um I am very excited to introduce our new hires at farms they came in Fast and Furious so we are very thankful for them first we have Taylor Tor she is teaching sixth grade ELA and math um she comes to us from graduation from Madonna and did her student teaching in Leonia when I talked to her principal her principal had nothing but great things to say about her and was very sad that they didn't have a position for her there so we snuck her up right then and there next to me I have Logan bog Logan is teaching sixth grade science Logan is a 2018 Heartland grad yeah Logan um and then currently um just finished his student teaching at Heartland middle school so we are very excited one thing I love about both of
them is they are very much into collaboration and have already reached out to the coaches or have met with the coaches so to me that shows initiative on not only the curriculum but caring about the kids and they making sure they grow so it's awesome thank you y hello it's nice to uh see all of you again a long time no see um but yeah thank you for the opportunity I uh am glad to be back here and hope to be here for many years to come similarly I'll just end it at that okay [Applause] I think I got the Easter color memo we're all good evening everyone um I have the pleasure of introducing Maggie uh Maggie Reed she comes to us by the way of University of Michigan um we had a opening
an opening in our Middle School choir music department and she Rose to the top in the interview process and is just going to be an outstanding person in this District so I just wanted to welcome Maggie to the Hartland family hi I just want to express my thanks for giving me this opportunity and uh I'm really excited to be here and really looking forward to Growing the music program over at the middle school so thank you very [Applause] much yes um Board of Education I do want to thank you for uh the drivers the drivers were very appreciative today as you dropped off treats for them as they got back from their runs today uh so just uh just want you to know we really appreciate that you did that um thank you for showing
up and um we will work with our DPAC as the months go on to each School throughout the year will provide treats and uh appreciation to our drivers and as you know um we have a new system for the routing and uh it it you know it certainly is not what people are used to as I told the board when we went down this road and uh we're working through all that and we'll be okay just got to keep moving right getting uh um things are different than what they were in the past and sometimes difference is uh very difficult so but we'll work through it and uh we'll get where we need to go um Brian Brian Hassler athletic director uh spring Sports didn't end until uh late into June because of our success
of programs so Brian uh has a a chance now to talk about spring Sports perfect we'll take a little quick trip back to the 23 24 school year uh to talk about the great spring season that we had uh spring Athletics by the Numbers we had 412 participants uh 293 10th through 12th 119 uh in the n9th grade 137 participants in the Middle School track program uh that's 11 Varsity programs one middle school program a total of 23 teams GES uh just some by the Numbers I'm trying to start tracking some of this data um some of the numbers it's been pretty consistent archery was up uh golf was up boys across dipped a little bit girls across girls soccer um softball girls tennis boys track girls track is up obviously we added a new
sport uh new club sport boys volleyball which had a great season uh so those numbers are up overall uh excellence in the classroom Heartland scholar athletes 80% 3.0 GPA or higher uh that was a tick up from the winner which I think was 79 uh k a scholar athlete Award winners 3.25 uh GPA are higher 70% so out of our 412 kids over 70% uh or 80% are above that 3.0 GPI uh GPA so it's a real Testament to what our teachers are doing in the classroom along with these student athletes on the field 39 uh members of the class signed uh these are a variety of the schools that they sign with we added we did most of of them in a November Signing Day and then we did a second one in the
uh spring uh there was a few that we did not get to recognize um cam cheum who's going to Michigan State University for track uh Alise devella uh going to Northern Michigan for soccer Rachel Frasier is going to albian for tennis uh Jacob Gillespie Mach Community College for wrestling uh Madison clo uh University of try Mercy uh for lacrosse uh Alex Nunan uh clear University for wrestling uh LJ sabala uh Schoolcraft College for hockey uh Molly wolf uh cheer at Michigan State University uh we also got to do our senior recognition ceremony uh for 2324 pretty cool experience um so we got to honor our mhsa scholar athlete nominees uh we had six nominees uh we had one finalist so she was one of the top uh student athletes for out of I think they
select six in class A and she was one of the top 26 cam Herman uh also Kate McIntyre Morgan wayer uh Kaden custodio Jake Lewis and Brady Quinn on the men's side uh something new I did this year was I did a holl Heartland scholar athlete award so this went to the top student athlete and Scholar so they excelled both in sports and Athletics uh the winner was Kate McIntyre one of our phenomenal softball players also State uh and then one of our phenomenal lacrosse players Jacob Lewis another award that I added to the ceremon was the Heartland teammate of the year I think it's uh super important to recognize some of those kids that don't necessarily get the stats um but are key component to the team uh Jaylen knovich who was a captain
for basketball softball uh was the female uh winner this year uh and then Kaden uh custodio for football uh was the men's winner male athlete of the year nominees so we had three male athletes of the year that were nominated by our coaches uh Vinnie Abby a phenomenal wrestler uh played football also as well James butzer three sports athlete uh football wrestling uh and track and then Drew Lockwood uh did phenomenal things for us on the lacrosse field the winner is James butzer uh again this was voted on by the coaches and the coaching staff and James came in as the anonymous winner on this one uh and he had a phenomenal season great season I'm using phenomenal a lot sorry about that um but it was a great season for him in both football
uh wrestling making it to the states finishing in uh All State in that and then in track setting some uh school records in our relays for our track team uh female athlete of the Year nominees was cam Herman volleyball Aubrey Meyer double sport athlete um in girls basketball and track and field and Sam merard who was a three- sport athlete for sideline cheer competitive cheer and girls lacrosse the winner in this one was Sam Mard uh again the accomplishments in competitive cheer the past few years with districts regionals finished in the top four for the past two years uh what they've done also for girls acros uh was the key contributor in her becoming our female athlete of the year uh student achievement Student Success spring of 2024 uh boys lacrosse K West and Conference
champions Regional Champions State finalist uh girls lacrosse k West and Conference champions Regional Champions final four boys volleyball in their inaugural season were the district Champions uh girls soccer klaa west Champions district and Regional Champions State finalist uh Alis detillo was the Livingston County girls soccer athlete of the Year archery National and world champion in the 3D event uh they placed fourth in the bullseye event softball District Champions Regional Champions uh track and field had four individual and one Rel qualified for State four medalist at the state finals um cam chetam was the Livingston County track and field athlete of the year uh as for All State we had four track and field three boys and one girl All State athletes three boys lacrosse One softball and one girl soccer player that were all state
athletes which is a great accomplishment uh individual accomplishment chasing titles again Regional titles for lacrosse boys and girls lacrosse soccer um the district championships we have girl soccer up there on the left uh boys lacrosse uh girls lacrosse uh girls lacrosse on their way to State finals up there on the upper left uh coach Wagner holding up the district trophy for them um boys volleyball at their District Trophy and then Cham Cam cheum and his accomplishments at the state meet uh one of the cool things we did we kind of did this in the fall with wrestling a pinable moment this one I called in the park home run um kind of goes unnoticed I was at one of my K meetings and the uh ad for Howell had to mention that one of his
actually was Board of Ed member reached out to him that our softball team unbeknownst to anybody at our staff uh one of their coaches was going through some personal issues they had reached out to them after the game how we played the first game and it was a very beautiful gesture that our team and our coaches uh did for this coach and to support him in his um uh medical efforts that's going on and I thought it was really something that shows the the spirit of what our students are doing not only on the field but off the field one of the cool things I think that I always kind of when I sat in the interview is one of the big things is I harp on is promotion I want to be able to
promote our student athletes of all the successes so I went back and kind of looked at what we've done over the past the past year before we did 135,000 Impressions on just Facebook and this past year we were able to double that uh due to some great support from our uh Melanie call Cal who works in our uh does our uh website uh just the social media our coaches and presen and this was just Facebook this doesn't include Twitter and Instagram so I think it goes a testament to the community uh that is out there supporting our kids they're getting online they're seeing all these great things it's a testament to our coaches that they're sending the information and again it's a testament to what our kids are doing on the field of uh their
accomplishments here's a snapshot of everything we did last year fa I put it in one Fell Swoop since uh to wrap everything up six Kaa titles four Kaa Conference titles six mhsa District titles seven mhsa Regional titles six top four finishes seven top eight mhsa finishes three mhsaa state finalists three individual state titles One National Championship One World Championship 39 athletes to play in college 29 Allstate first team athletes and three all-americans so overall I was a great first year and again I do thank everybody for this opportunity to take this job as the athletic director I think um to support the student athletes the coaches and the community was a very special year and I look forward to more special years in the future roll call can't forget one last thing we were able
to host baseball districts boys volleyball districts boys lacrosse Regional this past spring um and again thanks to our facilities um the maintenance custodial for making some of the best facilities in the state for allowing us to do that um James fitzerald Tom urick who's not uh with the high school anymore uh JD wheer Jessica Gus phenomenal admin team I got a new administrative assistant Jennifer seag SOG who came in and did a phenomenal job it's going to be great here uh Mary retel Melanie Cal Deb Cadman Carrie rissy Carol Hayes uh again everybody in facilities custodial Transportation I think it's it's a top-notch staff from top to bottom that's it thank you so much Brian and uh good luck this year and uh you're you're just one of us now it's no more first year
right no all right go for it thank you thank [Applause] you Mt if you'd come up and do a bond update and capital Improvement projects I think you got a little bit of everything today right so we'll make this quick um just an update obviously we're in school so we got through our summer months um we did do the roofing replacement at the high school so that is complete um we're still working on this building on the auditorium um so that is about 95% complete there Creekside is complete and then Farms is complete uh the building 51 we're still working on the staff over there have been fabulous to to uh coordinate with us um we're kind of moving around so that we don't create too much noise um and we basically have about a
third of that Building completed as of right now um so we should hopefully be done in about two more weeks and be done with that part um the items we're still waiting on it's just some uh flashing around the the perimeter if you look on the edge of this building you see the rubber membrane um so they're just waiting on some metal um to show up and then they'll finish that part of the uh the roof on this building um High School the kids are parking on the parking lot that turned out wonderful nice and smooth when we do our snow plowing so we're not jumping all over with our our Plows in the winter time um so that turned out wonderful um we're still making some slight adjustments as we notice some water not
moving where we want it to um and that's normal for this big of a parking lot uh but that turned out wonderful uh huge Improvement uh mechanical upgrades that's a picture of the boilers over at Creekside so they're about 95% done with that um that is not critical to obviously being in school cuz we don't need the the the the heat yet um but that will be finish up the next two to three weeks uh in time for winter and then the Farm's rooftop is uh complete over there so lighting um over at rounds gym is complete um they've done some fine tuning uh what's nice about those is those are LED and diable for that fizzed teacher or whatever uh program they have going on the gym if they want to show movies and
things like that um so that has been programmed and finished over at that building um and then the tennis courts huge Improvement I was just talking to Brian earlier sounds like the tennis team had their first meet and lots of people were talking about how wonderful it is so huge improvement over there turned out wonderful um and we were able to recondition all the the older courts also so they're all looking pristine and new um these are just some things I thre in there uh as other summer maintenance projects that we've done over the summer um not Bond related but just part of General fund um we re did redo the gym over at farms as a a parent who has a student that plays High basketball a lot the kids could never find where
the out of bounds line was so they always went out of bounds and so we redid that and huge improvement over there um we redid the the music room uh carpeting down by the senior center which they love and we had to redo a section of flooring at Creekside just because the carpet was ripped and coming up and so we ended up doing that also um over at Creekside and then just throughout the summer we we do concrete replacement uh multiple buildings um we do look for local trades as much as possible when it comes to these projects as long as they can handle the volume that we do um but we redid the steps over at the high school we releveled the steps over on the uh northeast side where the students walk up
um we did uh you know sidewalk replacement over at Round in this building if you remember from the previous board meeting we had to fix a section out in front of our door um and then we actually uh replaced some playground equipment with Creekside and at Round um with the help of the PTO so thank you to those PTO that help fund raise for that and I actually forgot one we did replace some swings over at uh uh Farms with the help of um building funds those were not PTO funds but building funds from Crystal and and the district obviously but huge thank you to pto's for always helping out and updating our playgrounds so and that is all I have any questions yeah Matt just one question tell me that the DodgeBall is still
going to be okay for you know the lock in night still there okay good that's your answer right there not my deal now you can wear your gym shoes and tube socks and everything good yeah so good cool yeah thanks for the update great job Matt and uh please thank all of our um maintenance and custodial staff for the the fantastic job they did all summer long and preparing for that first day so greatly appreciate that from all right uh so ends the superintendent report thank you item one F called to the public um this is just a reminder that each speaker may be limited to 3 minutes um and we ask that speakers expresss in a civil manner with due respect for the dignity and privacy of others who may be affected by your
comments again if those in the audience choose to interrupt you will be asked to leave um at the 2 minute and 30 second Mark I will wave my handy dandy yellow folder um at 3 minutes you will be asked to step away from the podium Mrs tonkovich you are up first [Music] thank you once again I'm want to start this first 2425 season off with a prayer for all of you guys and for the teachers and for the children father God I come before you in jesus' name and I want to lift up each and every individual sitting at the semicircle I don't know where they are at in their relation relationship with you but I know that it is most important for the decisions that they make that they make righteous Godly decisions and
to do that they need a relationship with your son Jesus because what whatever that they decide to do they will fail eventually but with your help and your Holy Spirit directing them through a relationship and a changed heart they will succeed and Lord I just ask that they consider the fact for the children to be able to have the Ten Commandments back in there because there's nothing wrong with honoring your parents and not stealing and all the others that are listed in the Ten Commandments and most importantly to honoring God because whether anyone believes in God or not he believes in you he created you the way he did and father just bless them and let your Holy Spirit convict each and every one of them in jesus' name thank you next up we have
Kelly good evening making good decisions for the community means having good data so I wanted to share results from a Heartland Community survey conducted during cromaine library's 2023 strategic planning process question number five what do you think are the two or three most important overall issues facing the Heartland Community offered some valuable insights there were 1185 different issues mentioned by 571 participants their answers were spread across 29 categories like politics infrastructure and education two categories dominated the list accounting for 29% of the issues category with the most issues was politics so what are people concerned about 12% of the responses leaned right and I quote discrimination against conservative stances liberal ideology political movement LGBT community versus children 12% 27% of the responses weren't clearly left or right citing concerns around extreme political division and the
remaining 61% of responses leaned left and I quote concerns include a group of right-wing extremists taking over the schools anti-intellectualism and attempts to ban books and censorship 61% so I think your vote last month on the restroom policy not only aligns with the Constitution but it shows that you're listening to that 61% and I thank you for supporting the community the category with the second highest number of issues was diversity equity and inclusion 3% of responses sounded conservative citing concerns like and and I quote the mental emotional and spiritual abuse of children from the demented trans and gay evangelism minority Fringe groups attempting to impose their beliefs and the push for CRT ideology and materials 3% 14% of the responses were more neutral more around considerations with accessibility and then 83% of the responses leaned
left and I quote parents and Schoolboard members who want to eliminate diversity and inclusivity folks pushing for what they call Traditional Values and people are trying to silence specific communities like lgtbq and people of color this 83% really surprised me conservative voices are very boisterous at meetings like this but the survey data tells a different story residents here are saying they want more diversity more equity and more inclusion but where are the liberal voices maybe this survey response is the answer I have lived here for 30 years the level of fear of some families have now because of the non-acceptance of others is something I did not see 10 or 20 years ago the fear of speaking out is palpable now the oath as you sit on the board is to uphold the Constitution and
serve the Heartland Community I beg you to please keep listening even to the voices that aren't as loud thank you for your service next I have Jeff Scott good evening my name is Jeff Scott and I have three students in the Heartland Consolidated School District and I'm running for school board in November tonight I'd like to comment on two agenda items the superintendent evaluation process and the doj letter of agreement I'm happy to see that you are finally discussing the superintendent evaluation planning but I must point out to anyone who didn't notice school has already started so our superintendent starts another year with no goals and no measurable metrics the revised masb superintendent evaluation instrument which I assume you will be adopting tonight even though it's not technically on your agenda lays out an 11
to 12- month process that should have started by now you should have formalized the evaluation instrument the timeline key dates performance goals district-wide Improvement goals the student growth model that will be used the benchmarks checkpoints artifacts the processes for compiling the evaluation for conducting the evaluation and for for establishing a performance Improvement plan also the process for sharing the evaluation with the community unfortunately none of this was included in tonight's detailed agenda package do you plan on coming up with this on the Fly tonight or do we need to take another month or two before you start I feel like a broken record talking about this every meeting but unfortunately there seems to be some resistance to setting metrics and goals that are measurable in advance the community would like to know why no private
organization would allow this to occur can you imagine the CEO of a private company that did 80 to100 million in business not set any measurable metrics for their CEO as they start the year it would never happen meanwhile performance-based districts that do plan ahead are enrolling our students as Heartland enrollment plummets by nearly 10% in just a few years second the doj agreement you are discussing tonight I just want to remind the public that in 2022 under the leadership of President Costa Mr Hughes signed a letter of agreement with the doj without it ever hitting the board table for a vote I do commend president gach for upholding her promise to the community not to let that happen again but more than anything I think this District should have included the proposed agreement in tonight's
board package so that this community knows what you're talking about and has a chance to comment by hiding the agreement you are only deteriorating public trust I would like to also remind everyone that last July Mr Hughes addressed the community and asked for well over $200,000 to hire a doj Le aison citing the need to impress the doj obviously that didn't work too well and wonder if we can get our money back since the public has no idea what you're looking at tonight I guess all I can ask is that this Administration keeps the public better informed moving forward than you have with the previous doj agreement thank [Applause] you next up we have Ella nicotin hi my name is alen nikin I just want to really quickly say um you know if you um
if you have a problem with me that's like one thing please do not drag my family into into this into this that is not okay to send nasty text messages to my brother okay I want him to have a normal school year thank you next up we have Len Patilla hi there's a couple things I want to address surrounding Chuck Hughes in the coming election for a couple months preceding the 2022 election Chuck Hughes featured all of the liberal candidates in his weekly update letter and none of the Clean Slate members he then attended the recount in obvious support of only one member I met with Chuck in his office on Tuesday December 20th of 20122 which was about a month after the election I told Chuck that it was totally inappropriate for him to
have been involved in the election and that he should at least have given the appearance of being neutral and anything less is unacceptable I reminded him that he is sending the weekly superintendent update on taxpayers time using taxpayer resources and that we are hiring him to run a district and not a campaign his response was Len those are the candidates that I wanted to work with I told them the public doesn't care who you want it's your job as superintendent to work with whatever whatever board members the voters give you he said quote judging by the election results it didn't work anyway so from his response there's no question it was his intent to influence the election using District resources School District School District board members administrators and employees are required to abide by the
Michigan campaign Finance act it is very clear about what District employees can and cannot do School District employees May engage in campaign activities that support candidates and ballot proposals on their own time not when acting on behalf of the district as part of employment and as long as a St and as long as school district funds facilities and other resources including district emails and social media accounts are not used a school district official is prohibited from using School District resources or social media accounts to send a mass email Mass mailings or other Communications that expressly advocate for a candidate or ballot proposal Chuck has shown poor judgment by violating the ACT violating that act in the past election and it is up to the board to make sure it doesn't happen again I suggest a
review panel of one board member from each side to set up a review and approve the Weekly Newsletter before it is sent out to keep Chuck honest the second issue I want to address is Chuck's contract he has three years left on his current contract and the board should not even be considering any contract extension at this time these are uncertain Economic Times and the board should not be considering any contract extension which would settle the district with unnecessary liability Chuck has been with the district for a long time so he is not not a Flight Risk and he doesn't deserve any longer contract than any other administrator in the district thank [Applause] you Laura Moore welcome back to the school year um Laura Moore I'm a teacher for you have been for well this
is 22 years I told my mom that today and she was like oh god um so I just wanted to thank you um it looked like there was a large concerted effort by the board to attend our opening breakfast and that's really important to the entire staff it's really important that you hear us that you work with us and you set the tone for the district by showing up for us on the first day so I wanted to say thank you and I wanted to remind you while I have the mic for not going to be 3 minutes um that how you carry yourselves at those events it makes a difference for us we're looking at your very very public actions but obviously that's not the only thing that we see right we hear about
more private conversations um we see your volunteering around the community and we notice your online presence as well and so I just want to remind you that those things make a difference for us as well when you're setting the tone for the year thank [Applause] you and last we have Dave [Music] vanocker you got it right this time I'll get it one of these times all right that's all right I'm G to give you guys a break tonight on the pool I had some interesting things to bring up here besides that but we'll start with bringing up the Constitution again morality religion and education those are your three tasks we also talked about last time people perishing for a lack of knowledge and the important of your charge of educating I'll add one new idea
this week and that is the importance of the definition of truth I'm betting most of you actually don't know know what a definition of Truth is so I'm going to offer it up and it's very simple three words that which is so as educating our goal is to teach that which is all right now moving on something a little bit more interesting uh Mr gagal brought up about some changes in your Skype and your presentations and your meetings online I assume all of you have seen it the camera angle is a huge Improvement so I'm trying to be a little positive because sometimes people get tough on the board I've been on boards and I know how that works but I did make a couple of observations I'm encouraging you to experiment a little bit
and have some fun with it like Mrs blondel discussed the idea of you know the importance of emphasizing Eagles to me it might be interesting that clock is a bit of a problem but if you could move that sucker right between these two gentlemen here that would help to get your message out online that's nice but that's even better if you could move that over now I don't know what that thing is on the wall there so I don't know if that's going to be a functional problem but it puts your message front and center you guys might be cutting it off just a little bit but to give you a part of my background I I have a I got education all over the place but one of my areas is Art so I
understand composition a little bit so I'm passing that on to you if something to think about no pressure and just keep in mind too like when you move that behind Mr Costa there he's going to cut off a little bit of it probably with the camera but remember that you've got several points there and you'll get more of your marketing out there and look at it as how much marketing you get and not worrying about so much the little bit that maybe is getting cut off by how you sit and then a nice Eagle right there I thought about three but I'm thinking I don't know if you need that many or not so congr congratulations on the new camera angles nice work I'm trying to practice speaking without notes I don't like using notes
but I've not used to a three minute time frame I've done 15 minutes 20 minutes half hour and an hour three minutes has been challenging thank [Applause] you that concludes the call to the public item 1G committee and building reports I know committees are just getting kicked off and I'm not sure if any of you have been to your buildings yet but we'll give it a go Mr goes you want to kick us off sure thank you Megan um looking uh forward very uh much so to uh working with Legacy and also Community Ed as well and that's been an area that we've kind of overlooked a little bit so I'm excited to get in there and uh uh talk about some of the good works that those folks are doing awesome thank you Mrs
sha Mrs Coleman um let's see I've been assigned to round and Creekside so a little bit of getting back to my roots and a little bit of welcoming someone new to the district so thank you for those assignments Greg appreciated um I just want to say a quick congratulations to all the teachers and staff all of our groups um building secretary student nutrition um transportation everybody for a great start to the year um aside from a little hiccup at the high school today I think everything has gone really well thank you very much Mr Costa uh no I don't know anything yet I have not yet with uh M met with Mr Fitzgerald yet but I look forward to having some good conversation and and uh visit him up there so know I that's it
awesome Mr kellerer thank you Megan uh again appreciate everyone's participation in the the program I hope that we'll continue to make it a good uh experience for both the admin team as well as all the members of the board so thank you for your participation I do I don't have a building or committee report this month either but I do want to just recognize uh the teacher of the year Ethan Hawker and the support person of the year Sandy enderly both of you uh was great to uh hear your speeches at the uh breakfast this past week and congratulations to everything for everything you've done to support the the students and the parents and your fellow staff members throughout the year um I want to thank Mr Hassler for introducing the the new scholar athlete
Awards I think that's a great idea so appreciate your efforts to do that and highlight some of our great students here in the district thank you thank you Mr Keller Mrs blondal hi no we haven't had any uh committee meetings yet um I have lakes and I will set up a meeting to go see that I'm excited um and and Brian Hassler what a great uh thing you're doing in in tracking how much media is getting media attention so that's you're an excellent addition and congrats to all the students athletes um and way to represent Heartland um good job to the maintenance staff and Matt um you guys it looks like you did a ton of work and uh you did it without you know behind the scen so thank you very much and um
to the bus drivers I know it's tough job but you know we appreciate you getting our kids to and from school safely um and then thank you Barb tonkovich I love when you speak that's it thank you all right and I'm last uh I have Village this year it's my last year at Village as a parent I've been there for the past over 10 years so it's a little bit Bittersweet for me um but first week first uh couple of days of school went phenomenal I think you'll see many of the elementary schools um around in town are um participating in a mum sale and so the mum uh each Elementary School takes their orders but they're beautiful and they're actually much larger than you would think if you buy from a a fundraiser so
uh if you have any Elementary kiddos in your life reach out to them because I know they're selling mums um and other than that uh we are looking forward to another great year um and really just uh having some great things we have some uh new teachers there um you know some redesign of some of the rooms and so it's just it's going to be a great year that's all I have for Village all right and thank you Greg for getting all those assignments out and and trying to maintain some structure within our building um assignments all right item 2A HCS strategic plan I move that the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the board president will pursue a process for creation of a district strategic plan through masb consultant resources support motion by
Mrs Shaw supported by Mrs Coleman discussion yeah excuse me I I would like to just comment uh first of all I'm very supportive of us moving forward with a strategic plan so I'm happy to hear that we're considering doing that um the concerns I have with the the actual motion made is that we're having um we're utilizing or proposing masb which that in and of itself isn't the issue but I think looking at a company that has sort of been The Establishment kind of has a one-size fits-all approach for all districts you know including those at the top half and the bottom half I my preference would be to consider another opportun or another vendor potentially that may bring a different perspective than what we sort of had you know Michigan as a state we're
in kind of the bottom half when it comes to student proficiencies which I think is something that gives us another reason to want to kind of look outside and Branch away from maybe some of the more entrenched organizations that exist and I think just as a general Philosophy for the board I don't want us to to be sort of afraid to try something new I think we would never want to do that same or take that same approach with students right we want them to go out there and try new things and be afraid to fail that's how we're going to learn that's how we're going to get better and so you know respectfully ask the board to consider an an alternative vendor to masb thank you and I do um Mr Keller had asked
me to get on a call and we did receive a proposal from another Consulting Group um it is a significant difference from a financial uh commitment standpoint to upwards of just under I think between 55 and $60,000 um personally I want to ensure that you know ultimately we are responsible for Student Success um but we're also responsible from a state mde and structural standpoint which I think I want to make sure that is is personally want to make sure that is carried out as part of the strategic planning effort so the connection back to myip the connection back to those qualitative um scorecards even within our own state is important because ultimately that is also how we're graded as a top you know District within our state obviously we want to be a top District
within the nation um but it's important for me to connect it back to Michigan based um structural rubic rubrics um and then exceed those um and that's just my opinion I think after it gets conducted though I want to point out something and you know say we get a draft back I think that would be the point in time I guess where we take a look to ensure that it is truly carrying out our goals and I think quite frankly this will have to be reviewed every year because these will the Strategic plan will formulate the structuring goals for the future of the district but there's going to be times we have to Pivot we have to Pivot with the market we have to Pivot with academic success we have to Pivot with our results
right um and so I think that that's something that's going to have to be modified year after year after we even get that structure in place but that's just me so you and I Megan we had a lot of discussion about this I had the same concern same old you know and it's not a one-size withall which we know um in our discussion we we said that you know we don't have to take their stock lock and Barrel we can modify it as we see fit for Heartland um which I appreciate and um you know and we will review this every year or I won't be on the board but the board will review this every year um but again yeah I do feel that you know it's just a it's it's our only option
which is is disappointing that masb is our only option so um I just wish we didn't have to have it in there but I understand why you're keeping it in there I just I don't I don't support it 100% but thank you very much for having the discussion with me yeah I appreciate it um just to add to that too um what concerns me is the almost Monopoly that uh the masb has uh in terms of influencing school boards all over the state I am not a real big fan of the masb and I really am kind of leery of their emphasis on qualitative as opposed to quantitative data and that that's a big concern for me appreciate that any further discussion Mr Costa oh you're asking for my vote H yes yes Mr Keller
I'm a no Mrs one deal you know we need to start just have concerns in ASB um I know it's going to pass but I'm going to vote no at the moment Mr galeski no Mrs Shaw yes Mrs Coleman yes and I'm a yes that motion passes those efforts will start underway here shortly um and we can modify obviously as we see fit or as our district needs um and I know Michelle you and I talked about that so all right item 3A superintendent evaluation planning each of you um have respective committees um and drafted um goals that uh I had asked be more toward smart goals not necessarily um uh non-tangible goals um coming through for this year um we have several large projects that to need to come to completion um in addition
to that we do need to um take it back to our myip goals and make sure that we're reflecting that as part of these goals so please ensure that in those committees you're having the discussion um your making your recommendations that then come back to the whole board um as we uh in our updated training so the board recently took an updated training uh last month uh on the um New requirements for the superintendent evaluation and so um with that we have some informal updates that we will provide Chuck and I will gather your all feedback um and then we will look to have the mid-year review in January um so I will spend likely um between the December and January meeting garnering your feedback um getting those comments and then we will ask Mr
Hughes to present an update um in the January meeting to the public we will also look for an October is October November informal update and then likewise in the spring and then we will conclude at the um towards the end of the school year um in the same fashion that we did this year uh as part of that as well um we will have to redis our plan for training additional members we obviously know two members of our team today will not be returning to us and so whoever takes those seats will have to do that additional training um because that is required um other than that do you guys have any concerns about the January the informal meetings um I know we were all provided a rubric um and so we will use that
likewise okay item 3B superintendent contract um just an update there are some legal changes that we need to incorporate into the superintendent's contract um I have a note in Roy I hope to be able to meet with him this week and then I will get you all the contract for review um but regardless of whether or not the term has ex has expired or not there are some legalities that we do have to work out in that contract um and and that was obviously put into play after July 1 and so we will need to do that in addition I'm really trying to focus on ensuring that um the contract is clear and readable um and is written so that it's understod uh we had a lot of different compensation components some that weren't taken
some that were taken um and it wasn't very clear there was also no um incentive based payment it was um it was various other things kind of baked in and old school superintendent contracts and so I'm trying to condense that as well um so that there's incentive um for meeting District goals as well again as soon as I can meet with Roy to make make sure the legal components are in there I will get it to you all um and then obviously it will be available for the public before the next meeting so um I think is there three years left on the current contract or two CU I think you guys there was a two a fiveyear contract given I think two years ago how many how many years you have left three years
so three so I still I'm not super clear on why we continue to vote to extend something that already has an date three years out why are we why do we have to keep talking about this if he's got three more years if Mr Hughes has three more years on a current contract so we won't be extending we have to rewrite the contract this year the whole thing will be Rewritten well if we want to get to a point where it's actually readable to a to the to the normal eye um we do and we have to include those um those legal Clauses in there so the dis that we have to re align a contract regardless of the one-year extension or not so I just want to be clear about that that this year
okay and we have to do that before the next board comes in because it's such a short time right like the new board's going to be in and and we're going to be rewriting This and like you know my input is you know not as as great as somebody that's going to be coming in for the next six years so you know I guess I think that was an item that was voted on last we didn't vote on it last um meeting we as part of that policy change we didn't do the policy change right it was a policy I think yeah the policy change that didn't pass but I think we have the we have the opportunity it's not necessarily a policy but as a board we have the opportunity to time the discussion
right like is there something pressing that we need to do it right now well I do need to put those legal Clauses in yeah okay so it is it's a legal thing that you and I can get a deadline from Roy on that but I do need to update those Clauses in the contract okay and I but I'm to before that so I apologize if I'm cing off guard okay thank you y all right item 4A future meetings the next meeting is September 16th 6:30 p.m. right here in the boardroom item 4B does anyone have any informational items that they would like to share no but I I do have a request um I I can't remember who came up and talked about the the library survey um I'm a Heartland voter I didn't I
don't remember seeing one if somebody can I just want to see what it says I want to know what the question say so if there's some way that you can email the board or Mr Hughes or somebody so that we can just see because I'm very curious of what what the questions were and you know I in the outcome so if you could do that that would be great I appreciate it as a voter and a board member thank you thank you item five close session for legal consultation and the doj proposed ongoing monitoring agreement I move that the Board of Education meet in close session with its attorney to hear an update about the status of and the potential for accepting and entering into an extension of to the monitoring agreement with the US
Department of Justice for the which the matter remains open support motion by Mrs Coleman supported by Mr Costa any discussion I would just like to note that section 818 H and specifically the disclosure under Foya section 131g does permit us to go into close session today hearing none Mr Costa yes Mr Keller yes Mrs bondal yes Mr goleski yes um Mrs Shaw yes Mrs Coleman yes I'm a yes that motion passes just for the The public's knowledge we will be coming back to adjourn the meeting we will not be coming back to have any type of vote any type of discussion it will strictly be to adour the meeting um and so um you're certainly more than welcome to hang out we will likely close down this room um and and come back with us
to adjourn the meeting but I don't want you to think anything's happening because it's we're going to shut down this and we will shut down the YouTube um while we go into Clos session so just as an FYI there's no business after this for
