improv fuing at all not good but good no good how are you yeah I have to wait for it though right I have to wait for them to tell me it's recording that's not well I don't think the TV spped up Jo we goter good evening I'm calling the meeting to order at 7:03 PM welcome to the momit school committee meeting on Wednesday November 15th um a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in advance and I'm not going to steal my for tonight but it was great to walk down the hallway and see all the activities and all the things that are happening and beautiful fall leaves are outside the library and has what kids are thankful like we'll give an update on some other things later so um this time I can take comments from the

audience comments will be only taken from members of the audience who are physically present um each commenter will be allowed two minutes to speak public comments is not a discussion debate or dialogue between or among citizens in the school committee rather it's intended to offer citizens an opportunity to express their opinion on committee business while the committee Andor administrators will not typically respond during public comments myself as presiding officer of the meeting may choose if I deem it expeditiously um if if it's something that can be answered quickly um further should the chair should I believe that an issue Falls outside the purview of our school committee I may request that this that the speaker Direct it to the appropriate person or body so that the matter is given proper consideration I would ask that

you come to the microphone over here um if you do want to speak say your name and where you're from so if anybody wants to make a comment come speak come up forward and speak I guess nobody okay so we will move on do we have our student Advisory Board um representative here um I don't is this the first time you've come this year this year so so we do have some new members so if you would just state your name and what grade you're in and then you can give your report um I'm Genevie Kap I'm the sav for the class of 2026 and this winter is approaching so the senior Snowball Dance is coming up tickets have already gone on sale preparation are full swing also coming up as the pep rally we're

excited to bring the new games and events for students to participate in along with spare week with starts tomorrow with Barbie and kend day following pajama day on Friday not like student council has sent out emails for each grade to sign up for Hall decorating this theme the theme this year is biomes such as like the Arctic deserts grasslands rainforest which is something everyone looks forward to I think it's a great event and Powderpuff is coming up Juniors and seniors are practicing each week in the Fieldhouse outside wherever they can get time to hopefully win the big game and every grade has sold merchandise so far and they're hoping to rep it at the pep rally to correspond with their grade colors which is also one of the spare days we were excited to welcome

the Spanish exchange students who are all so kind and amazing and seem grateful to be here we got out to learn about their culture they're getting to see how life is at Masco and student council just hopes everyone has an amazing Thanksgiving break and we're excited to keep up the festivities and events for the rest of the year thank you jenevie so there's this one Spirit day that I saw on the poster I think it was and it's like something about matching but rhyming what is without reason rhyme with a reason without reason yeah it's it was kind of big on Tik Tok where okay we just have like a person like two people with like Ving names dress up like whether it's two celebrities kind of just something like silly okay so yeah with

the Tik Tok thing because yeah because I had heard it somewhere else and I just wanted to know if it Masco made it up or oh yeah all right did anyone have questions for Genevie thank you for coming as always you're welcome to stay or you can make your exit when sneak out whenever you want to so all right now we have the presentation of the school Improvement Plans by the middle school and high school school advisory councils and I see um I did see there you are okay you're hiding so um we have Phil and Phil mcmanis and Katie dinardo the middle school and high school principes um who I believe are leading this so but Bill's going first all right Middle School um so do you want me to hook up my laptop

or have this let me see did you have some need to I have my I have the PowerPoint on my computer unless it's on here it's on oh I think I got it it's linked in the agenda oh Mike's got it I got it Paul Paul all you have to do is just I got dou we that negotiations but I don't know if it's just okay hi everyone good evening it's my pleasure to be here tonight my first school committee to attend this year so thank you for having um us to present the school Improvement plan this is Julian Thompson I'll let him introduce himself I'm Julian Thompson I'm a Boxford I'm also the Nur director of child psychiatry at Salem Hospital and jul is a member of our school advisory Council this year so

he was kind enough to volunteer time to some um to assist with presentation um the school advisory Council this year also is composed of assistant principal Gavin monal faculty Peter Wilson Caitlyn Robel and Dana Fowler and then parents Annie Duval Jason Nolan Jennifer pavinski and of course Julian so um our work this fall has mainly focused on developing our school Improvement plan for this year we're happy to present it to you here tonight so we're going to take a 30,000 foot view um high level of this overall plan that we have um the more in-depth plan is is shared with with Mike and um I'm sure he can share it with you if he hasn't done so already and it will also be eventually be posted for the website for the community to be able

to see um and read through if they'd like so goal number one um is um Julian's gonna take that and uh explain that to you and then we have two more after that that I'll thank you so uh goal number one is global Community team building diversity and inclusion um I felt this is appropriate for a continued goal and I just share a brief anecdote that I moved here from Seattle two years ago where my children uh had come up in a dual language program and pretty strong concerns that my eighth grader coming in was going to be was fluent in Spanish was going to have to start Spanish one but the school here was flexible enough so he's actually in 10th Grade Spanish um and doing quite well and that being said he's very

happy these Spanish students exchanged with he got to meet and speak with so that being said um we're to continue look and develop learning these opportunities that these we've started on and building upon um and just look for opportunities for the the K the children to experience the the broader um diversity which isn't usually native to this specific area um but they like the trip that they're going on now um and continuing to focus the curriculum on exploring additional opportunities great thanks all right our second goal focuses on social emotional learning citizenship diversity and inclusion and social awareness um it's pretty Broad and the specific goal is to maintain an environment that promotes students well-being both socially and emotionally through good decision making kindness respect and sense of belonging um two of the main objectives

are implementing schoolwide practices support mental health awareness and resources which um is a big focus of schools around the entire State and Country um especially the postco world that they're we are in right now and then the second objective is to to implement schoolwide practices to promote growth in interpersonal and study skills as well as self- advocacy and voice uh this has been a focus of us for a couple of years now um this goal is not entirely new it's more of a revision from last year um because we felt as a committee that it is still an major area of growth for students as we continue on through school in 2023 and 2024 and goal number three is uh under bridging academic gaps in 21st century skills um it's focused under curriculum and instruction

in the specific goal is to work to improve study skills mathematics uh eighth grade science and English language arts and we specifically mentioned a gr science just because it's an um mcast subject that's being tested uh and it it doesn't mean that we're not focusing on the other areas but since those are mcast I mentioned that we also are lucky enough this year to have a Civics test that's going to be piloted um throughout the state uh it is scheduled through the Civics classes it won't be Standalone test days in the same way that the other subjects are um but we'll see what the state wants to do later on in the next couple of years with the Civics testing how they decide to fully Implement um with that being said our objectives are um

in math contined implementation of the new math curriculum in seventh and eth grade that's been a big focus of teachers this year it's brand new for mid school um and then they're going to be moving it up into the accelerated classes the standard level classes as well so that that's a lot of work for our teachers and so far kids have responded it in a positive way um for ELA students will participate in assignments and assessments that strengthen specific identified writing skills again writing um gaps are are evident in student scores so they're going to continue to focus on that and then finally students will continue to participate in the integration of State science standards um the state science standards standards are newer not brand new they've been out for several years now um but

compared to some of the others so we're continuing to um Pro and that concludes the school Improvement plan for this year uh the whole building is responsible for it we all have various aspects that we're responsible for from teaching Traders our professionals so uh it hits all different levels that's about it does anyone have any questions yes um are you able to gather any data that that that shows s they're achieving these or not uh well I mean at the end of the year we we look at look back at the year and and our goals and where we did well and maybe where we have some areas of growth grow the the hard data really is in M task floor specifically for your academics um student grades um and then the soft skills is

really more just kind of climate and culture and getting a feel of start by the end of the year and how they're feeling about um school and um their own you know academic progress their their own Comfort at school um that sort of thing so that's you know that's harder to measure um but I think it comes more from kind overall climate um we don't you know we don't specifically measure the soft skills as easily as it can measure right I just thinking of the um the what the by anual typically by anual yrbs um the youth risk behavior survey um might be useful particularly the one here about student spe understood and supported I mean I I think there's some at least every couple of years we're getting some data around that yeah I

think y RBS is good data in that case it's given in November you know it's a snapshot of time it is beginning of school year but it's definitely something we take a look at um and I think we probably need to do more than that um P personally that that you know to the extent that we can we can have you know hard data around uh whether we're making Improvement or not whether these things are working or not that'll that'll only um strengthen the case for additional funding if something like that or making it a priority if that's necessary I agree okay thank you I think Chris and then I'll go to Trevor Chris now I was gonna ask for similar information about metrics and data it seems like two of the three goals numbers

one and two were really an iteration of work you had done last year so I was curious what outcome from last year informed the ways in which you modified the goals for this year and how are you measuring accountabil I was thinking as you were describing it are there some ways around um like School avoidance attendance lateness Mental Health visits um information coming from the adjustment counselors like are there other ways three big goals are really around social emotional wellness and cultural diversity how are we assessing the impact yeah I mean that's a good point we we constantly monitor attendance I mean that's that te attendance um and looking at interventions that to make but the other ones yeah I think I think that's an area of growth for us how can we really monitor

students and and gather that data as to how they're feeling about school and and diversity Equity inclusion and social emotional um maybe do some surveys and yeah I'm definitely suggestions on that piece of it were there areas from last year that you wanted to improve on and why you carried those goals forward um I don't know if it's necessarily improved I think it's more continued we're seeing kids come up from the elementary schools with with um just feeling differently about school than they did pre pandemic and not everyone um but school is hard the world is hard right now and you want to make things a little bit easier for kids while they're in the building um so that's why it's more of a continuation and iteration of the plan um we saw that citizen

workshops worked really well with students last year they responded well to the author visits that we had um the DDI speaker Henry Turner that we brought in last year was received well well by the the school Community by the students um so we wanted to continue that sort of thing because the the feedback overall was very positive for the kids um so that's where that's where thought process was contining it I don't think it's a good time to end any of that Stu you know thank you trucker um my question was kind of to Chris's I mean I haven't looked at the two side by side but this looks I mean the goals seem very similar um from last year so wanted to know on Improvement but I got that from Chris um on the

um goal number three I thought it might bring up there was a discussion last year on cutting geolab and having another Ela section because corre Hammer was an issue has there been progress towards that oh it's fully implemented that we have the ELA class um Ela Foundation meets opposite de lab so students are um taking both of those classes so for half the trimester they take one and then the other half they take the other um so you know the the proof is in the pudding at the end of the year it's only we're not even one trimester through this school year yet um so we'll see you know how students do with that and we'll see what empath scores are like next year the fall um but so far the classes have been well

received they're going well we have a new teacher for geolab teer for ELA foundations obviously um so they are actually they were teachers in the school already um so so far so good pretty positive response for kids we'll see thank you Matt and Erica and then Jeff and could you uh could you talk a little bit about any relationship to the draft strategic plan that was considered as you were putting these goals together sorry just repeat that a little louder please do you talk about any kind of relationship or any sort of connections the draft strategic plan that you um worked through as you're putting these goals together in other words right the goals should be tied in some way to the Strategic plan I would think yeah I mean the Strategic plan isn't that

hasn't been publicly presented so um so you know that's still bit of a work in progress but all of the things that you see in our school Improvement plan do come up in the Strategic plan as well all the goals tied directly in to aspects of the Strategic plan um so there's nothing here that the Strategic plan doesn't touch on in some way um you know I think the academic piece it's going to be a goal every year for academics we always going to have an mic goal no matter what it's always going to be at least one of the goals if than one um but I think you know the overall strategic plan has to address academics I me that's what we're here for is for school and then the other pieces are you

know they might not necessarily being there next year for the school Improvement plan but I think that they'll tie in um you know from year to year and always be related to strategic plans and move forward ER hi nice to meet you um I have a two-part question one what's the new math curriculum open up open up yeah got it what was that Mike open up resources oh yes open resources and it's uh from New York and it's the first year we're using it so it's um I mean they're using it fully this year and imp but you know it takes aou years to be able to fully incorporate the teachers were training on it this fall okay um second part thinking about goal two it says like promote and um like build resources and

strategies and offering opportunities to students to reflect what are the systems and structures that are currently in place for that whether it's like a calm down Corner in goal two slide three I'm just thinking about um I'd love more specifics about the strategies and activities there for like how those opportunities are provided whether 2.1 or 2.2 okay um well to get I mean look this is this is just promoting it right I mean just the first time that we're presenting the the plan now so we the implementation P still has to be and it's um done with multiple people in the school so to give you exact specifics tonight I I don't really have those ready for you yet but I'd certainly be happy to come back or provide a report um of the things

that we're doing as we start to I think Kendra so whoever wants to go first go ahead me oh okay um I I have a question for the special ed area of all of this because there's a lot of kids that get you know special ed services and their High needs and there is you know a big concern coming from elementary schools coming into MCO that everything seems to sort of drop off so what is or what would be the goal or would there be a f Focus for all of these things for special students or high needs students as well you know and there's a broad spectrum for what they would need for all of these areas of relationship skills academics definitely mcast as well um but will there be a special or a

focal point for them as well well the school improve plan overall isn't tied in directly to specific groups of students it's tied into the needs of all students in the school so you have to take into not only special ed students but gened students um and then the various levels of students that you have in those you know in in all groups so I would say you know specifically um the way that we're going to run a program citizens Workshop is going to be very similar for all students because it's done schoolwide through mblock um but as far as self-awareness or self management responsible decision making that might be done more specifically through some groups we run through the student support center like our Friday lunch groups um or it might be done specifically through

special education teachers and specific skills that a student needs related to um so I think that you know it's it's important to realize that all students have different and unique needs in that as professionals and Educators know they're going to make the the decisions on a day to day basis in relation to this when we have various initiatives going on so um it's not targeted specifically to special education students as a specific goal it's targeted to all students but then um you know tailored for the various needs of kids as we go through thanks that a nice presentation by the way um there's a few of us here that are sort first- timers on the school we with this process last year so have some basic questions sure just y so goals great what happens

with these are these something you graded on the you value at the end of the year are you held accountable to it is this affecting how you're you we do with this now you g a work plan with it I mean it's so it's a is a state requirement that every school in Massachusetts has a school Improvement plan so we have to present it each year at a school committee and then at the end of the year um I would come back and give you an update on how we did with school Improvement plan and and things that uh work well part that are we're still working on or an area of growth um and then things that we might want to carry over to the following year so this plan is an iteration of

last year because last year was a wholesale rewrite and we felt that we definitely needed you know more time to work on specific parts of it um um so it's more aspirational yeah if you miss something in the world no in each School writes their own plan so it's not like the state is holding us accountable to what we have in the school Improvement plan per say um but you know Mike and the elt we talk and meet it uh throughout the year and at the end of the year we'll talk about our school Improvement plans and um you know how things went and we're we need to continue to do some work and um you know where there's definitely areas of growth for student the students that we still need to focus on or

maybe there's newer areas that come out um I mean if you look back to 201920 I wasn't here yet but I was in my previous School we blew up our whole school Improvement plan because Co hit in March you know so it didn't even all the initiatives we had were over in March everything ended you know so you have to be able to be flexible too um that's obviously an extreme case but um you know things things might come up that we are even thinking of right now that we need to address as the building say in in you know March or April so make one quick comment as a parent a new member of surv council regarding this P fi what it's more Shifting the culture you know we're aware that providing mental health

awareness is so important particularly today um and just keeping it on the radar like this is to your point it's aspirational yes but we've got to keep it on the radar and now figure out exactly the specifics to your point of how we get where we want to go you know by Shifting the entire culture in the direction we yeah I guess that's s my point you know you go through the whole process of putting goals together if there really just words that have no you know no meat to them it's it's an exercise required it's process but we're actually not going to live to this why W right yeah yeah I mean I we definitely use it to guide our decision making throughout the year and the kinds of programs we want to bring

in one thing I didn't mention I'll be real quick is um we have a teacher on the committee Peter Wilson who wasn't able to be here tonight he wanted to come but he just attended a major character Washington DC um and he and his team of teachers um implenting a service community service type plan as part of that throughout the school year of the students so we're hoping and I'll talk to Mike more about it by getting them on the agenda for maybe late winter early spring after budget season and provide an update on things and that would tie directly into what we're and one follow I was gonna say we usually have a them come back okay we have Pete uh yeah we don't have Pete because it's Katie now we have Ka we

have Katie and Phil come back um in June usually the the meeting course we get thanks um just final question do you in your mind are you ranking all these equally or you these yeah they're I would say they're all equally ranked there's no specific order here so we want to be able to touch upon all of them and really work to implement each one that we have with the understanding though that there are ones we might need to carry over to next year you depending on how how things go and how students respond and yeah I think my feel s somewh it was only really one goal about academics and there's a lot onal and yes like I said the academics are going to carry over from year to year regardless it's just going

to be what the focus is of it um and academics could be two goals next year and instead of just one goal this year thank youcome thank you okay both welcome we'll talk to you next spring okay what you don't to you okay all right for anyone who doesn't know this ISO who is our high school principal she's new to role this year although she's not a new face at Masco as she was the assistant principal prior to her so thank you very much um a lot of you I have not met so Katie jardo this is actually my 12th or 13th year at Masco but this is a very new goal um so I made Phil go first so thank you so hopefully I can answer all your questions um the high school as

well has a School site Council I have a couple members here today um my parent members are here we have some staff on it and uh three students depending upon everyone's schedules um very busy group and we I've had a really good time working with everyone um to get this implemented this did not get so our mission kind of to the point of the Strategic plan is we're here for all learners we want everybody to learn um we want them to be able to graduate high school and go on and be successful withs how do we make them a whole child how do we make them successful outside of here whether they're going to fouryear twoyear right to the workforce right to the military they need to be successful and be able to live on

their own and do what we can so that's our our biggest goal um so you will see I have a large group that has helped me this kind of ran out of space but the entire building helps with with creating the school Improvement plan um all the way from elt my teachers I really shared it out with almost everybody it was like help me out how are we on the right track where are we going um because if you don't have full school buyin it's not going to work so our first um School climate and culture sorry I'm a paper person um School climate and culture uh to your point um Bill we did the risk behavior survey recently uh in the past we have used that data it'll come out I believe sometime next

year we will have small group committees looking at what the data says how can we Implement some of the concerns that maybe have come up some of the positives have come up you know uh put that out to the community of they're doing great things they're doing more and more community service they're getting involved more often um or if we see that they're concerning um factors are they taking way more risks than we want or our numbers have gone up from years past so we do um use that data with the faculty we do involve um the yab group which is the youth action Advisory Board as well as some student volunteers so the data is used considerably um we also for cultural and responsive teaching one of the big pushes in the you know

many years has been the Dei do have um a great opportunity this uh starting in January one of our professional developments after school is an outside uh provider called Pascal Consulting and they're coming in to work with the Educators on developing healthy languages across all differences um talking about your physical mannerisms in the classroom really working on how you're teaching the students and that you're including everybody and not excluding um and some things that a lot of teachers aren't aware of um being silent is sometimes a you know a trigger for some kids so we're able to offer that we also have Civic engagement project um being implemented as Phil said in the Middle School also our 10th grade is doing a very large Civic engagement process that's being rolled out this year in all

the social studies classes and we have a group of students that are doing another ideas training that actually I believe is next week we just signed up for that so there's a group of about 15 students um going on a field trip to be involved in some more of the ideas training and they're going to bring back what they've learned it's student focused um and they self- selected to go to this um training and along with school climate culture is always social emotional literacy uh we're doing we have different tiers I took out the actual say that there's an image I took it out it was very confusing to people um we have tier one tier two and tier three our tier one is what's happening in the classroom tier one supports what is the

staff doing how are they able to help the students um our adustment counselors and our school counselors are tier three um we have implemented we're in year three of the social emotional leadership team that has been rolling out different mental health programs starting in the seventh grade and um this year will'll be rolling out into the ninth grade and those are mental health screenings making sure everybody's um safe it's a very neat it's cumbersome but it's neat it's a real time survey um and it's online and so as students are taking it there's people crisis um counselors watching to see if somebody presents right away with a huge risk and we're able to grab them right then and there and provide assistance it also shows some minimal risks that goes with parent conversations so your

student need more support within the building and those students who are presenting with no risks and so um it's got rolled out in one grade last year and we're hoping to bring it up to the ninth grade this year uh but that is going to continue like I said we're near three of Five Years on that so who will see for multiple years on this school impr we look at the student Specific Instructions uh we have a tier two program that's in year two two or three and that's our academic success Center so this is predominantly for gened students students who are struggling um whether they're struggling because they've been out of school or they're just struggling in class for different reasons maned by two teachers and we'll put students in there our goal is

a two to three week to get them organized uh it's very EF focused executive functioning and they go in and they get two three goals how do we get you on track the teachers in there coordinate with the the staff around the building and there's a review after two to three weeks has student doing are they back on track get them back into the classes or just put them back in the study hall that we might have pulled them from if we feel they need more more help they'll stay in a little bit longer or we find that that's not working they'll be then referred to special so the the tier 2 uh intervention has been um a huge success right now that room is full and kids are really enjoying getting the instruction from

the teachers that are in there we also have implemented a peer tutoring program this year that is just starting um but right now we have five upper classmen that have offered to do some tutoring they've been vetted by their current teachers if they not the knowledge to be able to tutor the students and they're also just starting to work in conjunction with the TR toown Union who also is running a tutoring program so we're not going against each other we're working together to make sure we're not doubling our efforts um and all staff at all times are working on their IEP and beginning of the year everybody has a quick training to refresh what the IEPs are um we bring in uh the lawyers for IEP 504 laws and then they have to by law

go through every child that happens to be on a 504 or an IP in their um in their classrooms and sign off that they've read them and we are constantly in different meetings with the students and the teachers to make sure all accommodations are being met and the IEPs are overseen by the program coordinators and the 504s are overseen by the school counselors for those who might have some gaps or some unfinished learning um in the past we have offered the acceleration cies we're going to try again this year people aren't signing up for them I think being at this after school but the M block has been a huge assistance with that so students are able to get there one-on-one time um as the teacher can pull them in a lot of this is

based off mcast results so you'll see in my Improvement plan it's English Math Science Focus and also um we are lucky we are a school that does very well on the mcast so the handful of students who either in an EP or are um or have failed is this much smaller group so we're able to indiv individualize what they need um I know the English department head has gone through all the students who failed met with the teacher that that student has and make sure that the um the gaps are are met within the school year before they take the retakes we're doing that in the math the and like I said we're using them the peer tutors and the Masco block to also help this in intervention getting into the curriculum there's ongoing amazing

professional development that's being offered here uh I think the way it's we're working this year the staff really likes it a 10we session we're all working together to really form the whole child so everybody's getting the needs they want it's um requiring all the staff's input which is fantastic because it's interdisciplinary and then we're looking at different um apps different things that have come out like AI how are we using AI in the classroom how do we teach kids to use it properly I always look at it as um you know first artificial intelligence came out and it was like scary to me it's like when a laptop came out what did we just handed them you know this thing what do they do with it are they going to be responsible are they going

to be on watching Netflix while you're teaching and that's where we're starting with AI so it's really teaching them how to use it make sure they're using it properly if at all um and we're doing that with the teachers as well we also in um come January have another outside company that's coming in for professional development to go over how um from edtech to how to use AI appropriately in the classrooms and teachers are really doing a nice job with it and that has been able to um the social studies Department says has really helped them differentiate some of their exams better um because they can ask specific questions and it's helping them if I have this level read or I have this level read or this level how can I make the questions appropriate

for all the students in front of me um our plc's departments are always in plc's um it's built into their schedule as best as possible plcs are professional learning communities they teams and it's fantastic because you have all the 10th grade history teachers together and they're making sure they're following the curriculum they're constantly looking at the curriculum are we aligning with other classes um they look at the standards how they changed each year so the staff have really gotten into the plc's and working together to align everything um and then also gives them a chance to reflect on the students and the PLC is to fold back into our first half of the professional development back to the whole child we have these standards we have the school Improvement plan how do we make it

all fold in that we're teaching um the whole child they're learning everything we're not just teaching to one student in the room and everybody's gaining the material that's what we're here for to teach them and in a nutshell our school Improvement plan any questions did you are you asking a question Chris Cher I have a few um first of all I'm glad to hear that the academics Success Center is being used but you said it was the class is full um so that that's a bit concerning in my mind I'm glad it's being used but yeah wish it you know weren't um are you collecting data on how long the students are staying the return rate the change from previous years yes okay so I don't have it at hand but it is being collected

um this year last year not as much we're doing a better job this year um of collecting it to see how many can stick to the two week do we have to extend them who ended up having to be referred um and when I say full it's not 26 kids like we really made it a small room so it's I think at full we're six to 10 students um so I know you're envisioning a full classroom 26 and it's Mayhem uh no to your point it's not um we don't do that because then things won't get accomplished um and those two teaching positions are Grant funded correct correct okay um and then I had a question on the ideas training I know the student some students went last last year um as like an optional

thing that they did with their I think Ace Club um are there any guard rails that school puts in place for that I know when I went here we had a different group come in and teach and it from what I hear the teachings different but the subject's the same and a lot of students didn't think that was the best approach to the situation are there any guard rails in place um I think the only one really is that it's self- selected so we're not bringing it in students are choosing to attend so I think to your point when it was brought in a lot of students might have had a completely different view of what the presenter was saying so the students have been given um some information and it is um being advertised

through the ace Club but open to all students and so being that they're self- selecting I don't think we have as many guard rails so you're you're concerned okay and does the ace Club fund that because they're the ones act okay and the ideas training lacks an awareness of how to interact with people with special needs is that something you guys are focused that's what we're trying to do in-house okay yeah so we're really working on that with our professional development um one of the professional developments that I didn't put on here is um meeting the needs of all Learners and that's starting with the staff to to your point meeting all students where they're at um from our highest needs to our lowest needs but that is also one of the professional developments one

more yes um the Pascal Consulting was that um PD yes okay yep thank you it's gonna be in the January okay we have not had that yet thank you any more questions for KY thank you thank you all right now we are going to start with our second session of our Capital plan discussion and I think I mentioned at the last um meeting that it's probably important enough that we talk about it until we don't talk about it anymore um we're gonna we're gonna be that's openend um it's it's an important thing because I think it needs Focus so to summarize at our last meeting we I presented a plan um of how to treat capital and that we had three buckets um the first was the hbac in building system management building management system

Ms msss and roof um the second bucket was Turf and the um third bucket was all else which the committee voted to charge the DCI subcommittee with looking into and presenting in December um we tabled Turf because there were a lot of questions that we had about fundraising um so I have invited um a representative from turup which is now known as MOS masconomet Sports Foundation um to just give us an update and talk a little bit about where they're at and then we can continue the the discussion on Turf after that so Corey feedler is here and um there's a microphone there so wherever you're comfortable sorry is this link in the agenda no it's it's the deck from the last okay all right hi everyone I'm Corey fedler um I have a junior

and a freshman at Masco High School um and I am president of the soccer boosters but I was also past president of Pop Stope soccer so I've been very involved in the tri Town um and definitely see the need for fields in the community um that's why I got involved um I'm here to just kind of talk a little bit about where we are from a Turf up as Melissa said we formed a new 501c3 uh called the Masco masconomet Sports Foundation um so the the goal is that's going to be an ongoing um organization the first part of this will be fundraising for Turf um which will allow us to do that um and we're really excited about where we are um and what we have done thus far so um just to give

you a couple of points on the the activities that are going on uh we held a black party in Topsfield uh aoup couple of weeks ago um where the pro proceeds from that went to the massom and sports Foundation um so we will get a portion of the beverage and food sales from that that will go into this as well as we had a QR bar code up there and we raised $750 just thought of off of PayPal without really pushing anything um we also had 12 people commit to buying a brick at that um that event um those are the bricks are going for, each so uh again small um but it's kind of Grassroots that was a more Grassroots effort on our part um we've also been having uh 30 plus conversations with

members of the tri Town um really kind of uh trown individuals alumni uh some businesses um and those conversations are going very well um we actually got verbal commitment from um one resident today who does not have any kids at MCO um for a large sum of money say what but uh today um so that was um exciting so stuff is progressing from that perspective um some other examples of things that we're doing we're submitting a Grant application to Institution for savings um they run those quarterly the next one is in December we should hear back in January that's about $750,000 that we're asking for we don't know if we'll get it but that's the ask that we're we're asking for we've also had someone who has a lot of interest in purchasing the scoreboard

um and putting their name on it we can't give them a price yet because we don't have that cost so we um we're kind of in a a little bit of a chicken in the egg we are still waiting for permitting and that is somewhat of the hold up right now in some of our fundraising efforts people donors want to know that this project is going forward um before they're willing to give significant amount of money so we're I know there's a meeting with stanch tomorrow um where they are going to give us some of the schematic designs and give us a timeline on what those uh what that permitting looks like that will help us um significantly um today I'm not necessarily in in a position to give you um numbers on where we

are um we're asking for school committee to continue to let us run our prog process again we're meeting with there's a lot of individual conversations happening with people um us kind of leveraging all of our individual relationship people and businesses so that is ongoing um and again like I said there's a little bit of a chicken and egg which we're trying to overcome by telling people it is time now to vote to to donate we need the money we need to um so it is starting I think the ball is starting to roll and we'll get there so if we do have a significant naming opportunity um and we if you go to tfop mas. org we do have a list of all of the sponsorship opportunities uh which could be naming the fields naming

the concession stand uh buying a brick Etc so that's all listed on Turf up Masco we're directing people to that website um and we're having those conversations as well if we do have someone that comes with a significant naming opportunity we would bring that back to the school committee and get your approval obviously um and that would happen before um that but otherwise we're looking to come back um end of January mid febru or end of January beginning of February with an update on where we are from a fundraising standpoint and then that would allow us to collectively decide what the next step is um and hopefully we have a big number that we can come to with um I would just add that I think it's really important that we all stay committed to

this project um any skepticism in the community really hinders our fundraising efforts so if if people hear that maybe this project is not going to happen or things like that that really hurts us from our ability to fund raise so if anyone has questions uh comments um you know I'm the turf up committee is more than happy to have individual conversations with anyone um talk through any of the concerns that you have um um and you know we're more than happy to do that so um one additional thing that I did want to bring up um which I think we'll talk about you know potentially at the next for the next meeting would be um we're looking for kind of a low hanging through kind of getting some lower level fundraising going um and we're

trying to leverage um potentially hanging banners outside of the existing football field on the chain link fence um we're modeling this after Marble Head so they have um they just had a very successful um they they sold 170 107 Banners at $525 each um to local businesses they're all uniform in so there's a template and they're all uniform they look the same and then just the business's name is on there so that raised $50,000 for Marblehead um the goal would be this would be a recurring um fundraising effort for masscom and sports Foundation initially going towards Turf but then something that we could do seasonally or every year and kind of rais that money again um so we have a one pager which I've sent to Melissa but maybe we can discuss that at the

next meeting on whether or not that would be something that the school committee would be willing um to fund and that's just one one other fundraising effort that we could potentially um look at to help with this effort that's all I have okay um anyone have questions for yeah um so I guess I'm just wondering about timing in a in a grand sense because I guess last spring when um each of the three towns approved the the money to get us through the permitting um and in assuming that your real big dollar fundraising was was it likely to happen until after the permitting was done be great if it happened beforehand but I but you know I I assume people don't like to give money to projects that haven't been permitted yet so so based

on that assumption um my thinking of timing was it was it was not likely that that was going to happen the permitting process being done and your guys's ability to go out and do the big dollar fundraising that was contingent upon that that permitting I really didn't expect all that to happen in one single year I mean my expectation and I I don't I think I may have said this out loud but I'm not positive was that you this is probably going to take you know a year or so with given the you know permitting process I think we heard was you know six months if it was fast and you know nine months or more if if not um so which would put us next spring before itting even has a chance of being

done and maybe that's maybe that's wrong but but it was it it seems like that was likely that the permitting was going to take that long and given that um it was then then your fundraising could kick off and in Earnest the big the big dollars and then within some period of time we'd have an idea how that was going um and then you know whether you're able to raise 100% of it 75 you know whatever that number W number was um but at that point and this is you know a next year's budget cycle um that we know what if any Gap the school district or the towns needed to make up for um for what uh the your foundation wasn't able to raise now we're I mean is that the way you guys

are looking at this or is that needs to be answered by I think Mike and Jeff as well so anybody can answer this question I'll I'll actually speak and I apologize for cutting you off but I think that what I heard last year was that they thought that the the trigger would be getting the design program the design part going but I think I've heard from Turf up in conversations that I've had with them that they really needed permitting and I don't know if anybody realized that when we were talking okay well we but we voted differently so that might have been your realization it wasn't mine okay I thought we were really really clear and that it was permitting that had to take place before the fundraising began I to be on our way

to permitting that's what I thought that's my brain people want to DED people want to donate to a project that they know is going to move yeah right and I think we've got really good signals from design happening from the towns voting for this to to move forward from a design standpoint um and again we are fundraising and we're having good conversations I think we can get there we will get up we will get some of the way there without the permits we will get even farther when we have the permits um and that's why we're asking like January February time we're hoping that the permitting comes in I mean Jeff and Mike you can keep me honest but I think we're getting a timeline tomorrow on when we think the permits but we're hoping

sometime they said winter I don't know if that's it's it's it's hard to tell because a lot of it's out of our hands and out stand next hands so yeah but we don't have the timeline yet that's tomorrow so I think that's why we're asking for to come back in January February give you an update on where we are in fundra in we we believe we need the fields ASAP um we I don't know if everyone knows but soccer did not play on the fields here at mascow we played at rub shuck field in Middleton this year so every home game was either at rub shuck field or at Boxford common um and it it's it's becoming an issue for us we only had one field for six soccer teams to play on this this

fall for practice so uh when all playing it was a it was a difficult it was a difficult time so we're we're working as hard as we can to move as fast as we can we're hoping that we can come back to you with really good news in January and February and then at that point we make a decision on where we are and then we make a decision on what that next step would be in terms of how we approach the towns and how we Market it to them and from my perspective sitting here where I am and hearing the public and the the updates on stantech speaking with Mike and Jeff about the process um we have there's a potential that we're going to have the permits by midy year in 2024 by

waiting a whole other year you're already a year into the permitting process and so you're so now you're you're it's generally their three-year permits and then you have to wait for a whole potentially just one year so now we're at June of 2025 to allow us to get to ask the towns to fund because we have to authorize the debt no matter what right and then Turf up would reimburse us and then so then we're two years into the project and we have to have substantially started so we have to be we can't even get bids until we have the authorization to fund or the authorization to get Deb and I I'm not saying it right but no you are but like like we in this scenario you're looking at absolutely right potentially beginning to

put bid documents together in the summer of 2025 yeah if we don't act this year corre and we can and my understanding of is and we don't we could probably wait to talk about it a little bit more after there's the next stand tech meeting and there's the design schematic and but you know we have a few options um but I we don't have to spend like if we authorize say $8 million doesn't mean we're gonna the towns are not going to incur that that debt cost right away possibly correct and there's ways that we can be creative and do it but I I personally think it's important for our students and our facility to have fields that people can be proud of and not have to schlep to the tops fields the Boxford common

to rupo park which aren't in the masco's control like we need something on our facility that Masco can take pride in and then it's just the beginning of great things for everywhere else so that's my soapbox speech I think the process NE necessitates possibly acting this year if it's in the will of the committee just to keep the project moving forward for the permitting to not go stale and for us to just go the momentum with donors I think that if we all work together with Turf up with the District administration with our communities we can be we can really have a Masco that we're proud of I mean we had we had three teams that utilized Turf in our in our um in the Mia tournaments and had to go to ess6 Tech it

would have been great if we could have had those games that were home games on our at our school so that's my Soap Box um C had his hand up I'm so I don't necessarily disagree with anything either of you two said um I will say just to start my comments thank you I know all the work you guys are putting in and it does not go unnoticed I mean when I Envision Masco we say Vision 2025 I imagine us to have a tur field I think or do and I don't want anyone in the public to think I'm otherwise I'm Pro Turf it's how we get there that everyone differs on and I just had a question so if we go to the towns for 10 million and say we can take out bands

Bond it whatever but that's could possibly be before the Design's done when we get a real estimate on what this Project's going to cost us so we should have an updated estimate um likely by the end of January um again it's part of the project timeline and the project plan that we'll be talking about tomorrow but that's my expectation is that we'll hopefully have updated estimates have final schematic design updated estimates and hopefully a permit this spring but again that part of it's somewhat out of our control right right because I'm thinking okay we go to permanent I I it is very possible that the estimate we get could change based on permanent it is very likely that it will so and we'll we'll change as the longer we go out to right so if

we're back here 12 months from now happened that estimate stale we're G have to get it redone right just something I think we should all think about that 10 million number could be right could be not right I'm gonna go I heard from I'm gonna go with Jeff because his hand was up okay I don't like thanks for first we know youall been doing a lot of work this um I have I have a couple questions um so assuming the towns actually approve you know you're funding this for reimbursement does that help or hurt your fundraising efforts what we're doing is we're we are telling our donors we need to raise as much as possible ahead of let's just say we are going to we haven't even approached that with donors yet in in all

honesty we are telling everyone that we are 100% fundraising and we are trying to get there um the way that we are sort of viewing this is that we need to show the towns that we can privately fund raise and we can take a large portion of that off of the burden of the taxpayers and that so that is our goal is to get as much possibly in as we can if there's an example of let's just say we raise this is all hypothetical but we raised $6 million and there was $4 million remaining on the 10 million do we go to the three towns and say there's $4 million remaining we can break down ground quicker um if you if we're able to um have the towns vote on that and move forward with

that or do we this project is going to go continue this is going to happen no matter what it's just going to take us longer because we've got to fund raise the remaining for right so we are we are telling donors that we need that and we do have a lot of businesses involved who want the naming rights and the things so there are things that are benefits to those businesses that we think that we can remote um there are also a lot of TR Town individuals who you know want to give back to the community and really view this as more of a community resource rather than a Masco resource so um you we're really appealing to the Youth Sports the flag football the you know um there's the club sports around here and

there are people who are very would love to see tur Fields here at mascow and so I think that with that we will get some momentum okay that's really helpful really was my question I guess my question is when you go out say we need to fund raise $1 million and Fund Raising your target say well the town just voted to fund this why should I donate now does that help or hurt um I mean we're getting some questions of why isn't this publicly funded in in all honesty like why why are you asking for private fundraising when that we feel that this is a facility question and it should be priv publicly funded we are replying with a most all of the turf fields that have been built around here a mix of private

and public funding so um there are public bonds out there Hamilton went other similar but then there is private fundraising added on top of that for other areas so we're responding with that where we do need we do need to show the communities that we are we need we are able to privately fund raise and then hopefully lessen the burden of the tax yeah that's great I just remember all the you know proposals of town meetings everything last fcom self funded 100% we're trying know as much as we can I mean lot Fe we received was that you know the story is changing pretty fast and it's not changing from our perspective we are we are well there's we're trying and doing right we we all love this to be fully funed it I think

when I heard this the first time I wasn't on the school at point this is GNA be externally funded you know fundraising only and now it's not so I have understand the concern that I'm receiving from my town Ms sure so I think it's a perception that can be overcome but um I agree I mean I think it is perception because we are out there privately fundraising today I have Prett smaller questions um so your fundraising plans are signage bricks naming rights those are all great great things but do you think that gets us to $10 million what you think that covers the Gap yeah I mean we're we're we we have plans that if we get we have a minimum a maximum on all of that signage right like if we would love to

get $2 million to name this you know if we don't get the $2 million would we take 1.5 would we take 1 million probably so we you know we're we're we have a range that if we get the top end of the range we get to $10 million if you know if we don't then you know we are we're taking the money as it to be in all honesty uh also the whole Turf of natural grass earlier today um so there is a RIS that box Conservation Commission or some other reason doesn't approve artificial turf would Turf up the you know Sports Foundation would that still support all the work you're proposing you it's not artificial turf um I would say a majority of our donors are looking for Turf so I think that will

be uh that will be a question if if this does not happen then what would that funding go toward s and I think you know um the question of the grass fields versus the turf fields if you do go towards grass that will be you're really limiting you can use it and it becomes more of a high school resource than a community resource because you can't again there's an overuse concept on the grass you can't have people on the grass Saturday and Sunday all day and expect to play a high school game there on Monday um and so that will be that will be one of the challenges here and if if anyone has questions I mean we went through this thoroughly when we were approaching town meeting we have a lot of information about

grass versus Turf and um some of the the environmental concerns are all on the website so happy to direct you guys there as well and happy to talk about it to anyone um we played on one grass field for my son's of varc soccer player we played on one grass field all season and it was Mas it was at Ru field every other single town every other single school that we went to was a turf field so it is it is not I I understand the grass versus Turf from an environmental standpoint but I also know that what we have been talking to stanch too is ensuring that whatever we do is using the most recent most environmentally friendly surface that we possibly can and that will be part of that will be part of

the bit so few more questions now I just brought up a new one um last one for you I guess the other on per you had three questions I know these are all important you they spent an hour talking about this before right and yeah we're all very engaged I'm kidding with yes sir um so March 20 you know March of this year you said you had half million dollars of commit commitments for for fundraising was converted over that that's actually that's not true there was never a commitment in Mark the minutes I have it right here um to date they verbal commitments of $500,000 based on permits being issued that's when we voted to not we the school Comm voted to create the momic project fund account I don't I mean we've raised hundreds

of thousand dollars over the last 10 years up until this on numbers of different series of Permitting and and um situations right this is spefic to the turf okay I I'm not I'm not aware of they funded numerous studies for us that we did not have to incur the costs I'm just saying in the minut said there was half million dollars committed to date herbal committed right I'm asking you was converted over that's all the question was yeah I mean we are um we just recently created the account at masonet so that we can move that money in we also have a separate account that's kind of collecting our smaller donors so our PayPal account Etc um we do not have anyone that has submitted into the Mas masconomet fund yet um and again it's

a little bit of the chicken and egg like I've said around the permanent piece but again we've engaged with 30 people plus people who have at various stages over the course of the last 10 years said we would be willing to commit to Turf and um so we're re-engaging with all of those and again there is quite a bit of momentum out there um people are very excited about the project I don't know if any Trevor was at block party and Melissa was there as well there's a lot of people um really talking about Turf um and the opportunities there so again I'm excited I'm hopeful um you know but again until the money's here we don't I I think we're all hoping it comes through just course you know there's a lot of a

lot of questions I won't be able to defend this so I have to ask the hard question course so the last question is more for per versus grass you know my last time I remember stch was sort of G have a balanced evaluation of turf versus natural grass and what I'm hearing today sounds like it's really leaning towards Turf only that's the design is Turf okay we already went through the feasibility study and that's what we push forward with the towns last year I don't think that's accurate I think you know both were on the table at the point the time and stantic would come with an evaluation no they were it was never it was always it was Turf up for since 2015 which I think is why a lot of people in Boxford

are really concerned about this talk about grass as an option and then all a sudden it's not we talked about grass talked about rting grass fields last year we did um since 2009 so our V I mean I was at Town Hall like coms I remember it was you still an open question so I've been sitting at meetings for five years and it's never been about grass I think what we said meeting was if Turf turns out not to be an environmentally acceptable option then we'd have to go to Grass that's pretty much what was said I just asked that question that sounds like that's a no so well I find it hard to believe that Boxford already has approved of a turf field in their Community Ian it's a RIS not that hard to

believe it is box I nothing I haven't seen any information either way so I I have I have two hands so Bill and then Matt and then I think Kendra's waving perhaps so but I wanted to insert that I think that from a fundraising person perspective and a a district there may be ways to be creative because we do have two Fields right so I would love two Fields here because I think there's the need for it from a from Athletic program standpoints but if only $4 million is raised or $6 million you know can we can we just do one at a time so I think there's I want to get that in people's head that maybe like 10 million is a scary number but we can talk about what the wh ifs if

we only money to build one that in January or February yes I think I we at Turf up truly believe we've got one shot to ask the community for this um and I um we are working very hard to try to get as much as we possibly can so that we can fund the plans as exist it if we come back in January February and we are not at the state then I think we collectively decide what's the next step but I think we we need a little bit more time to work our process right Bill uh yes um well first of all thank you so much Cory and I I as I'm sitting here concerned that my questions or my tone may have may have come across or or um you know more negative

than uh good I I'm glad to hear that because it's certainly wasn't my intent um you know I'd have I've been looking at this thing for a very long time now probably 2015 um and all along I've I've seen the conditions of the athletic fields and I know we need to do something about them um my concern all along was that I wanted to do it in a way that um protected the long-term Financial uh interests of of the towns and that there wouldn't be any surprise is you know along the way so it is important you know the process that we that we follow and and I'll be honest with you I'm I'm open to changing things if that's the right thing to do um but you know I think we're I certainly want

to encourage you guys to you know continue your efforts to to do this because obviously that's the best possible outcome um but there is no question that um the fields AR acceptable um and you know whereas you know we're not an NFL team that can afford a billion doll uh stadium with with natural grass fields that they can you know roll in and roll out you know at their at their wi that's that's not an option you know for us live in new right exactly exactly so we've got to come up with something that's the best for us uh but we need to do it in a way that you know the taxpayers um are you know really understand yet what what they're being asked to do and what the risks are associated with that

um so uh keep keep up the great work and uh keep us posted thank Jo and then mat Jo an easy question actually and maybe I'm blind but um how are you guys advertising for getting donors because I'm I see some things on Facebook here and there but um I mean are there's signs around because I've had people call me and ask me how do I give money to this yeah we're we're sort of doing a little bit Grassroots and we're kind of doing individual conversations right now um because we're trying to get those bigger donors there is going to be a like more Community efforts that we're planning you know we would love to have people come out and walk the fields we're planning some you know $100 here $100 there those types of

um activities so that will happen ideally like more in the spring um there is a um Turf up.as turob mas. org has a website we are adding a donate Now button to that so that can be where we can grab you know some of the smaller donations as well um so that we just set up that um there's a PayPal account but then we also have a give butter account that will accept venmo and other things as well so that should be up this week any signage for instance you know have all the signs that we used in the spring um to get people out to vote for town meeting we save they're pretty um uh generic so we're hoping to like reuse those too um and I think some of this the um the

banners um that we're looking to promote we would also do promote some of their their information on on Turf up as well but uh I think it's you know right now we're at kind of trying to get more of those bigger donors High net worth at a more individual level and then we can um but there is co plans on Facebook Twitter doing some social media campaigns Etc um but again honestly we're in this chicken and egg pery thing before we really kind of promote some of that but I think that if you had and I'm I'm exaggerating here but if you had a thousand people buy bricks yeah that would speak more strongly than one person giving a million dollars right and I think if you want to show Community Support you should be

going down that small donor path yep harder sooner just my sense but yeah I I mean I think some of those events are very timec consuming as well right so to try and like run events that raise you know 152,000 here or there it's definitely a good Community booster but it's also we're a committee of five people right now so you know it's also uh timec consuming we are definitely going to prioritize that and we are prior um try to focus bigger fish in to get some of the momentum going I had a question um so Corey thank you right for all you're doing the colleagues um much like everybody many others have said already I'm a trip supporter I'm a supporter of a e healthy friendly field course right yes um I kind of

want to bring it back to the second bullet because I think that's why we're having this discussion and Mike je maybe you guys can help me understand and Corey right how do we know when we're done I think I have a two-part question how do we know when we're done fundraising done for this particular project I don't think we're the right people to ask that question yeah Al so then I'll ask the second part of my question and maybe you'll see why I'm poking at this like so we go to town for $10 million right now and at some point maybe it's in March or maybe it's in November we say we're done fundraising and they've only raised $2 million right so now we're towns are on the hook for8 million we're committed at that

point right so I'm trying to understand like how do we when do we when do we say and we're agree if we vote on this now we agree to $10 million going to and we agreed to go to the town for $10 million how do we say stop fundraising right like how do we where do we how do we close that Gap when do we say the Gap is I don't think I don't think you're really GNA make the statement stop fundraising but I think it gets back to you know the point bill made last meeting and again at this meeting and the counter point that Melissa made right so do we move forward now or do we wait for years a year or a year and a half and take it to give fundraising

more time and bring it to town meeting in May of 2025 so if the Project's $10 million could you continue to fund raise for three years and then just piecewise give us money every six months technically yes that is that the execution Vision technically I mean they couldn't keep giving us money past the point of project completion because that's when we'll have to finalize a bond and pay the bills and all that kind of stuff but there is some flexibility um and I think it's up to the I think it's up to the committee to decide is it a public project that you're going to put to town meeting and offset with some fundraising now or you going to give it more time as bill has suggested two meetings in a row now to give

fundraising time to gain momentum possibly free up this hang up with permitting and maybe the floodgates will open maybe they won't I mean for me if I'm running a business you want me to you want me to just say take a chance on $10 million and maybe I'll get you reimburse to $10 million maybe I won't maybe I'll reimburse you a million maybe I reimburse you four I'll reimburse so the 10 million is somewhat arbitrary at this point right now 10 million is like an arbitrary number is right now is eight million obviously we're going to get adjust and that was no actually if we go if we go back to the updated cost estimates from last October so the 10 or 11 million is a very real number and it will be updated in

January based on Final schematic design here in the next 30 days or so it could be more probably not less right so yeah I don't care what the number is personally it is what it is right it is what it is but Matt makes a really good point you know how do you first of all you spend a year saying we're going to fund this and then I'll by the way we'll get the money off the fact how do you other people saying right please B on something's already paid forar and and how do you have faith that we can do that right and just one more thing right I mean so we go to town and they approve it and I'm being a little seious here but what's the motivation to continue fundraising once

it's approved at town but who's to say that you're going to raise material funds in the next 18 months we we we don't know that got all these unanswered questions right so do you want to wait and give a time or do you want to move forward now and and some of it is that we vote on a if we were to put this in as a warrant article we would tell the towns in January that we're considering it but we wouldn't actually vote on it till March mid-march yes and authorize the debt auth debt yeah and at that point we may have a sense of an idea of what's so we would ask it may be permitted by that so you got the tail wagon the dog but again it is a big chicken

in the egg like Cory's been saying but we don't have to incur that debt like I think we would all we would ask tfop to continue fundraising I me but but then Jeff makes a great point right if if the the debts authorized by the committee and town meeting hypothetically approves it then why would I give my money yeah right so I so I think the bigger vision and I may I I'm sorry hi guys um I just have a two quick notes to say I um appreciate the discussion I appreciate the um Turf Up's presentation and everybody's questions and it basically to me sounds like we're choosing between the debt question this town meeting or waiting and it sounds like we can't make that decision yet we're we should be waiting for the turf

UPS Turf UPS next presentation in January or February which I know makes it a little difficult with our budgeting timeline but we don't have enough information and I also just want to remind everyone on our committee especially maybe newer members who um you know didn't um have the luy of being part of these discussions over the past at least year if not many years that there's been a really big effort to be working together this is a together project so um I would be cautious to not nitpick over some of the language as far as what was promised versus what's what's intended versus what Turf up is aspiring to it's they've made it clear that they've always they've always wanted to fully fund that's very different than a promise in my mind and I just

think that if we're continuing to work together which we really want to do is be together on this um let's have those conversations offline if anybody wants to have a conversation directly with someone from Turf up about those questions let's do that but um I don't know just a little gentle reminder for all of us thanks thank you silly kraad or did you get your question thank you for clarifying um KRA had her hand well um so I just want to go back to like I'm a visual person so for me I like to kind of have an idea and I do like that on your website I like for me the timeline of where like how everything is out there for everybody to kind of see what's happening in stages so pathetically the design

would be something would that be a visual that we would potentially Maybe depending on permitting have March did you say like is that like what's a what's an estimate of when we could maybe if everything goes as planed see something of what is going to be tomorrow yeah I'm gonna I'm gonna clarify the process so Masco last year we asked the towns to authorize thing for the design and permitting process so Masco actually owns that process now it's out of the hands of turfs up or turf up like we we had to own it because it's our facility so the stanch group is actually the one the designing it and they'll have it and we'll have eventually have to present it so I apologize for stepping in but I just wanted to clarify the process

that it's actually our design it's masco's design and that will have all the facilities everything sort of and that's what we're working towards right now so we've got a district design team which is made up of Joe's on it Mike and I John delanis Sarah from their team uh we have another meeting number four tomorrow I think it is so we're g to come up with a plan to finalize the schematic design and then stch will go back to the drawing board to finalize the plans and then work towards whatever timeline they're going to present tomorrow to get us through permitting so engineering work and finalizing design work so they can go through the conservation okay Mission and the planning board okay we don't know exactly what the timeline is yeah I'm just thinking because

I'm trying to picture what it would look like too I think you know for everybody schematic design so we can present those to donors too right yeah so hopefully maybe you know in in the New Year in January we'll have some illustrations that can be shared and with the committee first and then the group and then put out there and used to advertise and all that kind of stuff market and I I believe if you go to our website um under Capital uh district offices there's tab for turf or actually it's under school committee and the original plans were were not design plans they schematic so it showed you a visual of what it would look like but now they're in the nitty-gritty of actually placing it on the ground and and doing that they're

a pretty good kind of representation But A lot's changed it's pretty yeah yeah so for being for if you need a visual that's actually a good spot um it's actually under I think it's under subcommittees yeah we have some of it on Turf up too yeah website like P I mean it's not super detailed but you could see like the field one field would be here another field would be in the back additional parking those type of things um it's the one the atic Turf overview it no it's not it's one of those I can't pull it right now but it's it's under that tab Kendra I can go under like turfield task force is it yes yes yep it's in in the turfield documents I think it's the feasibility study set we have it

in Turf up too there's a the documents are all there's a document section we have all the original so there's been mult multiple um feasibility studies and things that have been done okay no I was just curious I'm person so I like to just have an idea of when yeah for all for everybody just to and I so some of this I feel like I've been talking about it for five years which I have so I I often forget that there's Bill's actually the one who's been longest than zilli and then me so there we are um so I like stop us I'll send things out if we need to or direct you so um did you get your question answered yes okay and then Trevor's next um just to Jeff and Matt's Point um

they're still going to be fields that need to be named there's still going to be scoreboards that need to be named there's still so there's still going to be opportunities to fund raise because I I struggled with that question myself kind of all week trying to think of what just outweigh one or the other and that's what I've kind of come up with in my head um and then to the other point there's still going to be uh the massom sports Foundation that was my point like we're anticipating that we're going to be kind of constantly fundraising for massonet sports Foundation right now the first project we're fundraising for is Turf but that doesn't we could be fundraising for replacement Turf we could be fundraising for uh you know a track track you know we

could be fundraising for you know additional facilities you know add you know another building if we felt we needed to later on right so um I think that that the way that we formed it is in like Turf up we had always anticipated tur up would raise money for Turf and then go away I like what we've done now with the massom and sports Foundation because it's just a a reoccurring um and whatever money we're raising for that goes to whatever is eated by massom force sorry will will all fundraising dollars between and the last invoice Jo paid go towards complex yes that's the goal of the committee right now yes we won't get distracted by some other project going on oh silly thank you whoever noticed um it was my yeah thanks I'm really

happy about the sports Foundation I think that's gonna go a long way and you guys uh I wanted to mention that yeah there is the we we should be referring people who ask questions to their website because there is like a plethora of information not just about Turf up but about there's there's some info about the sports Foundation there too um and on our website I wanted to ask if our turf up Liaisons could take a look at what's there now on the turf up um Leon tab of our website and try to keep it updated with like a little summary of even tonight's meeting when you go there you'll see there's um I know Trevor is quite familiar with it um anyway I'm just kind of making that request if you guys could take

a look at that and see what might be helpful for the community so it's on the website so it's really easy to direct people to it for information and um I can I kind of want to reiterate that I think I think we kind of have to wait on this decision but um I think we have options and I think it should be pretty clear because we i i before I was sort of advocating like let's not let's stay working together but I also want to remind the uh Turf up group that we do have a lot of public perception to work with for any especially anything that's coming to town meeting so if the lead time is too short then the decision is going to be made for us and we're going to have

to wait and I think if we wait and it's only one year hopefully none of those um estimates will will become too stale to keep everything moving forward but um I just want to mention that that that's you when you want us to come back um you know the longer we wait obviously hopefully we would have better news for you but again you tell us when you need us to come back we'll talk about it so uh Trevor has a question then I have a comment question just to zilly um me Kendra and Sarah had met on Thursday and we went through our website to figure out what documents needed to be updated so that is in the works awesome thank you of course so I think that we probably will be getting an update

on the Stant meeting at our December meeting the next stantech meeting and where you stand and a better timeline November 29th maybe yeah we can put it in the superintendent update okay um yeah I don't know if we're gonna we'll talk about that um I think probably to move our convers like we're we're obviously just need to keep talking about it and have our questions answered we still still need a lot more information on the timeline that's going to be updated tomorrow when we're going to get flatal plans to look at things like that so there's no decision that needs to be made tonight about anything um but it's you know we're thankful that tpop is still working and fundraising money that we can continue hopefully to work together with our community for Community to

address the needs of our students but also to address the Greater Community need um and I think that I speak for myself and I hope that a reason why everyone is on a school committee is that so they can you know say that they support Masco and that they want Masco to be the best version of itself that it can be so um I don't know if anyone has any more questions about turfer we can if there are questions we can sort of um you can send them to me I can get them answered by whoever needs to answer it um and hopefully we'll have an update that's brings a little more light and more something you can put your your hands on for the next for the next meeting so that we'll have a

timeline and things like that um anyone objects to that I don't know we don't have to can keep talking but we have other stuff to get to so anyone thank you Corey and I will once we discuss it we'll let you know when we would love you to come back but probably in January okay thank you thank you okay all right um agenda item G the first reading I I this was my fault I knew that it wasn't ready and I forgot to take it off so that um to our next meeting um I know there's a policy subcommittee meeting on Friday and um you'll address it then moving on to item H October 1st 2023 enrollment report SC there we go all right so uh this is in a packet um as well so

following along uh the first uh slide in this uh presentation shows our uh Delta from October of 22 uh through October of 20 3 uh we use October 1 as our enrollment uh date because that's the date the state requires us to uh on that the state requires us to submit our enrollment figures uh uh as of October 1 of every year um so you can see that we we've decreased uh from 1610 students in 22 to 1592 students in 20 three um you see the the uh numbers that are behind that change um we lost 27 to graduation in grade 12 uh we added 281 students into grade seven who who were resident students uh we added nine students to grade seven through school choice uh we added seven students to grade nine through

school choice and three students students in grade 10 through school choice uh we had 48 students transfer out uh in eth grade and you see the Box calls out where those students actually went uh 21 to asex Tech 10 to St John's and then uh three two threes and twos uh to other local uh private schools uh we had 10 students transfer in at grade nine uh and then we had two other students transfer out so that's the the change uh from 1610 to 1592 uh next slide in here breaks breaks this down and shows you some historical enrollment uh year by year and by grade remember these aren't aren't necessarily um straight line Pro projections they're year year they're compar comparing different class sizes so when you see a Delta of 10 from grade

eight it's that there were just fewer students in the in the seventh grade class the prior year um and trying of see this also shows you down at the bottom the uh grade dist distributions in the trown Union Schools uh as of October 1st of 2023 and then going back to to uh October 14 uh generally the trend for us is that we are seeing an enrollment decline um typical for Essex County of Massachusetts if you look at the census over the last you know this most recent um federal census uh essis county is getting older that's there are fewer children in general um in in our coming into our school districts just m real quick um I mean the trown school Union numbers don't support that argument I hope so I mean they've they've

kind of stayed um a little more on the on the level side although they're going down too but it's just demographically in ex County Mass um our our enrollment our demographics are skewing older and so that you know large case are fewer students in the world 10 years ago yeah there was a trend with the younger grades starting a few years ago that the classes were get starting to get bigger but just slightly bigger right sorry I'm just looking at the trend from 200 student 2011 students down at 1592 at the at mow and then at the trown union it's 1969 to 1953 over 10 years right so there is no downward Trend at the trown level over 10 years is lips but there a trend right and so it just to me I interpret

that data as k kids are leaving the tri town to go to other schools or the Delta is usually I think was 40 was the average number that we usually see eth grade it's e it's the eth and ninth grade year that we see a change and it's usually about 40 45 yeah 4 45 do you have you know do you actually track that you have the radi transfer out do you have that over year over year yeah I looked at the last seven years and the average is 45 it varies from a low of like 38 to a high of 58 last year share those numbersa you can pull the data from page two is it there so you just have to look from the eight and nine for each year eight from one

year to nine the next is that that's just general decrease that's not actually transferring out right students that that were in eth grade that didn't show up in ninth grade one year later you could you you could relocate or could right yeah right so but we don't know why don't have trans rout includes people leaving the in the system or people who live in town people who move right right because there's two I guess I'm trying to just get my head around is it people relocating or people going to a different school but staying in the tri so that's why I presented it in two separate buckets on the first slide right so like you know the the 48 kids that that were in grade eight that transferred out they literally went guess that's what

I ask for I might have it for a couple of years I don't have all the individual I've only been here for a few years so oh you manually do this oh I do everything manually yeah it's all manually here you actually gather kids data and you see where they were in the state system in eighth grade and then you research where they are in ninth grade yeah so for example the the 10 kids that um that transferred in um sorry that transferred new grade nine transfer in so one came from Salem one was homeschooled one came from Manchester one came from Triton one came from pey one came from Beverly two came from Danver one came from Malden one came from Medford but you gotta go go through and individually P individual everything yeah

the system here here not not3 right not up to date right this not on you guys it is what it is you make it work but data you pull again you have to pull the data from the state yeah database yeah and know what to look for yeah yeah GPT right we hope GPT is gonna fix that not a system 25 years old is school choice in the first page school choic is in this but it's not in the in and in this but not for example in this so SL I have up there the second page in this is total enrollment so School choices in that anything that's and that's titled total includes faculty students and choice students anything that's titled resident is strictly resonant that's the next total again that's by town the

one that we use to calculate the apportionment is strictly resident that's that's the one that I sent to the the last one that says resident enrollment distribution by town so the first one with 10 new ninth grade students it says on the third page one faculty in seven choice so the other two transferred just literally moved into District yeah so there were 10 movs there were 10 movein yeah okay 10 new transfer in there a moving in right okay that's outside of there were 19 new Choice that's outside of the choice nine in seventh grade seven and nth grade n73 yeah blind nine and seventh grade seven and ninth grade three and 10th grade and the three and 10th grade was because last year we opened it up because we did not use those spaces

before right right thank you I was going to say in response to Matt's question question if you look at grade six it's gone from 328 down 265 right that's the feeder number coming in damasco so if you consider that decrease of 60 students over six years in high school that's 360 kids that you would see as a as a decrease over time I think that explains a chunk of it and the other chunk is the transfers out from 8th to 9th so interestingly enough right on average we the an incoming seventh grade is 15 students larger than the outgoing sixth grade class that comes up so there must be students coming in from places other private schools let's say and then to your point Joe you know at the E 8th to nth grade juncture

we lose around 45 students to private schools so I know that in Topsfield we look at it every year and zilly may be able to speak to it but then these are all everything's pretty normal it's just the number of kids have gone down and um I think I've also looked at enrollment in other towns in that are similar to us and it's very similar for town try town you know the total School versus what's actually graduates from mascow or who actually graduates from mow because we have we're affluent so people send their kids to private schools if they they choose to I hav see the AG ripping up k33 or something what is it like the kindergarten at three it's definitely on the uptrend versus yeah hopefully you there hopefully it's S I mean

it's it's tied to again demographics tied to how many empty nesters are in each community and at what point will those empty nesters actually you know decide the downsize there's a whole thing of Dem look at the fifth grade you look at the fifth grade in Middleton I mean they have an extra there's an extra class you know that it's a very large class that's coming you know that's coming so that you know we're going to see that yeah it's 109 and I think they just added another section of kindergarten I think there is a Feeling that people you know I've heard a few times over the last year or two that you know we're losing students you know people pouring out I'm not sure if these numbers support that you don't think that's the

average the average is 40 from E to 9th yeah right and have done some some work on this not conc on this on that statistic and um there's a very high correlation of the percentage of students in private school with actually the the public school's performance here it's again it's a socioeconomic reflection of of the communities if we're seeing a consistent number of 45 though and we have a smaller population then we're in a bigger percentage so that's that could be concerning I was surprised um at how large the number of students going to Essex Tech was is that a larger number than typical remember what it was last year sorry I think we have pretty good numbers in general that go to Essex Tech it's know it's a state at our facility it's what

we want we want kids yeah so it might be an indication that we have to look into six Tech after dark yeah that's think might demographics I think you know postco people are starting to reevaluate colleges yeah so a little bit of that as well I mean hard to figure out you right people are really selling the trades these days not you know yeah and if you go to colleges it's actually because I've been on a lot of college Tores this year the employee like the employ ability of students after graduation is the number one thing in a lot of schools like the first thing that they tell you and I don't remember that yeah I mean certainly when I go to engineering school no well yeah I was a political science major so it

really didn't but I don't remember that but I do have a child going to an engineering school so that make S I think silly has her hand [Laughter] up thanks Dom am I good Melissa yes um yeah only because you mentioned that I I've been trying to keep this data get I get the same numbers Jeff has obviously because it's math and we better be getting the same numbers um but yeah because but I'm looking really close like so obviously we know the population trend is the population Trend outside of our control but what's the drop off rate from grade 8 to nine is really where I try to focus like I have it mapped out I'm looking at it now um and as far as the percentage what Chris mentioned we did have a

like a slight dip in that percentage leaving in in 2016 and 17 but otherwise it's um between 13 to 16% and this year's 15% so we're really right in the pocket of what's been average for Masco does that mean that we can't do something to make that number lower no of course we can try to keep more kids but I just I like to watch it closely because I do think sometimes there's a presumption that people are fleeing and they're not that's all are we um St John's Prep is you know with 10 students the second highest place where students are transferring out to is that pretty indicative in terms of Essex Tech and St John's Prep being like the second place where we see kids go to yeah I would think so just yeah

you know you have typically one very well regarded private school I yeah get it just didn't know if that was yeah it's usually St John's is you have the tuition St John's you have the tuition at St John's do not I know like Brooks and you I it's up there yeah I think it's 28 28 yeah roughly I guess on fence $20,000 bump versus Brooks at 75 it's a different equation right yeah 22 23 yeah right so this gets submitted so goes actually to the last page the for the is on the the second table on this page the assessments percentages by town when you get to the FY 25 number that's the the number we will use to calculate the assessment uh split that's the fouryear average right the resident enrollment though interestingly enough

if you look at the box to the right um that's that's titled onee change and it's percentages um that's the shift in the percentage from the numbers that we use to build or a portion the FY 24 budget we will use in the fy2 process and you can see that Boxford increase um six 1610s or 1600s um Middleton is a negative .45 and Topsfield is a positive 3/10 so what that means is that the apportionment formula will change and it will technically shift $145,000 before we even start talking about increases to our budget it will shift the money based on the new apportionment calculations so an additional $51,000 will shift to Boxford $445,000 L will shift out of Middleton and an additional $95,000 will shift to Topsfield just based on the shifting of the assessment

percentages that we'll use in the calculations and then we'll apply these new percentages to all the new money and that's after the minimum required School spending number is taken out so that's going to change too right B we have it minimum we won't have until the end of January once the Cherry sheets come out um budget yeah so I had a point I was gonna ask you to make never mind um Joe a question how close are we getting to where right now we have four Middleton reps four box red reps and three tops field reps it's based on these student numbers correct right where it comes from census right it's supposed to be uh census yeah I think go back and look and see what we really did to the language in the last

two Regional agreement changes ago I think we took out the real reference to the census I think it have to look it does say we're going to look at it every 10 years which we did after the last sensus came out and there was no change uh the proportional representation so I'm looking because so that's done how often though I think it's every 10 years it's actually 10 years I have to I have to go back and look it originally the doc the regional agreement references looking at the most recent census and I can't remember if we took it out or not because it was there was something though we did have to change around that language jie made us made us change it because wasn't uh didn't really work say [Music] s the election

of committee members can you guys speak up we're looking through the um the committee will review its apportionment as soon as practicable after each federal census and will recommend such amendments to this agreement as may be necessary that's what it was originally the document said you it was going to were automatically going to change it based on the census but the regional agreement already spells out how many reps are from each town so we actually GNA have to you would have to amend the region um so you have anything changed rly it's an amendment to do that right okay and when we looked at it and I looked at it with Desi they said no you don't have to make any changes right now but I will say one of the policies subcommittee's goals still

carried on from last year was to amend it to 33 and three right I had a side comment K earlier just you know I totally agree this is demographic so I'm not these numbers look you know one of the things that does Drive demographics as towns turn over is go rankings and math has a very good reputation but you know rankings do kind of move around a lot you're not consistent so anything we can do to work on that I think that's helps bolster the future of the the school op on onings the rankings thing I I I don't put a lot of stock in in 99.9% of them um you know so you know think talk about us news and World Report 60% of that is based on AP scores and I'll tell you

right now you want to you want to increase that ranking all of you now pass a policy that says every student has to take one AP class we'll go right up I agree mean how you can can are amazing you can work these numbers all you want you know understand that sometimes we can play that game but I I don't recommend I would like to have a conversation about those as a group one night agenda item yeah all right any more questions about the enrollment report those have been submitted to the towns based on Jeff ill after October 1st um so the next item on our agenda is the superintendent's report yeah already there we are we're all right hold on be really quick I have a lot pressure yep all right so first off

after a four-year hiatus we have a group of 24 students and two teachers from the Kio Santa anaa for our Spanish Exchange program uh students are staying with host families throughout the TR toown uh who have generously opened their homes and we'll be helping to show them the beauty of the NorthShore uh while at Masco uh students will visiting Spanish classes shadowing their exchange partners and participating in various workshops offered by our teachers uh additionally they're visiting New York City uh going on field trips to Cambridge and Boston and even attending a Celtics game uh and and they will return home on November 18th uh students from masanam will travel to W to reunite with their exchange Partners in February uh we want to thank high school Spanish teacher Jason Tierney for organizing this exchange

it's a lot of work uh this past November 2nd uh massic high school special education students uh took part in a unified kickball game with danver's public school students uh all who took part had fun sharing in the game alongside of their neurotypical Pew from both Danver and mascan and Masco was the DECA club that uh spearheaded this uh Unified sports are opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in sporting events with students who do not have disabilities uh the goals of Unified sports are to help students with disabilities feel included uh to spread awareness and to give all students who participate and experience that they will carry beyond the playing field plan is continue their relationship with Danver high school and to find additional opportunities to expand to other schools and in the uh

Dr mcmanis actually already alluded to this but we want to congratulate uh middle school English teacher Peter Wilson uh who attended the character.org National Conference in Washington DC on November 7th and 8th uh Mr Wilson was a guest of the conference's keynote speaker uh Steve Hartman of CBS News uh Mr Wilson uses Hartman's on the road segments in his classroom and has been working with him to promote the use of these videos as tools to teach students character traits such as empathy resilience honesty and compassion and actually for people who haven't been around long um in back in the fall of 2019 uh Peter Wilson wrote letter to Steve Hartman telling him about how he uses used these videos with the seventh grade students and how wonderful it was and how much of an impact

it was and it was just about a year this time in 2019 Steve Hartman showed up here uh and spent the day at the middle school with the seventh grade team so pretty neat so um he carried on this relationship and you know I think it's a it's a great uh experience that Mr Wilson can bring back to us about attending this conference uh we want to congratulate all of our fall athletic teams as they conclude their season uh here's a review of how each team fared um girls soccer uh they reached the division two final four where Unfortunately they lost three to2 on penalty kicks this was last night to Notre Dame and hangam uh girls soccer finished the regular season 15 0 and two and they won the Northeast conference uh boy soccer

lost at Oliver Ames in the division 2 round of 16 uh three to nothing uh they ended a successful season uh where we won the uh NEC dun Division and finished 133 uh cross country traveled to rentham on November 11th for the MIAA division 2A meet uh the boys placed uh 7th and qualified for the state finals which will be this Saturday at devans uh the girls team finished eighth just missing out on the State final birth uh the cheerleading team took second place at the division 2 North event at Bela high school on November 12th uh our field hockey team lost at nooba Regional in the round of 32 of their state tournament um the volleyball team lost to number two seed Al gonin in the round of 32 uh they we also added

a third level of volleyball this season so we have more students participating in volleyball than we ever have before uh football team has one game remaining at Bishop Fenwick that'll be Thanksgiving morning at 10: a.m. and the golf team won the NEC dun Division and Tyler feldberg qualified for the division 2 MIAA tournament and in golf we also added a JV team this season so again uh more participants which is great uh we also had four Mas gomic student athletes signed their letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers in college uh on November 8th we had the an event here in um in the gym which was also live streamed on Boxford cable uh we want to make sure we congratulate Bella Maura who's going to Penn State for gymnastics Hannah Coleman

who's going to Lindenwood University for lacrosse uh Lauren vogner who's going to marac college for soccer and Willa Peg Lani who's going to Providence College for swimming so great stuff and let's see what else uh got an open house uh talking about making sure we're trying to do what we can to uh let our eighth grade students know what we have in high school uh so the high school is going to be hosting an open house for families of current eighth graders uh on November 30th from 6:30 till 8:00 pm uh families who attend will learn about the high school's academic program our student services and our athletic and extracurricular programs and I one of the highlights of this is we have the uh our students uh run a a club and activities fair that

night um so people can get to talk to our kids about it they're our best salespeople so if you're if you're family of an eighth grader come on on um and let's see is this the last one yes so this Friday um will be the the next uh coffee with the administration so it'll be here at the high school uh with uh M dinardo and me um and we will be here at 8:30 on Friday morning through 9:30 so we be the high school high school coffee for January I got one more and just uh bear with me on this one so as we approach the winter season and possibly possibility of inclement weather I'm going to share our procedures uh for communicating school cancellations and delayed openings uh the procedures we have have been

developed in an effort to balance the needs of Staff members who commute uh to work from a distance and families of students who may need to arrange child care services for the day uh along with the request of families who do want don't want a f phone call at 5:30 in the morning um try to try to balance this um so the way we do this is uh first the first uh Communications and school cancellations go out through what I call passive means uh like social media uh and our Med outlets and then later on we have a direct phone uh telephone contact uh and email through blackboards communication systems um so all the media Communications uh will um sent out as soon as possible and before 5:30 in the morning it's always an early

morning on a snow day uh on the morning of the cancellation so um first and foremost X which used to be Twitter um and then all of our local channels uh WBZ TV WBZ Radio uh Channel 5 Channel 7 Channel 10 channel 25 uh and NECN and then also on the masanom website so those will all go up as early as possible uh and then uh we'll have our um Direct Communications um if we make if I make the decision to close on the night before you'll get that call prior to 8:30 um and then if we make the call on the morning of it'll be at six o'clock am so be ready any questions from Mike sorry um I just wanted to say the NL signing looked really good this year and um I

think that's a good opportunity to capitalize in good publicity so thank you for that and then a Unified sports question because I know that's something you the administration's been working on is there a possibility to like do regionalized like like not just Masco but like have our athletes with a couple different small yeah there there are other schools that are doing this Lynn do you any other info on it I know this it's there's no formal league right now or anything like that so it's all kind of informally well it's it's individual districts setting up individual play with individuals so there's not a um it says unified but it's not Regional okay but but they're on the Mia there's UniFi teams on the Mia website isn't there not that I there's no unified leagues that

I know of it's all of the schools that I know of are are actually kind of doing this on the Fly I think there's a unified track more than happy to look deeper into that because great way to expand it right because I think they have unified track meets that's the only reason unified track meets I didn't know that they there there's an MIA link Mia link for unified basketball and unified tracking field cool okay I know I know John Delan was also working on this too um but as far as I knew most of sort of athletic director to athletic director or student services departments getting together and saying hey let's set up a game it's a neat thing yeah question I I'll just make we are participating in the Spanish exchange and it

is the most outstanding experience and so many of the points that came up in Phil's presentation about cultural awareness and Global and context uh for the students it's been such an incredible experience for I think the whole Community not just f who are hosting um Pro Tierney and pro bonano who are working on this are really going the extra mile it's an enormous body of work for them very cool great all right now we have subcommittee reports so um do anyone gonna oh there's zly are you gonna give a community relations update I can start and then someone else has to do today so we had two meetings since our last regular meeting November 3rd and then tonight which I was not at tonight's um but just on the November 3 uh Mike came and

we're kind of strategizing communication plan especially around the capital plan and the Strategic plan uh so that um with kender's help we can have some graphics that go with specific topics that the community would be interested in as Mike produces content so the hope is that most content is coming that comes from Mike the topics that we think people might have the most questions about we will try to push out in a more intentional way to the community um and then also the other piece of that or two others one is the get uh how do I know where to go question we're going to keep working on doing better at letting the community know know who they should be going to with different types of questions um that includes us knowing what's for us

to answer and what's to refer somebody to a District staff member to answer and lastly is we talked about maybe having we haven't we didn't get into the details of this but just the idea of doing something where uh there's a for of some kind with the um mid-level administrators in the district so that we can who they are even if it's starting just with us as a school committee um I think that there's been a little bit just enough turnover that maybe we don't necessarily know who people are so the department heads always come to one of our budget sub meetings but um we could include facilities and um uh Security in that and maybe have a little bit of a better connection just kind of knowing who it is who people are in

the building for us for our sake so we feel confident what's going on did I get it all you guys that we're there yeah I think all right and then if you guys have anything else just add it when you when you fill everybody in on what happened tonight because I was not there yes I would say there were um a few big pieces one we heard from several members of the community um just a greater need to share um and make clear where public meeting information is held so everyone can know outside of Facebook posts um where and when meetings are being held so really something that we will come back to um as a continued Challenge and something that we want to just thoughtful about um we also heard a lot of questions

around uh Turf versus grass um and members just shared um some concerns that they had and thinking that they had around um Turf and grass they had some deeper um conversation in specific questions that we as as a committee will Circle back to to see if we need um to use our or other modes of communication just to clarify um some I think were answered in our conversation earlier and um lastly one member shared um just a concern about uh special education support especially coming from the elementary school um and thinking ahead up through mascow um she o shared concern about uh school rankings um fairly quickly so I think definit definitely more food for thought for us to consider as we really refine these topics in the communication plan just to ensure there's some

natural integration but I think there's also some additional um thinking that we'll do together in our next meeting great thank you um next up we have DCI yep so um we have not me since our last full committee meeting meeting the meeting before that we went into the category 3 discussion and the general consensus was we needed to have a more interactive meeting with the administration order to start making decisions on what the biggest priorities really are we also had a discussion on timing um trying to map out when do we spend Capital when can we spend Capital when does it make sense and do we try to synchronize Category 3 needs with category one needs for instance so toward that end we've got our next meeting scheduled for Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. here

on campus so we can go through this in further detail specifically with Jeff um so that's that's what's up next youill anti-racism um with travel schedule's been challenging to to get a get a time together but we tentatively scheduled one for for next week um hopefully Monday if that works with Jeff's calendar um uh which would be at the central office great not Monday then Tuesday thank you um Trevor policy um so we are going to be meeting uh Friday November 17th at 10:30 a.m. and we are continuing reviewing section to review section I it should be the last meeting on I and then probably not next meeting but the following I think it's December 13th maybe we can get that in front of all of you um and it's going to be a lot

because we have we only took one chunk out to vote as a full committee so um definitely be prepared to prepare um and then that's it for policy um any leas on updates I should say there's no negotiations on here but we are know on there I will add that for the next one because we are starting to meet again but we are have a meeting scheduled for Monday um one two o'clock one one o'clock sorry one two all right Le on updates the only information Middleton I mean that I want to bring to the table there I'll attend the next meeting but you know it's really around the financial particulars of of of turfa all right um just I mentioned it earlier me and Kendra had met with Sarah from uh the Masco Sports

foundation and we went through the documents on our website to find out which ones um need updating what in them needs to be updated and I don't know if Mike you would have the original because they're in like PDF format so you can't edit them I don't know who would mayasha the original of what like there's one like timeline one with contact information document of turf up I don't know let me look I think Tasha made that okay I recommend keeping the old versions on there for continuity and just put new ones on right well a lot of it's like checkbox we made it to this step so an arch add there just adding check boxes show where we've been and then it's simple contact information and we want to also put in that there

is a new 501c3 it's pretty big so we have work to do on our end which one are you looking at TR um I a second the reports yeah the reports are all PDF and most of those came right from Stant right there's one we produced if it's the history then I'm pretty certain that Tasha created I no that's my work remember overiew yeah that's you or me that was that's yeah you can um contact figure out what needs to be changed you s Trevor why don't you send the two of us an email with what you're talking about and then we can tell you if we have they headed up in the meeting I don't know where when this I would just the history and updates one so while while we're talking about the

aison first like we have the November 29th meeting scheduled where we've invited the towns to come so if you are liaison if you wouldn't mind sending out your town members your town boards a reminder of that meeting you want to be copied on that Melissa yeah if you could um I got a response from one but I'll send it out again I would generally recommend that you you copy your other your fellow Middleton members I did or your town members okay so on the Boxford front we've uh We've initiated a monthly Breakfast Club um the first one was going to be at Christine's house but she got pneumonia so we ended up doing it uh on the Fly changing the venue but um uh there was a member of the select board a member of

the Conservation Commission and a member of there and uh you know we talked a lot about Capital plans we talked about Turf we talked about you name it and generally speaking I think they're fairly supportive of of what we're looking for from a capital perspective they just want to see that we are planning it properly and there's a proper level of oversight and that they're getting plenty of heads up on everything we're talking about about so they're well aware of the November 29th meeting we mentioned it at that at that session um but yeah I mean I thought it was a great meeting and and um you just trying to get a good spirit of cooperation going and it seemed to go quite well I thought and good so keep those up it's good to

have that outage and similarly we have the Topsfield listening session on Saturday which right is um going to be attending for us since I will be yeah in Fort Devin um and Sil not available so um thank you Bill and we'll we can give an update after next meeting about that looking forward to it all right any other updates for sub committees so okay next on our agenda is the consent agenda so as you everyone knows if there's something that you want withdraw you need to tell me before we we start reading it so going to read the consent agenda which is approval of the October 25th 2023 minutes warrants in the amount of 3,919 2285 cents which has been signed since 10223 and accepting an MEF Grant in the amount of 77 $775 and

that is for a trout classroom which is if you read it it's teaching with trouts was actually a very interesting thing um so all we have to do is say I right I think we need a motion need a motion we need a motion and then I thought we didn't have to but that's okay I'll move to accept the consent need a motion in a sec all right so all in favor say I I I any against any extensions consent agenda passes and at 9:28 oh yes we are sorry let's roll that back zil on Zoom apologize zilly we actually have to do a roll call vote sorry to make you guys have to do it so I'm gonna start with Christine Dominic hi SE Andra hi um Bill hi Trevor yes Erica Matt yes

Joe and I'm a yes so that and zilly M so yes oh it's not it's 9:30 at night my brain is gone um I have to do a roll call toj no uh yeah you do because okay so at this time I'd like to adjourn the meeting so I need a motion to adjourn Mo just go back okay so uh Erica made the motion and Matt second it so I'm gonna start with you zilly hi Kendra hi Bill yes Trevor yes Erica hi Matt Joe y yes yes Dominic yes yes right you everybody have a lovely Thanksgiving and 21 people coming to my house nice
