001Good evening everyone and welcome to the special board meeting for the Dearborn public schools. It's April 9th and it's 6:04. So, can we call the meeting to order? Roll call, please. Trustee Bazzi Here. Trustee Dombrowski Here. Trustee Mosallam Here. Trustee Pelichkov Here. Trustee Sobh Here. Trustee Zahar, here. President Elhady Here. Uh next item. Are there any blue cards, Ron? Uh we don't have any blue cards for the next item, Mr. President. Okay. Um So, we're going to call for um a closed session a call of an executive session to be closed. Um we need a motion for that. I move to move into closed session uh to discuss uh superintendent job applicants. Just a point of order, you got to do it with citing the section of the It's on here in the Oh, sorry.

002Sorry. I don't have Oh, sorry. Sorry. Just read that. Yeah. Yeah. So, I move to go to closed executive uh closed session to be held upon recess of this meeting to review superintendent candidates per section 8F of the Michigan Open Meeting Act. I second. All right. All in favor, say aye. No, this isn't a By point of order, this needs a two-thirds roll call. Roll call. Trustee Bazzi Yes. Trustee Dombrowski Yes. Trustee Mosallam Yes. Trustee Pelichkov Yes. Trustee Sobh Yes. Trustee Zahar, yes. President Elhady Yes. All right. We go into a session into [clears throat] a closed session. And let those in the audience know that we will return to an open session after. So, we will go into the closed session and we will return after we uh complete. Thanks, everyone. All right. We're

003going to call the meeting back to session. Um So, go ahead. Okay. So, just take a moment a couple minutes to explain again the process that we're undergoing. So, we went into closed session to review uh the confidential applications of those who um submitted applications for superintendency here in Dearborn. Um in closed session, your goal was >> Excuse me. Could you introduce yourself for the record, please? >> Certainly. John Silveri um with the Michigan Leadership Institute. I appreciate that. So, um we reviewed all the of the applicants, right? We shared the application materials and and reviewed every single person that applied for the position. You had 23 applications in all. You had the opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification. It was informational with the goal being to prepare to [cough] come out of closed session

004and for each of you to indicate which of those candidates you would like to invite to interview for the superintendency. To maintain their confidentiality, though, we have letter designations for each of the candidates, which you've seen. So, we'll go around, give each member of the board the opportunity to indicate which candidates they would like to interview by letter designation initially. We'll accept a motion. It can be seconded. There could be further discussion where we'll be careful not to reveal the identity of the candidates. Once there's a successful motion and you succe- you have um chosen those people that you would like to interview, um at that point we will go ahead and name those individuals and give their current position for the public record. Are there any questions about that whatsoever? Any clarification needed on

005that? No question from the board. I don't see any, so we'll go through the process. Okay. Okay. Um do you want to do It doesn't really matter to me which uh how we start. Maybe we start with Pat. Um Totally up to >> And then we just go this way. Uh My choices are A B C D and A D and E E A B C D and E That's correct. >> Thank you. Okay. We're just going to go around the Yeah, go ahead, Mary. I'm A B C E and G A B C E G. Thank you. You guys just give one short, right? Five? Huh? I just gave the ones that I wanted. Okay. I'm just making sure I'm not So, just just to clarify we can do however many you want. >>

006Yeah, you can do however many you want. Right. There's no minimum or maximum. Okay, great. Um A B C D Say that again, A B C D? Mhm. Um F and G Let me repeat that to make sure I got it. A B C D F and G Correct. Okay. Thank you. >> [cough] >> All right. Uh you want to go do you want to go? Yeah, go ahead. Okay. Um Mine is in no particular order. C A D G was That was G. >> Sorry. C C A as in apple Mhm. D as in dog B B Okay. Yeah. I'll stick with the four. Okay. So, A B C and D. Got you. Okay. Mine are uh B as in boy C as in Charlie D as in David F as in Frank, G

007as in George Thank you. Mine are uh A B C F G E A B C F G and E. Okay. Um candidates that I chose are A to interview. A C B That was B? Yeah. B like boy. >> you. Uh G K and F and F Yes. Okay. So, I'm going to tally these up. Okay. I'll I'll Okay. I'll repeat back to you. I'll let you know how how many by letter designation, how many board members named that person by letter. So, um two of the candidates received Seven of you named two of those candidates, B and C. Um six of you named candidate A. Five named candidate G. Four named candidates D and F. Three named E. And one named K. So, if we're looking to identify those that four or more

008of you named, it was A B C D F and G. Those are six. Right? Oh, five. There were six There were six that four or more of you named. >> Six. Yes. So, repeat that if you don't mind. I'd happy to. A B C D F and G. >> [snorts] >> How many did G have? G had five. And sorry, you counted D as five or sorry, four? D as in dog as four cuz I have it as I got four. Did you get a different number so you Okay. So, I'm I have four for D. Okay. So, I miscounted. Okay. No problem. Okay. Go ahead. Uh I'd like to make a motion to um uh approve for public interviews first round of public interviews candidates A B C D F and G. So

009moved. Is that F and G? Sorry, I was moving. So, you'll second, Trustee Pelichkov? Yeah. Okay. There's a question from Don. You said G >> I just want to make sure I got it. Uh I'll sure I'll I'll say it again just for clarity. I'd like to move for um public interview by us uh for the position of superintendent candidates A as in Apple, B as in Boy, C as in Charlie, D as in Delta, F as in Frank, G as in George. Thank you. Okay. And trusty Paselk you second it. >> I second it. >> Okay. So uh I'll call for So I Any discussions by the board on any of the names or anything without really talking about the names on the letters? >> [snorts] >> I don't see any. Oh, go ahead

010trusty So Yes, if everyone can offer some type of discussion so um we technically have deliberated in public um for the open meetings act. Um I'll do a general one because I think um it does fit these the these are the six that I um wanted or selected um so I can do a general blanket of, you know, I'm really impressed with the background um experience uh leadership um and really fits the needs of uh the school district at this time. So I think um these six candidates all have a lot to offer and especially to offer to us and so um I am really, you know, happy with this selection. And I just want to say and then trustees I will speak. We had 23 candidates and thank you trusty Soha for clarifying. And

011we spent several hours going in details on each one of them um with the help of you know, MLI and John and and and the team we were able to um without deliberating we were able to talk about um we have a binder which gives us all the information um on the candidate. But in saying that we had the information uh prior to coming to the board so we all spent considerable amount of time looking at them and assessing them and so we were prepared but at the same time we wanted some more information. There's some background information that was shared with us um on some of the candidates to help us make the right selection. So this um there was a lot of effort before the board and during the closed session. Uh trusty

012Zahra you I'll yield I'll yield to someone Oh, I'm sorry. No, go No, it's okay. I just wanted to add, you know, I think we came into this with an intention of a national search trying to find the best candidate um and I think [cough] that's that's what we got as the national results um and I think um you know, I appreciate the work that MLI uh did to get um this job description out there to as many people as possible so we can get qualified candidates and I think we um we did a good job in that. So thank you. Appreciate that. Thank you. Trusty Mosallam Thank you. Uh I also um like my colleagues did a lot of research since we got the profiles of all of the applicants prior to this meeting.

013And I divided all of the or did did some kind of scoring for myself uh into categories for example uh district relations uh leadership attributes instruction curriculum finances staff personnel and based on that scoring I'm happy to say that at least you know, five out of the six applicants that we selected were in my top six as well. So I'm I'm very happy with the result. Okay. Any any other trusty Yeah, there. Oh, who did who did that? Probably like a bully or something did that. >> [laughter] >> Um we uh as always in Dearborn I think we experienced this when um we had the vacancies for the appointments. Uh we are very lucky um a lot of very highly qualified people want this job. And um just like back when we were appointing someone

014I think once again in this instance we have sort of an embarrassment of riches. We have a great community. I think a lot of people know that and a lot of people want uh to be the leader here. So I think we're going to have I think the community will see that we have a lot of really strong candidates. Hopefully it'll be a spirited process that we're in and everyone will get to know them. Um but yes, uh I think the community should also feel uh secure. I can only speak for myself but I think I speak for everyone when I say we went through all of these applications um pretty vigorously and we just exited a uh very informative session where we uh were able to ask some deeper questions of MLI and got

015a lot of them answered. So even though we went into closed session for an hour and a half every maybe more everyone should know that um we we did a lot while we were in there and uh I'm very confident with the list that uh we have put forward and I'll be voting for it. Okay. You know, one last comment from my end is um there is this perception in the community that you know, the the jobs are already given or that we might be favoring someone or another but I could assure you I have faith in our board um and the trustees that this will be a fair process. And our goal is to pick the best candidate possible and we will not um as we did HFC, it will be a fair process.

016And we will not allow anything to deter us from having it be a fair process cuz at the end of the day those that are impacted are kids. And we will not um we will be fair. We will pick the right candidate. So in saying that if there's no other questions um we would do a roll call. So this roll call is on the motion to approve the six candidates as uh described below A B C D F G for public interviews for the position of superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools. A yes vote means that you would like to interview all these people. Trusty Bazzy Yes. Trusty D'Ambrosio Yes. Trusty Mosallam Yes. Trusty Pelichkoff Yes. Trusty Sobh Yes. Trusty Zahra yes. President Jechimi Yes. 7-0. All right. So I think um identifying the names Yes.

017So I'd be happy to do that for you. So in no particular order um Moussa Hamka who is currently the assistant superintendent of human resources for Grosse Pointe Public Schools Tracy Reed superintendent of Reynoldsburg City Schools in Reynoldsburg, Ohio Ali Hamka who is the assistant superintendent of human resources for Wald Lake Consolidated Schools Fatme Faraj who is your executive director of student achievement here in Dearborn Public Schools Mike Esseily the executive director of special populations Dearborn Public Schools and Thomas Aehart who is the former superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools in Des Moines, Iowa. That is your field of candidates. All right. Thank you so much. And they could let the press post the names. Just so you know then too in terms of process what we Sheila and I will be doing. We've

018got a little bit more business to take care of Yeah. to prep for first round interviews but as soon as the meeting's over we're going to grab a private space right here. We'll get on the phone. We'll be calling each of those six individuals to let them know that they've been selected and to get them on the interview schedule. Once that interview schedule is populated we'll share that with your folks so that you can post it wherever you would like to. These will be public interviews and so you can get the word out and people will know when they'll be taking place, what the order is and those who would like to be present will have that opportunity too. And if I could ask uh trusty Mosallam to talk about what the next steps based

019on I know he's been doing a great job working with you John and the team Yep. is it just maybe and and I I I didn't want to put you on No, no, it's okay. to talk about the the next step as John was talking about Yeah. So John already shared the suggested questions that we want to go over and possibly pick those questions um so we can ask those for our first interview um for first round interviews. The the the questions um there's 21 of them and I had a uh a question on that based on the time permitted for the candidates do we think that's a lot of questions? Do we think or are we how many how much are we how many are we choosing? Well so if if I may um

020that's based on experience. That that this is our typical protocol and I'm not There have been times boards have varied slightly from that but typically if if there's any variance it's because they become so enamored with some of the questions they want to overshoot the mark a little bit so we've permitted boards to go I think no higher than 24 but we find that in terms of the timing we permit up to 90 minutes for the interview so that includes some opening remarks from the board president um an introductory question 20 additional questions and opportunity then for the candidate to ask questions of the board at the end and make a final statement. And we're explicit with candidates when we communicate with them and tell them exactly what to expect so that they know um

021how to manage their time and then the burden is on them to make sure that they use their time wisely. Um in the event that a candidate might be flirting with running out of time um we'll communicate and have kind of a a to where we we'll watch the time for you, but we can alert you so that at some point we can interject and let the candidate know there's this much time left, this many questions left, and we may need to pick up the pace just a little bit. Good morning, Trustee Moser. Have you Just Just to take one step back so everyone understands >> Absolutely. our our our general the calendar we have kind of set for ourselves and Trustee Moser, if you can tell if we're still kind of on this. Which

022is to have two interviews per day next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. >> Correct. Okay. So, that's the 14th, 15th, and 16th of next week to have two interviews per day starting at 6:00 p.m. And that would be the six that we uh put forward. Um with the timing because um sometimes candidates uh run out of time. Sometimes they like finish way before time and they think they need the whole hour. >> Yep. So, have you guys ever done anything before where maybe we did this when we had the uh appointments? The Have you ever done anything before where you kind of have a timer on the screen, let's say, that they see the whole time? I I I will tell you there a couple of districts have done that, and I think that's beneficial if

023if you could arrange for that. Um that's going to enable the candidate to better monitor their time and kind of put the onus on them. So, they'll know how many questions are being asked. They can kind of track it themselves, and I do think it would be advantageous for the candidates to be able to watch their time a little bit more closely and make sure they stay within the 90, so. Yeah, and then we never have to remind them. It's in front of them the whole time. I I I think that would be fantastic if you could do that. I I'd like to see us do that. I don't know if we have to make a motion or >> a good idea. Um Trustee I agree. I agree. So, yeah. Yeah. I think And I

024know we can do it cuz we did it for the uh appointments. They just can just put it on the screen there. That would be great. >> It's the same thing they do for the 3 minutes. So So, um Right. >> [clears throat] >> Oh, they do. Okay. On the questions, are are we good with the questions? Is uh Well, do we want to ask the 21 questions that were suggested, or if you feel strongly about any question that you want to remove or add to the suggested questions? >> Well, you have We have a lot of them. I actually you have double that. You have You have 42 questions that we we shared with you, and the goal now is to narrow that down. So, we're not going to talk about the questions aloud.

025That's the reason we gave them to you ahead of time so you can kind of preview them and get an idea of what they were. Right now though, what I'd like to do is walk through one category at a time, and then you you can all talk about that just by number, and anybody could start. Doesn't have to be a vote. But we'll just try to reach consensus. So, somebody wants to start, for example, on opening questions. If you've taken a look and you have a preference of which of those three you'd like to ask, you can start the dialogue by putting those out there. We can see how others feel. And the goal is to reach consensus on three within each category. So, three within each category? >> Yes. Okay. Does everybody have a

026question in front of them? They're in tab in your binder, the big binder that I just gave you. If you go to tab four, Tab four. you'll see them. Just a point of order, Joanne Harris is complaining once again that she doesn't have a copy of anything. She can have mine cuz I I printed the questions. Oh, there we go. >> [laughter] >> I was going to give her mine. I printed and I circled. No, I'm I'm I'm using my soft copy. There we go. Okay. >> [laughter] >> Now, I I will say this for opening questions, we always go with number one. Okay. Yeah, I was going to say one and I've got that one, sir. So, really then the remaining five, you'll need to pick two of those. I like one and three

027for opening questions. This is one. >> let's let's just start with the the So, the introduction, okay. Uh any comments? I know Mary, what were you saying? Sorry. Question >> No, I was going into the opening questions. The introductions I don't have anything to discuss, do they? We need to choose three questions from each category. Yeah. Three from each category. The opening question is the first section, which has six questions. Any thoughts anybody wants to >> Yeah. And that's what I was talking about. I had one, three, and six Three and six. >> that I that I uh was interested in. Yeah, I'm okay with one, two, or three and one, three, and six, too. I like the specificity of two and three, but two and three are kind of not that different from each

028other. >> Right, there's a lot of them that there's overlap. So, I'm good with one, three, and six like Trustee Peluso. I'm okay. Could I I'll move that we're going to that we ask questions one, three, and six. We don't necessarily need to take a formal vote, but >> No. Oh, you don't want to? No. We don't need to. Okay. But you're Sounds like you're suggesting that we go with those Just a majority vote, but whatever. But that's okay. I I am okay with one, three, and six as well. Same. So, then It seem like we got a consensus on that. So, Right. let's move on to the next item, which is uh is it political awareness? No, district Sorry, district relations. District relations. >> District relations. So, any any suggestions? Go ahead, Trustee My

029suggestions were one, four, and six for district relations. One, four, and six. Any thoughts from anybody? Um I'll double down on one and six. Yeah, I had one, two, and six. >> I had one Two is my other one as well. One, two, six. >> So, we agree on one and six, it seem like. Yeah, I had question two as well, but it's not that much different than question four, but I had question two. Um Mary, would you be okay with the us going with number two? One and six, one, two, and six. Yeah. Um It's kind of going into granular level providing an example. Yeah, the the reason I thought number four was important was because it um it it's more specific. It It It It It is detailed into some of I'm trying

030not to >> [laughter] >> Thank you. I know I can tell. I know I know how to do this. I appreciate it. Uh but but it um it speaks to something that everybody has a question about when you if you read the question because we always talk about some of this. Where the other one is kind of more um All right, I have a suggestion if it's okay with everybody cuz I I kind of agree. So, I think this is not giving away anything. So, would you be open or sorry, would people be open to doing a question that's like a mix of them that says Don't read it. Yeah. That That That blends two and four? Yeah, that asks the Okay, that asks the uh person to give the uh specificity in the first

031few words of two, but in the subject matter of four. Does that make sense? Um I can take a shot at that, sure. Yeah, cuz I think I understand what Trustee Peluso is saying. Trustee Peluso and I understand what everyone else is saying about two. It's asking like a direct example. Uh example. There's nothing wrong with saying that. It's like asking somebody to give a direct example. But but it's in a much It's much more general than four. That was That was your point, right? So, maybe That's what I meant by blending. Okay. I I will take a shot at that. So, they'll take a shot at it, but we have to be okay, you know, with what they come up with. Well, we have a meeting Monday, so. No, I mean it can be

032sent to us again. I I don't want us to go through this again. Sure. Well, I will I will tell you what I'll do after all of this. I'm I'm going to put all of this together. I can send it to you, and if it would be beneficial for you to get this prior to Monday in case there's a need for further discussion, then you could check out how I blended and if you're not thrilled with it. Yeah, only four only four questions that we're asking you that are not on this thing. Right. Right. >> Yeah, like which so far is just that one. Okay. All right. So, then the next one, which is um political awareness. So, any suggestions? I'm [clears throat] one, four, and six. You said one, four, and six. I think

033they arranged these on here so that >> [laughter] >> There's a pattern. It's like taking one of those tests where if you aid on these ones and I like four and six. Um I had two, four, and six. I had one, four, and six. Okay. So, I'd like that. Oh, sorry. What's that? I just want to ask my colleagues to look at number three. Just I mean, do you think you know, thinking about just you know, the world we live in, is this a question that we want >> Yeah, but you know, we're going to have another opportunity Okay. at some point, and I would rather get the basic feel for these individuals and how they would operate in the broader um picture. Then I'm okay with Trustee D'Ambrosio's suggestion of one, four, and six.

034So, That's fine, too. Right. Are we good with that? Okay. All right. We We are good with that. And then the next one is the leader uh leadership. The next one, I definitely like number two. I like one and five. I'm okay with two. So, uh Yeah. Trustee D'Ambrosio, what numbers did you say? I He's number two, which I like, too, and one and five. Yeah, okay with one, two, and five. One, one, two, and five. Um I like one, two, and five as well. Do you guys agree? We're good. Yeah, that's fine. Let's move on to instructional and uh instruction and curriculum. So, here I really liked one and four. >> Go ahead. Here I really liked one and four. One and four? I think they apply to us a lot. All right. Who

035Who else? I liked four as well. Um but I also would like number six if possible. I agree with number six. Yeah. Number six? Um any thoughts from this side? I agree. So, uh would it be one, four, and six? Correct. All right. Let's go with that. Okay, just do one, four, and six. >> [laughter] >> Is that what we're doing? It's a pattern. They're good questions. Um uh let's go to the next uh grouping, which is finance. I did one, two, and one, two, and six. One, two, and six? So, I think we should ask number five. Um I agree. Pretty pertinent question. Yeah. Yeah. Uh I had one, three, and five. >> for six, we already asked that question before. So, one, three, five? >> In a previous category. >> Yeah, I I

036I don't have I don't have uh So, you want to lose six this time? Yeah, one, two, and So, we defeat question six. >> Yeah, they don't like it. So, so Pres- Pres- let's let's take a step back. Pres- Pres- what did you say? One, two, and five. One, two, and Yeah, I'm good with that. Anybody else one, two, and five? All right. Uh I'm looking around. It seem like we're okay with that. All right. So, let's go on to the next category, which is staff and uh personnel. Any any suggestions? So, I like five and six. Other than that, I'm open to other ones. >> Five and six? Anybody else making a suggestion? Six, I feel like is important. What was that? Six is important. Yep. Um Yeah, that's it. Uh let's do one

037then, because that gives an an overall So, one, five, and six? Yeah. Yeah, one, five, and six. I I I really like two. Uh Is that two, number two? Yeah. Um I mean, two is one, two. I'm okay with two. It's similar to one, I mean. Okay. So, let let's recap. And I'm okay. I I read a a little more, and it could apply to other things, so I Yeah, yeah, you just want to make sure that you touch upon the fact cuz the responsibility and role of a superintendent, number one, really Yes. Actually, can you blend number one and can you try to blend number one and two somehow? They are both important, I think. Um I'll give it a shot, sure. Yeah. Blend one and two, but five and six, I think Okay.

038You definitely need So, we're in agreement. Uh blend one and two, and um five and six. Yep. Is that good? Okay. So, this is going good. And let's go to the next item, which is uh which is really that's it. That's the notice. There's no other decisions to be made regarding questions for now. >> Okay. Um we'll talk about second round questions at the meeting where you select finalists, so we'll do that first, and then we'll have further dialogue about second round, including second round questions. Second round questions. And then Mr. Silvery, we are still on the idea of holding three interviews next week, 14, 15, 16, and then selecting the finalist on the 18th? Yes. Is that which is a Saturday at 11:00 a.m.? Yes, correct. >> Okay. Yep. Any Go ahead, Trustee Bazzi.

039I also had a question about the the schedule. Um we selected April Friday, April 24th for our finalist interviews, and then there's a 10-day gap between that and we select the superintendent. Is that typical? Um well, there in this business, I don't know that there is any typical. It really varies from board to board. A lot of it, honestly, it just depends on um your calendar, your personal obligations and responsibilities. If the question is, is it possible to move that up? Could we move it up? If it would work for everyone. Move which one up? Yeah, I think He's talking about May 4th, where you make the selection of the superintendent. The point is that there's a a gap between um the finalist interviews and May 4th. I mean, I'd be in favor of moving

040up April 24th a day or two, cuz there's a a lot of events on that day. Is there a reason that we did it on the 24th and not No, I think No, that's because you have the meeting for you on the 22nd, 23rd. Oh, is that Is that what it is? So, can I Can I interject then on that one? This might help with that discussion. Um we recently did another search So, we were faced with the challenge of them selecting a a schedule that accommodated two finalists, but then we had to accommodate three. So, to make a long story short, um rather than separate these out different days for different finalists, we put them all together. So, what we really could do, if you wanted to, was on the 22nd and 23rd, we

041could combine, and the benefit of that is that So, we'd have whether it's two or three finalists, we could make it work, but you'd have them in the district at the same time. All of these things would be happening concurrently. Where it really works out well, I'll talk about the stakeholder groups. Remember, that is inviting various stakeholder groups to come in, submit questions, hear responses. The way it currently stands is they'd have to do it twice for each candidate each candidate, separate days. Which is a bit of a burden, right? So, if we were to combine that to where uh I'll use your staff members as an example. So, they would come in, we would have one of the candidates come in for a period of time, and then while those staff members are still

042present, we would have the other candidate also come in, and they could ask questions, and we would dismiss that group, we'd bring another group in, same thing. We'd have both candidates on site. One would come in for the first half, the other would come in for the second half. Then your folks, your stakeholders, only have to come in once for those activities. So, it could be advantageous. So, what we could do is restructure that. So, on the 22nd, what we would likely do, and Sheila help me if I'm not getting this correct, but we could do in the morning the district tours, for example. In the afternoon, we could do the finalist question and answer sessions with stakeholders. On the 23rd, we could have the meet and greet prior to interviews, and then you can

043go into second round interviews on Thursday the 24th at the 23rd, rather. Okay, so that's assum- So, this is assuming hypothetically there's, let's say, two finalists. Well, we made it work with three finalists, sure, doing it that way. >> but let's say there's two, so they would both be here both You're assum- You're assuming all the finalists, whether there's two or three, would be here for both of those days, and then interview on the end of the second day. That's correct. Yeah. I I think the the question on could [clears throat] we move it earlier on The selection >> The selec- the selection. Um I think at the end of the day, and and uh me, Trustee Bazzi, might have talked, is at the end of the day, it's the board's decision. If we need

044to do a special meeting to to to make it earlier, it's within our discretion based on the availability. So, it's that date is not So, if we finish the finalist interview, and we decide that we want to do it sooner, I don't think there's anything that would restrict us from doing that. Yeah, I don't think we have to decide that now, either. Yeah. So, that's why I said I don't think it's it needs to be decided, but I think I'm okay. I I'm actually in agreement of doing it sooner, but I think it's our discretion based on how we see things at that time. I Sure, but I'm talking about the Yes, I agree. But I'm But what I was talking about, so that we don't so that I'm not confused, is the finalist interviews

045of when he's talking about they're going to be here for the I was talking about moving that from the 24th to the 23rd. Cuz I'm >> Well, wait a minute. I I can't do the 22nd. Yeah, the 22nd, 23rd. >> 22nd. 23rd, 23rd. Well, he's talking about 22nd and 23rd now. >> So, let I'll I'll clarify. On the 22nd, you wouldn't be involved. 20- This 22nd would involve the candidates and your stakeholders, you wouldn't be involved. Um on the 23rd, we're talking about moving the the finalist interviews to that date. >> Oh, to that day instead of >> Instead of that Friday, the 24th. Just cuz there's an access dinner that night, it's like and it's a Friday. Yeah. >> And Sheila just made a suggestion, which I think, you know, we'll toss it out

046there. You've already We already have Friday, the 24th, booked, right? That's scheduled. If we were to move the other activities up in the way we just described to the 22nd and 23rd, with the final interviews being the last step on the 23rd, if you wanted to keep that 24th date and use that as the night that you make the decision, that does not give you a lot of time to deliberate in between. The 23rd, there's an event. Okay. >> A lot of us are going to be So, we're looking to avoid the 24th, if we can. I got you. I guess I'm hoping to to schedule that and decide on it tonight, because otherwise it's ambiguous. Can we do the Saturday? You mean the final deliberation? Mhm. The final selection. I mean, I'm I'm of

047the opinion that if we're interviewing people on the 22nd and the 23rd and the community is going to watch that and they might want to give us feedback. I don't think we should be picking someone within 48 hours. That's just my my opinion. So trusty Bazzi, what's your suggestion? I mean what >> That Monday or Tuesday. The 20th The 27th or 28th. >> The 28th would be good. >> Is that the the 8th? Oh, is it? We have the asset dinner any of us who were in April. I know 27th. No, I think it's the 24th that actually works. No, no, it was the 27th. So You guys are saying two different things. Access asset of May. Asset. I'm not doing access. I'm saying asset. >> I I I I I I I I I

048I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got you. All right, so >> So the 28th would be Would be What would be would be the 29th teacher? >> But the 28th the 29th we have teacher of the year and the 30th we have superintendent honors night. >> Right. Okay, so But te- teacher in case people want the 29th the teacher of the year thing ends at 6:00 p.m. According to our schedule. Yes. So I mean the 29th is an option. It's not an evening event. I'd be okay with the 29th. I just I just want to give to me me personally I'm okay with doing it like 5 6 days after. That's fine.

049I just We're interviewing people on the on the 23rd and we want to get as much feedback I don't know. So I'm not okay with the 28th but 29th is a better whatever. So so what's the recommend? What's everyone is available on it? Is it the 20th? Plus if we're all going to the teacher of the year thing, you know, we just go there and then we come here. Instead of two days. >> On the 29th. So when we're asking about feedback, are we we're I'm assuming we're going to have a forum. People are going to fill this out and what's the typical feedback time that you guys go with? Um People are going to have the opportunity to watch this watch a recording of the of the interviews and respond and give feedback to

050those, right? So you want enough time then and you want to be clear with people what that is if you want to have enough time to have those out there for people who weren't present but still to watch and give feedback. You would want to have at least if you're if we're now if if we were to move the finalist interviews to the 23rd Thursday the 23rd I would say if you are now meeting the following week sometime like the 29th that would be adequate time for people to get feedback and more importantly for you to consider their feedback. That's the most important part, right? But it should give enough time for that if you moved it up to that week. Does the 29th work for everyone? I guess yeah, we can run from the

051awards. Let's make it 6:30 so we have a buffer. Yes, yes, oh. I'm sorry. Um If you do the 29th the teacher of the year our crews our equipment is there. Oh. Oh. It would take us at least we would need at least two hours. Okay, forget it. Oh, heck no. >> [laughter] >> And then ready to roll. Okay. So Um So that that's a consideration. I mean there I we could explore some other >> No, we we we we understand. We'll we'll find another day. Let's do the 28th. >> The first >> no. The the 29th is we have we have something. That's what he's talking about. >> No, no, I I I 28th you said she had something. No, 28th is good for me. >> Okay. I mean I would prefer [clears throat]

052May 1st but whatever. I I just like to >> 28th is fine. Okay, so I have to interject. Neither of us is available on on the 28th. Okay, May 1st. Does May 1st work? >> May 1st and 2nd is the MASB conference and I know at least two of us are going. Okay. And we're back. >> May 4th. Well, maybe we maybe we just stick with May 4th, right? That's in the books and Yeah, trusty Bazzi, we're leaving April. >> was why we chose Well, I go Well, I guess it's May 4th. I guess so May 4th. That is seriously that might have been the reason as we looked at these dates. >> have done this already. All right, so so let's stick with the 4th and if anything changes it's it's the board's discretion.

053Right, we could revisit it if we needed to. So can I go back then and ask how are you comfortable if we modify this so that again we use the 22nd and 23rd as the dates where we do the Q&A's district tours meet and greet and then the night of the 23rd would be finalist interviews? Um just hypothetically though, let's say we um Did you say no? Oh. Right. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Let's let's let's say let's say hypothetically like how would you deal with that though if there was three people? Would you interview one of them on the 22nd? Um But I thought somebody said they can't do that. I I What we did What we did in in the other instance recently was we shortened the interviews slightly. Okay. Normally they're 80 minutes long.

054I think we we shrank them down was it 75 70 minutes? So you did three in one night. Okay. So it that's it can be a little bit extensive but when you think about the difference between three interviews at 70 minutes each versus two interviews at 90 minutes each Sure. It's longer but not terribly longer. So we think you could manage it if you needed to. In the other example we gave it seemed to work pretty well. Okay. >> So what time would they be finished the the the last candidate? Um so if we were to start at What what time? 6:00. >> 6:00. Um at 70 minutes each who's good at math better than me? We'd be out of here by >> [laughter] >> We'd be out by 9:00. No, no, more than that.

055With three candidates? 230 minutes including two 10-minute breaks. Start 9:30. >> 9:30. 9:30. I mean it's already 9:00 now. We've been here since 6:00. Well, exactly. I mean honestly I think it's doable. >> So 10:00 is probably the to set the expectation possibly. I mean I'd rather come here for one night than two nights. Right. Even if we have three candidates. So So if if we're okay with that doing the just to move things along. Are we okay with the 23rd and having a long night three interviews? If we have three. If we have two it'll be Sure. Well, I'm going based on the the the high end worst case scenario. So are we okay with that? I'm okay. >> Yeah. So um I think that's the plan. Okay, wonderful. >> three interviews And the

0564th will we will deliberate. I'm sorry, yeah. Make a decision. >> Make a decision. Okay. All right. >> Then the only other thing to add I know it's late. I'll just quickly tell you so you know exactly what to expect next week. So we will be putting the interview questions together. We'll have six sets of interview questions one for each of the candidates. They'll all look the same except the name of the candidate will be different in each obviously. There's going to be a lot of space between questions to give you a lot of room to write notes. We'll get them to you in a binder so when you come here Tuesday for the interviews, we'll have that. You don't have to copy anything prepare anything. We will have that here for you. Um and

057then you'll just bring that back each night and continue to add to it with each of the candidates. I will get that to you in advance so you can preview it and I will what I typically do tell me if you have an objection. Um you're responsible So for example one of the categories is finance. You don't have to be a finance whiz to ask the finance questions. It's literally just asking the questions that are in front of you, right? So if you're okay with it, we'll just kind of randomly assign each of you a category and you'll ask the three questions in that category. We'll just go around the table. Is that okay? Yeah. I think that's fine. Okay. All right. Any other thing? Trusty I have two separate points. Sorry. Going back to

058this time thing because I think math was not mathing. We would be done at 10:00. And just so everybody knows if we start at 6:00 it take it'll take us four full hours to do this. Yeah. If we have three. If we need to push if we decide to push to Friday we would I got to go back there. We already had that planned maybe. Just to keep it in mind. The second one was the combination of questions going back to that earlier. I think there were [clears throat] two sets of questions we asked to combine. The first set I just don't see how we can combine them without you know keep with by in in keep the integrity or the the intent of the question. Can you if you in your attempt to combine

059both sets can you also provide us the original questions as an option for us to accept 23 questions instead of 21 questions? Yes. Thank you. Absolutely. Yeah. And I frankly I mean if I make an attempt to to blend the questions and it looks like they're not blending terribly well, I'll just include both and as I said we in the past the goal is always 21 questions. We've gone as high as 24 but as long as the candidates know in advance they'll manage it and it'll it'll be fine. Okay, thank you. Okay. Thank you. >> that. Any other comments? See none. I think we're all set and no any other business meeting is adjourned.
