a golden rod in the minutes that's okay and it's in the minutes because the only reason why it's in there why there was a change there was a change in date um that it said the next regular scheduled board meeting and it had a date that wasn't today so it has that in there so that's the only change I was going to mention that one when that came up for approval but thank you all right good all right uh next item Middle School presentation yes very excited to have some of our wonderful middle schoolers here and uh I'll let you guys take it away all right [Music] I'm Lisa fersi I'm one of the B nice liaison at the middle school and I'm an kak and I've been a liaison for be nice for we
just talking I think 10 years so um and this is a small portion of our be nice committee this year we actually have about 40 kids who joined nice and we meet um twice a month in the morning before school starts some days we have to add lunches and after school project time or other mornings before school to get all our fun activities done so we will let this group share with you what we do so what does theit committee do my name is Ariana and my name is Lily we were given a large wall to post our bulletin boards on the wall for the whole school to see we create them to represent and tell people about different letters of the be nice acronym the whole be nice Committee participates in creating these bulletins
they show plenty of creativity and also go hand inand with the challenges we give the rest of the school these are only some of the examples of Bolton boards we've made in the past my name is Chloe and my name is Sophie we love doing schoolwide projects some past schoolwide projects are when we put things by ourselves on snowflakes that show that we are unique and decorating masses show who we are and about our lives and the mass another has been us putting magnets on random lockers and then when people find them they receive a bookmark in return and we have done many more we hope the message people get from schoolwide projects is that we can make the world a much better place if we just be nice these are only a few examples
of some schoolwide projects my name is Rachel My Name Is Molina and one challenge be nice does is the be nice spring break challenge where we challenge students to send a picture of themselves ring your be nice shirts while on vacation another challenge be nice does is acts of kindness day where we hand out cards with an act of kindness that challenges students to be kind another challenge our committee does is we challenge students to be involved with our sales we do we mostly do t-shirt sales but we also sell different accessories we also challenge students to wear be nice shirts on Thursdays to spread awareness within our school and sometimes we sell suckers to motivate students to buy one for someone else to spread kindness all of these challenges relate to the fun and
kindness we do for our school this truly can make a good impact on us and others good evening everyone my name is saki San Santos and I'm an eighth grader in the B nice committee at Granville Middle School the B nice committee produces videos and announcements to share with the school our goal is to promote the principles of kindness and empowerment these videos encourage students to notice invite Challenge and Empower one another by spreading positive messages for instance at the beginning of the school year we created a video titled stop the stigma we shared with the school to explain what stigma is and why it's important to support each other so shaming one another for our struggles this message is particularly relevant to September being Suicide Prevention month as we always try to connect our
videos to current events to better connect our students we'll now show you said video hello Granville Middle School I am Mrs kak and I'm Mrs figurki the be nice committee would like you to know that September is suicide prevention month but every month is a great time to stop the stigma surrounding mental health stigma is when people have a negative or discriminatory attitude about those with mental health issues in reality mental health affects all of us so what is mental health it's not a reason to bully or harass someone it's nothing to be ashamed of you should not COPE in a destructive way it doesn't Define you don't be ashamed or hide your feelings it can make you feel broken and [Music] sad it can be difficult it's okay to be angry just don't take
it out on others it's important and fragile it shouldn't be underestimated it shouldn't bring you down it's okay to take a mental health day it's how we think feel and act it's empowering yet shaped per person it can bring people together it allows you to be yourself allows for reflection no it's okay to be scared to express it no you're not alone it can change daily but everyone has it this should be the number one priority for yourself know that there is always help and there is always hope the be nice committee wants you to notice invite challenge EMP power our goal is to be aware of our own mental health and mental health of those around us let's stop the stigma and be nice our announcements encourage students to join in spread the be
nice message as shown below we also created a video last year spreading messages of empowerment to promote a sense of belonging in our community and to help students be comfortable in their IND individuality and uniqueness May's mental health aware this month Empower yourself and others with the knowledge that you can have an effect on how a person thinks acts and feels be empowered with the knowledge that are resources to help and there is always hope Empower yourself and others to take control of your life my here with Mr zener how do you encourage people to make Positive Choices you encourage people to make Positive Choices by being the example you want to set and then uh bringing them along with you Empower yourself and others to make Positive Choices who am I hear with M
what do you do to manage a healthy mindset take a break from screen time Empower yourself and others to take notice of the changes in people who am I here with Miss Darton the D students and athletic director what do you do for someone who has made significant changes that affect their mental health well as far as um as long as it's a positive change some things I like to do is just encourage them with little quotes that just pop up in my head and um try to get them to understand that this is going to be good for them in the long run and um even gone as far as giving kids like poits to make like little affirmations that they can put up around them um to just encourage them when they feel
down Empower yourself and others to make room for everyone who am I here with Kellen and Kellen what ways can you invite others to join in you can invite them to your table at lunchtime you can play basketball with them in the gym in the mornings or you can just like invite them to like whatever sports that you play Empower yourself and others to be friendly to each other in what ways do you support friendliness I try to encourage each other other people and with my athletes and students to try to help them to find the positive and other situation um and I personally love to wear a good t-shirt and Empower yourself and others to cheer for everyone how do you show support for your peers I show support for my peers by helping
them learn the material and uh encouraging them dur Empower yourself and others to find empathy Empower each other to shine show your empowerment and where be nice sure every Thursday May to show a healthy mental health for all of [Applause] us my name's Ariana and in the mornings we often greet people at the doors with Smarties or bookmarks or other positive affirmations I'm a part of the V nice committee because I want people to feel safe and comfortable at school I also love finding ways to help others and want to help people with mental health issues and help them show them and help show them what good mental health looks like I have seen firsthand how mental health can affect people I'm a part of the be nice acity because I like to help people
know that they are not alone to teach them what good mental health is I know someone that went through mental health and hurt themselves because she was injured could not play a sport so I want to help people not do that I'm a part of the be nice committee because I have witnessed firsthand the effects of poor mental health I want to teach people how to better support and give help to those who need it I'm a part of the be nice committee because I wanted to join a club this year that I thought would be engaging to the whole school and seemed like a fun opportunity I also see people struggling with mental health and I thought that it'd be nice to show people that they don't go through that alone I'm a part
of the be ni committee because I want to have more opportunities to help others I'm a part of the be nice committee because I believe kindness and mental health need to be noticed I also want to keep on helping others and continue to put smiles on people's faces I a part of the be ni committee because I feel it is important for us as middle schoolers to understand what mental health truly is I'm a member of the be nice committee because I believe a little more kindness can make the world a better place promoting kindness early in life can help Foster Kinder individuals and combat the stigma surrounding various issues especially mental health matters thank you nice job guys job you guys have any questions the group like they have something coming up all right
I don't have a question just a comment in that my position U my work position I facilitate the suicide prevention Coalition of Kent County and um we use the be nice model as something that is simple and easy to follow and can save a life and so I love what you all have done to promote it within your school the middle school and hopefully two thank hope you'll continue it into high school you know they've got a club there too yeah absolutely encourage to join school as well and it's going to be in colleges and I want to thank you teachers as well thank you so much for the support thank you so much for everything you guys did I mean anytime you can you know put Evan Hansen into a presid great job there
I love it so perfect um and ladies I I love hearing about your why too you know why you're involved in health you took care of her I think that's great and you know understanding that you know mental health isn't just for one group of students right it's for the athletes as one uh uh one of them mentioned right it's for uh um you know the students that may be suffering you know at home or for some other issue right everybody goes through a mental health uh um not say crisis but issues at some point in their life it just happens so it's great to hear your why understanding of that thank you well thanks for having us much and I have one other thing to mention you guys don't know but since you're middle
schoolers and Middle School teachers and I know Mr C's in the background uh we received the 2024 building award for Granville Middle School and this is given by uh the American Institute of architecture and I believe there's only four buildings in in the I think the ire country that uh received such an award so so we want an award all the time dedication hard work that everyone put in for the the design of that building and that was everyone that was uh students it was teachers uh it was uh a v community members a variety of people so I just want to commend you or congratulate you on that as well and Mr C I'm going to give this to you uh and you take it back to the middle school and display it proudly
wow that is really awesome great [Music] job all right all right on to the next item consent action agenda um as Roger mentioned there's a golden rod in there for the change of date for the next board meeting at the end of the meeting minutes or meeting minutes can I get a motion support all those in favor yes yes opposed motion passes regular action agenda 4 a is recommended the Board of Education approve the insulin litigation resolution to join a nationwide lawsuit against various insulin manufacturers Pharmacy benefit managers and other defendants accused of artificially inflating insulin prices can I get a motion so moved support support when you read through your board packet you have some information here that kind of encapsulates uh what's going on with this but Heather's here as well have there
anything you want to add um yes sorry I'm just pulling this back up for some reason it doesn't like it right now um got a ro there well I have a printed copy so um I think one of the most important um pieces of this is that um we are are asked to to join this because we are part of a a self-insured um pool and one of the reasons um for local districts who are a part of any insurance pool to join is in case the pool gets dismissed then um our entity is still would still be um be able to partake if if there um if if the outcome is what we think it will potentially be so um how this would be distributed back um would be obviously on a percentage basis
um but it would essentially be to um paid back through reduction in premium prices so going forward um that's where um because of the inflated pricing and what not that had an impact on premiums for um the insurance carriers and the the pools so I know it was rather lengthy um makes sense p a question yeah so when it comes to the fee structure on this because it is a class action suit the amount that's going to come back to all the litigant you know isn't going to be great but tell me if I'm reading this correctly so in the background of the motion where we're looking at the the recovery fees France gets 30% thrun gets 30% of that but then in the actual contract it says that thr gets 35% of that so
do they get 30 they get the 30% then they get to keep 35% of the 30% oh the 40% uh page 14 of that document where it says um 16 on the six of the referral fee so it's got a reasonable fee right so the attorney and client agree that the fee shall not exceed 30% um and if the referral like tr's getting a higher fee they're getting the 35 because they're referring clients is my understanding so instead of the 30% that's listed in the background they're getting 35% yeah I'm sorry if there was a typle there on that the resolution is what it says TR and will will receive a portion of that 30% if there is a recovery which is the whole point of this class action right I mean no one's going
to receive anything unless there's a there is a u settlement in favor of the Lans correct the claimant right I mean the time out of pocket for this district is this meeting right now and me writing up the agenda the action item understand I just want to you know when it gets to a dollar and then you break the dollar down and then it I don't know what the amount is going to be but it's a in this you know from my perspective it's probably last when you get into a class action lawsuit it's typically you're talking Pennies on the dollar by the time it's done but I understand the power of wanting to do it so just wanted to state that is it not that we're getting a bunch of money from it but
we're supporting thr yeah well we're supporting we're supporting the insurance pool I me represent ultimately yeah thank you well and I think the biggest important part is insulin prices are ridiculous right um Medicare Medicaid has the $30 Max rate cap but um everybody else pays a lot and especially depending on your insurance pool so I had asked this question earlier in an email and it does sound like then that what we're hoping is that then that translates into lower Premium cost overall and then that means that our staff and our ad whoever is taking part in our pool can have a much more reasonable cost correct we need so when you look at when you're looking at the number of people that have diabetes in this country that need it is growing every day um
there's a market that H possibly is artificially inflated do you know of any other uh School boards that have joined up through pool yes I know um uh Wyoming Kentwood uh Forest Hills will be bringing it to their board um Byron will be bringing it to their board I'm trying to like there was a there was a list of people who said in North viw they brought it to their board uh Rockford I believe passed theirs already um they Hudsonville J I don't know about that I I just was in with like the the Kent County side of things um I could find that out and let you know um is there any reason not to approve this or not to join this lawsuit I don't believe there is no so it's only upside for
us and there's no risk if it doesn't because there there's no risk there's no fee if there's no recovery all right any other discussion all right all those in favor yes yes opposed motion passes 4 B the trun policy or board policy approval it is recommended that the Board of Education approve thrun board policy packet as presented and reviewed uh during uh the past few board meetings upon adoption these policies will take place uh take the place of Neola policies used to this point as the primary policies of branville public schools can I get a motion so moved support all right discussion I see we have a couple of items here yeah um so just to to backtrack again so we went over the the um trun board policies um started with I believe the
0261000s 2000s 3000s and the next meeting meeting did the uh fours and the fives um and you know you had this to review we asked you know any questions bring to him you did have during the discussion time um a few changes that you recommended and so has given you copies of those I'll turn it over to him see if he has anything he wants to add yeah no that was a piece that I was going to share the the three single copies and I showed those to you via email as well that you have on your desk the one um on policy what 1300 I think um has the the language that it would that the the board will use two readings or may use two readings that was something that that was asked
about and was is answered and then in the 4000s we were talking about marijuana and wondering can we add THC as a part of that so I had uh added that language in there as well and that's why you have those those two extra copies um anywhere where it says marijuana and those 4000s I just added THC like as a backslash so and the um the attorney on the um 1301 felt that it was important that the word was May adopt or amend after two readings in the off chance that we may need to have an emergency adoption of any sort of policy so that you can do a single reading but it establishes that uh two readings is kind of the norm no it reads well yep thanks J yep any well it's me
again so I would like to make a motion to amend this motion um by adding the words excluding policy 3115 a through f after the word meetings so I need a second for that I'll I'll second that let's discuss it we already have a motion a motion right now so no you can amend during a motion okay according to Robert's Rules I have my book that I've had for the last 21 years if anybody wants to read it so why am I doing that so we also have to vote on the amendment before we vote on the motion so my justification for this is overall I think thr's done a good job John so again you and Roger thanks for all the work you did on that but I cannot in all due [Music] conscience
vote to approve 3115 even though the board already uh approved in August I'm not going to include it in my mind I'm a yes for the amendment to my amendment to exclude this so that we're looking at every other policy but if the amendment shouldn't fail in the vote then I'm a no in the original motion because I cannot [Music] support 3115 in its current state what is 3115 Title Nine okay which we already voted on and approved as he mentioned and we reaffirmed not changing at last meeting is it possible to table 3115 it's already been approved already approved so your amendment is to pass everything but that um time L correct okay I think this is redundant to last meeting's conversation where the board already made a decision to keep things as is
and allow the courts to figure things out we have policies in place Roger made it really clear that we have risks involved with changing that policy that we're not willing to put our students into that place that we also have legal routes to honor the spaces where the lawsuits exist and fall back on Old policy and the board has already voted on that so that's my opinion about it so let me explain myself again you don't need to I understood it just fine I really didn't the way you try to explain it to the board is counter to what I I'm just stating my opinion about it I understand what you're saying completely I just don't agree with it yeah I don't think we need to revote Title 9 I'm not saying that so you're
saying to what I'm you're saying to pass everything but so that's not passing that title 9 right the title 9 was approved August 5th so why are we this letting it I will here's the thing I am not going to approve a blanket policy which includes 3115 which would reverse my vote in both August and at the last meeting you can vote no on the policies we can either vote the amendment down and I vote no on this motion or we allow for the exclusion of 3115 a through F okay thank you for explaining all that that's where Kim did not restate as I have told you I understand your reasoning I understood what you understood you didn't explain it to the board correctly in my op did any other discussion I i' like to
say that I did go to Lancing for the legal meetings on October 24th and if anyone would like to sit down with me um I have made offers to several different entities that I will sit down I will go through every single law I will say that we have been doing amazing amazingly well for the last 15 years in this district and I absolutely am not worried about passing the title n language within tr's work I'm not worried about it I think that our district has done an amazing job and I think that we will go forward doing an amazing job and I can sit down with anyone who is interested in sitting down with me and I can go over every single thing I can go over the language I can talk about how
it's not just protections for lgbtq kids but it's also lgbtq staff but it's also non-lgbtq kids it also ends up um covering things about social media it ends up talking about protections over how we deal with verbal versus written there are a lot of amazing additions in this Title Nine that are protecting every single kid in this District so Bob can I can I try to encapsulate what you said you can I think I understand what you said you're just saying you don't want to you know Title Nine the trune policy of Title 9 we already passed back in August correct what you are asking you do not want to vote with that in this packet so you want to make note that it excludes that it's already been passed correct there was a motion
to resend that failed so it is already in place correct corre you're just saying the sh policies minus that you will consider but you don't want to consider that title 9 policy again it's already been approved D you don't want that as part of this entire correct okay so why is it twice I get because it's part of the whole policy package well it's in here because it is part of the whole trun policy package we don't need to approve that again because it's already approved correct so it is already there no matter what happens with your vote tonight is already there so so with that motion it stays and yes it becomes part of the overall policies we have but it also approves all the other policies that we haven't approved yet um along
with that is that what you're saying perfect I understand so 3115 encapsulates more than just Title 9 yeah so but it's anti harassment non retaliation but I guess that's where my question is right if we're just talking Title 9 that's just Title 9 this encompasses ABCD e FG and Title 9 so we're kind of throwing the baby out of the B we've already approved that though I I think the way you summarized it is accurate uh 3115 has been approved and there was the vote last time to resend that was shot down so it's still part of policy the way that Bob worded his Amendment was I don't need to vote on that policy and if you ask me to vote on that policy as a part of the group it it changes the way
that I voted on that policy to begin with it's on record he becomes a yes vote for 3115 by leaving it as a part of the group so the way he worded it is let's consider all the policies outside of 3115 because we already voted on that and we already did the res the resending piece and it was nullified so it doesn't take away the fact that 3115 is still in place the only a motion to vote from separately they have to be voted separately what hold on one second yeah if memory serves me correctly we did not have a number on this in August we just approved the policy correct we got the number when you gave us yeah I don't remember if the number was a part of the the original documents it
may not have been I it's I'm just stating a question that came up sure any discussion on the motion to the pardon to my question to you would you feel more comfortable if it was two votes well there are two votes there's a vote on my Amendment and then there's a vote on I meant for your amendment to be amended so that there's a vote on this policy separately within this packet and this entire without that so that you can express your views about it without having to suly the whole thing but the people who are good with things moving forward can also Express their views to that as well it's already been approved yeah so you're double approving it well I was just talking about under the new packet like you said the only
thing happened is a number the policy the number is IM material it's how they're managing the index of it John did I state that correctly yeah okay okay so my Amendment so I have a motion and it's seconded to amend removing 3115 from this motion okay we need to have a vote on that and then we can have a vote on the motion so motion the motion on the table is to remove 3115 from through and board policy from the vote of the vote okay so the motion to remove it from consideration of this from the board policy V it's already in place there's no it's removing it from this packet but it's not removing it it's already in place so a yes vote would be to remove it a no vote would be stays
as is correct all right correct let's do a roll call okay Wonder J yes Klein no stus yes Gardine no Palmer yes danan not here hbor no it's tied pass it doesn't pass it doesn't have majority all right motion fails we're on to further discussion no now you're on to your original origal for the discussion of the through Bo policy packet as a whole all right questions [Music] comments all right roll okay Palmer yes Gardine yes stus no wonder Jim no Klein yes iore yes pass all right on to the public comment portion of the meeting as a reminder you have five minutes to speak U Miss Klein will keep time and give you a one minute warning up first we have Rachel ni and on Deck we have Adam Bush hello Granville Board of
Education my name is Rachel niata and I am a teacher here in the district as well as a graduate of Granville Public Schools I want to take the time to express my gratitude to the four board members who voted in support of our students by upholding federal law regarding Title 9 at the last meeting your commitment to ensuring a safe and Equitable learning environment for all students is commendable along with the financial allocations of our district by standing firm in support of federal law you have reinforced our Collective responsibility to create a school Community where every student feels valued and respected in my experience as a choir director I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact of your policies my students are thriving in an environment that nurtures creativity and individuality they are learning not just
to make music but to take ownership of their education engage with one another and support their peers your efforts to provide resources and programs that cater to diverse learning styles allow them to flourish what impresses me most is how my choir students are able to focus on their their passion for music unimpeded by The Noise around them they are empowered to express themselves collaborate and create beautiful harmonies together it is heartwarming to see how the board's protective measures allow my students to concentrate on what truly matters their growth their art and their Community I urge the three school board members who voted against the federal law regarding Title 9 to reconsider their stance as supporting this law is crucial for insurance equal opportunities and protection for all students embracing Title 9 not only aligns with
our commitment to fairness and inclusivity but strengthens the educational environment for everyone in our community to the four of you who voted to protect all students thank you for your dedication to creating an equitable and supportive academic atmosphere I look forward to witnessing the continued positive effects of your work for all of our students thank you again order please thank you up next Adam Bush on Deck Kaylee janson's since there is still so much confusion surrounding the recent Title 9 changes I'm going to rephrase and expand upon some of the questions I had at the last meeting and I'm specifically addressing Roger and the four board members who were so determined to adopt these new rules so that would be Kim Amy Barb and Jason I especially want to hear from you Jason since you
had the deciding vote deciding vote on whether or not to reconsider your original August 5 vote Roger I ask that you provide your response either after I'm finished speaking or the conclusion of public comments for the Ford board members I mentioned since you don't respond during public comments I'd like to invite each of you to stay after tonight's meeting to provide your answers and perhaps have some civil dialogue I also invite any other interested parties to stay after as well here are my questions this one's for Roger as I've stated before the new title 9 says that schools must allow students to use facilities consistent with their gender identity regardless of their biological sex and I've heard you say Roger that you've been working through these scenarios for over a decade that you are not
concerned about this area the new title 9 does not change what you do it does not negate the practices you have in place and you've gone on to say that whenever there is a request by the student you work out a plan and you stress you insist that your procedure will not change with the new title 9 rules yes I noticed that you chose your words very carefully and I believe that everything you said is probably true but it's what you didn't say that I feel is misleading misleading to the board and misleading to the public because the only reasons your plans have worked for over a decade is because up until now those plans were the only way as transgender student could use facilities not consistent with their birth gender it was a required
step for the student to make a request and then the administration would work with them to formulate a support plan you failed to mention however that transgender students won't need your plan anymore with the new title 9 they won't even need to ask permission just like you and I don't need to ask permission to use the men room yes you can still offer your plan yes students can still request one so everything you said is still technically true but none of it is required anymore under the new title 9 rules the new title 9 rules that you convinced our school board to adopt and contrary to what you have previously stated transgender students will absolutely be able to use any restroom any restroom or locker room they choose without warning already occupied or not because
that is what the new Title Nine allows that is what's different that's what you seem to be ignoring and that's why you need to stop supporting this dangerous agenda you and I clearly have different views regarding tile 9 but the devil's in the details and I feel you have left out some very important ones so can you please clarify for us how your support plans will still be viable once they become completely optional under the new title 9 rules now these questions are for Kim Amy Barb and Jason I don't know how many of you have children of your own but for these questions I want you to put your mom and dad hats on and imagine that you have daughters biological daughters in middle school and high school each of those daughters has a
trans female classmate so a biological boy identifying as a girl as parents to your daughters do you have any issues or concerns with them sharing restrooms lock rooms or showers with that trans female classmate why or why not let's take it a step further let's say they play middle school and high school sports and they both happen to have a trans female coach so that's a biological man identifying as a woman coaching let's say girls basketball or volleyball are you okay with that coach being in the locker room with your daughters after the game they're changing clothes taking showers pull frontal are you good with that why or why not the new title 9 rules will allow all those interactions with no restrictions if if a school does restrict that activity that would be considered
sex discrimination under the new title 9 rules the new title 9 rules that you four board members were determined to adopt as fellow parents I challenge you to put my mind at ease and convince me that there are zero concerns for our daughter's safety and wellbeing Jason I just saw one of your recent campaign videos where you said it was silly to think that you would support anything that would put your daughters at a disadvantage or In Harm's Way how in the world could you make that claim when that is exactly what the new title 9 does now my last comment is actually just just for Barb I don't mean the single you out Barb you seem like a nice person thank you but I have some concerns right before you voted at the last
meeting where you voted not to resend your original August 5 vote you asked John Pho if there was a simple description of the differences between the 2020 and the 2024 tile 9 rules it was quite troubling to me that you had already voted once and you were about to vote again on something you didn't fully understand Title 9 is a huge issue and the decisions that you and the board make regarding this will have a lasting impact on Grandville you need to understand this stuff inside and out all of you do that's all I got talk to you soon thank you thank you order please next up Kaylee janson's on Deck Julie Dole all right sorry I had to kind of edit this while I was sitting there um hi I'm Kayla Jansen my information's
on my card um I was going to ask when the new th policy was going to be available online but um yeah just get back to you and you know um a few reminders the First Circuit Court ruled in favor of Handover public schools and Handover versus mcra oh mcra versus Handover um this case should or may have been mentioned by thrun uh back in July um another note there are an estimated 300,000 transgender kids uh in the United States between the ages of 13 and 17 the odds of a trans girl stealing your child College opportunities are extremely low but also the odds of another child in sorry but the odds of my child or another child in our district killing themselves over p mongering and harassment are extremely high um I think we
