Um, grades one through nine were testing
above the expected norm across the board in math and reading. So, that was great to see. Um, and we also were able to look at some of the tools provided to the teachers that allow them to see a student's score and plan accordingly based on those scores on what to do for that student to help them succeed. >> Thank you. Moving on to item eight, shining star above and beyond certificate. Mr. Fischer. >> Madame President, thank you very much. If you want to turn and hold your certificate nice so we can get get some pictures for your is that your mom was nominated by Lena
Suan, a kindergarten teacher. She says, "I'm excited to nominate Wasam for the Shining Star Award. He is an outstanding kindergarten student in my class and a great example for his classmates. He always follows our expectations of being safe, being kind, and doing his best. Asam is especially kind and compassionate with his friends. One of his classmates was afraid during a fire drill that we had, and he gave her a really big hug while she was crying and then held her hand the entire time. For these reasons, I am recognizing Wasim as a shining star for our school. [applause] We have a second shining star from Lathers, Arya Tooth Muhammad. [applause] >> There you go, sweetheart. You want to turn around and let everybody see? She was also nominated by kindergarten teacher Lena Suan. She's Arya

She has touched so many lives. For these reasons, I am nominating my awesome colleague Alyssa for the Lathers Above and Beyond award. [applause] >> Uh, moving on, we have lather or memorial. We're also doing um shining star student Miles Tyson. [applause] >> Congratulations, Miles. He was nominated by Miss Fost, his teacher, and Miss Nani, a teacher. This is what makes Miles a shining star is his big heart. He quickly
built relationships with staff around the building when he came to Memorial. He memorized his teachers, Mrs. Voss and Mrs. Nani's names faster than any other student. He even remembers Mrs. Lynch, who shares a room with Miss Nani and announces golden awards every week. What is most impressive is that he remembers Mrs. McBride, who hosted his class for Moving Up Day last year. He's always ready with a hug and brings a positive attitude every day. He has the courage to never give up and try his best, which is the motto he uses whenever he is faced with a challenge. We are so lucky to have Miles as part of the Memorial community. Congratulations. [applause] [applause] For our Memorial Above and Beyond staff member, we have Kenji Fu Fugetta, building sub. [applause] Congratulations. >> Mr. Fugetta has
been an important part of the Memorial family for several years now as our building sub. But to the students, he is much more than that. He is the greeter when students get off the bus in the morning, offering a big hello, often receiving hugs and smiles from the students. He is a mentor who works with several of our students, helping them to know that they are loved, they are smart, and that they can do hard things. To our staff, Kenji is the person who we can call in any situation, and he is there to assist. When we are short staffed, he is agreeable and excited to assist. At the end of the day, if needed, he helps guide the students to the bus. Above all, he loves what he does and truly wants to make
a positive impact on our students. In celebration of the spooky season, Mr. Fugetta came up with a project where all of our students would come together to help a group of aliens from outer space. The students loved this project and certainly love him. We are truly blessed that he is part of our memorial family. [applause] >> [applause] >> I have the honor of giving the shining star student from Douglas their award tonight and that is Llaya Clark. [applause] Congratulations. Great job. All right, let me tell you about Laya. Lla was nominated by your teacher, Miss Bon Bonovitz. She said, "I am proud to nominate Laya for Shining Star student. Laya always shows kindness, responsibility, and has a positive attitude. She works hard on every assignment, helps her classmates when they need support, and always follows
classroom rules. Good job." >> Laya sets a wonderful example for others with her respectful behavior and cheerful smile every day. Way to go, Yla. >> [applause] >> And our Douglas 34 campus staff member is uh two. We have Becky and Art Fleming. [applause] [applause] >> How are you? Good to see you. Very welld deserved. Thanks for all you do. long time in our district. I think I can both have one. Look at that. Hold your pictures. Hold your awards for pictures. Here we go. And they are cooks for with our um food service program. And they were nominated by Lindsay Alfaron, a parent. She said, "I would like to nominate Miss Becky and Mr. Art Fleming for their outstanding work as lunch staff at Douglas. They are always so friendly and welcoming, greeting students with
smiles every day. My child often comes home saying, "Miss Becky said hi to me today." which shows just how much their kindness reaches the students personally. It's clear how much they care about making sure every student receives a nutritious meal. Mrs. Becky and Mr. Art work hard behind the scenes, arriving early to prepare lunches, organizing food distribution, and keeping everything running smoothly and cleanly. Their positive attitude and dedication make a real difference in our school community. And they are truly go above and beyond their roles. [applause] >> [applause] >> Thank you. >> All right. Good evening. Uh tonight I'm given the shining star student award for Farmington Elementary School. Uh this student is London Vanbell. [applause] Uh she was nominated by Crystal Lee, a teacher. Uh London demonstrates multiple characteristics of a Garden City Shining
Star student. London demonstrates a strong work ethic by making sure her assignments are always completed before she works on other tasks. She offers help to other students that don't understand or need some things shared in a different way. London actively listens during lessons and takes ownership of her learning by taking notes even when not required to so she can refer back to what she was taught. London consistently produces her best work and is in a in is a role model for her peers. I'm const I'm constantly impressed with the way she approaches new challenges in the class and I am honored to nominate her for this award. [applause] >> [applause] >> And the Farmington staff member is Crystal Lee. [applause] All right. Uh Miss Lee is a truly outstanding educator who makes a difference every
single day. As a wonderful math teacher, she brings energy, creativity, and clarity to every lesson, helping students build confidence and a love for learning. Her ability to make challenging concepts accessible and engaging is a gift to our students. Beyond the classroom, she plays an important role, an important leadership role in the school community. She oversees the school safety patrol, guiding our students, student leaders with patience, and high expectations. Through this work, Miss Lee not only keeps our school safe, but also teaches responsibility, teamwork, and pride in serving others. As a mentor, Miss Lee always is always willing to support colleagues and students alike, offering guidance, encouragement, and listening in a listening ear. Her positivity and professionalism sets a shining example for all of us. Thank you, Crystal Lee, for your dedication, leadership, and heart. You
make our school a better place every day. [applause] All right. Tonight is my privilege to do the awards for the middle school. Uh the student tonight is Mason Stzoski. [applause] Mason was nominated by his teacher Patty Sankina and she has to say Mason is a positive and helpful student who comes to class ready to learn. He is kind to his classmates and works hard academically as demonstrated by his perfect score on his latest math test. We appreciate Mason's contributions to our classroom and school community and are excited to see his continued growth. [applause] All right. And the staff member is Carrie Watkins. [applause] Here you are. Congratulations. Carrie was nominated by Lindseay Alfred, a parent and part of the middle school admin team. Um, she says, "I would like to recognize Miss Watkins for the
incredible impact she has had on my daughter. This is my daughter's first foreign language class, and she's absolutely loves learning Japanese because of her. She often tells me how cheerful Miss Watkins is and how she's always in such a good mood, setting a positive tone for her entire day. Miss Watkins goes above and beyond, offering to stay after school to help my daughter prepare for assessments and sending personal emails and postcards to share updates, encouragement. You can tell she truly loves what she does and cares deeply about her students. She brings so much confidence and positivity to her classroom and deserves to be recognized. We are so fortunate to have Miss Watkins energy, enthusiasm, and passion for teaching students and supporting the Garden City Middle School community. Congratulations. Thank [applause] you. Tonight I have the
shining star student for Garden City High School is Olivia Clank. [applause] Olivia was nominated by the high school staff. Olivia has shown amazing personal growth and is a great advocate for the GCHS student body. Olivia is passionate about supporting her classmates and she took the initiative on her own to approach the school about giving a speech during suicide prevention month. Olivia's heartfelt talk to the entire student body during intervention time was entirely her own idea. Olivia reminded fellow students that they are not alone. Olivia also told her classmates about the helpful resources that are available. Students and staff alike praised Olivia for her advocacy, openness, and courage to address the student body on such an important subject. Olivia's leadership, initiative, and bravery and talking about important mental health issues in our school is the reason
she is the shining star this month at the high school. By finding her voice and using it to help others, she has shown how one student can make a real difference in the lives of others. [applause] um going above and beyond staff member for the high school's Lauren Bonafiglio. [applause] >> Lauren was nominated by a fellow teacher, Chris Rochow. Miss Bonafiglio's definition of a Swiss Army knife teacher. The incredible heart, dedication, and knowledge she brings to the classroom every single day is so enormous that anyone who steps into her classroom immediately feels safe and ready to learn. This bonafiglio sees each student as an individual, makes them feel valued, supported, and capable of achieving more than they thought possible. The compassion, patience, and encouragement she shows not only helps students grow academically, but also gives
them confidence and hope that carries beyond the classroom. Speaking of beyond the classroom, Miss Bonafiglio is so dedicated to each senior class. She spends much of her free time making sure the students last year of their high school career is the best it can be. It's clear that teaching is much more than a job for Mrs. Bonafiglio. It's a calling and the positive impact she has on students lives is immeasurable. Just seeing Mrs. Bonafiglio in her element makes it clear she has found exactly where she needs to be. I am so proud just to have the chance to nominate Mrs. Bonafiglio and even more proud to call her a colleague. [applause] All right. And finally, I have Cambridge High School tonight. Uh, the shining star student is Keon Stringer. Is Kon here? [applause] All right,
let's talk about Keon. Keon has been a student at Cambridge since January 2025. Since he arrived here, he has shown himself to be a kind and respectful person. Each of his teachers have stated that when he is in the classroom, they know that there will be a good participation and that in the current year, it appears he is working harder than ever before. At the rate he is working this year, Keon should be on track to graduate in June. Kean has stated that after graduation, he is planning on going into either construction or the welding trades. The staff at Cambridge High School are proud of Keon and the strides he is making within our program. [applause] And the uh staff member that's going above and beyond is Gary Gayen. Gary here. [applause] All right. Well,
Gary has worked at Cambridge for 20 years as a classroom teacher and for several years assisting with the FastTrack program. At the beginning of the school year, I asked Gary if he would lead FastTrack. At the same time, we were moving to a new online platform, which Gary was going to need to learn. Since the beginning of the school year, Gary has truly stepped into his leadership role, not just in making sure that the FastTrack program is running smoothly, but in learning the new platform and becoming a go-to for staff with questions about it. Furthermore, he has mentioned one of our staff me staff who was moved who was moved into the role to ensure that the program was run smoothly at all times. It's great to see a person who has worked in the
same building for 20 years truly step up in the way that Gary has done. It is a credit to his caring for Cambridge students and Cambridge as a whole that he has done so which makes all of us luckier to have him on staff. Congratulations. [applause] Can we get one more collective round of applause for our award winners tonight? [applause] And I just I just want to personally thank uh everybody who took the time, the thoughtful time uh to acknowledge our our well-deserving students and our dedicated staff members. So it goes a long way when you take that time and you you make that nomination. So just know that it's much appreciated. Uh thank you. >> Item nine, presentation. Uh a Douglas, Mr. Bone worker. >> I have a team of wonderful teachers coming with
me and you turn it on there. So we are going to present some data to you and then some fun. So, we have kind of school improvement work and PBIS. And I cannot tell you how like enough how amazing these teachers are. Um, one of the best things Garden City ever did was hire a reading coach for our district and Shannon and and Julie who's not here, but amazing. And then, um, bringing Megan in for math. I mean, phenomenal. So [applause] yeah, the work they do for the elementary schools is like more work than I you can even imagine and behind the scenes. But um you'll see here they put together all this data and um really have been a part of the interventions that we're doing in math and reading and a lot of
the programming um working with teachers behind the scenes, training teachers, um showing modeling for teachers in the classrooms, helping make sure they have the right resources, you name it. So we'll start with Shannon and Megan. >> Thank you. >> Good evening everyone. Thank you for being here tonight. And once again, go Lions. We came off of a win this weekend instead of a loss like last time we were together. So, rah rah. Um, like Jim said, I am the reading coach. Um, I will coach second and third grade, but I do have the pleasure tonight of talking about Douglas a little bit. I'm going to Can you all see that? Well, okay. Awesome. Um, a little bit about Douglas. We have 216 third grade students, 202th grade students. We have an awesome principal. We have
seven third grade teachers, seven fourth grade teachers, three amazing title teachers. Um, two are reading and one is math. Um, we have four incredible tutors, two awesome coaches, and um, six special education teachers and two social workers. Um, like I shared with you all last month, we did um adopt our benchmark curriculum last year. We're seeing some really amazing gains. Um, obviously it gets a little bit more rigorous. Um, as we move into third grade, we're now reading reading to learn as opposed to learning to read like we are um at Memorial. Um, but we still have our integrated ELA skills, explicit instruction across all areas. We have knowledge and vocabulary building which is more emphasized here in the upper grade levels. Still building on those foundational skills and still like was addressed earlier, we're
working really intentionally with skills-based small groupoup instruction. Here are some pictures of our awesome students. Um, one of the greatest things about Benchmark is it really does a good job of helping the students learn how to collaborate with each other. during COVID, they completely lost that skill and we're really having to teach them how to talk to each other, how to have discussions, how to come to conclusions, how to respectfully agree and disagree. And um so it's awesome to see our students working together using this benchmark curriculum. And here's a couple work samples and some more pictures of the students working together in class. And now I'm going to pass it off to math and I'll be back in a minute. Um, as we were saying last time, we have everyday math for K through
five. So at Douglas, they're working on real world problems, focusing on multi multiple strategies and using those games to build their fluency. Um, I'm gonna actually go to the next slide and come back. Um, here is some everyday math stuff in action. Um, we have part number sense routines were added on to everyday math. It's not part of everyday math, but it's important that they're getting those number sense routines every day. Teacher led small groups, partner work, um, talking about their thought communication, working in groups, playing playing games, constructing their mathematics using technology. We have tutors, the manipulatives, and we have title. All right. So, um, one thing that Douglas is doing for every other Friday, they're doing intervention Fridays, they're doing power hour math, and students are grouped together based on their RIT scores
and algebraic thinking because that's one of the areas that they need to focus on. And they're grouped on that where they're getting specific targeted lessons based on those that rit score. You saw a slide that was very similar to this at Memorial. I wanted to highlight these as well. Um just knowing noting the growth that we saw in the spring last year. We wanted to just bring it to your attention here at Douglas as well. Using our two curriculums, we've been able to see some really great gains in all areas of math and reading. You can see more than 50% of our students in all areas are achieving above the expected benchmark for both math and reading. So, we're in great shape and um doing some really great things here. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you.
>> [applause] >> Um, more specifically, we can see here, I wanted to draw your attention to um, last year when students came in um, to third grade, we had the majority or sorry, they were entering at the 44th percentile in reading. This year, thanks to our amazing second grade team, go Memorial, [applause] we have um, students entering at the 53rd percentile. So huge growth, benchmarks doing amazing things and we're going to um see the same things as we continue on and even better. Um just digging a little bit deeper looking at our third grade. Um these are the uh data sets that we look at when we're determining what to focus on for our school improvement goal. So you can see the areas of strength and weakness here. Um, we're still building on those foundational
skills, but our focus is informational text, building the vocabulary, learning thoseformational um, texts more deeply. And in fourth grade, um, you can see that we are also working withformational text as our weakest area. So, still building on those things. Those are the things that we're intentionally working on in small group instruction. Um, so making sure that we're keeping that as our main focus. And back to Megan. >> Currently, third graders are already starting at the 51st percentile and fourth grade at the 46. This is the average range for NWA. Digging a little deeper, the focus area for third grade is um algebraic thinking. That's the area that they're focused on this year. where their strength is is geometry. Fourth grade they are their focus area is geometry and and algebraic thinking. They're focusing on both
of those and their area that they're is their strength is numbers and operations. Mr. B, >> thank you. All right. And you can see well first of all I don't know if you see any future administrators over here but I do so um that's just my two cents there but all of this the data that they presented our school improvement team works we meet at least once a month but then we're talking regularly and I mean buzzing into my class or my office buzzing into the classrooms talking in the hallways having conversations with each other at lunch, but um really looking at the data and deciding on these interventions as a whole team. And so um and kudos to the district and the direction the district has gone with adopting that great math curriculum, the
great reading curriculum, um hiring these coaches and wonderful staff. So I am just I can't even nothing I do compares to what you know the whole team has done. And so, thank you. Um, I have Alicia Stander. She is our PBIS coach, um, young teacher who is already becoming a leader. So, um, really proud of her and the growth she's had. And so, she's going to help me present, um, our PBIS. We're going to show you what one of our assemblies looks like in a quick snapshot, but the assemblies are about 45 minutes long typically and they have evolved over the last few years from our team just what else can we do? What else can we do? How can we recognize kids in another way and teach kids in a positive way to behave?
and we're the punishment side of it you won't even see here because this is what we want to do to get their behavior to improve and so um you'll see from um involving parents to um everything that we do in these assemblies. So I'll let Alicia talk about it. >> All right. Thank you, Mr. V. Um so we're going to go through this assembly. Um normally this is ran by Mr. B and somebody manning the computer. Um, but we start off by talking about what we were working on that month. So, last month for October, we were working on safety. We talk about um what it looks like and how they could earn trade tickets. Um, and I'll talk a little bit more about those in just a second. So, then we list off a
couple examples. We get these from teachers, the actual things that they're seeing in their classroom. Um, and we talk about those in front of the kids, right? So, they can see what they're doing well. And then we go in and we talk about the students who got the student of the month. Right? We have seven in each class or sorry, one in each class. We have seven fourth grade, seven third grade. Um, and then we play games because they're nine, right? And it's fun to get them up and moving around. And we have our student of the months do the games first and then we pull those trait tickets that I was talking about. So all month every staff member has had those tickets in their pocket and when they see a kid being safe
they give it to them. And so then we have a big bucket of it and we pull out names as well. So not just our student of the month everybody. And this um this time we played head, shoulders, knees and toes which was pretty comical honestly. I wish we had a video of that but we do not. Um and then we uh so this we do like a win like a wheel so they to draw their names. Um, and then we take a moment to honor those students who had their student of the month. And they have a little paragraph and um, instead of reading you those, we wanted to show you a quick video of one of our students getting it. So, let me just pull this up real quick. Sorry good choices. She
walks instead of running, keeps her hands to herself, and uses m the right way. She listens to her teachers directions and helps remind her classmates to stay safe, too. By being carefully responsible, she helps make the classroom a happy and safe place for everyone to learn. Way to go, >> thank you for uh holding with me. I I don't know why I wouldn't want to play on the full screen. Um, so we go through all of those students and we make sure that they feel good about how they're doing, right? And it also allows all of those other students to see how they can get up there, right? How they can become, you know, the student standing up. And we also recognize a student every month or in each grade as the most improved student.
So maybe they were struggling at the beginning of the year, but they're moving they're moving towards a better behavior. And so we honor them as well. Um, and one of our student of the months in each grade and the most improved gets a meal with uh Mr. and a $25 gift card of their choice. So he does offer box I've heard. Um so I mean it kind of sounds cool. Um [laughter] [clears throat] >> I mean McDonald's is good, right? So um and then this is the wheel that we would rotate for those kids, our student of the months to get which one gets it. um and we talk about our um treat that we did. So every month instead of just picking one kid from a class, we have our student of the month
and then we have four what we call our honorable mentions. And those four students join that student of the month and they go and do a treat. And so in October they did apple nachos which were really good. I was watching them and I was like wish I was in there with you guys. Um >> these are some more photos. >> So that program is sorry that program is paired with our food service. Um and so we have the chef come and so we kind of tied that into our PBIS. So we appreciate their support as well. >> Thank you. Um and then so this most recent month we made graveyard mud cups which also sounded really good. It is not dirt. One of my kids tried to trick me with it and I I
knew better. [snorts] Um, here's some there's some more photos of them creating and then we talk about what the criteria is for the next month. So, they know how to get up there, right? So, our next month is about responsibility and we talk about that and then the classroom teachers go back and they talk about it and we make a big deal when those kids get the trait tickets. Thank you so much for turning in your homework today. That's being very responsible. or you know, um, thank you for picking up that piece of paper off the ground. That way they can see it and they know how to be the friend up in the front, right? Or to be one of those four honorable mentions because I have a lot of great kids, not just
one a month, right? We talk about what it looks like and then we talk about the trait tickets, too. So, this is what um our trade tickets look like normally and then we do more. So, those trait tickets are in the bowl again, right? We have a lot more and we draw a bunch. Okay. And about 10 of them get to pick a prize. Um, so we have things like lunch buddy. So if they're sitting at because we normally sit by class, they can go sit next to their friend, stocking the school store, selling ice cream, eating lunch with their favorite teacher, eating lunch on the stage with a friend with two friends, working on the recycling team, or being Mrs. Stapleton's assistant, which I heard is the favorite. Um, and then we just we
um wrap it up that way. But it was always a lot of fun. I really do enjoy especially with the kids who watch their peers and the way they cheer each other on. It honestly, you know, melts your heart because it's adorable, right? Because they're just really being wonderful with their classmates. So, thank you [applause] Thank you. >> Um, excuse me, Mr. B. I would like to nominate myself for most improved board member. >> Mr. B, nice job. And I really want to thank you for having uh your staff here to present. So, thank you for following the MTSS process. Kudos. And I real quick um your could you thank your staff for me? PBIS is so important and it sounds to me like they've embraced it and just the focus on the positives in a world where everybody likes to focus on the negatives. It's it's life-changing and it's incredible and I love that your staff is just focusing on that and embraced it and it's making a difference. So kudos to all of you. Thank you. >> Okay. Okay. Uh dates for this event are June 1st through June 3 for the first group and

Uh board members, I do want to share and I'll update the community. Uh first of all, thank you to everybody across the district across the school community who's been involved with the strategic plan process whether through uh participating in one of the 500 plus surveys uh bringing information to the
input sessions. really appreciate those folks who are there for the retreat day, the eight hour retreat day. Uh we've had a great representation in the community for that, including teachers, parents, board members, city council members, police, fire, library, and of course administration. And then most recently, this past Saturday, we had the implementation planning day, uh facilitated by Dr. Julie Kaminsky with MASB. Uh and we're in really good shape. We made final sort of adjustments and tweaks uh to our belief statements and to the district's mission and vision. And we also fleshed out goals based on input received through those input and survey sessions. So, uh Julie will be providing us with a comprehensive document. She'll be presenting to the board on our last calendar board meeting uh for this year uh on December 8th, 2025.
And hopefully once the board uh sees that document, we can approve the new strategic plan. So we are that the heavy lift overall is finished and we'll we'll wait from the document from MASP and then we'll have a board presentation from Julie um on December 8th. So please stand by for that.
