apologies we need to order um hi board here Steph is here gardening present Palmer here here all right please note is a courtesy to members of the audience about education to sign up your cell phone if you turned it on the one minute break you just had um the public will be able to speak during our public comment section we have one any others coming in one place all right can I get a motion to approve our agenda support all in favor yes great we're moving on to our reports agenda we'll start with our board members reports start with Joe uh I don't have much report I've been to a couple of middle school basketball scrimmages it's been a lot of fun to watch and some uh the tennis camps that are going on but

great just doing kids are great yeah coaches are great everyone's good summer time does wonderful friend uh not a whole lot either I think uh coach Tuscan or congratulate them I guess on the baseball team and winning District Championship backpack my son designed the t-shirt for them to get so get another t-shirt uh should be ready in a couple weeks and then uh my wife and I and Jen Brooker finished the dog card so that's getting printed right now so that'll be available around mid-july and it's an incredible support from the community again we have 30 businesses on the card which is the most we've ever had and uh so you know thank you to all the businesses around that are willing to do that I mean one big addition that people seem to be

happy with is cone World cone World buy one Sunday and get one free so that's uh really about as good as you can get a finance that's what I had to report that's great to hear it by the way true fact they put more candy in their flurries than anywhere Amy um obviously graduation I had a senior it was great um senior all night party was so wonderful I do um I love the program because it gets our kids together the night of graduation it keeps them together keeps them safe and we have a blast so it was great where'd they go this year um it's called hi wait what's it called it's in Okemos and I always forget holy cow it's yeah it was in Okemos on a school bus over Michigan Road and

but it has everything like bowling that's an ax throwing and go-kart racing and a rage room and it was so much fun yeah so that was really great it was great to see all the kids together I just I'm gonna miss this class of students I would like to say how great it's been to have Coach Miller as our new strength and conditioning coach he's doing so much to make sure our students aren't hurting themselves it's been interesting to watch our kids go and I'm like I just want to touch the weights and he's like I just want you to learn how and then we have Coach Atkins who's our new Cross Country Coach and he is just the nicest human on the face of the planet he's been super and he also took the

first two weeks to show them how to run and then they finally had a five mile run yesterday and so that's been great um High School hockey's going strong and that's crazy actually they're on pond hockey right now which is great it was super fun to watch and um yeah that's it lots of sports going on over the summer these kids do not rest at the end they'll be marching band and these these students are hard-working amazing and are coaches and staff are just so such a gift such a huge gift no report thank you Jason um yeah uh yeah you said graduation was awesome a lot of uh parties and so forth going on there so that has been fun um you know obviously you know JD tennis and so forth have started so

that's going already um got the chance to see sick the musical six a couple weeks ago in Detroit which is going to be the basis of our uh Marching Band program this upcoming fall which was really kind of secret we're really kind of neat to see I had no idea what six was or anything like that so yeah yeah it was fun it was fun so I had no idea what's that what is six six is it's a musical it's almost like it's just a straight concert but it features The Six Wives of Henry VIII um and tells their story right and what it is and it's just it is just a Non-Stop yeah you know it's actually a musical my wife you get behind you know she doesn't like you know play these musicals

but this was just basically like a concert you know Non-Stop no intermission anything like that you know for an hour and a half so anyway so that was kind of fun to see um and then uh another item Mr Huber has been asked to uh do the musicians abroad next summer um what that is gonna be a 16 Day Tour of basically you know I don't know in the past but a bunch of students who've been nominated by their musical teachers uh throughout the state of Michigan he'll take them to Europe uh for 16 days so that should be kind of a cool experience for the kids that are able to do that so just a lot of cool things going on a lot of our RVs for our students as well as well so

thank you all right I just really enjoyed graduation once again nice job on my job principal there I'm gonna go um just really interested in how these Sports start so early you know it used to be it was August you kind of you know in our school was slowly but now it's like you say it's just year-round and I don't know if that's good or not is it good I just I guess it seems like it gets involved with families in the summer time but there's some flexibility there's flexibility they understand that there are going to be things okay you don't want to get involved in interfering in that I guess let's see here but they're because it is important to stay busy but you know again we want daily time too and I guess

that's it awesome thank you I don't have a lot I'm just a shout out of appreciation to our community ed and summer programming our food service that's I know launching I noticed a few messages out there this week people looking for you know sites and it that means that we're providing the services that keep keep things together for our community so really appreciate that also I've enjoyed seeing the updates from our folks that are traveling abroad with summer programs that they've organized through the school they're in Spain right now it's been really really awesome to see the things that they're experiencing there and look at the history too I know some of the chaperones that we're going through to the teachers and they were really excited about the opportunity to see some of the history

so that's exciting and just want to also acknowledge Juneteenth which is why we have a delayed day I hope that everyone had an opportunity to enjoy maybe some extra time off a time of reflection on freedom for everybody in our nation and why we honor that day so that being said no it's your turn thank you um so yeah great year and great ending to the year with graduation and all the events that took place uh I'd like to take my time to honor a fine young man who passed away recently uh Dustin Herron was in our transitions program and he passed away on June 10th from some medical complications and Dustin was a young man who uh I I would say he made sure everyone else around him got what they needed and felt

good about things before he felt good himself um I'll always remember uh his permanent smile that he had he always made sure um you know that he was he was looking out for others and it was always wanting to know how you were doing uh he stopped in uh regularly would visit our office and and he would always say hi and you'd always say how are you doing today and uh I remember right before the uh end of school I said you looking forward to Summer and I was expecting a big smile and a yes and he just looked at me and his smile went away and he said no and I said well why not and he said because I'm gonna miss everybody at school so he just loved school and I just wanted

to honor him he was a fine young man and uh I I'm not sure if he knew how much he touched heart entire crew here we were we were very close we're close to all the kids at the transition the program while the young adults but uh you know he he had a significant impact and and really the reason why we're here and so I just wanted to to honor him so I wanted out or does it all right we have no old business moving on to the consent action agenda can I get a motion support all in favor yes okay I'll post I think so all right moving on to regular action agenda and Excuse me while I hold this out because I didn't bring my glasses today um we are at the fifth

sixth science resource purchase um it is recommended the Board of Education approved the purchase of a package of digital licensing student workbooks and Hands-On lab activity sets of amplify science for a total purchase price of 109 759.16 the amplify package includes complete digital resource access for each teacher and an eight-year digital platform licensing for students one copy of the student workbook for each student and classroom kits for Hands-On science lab activities total cost includes material shipping and digital account setup fees can I get a motion so moved support and as you know we have a process for reviewing and figuring out what resources we're going to use and Scott's here to talk to us about this resource thank you um sorry you get me our committee uh every member apologizes they were all out of

town this week as we know summer comes and traveling for their well-deserved time but um this is the culmination of that Middle School look into science that we started back in 2019 uh if you recall when we approved the 7th and 8th grade science uh last year which just finished their first year of implementation sixth grade was initially included in that and they decided it wasn't fitting for them they wanted to pull back they wanted to wait and it turned out to be a great decision because then we were able to combine conversation into a fifth grade discussion that looks ahead to uh the new building and curricularly if you haven't heard me say it yet you'll hear me say it excitedly over and over again over the next years is that one of the

things we're most excited about that building is the ability to collaborate together as a grade level so this conversation as a fifth and sixth grade group evolved from that the sixth grade group had already looked at and piloted a number of resources so we landed back on amplify we Revisited that and then we brought into that conversation the fifth grade teachers we had them pilot amplify and look at some other resources and collectively they were very excited to make the decision to both make this recommendation for amplify in addition to that they've already set out an implementation um schedule that starts next year kind of sets some initial expectations for all teachers to give a try for next year so that when they step into the fifth and sixth grade building they've already sampled a

few things they're ready to go and jump in and start to collaborate the amplify is a digital experience it utilizes our one-to-one environment provides online access for students and a variety of online materials for teachers including digital lessons that they can use but in addition to that two things that our teachers really liked about amplify so similar to to all of the the resources for science that we've looked at rely on a digital component and then they have this Hands-On set that we know kids need for science the fifth and sixth grade teachers both uh try it out and piloted the Hands-On materials for amplify they felt like it was perfect for their age level and really supplemented well the digital component and the the teacher-led lessons the the student interaction and collaboration that went

along with it and then that Hands-On material the second thing that they really liked and we're actually going to talk about it again next was social studies was an integrated writing component they were really excited and one of the things they leaned on is that they talked about this was they felt like it was really authentic integrated writing that they hadn't seen before and in the write-up I talked about leading up to this our fifth grade for example has been using a resource called Mystery Science that is K-5 or lower elementary loves it the kids love it the teachers love it as we get to fifth grade they the kids like it but they've done it for a while already and it starts to get old and then the teachers who have been around for

a while have commented that it really lacks the rigor and and so they're having to supplement a lot to raise some of the level of thinking and they felt like this amplify really does that for them will this fit nicely into your block schedule then too it'll be perfect yeah the balance of the uh teacher lessons plus the activities um are super flexible so our our envisioned two-person teams will just be able to balance the amount of science that they need and they'll have a ton of flexibility and then the ability the ability to integrate that into writing instruction as well does the whole do all the science teachers have input in this everybody yes everybody that wanted input had an opportunity for input and and so some people because we've had some turnover um

recently uh and you will know one of my go-to science people used to be Julie Moore over at over at South and she just retired this last year um and uh Julie Parish over at West who's been teaching science for sixth grade for 12 15 years and then Kristen turnwald at Grandview um who's been around for about the same amount of time teaching science they're really kind of led the discussion but everybody was involved in that I think the biggest thing that Julie uh promoted and that I 110 agree with her is this this whole Hands-On tactile thing especially with the fifth sixth building right there that is going to take place of our Middle School obviously but there's so there's so many biomes right there and I know since we're plant-based in Michigan it

just it'd be really great to see how that block scheduling can really work towards a lot of tactile Hands-On stuff because it's just so authentic and it's part of why Julie could keep attention of all those students so I mean she is very engaging but all of that outdoor stuff was really cool so we talked us a little bit more about the black scheduling and the time set aside for science specifically so uh as we build our schedule and it's all it's all cloudy right now right it's Misty we haven't um put it all together but uh two-person teams will block together uh with um what we right now believe to be one person who will teach Math and Science one person who will teach the ELA reading and writing and the social studies and

then they will block their schedule together based on how much time they need um with breaks for specials but having that two-person team will allow them flexibility it's not going to be like a middle school schedule where you have seven periods if if I'm teaching Ela and I need 90 minutes instead of 60 minutes I can go to my teaching partner and say hey on this day I need these kids for this amount of time can we flip-flop that and then the same would be uh the same would be there for science or math based on whatever they might be teaching and working with to have that that flexibility okay is there a base level of time expectation for science set aside in that I know they can be flexible back and forth but just

to make sure that that this purchase is protected yeah we're looking at 45 minutes a day um average and we say that average because one day and maybe 30 minutes if we're stealing some another at maybe 90 if if we know we have a lab that happens is there an opportunity for also interdiscipline work so I'm I mean there are times when your science and your math can very much align oh absolutely so well and that's why that's why having that person teach that I can tell you when I started teaching here at Granville Middle School in 1998 I was on the only eighth grade two-person team and it was tremendous the things we did I didn't have to as the English and history teacher I didn't have to talk to the other person about

what what was going to be integrated um it's all part of the planning so it's a super exciting opportunities that it states that it follows the ngss very well can you tell us more about what very well means and if there are any potential gaps yeah so amplify is actually uh one uh it might be the highest rated uh middle level science resource from Ed reports now granted that's that's one report but following the ngss the the the Next Generation science standards that it integrates specific not only content grade level content but science and engineering practices so in some of the units there are two specific units each grade level where they follow up the unit with an engineering type stem type activity and unit so all of those are integrated throughout every unit is

phenomenon based so they will be presented with some overall phenomenon that every lesson will be tied to um and and they'll come back and reflect on how those scientific principles interact with that phenomena so one of the things that kind of fascinated to me was the ability to adjust I can't remember where exactly you said here the age and ability are appropriate articles it's basically you can set reading levels individually for students is it just reading levels or is it also comprehension levels and I guess my question is right I mean how do you how do you um how do you teach something right if you're teaching two different yeah you know pieces of information right not necessarily it's the same information I guess it's just the level of the ability to read it right

I mean are you really are you really teaching the same content at the end of the day right yes is that it makes sense what I'm asking it 100 it makes sense what you're asking and you're going to hear Middle School social studies say that that reason was one of the things that lifted one resource over another one was that they felt like when you shifted that reading level it it didn't get across the same content it it yeah it then you lost things you lost so it's not only the content level within this for fifth and sixth grade um they found that vocabulary was still all the same which is one of the main components within that reading level of um of the science content is making sure that kids are having that vocabulary

and then the overall Concepts were still okay we're still the same but it's a very legitimate question because I mean it's one of those things that's great with obviously some of the digital resources that I never thought of right you can start Taylor things for for students right now to reach them but at the same time is it still the same content right you know is it allow that teacher to still you know deliver the same content grade level accessibility to content for students who might be below where you know giving everyone the same book and yeah or like giving a child yeah conceptualize it in my mind now that it works yeah I think the key is you know if you've defined what's essential for kids and know and be able to do and

whichever level it is if they meet them learning those things then you should be good you might learn more of more stuff in in one way but but are you learning what's essential for kids to know and know where to do and if you can do that at that that level that's different from the other then to me that that's what matters does it give us the ability to pick it up like some of the I remember some of the maps uh um you know programs the kids used to have right you would you know you'd go and do these online math things but if they were just blowing through it right teachers have the ability all right you know there's enough of this right you know let's gear it up a little bit and

push them and push them and push them do these types of programs allow us to do that to the extent yet or not yet yes yes uh but where I think it becomes more valuable is outside that reading level so uh one of the things that you read about was this includes their digital component includes a number of uh online simulations that kids can go in and explore things with so you can adjust levels uh you know you okay what happens in this simulation if you increase the gas pressure and things like that so that type of thing that flexibility really upticks uh the level of rigor and the level of thinking um which is important because it goes beyond reading level right sometimes uh kids who might struggle reading can be our deepest thinkers

right right we just need to get them past the the reading challenges cool a little bit about the camera or just the whole vertical alignment yeah so that's the the alignment one of the things that our committee Roger LED with that which which I appreciate um one of the things that we have made sure that we have been Rock Solid about is uh the first step of NAX exploration is alignment and how does any program align uh to our current everything else right what does this fit into what we're already doing and the standards alignment is the most important so making sure that our grade level standards are aligned to what they're uh studying this is a resource so this is a resource to help us teach our grade level standards and as long as

we're aligned to our grade level standards then everything's going to line right back up and um and good question because there was some confusion Kim in the spring I got an email from a middle school teacher who said hey we heard this was coming and that this is one of the units and this is our content and I was quickly able to say to them now you know better we've been through the process uh there's a little misinformation yeah all strictly aligned to uh the state grade level standards thank you are the workbooks for the students consumables they are consumables and Brian and I Brian Mulder and I had another follow-up conversation because that was the one thing that I didn't like about this recommendation the the student workbooks are consumables but they're also digital

version so when I talked to Julie when Julie came back with this record of Julie Parish with this recommendation she said Scott I still have a classroom full of workloads we didn't use them at all Kristen in fifth grade said I I I did it first and then I got away from it and then I had probably about five or six kids who still liked the consumable workbook um so in our dialogue with the teachers at the classroom level their feeling was um if we order one set of workbooks one full grade level set that'll probably last us the full eight years otherwise they found and the the rep says this too which I appreciate that we get full PDF copies of all the workbooks so if there's a section that a student or a

class needs in rather than buying the full unit workbook they just print those pages and save some money thank you just a lot of flexibility that's good that's cool I like how it kind of reaches all kids learning ways you know whether it's touching or reading or I like that there's options for kids to get it in different ways thank you teachers are really exciting and in our new building we help we will have rooms that will complement this indeed we will and we've had conversation about how many kits do we need and sharing and sharing space and how that works within the flexible structure of our schedule and everything is there any training provided for teachers to learn that yes uh it includes some professional development um some just some web-based professional development and

then consultation okay is that um just like self-serve or is there time set aside for them yeah we'll schedule we'll schedule some some initial introductions and that's part of our integration plan is as teachers uh go through next year um trying at least a couple of units so it sounds like next year's the transition year and then the New York to that implement Check Yes [Music] all right uh it's a big purchase so we are making a roll call please well done [Music] paper tonight okay hi Lauren yes stethos yes yes Palmer yes Wonder gems yes fine yes congratulations motion carries Amplified don't you run away it looks like we've got more going our next item seven eight social studies resource purchase this one excites me um hold on it was given to me I

gotta use them it is recommended the Board of Education approved the purchase of a package of digital licensing and classroom text sets of Middle School social studies and writable from Houghton Mifflin hardcore for our total purchase price of 173 885.58 the hmh package includes complete digital resource access and a comprehensive set of print resources for each teacher and an eight-year digital platform licensing for students class set text copies and professional development for teachers can I get a motion still moved Deport all right thank you and Mr C is here uh to help me with this one uh we have been waiting on a uh a middle school social studies renewal for a while um our textbooks are are outdated and the additional resources that go along with them um so this was in the cycle

uh to come back up after covid the Houghton Mifflin Houghton Mifflin hardcore is one of the main National Publishers um and the middle school team we started back in the spring they landed on piloting uh to Houghton Mifflin and then a McGraw Hill which is our current resource and I really want to give them they couldn't be here again tonight but I want to give them a lot of credit because when we left our second meeting um there there was a lot of feeling we had previewed everything we dug in we know it was our third meeting and then we picked four they they brought it down to four Publishers to hear presentations from and leaving that they're they're feeling was yeah this is a great update from our current resource which was McGraw-Hill and

then once they got into a full pilot um which is the exact reason and they pulled back some layers about what worked and what didn't work they really landed on Houghton Mifflin um and the nice update for social studies is that um our older resources our the books are falling apart and they had a pdf version but it was a straight pdf version and that was it this is integrated integrated with videos integrated with updated interactive maps um and it just uh digital field trips that allow things to come alive especially the seventh grade teachers really love those digital field trips for teaching some of that ancient world history that is a component of theirs we started as we do with our process but particularly with Middle School social studies uh our very first meeting

was simply talking about the ideal middle school classroom what does a student need what does a teacher need and we put content we put everything else aside and they outlined uh categories and developed a rubric from that one of those that Jason brought up earlier is the technology and accessibility so what's nice about this is the uh adjustable reading level um but this one specifically one of the things that came out and I remember from uh one of the seventh grade teachers told a story about one of his um highest achieving students they were piloting um the McGraw Hill text and she was ready they they had these lessons that they did and then they would go on and do a lesson check and like two in a row this student in tears did the

full lesson and then on the lesson check would get like two out of ten correct and and was just breaking down and so the teacher dug into it and the adjusted levels was completely different components um and and so the assessment wasn't lining up um and so it was just a good story about the importance of that trial and really really trying things out um the hmh this provides it provides some standard assessments for them but it also provides flexibility for them to adjust those assessments together um and and create um things that uh that they believe are important and value the list price on this one is a little higher because it includes a new program called writeable and writable is a a supported writing across the curriculum component that has integrated content-based rubrics

and writing assignments that then become collaborative where kids can work together on writing assignments provide peer feedback edit and fully integrates um and we felt that for eight years the added cost would be worth it um to help us continue to blend those pieces together that program has been up for a while it's just that each of each decided to partner with them well you talk about the price and I immediately was like dividing it by eight years and then our how many students you have for seventh and eighth and I'm like it's like 26 bucks if you're 27 bucks a cake and for everything that it's offering sounds like that's a mark so well and and you'll notice the eight years I I meant to say that in the beginning you know we've when

when I started in this role everything was a six-year license um and now when you think about it what we used to do is we would buy a product and again we've had that social studies text for 15 16 years so we would buy it and we'd hold on to it until bindings were falling off um and now the digital component is so important we're finding that if we buy a six-year license at the end then we're just tacking it on um and and we know if we can we're not going to come back after six years so we can just get a better deal right up front so it was something like this was like social studies right because we're understanding and learning new things about the past all the time do these digital

you know portions allow us to update I mean do they update the content on a yearly basis I mean they're continually adding to the resources another thing you have access to is if you've ever had access to the History Channel yeah all those videos that are on the History Channel are a part of the product and you know and when the kids are studying a particular piece it'll say you can click on you know these these History Channel movies are wrong but it'll say go to minute 32 and through you know 57 or whatever that little piece so they're not watching the entire thing but it'll take you a piece of that History Channel video so they have a lot of resources and they are continuing to add and one thing that we really like

is well their service was a lot better McGraw-Hill was like here you go tell us what do you think and uh this other vendor they were they kept trying to get us to have a training with them which is smart they want to make sure you know everything they so they could we got snowed out one day and they still found a way to meet but they talked about how they want the voice of the uh here to work with their uh designers to continue to add new product they said you know what we're the salesman they always assume we're just trying to get them to add to the products but they want to hear from the schools and the teachers uh ways that we want to improve say they've already been making adjustments for

instance knowing that more schools are going to Google classroom they are working on their uh the usability it already works with Google class but they're trying to enhance that further so their service just seems to be something that we'll be able to come out considering it is a good price but still it's a good it's a lot more so you want to support and and the the add-ins are typically the supplementals um this came with a really nice component of primary source documents for our teachers to rely on um and those are the types of things that they're constantly adding um the main content stays the same because we're getting sets of textbooks um and and that's still important to our Middle School teachers okay and you can get those texts you can click to

get into different languages not just Spanish how did you benchmark content go I'm going to drill it down a little bit more we are in a society that likes to rewrite I'm not necessarily in favor of that but it happens was there any exercise done to validate content yeah great question and I'll come back to the grade level standards everything first step was alignment to grade level content so it's the uh before we move out of any steps everything has to be aligned to our state approved standards and that's it and we did there were a couple of newer kind of flashy online resources that right away didn't work what does that mean Define that for me please it means that the the grade level content was in didn't match our state standards yeah okay

let me let me ask my question in a different way um I'm gonna give some dramatic and drastic comparisons right so when you think of the 1619 project or Christopher Columbus you're paying someone when I went to school which was many decades ago but nevertheless is that content intact in this material yes I in terms of the history of how things happen yeah it all matches our our standards the viewpoints uh and some of the so I was looking through some things today viewpoints is a great word keep going sorry yeah and and I think that's one of the benefits of having a national publisher um they have the capacity to include um updates um but this as a resource doesn't change what we're teaching because we're teaching our general standards so this idea of

critical race theory that we've been hearing about I know we're sensitive to it because it's come up in public comment here and I just want us to assure that that's not what we have going in this new curriculum and we can honestly say that it's been reviewed I mean that's kind of what I'm looking for Scott is that that is something we want to be sure that we're aware of and absolutely yeah okay yeah the same is the eighth grade content that I learned in 1984. then that should be right then right and that's what I think yeah and remember and and we got to be careful with the and you'll see that on this title this is a resource our curriculum is the state standards and we Define we Define our curriculum as the

state standards and that is a really large process that happens between a lot of social studies experts and curriculum experts to Define what those standards are but those standards don't change and that's that's what I mean those are our standards those are the standards that that we follow um and I think what what Scott's trying to say is this is a resource and like any other resource it's not our curriculum it is it is not it is not we don't go page for page and say this is it there are at times gaps and we need to find um with our with our state standards we sometimes have to pull other resources to fill those fill those gaps but it does not change our curriculum in in any way shape or form but as Ken

said this particular resource is very the the it aligns well and it's his 1984. that was my next question well they don't change they don't change so here's the state standards have been updated for social studies but part of the updates included discourse so getting to that you have the resource and part of our curriculum is to teach discourse so that if a question comes up about differing viewpoints on things that teacher has been trained in college to work through that in an unbiased way to have the discussions to hear the points to teach students how to research how to find information how to make determinations for themselves what they want to move forward with but the factual knowledge about about the content of social studies is also dictated in that curriculum so there's there's

like two prongs when you look through social studies which makes it an incredibly complicated um for any publisher to match in our nation because you go to any corner of our nation and there's going to be different viewpoints you go within our own Community there's going to be different viewpoints so they they teach the the instructors on how to handle that in the classroom in the proper way and I mean there's all sorts of things out there that are beyond what our textbooks have right our kids can go to the Internet anytime really sure here it is we still have to confront those things in the classroom I think that's very helpful though distinction between the curriculum and resources that we use to bring that forward right so if I'm hearing it correctly um 15

years ago these books were very flat these resources were very flat and so one of the things I imagine is I've seen a lot of different curriculums used where you can have a map and you pinpoint that map and it blows that up for your kids and then it blows into another thing and you can get into like let's say ancient civilizations with the pottery and how things were used for different tribes or whatever so I think that one of the things that we talk about with resource is that our resources are not engaging right like those old resources are just not do you commit to making a purchase like this you're saying that hey they have all kinds of resources they have done those searches and brought all kinds of pieces of information together

yeah and we're not going to use them all we're going to pick and choose what works best for our kids but it's but those standards will always drive what we pick and choose for sure but I want to go back and be a little more direct because I didn't I didn't okay that's my question so for years we know the the times we're living in and the questions that are asked and and things like that and um for years we've taught world religions right and and we teach world religions as a basis of understanding we're not teaching world religions as a way of indoctrination or anything else right it's it's it's that awareness piece and everything within the resource is exactly the same even when it comes to American history which in recent times has

become a little more controversial and perception right and and the way some things uh people believe them to be presented or or worry that they're presented um the history content is the same and that's what I mean by in terms of following the standards so in these resources we're not going to find anything that allows our teachers to fall into that because we don't want them in that situation that's what we talked about right beginning of the year last year we talked about this is where we are um and presenting kids to be thinkers of themselves so you're not going to find that in here and frankly neither do the Publishers no no who they have known I work for one you know like it's it's not a good place for them to be they

know it they know it silence so I hope that's more direct yeah it is I still as Barb eloquently stated um I would prefer to triple check yes so from my perspective I would love to um make a motion to table this and at least to have any board member that wants to review the content allow them the ability to review the content and we take care take it up at the next board meeting I would I'm going to make a motion to that actually right now still need a second to make it I don't support that I mean table it for a month or the next four week is there any impact if it's weighted on a month uh it just delays our order for the books uh potentially I mean if we waited

a month we'd be July 17. yeah um I don't know I'm torn in answering that okay because I don't I that's your I don't want to impact that decision either way I want you to be comfortable with a decision and I'm confident you will be I I'll set you up with full teacher access that's that's that's not a problem uh at all um I'm not well okay the motion's on the table it's been seconded but I'm not comfortable proceeding right now with a positive vote for this until I do my own verification because of the sensitivity of this over the last four years in a constantly I do for the record feel very comfortable because I know our administrators are districts in the process that we have in place for them to review and I

know that they are very aware of the climate that understand what the Publishers are doing and not doing and they are keeping social studies at a million foot length right now it is not a bridge they are willing to cross even in this climate knowing you all knowing that I just have to express that before we vote if you want to have a special meeting early July to just vote on this that's fine but anyway that's you know we still need to discuss or finish the discussion and vote on the motion table is it possible to have another meeting early in July I mean we can call one doesn't maybe have to get a quarantine and I'm not available for the first two weeks of July I can already tell you that I guess I

I feel a little uncomfortable starting to Wade in into this realm because if we don't trust our administrators to make these decisions and to do these things then what what do we have the administrators for because we can start to pick a part and review all of these items um and say oh sorry this isn't the right way to go go back to the drawing board but this is what we Empower them to do it gets in my view we Empower them to make these decisions and as a manager myself right if my manager starts to come in and starts to say hey you know what I don't trust anything you're doing you know let me review it all I'm starting to go you know what I don't know if this is the place for

me and I'm gonna go look for something else if they want all that responsibility um so I guess I view view very comfortable or I feel very comfortable with the due diligence that our teachers and our Professionals in this space have done and they understand the climate that we're in so I don't think they would steer us wrong and so I guess I don't support us tabling this for another time if they'd come to us and said hey we've done our due diligence we've done our job trust me to do that we've done our job you know I think that's that's where we that's where I stand is saying hey yep head of steers me wrong let's you know I approve can you oh I was just going to say I'm thinking of our seventh

and eighth grade staff and having known them for a long time they come from a very diverse political background and you look at our our teachers there you know I know them personally I can tell you that uh every state would have waited every teacher uh participated in the pilot I feel like that would have been brought up since you've been on the board James yeah how many exceptions have been asked similar to this none and that's why I'm kind of not understanding why are we doing it now we're not I thought I explained my position quite clearly but it's due to the social imbalance in the decisions school boards can make and when it came to science did I say anything no I mean I was fine with all the questions that were asked

everything was great why not why didn't you say anything there could be controversial things in science not from my perspective no no I mean I really didn't you know I mean unless you're gonna throw sex head into it but no in this situation it's a sensitive subject and I Just Want to Have Eyes on it it's you know what if the motion fails fine then we just have to deal with the boat s questions all right let's take a motion all right let's take a vote on the motion detail we'll see where that proceeds and then we'll move from there um so just to be clear yeah a a yes vote is to table a Novo is to continue to continue thank you for clarifying yes Palmer no Highborn no stephas yes gardein no tejan

yes Klein no nose purse I have okay okay majority thank you before we take it to the next step any further discussion on the package I did want to say that um I thought about all the lies that had been on this I'm aware that you're aware of those issues that we don't want to confront you know we want to be clear on that with I I only know it by critical race Theory there might be some other names for it and honestly I don't know if I'd know if I thought so that's another reason why I voted no but I just felt like um there have been a lot of people looking at this with that lens and that's what I'm trusting is that that has been done and that our staff and and

this is also still available for all of us too peruse so we can still peruse this and not so let's let's talk about that what what we just talked about because even though it was voted down doesn't mean it was an important it's not important to people in our community how do we make sure our staff is fully trained to confront these topics to be unbiased to work with varying political views that will be proposed in their classroom and make sure that that follows our state curriculum and our district policies and standards and how is that assessed today before this season comes into play we have no standard Ken we have a standard to assess how social studies is taught when you're not in the classroom so what you're asking is do I think teachers

teach differently when I'm not in the room yep and I believe that's true though I don't know I don't know what planning here on that I think we don't need to be disrespectful to our administrators and I'd appreciate it I think I would answer that question Kim in that um what we're teaching isn't changing right uh this is just a new resource yeah to teach the same content that we have been teaching so the same things that navigating what's come up over the last couple of years will continue to navigate at that level of success I heard that some teachers and maybe it's the resources that you talked about can but like they're individually be using them as opposed to the team and I again I don't know if that's true or not but I'm

asking if that's true where oh I really like this Resource as an individual teacher so I'm bringing it in that doesn't happen no I don't believe that to be true they work in plc's yeah and they get together as departments and they have created based on the state standards uh those each unit that they teach and what resources they're going to use and we have documents now that we've all created that shows exactly even the resources that they're using now will that part of our document change if we were to approve this yes it would because we'd have some different resources because we've been using a McGraw resource for a long time but but it would it would be a different name to some of those resources but it but we are still following the

state standards and uh uh that will not change that is that is what we expect and they plan them together and their their lessons they won't be exactly the same but they're very similar I would think the classes room itself and the students in there yeah I've been an evaluator for history and social studies for the 10 years I've been here I'm that's my department that's what I've been evaluating they don't know what I'm coming so for them to all of a sudden be able to change on the Fly because I walked in a room I don't think they would do that anyway but but that would be very difficult to do and I believe that our we have a lot of Savvy parents but that follow what's happening in our classrooms I think that

there was something that was uncomfortable uh that we'd be hearing that you know if that was happening but I just I feel like our teachers work really hard to become consistent and to follow the standards that have been identified by the state so I'm sorry I have a hypothetical question then so something um big problem comes up with this resources what's the process to delete that resource or eliminate that from this is there how would we go about doing well we would we would work with Ken and his team and uh like Roger said this is just a resource so if there is a component somewhere embedded in there or or something gets added that doesn't follow our standards or doesn't follow our teaching or what we believe we shouldn't use it okay I like

like Roger said this is not a front to back book where everybody has to teach every page use every resource we're we're pulling in those that we believe to be most valuable and in fact the resource is so abundant there are things we won't it's just because we won't have time we'll choose what's most important so I understand that you have a resource and that you follow state standards and you'll pluck through that and match what you need from that resource to the state standards and the standards include discussing difficult topics and we've stated as a district that we need to have unbiased classrooms I've heard that at the beginning of the year and we've talked about not having Political Items in the classroom not bringing those personal opinions in I've heard that multiple times

coming back to my question before about supporting folks I think what's different for them that I was asking about is just the the our community is different like the times are different and there's more pressure on this topic how are we supporting our staff to deal with students coming in that might be a little more politically charged in one way or another than they have been in the past well I'm talking about these topics yes I taught it for years and kids walked in they're like teach me it's not the same I mean even my own dinner table is not the same as it was five years ago um it's it's interesting so I'm curious about how we can support teachers with us well I think ongoing conversation like Ken said our plc's our meeting

regularly with administrative support um at the high school level we just encourage ongoing conversation with their administrator so they can have sometimes a third fourth or fifth year right that teachers are working together in planning through their PLC uh what they're going to be doing in the classroom so they have that initial basis of support to make sure that that what they're doing fits that goal and then working with Administration as another layer we have we have experts in how to facilitate conversations in with topics that are you know the discourse and the different topics that that can be uh it can be of a huge problem if not done properly so and those people can help some of our people in in key places I think that's important I know I know with everything

we've been through over the past few years that when we look at resources in particular this one that we're all looking at it the real lens of what trouble could this cause could this cause all of us because we don't want you know in any way shape or form to have a teacher unintentionally for a lack of a better term step in it because it's not good for them when that happens it's not fun for any of us and so when we look at resources the alignment piece is key and will there be mistakes made over the years Yep they're well and we have a process that we follow with our staff when that happens to ensure that it doesn't happen again but our people are very aware of the times we're living in and

and I you know as we're going through resources and as we're teaching what we expect our students to know and be able to do I assure you that they are very careful in what they're selecting to facilitate that lesson so that it's based on that discussion in the last five minutes I feel a little more comfortable about it I see Bob's point about maybe just getting a third set of eyes on it what the heck if we got time um either way any more comments all right this is another large purchase so let's do a call vote on it please okay Palmer yes dardeen yes Dahan trust Roger yes yes Winter Jam no hi board yes fine yes pass thank you very much appreciate all the staff too if you could send our appreciation to

them for those work that it takes to evaluate and pilot curriculum it's no easy task and in addition addition to the work that they already do they're paid for so I very much appreciate that all right if I could see some if if we can get some copies for board members to do that'd be great so let's make sure we do that thank you we're moving to the 2022-23 budget amendment it is recommended that the Board of Education approve the resolutions within the 2022-2023 final budget booklet as presented for the following funds general fund Food Service fund Student Activity fund capital projects fund sinking fund capital projects fun 2013 2015 2019 bond fund capital projects fund 2020 2022 2024 bond fund can I get a motion so moved before sorry I'm just pulling that document

back up froze up on us okay this is again like we talked the resolutions are in here for the um final budgets for the following funds general fund Food Service Student Activity and capital projects all three different funds under the capital projects um kind of get to that page sorry so you have the resolutions here but I did want to just point out um basically bottom line on the general fund and as we discussed looking at a 221 thousand dollar Surplus um and then the other fund that I really want to touch on just briefly is Food Service for the current year in particular as we discussed you can see we at the end of 2122 we ended with a rather large fund balance 1.5 million as compared to 378 the previous year and I

know I don't go back further than 2021 for the purposes of this presentation but it usually is around somewhere between 300 and 500 000 that we run fund balance wise in food service because of the that Federal funding we do have a large carry forward and um and I know that that spend down plan of 1.1 looks very large as well but again we did submit that to the state for approval we did receive approval and in terms of ongoing costs out of that 1.1 are just our normal wage increases that align with a contract and um potentially in addition of an assistant food service director um we've had Jeff and I have had some conversation and he has not given me any indication of a date or anything but we talked about just that

um a plan you know for when he is ready and getting somebody in he does a great job his staff does a great job you know I we're not we're probably one of the few self-operating districts around here a lot of other districts use Chartwells or Aramark so really would like to keep that in-house as best we can so um sinking fun looking at a surplus of 1.2 million that will help with a 4.1 million of expenditures that will be coming up with the roofs Etc in the next year and then the 2013 1519 bond fund will have a deficit of 725 thousand dollars [Music] and the 22 20 22 24 bond fund will have a deficit of 14.3 million and those are typically how those are run because those funds are meant to be

spent so [Music] any questions regarding 22-23 final budgets for those funds thanks jeremony thank you thank you appreciate it on the comments or questions all right all in favor yes yes opposed oh some carries thank you I have a page using oh it's over here these two are the same no no they have the title run it should be on the final one that's not it all right Scotty 76. yeah it just I thought I was looking at the title she got it thank you so much yep appreciate it had it all lined up couldn't even read it all right here we go final one for the evening looking at the 23 24 budget adoption it is recommended that the Board of Education approved the resolutions within the 23-24 budget booklet as presented at the

budget hearing on June 20th 2023 for the following funds general fund Food Service funds Student Activity fund Capital project fund sinking fund capital projects fund 2013 2015 2019 bond fund capital projects fund 2020 2022 2024 bond fund debt fund information only it is further recommended that the Mills be levied on properties located within the Granville public school district will be general fund 18 meals on online Homestead Properties Capital project funds sinking fund 1.3521 Mills on all properties aheadly roll back from 1.4 mils and the debt fund 5.0500 Mills on all properties can I get a motion it's almost support um and I guess just to reiterate um the summary from our budget hearing earlier looking at a operating deficit in the general fund of 518 000. Food Service fund um deficit a hundred and some

thousands sorry um [Music] and then continued spend down plans um for the sinking fund and then the other two Bond project funds um in addition of about a hundred thousand to the Student Activity if you want I can pull up any of those slides again too from the budget hearing if needed to us the slides yeah I can send the slides too yep thank you Heather I should have asked an earlier meeting but I've heard talk that the turf needs to be replaced on the field and I don't think that's in this year's budget at all right uh no Turf replacement is not in the budget that is something that we're planning for we've had discussion we're working um with GMB I know I I've talked to Arlen about that and the maintenance on and

we're talking The Stadium turf correct yeah um yeah the maintenance on that has been good they've been able to add the pellets and take care of it and upkeep but yeah that will be coming at some point in the future I'm trying to remember I think that was was that like 2011. we're gonna Dome it in too at that time come on a campaign for that one that's right come on anything that gets people out is a football team you go there I just like that's what people are it'll pay for itself Brian he just like you know we added the rubber pellets every year and I don't know if it was last summer the summer before that he just said it was getting near the end of its life yeah yeah that's tell you

what I probably got some the whole bag full of pills every time the kids home come home from practice it's just like everywhere we stop wearing your cleats in the house oh Dyson gets a workout it does for a while there when I first saw I thought that we had like a mice infestation anyway back to budget any other questions about earlier all right all in favor yes yes opposed thank you for all your hard work motion carries yes thanks Kayla we both do our our district so well all right um we are moving to the public comment section of our board meeting um just a reminder for those speaking that we have a five-minute limit Mr highbower will give you a warning at four minutes um and the bylaws and rules about public comment

on the back please make sure that when you're speaking that you are making sure that your comments are germane to the board and that if you are making any statements that violate the rights of others under the laws of defamation invasion of privacy that you consult your legal advisor first all that being said we only have one tonight Mr chocolate hello my name is Alan Traxler I live in Granville and I have two students going to school here I was going to speak in general support of public education making some notes of how it's important that it's opened everybody regardless of if you're poor disabled or just can't get transportation to school it's in sharp contrast to private education but I'm really bothered Bob by your comments about the history and the Middle School history

social studies textbooks because when you bring up the 1619 project when you voice these concerns I feel that you are eating a steady diet of just right-wing talking points and content so I don't know if you're getting it from radio or the social media accounts you follow but there's just a cesspool of pretending that one issue maybe one tiny facet of something is happening all across the country there's a big freak out that occurs and you specifically mentioned the 1619 project but this publisher it's Houghton Mifflin it's like the biggest one in the whole country there's like three giant textbook Publishers and they play it safe they want to sell textbooks to every single School District from Texas to Idaho to Mississippi and they want to access the biggest market so they're going to play

cool they're going to play a chill they're not going to inject a bunch of controversial topics they're going to try to present things factually in ways that people can mostly agree on in fact a lot of textbooks play to the biggest Market which is Texas there are entire publishing houses who will try to sell to Texas because they know if they can sell a textbook in the conservative state in red Republican Texas if they can sell it there they can sell it to every Market available to them and it's why sometimes Texas gets in trouble with their textbooks when they have references to slaves as helpers so that's one issue where they've gone too far you got to be open and honest about how things actually were and it can tip in the opposite direction

where there are Publishers who try so carefully not to offend a panicking and freaking out conservative audience that they whitewash history to a degree that does our nation a disservice I think these textbooks are going to be just fine and I appreciate Dr barup's comment about providing them to the board members but I challenge you to read them I have heard your comments regarding controversial fiction books and that you have commented I don't need to read them I have this quote in front of me that is a dirty quote and you don't feel a need to actually read the fiction books but you brought it up tonight and I am laying the challenge here to you to read the materials provided read the charts read the PDFs read the textbook I think I'm going to

come back in maybe two score meetings so maybe I'll give you a three and see and I'll ask if you've read them so that's my challenge to you read them anybody else that voted like you Mr stefos you Mr Dahan to table the motion you've got time you've got a summer vacation read them I'll be back thank you thank you the next regular meeting will occur um but I want the next meeting [Music] in the middle of everything [Music] the next board meeting of the Granville Board of Education will meet on Monday July 17th at 7 pm here at the administration building this meeting is adjourned seconds
