001All right. Good evening everyone. This is a meeting of the board of education and public for the purpose of conducting the school district's business and it's not to be considered a public community meeting. The agenda reserves two periods for public participation and those wishing to receive a personal response from the board or superintendent must complete a public comment form available at the meeting entrance and on our website. Upon request to the superintendent, the district shall make reasonable accommodation for a person with disabilities to be able to participate in this meeting. Well, can you please call the role? >> Mr. Oliver >> here. >> Mr. Arnold >> here. >> Mrs. Brutderley >> here. >> Mr. Sapola >> here. >> Miss Kangas. >> Mrs. Riser >> here. >> Benito >> here. >> Mr. Brand >> here. >>
002Okay. Um, we have meeting minutes from our October 6th meeting in the packet. >> I'll move that the board of education approve the attached meeting minutes from October 6, 2025 as presented. Second. >> We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? All those in favor of approving the meeting minutes from October 6th, please say I. I. Any opposed? >> Okay. The board policy provides that the superintendent of schools shall prepare an agenda for all board meetings as directed by the president board of education. >> I'll move that board of education approve the agenda as presented. Second. >> We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? All those in favor, please say I. I. >> Any opposed? Okay, first up, we have school presentations. Starting with the National Principal Month. >> Um, October is
003National Principal Month. I have a quick statement to read. It's a time to recognize the extraordinary leaders who guide our schools every day in Dexter. We're fortunate to have principles whose commitment to students, staff, and families defines what makes our school special. Principles are instructional leaders, problem solvers, mentors, and advocates. They make a hund make hundreds of decisions each day, sometimes thousands, all centered on creating safe, supportive, and engaging environments for students and staff. Our principles lead with heart and purpose. They don't mismanage buildings. They nurture communities. They know students by name and by story. They greet them at the door, celebrate their successes, and guide them through challenges with compassion and high expectations. Their leadership creates a conditions where curiosity, confidence, and connection thrive. They also invest deeply in our staff. Principles build professional
004cultures rooted in trust, collaboration, shared purpose. They empower teachers to grow and innovate, ensuring every classroom reflects the best of what public education can be. Much of their impact happens quietly in a conversation in the hallway. A word of encouragement or a thoughtful decision made behind the scenes. These daily acts of leadership shape the shape the experience of every student make Dexter the strong caring to be the day it is. We want to thank our principles for leading with courage, commitment and heart. We have an incredible group. We've been blessed with incredible leadership for many decades and uh we current principles right now continue this tradition to have a quick video that was put together that we'll share more publicly up to today. Um, and want to thank everybody for putting this together. All right.
005>> I like Miss and I because she's funny, caring, and super. I like Miss Holl because uh she's always very nice in the office and very funny. I like Miss Noak because she holders close your hands. is very proud of the people in the district. Miss is very inclusive. She took her ideas and dealt off them. Ma is very clear with her expectations. She's first. Mr. Patterson always decisions first. Mr. Patter is kind even. Mr. Patter is respectful even. >> Mr. Patterson is really cool. >> I love how understanding Mr. >> M. We appreciate you being as easy as we have Spartan as a job. >> Thank you for bringing Spartan into the costumes cuz sometimes >> we appreciate you being kind. >> Miss Ken is so kind and sparking. >> We appreciate you being
006kind and funny. Thank you for really >> technology's been off all day. >> Yeah. >> Well, that was a good model yesterday. >> We'll come back to it. So, we've been rolling these out week by week and this Julie is going to be the deck. So that's why they're not exon is really fun and she let us on day. Thank you for being so supportive and nice and I know you're being such >> we appreciate you bringing Sparta around the school to let people because there's a lot of people that games and so we appreciate that you bring them out. >> Thank you for letting us use the mailbox to share thoughts and ideas for what we love to have. We appreciate you because you help out so much. Thank you, Mr. Karen. >> It's
007great. >> Thank you to our principles. We have >> every we give them >> every year we give them some kind of thank you gift, some recognition, you know, we give them a gift if they haven't. So happy. >> That's great. >> Might as well roll on. >> Okay. of CT College. >> This this is your agenda. So you feel free to >> your meeting. My hope for our future is better access to construction trades programs for high school students. I found my passion and a great platform for becoming a construction manager through my trades program. >> Our program, the second day of school, the excavator shows up then the real world takes over. I believe that every student deserves to have an opportunity like that and I hope for our future deep breaking in
008that failure. If how we understand every piece you take apart teaches you how it fits, how it works, and how it get better when you can see the bigger picture is too big to solve. uh the final day of school they walk away with a completed house and up for sale sign off. My name is Coach B and my hope for the future is CTE. >> The future moves with us. So we have the mill vote is on the ISD's mill votes on the ballot on November 4th sending out this week and >> do do we have anything going out to the Sun Times? Is there like a press release going out? >> There was I saw something I've seen stuff >> in the times >> whether it's from WD I've seen some Um, >>
009and then a careers presentation. >> So, the board said few goals a couple years ago and one of them was working on careers. Kaitlin Nelson, our career development facilitator, it's here to give a short update. >> Did you leave the screen? >> Uh, yes, please. Talk about technology today. My laptop sounds like it's we can take off hot. I don't know why. >> Been working hard. >> Working hard trying to connect. Thank you for having me tonight. Um, I just wanted to take a few minutes to update you all on uh where we are this year with our college and career readiness initiative um and share with you some exciting student uh career interests uh that we've been able to gather um since we've been actively working in schools the past 12 months. So, briefly
010just touching on our board goal alignment and the efforts that we are making. Um I will also talk to you a little bit about how we are integrating our fifth and sixth graders into the school lease platform. uh share with you a few slides uh that will uh showcase our student data and then discuss the career fair um for this uh school year and the enhancements we plan on making. So this slide I will not read it to you because went very well but we are working um on those efforts to expand this into a K through2 initiative and this year uh last year we started with our 7th through 12th graders integrating them in the school links um and working on those college and career readiness skills. this year now that we have a
011brand new careers of technology class at Creekide um they are onboarding into this system. So they start onboarding by uh taking that find your path assessment and that is the assessment that every student must take before they have access to the full uh dashboard and platform. So this is a tool that is designed to help our students um identify their strengths and their personality traits, character strengths like curiosity, uh leadership, um all those types of skills and then they get matched with uh career clusters that um they are it's new to them. So our fifth and sixth graders do not know what career clusters are, but they are learning about some personality traits and those character strengths and things that they enjoy doing. So hobbies and skills required um to be successful in those hobbies
012and how those can align and different types of careers. So we are starting with that. Um our fifth graders and sixth graders rotate through careers in technology every five weeks. So they have a different fiveweek rotation. So we're in the early stages of it, but so far um the outputs have been very positive. Um and we're also using these insights to guide goal setting activities and really just building vocabulary around uh what strengths and interests are and character traits. We are also um continuing that ongoing engagement with grades 7 through 12. So they are continuing to complete interest assessments um goal setting. This is happening in seventh grade in our careers and technology class, eighth grade teched class, and then 9th through 12 advisory for our students that meet once a month for five minutes.
013Um, some of the reflection is ranging on what their post-secary options are. So, college, four-year college, two-year degrees, skilled trades, military or direct workforce paths. Um, we're also making sure that students understand that goals are not static. Um, they are meant to be revised and revisited throughout the year. So that way um they understand more about who they are and what their preferences are for the work and then they revise their beliefs throughout the year. Um I also think that this engagement is really going to help students see that college and career readiness or we abbreviate it CCR is a journey. It is not a one-time task. So having them in here um frequently and having these discussions frequently um is going to solidify that these are um ongoing goals and that they can change
014um and they probably will change um but we want to make sure that they are just given all the resources and tools to make those income decisions. Now these next few slides are going to show you that uh student data. So the uh time period here um that the login and all the data that you see on this dashboard is ranges from uh September 9th of 2024 um to October 14th which was last week. So it's a nice snapshot of our student engagement. We have had nearly 16,000 student loginins um and over 1,700 unique students accessing the system. So it's showing that they are engaging in the system. If you look down at the bottom, you will see um the spikes in usage through throughout the year. And this is going to align with key
015advisory activities that they've done um and different CCR rollouts, programming rollouts. Uh another new thing that we have started in school leagues this year for our juniors and seniors is college rep visits. So in the past, we would have college reps reach out to uh myself and counseling team to schedule a time to come meet with our students and we would just put them in the daily announcements. students would come down to the counseling office and they would sign up on a piece of paper to see the uh meet with that rep. This year um school links does have an engagement piece where we can create events and invite partners to be a part of the program. So as college reps have reached out to come meet with our stu students um I have directed
016them to school links they've created an account they're now a partner. our students go in and they um see all the events that are coming and all the college reps that are coming to visit and they can register for these events. We also have a tracking system um and see how many students are signing up for which schools. This is our 9th through 12th grade career data and this is um a powerful snapshot of how our students are engaging um in the postsecary planning and career planning. So we've had a total of 818 students who have um set a post-secondary goal and we've had 16 students that have identified a career. So if we look at the donut chart here at the top about 75% u of our 9th through 12th graders are interested in
017a four-year degree u followed by a two-year degree. There's some gap year students trade school workforce and apprenticeships. Um down here on the career side at the bottom this is going to uh grab our students gravitate towards high interest careers. So medicine, business management, law, engineering, animal and veterary sciences. The number over here on the right to the horizontal bar graph is not the percentage of students that are favored in that type of profession, but that's the actual number of students. So, if we were actively in the analytics page right now, I could scroll down this tab right here and it will show you a bunch of different types of professions that our students are favorite. I think this data is also really important because it's not just informative, it's actionable. So, now we're able
018to see how we can guide and allocate resources um and build resources, build partnerships um and design programming that are going to reflect voices. our sixth through eighth grade career data um is not quite uh we don't have quite as many students but also because our sixth and seventh graders this year are brand new and so not every one of them have been onboarded in the system because not every one of them have gotten into that careers of technology class yet. However, we still have 83 students that have uh created a post-secary goal. Um we can see that there's a similar percentage of students that uh would like to possibly pursue a four-year degree. We also have the two-year degree after military apprenticeship workforce. One area that um is not quite as represented is the
019trades. And I think that just reflects how data is important because a lot of our sixth and eighth grade students don't know what trade jobs are in. So this is an opportunity now to inform them about the different pathways and educate them. At the bottom, we have their career uh data. And as you can see, professional athlete >> is uh is up on the list. And uh that's I mean we have a lot of talented athletes in next year. So um medicine though we see I mean we do see some some of the same now medicine law um animal and veterary sciences uh business um I liked that we can see the uh entrepreneurial thinking so entrepreneurship's in there and those communication based fields. So that was exciting to see >> and then aggregate data.
020So this is going to give us a bird's eye view of our students interests across grade levels and it's a roadmap how we can support students and shape programming. So why does this matter? Well, understanding um students interests ensures that our CCR efforts are relevant um and responsive. It's also helping us tailor and align advisory content. So guest speakers we want to bring in and create um that pool of speakers for our career fair based on what our students are really interested um in pursuing. We can also use it to guide future electives, CTE pathways. Um so it's just a powerful tool. Um but it's not just for planning. I think it's also for equity. So we want to make sure it's we're building systems um for all of our students that are going to
021reflect their values and uh make sure that every path is supported. And then finally, we just talk a little bit about our career fair. I it was a very successful event last year. Um we got overwhelming positive feedback. We don't want to change what worked. Um so similar to last year's fair, we're going to host a large diverse group of professionals across all 16 career clusters and it will be on Monday, March 2nd of 2026. Our student experience will be um very similar to last year as well. So our students will attend third three 30 minute presentations um and they will select their sessions based on their career cluster preferences. Now the enhancements we would like to make um this is based on feedback that we received. So, one big area is a streamlined check-in
022process. Um, we want to centralize check-in at the CPI. Um, that will ensure faster entry and also reduce the bottlenecking that they experience in the main doors where our students also enter the building. Um, we so we will have clear signage um trained student ambassadors who will guide our attendees to the CPA um in a welcoming and organized fashion. Um, they will receive a welcome bag. they will enter the CPA for a quick meeting that goes over some housekeeping items and then they will be released to their assigned space. An area for our students that we would like to enhance and improve on is providing them with a more updated biographies and clear uh career descriptions. So this last year our students received a Google form um and it had the career cluster and then
023the title of the job. Our students need more context. We all know that what we do and our job titles don't necessarily accurately reflect all the things that we do in a day. So, if we can provide um a bigger biography and more description so they know what they're signing up for and they can uh choose what their preference is. We would also like to create a few uh specialty career panels uh this year. So, for instance, uh nursing and law, there's a lot of specialties within those fields. um is so we create panels where students now get to rotate through a panel and learn about those different specialties. So for nursing we would have a panel of um ER or nurse pediatric nurse surgical nurse and they'd be placed in a large room such
024as our orchestra or band room and then our students get to hear a little bit from each specialty and then that a staff member would facilitate that. So our staff member will make sure that each presenter is able to have the time to speak. Um it will just offer uh guided conversations, ensure students are engaged and also uh support meaningful questions. We would also utilize a panel for our military branch. Some students who are interested in possibly joining the military after we uh rotate through a panel. So if anybody has any questions for me for today, >> no great and I love to see how it's coming together even more last year. So kudos to you. >> Yeah. My daughter's in sixth grade, so I already have they if she was gushing about it, so
025she's really excited about it. >> Oh, good. Yeah. Yeah. So, it's good to see it in place. >> Thanks very much for being here. >> Yeah. Thank Kaitlyn doing such a great job. Melanie's been working really closely on getting this off the ground and last year just getting to the point where we we brought in new software, figured out how to use it. Uh the career fair was incredible and then how to branch out this year the branching out clear in the middle school moving down to 56 which is which is huge and it's all related and it's consistent even to the point endless hours have gone into scheduling classes figuring out if you want to go into this career here's the courses we offer at fit but that's a work in progress but it's
026close >> closer every speak. How many different um panels or do you all you imagine this year? >> So uh three we know for sure for nursing um law and military but I am starting my to reach out to presenters that participated last year. I would start next week to see who um would like to participate this year um and then identify gaps and bring in um so we can fill in those gaps. I think there's a possibility that depending on um where our students interests are we might need to create a few more panels. I could see engineering possibly being a panel. Um maybe some business, but I think three for sure, but we might just sort of see what's appropriate as we start. >> How many do you have people? I wasn't able
027to tell them last year or watching. How many do you have last year? >> How many presenters did we have? >> Panels or groups? I guess we didn't do last year. >> We had individual presentations in different spots and we had 129. And I is that still going to be >> um well we realized that >> it the sess some of the rotations were very small and some of the spaces that were allocated were not ideal. A lot of our presenters would prefer AED capabilities that we were not able to provide everyone because we did not have the space to do so. So I think this year creating panels will free up some rooms that will not be able to be a part of the panel. So, I think what we really want to focus
028on is making sure that we do have a diverse group, making sure we do have representation from trades. We don't necessarily maybe need 10 in business. Um, so if we can just find that diverse group, we I think would like to keep it around 80 to 90 this year. I think we can comfortably say that we can fit that amount of guest speakers in spaces. Um, and then creating those panels is going to allow us to >> panels are bigger bigger, bigger clusters. >> Yep. >> Yeah. You could have a building >> three different types of lawyers at this table. >> Yeah. >> Right. And our job because our days look very different. >> Yeah. You could have a building trades panel with with, you know, obviously construction, you know, plumbing, electrical, HBAC, somebody, you
029know, that >> they may not need the AB capabilities. A lot of those um presenters prefer to show something. So, we had a uh we had a special agent uh for the FBI come in. Actually, he's one of our neighbors. um and he brought a lie detector test in and he was like, "I'm perfectly happy in the gym and I have students on the bleachers and they got to come down, they got to try it." So, we'll still utilize those spaces for presenters that don't need necessarily need um a meeting. So, >> all right, it's exciting. Great. >> Thank you. >> We appreciate the update. Um All right. Next up is our first opportunity for public participation. Is there anyone here who would like to address the board? the readings that >> I can be
030rigid if you'd like me to. >> All right, moving on to the administrative and board update starting with the superintendent. >> All right. Um, CF update. We held a feedback session last week in the evening. We have two more this week on Wednesday at two different times during the day. Um and then look for something coming to the board November 3rd for a heat reef and then probably the 10th we got special meeting in that process but look for that come decisions are going to be made next piece is a bond update so I'm thinking Mr. Brand may have shown up there. All right. So, series one. So, we have $66.5 million sitting in the bank right now that we are going to start spending coming pretty soon. And here's where we are in designs
031process. So, did you want to walk through this one and I'll knock through the rest? >> Sure. >> You made it. Uh so we have these are the major um jobs major projects that we're doing. Uh the high school entrance and weight rooms that includes anything that we going to the office uh the under everything on the first floor basically underground room and everything to support those spaces. the CTE classroom that also includes the storage for the theater. >> Yeah. And then the fieldhouse uh is fieldhouse plus all the site work associated with that. Uh athletic entrances, that's both Elit and the baseball, softball, soccer fields at the high school. Uh so all that work together lighting is is replacing the lights uh at LRIP and the addition is the classroom which you'll also do
032a couple things. We're going to replace some mechanical stuff that be kind of so what this is is just shows you know we've been in planning uh TMP has moved into actual design. I think you'll see some of of their progress here. Um and those orange well they were orange those lines are when we're going to start delivering estimates. So our first group will be in mid November and then as the design gets further detail we'll present an estimate in December that'll help us uh make decisions on uh if anything needs to be changed in the design or as we're going forward. uh bidding out hopefully January and February and starting construction generally the summer of 26 with the exception of the fieldhouse will start earlier. Our hope there is that we can open the
033fieldhouse by the time fall sports starts in 27th so that's available to athletes August 8th or whatever that first day is uh for for use. Um otherwise the auditions are going to just go through the basically summer to summer. U lighting is kind of see it broken up there if all the parts and pieces are available and electrical gear is what's released. So right now that might take us until the summer otherwise we do winter. Athletic entrances. Uh we're going to try and get a jump on that but it doesn't look like design will allow it. So it'll likely be next summer >> if the bleachers or anything take a longer time to do it after the fall season. The point is that it would be impacting athletics with whatever we choose to do outside
034of their seasons. Um and then close out that final punching those sorts of things. One of the big pieces to look at is that we need to get bid in this window here in order to lock up in >> Yeah. >> contract. That's one of the challenges with schools is we have times that we can do certain things at times we can't. >> So that's going to be one of the big challenges. So I'll go into some details of the projects. So the high school front entrance, this is a conceptual rendering of the wait room and the new ratunda entrance. It is a It's a beautiful school, but the entrance is like where do you go? It It's really strange the way it turned out, but trying to build that a more prominent entrance because
035when people do visit the school, they're like, I don't know where the entrance is. If we're putting a secure entrance in to make it prominent, you had to match what was happening up front. You'll see it's a curved structure and then a setup with some ways to be able to lock down, put offices and pass through, but not moving the whole office up like the elementary, >> but some offices up front so that you don't just enter and go in. Um, the wait room is a curved structure with a side entrance for athletics. So before school, in the evening, in the summer, people can come in this way so that they don't have to go through the whole building. We don't need to leave the main entrance wide open. So they go straight in. Also
036including the weight room is a small bathroom so the kids aren't going all the way down the track and around and out the ballway to go. They can just it's a one single stall bed. Um just conceptual renderings of that rotunda fancy dreadnut statue >> um seating. >> Yeah, just it's a concept. If it makes it through, great. It'd be really cool, but it'd be welcome to Dexter. So, front entrance, part of that work is going to involve digging down. We need to put the mechanical rooms and everything underneath and it'll involve putting another exit going out at about at that first floor because remember, you come in on the second floor. >> Yeah. >> So, we're going to lose an office in the process and have to do some moving around down there. But
037it also it allows us to put some athletic storage down there for uniforms and things that tend to get damp and it'll be right next to the mechanical room so we can put that dehumidification. >> Isn't that the counseling area down there? >> Yeah, that's over this >> that further in. Okay. >> So this is literally under the ground. >> That's under the ground. Okay. >> So just as an as a concept where it would end up. >> Oh, that's true. Yeah. >> So also rework the entire drop off pickup. So, we're working through that. Uh, we'll need to pave that green section outside the twin turfs and there's a section there. The band, it was originally not paved. Band practiced on it and things people park on it all the time, tear it up.
038Um, the drop off loop what we're playing with is keeping that same kind of loop, but it's going to have to move a little bit. So, it's some significant restructuring and then possibly paving this other parking area that's all grass right now. They were always put in. You'll see we have lights going right down the middle. It was put in that we could paint the was the always the intent, not final drawings. These are concepts as of right now. They're still working through the details. So, front entrance just to give an idea. So, you have the ratunda entrance and then you have this uh the weight room which all of this right now is that where the bell is and everything. The bell would go in the courtyard. There's actually a beautiful spot in the
039courtyard that's a giant circle with another giant circle right in the middle that looks like it was meant for something to go in it. >> And it would put it in there, which is a great spot, but it would leave that drop off and then clean up some of the walking in for the kids because parents turn it into multiple drop off loops. >> Yeah. >> Um the idea of that parking lot, it is all curved to slow cars down. It does its trick. It's slow, but there's some work there in the back where we build the CTE edition in the storage. We're going to have to do a little work too on pavement and some work back there. This is just a screenshot of part of it. So, for the CTE edition, what we're
040looking at point, so this is the theat's right here, the CPA, and then we have a couple rooms back here like Ben Marsh's old room. No, I am >> is back here. This is the band room. So, the build music storage right here. Build tear out part of this wall, make this all a large wood shop construction trade space and then put drama storage off of the existing sink shaft off of that area because they need storage. and then to put a foundation out in the back for building trades to start building houses that could then be put on a trailer and sold and put on a lot soon. Um the foundation's the cheapest part, just cable. >> Yeah, >> that's pretty easy. >> And then that's you can see this little drawing here shows
041kind of where it's at in terms of what we have to do with the landscaping and the routes. There's a fire route back there. Might have to move something. It still hasn't been quite played out yet. There's that uh drive in the back. You'll start paying attention to all these gates and drives >> in a different way. WY >> seven classrooms built straight off the back. >> Pretty simple. >> Um yeah, except there's some underground stuff to work through and we're probably going to have we need to resurface the Challenger field. So, at some point we might have to just move it over a little bit. >> Where we put our new electrical from the panel? >> It runs under here. >> Okay. So, we're not impacting that. That's good. Okay. >> Um, one thing
042we'll have to figure out is where the entrance really is. I don't know if we want them entering into the panel panels or not. Well, that still working. But the idea is the small lobby so they come in don't walk around in the classrooms for the bus hub. A restroom. So, we put restrooms in the back here. So this wing because the nearest restrooms are all all the way up here building. So we built some restrooms here. So kind of similar to how we built at the deck where there's a single use and then the sinks are more of a outside setup but then a restroom here that is accessible from the playroom >> like we did. We did this at Anchor and Beacon. There's one outside so the kids don't have to go inside
043for the play. >> Um it'll involve we need to resurface Challenger Field. So, it'll involve at some point we got to resurface it. We may have to clip off part of it and just shift it a little bit. We'll resurface, but it's still very efficient. U field >> where is that that be the primary entrance? >> This No, this the bus hub's right here. So, it's the kids in the bus hub can come straight in here. Right now, they walk all the way up the sidewalk around the electrical unit and in these doors here. It is the weirdest way to enter my school. >> You guys are really parents and visitors during >> the front. This is the back. >> Um fieldhouse. So one of the big pieces of the fieldhouse is to keep a
044second story mezanine. The mezzanine expensive. It's a fairly inexpensive way to add 10,000 square feet. Um the mezzanine would give us options. They'd be large enough to fit as large as a couple wrestling mats, multiple batting cages, dance area, very flexible, can fit a ton of things up there. Mezzanine would be 53 feet wide and 185 ft long, which is wide enough to do just about anything. Um, then on the main surface, we'd have 50 feet of turf, 10 foot for the end zone. We have enough room for the track lanes around the turf. So on all four sides, they'd be just shy of 70 yards, 65, 60, 70 yards, 52 this way. Um, which would give us room for full vault, long jump practice. It would give room for sprint lanes. You could do
045some uh hurdles, >> some hurdles, etc. Um, we have to figure we put in team rooms, but the team rooms would allow us to run banquetss there. And a lot of times other than a couple sports, we don't need the cafeteria for banquetss. It's too big. Well, we can run banquetss there or teams can come in off the turfs or uh and other spaces to go watch film and do what they have to do. And then a multi-purpose room that is large enough to fit the dance team or some a team like that that is currently renting space offsite. Cheer and dance are displaced and everything. Um a lobby entrance, couple offices and it would give us some flexibility to be able to put like right now the mezzanine can fit 42 foot wrestling mats,
046four batting cages. Netting would drop down around so we can pin off the lanes. um is none of it is a competition site. >> Mhm. >> In the work, it was this is about 60,000 square foot on the floor, 10,000 up top. To put an actual competition field in is about 10 to$20 million more is significant and it doesn't fit anywhere without huge mitigation. So, I'll show you that. Um, this is the idea of where it would go is if you're walking on the turfs, put a sidewalk straight through and be where those light poles are in the middle that it would be straight ahead. As part of the project, when the turf needs to be replaced to put a track in, >> we have 300 track athletes and nowhere. We have one track and
047it's shared with the stadium to put one right at the high school. So, we would need parking, etc. There'd be a road that would come from the back, not from the road yet, up through to get parking, but then many of the athletes, depending on the weather, be walking in depending what time of year it is. Um, so for the layout, this is the land itself. There is a wet land that runs through here, creek. So, it's fitting without having to mitigate or disrupt any wetlands. If we go through right here, um there's significant elevation trying to bring a drive this way. The other option is to put a drive off of Parker Road. So, we go through that process. Um right now, we're working on whatever the right option is, but there are a
048couple options. Um, one of the challenges it's not a ton of trees to cut down that already cut down up through about this line right here. So, and it's a lot of brush through there. There's two real like significant trees we could sell off or pre-engineering engineered gulch or something, but a lot of it's scrub trees. They've been cleared a few times historically. Um, the key is to try to avoid these wild. >> Yeah. >> So, we're going to need retaining walls and other things back there. >> Um, just gives you an idea of where it would go and what the kind of flow would be for parking because we're going to need enough parking back there. But it's the idea is as much use as possible. The issue was we're overspilling our gyms. So,
049how do we make the most flexible space possible so we have room for all the groups and kids that want to use it? Including when we held the forums like robotics would love to host a competition in there. They just need a big space. Um, we looked at what do we mean to set up a full track or you needed at least I think it was 300 meters not competition 200 meter but when you do 200 meter the curves are too tight you can't fit in the actual turf in the pit. So it's this weird tradeoff. Um so as we worked through it was trying to figure out how to get the most things possible so that they could use the space. We the design includes offices so we could if we chose put community
050ed over there put offices over there so we could keep it open and have a ch five end system out if we chose not deciding how it would work yet but building the infrastructure so we had options here because they're just a couple um ideally well there'd be bathrooms in here but when you look at with the turfs we have we had the bids come in today to build the restroom building over here they came in within the budget So we'll be bringing that we facilities on Friday and then to the board by October 3rd. >> There's no bathrooms in the >> There's bathroom. No, there is >> in the fieldhouse. >> Yeah. What we don't want to do is leave it unlocked all the time >> because if you drive by the church really
051pay there's people out there all the time and what we've done with those small restroom buildings is we just leave them unlocked because the worst they're going to do is damage a toilet >> and not damage an entire building. So, it's I we designed this always wanted to put bathrooms there. We probably should have done it for lunch, but we're at that point. But it would allow us to run this separate and keep it locked when we like you don't want to have anybody on a two or a Saturday morning just wandering in bathroom or bathroom like the part where you have lockers. the ones that are going to be here or inside the fieldhouse >> outside the it's four individual bathrooms >> with >> like milk creek right basically >> we made them a
052little bigger we put hooks in them so the kids could change clothes and things like that we spell out put a little shelf in there kids will leave kids they change all >> so um again the timelines >> going as fast as we can go we have 66.5 million in the bank that we need to uh we're not allowed to earn point and remember going >> taxpayers gave us the money start putting this stuff in place. So it's going to be coming fast and furious. It's uh we got through this phase. Now we get to the next one. Then we'll start working on the big designs like across the streets of the big design. >> That's going to that's going to be all little sense. So that's where we're at as of uh 7:43 p.m.
053on October 20th. >> So even if we wanted to go bigger with our footprint on the fieldhouse and say we just theoretically nixed the mezzanine because that's a it's pretty good expense to have elevator eress all that stuff up there. We nixed that and added square footage to the building itself. >> We were pushing up against those wetlands. >> Yeah. There's a significant cost change. That's part of the problem. >> It's doable. Everything's doable. Moving right. Going up makes more sense than going up for that reason. >> It's It is less expensive. >> I don't know. >> Greg can explain the difference in square foot when you build up versus >> everything. >> Yeah. It's already covered. So you're not, you know, you're doubling up your space. that you know going out um is >>
054but another couple of of you know steel structure going out is not a big deal. It's the wetland infrastructure. >> Yeah. >> You could could expand that building in the future >> by just adding more steel portals like >> you just build onto it like any other metal building. >> Yeah. But you have probably million and a half in wetland remediation to do. So >> what did you call >> turning it that way? >> Then you you know everywhere park >> right >> and we looked at other sites. There's >> yeah the other one is out on >> there's issues with that site too. The cost is not that drastically different. This is probably more expensive because of the drive. And I'm just wondering why are we doing that drive from the back end of
055the building? Why wouldn't you just do it right off Parker? >> Probably will eventually. >> One thing we want to figure out is how our kids >> Yeah. >> the left out of that parking lot night. We had a kid get killed about 13 or 14 years ago. That's a really hard turn. You can't see anything. And our kids will drive over there to practice and they'll pull out. We probably long term >> they'd pull out the main intersection, go down and then pull them back in >> long term. But really once this if we and we have to go through approvals with road commission to put in another cut which is a long lengthy process >> long term what really should be looked at as a district is analyze that traffic after we build
056this on how it comes out with the intent of putting another drive coming in. But what is the solution here? >> Is it a roundabout? Is it a light? What is it to make it a a safe return? Ideally, there's traffic engineers will have come up with the right idea, but they could like you could slow it down by giving up a corner of land and putting a roundabout there to slow the cars down. >> Is that the right thing to do? You'd have to pay traffic engineers, but as a district, if it's on our property, the district can pay for it. Like when we built these roundabouts here or when the road commission did, we that wasn't in the bond plan. The bond plan said we were going to straighten out all the driveways
057going into the creek side building and figure out how we're going to address that backup on Shield and Baker and on Dan Hoey at Baker and then it just turned out the road commission we got everybody together and figured out how to get some federal funds to be able to build roundabouts and then we took our bond funds and we bought the now gray house used to be blue house and we put drive there and you're going to have those come up like we had a really we have a really good plan, but as you start executing the plan, the situation changes and you have to be willing to be able to pivot. And one of those pivots logically could be going the two to three year route, figuring out how you're going to change
058the traffic pattern at the exit of that high school and to get in back here. But it's years. You're like, what do you think it'll take to put if you want to put a roundabout there? Two to three years of process. indicate that if we were pushing it very hard like >> somewhere long process >> if you didn't have the mezzanine or if you weren't building the mezzanine could you have an indoor track >> we looked at an indoor track you can't have enough competition >> because the curves are too tight and if you make them a a 200 meter curve, you don't get enough turf to do it cuz then you got to make it the right radius >> and you get about 30 yards of >> um and you have to go opposite
059the track. So being built the track building at U if you are if you're ever there if you see it you can see that in field it's it's much skinnier than any school would really want to be playing on. just won't have the depth for um any long pass field hockey would be able to run plays for football or soccer. I mean it's just two you know space in between. So the design of this what it allows after all the different workings we can drop curtains now and they're really solid curtains here here here you can have a team going here team going here and track doing things or other sports doing things on the hard surfaces it just gives a lot of flexibility >> so right now we have 60 yards of turf in
060that >> yes >> is that what we're talking about >> and the option I mean you could drop cages down you can drop a ball down for a lacrosse to throw into you can so you can do a lot of things. >> Can you go back to the layout that the schematic uh site layout >> that one? Yeah. I'm just thinking like thinking out loud if we were to take the the building and move it up to where one of the not cover the whole twin turf but >> to get a hundred yard field inside. That's and then you're then you're getting away from that wetland too. >> You guys have talked about that. I'm sure. >> Yeah. The uh one of the channel >> because I would give up a little bit of one
061of the hundred yard exterior turfs to get a 100 yard interior turf. >> You know, >> we still haven't paid out bonds on the turf. Those are >> I know they're used, but you're you're getting a a bigger building >> for for the same amount >> that for about I don't know, Ryan, what was that a month? >> Yeah, we went through the exercise. >> Yeah, J. Okay. >> The only affordable way to do it will be supported. >> No, that's a license build. >> Yeah. It's I mean >> the limiting factor right now is the wetlands right to go out back >> with that money >> and obviously it's going to cost not saying it's free it's going to cost extra money >> double 100 yards you're double >> is the goal objectives when
062you guys did your study the overall need for the indoor stuff they um it's not competitional it's more for training >> for the offse right so it's training for the offse instead of going out to Brighton or going out to who knows where I don't know if we do the tradeoff you know that's just my if that's the objective training training training you don't train any more sports >> and this is just right now this is where we're at we're design we get into DD you can't be making changes >> well that's where we end up with the twin turfs were supposed to be a little bigger >> we reduced them we didn't put the bathroom in. We did things like that. >> Um when we got to the actual build >> and uh we
063did put that parking lot in right there, things like that. But realistically, this builds us a complex setup where you have a track, you have full grass or full turf field with all the track. We'll have to build the track events items in the in the endzone areas on the arches, which they fit in most places. There might be something we have to do off to the side. Um, but then you have your indoor space for almost any sport other than sports that can function in the gym or pool can do some of their offseason work. And we can run hundreds of kids at a time through the building, >> multiple agents. And that's the challenge of with trying to do something that would be competition based. Then your teams can't get you're always running
064events. And with mezzanine, building off of what you just said, not only can you get the people that you're saying, but you can get three more or four more upstairs. >> Oh, and that's that's huge. >> Realistically, we could have two rest or have a wrestling practice going on, have softball or baseball practicing, have soccer in one side, field hockey or lacrosse in another, have track working, have cheer practicing, and have a bank. Realistic. Yeah. That's the length of the building that could be scaled economically that because there's nothing but structure down the end of the building, you know, it's just that obviously it's money to do that, but now is the time to make that final, you know, size. >> Thanks. Appreciate the presentation. >> Great work. It's going to be exciting. >> Yeah,
065>> it really is. >> And so these are the these are the bids that are going to be coming to us in the next couple. >> You'll be getting more details. They're coming. We'll have We're going to have to wrestle through some decisions. I'm guessing facilities will be wrestling through some decisions on like this. >> Yeah. >> On the road. Um some of the parking, some lights. We'll have some decisions to make. >> Great. >> It'll be fun. Exciting film. >> Thank you for the update. >> You guys go back there. You're not going to get to see any of one thing. Well, those bathrooms outside until it's been done before like at the same time. >> Hopefully by spring you will be here in by November 3rd and you get to vote to build
066them and the construction can start pretty quick. >> Those bills will be huge. >> Oh, they're Yeah. >> I'll get them at the quad fields. >> Yeah. I mean, >> you know, my concern is we're spending all this money, but like in a few years it's going to be like, "Oh, wait. Why didn't we do that?" Like >> that's always >> like the quads without a bathroom like the portage John's and like the hot time when everyone needs to go to the bathroom >> summer time. >> Little League's got lots of money. Can they donate a trailer for us? >> Bathroom trailer. >> They pay for the portagons. Anyways, give them a great deal so our kids have some fun. >> Now eventually you might want to do that or that'll become part of the
067design of Creekide. >> Yeah. when you redo the middle school >> because like WY >> Brighton has some of those where they're right out of the bat like they're outdoor bathrooms that are inside essentially but like you can access them and that's so great. >> Yeah. So like we did that at Anchor and Beacon. You have uh bathrooms you could access from there. You can't even get in the building, >> right? >> But if you look at like the WY edition that was um this will be a bathroom coming towards the playground. There's no reason when you design Creekide that you put a bathroom that is accessible right from outside. There's no reason. That would be the right time to do it. >> Yeah. and that layout of that building based on soils and designs
068is going to be very different. I mean, there's a reason things are sinking in certain places. >> All right, thank you. Um, I do not have any updates, so we'll head over to the students. >> Um, fall sports are wrapping up, so there's a lot of big news within all sports. Uh, tennis did make it to states, so that was great. Um, regionals went good. me and a couple other from the girls team actually help it. So I was at the middle school site and some others around the high school site and we were able to run smoothly. Um so their states is Wednesday and Thursday this week in Midland. So hopefully they can get a couple tournament couple match wins and just have a good end to their season. >> Do they ended up
069being able to use the middle school courts? >> No. >> Chelsea Chelsea. Okay. >> Yeah. But it it worked out okay. The time difference really wasn't that bad. It was only like 15 minutes of it. Okay. It wasn't >> Yeah. >> Um, field hockey is also on their way to another state championship. They had a game today. Hopefully, it went well. >> It's in It's in Clarison right now. >> Oh, it's probably over at this point. >> But I mean, they've been doing well for the past couple of years and hopefully they can pull out another one. Um, this week volleyball has been selling their Dick Pink shirts. They're raising money for breast cancer awareness um for their game against Chelsea. So, you can come to the game, support, buy a shirt, raise some money,
070and just have a good time. >> What day is the game? >> I think it's the 23rd. So, >> Thursday. >> Um and then the production is also this week. So, they're performing McBth. I believe it's Thursday through Sunday. There's show times on Instagram. I'm guessing Facebook as well and different posters around town to look at those. So just go out, support your team, support the drama production, and just have a nice fun weekend. >> Yes. More on sports golf. >> You keep doing that. It's amazing. >> And what's incredible is it start girls golf started when I was in high school. >> Oh, they actually they won all of them. >> Well, since >> I mean, that's just incredible. So, sorry to hijack, >> but that is excellent football. Huge win against Pioneer. probably
071an even bigger win this week against Blushing. >> I'm pretty sure we have a we are going to host our first playoff game of the year that will be on Halloween. So that will be fun. Um Dexter's Michigan Youth and Government delegation. We went to Eastern Michigan to uh have this fall conference which is basically an introduction of program to new people and just like enhancing their skills. I had the opportunity to run for this youth governor like primary which I did win. So that's great. I can run for the full statewide position in February or March. Not actually sure. For marching band we have um our glow show. This is the second time we're doing it. We are very excited for that. That it'll be big. I bet we hope that'll be out out
072with the I think it's the >> it's next week. Wednesday I think the 29th day. Um, I believe the next day the orchestra and symphonic band will be performing at the CBA for their Halloween concert. Um, the symphonic band will just play one song combined with the orchestra and I believe the orchestra will be playing as well. More boring stuff. The NMSQT is tomorrow, PSAT tomorrow. Junior want to do that for some reason. And what else? Powderpuff unfortunately canled because of lightning. I'm not sure if it's rescheduled yet, but I know they are working on doing so. That's all I >> Thank you for the updates. >> You mind pushing the red button? >> I think the Halloween concert is on Tuesday in case you're thinking. >> Thank you. >> All right. >> Moving on
073to our consent agenda. Uh, we have the September 2025 budget report. All >> from the board of education receive the September 2025 budget report. Second that motion. We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? All those in favor of approving the consent agenda a agenda say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? >> All right. Action items. First off, um, the off schedule payment. The district experienced positive revenue over expense for the 2024 2025 school year. Consequently, this evening's packet includes letters of agreement with DAA, DEA, DESPA, and WWBD AA and a memorandum for individual contract employees all regarding a one-time offset payment. I'll move that the board of education approve the attached letters of agreement with the DAA, DEA, DESPA, and WWBD as well as a memorandum regarding individual contract employees. >> I'll second
074that. >> We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? And so our tradition and history is that the DEA has members serving on the finance committee which builds a great level of trust to understand what goes into making decisions on our finances. As part of that trust is that if we ever end up positive, we know at the end of the year we split it. Basically half goes into fund balance, half goes out to employees. the DEA contract outlines that it's split with the DEA and then um they chose this year that instead of taking a percentage per employee based on their own salaries to just make it even and then DAA followed suit and everybody went great. going to give instead of some jobs getting $42 and others getting $400 or $500, said
075everybody gets $150. And that's been how we've worked for a long time. It's great when it works out like that. And uh this is just one of those steps to make sure that that trust is always followed through. >> Very good. >> Um health committee roll, please. >> Mr. Oliver. >> Hi, >> Mr. Arnold. >> Hi, Mrs. Rley. >> Hi, >> Mr. Sabola. >> Hi, >> Mrs. Riser. >> Hi, >> Mrs. Aero. >> Hi. >> All right, moving on to our 2017 bond work roofing upgrades. Our packet included a bid summary and recommendation from Ranger regarding roofing upgrades. >> I move that the board award the 2017 bond series 2 roofing upgrades project to RDK Lines, Inc. for $24,320 with a 15% contingency of $3,648 for a total amount not to exceed $27,968 to be
076funded by 2017 bond proceedings. >> A second. Do we have a motion and a second? >> As a district, we own multiple houses. So we have what used to be the blue house which was the Avery house which is now the gray house that rangers in instead of a trailer house running a construction trailer. We cited it where building trades did a bunch of work on it. We need to put it needs a roof really and then the house Mrs. Naylor's house at the corner. We purchased that house decade or two ago in order to add track space events. uh but it needs a roof and gutters. So this is just replacing roof gutters as needed and managed by the owner scrub. >> Okay. >> Any questions? >> What's your roll call vote please? >>
077Mr. Arnold. >> Hi. >> Mrs. By >> hi. >> Mr. Oliver. >> Hi. >> All right. Moving on to our policies, second reading. Our packet includes draft policies 3311, naming school buildings, portions of buildings, structures, or facilities, 5418, grading, 5424, educational options, and 5501, student fundraising. These were approved for first reading on October 6th, 2025. I move that the board of education approved policies 311, 5418, 5424, 5521 for second reading and final approval. I second that motion. >> Um, any discussion? >> I do just want to note question. >> Yeah, we did have a question about the student fundraising policy 5501. Um, people uh a question was raised about um keeping a line D in there which requires the board approve the distribution or liquidation of monies. And I wanted to let you know that
078I had um checked in with Chris and that this is normally done through our budget approval process. This is just a standard thing the board does. So it was recommended to leave it in there. >> All right. Any other questions? Let's do a roll of public. >> Mrs. Burgley. >> I riser. >> I sa >> I sold. >> Hi. All right, last up, um, Rashki retirement. Our packet includes a retirement letter from senior project manager Sharon Rashki effective October 31st, 2025. >> I move that the board of education acknowledge Dr. Sharon Rashki's retirement. >> I'll second that. >> We have a motion and a second. Any discussion? day job. I think she's looking for another job. I think we can find some place for him. >> Sharon has done an incredible job for the district
07925 plus years and actually the multi-generational complex project really was kind of I don't know of many people that could have pulled off what she facilitated. So, for $10 million, that wasn't even our money, >> we purchased a 50,000 53,000 square foot 10-year-old uh state-of-the-art facilities or uh fitness facility, 7 and a half acres of land. Built a 9,000 square foot senior center. Gave the seniors startup money to be able to fund operations. built a fund, a reserve fund to maintain those operations and paid all the legal cost of breaking up two condo associations and fed, we had HUD funds, we had state funds, which were federal funds, another set of federal funds for $10 million. When you start approving bond projects, wait till you see what $10 million by not >> that, you know,
080and it maintained it in the community. um which had added to community resources and really Sharon it wasn't going to happen unless someone Sharon or someone with the history in the district and the skill set and the personal passion to make it happen. So Sharon has done great things for our district, the community, and just thankful for all the work she's done and happy for her. >> Absolutely. I know the seniors were very appreciative of her guiding them along. >> It's an unbelievable swan song. >> It is. She could add it to the >> It is. Um, anyone else? We can vote. >> Mr. Mr. >> Hi, >> Mr. Riser. >> Hi, Mr. >> Hi, >> Mr. Alre. >> Hi, >> Mr. Arnold. >> Hi, Mr. >> Hi. >> All right, moving on to our
081discussion item. We have the MASB delegate assembly resolutions. Our packet um included the 2025 MASB assembly resolutions. These were shared at the October 6th meeting. Um Daniel Alvarey will be the DCS voting delegate. And if anyone has any um feedback to give to Dan prior to the meeting so that he can use that opportunity to share Dexter's view, this would be a good time to do it. >> Good work. >> Well, thank you all for represent. >> Yeah, there weren't too many I will just say there weren't too many amendments and adjustments to the current set of bylaws. Um I can't remember if we had anyone at the meeting last year but Jennifer >> went so we've had a Dexter representative there for now at least several years running um and so there weren't a
082lot of changes to this particular set but I will say from experience that what happens is that other boards bring amendments to the floor and so Dan will have to stay on his toes to figure out whether Dexter needs to vote for against the amendments that uh are being presented on the floor. So, thank you for doing this, Dan. >> Trust my way out there, right? Wow. >> Just don't don't mess it up. Just >> don't mess it up. >> It was honestly the most awesome display of Robert's rules that I have ever seen. I mean, they have a parliamentarian there and it is just like someone keeping track of what's happening. >> I get point of order if I say something. >> Just follow the direction. >> All right. >> It's in your cabinet.
083>> Yeah. Sorry, I just showed in the parliamentary. >> Oh, yeah. The chart read. >> Yeah. >> So, it's in the middle of your stack. >> We'll do it after. Yeah. Well, all right. I can take mine. >> That's right. >> Moving on to our second opportunity for public participation. As no one has joined us, going to assume that we're moving through that and moving on to more comments. Anyone have any comments they want to share? >> No. No. >> All right. Um, we have information items in our packet. We have the MASB assembly resolutions. Um, and we have a flyer highlighting the CTE openhouse. I guess that's >> there's a they added one this year. >> Three locations that should go to. >> Perfect. >> Yeah. >> Um, yes, for tomorrow night. Um, we
084do not have a close session tonight, so we can adjourn. Thanks everybody very much. >> Yeah, right. >> Oh, yeah. for their Andre.
