a situation where today they've already committed to plow this company or that company or Walmart, Meijer, or they are going to do these. 15 different residential driveways and then come to us. It really has to be a commitment for us to start school on time. We need the folks to start when
051we say they need to start. So, you know, Mr. Faulkner has had those conversations and I think Brightview is someone that we could potentially lean on, especially looking at the amount of snow. If it's a, you know, three or four inches, that's something that doesn't, that's a little bit faster. If it's 10 or 12 inches, then that might be something where we have to ask for additional services to avoid a snot load of overtime ultimately. So we are trying to make sure also to get folks home so that they're sleeping because there is a certain amount of time that we really don't want after 12 hours of plowing. They need to go home and get some sleep and things. So, yeah, we are looking at all those options to try to make sure we have
052the most efficient plan in place. Thank you. Thank you. All right. Comments from patrons. Reminder that you have three minutes and please state your name. Mr. Murphy. I've tried to talk to, that's much better, Jeff Thompson. He keeps telling me that he'd be more willing to talk to administration in the school system. I called this morning and I was basically told that they've already met with representatives from the school twice and it's more or less is as it is. So again, voters here, especially in Lincoln Township, have a choice and can send a message to Jeff Thompson and Senate Bill 1. Please exercise your choice. Thank you. Thank you, Mr. Murphy. Consent items. Approval of minutes. Oh, yeah, Dr. Joseph. Thank you. At this time, I would ask for approval of minutes from the March
0539th business meeting, approval of claims, and superintendent's report. Do we have a motion? So moved. Second. All those in favor? Aye. All those opposed? Motion passes. Thank you. Old business. Second reading and recommendation to approve 2027 and 2028 school calendar. Dr. Jessa. Thank you. This is being presented for the second reading and approval. This follows the same schedule that we've been on for the past several years. Just ask for approval at this time. Second. All those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Motion passes. Second reading and recommendation to approve policies A100, A125, A200, A250, B175, C125, C126, C275, and H250. Dr. Jessup. Thank you. As we discussed earlier this year, we are moving our policies from ISBA to CCHA. These policies were presented for the first time last month in March. They are being presented for the
054second time and approval today. These policies include non-discrimination anti-harassment, nepotism, conflict of interest, gifts, and use of corporation resources, firearms, weapons, and destructive devices, no tobacco policy, ADMISSION TO THE DISTRICT WITH REGARD TO LEGAL SETTLEMENT, PARTICIPATION OF NONPUBLIC AND HOME SCHOOLED STUDENTS, TEST SECURITY PROVISIONS FOR STATEWIDE ASSESSMENTS, AND SCHOOL LIBRARY MATERIAL REMOVAL REQUESTS. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT THE GOAL OF THIS WAS TO REALLY STREAMLINE POLICIES. AND SO SOME OF THESE POLICIES ACTUALLY Take two or three or four former policies and put them into one I think it's more user friendly and I think we're gonna get some Some really good results out of making the policies easier to read easier to digest. So at this time ask for approval ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AYE. OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES. RECOMMENDATION TO APPROVE CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE
055BOOK FOR THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR. DR. JOSEPH. THANK YOU. ASK FOR APPROVAL OF THE CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE BOOK ALL MY RAGE. THIS BOOK HAS BEEN APPROVED by teachers as well as parents. Our goal when we do a book approval is for every teacher that chooses the book. So if we have five teachers in a certain section of English, then we also have five parents who read the same book. And so we have that information collected for this book as well. So ask for approval of this book at this time. So moved. Second. All those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Motion passes. Thank you. Recommendation to approve 2-3 high ability novel for the 2026-2027 school year. Thank you. Along the same lines as our contemporary literature book, we had the teachers and the parents look through this book
056as well, read the book, give feedback on it. This novel replaces an outdated historical fiction unit with a more kid-friendly option. The book that we're approving is I Survived the Children's Blizzard, 1888. And so we ask for approval at this time. So moved. Second. All those approved? All those in favor? Aye. Aye. And opposed? Motion passes. And recommendation to approve out-of-district student transfers. Thank you. In the past year, we had approved out-of-district transfer students for grades K through 5, as well as 9 through 11. We are asking for the same grade level, grade ranges for students to be approved. We would limit it to 15 students for each of the grade levels. for each grade level allows us to place students in places so that would not require us to increase class size. Our middle
057school is just to the point that we do not believe that bringing in any additional students is a good plan for us. The one change this year versus last year is last year we accepted students in just the month of June and then they started at the beginning of the school year. What we are asking for this time is that we will accept applications from June all the way through December 18th. What we would do is we would only allow students to enter at the beginning of first semester, and those who apply after that would have to wait until second semester. What that will allow us to do is see how many students we either had move out or students who graduated midterm so that we can look at where we want to admit more
058students based on that 15 students per grade level. So we ask for approval at this time. So move. Second. All those in favor? Aye. Opposed? Motion passes. Thank you. Superintendent, comments? Thank you. First of all, I would like to thank our wrestlers for coming tonight. It's always great to honor our kids. I want to thank Mr. Hacker for doing a great job with presentation and operations report today. I think our community engagement sessions are going well. Certainly wish that we had a strong turnout for every single one of them, but we do know that those people who are not able to come have the option of watching the sessions online. I'll be real real frank with you last week and the number of cuts that we made and let people know it was a it
059was a tough week in Brownsburg. These people that Positions were eliminated are not just positions. You know, there are colleagues, there are friends, there are community, our neighbors. And to have to, you know, the people that can be, the positions that cannot be filled through attrition are the best kind because then. We're not telling people they don't have a position next year. So this past week was certainly very difficult. Mr. Hacker and I are going to present to RDC this Thursday at 530, hoping to maybe garnish some support from the town of Brownsburg for the current situation that we're in, and we're certainly hoping for the very best. We have in my mind we've done all that we can to ask legislation for help the legislative session is over There is no help coming From
060legislation. I do think that there are some studies that are in place that have the potential to help us, but that help would not be in place until the 27-28 school year. So we can't count on that help for next school year. So certainly us asking the town to consider supporting our school as the largest employer in the town. as i think a cornerstone of our town is certainly the request that we are going to make i think strong schools make for strong communities and i do worry about the impact of eliminating this percentage of our staff and knowing that that could increase if we are forced to make more cuts for the following school year. Finally, on a happy note, because I would like to end on a happy note, this Thursday is our
061school corporation art show. If you're looking to do lots of things in Brownsburg, this Thursday might be a time to come in. It is the art show. There is a baseball game. There is a softball game. And there is a tennis match. So if you're looking for something to do on Thursday night, we have a wide variety of things for you to do after you join us at the RDC meeting. So that's all I have. Thank you. Mr. Wells? First off, congratulations to the three individual wrestling state champions. I'm looking forward to seeing all three return next year and hopefully make another run at a state title individually. And we get those three and a half points and win a team state title also. Tonight will be my last school board meeting of the school
062year because I'll be out of the country for six weeks starting in May. So I want to take this time to congratulate all the graduating seniors this year. That is my favorite day, especially congratulations to Dr. Dixon and Ms. Hefferman, who are going to have four kids total graduating. Hopefully all these students will continue to make Brownsburg proud in the future. I know this was a very, very tough year, especially like Dr. Jessup just alluded to, but I want to thank Dr. Jessup, Mr. Hacker, and the entire staff for continuing to work hard. Things will get better at some point, hopefully sooner than later, and I guess I'll see everybody next school year. Dr. Fruji? No comment. Mr. Haber? It's a lot harder to give comments here in the middle than it is at the
063beginning. I do want to congratulate our wrestlers, Kay Strabion and Braylon, for their state championships. Look for more in the future. Mr. Hacker, thank you for the operations update. In particular, a nice job on the energy savings. That was pretty impressive, especially given, as you said, our harsh winter. Dr. Jessup and Mr. Hacker, thank you for the outstanding job you guys are doing on the community engagement meetings. I think you're really doing a great job of explaining our situation that we find ourselves in. And while I haven't been able to attend, like many people, I have watched them all and been very impressed. So thank you so much for that. And finally, thanks for taking on the tough, very tough and difficult task of eliminating staff. And, you know, I didn't know that we were
064going to be eliminating nearly as many as we have, and it's just quite unfortunate, but it's the situation we find ourselves in. And so just getting rid of the goose patrol and the recycling wasn't going to be enough. So thank you for that difficult job. I'm gonna start with hard stuff so I can end with happy stuff. Thank you guys for everything you're doing. I know you've diced this up every different way and I hope that the town comes through and helps support us because it is a huge draw to this town. When you talk to realtors, you talk to the people in the communities that they move here for the schools and the athletics and everything we have to offer so it's a big loss on the town. things that we have to continue
065to do and if we don't have that true partnership between the town and the school so hopefully they will come out strong and help us so i'm hopeful for that but thank you guys for everything and i know it's been hard it's been hard on everyone so Gosh, I bought my bricks so the boys are ready. There's gonna be lots of tears this year. Katie and I were telling these two they better be ready with the tissues as we hand out diplomas because there'll be lots of tears as all three of mine graduate. So it's an exciting time in our house. The lacrosse team, being able to play on the field, that's been really cool for my son's senior year. Gosh, Avon, they beat Avon like 18 to one, which was pretty exciting. I mean,
066it's 19 to two, something like that. But not having to drive four to five hours, you know, over the weekends and two hours of an evening to go see the kids. That's been a what was a snot load of fun. Yeah, it made us laugh. It was great, but it has been so much fun. So and the kids and parents have just been so grateful. I think that's it for me tonight. Thank you. And the wrestlers, of course. Congratulations. Right. Congratulations to the wrestlers. You know, I love to look at all of the good things that are happening. The Brownsburg Open Color Guard just finished the World Championships in third place, which is a really big deal. plug for them Thursday night. This is their community night in the Fieldhouse. So if you have nothing
067to do Thursday night, which apparently there's a lot going on, you can go see the Color Guard and Winter Percussion performs their last weekend this weekend in Dayton at their World Championships. And as a mother of a senior, I want to give another thank you to BEF for the large amount of scholarships that are coming for senior students and due every single year. And also to the staff that choose to contribute through the payroll deduction program. It may not seem like it's a huge amount in it, you know an actual paycheck They may not really even notice that it's gone because of the way that BF has it set up but it makes a huge difference to parents and With three, I don't even know what you're gonna do, but I'm you know college is
068expensive I also want to congratulate our robotics team. I think they have a big weekend coming up. They had some great progress this past couple weeks, and they are making a run at potentially a really big opportunity to travel. So shout out to them. And if you have an opportunity to go and see one of the robotics matches, it's super cool what they can do. I don't know how they do it. And again, for those, there's a lot of people in this room who have been at the community meetings. It is really great to hear community members trying to come up with solutions to the financial challenges that we have. This past meeting, we had parents offering to come in and empty trash cans so the teachers don't have to. Or can they come in
069and work with students to make up some of the deficits from some of the cuts? And I think that's where the community and the school combine and recognize that. IT REALLY IS A BROWNSBURG SITUATION THAT WE'RE DEALING WITH AND I THINK THAT THIS THURSDAY THERE WILL BE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN SUPPORT OF THE SCHOOLS THAT WILL BE THERE AT THE RDC MEETING AND BUT I APPRECIATE ALL THE PEOPLE WHO COME TO THE MEETINGS WHO'VE WATCHED ONLINE AND WHO'VE SENT NOTES AND EMAILS AND SPOKE OUT IN FAVOR AND REACHED OUT TO OUR LEGISLATORS AND OUR TOWN COUNCIL MEMBERS TO TRY AND HELP SOLVE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WE'VE GOT GOING ON SO I think Mr. Murphy, too. Thank you for always sharing. He's a great resource during the community meetings, too. It's great. I know.
070All right. If there's nothing else, can I get a motion to adjourn? So moved. Second. Meeting adjourned.
