Hope you please call the role. >> Mr. here. >> Here >> thank you. Um, we have meeting minutes from our January 12th uh, regular board meeting and workshop minutes from our January 26th meeting in our packets tonight. move that the board of education approve the cash
meeting minutes from January 12, 2026 and the workshop minutes from January 6, 2026 as >> I'll second that. >> We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? All those in favor of approving the meeting minutes from January 12th and 26th as presented, please say I. I. >> Any opposed? Okay. Um, board policy provides that the superintendent of schools shall prepare an agenda for all board meetings as directed by the governor of the board of education. Do we have a motion? >> Move that the board of education approve the agenda as presented. >> I'll second. >> We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? All those in favor of approving the agenda as presented, please say I. I. >> Any opposed? >> Okay, moving on to school presentations. Um it is we just finished
board of education recognition month. >> Yes. A full month. >> Yes. Yeah. Workshop. You didn't have to look at but thank you for all your students. Thankful. >> Thank you. Thank you all. >> Thank you very much. Appreciate you again. >> Banner in the hall. There's flowers for you to take. There are baked goods from our students at Dexter High School class packages from the deck card from a few building. But just wanted to show you all >> and then there >> and also we have books being passed around that stack of books. Um the DEA uh buys a book for each school every year um in honor of formation month and they're being passed around so you can see what books are going to each school. >> Thank you very much to the district
for all of the work of the students. They are the notes are so sweet. So and I got a chance to read all these paperwork started. So you guys should go. >> They're very cute. And I was rocking the backpack at the How invitation for wrestling school wrestling. I got so many comments on it. >> Thank you very much. All right. Uh moving on to our first opportunity for public participation. Um the we have two periods of public participation in each meeting and the first opportunity um is right now. Is there anyone who'd like to address the board? Okay, moving on to our administrative and board updates. We will start with super >> and Saturday was an exciting day. powering close to their always trying to beat their own personal record. And then uh then
Saturday night was the ABC7. Today we had and I know we'll have our student but our students did have a walk out with most of their parents scoot them um and uh protest me historically And as school schools in general students do not their constitutional right to talk to the schools. So they have a right to free speech free expression and constitutional rights that they can exercise disruptive the education process goes to school. I sent out something parents are generally no matter what the topic is what we generally do is make sure that it least disruptive school day as possible. to make sure that people get this on students website and our staff does not engage. So it went exactly how many protests even any kind of demonstrations students have said their rights is one
thing to keep into consideration doing this for so long. There are times that the topics that always there's always someone who agrees to disagree and in schools our job is to teach our kids how to have civil discourse and they may may not agree. in that they may disagree, they may agree civil discourse and our kids. >> The only things I would ask this weekend was we had unified and athletics on Friday. We had basketball at the elementary and middle school level evening the middle school and high school level participate debuts which I know a lot of folks that came to see was made very fun. Uh it's great to see a middle school and high school production. We're gearing up for professional development this Friday weekend. We'll be here on Friday working. So Melody
and working in final plans. Uh and then kind of ending on a great note, uh Brett Penderson at Mil Creek CC on an email that we got from the Howell athletic department, uh and specifically their ad said just wanted to give the rest of the team a huge compliment that after the meeting, our kids went and asked him to get garbage bags they could help clean up. And our Dexter kids stayed back at how wrestling me all the trash. It's like he said and he said, "I've never seen that." >> He goes, "I haven't given my own kids clean the trash. Your kids picked up the trash at our site." So, it's really cool to get a note from their ad celebrating how wonderful program. Very cool. >> That's fantastic. That's really great. Um, I
just have one note to point out to the board. Maybe you saw in your emails from the WASB, they do have a call for volunteers for the nominating committee for the WASB um uh leadership group. Dan did it last year. Um and so if you are interested, feel free to respond to the email because they are putting together that nominating committee who will put four names and the new slate will be elected in March. So just wanted to highlight that in case you're interested. Um and then moving on to our student representatives more exciting news on Friday night it was state night. Um and a lot of high school clubs were able to join in that too. Um women science had a crew and we did sever microscopes. Ocean had their own station robotics station.
Um it was like a little bit of a slow start but a ton of people ended up coming in. It was great to see all these kids interested in science or getting kids interested in science that might be a little hesitant. Um, but it was a great way to connect with the community. Dance also did a great job at nationals. They actually placed first in their game performance. So, national champions. Um, they definitely deserve it. They worked so hard all year. And I mean, as you can see from their football performances, they're very, very good. Um, as mentioned, drama, but that was not one weekend affair. So, if you haven't seen it, you can come up next weekend and see um the middle school or the high school. Um recently, career fair schedules are sent
out to students and initially there were some worries because it didn't exact look like what kids had put down, but they actually addressed it very very quickly. I think within 15 minutes an email was sent out that it was going to be fixed and I think within a couple days um it's got a new schedule. So, it's scheduled very well. Um and it it felt good that problems were just complete students. So I would >> yeah also the weekend uh forensics team for some time the Lancasters coached us amazing success at port central on the board of schools. Um but we placed second there out of small schools I think we had five to seven kids go. Um one of our students won fourth in their category. the other our duo commentary six out of
four. So very very good. Um we touched on the powerlifting meet their wrestling meets. Um they have an orchestra and choir I believe at solo non weekends back which come later. It's like an opportunity for students to test their musicianship skills judge. It's always a good time for it. uh people walk out. Now, there was blackout today, Dexter High School following protest that march against downtown Dexter. Um I think Dr. Tims touched on it very well. It was completely peaceful. There were people who disagreed with the idea of the protest, but I was very very proud of all the students who were there. They did not engage. They smile and wave. I see it's a good showing. I would like to spend my deepest day to deputy board and entire team behind that school resource
officer at high school and he was incredibly helpful in making sure students could house us um roads. We had maybe four or five patrol cars following that march all day and just being visible to make sure any bad actors could not cause a problem. Um I very happy that students were able to exercise their right of free speech. Um, on some more forward oriented news, Claire and I last week met with the admin at DHS to discuss strengthening that student communication talked about last meeting. Um, we shared with them our form that we plan to send out to the students via posters from school and during our advisory period and we also discussed potentially having video advisory. So yeah, uh hopefully by the next time we have our meeting, I think we have an advisory
committee that high school before that we will have a whole list of updates and should give us more of everything because Claire and I sometimes just have to use our best judgment because we do not know everything as we like it. So um that's great. Thank you for the updates. So those are that gave us a really good overview. Let's move on to the items. We have uh personal personnel retirements and the December budget retirement. I'll move for the board of education. We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? Okay. Uh, all those in favor of approving the consent items, please say I. >> I. Any opposed? Moving on to our action items. Um, first up we have um policy 4305, which should have been rescended when we replaced it with policy 413. Um
and this uh policy was changed due change law board of education policy 4305 retroactive 2019. >> We have a motion and a second. Any questions on this? It was simply a replacement policy that we already added in. Um, okay. Since this is action item, let's do a roll, please. >> Mr. Hi. >> Hi. >> Um, next up we have some policies. Next up, we have some policies um that are here for second reading tonight. Um 3308 advertising and 5501 fundraising. These were approved for first reading on January 12th, 2026. >> I'm with the board of education approve policies 33081 and second reading and final >> second. We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? Okay, seeing none, we can move on to voting. >> I miss >> I >> Mr. Al. >> Um, our
last action item tonight is the DHS CPA drapes. Um, our packet includes a bid summary and a recommendation from rancher regarding replacement of the center for perform performing arts drapes. Can we get a motion first? I move that the board of education award the CPA drapes project to your host studios for $45,000 with a 15% contingency of 6750 for a total amount not to exceed 51,750 to be paid with the 2017 bond. >> Second. >> Okay, we have a motion and a second discussion. We acquired this in the 2017 B to replace there from the original building. The general stage layout is you have quarters on the side. You have scripts that go across and then you have your travelers. On this exact plan, um it has legs, borders, It has legs borders and script
and six. So that's why it's not just accommodations that are made for our stage style. probably won't have to do it again. But they're long, too. You know, if it's 80 ft across, it's 160. >> Yeah. I appreciate that. It's expensive. >> Yeah. When I first saw it, little bit of research. >> So there's four or five way there's there are legs I think there's eight and then there's travel script and then six When you look at it, it looks fine from afar. >> Any other questions? Just to give you a heads up, you probably have a package replace. >> And is that in the current bond? Okay. >> Is this the end? Have we In terms of the 2017, have we approved everything to finish that bond out? Not yet. >> Okay. I see
it's $820 difference. >> There's a reason to >> Yeah. This just over the summer. Yeah, the sound is going to be shut down. >> It's a good question. We have so many performances COMING THROUGH. >> NOT EVEN that just like >> and we we have this. We would love to join it in May of every year. >> Everybody that ever needs to use it, it is a fascinating meeting with calendars. Of course. >> And it even gets to the point of when you set up a shelf like, okay, have the shell, put it up on this day, this concert in this and this community band. You do it that weekend and then we can do the orchestra the other weekend. So we take it down so we can play it because it's like there's in
there and concert on the same day. I was just happy this year with the uh the powerlifting beat that we didn't have to get the um daughter dance right after >> so >> whatever it's called this change names over time. >> Okay. Any other questions on the um let's do a roll call >> Mrs. Riser I >> I All right, moving on to discussion items. Um the first on the agenda is the trustee appointment process. Um we haven't actually had a board meeting since Ryan submitted his resignation. Um and I appreciate everybody just rolling with our standard. I mean, our policy dictates sort of how everything goes, but um we did want to give a opportunity to just review the plan and if people have questions or comments or things that we should think about,
it gives us a chance to talk about them. Um so, we are in the open um enrollment application period um through Thursday at 4 pm. So if people ask you um applications are until that time hope will give us the um application materials as soon as you can after that we won't see any applications until the close of the application period though just to make sure that everything comes to us at once. Um we have the interview date and time scheduled here. I will connect with on Friday and find out how many people have applied and just kind of figure out how it should be broken down. Um, we do have sort of a bank of questions from previous um, interviews that I guess it's something that we could talk about like whether people want
to see them or contribute to them or offer new thoughts on those. Um, so I guess I just want to open it up to everybody about sort of the outline of where we're at. And if Chris or Ryan have any things you want to chime in and suggest, that would be great as well. >> Historically this candidate for process, but what we do is we have it right down. We'll have some process. So everything anybody writes shows up here. um usually several positives and we always one thing I've seen over the years is we have incredible community members. You always get multiples great candidates that want to serve kids, want to serve the community and it is every time it's really you're going to walk away going we could have placed all it's really great
but you're picking your What needs we need in this group? Sure. >> So, I do have a question. So, after the interviews are conducted on February 19th, do we make a decision? >> Yeah. >> Well, usually it'll be >> we're going to do it at the next board meeting on the >> question. We could have them sent to everyone. Oh, could send them to everyone and then if people have specific questions, they could email me only. Would that work? >> Okay. >> I'll again just get the same question. Go. >> Um, >> yeah, it is how we've done it in the past. Yeah. Sorry, I had to think for a second. Yeah, it is. And some of you have gone through that process. It's I mean there was one year 20 over the years and
it is a it's it's an interesting process. The most interesting thing is that's those but it is a good introduction. And I I didn't mention, but we did have an information session last week and we did have two candidates there. Um, and I did let people know at that meeting that the goal the goal of the interview is just for us to get to know the candidates and understand sort of what they're interested in and their background and how they fit in with us and that it is not something they need to study for, cra, they're just introducing themselves to us. So if people talk to you about it too like it's totally great to lower expect people don't need to worry about that and whoever is the appointee is going to have to run
and choose a trustee that >> and then what'll happen sometimes right now is the seed could serve the end of the calendar However, if there knows it, it might check the attorneys. We don't know. We'll never know the exact scenario until we know how many people file for the actual election in November and who they are and their scenario like if incumbents incumbent with that end up changing there are times that please don't do this. So like someone who just was elected in the last cycle as a six-year term could run for a different six-year term and then therefore open response. Yeah. That's why there's so many >> there's so many weird scenarios. That's why just >> as of right now it's probably through the end of December there's a chance it could be right
depending on the scenario. You never know what >> judges judges do that >> all the time. like >> there is a game to play someone. >> So I know we put some links out on social media. Can you state for the what they require? What do we require of applicants? >> A resume and a letter of interest. of interest just getting to know you have any particular point of view or anything like that just introduc a eligibility people find passive >> you do that when you're a kid >> and there is a popup on our website if you are looking for it So >> yeah, >> yes, people do expect to know a little bit more on any questions that sound like. >> All right. All right. Um up next is our financial narrative. Um,
this evening's packet includes summary financial information for the current school year through December 31st, 2025. The area came out a little bit later to align with the budget amendment which came out later due to the state government shutdown. Well, I do like seeing things like favorable variance. So, thank you Christine for a term of art. I don't know. This is so thorough. I I know it helps you to read it and understand more than just numbers on grid. So, I know this is a lot of work because it's >> Yeah. Not only for me, right, all of our buildings and departments as well. And so, they provide the information. They're in charge of managing their budget, reading their reports, and we work with them to make sure that the narrative is not only accurate, but
clear for you guys as well. So, we did get a little board feedback um or I got a little board feedback, I say last year uh that some of these needed a little bit more detail. Uh we worked with the majority of the departments and uh the buildings and I think we achieved that mostly. Uh we have a couple other uh we have a couple that we want to work on a little bit more. So what we try to do is make sure that you are seeing a budget percentage so that you know that um they are within their maybe 50% range halfway through the year. It gives you something to analyze. We also want to make sure that you can read in there what um what they're doing, right? Because that's not something that
you can see on a budget. So we're working. We're almost there. Um I think this was a little bit more detailed. So hopefully you guys feel that way. Um I got a few questions um and I responded to those emails. So, um I'm I'm grateful for that. It's nice to know that you guys are are taking a look at them. Um but, uh other than that, you'll see it again at the end of May. So, probably in April for the period end. I'm sorry, March. I mean, March, >> then May, then June. But yeah, you'll see in April for the period ending 3:30. >> And probably at a pretty good place to have trans. Well, we say that, but then we keep getting onetime money. >> I can take that out next time. >> Holy
moly. >> The relay. >> Well, it's the only thing we're tracking showing regular 20. >> Yeah, we'll take that out for March. Unless >> that's fine. Although I I just for you know for the record I think it is good for the community to see there's huge chunks of money that is not coming in now that was coming over years. So I agree that at some point or even now it makes sense but I really do appreciate sort of being able to track the long-term trajectory because it is a vast difference year. >> Yeah. I just want to thank all of the buildings because it is really helpful for us to know what they use their money for because when people talk to us about the money in the schools, it really is helpful to
have stories and understand what money is being spent and for the community to know that we understand it. Thank you. Thank you. >> Anybody else? Okay. Um we are at our second period for public participation. Is there anyone who would like to address the board right? Um we are we are up to the board comments. Well I know I know my colleague here we both attended the MB winner virtual. I don't know if anybody else did. I did two classes. I don't know who you did. Four. >> Four. You were over. >> I was four is a lot. >> But it I mean it was nice. I like when they do it virtually your office, but we do miss that touch point with the people. But it's always nice that they offer that. So I
encourage next year virtual. Get on that get on those CBAs get your credentials. It's it nice to hear from other districts too, you know, and to realize how how blessed we are. aspects. >> It's true. >> I don't know. Sometimes sometimes you get emails afterwards like, "Hey, here are here are all the things I'm thinking right now." So, >> Brian got that one Friday night. >> Um, but they also they have a lot of really good topics like I did on ethics. I did one on overseeing superintendency. I did one on um it was kind of kind like case studies and something about feedback using feedback um leveraging feedback >> knowing that people >> and a lot of them are online and you can just watch I just >> the oneonone where it's like you
are and this is what you do. It's like all >> That's the biggest question that I've got asked is that what does it take to be >> classes? Yeah. >> Yeah, that's right. >> So, would we if community members were interested, they would either contact board members or you then and then it would come to a board agenda probably. It's something you probably >> might want to make an expectation back that way people know that >> okay in the past I know that the board president would specifically like different efforts. So if you could get names from some of the principles or Chris or Ryan of people who are active in the community that you know it's just a way for behind the scenes or either behind the scenes or to attend um or to
apply whatever whatever it is because just uh I think to Mike's point a lot of people think that they don't have the credentials to apply for or position and I think I think if we are more proactive in reaching out to as to get the applicants in. Um I think we'll have better success. I just think people are attuned by this process. So it's a way to especially the way that >> you can on my Twitter 2017 like oh nice. Anyone else have comments? >> Okay. Um we have a bunch of information items at the end of the packet. We have our trustee resignation notice. We have the updated declarations, norms and social media guidelines that we updated our last workshop. We have CF and ad hoc minutes. Uh we have information items on kindergarten
and young five information night and openhouse school of choice application information and an update on the CTE millillage time frame. Um those last three did go out in the most recent um community flyers, but we were highlighting here in case members are looking at our packet as well. We do not have a close session tonight. So with that we are turned. Thank you everyone.
