Welcome to the Calonia Community Schools regular board meeting, >> March 16th. Let's stand for the pledge. >> Algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Robert Garcia >> here. >> Clement >> here. >> Collins >> here. >> Con here. Morris. >> Nicholls >> here. >> Nice. Tim informed everybody he'd be out of town for work this week. So, um, on to number four, we have recognition. I'd like to have Mr. Peanut come on up. Just as I put this mint in, I'm sorry. Uh, good evening. And uh tonight we have the the awesome presence to be able to celebrate and honor our girls bowling state champions, division one state champions. And I do
need to say it's even better because we beat Rockford in three straight games. So that's always a great thing. Um so uh led by our two coaches, uh Prescott Hullbrook right there and Brandon Luxford. And then we've got Miss Luxford. Oh, you want me to go by your first names probably, don't you? Addison Luxford Caitlyn. >> That's my last name. >> Riley Kellakanic. Is that how you say it? >> Oh, that's not it. Sorry. Miss Salsner. And I almost said I almost called you my sister name. But Casey Rostad >> and Miss Douglas, Abigail Douglas. So, uh, I think I'm going to turn it over to them and let them talk to you a little bit about the season and how we got to the state finals and had a great day to to take
down the mighty Rockford. >> So, I got my injuries that get that. >> Uh, good afternoon. Uh, I kind of have a little bit of a speech here. Not so much a rundown of the season, but kind of just a summary of everything uh, in speech form. So, I'm not here only to talk about a state championship, but I'm also here to talk about a journey. At the start of the season, I think all of us were a little concerned. Having only five girls, I didn't know what this team would be capable of or how far we would go. Unfortunately, this doubt only grew when one of our girls got injured, leaving us with a four-player team. However, after taking zeros and still winning, we got an extra player and the determination we needed. Every
match became a test to see if we were truly ready. These setbacks that seemed major at the time only made us stronger. During this time, we all learned a valuable lesson. Trust one another. Bowling is just as much an individual sport as it is a team sport. Having those moments of having everything out of your control is scary, but I truly believe that this trust we had in one another was the key to more than one title. Now we get to regionals and have the motivation to get back to where we were last year. and redeem ourselves. That motivation alone was enough to get us back to states, winning the regional title by over 500 pins. States was a different story. We knew we wanted to win, but I think we lacked the confidence in
ourselves. We needed a boost, good energy, and maybe a team trying to get us disqualified to bring everyone together. After making the cut during qualifying, we knew what we could do. When the other teams were burnt out, we only got stronger. We were ready to win, so we did. It came down to a fifth match against Oxford for us to come back from a 2 to1 deficit. Then we swept Leavonia Churchill to move on to the finals. And who else would we bowl than Rockford, our nemesis? After coming second to them one too many times, it was time for a change. We swept Rockford three to zero to win a state title. Not one individual, not one coach paid a full team who won. An entire season of dedication, teamwork, and perseverance. It all paid
off when it mattered most. >> Well, thank you for that. And uh we have some certificates here. So, we're going to come around and we're going to shake some hands. And then I think there picture or two after that. And then maybe we'll just take a minute at that point and the board members can each congratulate them as well. But uh I'll meet you on the other side. >> All right. >> Stand up Abigail. >> Riley. >> Congratulations. Now, how is the last name? Oh, see >> there's and nice job on the speech >> and Casey. >> Thank you, >> Casey. Is that how you do? >> All right. All right. And coach, here's one for you. >> Congratulations, coach. Congratulations very much. >> Always want I used to coach for many years and I
wanted one of these. >> You want to look this? >> Oh, I got you. >> All right. Awesome. Well, how do you want to do this picture? >> Should we turn it around and go this way? >> Why don't we do that? >> Why don't you come up here? >> Stand in front of the cow there a second. >> Mr. Brandon, you want to come around, too? That's a good cover. >> Okay, I'm just going to take a bunch. >> Thanks. Well, we are super super proud of you. And uh bowling is one of those sports that, you know, you don't always get all the limelight of others, but we really thought we wanted to make sure that we had you come in tonight so you could get some of that and understand how much
uh we are proud of all the work that you guys did. And we had heard stories about this team that was down to four, but then back to five. And so just really thrilled for your success. And you're right, it always does feel good to take down Rockfords. Never. >> All right. Wonderful. Let's uh take a minute here, shake some hands, and thank you all for coming in. >> I can't lost track of time cuz I saw her. >> See, champions is a big deal. So, >> thank you so much. >> Congratulations. >> So cool. Oh, thanks. So fun to watch her run. Great job. >> Congratulations. >> Great job. >> Thank you. >> Congratulations. >> So cool. >> Thank you so much. >> And this is a team effort. Also want you to know
that uh Riley got some individual recognition as well. Um >> as the uh what top junior in the state uh voted on by folks across the state. So congratulations ON THAT TOO. AND WE GOT ONE MORE THING. >> Also just found out today that we were um academic all state as a team and then Addie got individual on top of that. >> AWESOME. SUPER. WELL, so glad you can come in tonight. Appreciate it. and you don't need to stick around cuz I know you all have homework and other things you want to do rather than sitting for our meeting. But uh do appreciate you coming in. So, and we'll look forward to great things next year, too. >> Yes. >> Thank you. >> Awesome. >> I'll get back to you. All right, moving on to
five. Student representative, Abby Linker. >> Hi. Um, my name is Gabby Linker and I am a part of the student council at the high school. Um, and I just have a couple things that the high school is doing. Um, so there will be for the National Honor Society, there will be a blood drive on Thursday the 19th um in our South Learning Commons at the high school. And then for student council, we just completed another successful Winterfest dance and our theme was um glow night. So our cafeteria and gym had a bunch of glow sticks and decorations um that a ton of students came to and socialized at and um I think it went really well. As for upcoming um student council is partnering with an outside organization that the administration brought in to hold
a distracted driving event for the junior just the junior class in April. Um we are also hosting our fourth annual spring carnival that's in the parking lot on Friday May 1st. Um so that has games and food trucks, live music um by our jazz band and our choirs at the high school. um advertising booths for our clubs and then an art showcase, a petting zoo and a bunch of other fun activities that our spring carnival committee is currently planning. And then also for our first time ever, we are hosting a senior survivor. So for two nights, um students stay the night at the school and they like play activities and do challenges and they are raising money for the student assistance program at the high school which is really cool. And then my last thing
is our mock trial competed at the Oakland County Courthouse and out of 21 teams they finished as an honorable honorable mention. Um so they did a really good job um arguing their case and once again just demonstrated they can academically compete with the best in the state. And that's it for me. >> Thank you. >> Wonderful. Thank you. >> All right. On to public comment. Just a reminder that we have two public comment participation periods. The first period is for those wish to speak on the board to the board pertaining issues appearing on tonight's agenda. We will have another public participation period towards the end of the meeting for general public comment. We have none. >> We have none. So we will move on to consent agenda in seven. A. February 9th, 2026 regular meeting
minutes. B. March 11th, 2026 committee of the whole minutes. C. February 2026 payables. D. March 2026 personnel report. E. Additional overnight trip. F. May committee date change. May 11th, 2026. I move that the board approve the consent agenda as presented. >> Sorry. >> All right. Any discussion? >> Roll call. >> Con? Yes. Brando? >> Yes. >> Barbara Garcia? >> Yes. >> Nicholls? >> Yes. >> Collins? >> Yes. >> Clement? >> Yes. >> Perfect. On to eight. Superintendent report. >> All right. Uh relatively short report tonight, but it has been just a great couple of weeks, not only with the bowling team success here, but a number of our athletic teams had outstanding success. Really a long uh list. And then um just wanted to also mention a couple of other things that in the past
week were really uh awesome to see and uh we had a lot of folks dedicate a lot of time to organizing. And the first of those was our college and career fair. Uh that took place over two days at the high school where uh the north gym was filled with uh tables and uh representatives uh the first day from various uh colleges and um uh second day from various career opportunities for our students. And not only was that open to uh Calonia High School students, but other students from uh many surrounding area high schools uh bust over and uh took the benefit of that. And so just real um thanks to those members of our high school staff who put that all together. And then the second thing was uh last week on Thursday uh
our unified basketball game uh that took place in the gym was a pretty awesome site to see. Uh all of our students just did a fabulous job of support uh for both uh teams, ours from Calonia and our visitors from Jennison who came over uh to play as well. And so uh just really an awesome environment uh to be in and uh the the students who are out there on the court uh really uh had the time of their life. So we again thank all those who put a lot of effort into organizing uh that game as well. So um that's it for my report today. >> Excellent. Oh sorry I forgot one other thing. Just a reminder that our committee the whole meeting next month uh we will be having at Emmens Lake uh
elementary. I'll make sure uh that next time we'll only be across the street if uh you forget where you're headed but uh Emmens Lake for next month. >> All right. Wonderful. Nine action items. A 2026 bond ratification resolution. >> I move that the board approve the resolution ratifying the sale of the 2026 refunding bonds. Second. Just if I could, uh, we are near the end of that process and so, uh, after the board's, uh, vote tonight. Uh, we will have one more set of kind of meeting things to, uh, wrap things up and then this, um, refunding will be complete. And again, Sarah, the number I'm putting you on the spot here, the number that this will end up saving the district's taxpayers is >> seven. It was about 7% um, savings around 800 something,
thousand, I think. >> Yeah. just shy of a million dollars that this will save uh in the life of these bonds. So, uh that is excellent um ability to take down that obligation for our taxpayers. >> Any questions? >> Barbara Garcia, >> yes. >> Nicholls, yes. Collins, >> yes. >> Clement, >> yes. >> Phone, yes. Brando, >> yes. All right. B, school bus purchase SY 2627. I move that the board approve the purchase of two 77 passenger school buses and 53 passenger lift wheelchair bus from Hookstra Transportation at a cost of $472,296. I'll second discussion. >> We talked about this at a couple different committee meetings now and stuff. So, um, all right, roll call. >> Randall, >> yes. >> Hone, yes. Nicholls, >> yes. Garcia, >> yes. >> Clement, >> yes. >> Collins, >>
yes. >> All right. C, internet service. Oh, sorry, guys. I move that the board approve a 36-month contract with Spectrum Enterprise to provide internet service at a monthly cost of $1,440 for a total contract cost of $51,840. >> Sorry. Discussion. Roll call, please. >> Collins, >> yes. >> Clement, >> yes. >> Cone, yes. Brandal, >> yes. >> Barbara Garcia, >> yes. Nichols, >> yes. >> D. Schools of choice resolution. If I could interject. So, this is uh these are three different uh technically three different resolutions. So, we should probably list them as three separate votes. So, I know there's kind of lumped together under one thing, but uh we are again voting on um schools of choice resolution under section 105, then the Kent County um version of that, and then section 105C, which uh
governs outside of Kent ISD. So, first I move that the board approve the resolution to not accept applications for enrollment under section 105 for the 2026 2027 school year. >> Second >> discussion. >> Barbara Garcia, >> yes. >> Nicholls, >> yes. >> Holland, >> yes. >> Clement, >> yes. Con. Yes. Rando. >> Yes. >> Sorry. Uh, I move that the board approve the resolution to participate in the Kent ISD collaborative schools of choice program for the 2026 2027 school year. >> Second. >> Any questions? uh just for the public's benefit. So what this means is that we will not participate in what the state's framework is for schools of choice under section 105C, but instead as we've done for many many years now, we will participate in the one designed here within Kent County uh
that uh follows a slightly different uh approach, but one that is better suited for our district. >> Uh Nicholls, yes. Barbara Garcia, >> yes. Clement, >> yes. >> Collins, >> yes. >> Rhino, >> yes. >> Con, yes. >> And I move that the board approve the resolution to not accept applications for enrollment under section 105C for the 2026 2027 school year. >> Second. >> Questions? Please. >> Clement. >> Yes. Collins, >> yes. >> Brando, >> yes. >> Con, yes. Nicholls, >> yes. >> Barbara Garcia, >> yes. >> All right. On to E. Nola, bylaw 0172. >> I move that the board conduct the second reading and adopt the revisions to bylaw 0172 as presented. >> Second. Any questions, conversation? >> So, this bylaw is the one uh governing the board's legal council and talked about
this a number of times now and uh so appreciate the work on this uh with this revision. >> Roll call, please. >> Cone, yes. Brando, >> yes. >> Barbara Garcia, >> yes. >> Nicholls, >> yes. >> Collins, >> yes. >> Clement, >> yes. >> All right. F. State school aid action act section 27L letters of agreement. >> I move that the board approve the resolution ratifying the letters of agreement regarding the distribution of section 27L funds. Second questions. >> Again, I'll just for the public's benefit, 27L was uh a large allocation provided to all Michigan public school districts uh this year to assist in educator compensation and uh required us to uh work with each of those groups. And uh so that has been done and this money uh will be included in all of
our employees uh checks um uh this Friday actually. So appreciate again the board's interest in this one. >> Roll call please. >> Nicholls >> yes. Garcia >> yes. >> Highlands >> yes. >> Rando >> yes >> con. All right, on to 10 discussion items. Anticipated board consideration April 20th, 2026. A Chromebook purchase. Good evening. Uh we're at the time of year where we come through and ask to uh replace some of our Chromebooks. We try to do 20% uh each school year and those devices go out to elementary. um we'll start at craft and then freshman and kids in K4 use the same Chromebook through those grades. Then five through eight continue with the same device and then freshman start with new ones. Um then when we retire the old ones, uh some go into
our spare stock and get distributed to new students who may come during the year. uh others that are not quite in the condition where we'd want to hand them back out. Those become parts units and we take everything out of there that we can, screens, keyboards, trackpads, etc. So, we keep using them until there's nothing left of them. Um, and this purchase is out of the REMC statewide contract. uh they conduct that bid every um January during the winter and in March they release those results and we have selected Chromebooks from Lenovo. Uh this was the low bid in the category of devices that we are looking for. Um, so we're looking to place that order uh in April with board approval at that time and we'll get them deployed hopefully this summer as soon
as they get here. We are hearing some rumors of supply um constraint issues, but we will take them as fast as we can get them. >> Any questions? How do we do getting people to return their Chromebooks when they're done? >> Uh, very well. We collect those at the on the last day of school um each year and um high school has been keeping theirs over the summer. Uh but we collect them the end of the year in in middle school. The ones at Craft and at the elementaryaries, uh those stay in carts all year long, so those are already collected. Uh but seniors do a very good job. Uh the last day that they're here for classes, um we have people out in the building and they turn them in. We've got a checklist,
turn the Chromebook in, turn the charger in. Um it's very very high, 99%. There may be three or four that we don't get, but we do chase those down and typically we do get them back. >> Thank you. >> The high schoolers keep them all four years. >> That's correct. Yes, please keep them. >> Yep. >> And that gets them to take better care of them when they know this has got to last me four years. So, and they do a good job. All right. Thank you. On the B filter first insulation. All righty. Good evening. Uh first reading on a couple three of them tonight in a row here for me. Um, back in the early part of this year, we talked about the uh the passage of the filter first uh amendment to
PA 1116 um and how we are going to be moving through the rest of this year to procure and install the new water fountains and bottle filler stations throughout the district. Um so we have our bottle filler fountains on hand in stock and ready to go. Um, an RFQ was published for the installation of 60 of those units throughout the district. Uh, this morning we held the pre-bid meeting right here for that and we had good attendance. So, we are looking forward to some some good bids. Um, and we'll have the numbers in for the committee meeting and for next month. And again, this is uh part of the filter first grant from the state of Michigan. So questions. All right. On to the boiler replacement. The boiler uh one of the two boilers at
Paris Ridge Elementary School has developed a critical failure uh with a significant crank crack in the heat exchanger assembly. Um, so we're looking at the cost of repair and replacing that unit. Um, that has been in service since 2009, which is a correction to something from last week. We had 1996 on there. It's like, nope, that's cool. It wasn't there in '96. So, we got to get that we got that taken care of. Thank you, Darl. Um, so it's been in service since 2009. Um, in evaluating acquisition costs and the remainder of usable life of that dual boiler system. So, if we replace one, we got to replace the other. Um, we're we put out an RFB to look at the pricing opportunities to replace both of them at this time. Um, it is close
to end of life for the other unit. So, repairing it may be a uh an investment we don't want to make. We'd rather, you know, make a longer term investment safer for the building. So, we will again tomorrow we have a pre-bid meeting on that one. So hopefully we'll have some good attendance and get some good numbers back on that. So we specify what we want with some alternatives. We've had uh a number of phone calls and people, you know, sending questions, so looks promising. >> Any questions? >> I just have one question. Um with the one boiler down, they still have heat currently. It's getting kind of cold out. >> Yeah. Nope. It's a it's an eitheror situation. That building runs very well on one and they just alternate. Um, and the newer styles,
they run that way much much much more efficiently than we ever have before. So, and this is also an opportunity to step up our efficiency at that building because there have been some significant improvements in this 15-year period. >> So, given the time of year, is it realistic that we could kind of get through these last like colder weeks on what we have and install over the summer? Is that sort of the plan? >> Absolutely. >> Okay. >> No problem. Yeah. And that and keep in mind that of course living in Michigan uh our buildings are prepared to handle you know temperatures down into the negatives. So you know thus right now we're not hopefully in the next couple of days hitting that low. So now that you've said that yeah I know >> sorry.
>> All right. Thank you. D prek furniture purchase. Um, as part of the effort to provide the expanded opportunities for preschool services in the district, um, we have seen the need to outfit eight of the nine predicted classrooms with age and mission appropriate furnishings. Uh, preschool furniture is absolutely a lot of fun. Um, it is it's really great to shop for that versus regular classroom furniture. I got to admit that. um Kent County um ISD, Kent ISD did a a favor for us and they've been able to supply us with some of their shopping lists. So, we've been able to really source this the the the proper stuff. We put together a list compared to what is existing in the new GSRP classroom at Dutton. Um and we ran that list by the people that
are organizing. Um Nate Walters, principal Walters across the street has been very active in organizing this, working with uh with Amy and with with Canalist. So we're doing uh we're doing well there. Um but it looks like we're probably going to have to supply eight classrooms. Um and the list is uh included in this, but the total, which is eight identical classrooms, comes out to $189,9512. We are still evaluating for next month. We should know how much furniture the ISD is willing to leave here when they leave. So, we may have an opportunity to pick up one, two, or at most two and a half classrooms worth of furniture. So, we may be able to bring this down a little bit. So, we're uh we'll see how that how that rolls out. >> Any questions?
When we're structuring the classrooms in these um in these new buildings, are we're getting feedback from the teachers who are already conducting these pre-click K classes right on the layouts and what's absolutely needed whether it's carpet or you know like that those kinds of items. I'm always whenever we do something new, I always you guys know me. I'm always person that says, "Okay, let's make sure we're asking the people are actually in the classroom working it, making sure it's working for them because we always have these ideas of what should work, but actually implementation is a little different." So, I'm always going to ask questions. >> That's a great question. uh across the ISD. Kent ISD operates dozens of classrooms and uh that's why we turn to them for um you know help in rather
than us trying to from memory are trying to anticipate putting this together. It's actually the same exact list which they've used to outfit classrooms across the county and including the four classrooms that are currently here in Calonia. And so that's why um Matt referenced uh the classroom at New Dutton as well because we just opened that year. So um it's very fresh that uh list. So yes, exactly right. And it meets the needs of what our what our classrooms should have for these programs. So in a sense it's really not new because we do have four classrooms in the district already. Thankfully, Kent ISD actually has been doing that kind of research over years worth of providing the service. So, having access to their history and their research with their with their staffing to find
out what works and what doesn't has been a blessing for us. >> Thank you. On to E. Items. >> No other items right now. All right. 11 board comments. I just wanted to thank you guys for staying. Um, I know these meetings are not always like there's a lot of business stuff, but um, I if nothing else, hopefully you guys learned a little bit of there's more than just the everyday school items. There's these big ticket items and all these big decisions that sometimes need to be made. But I'm so glad you guys were here. So, thank you for uh staying. It's really appreciated. All right. On to 12. Public comment. Don't have other words. All right. On to 13. Need a motion to adjurnn. >> So move. >> Second. >> All in favor? >>
I2. >> Thank you.
