hmm i got the livestream i hear something okay thank you um good evening everyone um silly boujou calling to order our masculine regionals wednesday april 6 2022 at 7 03 p.m first item is a public hearing on school choice participation for the 2022-2026 school year and i'm inviting harvey yeah so annually the way the state statute is written around school choice is that all schools are assumed to be participating unless they opt out so that's the question that we'll be considering later in the meeting but as far as to start off um we will take public comments but just give you a sort of a brief overview of where we are for school choice these are the numbers as they currently stand by grade level so you can see that we have eight students in

grade nine three students in grade 10 and one student in grade 12. i believe last year the one student in grave 12 was the only student who actually came to us in school choice so i think we uh okay we did grade 12 and one other grade i think seven yeah yeah was the vote from last year um so you can see we did not have any students who chose to enroll in grade 7 last year the other piece of data just for everyone to consider is our current and projected enrollments for next year uh you can see uh pretty steady grade seven to two grade nine uh increase of four students uh grade eight is a change uh right now we have a bubble class basically in grade eight at 321. uh we're projecting

to 91 next year for uh grade eight uh that 321 students will progress into grade 9 next year we are projecting a decrease in that number of students 282 and that's consistent with what we see as numbers of students that go to private schools uh for grade nine uh and this year we have 225 students so even even with that decrease it's still a pretty sizable uh year to year increase um and generally you can see the upper grades as as they currently uh stand uh i generally don't recommend that we consider uh school choice for anything oh past grade nine um really kind of gets to the full program uh as a natural entry point in ninth grade and the same goes for seventh grade so that's uh where we are right now with

school choice thank you um so before i kind of set the stage for it just to know if i need to is there anyone here who's interested in speaking for the public hearing on school choice or asking a question i i mean my general recommendation is grade seven and nine that's what i would would say again for next year uh the number if we look at first grade roughly 300 is what this the teams are built for um so i would say again [Music] at the most 13 students in grade 7 um and then grade 9 is a little trickier because it is a larger class than than what's typical for the rest of the school but i would say probably spend 10 students there but again in that one i could i could persuade

to say nine's pretty pretty large as it is so okay um so since we don't have anyone okay um we don't have it doesn't i don't see anybody uh looking to speak for the public hearing on school choice participation this does come later in our agenda to the school back to the school committee for our just deliberation and vote [Applause] full choice participation for next year and everyone's going to be totally shocked to hear that i don't have open remarks tonight [Applause] so we are moving on to comments from the audience so again some friendly faces here that's interested in public so just a reminder to stand sort of near the microphone there and let us know what town you're from your name a couple minutes usually but it's my name is julie cave um

my daughter and i are here tonight to offer you guys a unique opportunity to shed some light on some issues here at moscow after all you can't fix a problem you're unaware of it as many of you know my family abruptly moved from oxford to new hampshire not do this for job growth or financial reasons we move solely to offer access to better education to our daughters you see many families like mine fall through the cracks here at moscow after three years watching multiple friends pull their children from this district we begin to see our daughter was also falling through those same cracks and her friends were receiving better opportunities in the districts they moved to we have returned to raise awareness on some of these issues and hope you will listen and work to

find ways to fix these problems for the students that are currently here so they no longer feel stuck forgotten i will be addressing this from the parent issue my daughter would like to speak after to address some of the student issues the first issue is that not every family is wealthy a lot of assumptions are made that when you move to this area that you will be paying for your kids college the policies that are in place have made it quite hard for students to get ahead policies have blocked uh policies block students from building their transcripts for a better chance of financial aid or scholarships every common avenue offered at other schools for some reason is not offered here at moscow blue enrollment a program where you take one class or two and receive

college or high school credit at masco basically means you unenroll from your senior year and take all your classes at the community college students are no longer allowed to double up their classes so if your child wanted to take geometry in algebra so they could take calculus their senior year can't do that anymore so it used to have a summer class that was offered for geometry that is no longer offered as well summer classes are now only under recovery credit every door has been shut that allows students of lower financial needs to push forward and possibly ease the financial burdens to enter college another issue that i have seen is that what does math will offer for those children who are not interested in going to college the answer we got was go to the

tech great what happens if my child doesn't get into the tech okay there are no current pathways listed in your program of studies for non-four-year college degrees blue-collar jobs or even degrees in a medical field students are simply forgotten and slipped through those cracks the last thing i want to bring to your attention tonight is that many parents have asked for course material and outlines of what is being taught and when it is being taught while books are sent home and is greatly appreciated we have found more often than not that books are not being used and with no outline parents are left in the dark these parents want to help their children learn but need some guidance to do so after all how many times do you get the answer nothing when you ask

what did you do in school today i think a curriculum night at the beginning of the school year would solve a lot of this issue where books and articles are laid out for parents to look at and an outline is given on what units are taught in each class this way parents can be proactive to support their children example if you know a unit of quadratic functions is coming up in math you would take time knowing that your child might struggle with this ahead of that unit to make sure they're on the right path i think this would also go a long way in building back better mental health for our students parents they are able to start discussions about books their children are reading or may be able to ask their child their opinion

on a history topic they are learning about it could help ease the stress and anxiety we are seeing in a lot of our students my daughter is here to talk more about those anxieties and stresses that she faced firsthand and her friends are still troubling with thank you julie absolutely yeah so just let us know your name please when you when you get there hello my name is laura liu i'm a current sophomore and former student of moscow um i'm nervous i talk really fast so i can even slow down just say so um to put it simply masco is chaos i found it very hard to succeed at masco i thought that all high schools function on a rigid system classes here are taught in only 45 minutes usually enough time for a teacher

to lecture and explain the work but when we get home we still have the classroom to finish and then we have our homework to finish normally my week consisted of upwards of four to six hours of homework a day not to mention the kids who have jobs after school sports and clubs often i stayed up to one to two am every night just to finish the bare minimum of homework so the next day i would get up and find something to drink with immense amounts of caffeine or sugar to drink so i could get through just a few of my first classes in our recent yearbook there is a pool for the typical masco student the list made by your students consists of words like and i quote anxious depressed fake a majority of the

students here feel this way that should never be the case not in a workplace definitely not a school not anywhere and how did they get that way one example is when grades close you could have an a and then when they open back again you could have a d or even an f that alone is beyond stressful and nerve wracking because multiple assignments could be entered after the grade portal would close leaving students no opportunity to go talk to their teachers in middle school we are told honors classes are very hard we are not particularly encouraged to take them and minimal eighth graders know exactly what they want to be when they grow up or what classes to take when you do decide it's virtually impossible to get ahead as my mother mentioned there was

no discussion about what i want to do in the future or how best to get there here are some anonymous direct quotes from kids um this one comes from a current student mascot um kids here are judgey there's no doubt about that i have two years left of this blank but i just want to get it done another quote from a current student the amount of work they give you and the pressure attests and if you don't pass you get looked down upon always making you feel stressed about work and losing self-confidence when the teachers say you are not good enough the student test is next to nothing another from a former mascot student that is currently a sophomore student-teacher relationships are not close the difference i noticed in my school is the guidance counselors

are a lot more involved and they tend to focus on both class registration and mental health and what decisions are best for student mentally another issue at moscow is the social aspect the environment is very negative you keep your head down and don't answer questions about the real issues going on in today's world because if your opinion doesn't match those around you you will be bullied or looked down upon there is nothing the adults have done to stop this socially students get labeled by their peers and aren't forced to accept a label here's a quote from a current student at moscow i was bullied all my freshman year because i wasn't gay and i ended up getting kicked out of my friend group and lost my closest friends for not being gay even though i

really supported them another issue with labels is the issue of mixed race one day my sister came home from school and asked me if she was half bad because she is half white she watched a video in class about it this made me open my eyes and realized the topic of missed race is not addressed in any of the schools at masco i was labeled the race i resemble and not the race i actually am instead of understanding the fact that people can be more than one race they automatically label you i'm here to help current students who can't leave and are too afraid to ask speak up after leaving masco i realize it is very clear that this is not how high school should be i leave with a quote from another student that

really resonated with me and just trying to get through the day except that's every day thank you not hook too long oh yeah that's okay forget your name for this hi trevor carrier from middleton sorry i'm going through like allergy season um but i want to just talk about um the proposed requirement of adding art classes to graduation requirements um i'm against this just because um i even look back through my old transcript um from here from last year and i took um half of all of my i took half of the studies cloud so i took like four out of the eight semesters for the studies um and you're proposing five art credits which would make it so i had two open semesters basically which i don't think is enough time for students um

and just because arts offered in the middle school are required in the middle school at least for me i found out pretty early on that i'm not an artist and don't want to pursue that path um so i think this is putting a size fits all solution when students could be taking business classes any other electives that they see more fit and geared towards that so thank you [Applause] anybody else okay thanks everyone item e which is tonight we are [Applause] representative to the essex north shore agricultural open technical school through december 31st 2024 and we did invite mr gohani tonight to attend are you here okay i did see can we get back he said he would be attending so perhaps he's late oxford reps do you want to kind of table this until

later in case he shows up or do you want to i'm sure okay so we'll just table that if um delaney arrives uh so raquel wave is our student advisory board representative tonight and welcome myself um your time to share good evening everyone i'm raquel rave the sab at large thank you for allowing me to speak tonight on behalf of the student body as we transition into the end of the school year the student council has been working on various fundraisers such as raising money for the ukraine crisis i worked with the international rescue committee and with the help of fellow peers we were able to raise over a thousand dollars to the cause it was incredible to see our school come together for a great purpose and we are hoping to connect with more

amazing organizations in the future furthermore i'm excited to announce that our 2022 to 2023 student elections have officially begun this week the candidates are going to announce their speeches in front of their classes and from there their classmates are going to vote it is sad to watch our seniors leave but at the same time i am excited to see what the future holds for our upcoming underclassmen in the new ideas they can bring to the student council overall students have been maintaining their focus as we push through these last few months thank you again and have a great rest of your night thank you raquel and i apologize that i pronounced your last name wrong that's okay ravi um does anyone have any questions kids all came home with the yellow and blue ribbon guys

um questions okay so we'll move on to uh g is our vision 2025 showcase tonight's is the english department so this is hildebrand i believe is here hi welcome thank you well they're getting set up for anyone who might not already know this is something that we started this year showcasing things that are happening at costco that we would like to see more of and grow and expand upon many different departments to share all right thanks for having me um so i'm glad i went later in the year it gave me some time to be in a postcovid moment to kind of um bring together some things that have maybe always happened in the english department but perhaps um some new things that are happening as well so i decided to highlight just the general

instructional practices that you would find here um walking through the school i tried to highlight all grade levels and then tried to choose things that were not just one-off types of situations i think that happens sometimes where i can show you a lot of really cool projects that happen in one particular class but i tried to highlight some things that in different capacities happen in a lot of different ways um so i actually scrolled down i know we have our vision statements and that's what we look at a lot but what we often don't scroll down and look at is where we created those those vision statements from um and it was from our actually our values and beliefs and these are just kind of three of the statements that built into that that feed

our vision statements and these came from everywhere it came from students it came from faculty it came from teachers administrators um so i just found it easier to kind of go through the pieces of this to make some categories to kind of highlight instead of picking out specific vision statements hope that's okay went a little broke um so i kind of pulled some things into some areas here so one of the major areas we've discussed here many times in our schools in general is that we want to have interdisciplinary real world and personal connections um so the ways that we go about this in english class are are vast but i've pulled together some very specific things i have a lot of picture slides so i'll i'll give a second for the bullets and then

i'll really talk about them through the pictures um we do various projects that last all the time but then we have some things this year that were particularly really nice once we came back from post covered year so some things that we do from this slide and into the next one um so in terms of teaching writing something that uh the social studies and english department have paired together on a lot but then also you'll see some science examples and some some world language examples are how we teach writing to students we learned that we were all using very different terms um for teaching things and so we kind of tried to starting in seventh grade and then again in ninth grade really highlight how we specifically wanted to teach this um so here you

see an example from social studies class and then an example i'm having to do with like the environmental impact how humans have an environmental impact both of these other classes in seventh grade we had paired together english the english teachers on the team to make sure we were teaching the same lingo claim evidence reasoning um and then that happens again in ninth grade where our social studies and english teachers have worked hard to come up with some of similar rubrics similar language um to to make sure that students are hearing the same things when they cross classes but a topic sentence in english means a topic sentence in social studies because that's something we didn't really have in recent years some other things that you'll see up here the picture of the students working together

it was awesome um our morning update uh teaching chronicle which can kind of speak for itself under the gui on the guidance of miss side and she's wonderful um they do an amazing job of producing obviously in digital and writing all the things that we have but this is an example where they were called to task to go into some french classes um where they french classes were launching a campaign down to the elementary schools and they wanted to know how to do a good kind of campaign so our students went and worked with them and helped them come up with their commercials and their ads that they were going to use um similar that you see here we talk about propaganda a lot not just in social studies but in english happens in science

classes as well so we try and pull those things in this particularly was for a lord of applies assignment but this is some in ninth grade but this is something that kind of happens across grades and current day kind of comes into play when we talk about the role of the media in storytelling because that happens quite a bit continuing on with those topics we have our chieftain chronicle which is great our morning update which continued to go strong we really had to bob and weave kazakhovic and not having homeroom now et cetera but again the siding and her students have been wonderful and kind of figuring that out um another example of where we're trying to kind of cross current day historical figures other subjects we have like the crucible here this is an

argument mapping activity argument mapping is something we do in the entire high school but mostly in the upper grades a lot this is an example from the class um miss murphy's class actually who happens to be sitting right here this evening for another reason um so this would be from her class where you can correct me if i'm wrong or just don't let me go um they worked together on a topic for the class which was connect a fictional character from the crucible to a cold war era famous person that fit the same archetype they worked together as a class up on the board to create this before they then had to go off and do it for themselves with um their own characters does that speak to it well awesome great okay um and

then another example which is an awesome one that just came this year into our global classes senior year francis frastic writing is writing inspired by a visual work of art and so miss delmonico actually had all of her global students do this amazing project that we hope to highlight here sometime soon where they worked together as a class to look at the role of media images like visual media of all forms um and kind of studying it studying journalism in that light as well um but then they each had to choose their own image um to not only do the research behind it they had to choose something that was from um some global crisis of some kind um and obviously a lot of students ended up choosing ukraine because that's happening currently uh they

had to choose an image from that time they had to do all the research behind it not literally what was hap just happening in the image or where it came from but then they ended up finding out sometimes that the picture and what the media uses it for isn't all it doesn't always line up um they had to do the research on the crisis that it was coming from and then they had to do a sort of response to it many of them chose to do poetry of some kind or some sort of response in writing to it so it was a pretty cool project that they did again we hope to highlight it here perhaps sometime soon for other classes to come and see because that was a pretty awesome one um things that

are learner focused so we try really hard to do this obviously in the english department we can't just let everybody choose their own books all the time so everybody would love that um but we do try and find things that let students kind of take the lead in as many ways as possible um so when it comes down to it there are a lot of ways to do it you see at the bottom i just talk about choice we really try and implement that wherever possible whether it comes into lit circles or topics for a project um or even maybe who they work with or when um we try and kind of make it possible wherever we can but some other examples of things that we try and highlight here so um we have scavenger

hunts and escape rooms which i don't have any real pictures for uh one just happened down here in the library the other day there might still be some there were some clues up here the last time i was in here um so that's something that has become popular since escape rooms became a thing which is in recent years um but here's an example of kind of like one of the scavenger hunt questions from lord of the flies it asks the students to kind of take something from the text the teachers work pretty hard to come up with activities that can kind of go along with this um while we will never pretend to be as amazing as the english english the art department uh we do use artwork and pen to paper as much as

we possibly can so here are some examples of artwork that students did but it's it's a great way for students to present their knowledge that's that perhaps struggle verbally or in writing to be able to show and demonstrate um so we do that informally and formally as much as possible if you walk into any english room you will be able to find coloring supplies at the ready um because this is something that we often try and highlight we teach all forms of writing uh obviously um but something that students tend to take to is persuasive writing they love to pick a topic and write to somebody to tell them about it dr harvey gets lots of them um miss dr mcmanus also got this one about everyone i mean their hook is great like imagine

this it's friday afternoon in may it's eight degrees and sunny you want to go outside and stuck in the sun but you can't you are occasionally auditory so they were waiting for a good speaker that they wanted to come um another student that i somebody just wrote to me and told me about it um and i saw it actually posted on facebook the student wrote to a local burger joint they ended up getting like a gift card to it it was a whole great thing so um we always try and find ways that students are writing but maybe they don't know that they're learning how to do you know certain types of writing all the time um socratic seminars we have a picture of one in the top right corner right here um this is

kind of a staple of the english department the teacher steps their way out of it they are not really involved at all they are an observer the center circle has to speak on any given topic they have to talk to each other they have to ask each other questions there's usually a prompt that goes along with it or some quotes the outside circle has to observe they can write things down but they can't interject they switch sometimes they switch topics sometimes they stay on the same one um we kind of build upon this from middle into high school so that hopefully by the time they're seniors the teacher is totally out of it um but we kind of teach them along the way how to participate in these types of dialogues in a professional and

respectful and courteous way portfolios i've always highlighted for you the eighth grade portfolio project which that is a picture of but quite honestly at the heart of portfolios is students compiling work that they've done over a period of time and then reflecting on it in some way and that is something we consistently are asking students to do whether it's formal informal to look back at what they've done and then be able to see and talk about and write about where they have progressed where they maybe still want to go and be proud of the work that they've accomplished as well and lastly collaboration and teamwork um we try and do this whenever possible and sometimes they hate it i can tell you how many times when we say like all right get up and we're

gonna do something and the collective groan is great um but we still believe that that's what we're after here is for students especially after covid um to be able to be making connections finding ways to work together and oftentimes work together on hard things i feel like a lot of the things that i highlighted here um aren't always easy for them to do which is why it's important for them to maybe figure out how to work together another these are all more examples of the teacher kind of stepping their way out of it um and the students having to work through it a little bit on their own so i've got lots of examples to it so i'm sorry um so we make maps often this may seem silly um but students will often tell

me it was the hardest thing that we did because having to read the setting that sets you up in the beginning of a novel and then be able to visualize it and actually make a map and put it down on paper is highly difficult um and and to have it be accurate so to take all the clues that the the author gives you and be able to then put it down on paper is quite hard so we have two examples actually here one from ninth grade one from eleventh grade um where they're kind of asked to do the same thing and then oftentimes these are what's hung around the room to be able to refer to like when scout walked to bus house you know what did that and that was significant later in the

text where did they kind of go um some other examples that we have up here are kind of working together and doing some things um working in groups to research and present on a time period is an off is something that we often do um and other things that we have so we have the character analysis um so something that often happens so we have sociograms on the next stage what will happen is you'll have a group working together to accomplish a task like the example here come up with a character analysis of i believe this was from actually oh a separate piece um so come up with a character use a visual once again and work together to highlight all the keys of that character um annotating skills are important always in life this

is something no matter where we go like you should be able to read something and dissect it in some way we have two examples um where one is a little bit more specific to the text whereas the other one i believe yeah later school start time we all know this one here well uh a later school start time is better for adolescent health and learning so here's another example of working together as a class um to build a an argument and then come up with together what you what that would look like in writing before they're then sent off to do their own topics having to do with the text and some more examples here um another popular uh instructional strategy that we have is to have the students be the discussion leaders or the

experts on chapters um so that usually means something like this you see right here for the hate you give where you're like assigned a section or a chapter and then you're asked to um teach that that chapter to the class that day one that i love highlighting right here is this the bottom left the activities examples tab um that looks like something great that a teacher created yeah that that's a group of students that that was their activity that they decided to do for the day for their peers um so again it's one of those things they grumble about in the beginning but then once they get after it it usually comes out very well and they end up kind of having a lot of ownership um for what they've been able to do for

and with their peers um sociograms is a visual representation of the relationship among characters in a text and so that's what you see kind of in this bottom right again it's just a different visual way to do it than just sitting there and talking about it or writing it down students move around to different places in the room similar to the top left there might be a question to answer there might be a character to analyze um and they kind of move around do it together and then often it's something that leads to a greater discussion later in class which might be with everybody or why not um something i just wanted to highlight of all the things that i just told you about you often hear us as department heads come here and ask

you for money for things so the teacher and student focus pd that made this all possible is here um in 2018 we had an argument mapping um professional development that was awesome um it was presenters from thinker analytics that came in so these are all things that are student teacher focused so immediately teachers were able to then go use argument mapping um same with socratic seminar we had lynn laffy from product seminars international ran two sessions for english and social studies teachers where she came in she made teacher teachers of the worst students um she came and she made teachers do the socratic seminar activities um and then again they were able to go right out from there and as you can see it's something that we've continued to have and then beth hughes is

a teacher extraordinaire she speaks at mass queue where a lot of our teachers go and do professional development we brought her in here to do some sessions with us in may 2019 and that was centered around um how to give students more choice in an english classroom and that's what we continue to try and strive for as well um the last thing i want to highlight we do have two kind of honors as the english department that i want to bring up uh malia robinson who's a junior submitted some of her poetry to the scholastic arts and writing awards and she won five honorable mentions and one silver key we unlike the art department we don't send a bunch off it's kind of up to the students we encourage them a lot but it's more

kind of up to them individually so she did this herself which was awesome and then i will not take all the thunder that is coming from dr c later but we did have ava who i believe is here tonight who's a junior um poetry out loud is something i've spoken to you about a lot many times in the past it is again miss murphy who happens to be here tonight um leads it for us it is a a national recitation contest that we this year had 571 students participate at the classroom level and then we have our school-wide competition and then that winner goes on and on to compete and i will not take the thunder away from dr c but ava went farther than we've ever had a mascot student go before which is

pretty spectacular that [Applause] it's sounding like there's a lead up that there might be an opportunity later to recognize ava dr c and i did not collaborate and realize we were both gonna so i'll let her do that this is a lot i know i'm sorry i'm a fast talker that was slow and no i mean it was amazing there's a lot of great stuff going on in your classrooms and i just i'm gonna digest and i'm going to send you questions i'm sorry i flooded you with pictures but it's right i love that so it's better it's just the best way to highlight i mean and obviously these things don't happen every day right there's some days where you're going to walk into an english class and the teachers at the front and they're

all talking about things and you know we're going over the characters and the summary or i'm talking at you about topic sentences so it's not like these things are the things that are happening every day um but i would argue that if you walked around seven through twelve on the course of the week you would see these types of things somewhere they'll be working towards these types of activities at one phase or another going on and i wish i had an hour and i would highlight all the more things for you but just kind of this is great looking at your pictures and i'm like oh that's my family there i thought that was you it is you right i mean that looks like melissa that was from freakover because we haven't had a portfolio

day i don't even remember when it was [Applause] yeah there's a lot to absorb there all right i changed the size on my thing so i could see her slides now i need to go back dr c your c is a lot easier we're all waiting for that chance to really applaud yes one moment and we'll be applauding yep good evening everybody uh it's great to be here and it's great to highlight some of the really terrific accomplishments of our students and i feel fortunate to do that tonight so i am going to ask ava behringer to come on up with miss murphy come and stand because i always feel like they stand way over there and you can't see them come over and stand um so i would like to acknowledge uh the poetry

out loud competition so ms hildebrand explained a little bit about this competition and we did have 571 students um compete in the initial school based round that was 34 different english classes so these are english teachers who commit to this competition i was an accuracy judge at the business festival yes and i had a really good teacher and i was able to practice in her classroom one day to make sure that i did an okay job but we had 571 students 34 different classes from there we went to sort of 25 students so that was sort of our school based you know our second level round two competition and that was judged by a panel of faculty um and then from there ava was chosen as our winner to represent masconomic um as in the

state competition so it was a virtual competition this year um hopefully it'll be in person next year perhaps um but she was selected in the top nine of the state in the next state round and then was named the state champion poetry out loud um winner of you guys standing there from this angle just because sometimes i think of it later thank you okay good for our blog yes um she met with her state representative who she received a commendation from the house of representatives presented at your home um and so that's a really exciting thing right and so you should hold on to that because they're not easy to come by and it is uh well earned and deserved and so we applaud your accomplishments and she will be competing in the next round

in may 1st national semi finals which will also be virtual and we'll have a link that we can share so everyone can share evoc yes put it in the mascara so we'll have it we'll make sure we get it out to the larger community but it really is exciting um as a result the school uh was awarded 500 uh to be [Applause] um for um resources related to poetry and we have a number of sections of poetry running next year so we'll be able to put it to good use um and i'm sure that that award will come to you through um it will come through the school committee through the gifts donation so uh that was just received in hand today so that's awesome ava thank you very much [Applause] i love the fun

moments earlier in i think it was january or february when miss manheim was here and talked a lot about the scholastic art awards and the students that received various awards sort of at the state level so i'd like to call up emeline king [Applause] so the scholastic arts and writing competition is the longest running recognition for creativity for teens and uh emma lines uh the received a gold key at the state level which allowed her to go on to the national competition uh where she received a silver medal uh in the national competition for her it's called it's a color christmas illustration it's called paint like goggles very exciting to to be recognized uh for your work and um we really applaud your work and we appreciate you representing [Applause] it really does and i

i saw and uh i saw it in um this manheim's classroom too it's really pretty to see so um so i think james gamatos is here tonight and brooke silvano is here tonight if you can come on up that would be great unfortunately eva jefferson is not able to be here tonight um so this is our sixth congressional district competition so the way this competition works is the masconomic arts department picks six works of arts that they forward along into this competition and then they are judged by an outside panel and so i'm here tonight uh to recognize brooke who received the best of school award for masking on it in the sixth congressional district [Applause] yeah so mine's a um graphite so i use like number two pencil wow okay colored pencils great so

again another arch recognition um and again miss manheim presented a lot of the scholastic award winners back in january at the state levels like another arts competition where our kids are competing and i think you know one of the things as a school to it's one thing to be recognized within our building but to send our work out and have others acknowledge the great work that our students do is really commendable thank you for your artistry thank you thank you thank you you know what i'm going to ask you sorry thank you and also brooke's um brooke's title there what the world is now like i feel like what you're doing right here like this is also what the world needs now so thank you guys thank you thank you so [Applause] are a lot

of students much don't get recognition for the awesome work they do um outside of this building but if you walk the art hallway there is some gorgeous art and some really cool trees that were out for a while one pair of which i feel like they should reach out to the company and make so should get the they should get the patent on it first before they do it but again just to acknowledge all of our students here tonight thank you so much for coming you can you can go if you want to stay for the rest of the night no one will be offended thank you thank you and i do just want to acknowledge the teachers role in all of this and the department chairs role in all of this because they're an

integral part of ensuring that our students have these opportunities and again the passion for the poetry uh that miss murphy instills in her students is what allows them to have the confidence to stand up in front of people and deliver it was really an amazing thing to watch and to hear our students um recite their poetry so i appreciate it and i applaud them as well so all right so just a little bit about ongoing work um so the final exam schedule is out and it was published in my masco memo on uh sunday and really it's basically an exam period that takes us over the last four days of school embedded in there are opportunities for students to receive extra help embedded in there our students to check in with their teachers if they

owe us anything embedded in there is makeup time if something happens and a student is unable to be here for a day so hopefully that students can finish up and we have very few students going into the summer with a incomplete um hanging over their head which is never a fun experience to have as a student and as a teacher the work we having those outstanding having that outstanding work waiting to either correct and or to come in can be pretty um stressful so this is out and unlike my semester exam schedule back in january people seem to like this one so far [Laughter] um some of the other ongoing work i'm just trying to see if i this isn't my most recent slide deck but that's okay um senior internships so our seniors left

today and went off into uh many of them i should say uh went off into their internships they officially start on the 11th about 10 of our students are not participating for one reason or another about 15 of our seniors are taking aps and are remaining because they have such a they have kind of a higher number of aps that precludes them maybe because of our waterfall schedule from really sort of really going and fully participating although some of those students are participating in volunteer or other opportunities after so they will still have an opportunity to do something they just can't fully participate just because of some of their class requirements um based on what they're taking just to um give you a i didn't name any of the companies in this particular slide but

just saw the internships um i talked to a young man today told me he was going to work for a tax accountant doesn't sound very interesting as you can tell me but it's one of his interests i civil finance is a good thing to do so i was happy about that uh we have some day video game creator uh working at law offices big shop teaching is working as a teaching assistant working with a plumber with mechanics other areas of finance beyond the tax accountant sales we have a lot of kids working in sales medical sales we have one student who's going to an internship at the state house so again sort of a wide diverse range a pretty diverse range of activities that they're participating in so they were pretty excited today signing out

their paperwork i got to be there uh the um institute for savings was there today and did this great um presentation on the good the bad and the ugly about credit cards is really what it came down to um and i i learned a few things in it actually and um i think it was really informative um so it was it was good messaging as students think about that going off to college um they had a crazy statistic that like more kids will graduate from college with three thousand dollars in credit card debt then graduate um we'll leave college with credit card debt and actually graduate from college it's like a weird number that most kids are gonna leave college with crazy credit card debt so i think the messaging came home but maybe that

wasn't the best thing uh to do to get why you should get a credit card but why you don't want to abuse a credit card so it was a nice balance of eating a credit history versus going into debt um what else is going on so we're in the process so most of our course requests have come in from students and we are in the process of sort of examining um classes and how many sections we are going to need of each class that works actually going to take place in earnest uh with myself and the department chairs on friday and then from there we'll start the build with the schedule and then i'll be back in june if we have any classes that fall below our minimum and we feel a strong inclination to

run that class uh the world language department it was alluded to um meg killer brand alluded to the fact that the media communications class was working with our world language students to create public service announcements so high school and middle school students have been going to the thai town elementary schools and sort of pitching why learning perhaps french or chinese or some other language besides spanish might be uh be of interest to students so it was a psa a video that was created that they showed but there was also talk about culture and language um and and where certain languages are spoken francophone languages for example are spoken all over the world but sometimes we lose sight of that and so sort of stressing um the importance of considering all of our language offerings as

you make your way into the middle school so i think that um was a fairly productive trip beyond masculine athletic recognition so that's going to take on place on may 4th that's our second athletic recognition day we had one back in december uh this will now be how sort of we approach non-nli signing so if you're not an nli signed uh signing athlete we will do two days of recognition one in december so these are your division two division three athletes who are going on and competing and really um within the ncaa a very high level they don't sign an lli but we want to acknowledge that they're going on and participating in college athletics is continuing their life as a student athlete i guess so that will be may fourth bmcas we finished ela

we have math and science coming up in may in june respectively we have ap exams coming up so they will begin on may 2nd end on the 13th we currently have 540 students excuse me 504 we have uh we are registered for 547 exams um so i don't actually have the student number but that's how many exams we are registered for i want to make sure i say that correctly um a little bit of forward thinking so you know curious about a curriculum evening so we're doing a little forward planning we started discussions around open house fall 2022 because if we don't have it in place by june of 2022 it's very hard to do something different so we are starting discussions about that so the department chairs and myself had a discussion around that

dr mcmanus will join us on on wednesday a week from today to continue that discussion and i have some um preliminary dates next week if teachers are interested to come and have lunch with me share their lunch with me and talk about perhaps what we could do differently for open house next year the assumption it will be in person but having it not in person for the last few years what what do we want it to look like and here's an opportunity to um shift if we want to shift right once you're away from something for so long it's a lot easier to shift and so now perhaps takes advantage of a little of that so there's been some interesting ideas tossing around um regarding that night the other thing we're forward planning um is

the eighth grade mascot high school night so marketing masco so i understand from the data that i've collected that this happened at one time um it didn't happen this year i don't know when it stopped happening but the idea would be to pick a november date and do what i'm calling marketing masco where we would have a student panel that would speak about their experiences here at masco we would highlight our academic program in that evening students would go off and tour the high school uh some of the medium communication students i had a great meeting with them um regarding another issue but it came up that what for one student like seeing the wood shop was kind of the difference for them and so i think that having a night in november prior to

the private school season um could benefit our school and so the plan will be to highlight all aspects of our school academics arts um athletics clubs etc and come up with sort of an evening event for uh eighth grade students and parents so those are the things that are sort of forward planning that would kind of be the big bigger community um events i love that last one that you just talked about we've been i don't know when it was done but we've been talking about doing that since i've long time now come on to this committee i don't think it's been i don't know if it was happened before that ever but i think it happened one version of it i'm not sure if it's the version that i'm envisioning but i do think

there was a version of it it was oddly today in the hallway i ran into um gavin mcgonagall and he was like hey mary jo what do you think of this i'm like oh it's already on the radar we're good um i i think we need to do it because i think there are aspects and elements of this program that people are not aware of that are avenues for students and so i think it's really important that we highlight that and uh and get and let the community see what's actually going on in the high school and what opportunities are here for all students so excellent i like it so that's some of the forward planning thank you i just want to say i i we've said this other people said this means but i

want to say the mascot memo is great as a parent it's so helpful so thank you i just wanted to thank you it's a it's a great way to sort of try to highlight what we're doing but i also feel you know when people reach out i say to them like you can email me and ask me anything it's i try to be as transparent as i can in the memo of what's coming uh so nobody's surprised uh when i can be um and and i i just find it a good way for me to sort of ground myself and keep track of all the great things that are going on and making sure people are getting the right message so i appreciate the feedback though thank you i think it's also been nice on

that memo when you put the morning update on the chieftain chronicle because in the past like i used to look at those sometimes but i'd have to go find them so now it's coming in my mailbox every week it's great a quick question yeah for the final exams i know we talked at the midterms about lowering the percentage of how much it would impact the grade is that still true for yeah it's ten percent no more than ten percent uh the other thing that will go out on ms murphy's getting people who are watching at home are getting a heads up but um you know personally i feel like the semester exam should be determined by the teacher meaning the semester exam does not have to be a paper and pencil exam it can be

a final project it can be a final experience it could be a lab that the class meets during that exam period but it doesn't mean it has to be an assessment that is graded in that moment um i was in the ap literature class that um miss hildebrand was talking about or actually she was talking about the global class but i was in the ap literature class um on friday they did sort of a character walk and i was invited and the students were reading these very creative writings that they had done um sort of the i don't know the prompt exactly but it was kind of like would you learn at masco that wasn't in the curriculum and uh they were reciting them and they were fabulous i got the sense that many of

them were already graded but this was sort of the culminating experience of them sharing them with their peers if they felt comfortable so that could be that semester exam so you know my hope moving forward is that our semester exams evolve into that teachers have the license to do what they want in that exam period but that they do evolve into experiential moments for students that you have more time with students um and perhaps you know that what you're thinking of a semester exam it may not be in that box anymore right yeah i'm looking at it's not up there but the last slide oh sure i can move it pictures um and it's a nice collection of images is the that concert is that the st patrick's day concert so yes so that was

the senior citizens uh yeah so the st patrick's day concert for our seniors uh in the tri-town and that was such a fun concert to have back and they really enjoyed it and i think our student council students who played hosts and hostess of that event enjoyed interacting with them the sense of how many attendees about 50. yeah yeah okay good yeah kind of like almost back to normal and i think too you know i think you you probably still may have some um seniors who are still a little nervous to come out into venues like that but there was a great crowd and they were fairly well spaced out if they wanted to be and it was nice for our students uh to have an opportunity to perform and uh there is a concert

tomorrow night just for a little plug uh and the coral considers next week so hopefully we can get people out um thank you great thank you yeah thanks so much don't you yeah don't disappear so oh are we doing well so can we take a pause for a minute um we had previously tabled um the vote to a point peter called me and i'm wondering if mr delaney has arrived looks there's a man who came in anyone in the audience peter [Laughter] okay apologies we didn't realize that you earlier when we were trying to do this um we thought you hadn't arrived yet so we we tabled it to bring it it's only seven o'clock yeah yes yes and uh maybe i wasn't loud enough when we were on that item i tabled it because

i couldn't i didn't know when i was on it i couldn't hear you you have to speak out from there you got to hear all this time you're here so welcome we uh i know that this is up to the boxford representatives to do the appointment for your um thank you by the way for stepping up and being willing to serve for the essex um so i guess this is an opportunity for you to share anything you might want to share about what you're thinking um i've been on many committees in my life uh in the town of blocksford so i i was asked by frank deluna to uh to step up if i wouldn't mind worked with me on other committees in town and i said it sounds interesting i'll give it a shot

i've never been on a school committee i have done a lot of regulatory committee work planning board conservation commission i'm the building spectrum of oxford so i have you know a lot of committee experience so been chairs of many committees too so um and our boxford reps do you have any questions darling i'm one of them hi i'm kevin i'm patty bernhardt joel mcclain hi john i haven't seen your name in the in the building department yet and harry hi hi how are you carolyn miller thank you how are you good thank you nice to meet you me too thank you for coming yeah thanks for doing that thanks for stepping up so can i make a motion yeah um i moved to appoint peter delaney as the boxford representative to the essex north shore

agricultural technicals number right so if you are a boxer representative and you are in favor say i i i first abstentions all right so the box word [Laughter] [Applause] they don't no that's okay if they don't tell you there is um look up mass association of school committees and there is um a training since you haven't been on one before coming up at the tech in may hey i think i can forward the link along make this i think it's the for someone signed up i have uh i think okay i i the the superintendent's asked me to be there may 5th so i'm sure i'll learn all those yeah all right all right thanks good luck okay are we doing this um no okay we're gonna pass on that tonight we're not ready yes

okay so we're moving on to policy revisions we have some i'll just let melissa take the lead i'm introducing this okay so as policy chair we have looked at but not deliberated the exchanges the first one um is the graduation requirement policy ikf and i'm actually going excuse me to turn that over to dr harvey to discuss that or present it to us so this is uh the change to the the policy um that would uh implement with the class of 2026 a requirement of one course in visual or performing arts uh that's five credits so that's one course one year one one year right yeah two or two half year courses two semesters or one full year so it's five credits how many if you take no study halls during your four years how

many credits do you end up with let's see seven classes five credits a year would be 35 times four so 140 which is well over what you would need one of the uh arguments i heard about this is to help reduce the reliance on study halls why not raise the total credits that are needed and let students choose what they want to fill that time with so the reason i proposed the arts requirement actually had it's great that will move some kids out of study hall but it's actually to better align us with mass core which is the workforce development criterion that high schools in massachusetts should they've basically defined what they view as a core curriculum for the high schools in massachusetts which we don't meet because we don't have a one-year arts requirement

and if i presented i think quite a few meetings ago but we're down in the 60 percentile on that um where our schools that we would like to compare ourselves to are well above 90 percent meaning 90 of their students complete the mass core graduation requirement we're at 60 and the bulk of that percentage is due to the fact that we don't have students taking art i also talked about um that in our senior class for example they were like about i'm gonna misquote the numbers so please don't hold me to them but there were about 170 students um who did not meet the one-year art requirement and of them half of them had or about half of them had taken at least one semester of an art class so if we had just gotten

them another half a semester over three years we that our numbers would have jumped to like seven i think i said it was like 70 and please don't quote me because i'm trying to pull them out of the synapses that requirement what is the benefit of it well the benefit of that is it's one of our data points for how we're ranked as a school and it you know along with mcas and other rankings that they use and i just and that will help our school ranking which helps the towns that are represented in our school is it i have a question is it possible to broaden the arts definition so communication and media arts and all of that is that so we've had conversations so we've had conversations around right now so it's it's

both visual arts and performing arts i do think we can do our due diligence and go back through our course offerings something like you know uh graphic design is within the arts department any anyway computer design yeah complementing the business graphics would work with some kids i think a wood shop is already an arts class here yeah that would already architecture's already an arts class um it was pretty cool i think it is again this would our we haven't yet this would be for the kids starting in september so we can definitely review our course requirement and look at sort of what this part of this too is ensuring that whatever we call an arts class aligns with the frameworks for art that the state designates as art so i think it's important that we

we can uh stretch or widen that but i think it's important to make sure we're not saying like well this class we have to use some rubric or some structure in order to do that and i think we can start with the frameworks for uh both visual and performing arts and in fine arts and see for example um ap art history right could be an arts requirement does it include abandon yes public speaking drama all those would count just thinking some of the business electives probably could both so again we can we can go through our program of studies and see if there are other classes that meet that criterion um and we are we are talking about certain classes that could be a dual credit so for example the student would take the class

maybe not as their english say they're taking uh media communications if that's becomes an arts class and english 10 right or english 11 then as long as it they could use that as their art requirement because they have another english class but you couldn't sort of use it for both yeah that makes sense that would be the issue and the requirement would start with incoming freshmen is that how this would class yes our current eighth graders would so they would have four years so none of the students currently in the building there's no change in their graduation requirements and that was very intentional right because we don't want to superimpose even on we even considered perhaps our current ninth graders but we felt like nope because they may have already planned out their trajectory which

students and parents tend to do when they arrive here so this would not impact those students so to your point i think i think we'll see a slight decrease in study halls as a result of students choosing maybe to take their art requirement and get it over with air quotes however they would have four years to to map that out for themselves wouldn't you likely end up in the same place if you're increase the number of credits for the graduation requirement people would have to take more courses and and since so many of them already take half a year of what qualifies as an art class then because i think what will end up happening is a student will come in and say i want to take five and a half credit i want to

take two and a half classes this year two full year classes and a half year elective in english and because i need to meet this graduation requirement i think the other thing is remember your graduation requirement is set at the bar that we want all kids to meet and oftentimes many of our students are beyond that bar because they are taking seven classes they're in they're in band all four years and taking six other classes and so i'm always nervous about increasing the graduation credits um whereas really the goal here is really to get close to the mass core and if we just increase the credits by five credits kids could take two computer science classes which is terrific but that sort of defeats the purpose which the real goal here is to try to

create a curriculum and an academic program at a comprehensive high school that includes the arts in some form performing arts and or visual arts which is part of lots of comprehensive high schools that we like to compare ourselves to yeah it's also part of um mental health work depending on what you do like it is definitely something there for people who might not know but it's a great way to help de-stress some stuff as long as they're in a class that they um aren't you know isn't they're not doing the studio art ap class or whatever i don't know what it is but my question was um how about the kids who perform in the school play that aren't necessarily in a class is there any way that the play could add credits or no

there really isn't in part because that would be very similar to like an athlete getting pe credit which we can no longer do well we can't do that because the the they have to pay to play a sport and you can't give credits for something that they pay for but they pay to be in drama oh you do pay for the play oh or musicals oh okay so i think it's yeah the same you're free i was just gonna say i am sympathetic to the kids that do want to keep some sort of study as another like mental health tool but i'm really hoping that if we can work win into the schedule that that will balance out this so that both things are achieved i think that would be the ideal uh so i

just want to add that we haven't forgotten about that element nope it's been an integral part of all scheduled discussions to this juncture met twice great meetings friday excellent thank you terry yeah i just want to say you you mentioned that this was connected to the state workforce development initiative and that actually made me think of the former student who spoke earlier saying you know there's this focus on everyone has to go to a four-year college and stuff i think to me this actually is a step in the in in a positive direction in terms of saying not everyone you know wants to meet you know is going to go to a four-year school and the practical skills that you learn in the kinds of classes that you just talked about i think would benefit

anyone in any profession um and i noticed that in the internships too i mean internships are not only in you know offices they're in all different kinds of um organization places so i just wanted to make flag that just for posterity a minute if you build it you have to build a program right we talked about that when we talked in budget deliberations about adding a drama position and as you build programs like this and as you create opportunity for students to take these other classes there's opportunities to create the electives that you're talking about which the student might actually want which could be you know sculpture or 3d i mean we have sculpture but 3d painting 3d art wood shop could have another class that's beyond the introductory woodworking or woodworking one so the

idea is that you might create a pipeline for other forms of art either in visual art you know we haven't talked about um you know students making music right and creating a course where they're actually creating and producing songs and records and record recording and film making also an art class that we don't offer i mean there's just there's a wealth of opportunity here the if we can and you will build that as you get kids who are like i really liked intro to filmmaking i wanted can we do filmmaking as a class um and so that would be that's part of when you start doing going down this avenue you actually create potential for more electives that's what happened in most of our academic programs these electives are born out of interest and once

you have that requirement you're getting kids you're like i have to take it anyway i'd rather be in filmmaking why can't we have a filmmaking course and that's sort of how you get the ball wrong will the kids be surveyed in any way to get i mean you need so i think for this year we're just going to try to run the compliment that we have um but i think it's worth sort of it would likely go to next year's juniors and seniors like what are some art classes that you wished you had the opportunity to take or may have may have uh encouraged you to take in our class that we didn't offer again some of that is based on staffing that we have in the building and their skill set to do these

things but most of our kids can make films and i could just be the facilitator of class right uh they have a lot of skill uh you know but there's a i think there's opportunity there write scripts produce films have a film night like when you're talking about the things that you know there are a lot of people who just go right and start doing that and don't go off to college and the breadth of options that would count um i'm hoping that then it would students might automatically just think art means art or music means music and not realize that like a digital media class or wood yep count so i'm hoping that's a good way of communicating that as they're making their choices so the way that it would be communicated any any

course listed in the course of study under visual arts and or performing arts would count as your art requirement and if they're courses that are if there's any of their outside rough times they would likely be dual they would likely be dual listed because again any course that you're going to take as your art requirement you can't it can't be english it can't be both of your you can't double dip it can't be both of your requirements so it would be listed with likely with different or similar course numbers but it would be listed under both places so for example i'm thinking of a previous school where engineering could be math or science it was listed under both places and you selected how you wanted to take it all the kids whether you were taking

it for math or science you were all together but some of you were in there completing a math requirement and some of you are in there completing a science requirement or it for some kids it didn't matter but you could choose and so i would envision if we find classes in either business and or english or elsewhere history or elsewhere uh that they would be labeled you know appropriately and you would choose in which department you're going to take the course and get the credit yeah any other questions from our members is this the first read is that what this is considered right so it's it's a it's an amendment and we're amending an already existing policy so it requires two votes at subsequent meetings so oh okay vote on it tonight unanimous vote by

the entire committee at any meeting or two consecutive too successive correct word so i know in the past we do some we have sometimes done a first read thank you thank you um and then come back for the vote but according to our policy we can vote tonight if we want to well we have to we have to i'll make a motion to accept the new um arts requirement into the course i'll second it so we have a motion from tasha ii from melissa session further all right all in favor any opposed one opposed you need names costa costa any abstentions i don't think so we don't have a reason to abstain so we will vote we will bring this back to our um agenda next meeting for a second vote thank you so the

following um i know you have i'll let you introduce it again we have policies that we looked at but did not deliberate for the subcommittee they're jb j-i-c-f-b jlcc ald um it's my understanding that they were the amendments are requested as a result of the civil rights audit so i'm going to ask daddy butler um every three years the desc conducts a tiered focus monitoring review of special education and civil rights standards so currently the student services office is working on the self-assessment portion of the review as part of the review we needed to update several of our policies related to anti-bullying people access counseling and medication administration so as i was reviewing the policies that i needed to upload i realized that the four policies that we're looking at tonight were due to be

reviewed and updated um including equal educational access anti-bullying administration of prescription medications and guidance services so i notified mike he agreed that we could have our special education attorney's office update these policies and as you look at the red line policies tonight you'll see that they have been updated according to not only dea dese mandates but also mass general laws and just a note that our guidance services policy has been renamed to school counseling services and that's the desc term analogy for that and has been for a while some changed it and the policy subcommittee has not looked at this section with mask yet as part of the policy review we anticipate that it may come up in the next few months but we this is just to make the amendments that were needed to

update um for the reasons paddy stated would you need to i mean if we do this stuff here does it need to go through masks well they'll compare it to their forms still they might have other changes right there may be other changes again these went through council so right so these are like kind of the what needs that yeah this is from our our council this isn't necessarily an opinion so what i would propose is that we take care of the legally needed changes tonight that you we still conduct our review as a school committee for any other if there's any other i would agree reviews process which we will um so do we so is this a first read or can we like make motions to accept these we can make a motion

same thing you're going to make a motion to accept and if it's not unanimous then we have to bring it back for a second after we do them all at once yeah would we be making a motion for jet was that would that make it so you can't make changes in the future if we accept this for now it's just the legal changes you can always come bring these back if there's some changes that need i'll make a motion to accept the red line into the policy for policy j b j i c f b j l c d and jld as proposed and i'll second it motion from tasha second from melissa for all four of the j policies on our agenda tonight um any further discussion or deliberation well i just would like

to make the point that i think it's um the i think it's the anti-bullying one that again the student who spoke earlier you know talked about feeling like a target that people could be targeted for harassment based on their economic status or their um race and i think this addresses that in a nice way i mean it's legal we have to do it it's the law but i think i just wanted to make that point as well i'm sorry i'm just trying to figure out oh it's um j-i-c-f-b the anti-bullying and it's the new paragraph um e on page three so thanks can i just also say that there were several other policies that were part of this review that were didn't need to be updated okay excellent you're good on the other okay i

would just add i would love for the anti-bullying policy to just be looked at a little bit more closely i had a chance to look through and did email you with some ideas of how to refine the language just to reflect and be clear on what the definition is because i felt like it was missing something so if that can be brought up at another meeting great yeah maybe with mask yeah when we do our mask review that would be our opportunity to discuss this at the subcommittee meeting okay and then from there to here nothing nothing goes uh nothing without passing through we have input on what's in there too yes being recommended exactly if you meet with mask and yeah then we bring it to the school committee is that good patty yes

yes all right so we had a motion a second no further discussion so i'll take our vote all right i have a question if we approve all of them at the same time and it's unanimous we don't go for a second read on any of them um or if we say no on one of them then we re we come back for a second read on all of them we could probably pull one out if if there was a problem on one you could pull that out did you want to pull one well i i'd like to uh do the anti-bullying i'd like to spend more time on that and then the prescription medications so i didn't want to approve go with all of them i didn't want to not be able to go back

to so i guess we're going back to the one for costa is that correct yeah so that one's between going back for graduation i will pull on those two yeah if i we don't vote so maybe we do them individually yeah why don't we do them individually for tonight so that maybe we can get a couple off of our next so my motion goes away wait wait i think we have to amend it we have to say no you have to withdraw your i've withdrawn my emotions right tasha's motion has been withdrawn we're not voting that way so let's take them one at a time do i have a motion for policy jb yes full educational access yes so moved by tasha second second from terry discussion all in favor opposed jb passed unanimously would

you like anybody to move thank you um i'll move the guy the guidance services jld um to approve a second i thought policy jld guidance services any discussion all um look at policy jlcp do we have a motion for that one it's administration of prescription medications i'd like to hear what joe has to say about that let's start with a motion in a second okay i'll make a motion to approve it tasha moves i'll second it so that melissa okay melissa seconds discussion so joe can you share with us what your thoughts what your concerns were i just wanted to spend a little more time and dig through it a little deeper okay so i don't have a lot of concerns with it i just wanted to not just rush right into it okay any

other comments on that i would just say let's make sure that if we do do anything we have like we legally have to make the changes that are there um so if there are further changes we should have them in writing that's the thing the changes that are here came from council and the policy itself is based on regulations from the department of public health yeah so so it has to be this way and it could be approved like this but then the policy subcommittee not making any changes to the changes that were made could you make other changes in it as long as they're in line with state regulation and that's the that's the thing here is that you know there's not a lot of latitude to change things um as they're laid out

so if mask had an option had to add an opinion on it still have to put it through this one for example i've looked at it masks is a very short policy that says we're going to follow the commonwealth of mass regulation 105 to 210.00 from the department of public health that's all there is to yeah there's there's just that's the state's got a got a regulation from the from public health and work well so that's interesting we're talking about the prescription medicine right now so does that take away the local school committee's ability to set their own policies you can set your own policy but it still has to be in line with state law so so if like if someone had a recommendation to add add to it it doesn't necessarily mean it

doesn't come up as long as it's in line with state law and i would say anything that was proposed like that i would want to go through councilwoman before we yeah before you you know that's fair but we should hear what those if there are recommendations but we could do that like are you saying we could well the potential we could do that later like we could with the anti-bullying is get the stuff in there that's required by this part of this is patty has to upload the amended policy so that it's correct so that desi will review it and say you guys are okay on that one and not give us a nap not give us a an action item on a correct corrective action plan later that says your policy isn't in line

with is there a fine associated fine it's just all right oh that's true one more one more to do no enough more work for you guys right all right so um for joe's con consideration just to think about if there's something that you wear once you've looked at it more closely and you're thinking of adding for the next meeting to just know the better as far as communicating that in writing so that we can i'll send you what i'm thinking about also just to make it clear that what proof with this now does not mean that we cannot add just like with the bullying when we review it as a full committee as part of our routine process the only reason this is here now is because of the legal yeah i just think that

there are things there's been a lot of questions around naltrexone uh there's missing things about um personnel uh it says emergency use of injectables but they don't talk about insulins things of that sort so talked about insulin i thought did i miss it because it said that kids would that are required um with insulin could help the menstrual diabetes may possess it's in the because i think we have similar thoughts on the different bullying the bullying policy and this yeah can we just ask that it be put on the agenda next school committee meeting so we can talk about those specifically and more in depth like if we have ideas for if you had ideas though they would have we'd have to have them ready to approve by this group but i wanted to put

those through council first through the subcommittee that's why i'd say we're going through the subcommittee and then coming back in you know months but we do post we are meeting dorothy presser in the month of april to continue we just don't have a date because i haven't posted anything so i can ask her to start the process to review these sections i don't think that the medication one is going to have like like i said it's very short i actually did look at them like mike said i mean so i don't know if we wanna i don't know can't we can can we can it be like a both and like can we vote on these and put these on the agenda for the follow-up review yeah i guess that's what i'm asking yeah yeah

they're definitely going to be part of the but i think they're saying sooner before like push it ahead sooner or later like right that's i'm actually trying to in my head as you're saying this i'm thinking through our what we have coming up planned for the next couple meetings before we reorganize as a committee so i'm just thinking about what else is on the agenda and whether the timing makes it's not you know just the process and the timing since we have a process that we already planned on following with our policy review and this is coming up very soon um my opinion is that i would like my preference would be that we could get the legal elements of these voted through as soon as possible and then bring them back and i don't

want to promise when they're going to come back but it would be soon what soon means means i don't want to say a specific meeting because i have to full agenda um schedule could be could we do because i think jay sorry i think jay was one of the sections that we were going to look at with dorothy coming up right so we could potentially look at jay first right yeah yeah but you could change it again after these these things have been put through that's what you're saying yeah like it's stuff that was missing that joe and pat or anyone thinks should be in here yeah we could add them at that time but i don't think patty was i don't know if you were on the committee for when we presented to section

a but we tabled stuff in the fall but it's a it's a process where we actually we go through the reasons why certain languages where it is and however if she goes over how it reflects law so i think it's it's really good exercise to understand how the process how the policies are made and why there's foreign policies and um why we have moscow policy so a lot of our policies actually have masco flavor um is what that means yeah because she gets so it's a good it's actually a very good exercise and i talked with her about um presenting them in a different way then we've had it presented um for the prior sections and she's actually going to do that for us so i guess i'm not proposing to change and take away

anything that's legally required but we could certainly with this discussion group enhance language so that it's clearer especially for something as important as a bullying policy you want to be as clear as possible and make sure the language is understood by everyone involved and it includes a definition that has key elements that are part of it that differentiate it from other other aggressive types of behavior so that's really all i'm asking i'm not asking to change the take away what's required but just to put it out there that it would be good to have a discussion as a group about things that could enhance the policy so i would like to see that maybe you guys do ask her to put jay at the front of the line that these can be the first of

that next phase of review um but i think those are good ideas um there's a motion and a second on this thanks for reminding me um so we have a motion in a second on this one and if there's any no further discussion for now i can go ahead and take a vote on this one else jlcd so if if we prove this sorry if we prove this um now then we're covering the requirements and then we can bring it back a little bit further discussion but people only will require a second vote if it's not unanimous right right okay all right all right so all in favor of approving the changes the amendments to jlcd hi uh all right so those changes passed um and we have left uh policy j-i-c-f-b on anti-bullying do

i have emotion yep i moved natasha yep account second second by terry why do we have to do something any discussion tonight on that one all in favor aye aye any opposed that also passed thank you guys and we're flagging those for for more in-depth discussion when our committee used them right well and also if our committee chooses to put more enhancement into either of all of either any other policy after the mask discussion before it becomes approved onto our policy thing especially with these ones it will then need to go to our council even after masks so it is a potentially long process so it's we got this done for legal reasons now and then we can have further discussions both of those sections are heavily ranked heavily based on statute so not that

much mascot variety to it okay all right thank you everyone moving on to item j school choice discussion and vote for participation on on participation for 2022 2023 school year uh we had our public hearing on this earlier so we got a little bit of information on the numbers and i'd love to hear there's a recommendation for us from our administrators i said we'd you're looking at recommending uh uh participating in school choice in grade seven and nine um did you have a certain number in mind and just i think we i feel like we talked about this recently but just to be clear we haven't had any issues um recovering special ed circuit break or any funds that people were concerned about back in the day so we fill out the paperwork just like

we do for special ed circuit breaker and we get reimbursed yeah there's a there's a quarterly claims process for school choice associated costs that we my office and paddy's office work together on okay i know that was a concern when we started because this committee for many many years hadn't done any school choice until i think two years ago may have been the first full choice in a while um so and that was the concern for extra costs associated well given the fact that the ninth grade class is all only already projected to be larger than the other high school classes adding to that i don't think is prudent and i don't think it's prudent to add to the seventh grade class because it may hinder the ability in the future of if the enrollment

numbers turn down again to eliminate a middle school team as was proposed for this current budget so my would move that we do not participate in the school choice program for next year is that a motion or a discussion i think it was an i second we have a motion and a second for no participation in school for next year any further discussion my comment to that would be that um i would agree with you on the grade nine i would not agree with you on the grade seven so i know it would be no i can barely hear you can everybody hear her i'm sorry i'm not tired you can't hear me i'm right next to you okay oh sorry tasha do you want to finish nope did i did everybody hear what i

said yeah absolutely um i just it was probably on the slide but if if people are already in kids who are already in just stay in okay anybody who's ready don't kick anybody anybody who was already admitted is now a masculine student got it okay you just wouldn't admit the slide is attached in your agendas if you're looking for those numbers i'm sorry and that's right and then the numbers of the projected 2022 i believe already account for projected changes of um of like a handful of kids that we typically the the average typical shift from eighth to ninth right yeah usually there's a an increase from grade six to seven so that's reflected here yeah and then there's a decrease of roughly 40 from grade nine to ten sorry eight to nine as kids

transition to those private schools and vocational schools and other schools yeah and it's all reflected here um 11 already existing right so we'll lose one choice student because we have one senior so there's 11 choice students reflected in that 1644 number yeah oh yeah i do have a hand sorry so i do have a question in that at the high school level can you can someone explain to me how the class size affects it it affects the core classes correct like so yeah it depends on that would be the number of sections that credit okay so for to me when i look at this it looks like we have less students um potentially are we're projected to have less students for um of approximately 50 students right or 48 48 right um because i didn't

look at the red number sorry i was doing the math in my head almost all of them are in the middle school um the middle school goes from 321 to 287 that's of the 48. 287 i'm not saying grade 7 great seven difference between now i'm in grade seven and the current thirty four students the third the difference is thirty four different at the middle school level and fourteen different that that okay so but if for like faculty reasons if they just if one class is smaller than the other for the core classes the teachers get like there's not by adding 10 students like say in ninth grade i guess how would it affect our faculty and ours that teach do we you can't really know until it all depends yeah it would depend on

how many sections that are allocated you know so you say there are ten sections of ninth grade english and you're going to add 10 students you know your average is you know quite likely to go up one student per but depending on i'd probably i'd say it a little differently so over the last three years we've lost over 120 students but only reduced our faculty size by two right so i don't think it would have that much of a an effect at all as compared to two years ago right class sizes are going to be smaller either way you shake it right so i am a proponent of school choice i think it's a good program there's value in it from students from the teachers from the community so my i would be voting against

costa's um motion motion um and i do believe that we should add it to seventh and ninth grade so i think we have opportunity at moscow to teach um i found uh costa's proposal for grade seven not doing it for grade seven compelling because i think you know we just finished a budget process and we continue to get pressure from our towns to keep costs under control and we do not want to affect student learning um so i i i hesitate to add to the middle school level because i i think that if the numbers drop more than they look like they're going to drop but if they drop a little bit more there is a opportunity to readjust the number of staff we have at the middle school and still have good student to

teacher ratios and meet town requests to keep costs under control i wouldn't do that now and i would found your reasons for not doing that in the budget um very reasonable but i don't i think adding adding kids from other towns to the middle school isn't a wise decision at this time um i'm fine with doing it in grade nine can um i comment to carol and scott of course we talk to each other after each other um i think that in the i feel like in the budget when the question um came up about what about the um possibility of removing a team for this year that when they looked at the numbers coming up from six i feel like the numbers had increased over from k to six from last year thinking that

that wouldn't actually lead to a reduction in the middle school team like the whole plan kind of being changed not that we are pushing it off a year and i i remember that um and that some of that is a little bit more of an art than a science so that that's what i have in the back of my mind that's why i don't disagree with the decision that was made but i'd rather just see the numbers fall where they fall without adding actually and the previous year the k through six numbers indicated dropping a team so let's not preclude the cutting by adding out of town students let's wait and see if there's another year of k-6 enrollment at this current level or you can also look at it that you're adding kids and

therefore finances to keep the team working as they do which a a team of three uh you know seems to be a better model than a team of those that's not i i don't know i don't think we heard that in the past i think we heard two and a half teams could be just as effective yeah it sounded a little iffy to me at that point if we decide it's this year to year it's an annual decision yeah it's an annual decision but the kids stay i have to let statement by june 1st but the kids that you admit stay yeah yeah but i'm saying in terms of what we decide on tonight it's for a year so it sounds like you're proposing to just for the ninth grade and not for the seventh

that's how i feel that's not what the emotion is on oh okay i was just trying to say yeah the um it seems to me that the this is a good idea to add these or have the potential of district the kids come here if you think that our numbers or are going to go back up and we're going to want to keep the faculty that we that we have here now and use this as a mechanism to kind of smooth out the the bumps in it so that you're you're you're not cutting step and then going back out later and trying to replace them that's that's that's not easy um and i i'm trying to remember i think at some point we had a discussion about whether that looking several years down the road

whether the the trend that we've been experienced about decreasing enrollment was actually going to stop and turn around um but honestly i i'm not positive that that was what the you know what the data what the data showed so that real quick i have it in front of me yep so right now grade 6 276 grade 5 278 grade 4 268 grade 3 275 grade 2 283 grade 1 282 kindergarten 275 in the tri-town to me that does not indicate a decline those look relatively steady but if you looked at the year before that was the basis of the recommendations my point is one year's difference doesn't indicate a trend so let's not hams tie the hands of the next committee by admitting students into the middle school for next year so just really need

to remember the year that you're describing was the year that many kindergarten and first grade students unenrolled because of the pandemic that is the year we should not ever be using as a as a trend measure just the fin thank you for that that information i would join costa in this and not admit any at this point just because um there's just too many unknowns about you know going forward so i'd rather uh you know mindful of our of our uh commitment and desire to to be fiscally responsible to our our taxpayers um i wouldn't add uh any uh this time so is there any other thing is there any other quick question we talked a lot last year i believe about how much each student would add to bring money in so what i'm

hearing is we don't want to bring them in because it would add it would cost tax dollars isn't that backwards from what okay that way i understand it backwards yes yeah where if you bring in students in the seventh grade they come with about five thousand dollars each but if the presence of those thirteen students or sixty five thousand dollars prevents you the committee from next year cutting a team at the middle school you've gotten sixty five thousand this year sixty five thousand the next year but you're who would have been that's 130 000 but you would have been saving 350 or more so the net cost you know there's on that cost because though if if those students are the reason you don't cut a team and so let's see we can revisit this

you know next year and if the trends continue in the 6 then that becomes you know a different issue but one year doesn't make a trend i think the analogy that was used is that we have a plane with seats so we have to fly the plane no matter what so if we can open up seats and get some revenues our taxpayers are still paying for the plane we may be able to be able to offset our costs with choice students we haven't had success in getting choice students so really like sometimes i think this argument's a little bit moot but it's still you know it's a way to do that for the current year and maybe we just do it for ninth grade because the unknowns of them the middle school is unknown um

so the good news is that i only budgeted 12 students not knowing where this conversation would so you know at the very least it's there's a variance the budget of five grand we did nothing so no harm both students for total including the ones we have just because i just haven't you just kept the current number yeah but there would only really only be 11. if you if we did nothing right thank you jeff and do you think that a difference of 10 students is enough to change your middle school um team structure i don't it's not you can answer that but i don't think that was costa's point i i think it's 10 plus perhaps a reduction in the number of kids that come to masco 10 kids is not a it's not a

team we're not advocating cutting teams no we're not so we we need to have the right number of teams for the students that we have okay is there any other discussions so the motion on the table is to not take any um choice choice students next year uh so and we can't like vote on another one until we vote on we have to vote we have to vote on this before a new motion can be made and a yes motion means no place coming in as choice students okay so i have a question oh this is kind of like high risk because all right okay you could offer an amendment well i would like to amend it but do we have to if i were to amend it i would make a motion to not

have any school choice for seventh grade but to have what did you say for ninth can't that be just another motion up to ten up to ten and perhaps costa could consider withdrawing his motion i think we're making this more complicated all right so let's let's do that the way you vote in one doesn't also preclude you from voting in the next one if it passes it passes absolutely and this can't present right right i don't hear any motion to amend it i will withdraw my emotion emotion i figured that you know you know if it fails i just bring back you know my mother right okay that's the better order thank you yeah that is the better i appreciate that all right so i make that motion to not have school choice for seven

and two have um school choice for a nine only it's the motion should be to only have school choice for nine to only have school choices up to ten students i'll get that one motion and second is to have up to ten school choice students admitted or offered spots offered for grade 9 only i have a discussion really a question so so we're less concerned about with with the kids in the high school that that that 10 would have on class size and all that so there's fewer negatives and more positives so i see slight head now especially in the height of grade 10 numbers projected numbers okay yeah okay the other you can make the i'm going to call the vote all in favor aye aye aye aye aye any opposed no two opposed

carries eight to two carries eight to two that's the cow all right is there any other emotions i appreciate i didn't know if anyone was gonna propose grade seven i withdraw my desire to do that because i will allow it to stay in its pure masco tri-town size for another year okay it was just the motion in my head that was a drawing but i want you all to know that we still have your update then dr harvey so we're moving on to superintendent's update all right so uh first off uh we had a successful senior citizens concert last week uh and i want to thank our faculty members ben hanchett uh brian ocock and uh randy o'keefe uh as well as school committee members bill hodges and joe jampa anybody else on this phil

school committee i think that was that was it so thank you all for your efforts in support of the st patrick's senior citizen day concert which was held last tuesday the 29th we had approximately 50 senior citizens from boxford middleton and top field and they were treated to great performances by our instrumental and coral groups the afternoon also included a raffle for gift baskets that were prepared by our student council representatives i want to thank again thanks to all our faculty and students who had a part in putting on this great show and then this past monday uh the faculty participated in uh staff development training by dr tom dusky uh who's a nationally recognized expert on the topic of student grading and assessment uh dr gustry's remarks on monday centered on how we could

change our practices around grade reporting in order to better document and communicate a student's progress towards mastering our curriculum first step in this process is to develop a shared purpose statement as to why we grade students the statement is then used to guide decisions around how student progress is reported in his remarks dr gussy also explored many common practices and grading such as the use of percentage grades the use of plus and minus grades and using a single grade that combines academic achievement and study habits and he explained the drawbacks that were associated with each of these practices ultimately dr gusky advocates for a grade reporting system that separately reports a student's progress on meeting academic standards and their progress on essential work readiness skills after the presentation to the entire faculty dr gusky spent

an hour with our department heads uh discussing ideas about how to implement these types of grading systems the presentation was a lot for all of us to consider and we'll be continuing the discussion of dr ideas beginning with the middle and high school faculty meetings next week so there's a lot to think about great great morning yeah new way of thinking yeah thank you i don't see anyone jump and ask questions oh here we go i have a question i missed something why do we have a uh um tent outside did i miss that still in the middle of a pandemic are we having classes or lunch out there everything yeah i mean lunch everything it's there for anybody to use it okay fool me once well no like i feel like i was like

oh we undid everything but i'm like did i miss did i miss this pence back up the picnic tables are moved back under the tent there's kids can go outside for lunch right now and nobody wants to go out because okay it's just cold and wet but some teachers have been out there with their classes i think that's great no i think it's great but i was like did i miss a pandemic thing it was an uptick all right thank you next on our agenda we had um if you remember we kind of started this academic year with a handful of open meeting law complaints or from courier carlson murray and crispo and the responses are all attached we was kind of waiting to have them all be closed out before reporting back to everyone

so that we're all aware that in all four cases there were no violations of open meeting law found um and i also just want to i had mentioned this early on when i first came through but as a committee we have established um a guide with um our administrative assistant for all the chairs of our subcommittees we established that last summer a guide of sort of the proper process for um posting anything relative to having meetings so that there was more clarity as batons get passed from one chair to the next and we have offered numerous opportunities for open meeting law trainings and of course all of our members are expected to participate in the charting the course class workshop from math association of school committees so that everyone understands what the what the appropriate

procedures are if as a public body so that we can avoid further confusion and then another just reminder that anyone from the our constituents are always welcome to reach out to any of us if there's questions about specific data point that you're having trouble finding often we can help direct uh direct you to it we are open to listening and hearing and helping can i just ask um the body that makes these it's the attorney general's office that reviews these things okay yeah if i think rich if it gets um so we're moving on any other questions on that before okay subcommittee reports uh community relations i think a lot of these are just announcing probably yeah we haven't met since last name we're meeting next week um patty has agreed to take on the

tree uh effort so thank you patty yeah thank you so that's it yeah and you did i'll circulate at an agenda and everything next wednesday next wednesday we're already there okay i got all the committees mixed up and job asked me when the meeting was and i was like i don't know ask melissa that's not my committee i think oh okay there it is yes yeah just to make it easier for everybody out thank you okay um we don't have a budget update no subcommittee uh anti-racism yes we met uh monday evening over at the central office um and one of the things that we had discussed at our last meeting was reaching out to various stakeholder organizations across the three towns to see if there was any interest in and in working together on

promoting diversity equity and inclusion across the three towns because we knowing that that any progress here is going to require a marathon and not a sprint that it would be likely be more successful if it wasn't simply driven by the school committee but driven by um various groups representing the three towns uh so in that light i've i've i started reaching out to different groups including the the tri-town council but also a number of communities of faith across the three towns and it's still early days but i'm actually i think encouraged by the reaction that i received so far um and and anxious and uh to participate in this and it's all completely really undefined at this point i'm not not really sure what it what it's going to look like but i'm going to

continue to reach out uh to to various groups in the three towns uh to gauge interest um and to and with the with the subcommittee uh determine what the appropriate you know next step uh would be my my guess at some point um if we uh uh if i if um we really have a critical mass of of organizations and individuals that are interested in participating in this uh then we might you know host some sort of uh meeting to further discuss what the right approach might be so uh stay tuned on that we haven't established a time for our next meeting but my guess it'll be [Music] in approximately a month all right thank you let us know policy i don't think we have an update no we're just working on scheduling a meeting

with mask and uh yeah do anything um i mean just we are moving forward on discussions with the professional administrators union this past monday and our next meeting is at the beginning of may any liaison updates festa last wednesday was the open meeting law training that um middleton's town council did uh i have this slide deck for that and be happy to forward it to anyone that's interested that deck also includes public records law and conflict of interest and there are two new things that didn't even make it onto the deck that jay tellerman you know talked about one is that they're you know the ag is now actively encouraging if not requiring committees to provide new members with a five-year history of open meeting law complaints against that the other thing is that you
