Nick has been a parah at BTC for the past two years. This year he is in Chris Place's first room as a onetoone par profofessional. Nick has stepped
up to be a champion for a student. Their partnership has made this student's transition to his new school building and new classroom nearly seamless. With Nick's help, this student has shown improvements across the board at school and can frequently be seen smiling and laughing on walks or taking sensory breaks when told they're told not to when they are not back in the classroom getting work done. Keep the great work up, guys. Thank you, Nick, for everything you do. All right, good evening. Uh, I have the honor of giving the above and beyond and shining star award for both uh, Lathers and Memorial. Um, first up for the shining star for Lathers is Elliot Llewellyn. Congratulations. 009a true definition of a shining star student. Each day she comes to school with a bright smile, ready to support both her teachers and classmates. She is eager to learn during whole group lessons, consistently raises her hand, and actively participates during rotations. Ellie stays focused, works independently in her space, and kindly helps classmates who may be struggling with their work. Ellie shows remarkable kindness and awareness of the different needs within our classroom. She is always willing to lend a helping hand, whether that means walking a friend to the office when they are not feeling well or es escorting a classmate to the GSRP hallway to visit younger siblings classrooms. She does all of this with genuine care, kindness, and grace. Ellie is also an incredible bright student who has already mastered nearly all of the
kindergarten site words we're learning this year. She is a wonderful role model and a true joy to have in the classroom. Congratulations. >> All right, the next shining star student for Lathers is Naan Stevenson. Nan, >> congratulations. Come back up here. >> All right. She is incredibly kind, passionate, and deeply dedicated to her students. Sarah meets meets each child exactly where they are, embracing them with patience and genuine care. She sees her students as whole individuals, valuing valuing not only their academic growth, but also their emotional well-being, communication skills, and life development. One of the most impactful things about Sarah's teaching is her unwavering attention to her students emotional and mental health. She takes the time to understand each child's inner world and tailor her approach to support their individual needs. Rather than relying on a onesizefits-all method, she consistently adjusts schedules, activities, and expectations to best serve
her students, creating an environment where they feel safe, supported, and understood. Every day, she outwardly celebrates their accomplishments, building their confidence, and connecting with others. The students are drawn to her genuine spirit and are so happy to see her every day. Sarah's natural calmness, her consistent search for new ways to help her students succeed, and her perseverance even on the most challenging days are what make her an exceptional special education teacher. Her classroom is more than a place of learning. It's a safe space where students are encouraged to grow, feel valued, and believe in themselves. All right. The memorial shining star student is Emmaine Adams. All right. She was nominated by a teacher. My nomination for shining star is Emmaine. Emiline is a wonderful member of our classroom. She is always willing to help both
her classmates and the teachers. She is eager to share her strategies and so others can learn from her. Emiline is kind, thoughtful, and consistent con consistently looks out for those around her. All right, the next shining star student for Memorial is Jubilee. Come on up here. >> Jubilee was nominated by her teacher, Miss Weep. I'd like to nominate Jubilee as a shining star. Jubilee has shown amazing growth this year, increasing 12 points in math, 18 points in reading on the NWA. Her hard work is truly paying off. Jubilee is a wonderful role model in our classroom. She consistently raises her hand, participates in discussions, and is
always willing to help her friends. She is kind, responsible, and puts forth her best effort each day. She takes care of our classroom supplies and takes pride in keeping our classroom clean and organized. She truly cares about others and always looks for ways to help. Great job. >> All right, last but not least for Memorial, the going above and beyond staff member is Rebecca Oman. Congratulations. She was nominated by Joy Pelky, a teacher. I'm thankful for a co-orker who has consistently supported me, guided me, and truly been a role model. Having Rebecca next door has been a blessing. She never hesitates to include me if she copies lessons. She always makes extras for me. If I need a certain supply, she always offers and helps make sure that I know about schedules, updates, and even
more. Even on her busiest days, she still offers help and shares ideas. Thank you. Congratulations. Thank you. I get the privilege of doing our Douglas school. First up is our shining star student Kar Hassim. Let me tell you about them. They were nominated by Mrs. Mrs. Edwards, Miss Lam Masters, and Miss Hoy. We are so excited to nominate you for the Shining Star Award this month. We are proud of the way you have stepped up. It is a joy to have you in the classroom. Kar is new to our classroom and has jumped right in. He is playing with the other students and completing all his assignments. He is grasping concepts rather quickly and tries his best. He sometimes will have to fix an assignment, but when he does, he will get straight to work
without any arguing or complaining. We are especially impressed with your hard work during our last math power hour intervention Friday. While the class was participating in our number talks, you didn't just sit back, you stepped up. It was amazing to hear you explain several different strategies to solve the problem. Later, during the story problem portion, your willingness to share your math thinking helped everyone around you understand the lesson better. That is exactly what true leadership looks like. You are patient, clear, and encouraging with your peers. and you showed us all that there is more than one way to find an answer. Keep up the fantastic work and positive attitude. You are having a wonderful impact on our classroom community. >> Okay. And our staff member is uh Nicole Masters. Uh, Miss L Masters was nominated
by the principal, Jim Bone. It is with great apprec appreciation that I nominate Nicole Masters for the staff above and beyond award at Douglas. Nicole could win this award every month because that's the kind of teacher she always is. Let me start by saying that Miss Lasters cares deeply about her students and will do whatever it takes to make sure they are successful. She builds relationships with them, different differentiates her instructions, uses best practices, partners with her patients, parents, excuse me, and works closely, right? Works works closely with the other staff members who serve as her students. Now, let's talk about some of the additional things that she does for our students and school. There are a lot. First, she runs our safety program and has for many years. A lot of work goes into
getting the safety belts, collecting the applications, assigning bus and door safeties, managing the violation slips, holding meetings to train them, and switching them out every card marking. Next, she has volunteered to do our school yearbook this year. This involves collecting pictures, organizing pages, learning the web program, working with the life touch rep, and putting the whole thing together. She is also in charge of our afterchool math academy that kicked off a few weeks ago. This is a six week long intervention program for struggling students. She makes sure the entire program runs smoothly and the students are all picked up. A few more things Miss Lasters does is lead our fourth grade team of teachers as the grade level facilitator and she mentors she mentors new teachers at Douglas. She was voted on as a team
leader by her peers because of the respect they have for her. Nicole does all these things and a whole lot more. You will see her serving on our PBS team, volunteering at the music nights, visiting her students events, helping with the NEHS induction night and etc. She is the true definition of an amazing teacher who always goes above and beyond. Douglas is a better place because of her. Next is Fington and the shining star student is Avery Strauss. >> Avery was nominated by her teacher, Jennifer King. We are thrilled to recognize Avery Strauss, one of our Farmington students. She has the character we strive for in our school community. Avery is a shining example of the six pillars of character that we celebrate at Farmington. She is caring, respectful, and responsible each day. Being pleasant,
and courteous is just one way she demonstrates respect for her peers and teachers. She approaches her students by persevering, showing her responsibility by always completing her work and doing her best. Avery is an exceptional student and we are proud to honor her as Farmington's Shining Star student of the month. And our staff member nominated by Mr. Robinson is Jenny Kane, the teacher. Uh Mr. Robinson said, "I would like to nominate Jenny King, an outstanding veteran fifth grade teacher, for her above and beyond teacher recognition." Miss King consistently demonstrates a deep commitment to students, families, and colleagues, and truly represents the very best of our profession. With years of experience in the classroom, Miss King brings a wealth of knowledge, patience, and dedication to our school community. She creates a classroom environment where students feel supported,
challenged, and inspired to do their best each day. Her ability to connect with students and build meaningful relationships helps her foster both academic growth and personal confidence. Miss King goes above and beyond by investing extra time to ensure every student has the support they need to succeed. Whether it's providing additional help, collaborating with colleagues, or communicating with families, she always puts students first. Miss King's leadership, positivity, and professionalism make her a valued mentor and role model for both students and staff. Our school community is stronger because Miss King's dedication and passion for education. It is with great appreciation that I nominate Miss King for the above and beyond recognition. I believe our Burgger Transition Center Shining Star student may be in the building. Uh today's student is Thomas Biolante. Hi. >> Congratulations. Come up here,
Thomas. >> This is for you. Can you hold it up for everybody? >> Can you turn around? >> I'm gonna Okay. I'm going to tell people about you. Okay. >> Okay. So, look. Go look at Show your award. Okay. Yeah, there's your award. So, Thomas was nominated by Terry Bertasio and Tracy Pass. >> We would like to nominate Thomas as the Shining Star student of the month. >> That's you. Thomas is always willing to help anyone at any time. >> Thomas has had a fantastic month. He is a hard worker and very helpful in food prep class, chopping vegetables, making Jell-O, and helping make desserts. >> Thomas always sets a good example for other students by following directions, being kind, and always being safe. Thomas does well when we are out shopping, and is always
helpful by pushing the cart and helping pick out items on our list. He is friendly to others who are shopping and likes to say hi. >> And tells everyone to have a great day. You like shopping? >> Yeah. >> He is very happy to help deliver lunches because he can talk to staff members while doing so. Thomas also has a silly side and likes to make others laugh throughout the day. He has a way of brightening everyone's day. Congratulations. >> Our shining star student for the middle school is Avon Smith. All right. Avon was nominated by the middle school admin team and Mrs. Faul. Avon is new to our district this year, but has already had such a positive impact on our school community. His awareness of our PBIS expectations shows through his actions as
he is kind to staff and students alike, demonstrating his understanding of being respectful. He is on time to all of his classes which highlights his ability to be responsible and just last week he showed his understanding of safety and he attempted to support another student who is in an unsafe situation. We greatly appreciate all the positivity that Avon has brought to our building and look forward to seeing him grow within our Cougar community. Our going in be going above and beyond teacher teacher is Kellen Kennedy. Miss Kennedy was nominated by the middle school administration. Miss Kellen has been essential to starting and leading our PLC guiding coalition for our interact intervention program lunch. She leads team meetings, helps create materials for staff and students and presents to our staff. Kellen is a strong advocate for
our students. Ch champion that word championing the need for dedicated time during the school day so they can receive support and succeed in their classes. We are grateful for her commitment to building the system and culture that will make this program successful. Her leadership is a driving force of this important work and we are excited to get this program running at Garden City Middle School. Hey, tonight I have the honor of presenting for the high school. Our shining star student is Ashley Milligan. So Ashley was nominated by her teacher Danielle Mura. So Ashley has gone above and beyond as a member of student council and as a student in the art department. Ashley consistently performs duties outside of the position she holds on student council. She has helped with the birthday calendar twice this year
and will stop and make a great showcase at the drop of a hat. She has been at the forefront when it comes to all the senior class events from full construction, window painting, hall decorating, and planning for prom in the classroom. She has been invaluable to our new ceramics class, helping organize, load the kiln, and assist other students. As an AP student, her work has been excellent and on time this year, always trying to improve on her work. She has also been very involved in theater, on stage, and behind the scenes this year, taking on a new role as a student director. Ashley is a true leader, and I know she will do well in her future career as an educator. And for our high school uh going above and beyond staff member, we have
Steve Reine. >> Congratulations. >> Uh he was nominated by Megan Wilhoy, parent and also teacher. She says, "I want to nominate Mr. Racine for the above and beyond award, taking a moment to send a huge thank you his way. As a parent, you hope your child encounters a teacher who truly gets them. Mr. Reine has gone so far above and beyond that, whether it's helping her navigate a tough academic concept or being a steady listening ear for life's purpos. His support has meant the world to her and to us. the ultimate proof of his impact. My daughter signed up for statistics as an elective for funsies just so she could be in his classroom again this year. She is hoping he will take on another math class that she can join next year. Hint hint.
Behind the beyond the daily laughs and lessons, he has helped her find her life's passion. She went from being unsure about her future to officially deciding to pursue statistics in college. Mr. Racing didn't just reach didn't just teach her a subject. He shaped her career path through his passion, dedication, and being an inspirational mentor. He has left a lasting impression on her life that she'll carry long after graduation. We are beyond grateful for everything he has done for our daughter. Thank you for being the kind of teacher students remember forever. For this reason, you truly deserve the going above and beyond award. He's two minutes away. So, we're gonna start with a Cambridge staff member going above and beyond, Nick Leon. Congratulations. >> Now, everyone gets to hear how awesome you are. The March Above
and Beyond award is presented to Nick Leon of GRBS, our afternoon custodian who joined Cambridge at the start of the school year. Nick has quickly made a positive impact on our building through his strong work ethic and attention to detail. Nick is a true professional who clearly takes pride in his work. Because of his efforts, the building and classrooms consistently look outstanding each morning. His dedication helps ensure that Cambridge remains a welcoming and well-maintained environment for both staff and students. We are fortunate to have Nick as part of our Cambridge GRBS team. Working as part of our custodial staff, he helps promote and maintain a strong culture of cleanliness throughout the building. And I was going to dance and sing. Okay, I'm sorry you guys will have to wait for that. >> Our shining star
student from Cambridge is Darius Calhoun. >> Hi, Darius. Congratulations. >> Wait, hold on now. Yes, stand here. Turn around. Show everyone your award. Well, I tell him how awesome you are. Darius began at Cambridge during the 2324 school year and has become a favorite of staff and students. As a student, he has worked diligently at completing courses each trimester to earn his credits to graduate. Even when life got in the way, Darius found a way to reach down deep and find the motivation to continue his academic pursuit of a high school diploma. Throughout his time in our program, he has shown himself in a polite, inviting, and pleasant manner. One of Darius's many strengths is his willingness to help other students by participating in his classes and being respectful to all staff. Darius has a
smile and positive attitude every day that he shows up to Cambridge. And this positivity is infectious to those around him. Last year and a bit this year, Darius had come early or stayed late to just shoot hoops with other students, showing leadership in our gym through positive and respectful play. There is no doubt that Darius will leave Cambridge a better place when he is done with his academics on MARCH 16TH. OKAY, CAN WE GET one more round of applause for all of our award winners this evening? And just a special thanks for all of you who took time to uh make that nomination. It's very much appreciated. Thank you. >> Okay. Item nine, presentation. A Cambridge Mark, >> you're up. >> We will just let them Okay, for those who are left, uh, yeah, first
of all, before I get started, I really want to thank my staff. How many of them came out today? uh to honor our building and what we do here at Cambridge. So, thank all of you. So, I just really quickly um again, as always, welcome to Cambridge. We're excited to have you here um to give us a moment to really talk about the successes that we are seeing in the 2526 school year. I said to somebody earlier today, I really can't believe that it's March 9th and how quickly this is going. Um, so believe it or not, this is the total number of our office referrals so far this school year. Um, we have really worked hard over the last couple years to uh get the staff invested in seeing what we can do in
the classroom before they inundate me. I mean before they send it to the office. Um, you will see most of our issues, no shock in a high school are phone related. um something that we keep talking about and I know and as an admin team with the governor signing the law that we will I'm sure have many conversations about uh going into the next year and then just those things now you will see and I apologize ahead of time you will see there's something completely missing from this this year because today as of March 9th we have yet to have one physical altercation at Cambridge's school And I really feel that this is because of the culture that the staff have continued over the many years that Cambridge has been around to create here. Um,
and that we have students who are beginning to either ignore each other when they get into situations or figure out ways to work it out or switch from the AM to the PM. We don't know. So, but again, it is something uh that we're proud of. One of the other things that we have done this year is that we're we are on a daily count of how many days we can go without incidents. I told the students at the beginning of the year, if we can get to 30 days for AM or 30 days for PM, there'll be some kind of pizza party or whatever. Now, we haven't got to 30 yet, but I will tell you the PM program, while our trimester does technically end on Thursday. So if everything goes well this week
they'll be at 29 on Thursday. So technically we try we tend to end it at each trimester but we'll give them an extra day so that they can so somebody can finally earn that. So again the things that we are just trying to do to promote positive uh behaviors. Uh, one of the other big things that is part of our improvement plan and our building goals this year was to increase communication between the building um and families um from the bottom to the top. Right? So, uh we have a spreadsheet that is staff are making communication with families. They fill out the spreadsheet. Um and this is not just the negative stuff. This is also positive phone calls home. You can see that our largest mode of use is text messaging. Um all most of
the staff have uh use the Google number. Um but we have found that our parents are more likely to respond to a text than any other form of communication. And then you'll see there um the different communication types one way or two-way. Obviously, our goal is always two-way, but again, right, the uh our parent population historically um and I think from past school interactions um don't always respond. So, we have seen an increase though in some of the two-way responses that we get. And then you'll see in the red uh the different things whether you know academic concerns but again trying to let families know further in advance uh if their student is having an academic concern and what they can do about it uh and so forth. So we're very pleased with uh that
you'll see now at the end and we'll get to it in a minute. Keep in mind the attendance concern and I'll tell you why that number is a little bit lower in a moment. Oh I'm going to tell you now. So uh one of the things we instituted Sheila what's it been three years now I think yeah so three years ago we do not do robocalls at Lakeland we do personal calls so Sheila who has been at here for >> 30 years um uh is here on Mondays and Wednesdays and we have Sylvester who is here every day but he does Tuesdays and Thursdays and around second hour they pull an attendance report and They second hour in the morning and then second hour in the afternoon and they make phone calls to see where
the student is. Is there anything that we need to do? Is there anything we need to be concerned about? And one of the other pieces of that communication is that Sheila and Sally get great information whether there's something going on that we don't know about. Is there family thing going on? Is it a social emotional thing? So we're able to not just deal with the attendance issue, but using that information, we can actually whether we then need to send them to the social workers or counselor um and so forth to get to get that done. With that said, we have seen over the course of the last several years a regular attendance um depending on the day, but we really have seen that overall increase and even more so this year on count day. Each
of our count days, we actually saw 90% or more attendance because apparently if you tell parents money is involved, they actually make sure their kids are at school. So, we appreciate that too. So, but we are very pleased overall with uh our attendance gains that we keep seeing and then the very famous NWA score. So if you were here at this time last year around last year, you saw we had huge gains in our NWA because as hey we kind of put some meat on the bone of NWA where we took those scores and students who were way below grade level. We were having them do some uh math and reading strategy courses and the kids realized that they didn't want to have to take those courses because they didn't really need them to take
the NWA with more uh efficacy. Um so this year because we started that last year our gains aren't as much but we are still seeing the gains happen. Also, one of the harder pieces here is obviously we don't know what their NWA scores are coming into our building. So, the first time they take it, depending when they come in, obviously we also have a lot of students who may take the fall one and then we don't see them again or they come in in the winter. So, we don't have the fall data uh as well. But we are very pleased to see that our reading scores continue to go up as do our math scores. And again, that's the hard work and dedication of uh all of our teachers, not just our English and math
teachers. Okay, now for big excitement. You may not know, so the last two years, so we are part of where is it? Right here. Um the Michigan Alternative Education Organization, they hold a conference every year and for this will be the fourth year since they started their video contest. The first year, even though I will say our video was the best, uh we didn't really place for, second, third. The last two years, we have placed first place. um which comes with a $500 uh check which um our one of our social workers Dan Jones who kind of spearheads with our video class uh with Dan Morta creating the video and we use that money for his Wednesday after school club that he does with our students. So um this is going to be this year.
You are the first people to actually see our submission for this year. So, we're all about the three repeat. Um, although I'm nervous that Mayo will not allow a three repeat, but we are hoping that they do. Not what I really wanted. Okay, I'm not going to Here we go. I still don't like it. Hold on. Sorry. Please forgive. Yeah. Do it this way. Bye everyone. E+. Oh my god. OH MY GOD. I PASSED. OH MY. >> I wish I knew you a little better. THIS IS KIND OF OH MY GOD. 4 3 2 1 That was it for a minute here. Hold. Hold up. Hold him. Hold him. Four, three, two, one. My suggestion, warm relationships. Enjoy life and do not be scared to not care what others think. When you are older and
you have reached that point of life when you look back at everything, I want you to say, "I didn't waste a single moment. Thanks, Thank you, Mr. Kay, and good luck with the video. Uh, item 10, comments from the audience focused on today's agenda, and we have none. Item 11, approval of the general consent agenda items. A, regular meeting minutes of February 23rd, 2026. Item B, the Burgger Baylor BTC classroom equipment. Mr. Whisk. Uh, thank you, Madam President. M Vice President or President, sorry. Uh, on April 25th, 2025, Garden City Public Schools received a discretionary funds allocation from Wayne Resa designated under the act 18 program. These funds are authorized for use of purchase services, supplies, or capital expenditures directly supporting the district's act 18 initiatives. The district has chosen to invest these funds in new classroom equipment for the Burgger Baylor and Burgger Transition Center programs in partnership with NBS Commercial Interiors, which provides access to consortium price pricing through ENI cooperative services, a nonprofit organization that meets or exceeds competitive
RFP standards. Garden City Public Schools will ensure cost-effective purchasing aligned with regulatory guidelines. This final purchase effectively utilizes the remaining discretionary fund allocation from the 2425 period. According to current fiscal guidelines, these funds must be fully spent by June 30th of 2026. Uh, it is my recommendation that the board of education approve the bid from NBS Commercial Interiors in the amount of $80,38024 cents for the new classroom equipment at Burgger Baylor and Burgger Transition Center schools. Motion is in order. >> Any discussion? All in favor? >> Any opposed? The motion passes. Item 13, comments from the audience. And again, we have none this evening. Item 14, review and recommendations. Superintendent, other central office admins. Mr. Fischer. >> Madame President, uh, thank you. I just want to again offer congratulations to all of our shining star
students and our above and beyond staff members. It was nice to have a very solid turnout tonight and certainly a lot uh that's worthy to celebrate. Uh, thank you again to Mr. Kay and the Cambridge team for this evening's presentation on programming here at Cambridge. And as I've shared previously with with board members in the community, you know, we're honored to have the program, the Cambridge program here uh as part of Garden City Public Schools. There are 33 public school districts uh that make up Wayne County Schools and right around 41 separate communities. The wonderful thing about Cambridge is we have representative students from all of those communities, all of those all of those school districts attend this program. gives those young young people an opportunity to have an on-time graduation or an opportunity to
earn a high school diploma. Right? We know that the traditional setting of a regular high school may not be the best fit for everybody, especially with some of the challenges that are out there today. So, it remains an incredible honor. Just like it it's an honor to have the Verger program in our community, it's also a great honor to have the Cambridge program here at Garden City Public Schools. So, we're happy to see it celebrated and recognized tonight through Mr. K's uh presentation. Uh just a quick word uh for the community. Please be mindful spring sports are starting up. We're going to have a lot of athletes out and about board members. Encourage you to check that calendar as we have uh spring sports roll out at Garden City High School and then followed by
Garden City Middle School. Also be some kids out there on the track teams out and about. So, I just want to encourage everybody to kind of be mindful of those crosswalks and mindful of safety as kids are out and about for practices. You may have noticed a a small uh sign out in front of uh Garden City High School announcing the uh spring production uh for Frozen, the Broadway musical. We're very excited uh for the theater production there at Garden City High School under Mr. Bennett's leadership. Uh that show will run Friday, April 24th, Saturday, April 25th, and a matinea showing on Sunday, April 26th. We'll happily host our friends from the senior tower on the Sunday matinea on the April 26. Board members, you're welcome to join and we look forward to another great,
spectacular, and thrilling production uh from our Garden City High School theater program. Cabinet team, any commentary or anything you'd like to share at this time? All right. Uh, just a word out there for the board and the community, our next regular board meeting is Monday, March 23rd. Central office will be the venue for that and it'll be Monday, March 23rd at 7 p.m. Thank you. >> Thank you. Item 15, review and recommendations. Anyone have anything this evening? >> Madam President, um, I just want to thank uh, Mr. K again for the presentation, for the video. Good luck on that. Hopefully there's a three repeat. Um, and again, just the culture that you brought to the school, it's obviously shown in everything that you're doing here. So, congratulations to you and your staff. >> Anyone else?
Okay, moving on. Item 16, adjournment. A motion is in order. >> Madame President, I move to adjourn. >> We're missing Sarah. >> Is there support? Any discussion? All in favor? >> I. >> All right, we are adjourned. Thank you everyone for coming this evening.
