All meeting order. You all rise for the pledge. >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. All right. Can we do a roll call? Mr. Wonderjam, I appreciate you taking that for us. Happy to do it. Wonder Jim here. Gardine >> here. >> Campbell >> here. >> Dehan >> here. Highower >> here. Venick and Stephace are absent. Thank you. Forum. Please note, as a courtesy to members of the audience of the board of education, uh please silence your cell phones. public will only be able to speak during public comment if signed up. Anything? Thank you very much. Uh first item is the approval of agenda. Can I get a motion? >>
So moved with an addendum. >> Okay. Uh due to the fact that there is one agenda item for all of the master agreements with the number of board members here that may have a financial interest in a specific category. >> Mhm. Uh, I move that we do we separate them where GA SSA school year secretary and food service are the first segment. So that would be segment five D1 and then fullyear administrative professionals would be 5D2 and pair of professionals would be 5D3 >> support. >> Okay. So if we did that um I need a motion to approve the amendment. I move to approve the amendment. >> Okay. And I need a second. >> Second. >> Perfect. Gota. >> So I just want to make sure so I have it correct when I talk about
it. So we got the GA, the GE SSA, the school year secondary, and food food service would be in on 5D1. >> Correct. >> Okay. Then 5D2, we've got full year administrative professionals. >> Correct. And 5D3 would be pair professionals. >> Correct. All right. Got it. >> Just so we can get it approved. Yep. Mhm. All right. So that would the the amendment was approved. >> Um and then so we've got a motion on the floor for the overall, right? So we need >> second. >> Okay. All those in favor? >> Yes. >> Opposed. All right. Motion passes. Uh on item number two, uh the reports agenda, board member reports. Mr. Not a whole lot other just to say thank you to Roger, the first of uh probably all of us, but uh it has
been awesome to get to know you and great human being, great leader. I really, you know, really appreciate you getting to know you and uh the role that you've done for our district and for our students. So, thank you. >> Thank you. Appreciate it. >> And then just football camp started last night. If any of you know any high school football players that that aren't there and want to play football, it goes through Wednesday this week and then they have another one in August. But that's it for me. I >> think what Big Man camp was last week, I think, or something. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> All right. Great. Amy, >> um I don't have a report for myself, but I have this little thing right here. Um this came from Sally. She couldn't be
here today, so she asked me if I would read this. has happy retirement, happy new beginnings. And uh it just says, "Dear Rogers, celebrate your accomplishments, enjoy the newfound freedom, and always remember what a positive difference you've made." And she wrote, "No truer statement was ever made with gratitude this entire school district, this I'm going to show you now. You ready? Ready to help?" Okay. So, we all know that Roger loves to involve our kids, but they can never see over the st the podium. So, this step stool uh will be uh given a plaque on the front or here. I'm not really sure, but it's going to say in honor of Roger Barup's service to Granville Public Schools, he gave all a step up and then he's going to have your years of service
and then kids will get to step on it. And so, we're going to put this over here. I don't think we have any short shorties today. >> Well, Heather, but >> yeah. And um and then I also um so this is for you, sir. Thank you so much for It's one of my favorite favorite parts about being on the board is when we have those kids coming in. So that's for you from Sally. And um one of my favorite things about Roger is when he gets to talk about his beautiful wife and his kids and his mom. I really love all your stories about your mom. But I really love that we got to share the other day that Josh is in Grand Haven and you were on the beach looking at all the kites.
>> So I'm going to tell you to go fly kites. >> All right. >> Yeah. Thank you for Thank you for everything you've done. You're a good man. >> Y appreciate it. >> Y >> All right. I'm going. >> All right. >> That's all I got. >> All right. Thank you, Bob. You know what? From the very first time when I was sitting over there and you were sitting right where that table is, where she is. I remember that. That was such an enjoyable conversation. The very first one. second one got better and every other one was either gotten better or it's been a challenge for both of us. Um you've taken this district uh just to a very different place in many in many instances very positive some beyond your control and some within
your control and wherever it was within your control you always steered us in the right direction so and I appreciate that very much. Um I I think two of the most challenging times that this district has had in your tenure is uh number one was co >> rough time especially for you. >> Mhm. Um and then how you dealt with um the effect of social media um kind of becoming and trying to control things. Mhm. >> You know, it it it it tried to present how everything should run and you managed that exceptionally well and I appreciate that because um you understood who we are. You definitely understand who we are. There's no doubt in my mind. But um uh thanks for everything. I mean I you >> really mean it. Thank you. Thank you.
Appreciate it, Bobby. That's all I have. >> Thank you, Amy. >> Yeah. Um, not, you know, not a report necessarily from me. Um, it's been pretty quiet, which has been lovely. Um, but yes, thank you, Roger. I appreciate it. I appreciate really appreciate your openness and willingness to communicate and to always be willing to talk to anybody that sends you an email. Uh, I know I probably sent you a couple before I was on this board and you know I I oftentimes you send those you don't expect to get a response. Um, but you always responded and I think that means a lot to our community to the parents. Um, so thank you. >> Thank you. Appreciate it. >> Thank you. Um, as far as updates go, just a lot of uh graduation parties going
on. So, it's fun to go out and celebrate the kids um you know and and as they move on and that mine is the last one was this year. So, it's it's kind of bittersweet. It's bittersweet as things are going on. So, um I too wanted to take a moment and just recognize um and celebrate Raj Raj. It's Raj. It's Raj, right? Still Raj retires from Granville public schools after 11 11 years service. Is that right? 11 years service. All right. uh on behalf of all of us, you know, thank you for your dedicated leadership um in the many ways you have supported our students, staff, families, and our school community. Um during your time in Granville, you helped guide the district through a period of meaningful growth and change. Um you saw some major
district projects uh uh that we've we've we've added including new school facilities, many campus upgrades, um work that will benefit students and families for years years to come. Um you also provide to steady leadership as Bob mentioned right through some major challenging times in public education CO9 pandemic. Um in that time filled with uncertainty uh your commitment to the well-being of students, staff and families help Granville schools continue moving forward with care and purpose and really leading the way here in West Michigan I feel. Um under your leadership, Granville public schools has earned both state and national academic uh rec recognition for our academics, athletics, and artistics um programs and for the quality and and performance. Um those accomplishments reflect not only strong programs and high standards, but the culture of teamwork, trust, and student
centered service that you have really helped foster throughout this whole district. Uh your commitment, steady leadership, and care for others have made a lasting difference. the impact you have had will not be forgotten and your presence and grant will will be remembered with deep appreciation. Um you're the only superintendent my kids really know, right? And so it means a lot um you know the leadership that you've provided over these years. Um as you begin this next chapter, we wish you good health, happiness, and plenty of time to enjoy the people, places, and activities that mean the most to you. And we know you already got started here this past spring, which is awesome, >> right? You know, hope to have you hear many more stories about those types of trips. Um, I hope your retirement
brings you some well- earned rest, new adventures, and many more memories. So, congratulations, Roger, and wish you all the best in a joyful and fulfilling retirement. So, thank you. >> Thank you. >> Appreciate it. >> And that's all I have. So, Roger, it's on to you. >> Okay. Wow. Appreciate all all the kind words and uh people have been so great the last, you know, few months really. Um, it's been wonderful. Um, I'd like to start by thanking the original board members who believed in me to select me as their superintendent 11 years ago. Barb Palmer, Christy Buck, Bob Perski, Rob Blitch, John Garberino, Karen Shidler, and of course this guy sitting next to me, Bob Wonderjam. Um, thank you to those seven people. I always, you know, you always have I've tried to explain
this to people there. There's something about that first group who says, "We believe in you. We believe you're that person and you you always have a bond that a lot of times people can't understand." And I think I'll always have a special bond with that group because uh I was an assistant superintendent and they believed in me just like you're believing in your next leader. And I'm sure that bond is going to be something that you'll have and it's hard to explain, but you'll have um forever. I would also like to thank all the board members I've had the pleasure of working with over the years, including the great people around this table and a couple that are absent. Um your focus on kids in this wonderful community are second to none. Thank you for
your partnership, your friendship, and I just I just deeply appreciate all of you and your focus on kids. That's that's what separates you. I I can't think of too many instances where, you know, even if um things seem a little off track, that people don't get back to focusing on kids and making the right decisions. So, I appreciate that. uh to our exceptional educators and employee groups who make the experience uh for our kids amazing. Thank you for your teamwork and your continued focus on making Granville um for kids a topnotch place. Um you will greatly be missed. uh to our administrative team including our district administration, John, Heather, Scott, Caroline, Jason, and uh soon to be Mike and uh Adam, of course. Uh you have been the greatest team uh that a superintendent could
ever ask for. Um and I know this district is in good hands with your continued leadership. Thanks to our principles, our assistant principles, our supervisors for working with us to create a we not me culture. Your expertise, collaborative spirit, and your friendship are simply the best. And finally, to our community as a whole, including the most amazing kids on the planet. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the most wonderful place a person could live and work in. You've been the exclamation mark to my wonderful journey in this profession. I'm saying goodbye as your superintendent, but I'm not saying goodbye as a citizen of this wonderful community. I'll continue to support our great schools and the people who entered their hallways. Thanks again for everything from a forever Granville Bulldog. >> Nice.
>> Very nice. >> You know what's really interesting? You didn't turn gray. >> Yes, I did. >> No, you didn't. >> Okay. >> You took it well. >> Oh, thanks. >> You know, the president always turns gray. Turns gray. >> True. >> All right. Fantastic. Okay. Um, moving on to the next items here. Any old business? No business. No old business. All right. Number four, consent action agenda. Can I get a motion? >> Support. >> All those in favor? Yes. >> Opposed? >> Motion passes. 5A. Uh, the mechanical upgrade project. Uh it is recommended the board of education to authorize Owens a Kimble OAK to issue a letter of intent in the amount indicated to the contractor listed pending confirmation that all requirements of the contract documents have been met. Upon receipt by OAK of
all appropriate documentation, it is further recommended that the board of educ board of education award a contract to the contractor as specified below. You can read those numbers. Uh the qualified bid package from the contractor specified spec specified above total $719,531 contingency of $71,953 is included bringing the project total to $791,484. Can I get a motion? >> So moved. >> Support. >> Okay. And Heather and representation are here. >> Yes. So, um we are going to replace the boilers at East and West with this um uh bid and the chiller at Century Park and a cooling tower at the high school. Um I do want to note that um East Elementary out of those buildings is the only building that has uh control logic. So, um, of the buildings that are being worked on, we
have other buildings that have control logic, but that's why there's a breakout specifically for them because it is proprietary to that system that's already there. Um, we we went through post-bid interviews. I say we, but they went through postbid interviews. Um, this is a first design work project um, completed by Fanny Howe in the district. Um, and so they were part of those postit interviews as well. uh looking to begin this work after Labor Day and will be wrapped up by the holiday break end of December. So um the full agenda uh results are follow that you can look at or have looked at I'm sure. So >> um with this being the first Fanning Howie, how did it go? >> Um the reports that I I wasn't a large part of it. I know
Nolan and Arlin were a big part. Um the design work they had no uh no issues through that process. Um I think from an architect standpoint from what what we look for is obviously in the beginning like making sure we're looking at efficiencies and um helping to get that um budget down as best we can and as tight as we can. Um but then like it doesn't end there for the architect, right? like there's change orders sometimes that are needed and necessary when you get into the work in the field and just hopefully their their response will continue to be um timely and uh positive. So >> So if you could just make a note um when the projects are done just come back to the board with how they did. >> Sure. >> I
mean they were picked number two. um this is our first project and uh let's let's just make sure that you know the board understands the selection positive one. Mhm. >> Um so a few years ago, maybe three, um the cooling tower at the high school was on the agenda for repair because it was felt that repair was all that was needed at that time. >> You remember that? >> I do. I'm I'm going to need your help on that cuz I feel like it was more than 3 years ago for the cooling tower cuz there's the chiller and the cooling to tower. So bear with me. That's not my great area of expertise like it is theirs. So you guys mind speaking to that? Was it the chiller >> 3 years ago? It was the
cooling tower 3 years ago. >> Okay. >> Um that was leaking quite substantially and we're going through >> um few bars of chemicals to replace that. So we had to reseal twice. Um still we can go in now. Um but much better off than once. Um we spoke with Hrix which was trained quite a bit and all with their chillers and um they had time to building. So >> Oh really? >> 30 years. >> Wow. >> What's the normal lifespan of something for the building that size? >> 30 years. >> All 30. >> Okay. All right, that's fine. >> Cool. Well, >> no pun intended. >> No, it wasn't. You're going to miss. >> I am. I am. I'm so glad that there's no one between us tonight. This is good. Mhm. >> Um so
we had this discussion in the past with regard to uh the installation of the boilers and that what part will our staff have on that replacement piece? Where where where are they? Are they in on the installation and the change out? >> No, they are not. um the requirements and the certifications needed to like from the state to make sure everything is a-ok okay I mean they'll be involved in the process of what goes in and what if there's an issue or something like that but the actual physical labor of it no >> okay >> and that's probably tied to the warranty piece too >> it's tied to warranty and and certified boiler >> inspections and >> all of that. >> I believe that's what we did last time too, right? So, we had talked
about that and if it would save money or if it would be bad in the long run and yeah, remember that. >> Well, you have to be certified. I mean, yeah, there's special certification for >> but they will be watching and they'll know, right? Like they're in there. They're >> they have um is it bi-weekly um construction meeting updates on all of these projects? Um and it's not just just our team and the the contractors. It's um OAK the um architect will be involved with that too. And yeah, >> those are all my questions. >> Thanks. >> So we can carve on the side of the new tower 30 more years, right? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Well, fingers already underneath 30 years. >> No. There you go. >> I'll come back around 90 and see
if it is. >> There you go. There you go. All right. Any other questions? All right. With this quantity, let's do a roll call vote. >> Gardine, >> yes. >> Dan, >> yes. >> Campbell, >> yes. >> Wonder Jim, yes. Don or Hibar? >> Yes. >> Passes. Thank you very much. Uh on to 5B, the paytoplay fee fees. It is recommended the board of education approve the proposed athletic participation fees starting in the 2026 2027 school year as follows. Middle school uh $45 is current proposed 60 moving this high school one from 60 to 80 and the family cap from 210 to 250. Uh can I get a motion? >> So move it. >> So um it's been a long time since we brought this back to you. um and one of the districts on
this list actually reached out and everybody started filling it back out um with the movement. So, as we look at the where we land, we tried to rank um low to high. We're we're pretty much right in the middle um in all three categories with these increases. um you know over time we have increased transportation costs, we have increased coaching costs associated with coaches, all all of the things. So um I met with Charlie and um his team and we we worked through through the additional amounts that were listed in the action item. Does the district office get any information about hardship cases? Do they bring that to admin? >> Um well, they they don't necessarily come right to us and say, "Hey, can we do it?" But they have their student assistance funds. They
have other um fundraisers that each sport does and they'll utilize those. >> Okay. >> So, I mean, you know, our free and reduced is around 30% districtwide. Um, so I would say probably about 30% of our air athletes >> are need some sort of assistance. >> Okay. >> That's the beauty of the senior survivor made it. I mean they made so is it 90 >> two this year. >> So question on all this in in the new world and new era of NIL >> NIL. >> Oh >> sponsorships >> name image likeness. >> Absolutely. From the high school level. >> Yeah. They just brought >> so what yeah what any opportunities there for us because I I look at it this right and and it just kind of piqu my interest when you look at
like a Hamilton or even a Holland right with such low fees are they getting sponsorship from somewhere that that you know we should be looking at something like that. >> So I I think what you're seeing there too is um probably more a higher need in in that area different demographic than ours. I think that's probably part of it. I don't think the NIL at the high school level has been out there enough to to answer that question in terms of districts getting sponsorships, but I think we do have a board policy or we have a guideline at the high school level anyway. Like kids can't just use the G in the background to run their NIL deals and that type of thing. So, um >> you can't use anything that's connected to the school
for deals. >> Okay. Um, so to your point, can we find some sponsorships that might be worth pay for some of that? Yes. >> Put a patch on the uniform. >> It would be outside of the NIL type of a thing, right? >> Yeah. That would be more revenue generating for the district to cover cost >> of athletics. Yeah. >> Well, I didn't know like some of the collectives how the collectives were working, right? You those funds, right? They have those collectives that from what I understood, you know, help pay obviously to pay the athletes, but I mean can it also be purposed for paying I mean you could say yeah we'll sponsor you at $80 a a player right you know so I mean there's ways to get creative and it's like you know
we've always been very creative here right and I have always appreciate that we looked for new ways to do things and it's is that an opportunity for us >> Michigan's a very slow role with uh NIL and the collective piece isn't there It's it's we're trying to learn from places like Texas that have a lot of it and and some other places. So, um it's been a a very slow roll. MHSA has certain guidelines and we have, you know, different policy or guidelines based on that. So, uh it be interesting to see where we go with it all >> at the high school level. Um hopefully not as wild west as uh college football and college sports in particular have gone. Um >> but we'll we'll see. >> Let's tell Charlie get on it. Right.
New blood. Let's go. So, so the piece with with that isn't isn't that more isn't that more I'm going to say issue slash opportunity slash headache uh when it comes to the southern states specifically more of the SEC where that area I mean football year round I mean even from Georgia >> and Florida I mean they're they're going year round That's that's Do we even have >> I would say more and more of our high school sports are year round sport players and one of the things that we talked about when when this first started coming out um is which sports are they going to look at first and it looks like they'll probably hit like basketball first in Michigan football in Michigan hockey doesn't look like it's really up to speed yet but um
yeah it's uh it's going to change a lot of the face of that and and especially when we're looking at like private schools that can recruit their kids and have teams that highlight them and it's going to be an interesting couple of years in sports. >> You know, one of the reasons so Devin Booker came was at West was in John's class. Um his dad kept him until he was in sixth grade and then he moved him to Kansas. He moved him south cuz he wanted him in the SEC. he wanted him in that lower cuz that's where his bounty was in the long run. Um it was advantageous for him. But I don't know. It's it's very interesting. Very interesting. I'm kind of glad Michigan's kind of slow on that because >> because the
NCAA has it in such a mess that they mismanage the entire thing and it's got >> so many problems. >> Interesting. That was interesting statement. always looking for ways to I mean but we never really had too many sponsors in our stadiums right and then all of a sudden we started to get a lot more sponsors in our stadiums right all the advertisement around you know it's it's just the next >> the next thing that will happen right is you'll start to get b you'll start to get patches on our uniforms right >> like a robo-dog >> absolutely right I mean we do it in a lot of places I think and it's like it is >> it is a lot of times like you said Raj got to get the policies and procedures caught
up with what's actually happening Someone's going to push it. Someone's going to push it this year, right? You know, someone's gonna um it's just a matter of Yeah. All right. Then where do we go with it? Right. To your point, Bob, I don't know there's enough eyeballs, right, for anyone to make it. But also, when you see a lot of these different groups and organizations, it's someone's kid, right, is on the team and I got to get it. >> Yeah. You know, so we're going to sponsor four years, right? Yeah. Absolutely. >> Who made the playoffs? >> Every coach's kid. >> Allstar team. Y >> I saw that sponsored by them. There you go. Y >> absolutely. >> Just something to add to this is I was talking to Coach Teagle last week and the
football boosters donated $20,000 to the seventh and eighth grade football to buy helmets for the players because up until now the parents had to had to do all that. So now >> that sounds >> for the most part the players shouldn't have to buy helmets this year. >> So does the boosters pick up the tab for all the players? They >> the athletic participation, >> not the participation, but they they did the the helmets at $20,000 for the helmets. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Uh to clarify before you vote, sorry, I had a typo in my table. It does say 300, but it is 250 as written in the action item. So, apologize for that. >> Okay, any other questions? All those in favor? >> Yes. Opposed? >> Motion passes. On to 5C. The technology
protection plan is recommended the board of education approve the revised technology protection plan as outlined on the next page. Can I get a motion? So move. >> Now Walt's going to bring us I'll let Walter talk about this one because this was this was his revision. Uh so as you can see um when we first implemented 1:1 devices back in 2013 at the time we rolled out a technology protection plan for students. So if that covers that would cover things like accidental damage to the device. Um over that time period we haven't increased that fee at all. Um, this past school year we implemented more of an uh online payment system for that technology protection plan. And that uh pro that process um caused us to go back and look at costs for repair and
devices. And um we also did go out and survey other districts as far as what their technology protection plan runs. And um most other districts are around that $30 mark. So that's what we're proposing here. Um, another change that a lot of other districts had implemented is historically if you chose not to buy the technology protection plan for your device and then something happened to it, you can then buy the technology protection plan at that time. >> This change that we're implementing would mean that parents have until September 30th to purchase the technology protection plan and then if they choose not to, you can't go back and buy it again after the fact. So then it would be a full cost repair. >> So well um what's the frequency? How many how many times >>
how many times are we in both categories, right? >> Covered, not covered in a year. >> So I can give you numbers as far as we offer it starting in fifth grade through 12th grade. Um and of all of those students, it's roughly 3,000 students in the district. Um right around 600 students elect to purchase the protection plan. And then how many failures do we have? >> Um I don't have exact numbers for that. I can get that for you. I'll say that >> I can tell you how much revenue we brought in for the current school year. >> I don't care about the revenue. >> Okay. >> I care about the instance. >> Well, yeah. I guess what I'm saying is part of the incidence is generating generates the revenue, right? So the >>
So you're trying to balance it since we haven't raised it. No, I'm saying you're talking about how many instances >> have we had a failure that's been reported. >> So failure >> whether they have coverage or not >> in the sense that yeah is there's multiple types of failure. So for example the insurance will or the technology protection plan will cover um non-intentional damage. So I would say that is relatively low. Um, intentional damage unfortunately is is something that I think is a little more frequent. >> Really? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Who provides us insurance? >> This is us. >> This is our own selfunded technology. We can't It's not insurance. >> Okay. Sorry. >> Sorry. There's there's different rules if you call that insurance that we have to follow. So, it is it
really is just protecting them from a potential >> um pain alert. Okay, >> that's really interesting. >> Yeah, and as far as damage numbers, um I again I can get those exact numbers for you, but I will say, you know, at the elementary level, at starting the fifth grade level even, we don't see a lot of that at Oakstown at the elementary levels cuz they don't take the devices home. Middle school is where we see most of that. And then at the high school, it kind of drops off. >> Yeah. No, that makes perfect sense actually to me. I don't think it's going to startle any administrator in the room with that either. Interesting. Very interesting. Rambunctious boys. Fair enough. >> Good call. >> Any other questions on this one? >> All right. All those
in favor? >> Yes. Opposed? >> Motion passes. Thanks, W. >> 5D. And as a reminder, we're going to be splitting this to 5D1. uh 5D2 and 5D3. So, it is recommended the board at the board of education the board approve the wage increases between the Granville education association, Granville Education Sports Staff Association full uh school year secretaries and Granville or food service workers um in Granville public schools in the 2025 2027 master agreements. the district the wage opener for all employee groups in the 2026 2027 wage streets group are bulleted below. So we're going to do uh 5D1 first uh which again includes the GA. The uh G SSA uh the school year secretary and food service. Can I get a motion support? All right. Any questions on this discussion? Going once, going twice. All
right. All those in favor? >> Yes. >> Opposed? >> Motion passes. >> On to 5D2. That is the full year administr administrative professionals. Can I get a motion? >> So move. >> Support. >> All those in favor? Yes. >> Yes. >> Opposed. No. Sorry. >> Opposed. >> Motion passes. >> No. >> Abstain. So, >> I just got to say abstain. >> Yes. >> All right. I abstain. >> Okay. Thank you. >> I didn't say anything, but I didn't mind. All right. Motion passes. On to 5D3. The pair of professionals. Can I get a motion? So moved >> support. >> Any discussion? All those in favor say yes. Yes. >> Yes. >> Opposed. Any abstensions? >> Abstain. >> Motion passes. >> All right, that concludes everything we have. Um, no public comment still. So, the next
board meeting of the Granville Board of Education will be Monday, July 20th, 2026. uh at 700 p.m. at the administration building. We are obviously off for the July 4th and Raj just one more time thank you for everything to do >> and John >> welcome. >> Thank you. Yes, >> we are ajourned.
