do it. Sorry. While you do that, uh, the Situate School Committee is committed to providing an environment of respect during meetings. We value the participation of our community and want all participants, including marginalized and minoritized communities, to feel welcomed and respected. We ask our committee members and all who participate to commit to these standards to support and respect our community. All right. Call the February 9th, 2026 school committee meeting to order here at 6:05. And we will start with our public comment segment. >> Oh, hi. >> Hi. >> Hello. >> I forgot here. Um, >> sorry. If you want, you can sit come up to the microphone and sit. It comes through clear to our home viewers. Hi. >> Hello.
Take care. I'll do the mic. >> Oh, thanks. >> Let's make sure make sure it's on for >> Hi guys. >> Hi. So, my name is Richard Aaron and I just came because there's I hadn't been to any other situype school or town meetings, but they say there's nothing like getting more involved than when it suits your own self-interest. So, seriously, um, I've been a substitute teacher since I retired four years ago. I see a couple kids there. It's been the best four years in terms of work of my life. U, the kids, the teachers, just there's not enough I can say about what it's like to be with the kids, especially in the high school. That's where I spend most of my time. Uh but a few weeks ago, maybe a month ago, or
maybe more, Melanie, I don't remember, but I told Melanie, um I was at the kindergarten. I was the Havalue kindergarten, I think it was, and I had a little girl come up to me and she said, "What's your name?" And I said, "Mr. Aaron." And she said, "Mr. Aaron, you remind me of my grandfather." And I looked at her and I took a breath and I said, "Is that because he's a really nice guy?" And she said, "Well, he is, but he's really old." That's the truth. So, I looked at her and I thought to myself and I thought, you know, I don't get paid enough for this. And I went back mostly to the high school. Uh but but seriously, the reason that I stopped by was simply that I think Melanie could tell
you I would do this even though I didn't get paid because the high school kids, they're just I I don't know if it's like that in all towns. I um raised my family in Wayouth, but that was quite a while ago. uh I don't know even when I went to school meetings and things in way or or parent teacher conferences I don't remember this kind of feeling I just don't so what I'm here to say is it's my fourth year and while it was a joke that I was thinking I don't get paid enough for this in the four years that I've been here we're not earning as substitutes just like teachers don't get paid enough but as sub we're not getting getting paid a dime more than it was four years ago I have
no idea with that. So, I'm only here to say that I love it. I would do it anyway, but it would surely be helpful to get up in the morning um and shovel myself out and get here to get a little bit more money. It would be appreciated. That's it. That's all I need to say. And uh I'm sorry the Giants weren't in the game. They might have done better this year, but congratulations for a great Patri season for you guys. That's it. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Sure. I can address it. It's actually something that's been on my mind and actually >> you want to if you can hear Nobody can ever hear well from back there. Just the setup of the room. So if >> Oh. >> Yeah. If you want to
come sit or >> Sure. No, understood. It's actually something that's been on my mind when >> when we were at the select board meeting last Tuesday. It also came up at the select board meeting that it's something that that we need to consider. >> I you know I look at the whole district and last year we made a very conscious decision to correct the salaries of our par professionals who were legitimately underpaid and so we had to make that decision. We had to make a decision to correct the salary of our substitute nurses and I think our daily subs are next on the list. can't guarantee next year, but it's certainly top of mind that it's something that we have to do. >> Well, as long as I don't pass away watching the Giants win
another four games last year, I'll look forward on your but if you can do it next year, that would be great. >> Thank you. >> Appreciate it. >> I know that we did increase. Was it four years ago that we increase it? >> Probably was. >> I know that we did increase it. I forget if it wasn't >> five years ago. Is that what it was? >> It's at 110 a day now. But it bears overview. So I'm actually looking into the cost by different thresholds and when I have some more research done. >> Great. Yeah, I think we'd be good to see it. Yeah, is a long time. So >> thank you guys. Have a great night. >> Thank you. >> All right. Yeah. Anyone um else for public comment tonight, even remotely. >>
All right, we'll have our student report now. >> Oh, we were just also commenting on the substitute because Mr. Aaron's great and we think that um I feel like in my mind right getting a substitute teacher, it's often times just like a free block. But I think with Mr. Aaron and some of the other stuff. I can't remember his name, but he's um younger. He just started right out of college. Um and he has a math degree. He has my mom's pottery classes when I say this, but um he's great and like been super involved with the students as well. Like Mr. Aaron's like good about checking in. Um but I can't believe I'm blanking on his name, but he like helps in my like AP Calp class and stuff. And um it's just like
having a real teacher there. So, I don't know if that helps anything, but I just wanted to honor them um as teachers as well, but >> Oh, I was just going to add that like I always love like seeing Mr. Aaron in the halls like my friends and I we always say hi to him, talk to them about sports. So, >> yeah, definitely a lot of the subs, they have a huge impact um on the school. Just wanted to speak to that. >> Thank you. That's good to that's really great to hear. >> Yeah. Um, and then getting into the report, um, this past weekend there was the, um, rendition of Mean Girls, the play that went on. Um, I wasn't able to attend, but I've heard great things about it. I've heard it was
a lot of fun to watch. Um, and that was put on by, um, a few of the students here at high school from all the grades. So, that was exciting. >> Yeah. Um, the American Legion speech competition happened again. Uh, so we just wanted to shout out some of the winners. Um, first place was Mave Lynch. Uh, second place was my Michaela Whitaker. Um, and then third place was Macy Murro. So those were uh that's a big thing that happened this week. >> And then to honor the teachers, Miss Willinger, Mr. Kmand, and Mrs. Lesniak were selected to present at a statewide Massachusetts Council for Social Studies conference in March. and it was a highly competitive process in which um the applicants were specifically selected to present. So to get that was an honor for
them. Um and Mr. Kermon's session that he will be presenting is entitled leveraging geographic tools to understand democracy. Miss Willingers and Miss Lesniak will present autonomy and activism helping students become informed and engaged citizens. So excited to hear them. Um, this past Thursday, Miss Rundle ran an early college planning night for ninth and tth grade caregivers. Um, I was there volunteering for National Honor Society. So, I um, watched that presentation. I think it went pretty well. There was a lot of good stuff in there. Um, and I think this Wednesday they're going to hold an step up night uh, for ninth graders in the pack at six. So, that's just another thing coming up. um and a nod to the um tables we have now in the language hallway. So that was a great addition
to talk about. But other than that, >> oh um sorry I mentioned last time about um a junior Luke Hanley who was working on his civic action project. Um I know you were asking for a link. He he gave me that link. >> Um >> yeah, >> send it to us. >> Yeah, he absolutely I can get that early. >> Thank you. Speaking of blue, there model UN. >> Oh, yes. >> Weekend did well. I think he was he did well there. >> I think he won bestell. I know Schilbert won best. >> Oh, who else was it? >> Oh, I'm not going to They all did well. And >> there was a big freshman showing too, which is great for sort of like the the upandcomers. So, they're >> learned a lot. >> Absolutely.
My brother came back telling me he wants to do it. I'm like he's like, "I want to do the DC troop." I'm like, "Tim, that's like a lot of money. I'm interested in this." He's like, "No, but it looks super fun." Well, that's great, but you can do it. I think it does get good repentance. It's a good great club to be a part of. So, I was like, if you want to be a part of it, go for it. >> Yeah. I think they said it um the Model UN advisors when they were presenting it. But, um there's like so much demand to go on these trips, but there just aren't a lot of trips. So like having these extra things especially for the underassman I think is really really valuable. >> Yeah. >>
All right. >> Thank you for the report. >> We have action items on our list tonight. Approval of minutes from last Monday. >> Motion on the minutes. I'll make a motion to approve the school committee minutes from February 2nd, 2026. >> Second. >> Okay. All in favor? >> Okay. And we have a donation. >> Yes. So, we have received a nice donation from Cassie and George Ty. I think I said their name correctly. In the amount of $2,520 and that is for the Exel program. I'm still learning about it, but I know that that includes the um lovely students who bring me my cup of tea and a snack every Friday morning. Uh so yeah, so I would ask that the school committee accept this donation. Um I'll make a motion that the school committee
vote to accept the um gift from Cassie and George Tibo for the amount of $2,520 with a great >> second. All in favor? >> I >> Thank you. >> Okay. Thank you. >> All right. I'll turn it over to you, Dr. Rock. >> Thank you very much. So, last week after our meeting on Monday night, Mrs. Hoo and I did a shorter version of that presentation to the select board last Tuesday and the advisory board last Thursday. And I think they were very appreciative of our level services budget. One of the big things we highlighted was how we transfer staff if we need to make some changes. We need to deal with enrollment spikes and they were very appreciative of that. So there were no substantive questions that came out of that other than the
request to look at our sub salaries which is something that we can certainly do. Um so with that I would just request a motion for a budget in the amount of 55 million29,6 unless there's any questions or further following questions. I don't have a question. I do have just a comment. Um, a couple. So, first just uh even something we didn't that didn't come up last Monday. Um, but looking at if I know we have pretty tight budget, I guess you could say. Um but if there if you had any um way to look into the um crossing guard over in um whatever it is 3 >> 3A Yeah. First parish I'll talk on those concerns with that area. >> Absolutely. >> Is this right here where the the light goes on like they push
the light? >> Yeah. you know, just comes up all the time. It's there's still a lot of everybody's aware of the concerns. I know we've had the um safe to school folks out there for Mass DOT and they've done in-depth analysis and so we know the concerns and I know we've done several steps and put money into making that crossing area safer. But I just wanted to mention it as we go through budget approval that that's something that still kind of exists for us. It's a safety issue. >> I feel like anytime anyone talks about 3A, it's always talked about as a state road, which is why we can't as situate decide to put a light in any of the other places that we might want one. Is there any I know you mentioned the
state to schools grant, but is there any other like state sources of revenue? I mean, I've looked into this extensively and haven't come up with any, >> but it seems like the most in reach solution for us is the crossing guard option. >> Barring, you know, that we can the affordability of it. Um, >> are they employees of the police department? technically they are but and I'll talk to the chief and see what options might be available and I can certainly ask Mrs. Bart to look into that. >> Okay, perfect. Yeah, that would be much appreciated. >> Wouldn't be something I can correct on our school department budget just to be clear but appreciate that. Yeah, so it's not exactly tied to our budget more so >> appreciate that. Um motion on the 20 FY27
budget. >> Just want to make sure >> the number the this >> 55. All right. I'll make a motion that the school committee vote to approve the FY27 proposed budget at 55 million29,61 as presented. A second. >> Okay. All in favor? >> I wonder. >> All right. Assistant Superintendent Lynch. >> Teaching and learning update. >> Great. Um, so this week I just wanted to share that um, our elementary benchmark assessments were completed last week at the elementary level. So, um, K through five. So, as a reminder, students complete beginning of the year benchmark assessments, uh, within the first month of school and then around the middle of the year. You know, last week was we had the hundth day celebrations. So, um, we completed our middle of the year benchmark assessments. When those assessments are
completed, um we our elementary curriculum coordinators as well as math and reading specialists prepare that data and work with classroom teachers um and special educators during half half day data meetings. So this week those uh data meetings have commenced. So, at the elementary level, um, at all of our buildings, we're busy analyzing the data and looking at any improvements and changes we would need to make, uh, to win groups based on how students performed. Um, and it's not just reassigning students in win, but it's also thinking about adjustments to tier one instruction. So, this is a really good point to look at how students are doing, make any necessary adjustments. Um and with our focus on MTSS um it's not just academic data but it's also um data and and behavioral data. So our school
sites and school adjustment counselors also uh participate in these meetings. So, we're thinking about um supporting the whole child. Uh as we analyze this data um we're that's something that we'll we'll share these trends um out with the school committee and our community um on March 2nd. So, we have our um schedule for our elementary curriculum coordinators and our math and ELA department chair to participate in the March 2nd meeting to share some of those trends out. So, um, all of us at the elementary level are busy with the the data meetings, um, our teachers, our principles, specialists, and we're, um, excited to provide an update about, um, those meetings and communications in in early March. So, let's find a quick update on teaching. Um are are families going to receive those um midyear reports?
>> Yes, they do. Uh here we um the dyslexia screening regulations from Desi require sharing information about reading K2. Here we provide uh benchmark data in both uh reading and math at all grade levels. and the minimum requirements twice a year. We provide it three times a year. So yes, we are providing that to families. We recognize that one of the reports uh from the fall was not as simple to read as could have been. So we've made that improvement and um once the the data is all set, we'll share those out with families. >> Okay. >> Other questions? Okay. All right. Thank you. Report of the policy subcommittee. We are going to go through the C's. Um, yep. So, in our packet was the chart with situate policies and mask policies and a note
column. Um, yeah. Thank you. New format. Very exciting format. Thanks. Um, so my thinking was that we would just kind of go bit row by row um and just call out anything that we wanted to pause on. Um, and then we don't have to go like super indepth in this moment. It can be more like, oh, this is something we'd like the policy subcommittee to to take. Um, and we will do that. Um, as you guys might remember, we are meeting this week on Thursday morning. um at which time we are still making those updates that we wanted to the B policies. We are also um doing making the updates that we had discussed last meeting to the kindergarten entrance policy so we can discuss again at our next meeting updated draft um and see
if we want to vote on that or not. So that's this Thursday. So um anyway, that's just where we're where we are in our cycle. Um so um we can just kind of take a gander through here. Um unless Yeah, why don't we just do this? So the first one is administration goals. Um my main noticing about the differences here was that the mask version is slightly more specific. Ours will say channels will be established and the mask one says the superintendent will establish. Um don't know that that's tremendously like you know ever point of view. Yeah. you know, but but I but I do on the other hand understand why mask probably made that shift just because sometimes if no one is assigned to something, it makes it easy to fall off, you know.
So, I also wouldn't mind kind of updating to their updated language. Looks like theirs was updated in 2022, so relatively recently, whereas ours is undated and therefore goodness knows, >> we know it was a long time ago. So, you know, that to me is like kind of an easy fix. There's not very many instances of it, just a couple. Um, but you know, sometimes I do agree with the notion that like >> just a little bit more pointed. >> Yeah. >> Otherwise, it's pretty standard. >> Yep. Um, the next one, school superintendent is almost exactly the same except that the mask policy uses gender neutral pronouns, which is a shift we've been trying to make as we update. So that's an easy one. Otherwise, it's pretty much exactly the same. >> The next one, it
looks like we have um a CB and mask has a CBD. So we have um a superintendent contract slash compensation and benefits. And I don't know if that's just kind of a little outdated. It looks like CBD really just talks about the contract. Mask doesn't have language about compensation and benefits as a policy. So, this could be something we could sort of investigate a bit more as to why we have that and whether it's needed. Um, my inclination is if mask doesn't have it, I don't know why we would need it. Maybe like an old vestage that >> redundant or just like inappropriately placed. >> Yeah, that's what I was kind of thinking too. But then I don't see CV anywhere else >> in mask. So, I don't know. Um, similarly, moving right along, CBI,
the mask language is much more specific here. Evaluation of the superintendent, and I do think this is something that we should probably dig into a bit, just that our evaluation of the superintendent is one of our main tasks and our policy is a bit more vague than policy. To me, this feels like an area that we would want to look at a little bit more. I think we it's another example that we we follow this in practice but we but it's not clear the policy right >> sometimes vague is >> right right I agree yes I agree we follow it in practice but I agree that >> why would we not just update the policy >> lots of 2022s >> Y um so we have a file or a policy CC administration organization Um and
mask does not >> very interesting another >> why do not know >> um and then CCB line and staff relations mass calls their staff relations other than that it's pretty much the same just seems like the name is updated I'm not I think fine is kind of old school like I'm thinking like a line and a pork chart kind of >> um kind grouping these together because in my brain they kind of go together. Um the next actually no there's another piece I guess it's further down so I'm not sure we can look into CC administration organization why have that >> CCB is weird because it's the same language but just a different title. >> Exactly. >> So it seems like if she's using cleanup like maybe just oldfashioned way of referencing it. Um, CE
is pretty much the same except with the gender neutral pronouns again. CH policy implementation is exactly the same. So, that's good. Oh, yeah. I guess I guess we stopped there. There's the next section. I think it is. Um, there's some cleanup to be done where there's some confusion between what we call a clerk and a secretary. Good. um because those two things get a little um tangled at some points and um >> we went through but I must have read that. Sorry. >> So, can I ask you a question about the the evaluation of the superintendent? I feel like we've revisited this one quite a bit. Yeah. Yes. >> So like in the mass policy it says superintendent blah blah blah blah reviewed in accordance with specified goals instead according to the evaluation cycle agreed
upon with the superintendent. >> So does that mean we as a school committee >> do not come up with a like a regular cycle that we think because we've talked a lot about doing midyear end of cycle or is this something we have to renegotiate every time? That's what this language makes it sound like >> that Desi expects us to evaluate a superintendent annually unless we move them to a every twoear cycle after we have had them for three years. I think there's a minimum amount of time that they have to have been evaluated annually before you can move to the every two years which is kind of mirror some of the teacher and principal evaluations too. So I think that's why Desi has that. >> Yeah. I just I I thought in our conversations
we had talked about embedding in some of our meetings like updates. >> Yeah. >> And maybe that's not a place for here, but I'm just wondering like where would that kind of process live >> live if like you know if we had complete turnover in the committee where would someone look to get that >> transition is all I'm saying. Yeah. So >> that's a great question. >> Yeah. That's actually something that's why we were talking about the town election date actually was because we were trying to think about when to put Tom's eval because we didn't want to put it too late and have it be after an election when we have someone brand new coming in would have had to do. >> Yes, we do. >> No, we don't. >> Yes, we do. >>
Oh, yeah. >> Anyway, >> we definitely >> Yes, we do. We do >> every >> I think we definitely do. >> Why would we not? >> Internals goals. We still follow his work and effort. >> Absolutely. >> We still have somebody in the role. >> But this is why we were looking up. And maybe later one say I think what Carrie is saying is a great point and this is something we think about a lot is like it's really challenging in practice to keep sort of like the running log I always dream of of like you know because every time we hear an update it is actually evidence of progress towards goals but we're just not tracking it. Yeah. And so that's the challenge and I don't know how to solve that. I think the
data binders get us one step further. We're getting much more data than we used to. We're kind of seeing that marching forward a little bit more. But in terms of artifacts other than that, I don't know that we are still quite. It's just hard. I don't know. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> But I agree with you. It's like we want somethingable to kind of >> we just make it easier. It would make it easier all around. >> Tie a presentation to the goal like very specifically this presentation. >> Even just like every month or something have it be like this is where we are so that by you get by the time you get to the end easy to say >> not all is lost. It's February and we just heard that the midyear data is
in and so we're actually at the right time probably for like one of those kind of bigger checkpoints. So maybe when you guys are thinking about that midyear data checkpoint, we can try to be a little bit more intentional about doing that step. >> Yeah, >> because everything the pieces are there. We're just >> like the update update on sea director. >> Exactly. And it's happening. >> It's happening. >> Yeah. Budget, >> the presentations we heard from all the department chairs that tie back to a goal, you know. >> Yeah. >> I do think it's worth thinking about. >> I do too. >> Right. in collaboration. >> Definitely. >> And technically it helps everyone because it helps Tom not have to have this like monumental >> time in the brain dump at the end >>
in us too like oh well what was December like? >> So yeah that's that's what we're that's what we're aiming toward. That's what we're >> I think that's best practices even in the educator like you want to have your artifacts and your evidence ongoing to make your binder but In practice, it's hard because you have your obviously commitment day flying away. >> You remember one of our goals, one of our policies that we're going to add in is our school booty self. Again, we've been kind of doing it in practice, not had a policy on it. But that's also a place for us to try to think like I'm obsessed with this idea too of like our annual cadence. Yeah, I just think we could be more predictable sometimes and that's just like work someone
has to do is sit down like I we saw a great example at the mask conference was get wrong and I don't know some district had a great example of just like this annual chart where they're like here's the general cadence of our year and we kind of always know like the calendar November we do this this month we do that we can start building that we can start building in that what you're talking about here >> we have that we have a we have the We have the framework, but >> finding the time to plug it in and all but I think that's part it be good to publish something that it doesn't have to be set in stone like yes we said this but >> things shift we had a snow day everything
got like but you know >> or a year when we're opening a new school that might throw our traditional cadence off by a couple of weeks or months even sometimes. >> Yeah. But I think even just having that checklist and knowing we'll ever be opening new schools frequently. >> But I think just having a checklist being able to say like, "Oh, if we move this, it moves that." >> Right now that all kind of lives like our not the best, >> right? I like I mean something like school calendar though is a great one because it helps families and you know if it's generally known that we discuss and vote calendar in November >> you can fairly rely on that to be true every year no matter what because it is important and we can
we can certainly make that happen. So yeah, maybe there are some broad, you know, um annual like these are things that happen consistently every year that we have to do on repeat. Yep. And we can rely on them to take place during this span of time that we could work on a little bit. >> Yeah, but that's a good point, Terry, to call that back. Um, anything else on these early seed policies? Brian, do you have anything you wanted to add before we bring this back to our subcommittee on Thursday? >> I don't think so. >> Okay. >> Thank you. >> Anything else, Tom? In your experience with like just being in multiple districts and evaluate your experience with evaluation >> and it's always gathering the data and gathering the artifacts and I've seen plenty
of superintendents, you know, putting the binders together in major. So, one of the things I'm already doing in the background since we do everything in Google Docs now anyway. Yeah, >> I have all these presentations. So, I have them and it's in, like you said, in my own mind, I'm assigning them to the goal. I just need to be a little explicit about that. >> Actually, what I'm doing right now is using my goals document and attaching these presentations to it where they would belong. >> Yeah. >> And so, it's just kind of along the way. And so, we do have to present it. It's going to look like the same document, but we'll have a whole lot more attachments on the propulsion. Like for example, the C director, all the work we did to,
you know, the hiring committee, all the names, that's all been attached to it. Now, >> thank you for the policy update. >> Yep. Our next meeting will have return to the kindergarten policy and an update on the Our next chunk of policy should be the second half of this, but I'll keep you posted. >> Okay. All right. warrants nothing tonight. >> Oh, there is. Sorry, I haven't even had a chance to get reading. >> Yeah. Is there are you reading it? You're reading it tonight or not? Oh, okay. So, there's nothing to read. Okay. Just a sign. >> Gotcha. >> Those are just ones that for whatever reason didn't get brought to you physically earlier for a signature. >> Okay. >> So, now it's like two weeks later, two months later, and I'm >> Yep.
>> catching up, so to speak. >> Okay. connecting dots. >> Um, subcommittee reports any one thing to remind everybody we're doing office hours and I had a nice conversation. No one came to our office hour together. >> I love that Janice and I are >> on Thursday night >> 7 to 8 Citra Town Library. Um, and another important date that we want to start reminding people about is the um, redistricting meeting on February 25th at 6 PM in the performing arts center. And that will be an opportunity for the community to hear some draft proposals of um, plans. So, it'll be a really big meeting and we're hoping to really get the word out to families, particularly those with young children who might not be on our email list and things. So yeah, that's an
important to hoping the AI news picks this up. >> Yes. You want to repeat the date and time? February 25th >> at 6 p.m. at the >> performing arts center. Y >> and there will be you can watch it remotely hybrid. >> Hybrid for child care and things like that too, >> community members. All right. >> We um we do have a financial forecast meeting on >> Oh, that's right. So, we hope to have positive news, but we'll look for sure on Thursday. >> Sorry, Peter. I announced your forecast. >> Yep. Thursday 9 Friday. >> Sorry. Friday the 13th, 9 >> Friday 900 a.m. at the uh town hall. If anyone is welcome to come, but it's just an update on final figures that came in from the state. >> Excellent. >> All right. >>
Just a shout out to just because I was there, but last this past Friday was well this Friday and Saturday sectionals for swimming. >> So because I I I the all the student swimmers that were there did really well. But I want to give a shout out to Bella Trabasquez who's a sophomore. >> She broke the school record in 500. >> She came in second >> and she dropped like 10 seconds. >> Yeah, >> the girl who won it was like >> she that did awesome. Great. Want to give a shout out? >> Can you just repeat their um practice schedules for swimming? >> Tell us when >> the regular regular season. the regular season they practice um from 6:00 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday in way up. >> So the kids a
huge >> it is a huge win >> especially in the winter. >> Yeah. Yeah. But shout out to them and the coaches because uh the kids and the parents because they uh shout out to the older students who drive the >> freshman Yeah. >> and sophomores and the culture of swim is so positive that the kids >> do not mind getting up at 5. Do what they love. >> Great. >> All right. Anything else? Sir, we are concluding this meeting tonight at 6:42. >> Motion to adjurnn at 6:42. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> Not not terrible. Yeah.
