001Okay, welcome to the board meeting of Wednesday, February 21st, 2024 at 6 PM. It's actually 6:02. Um, our we're get your stuff together here. Still running in the door. Our mission statement in Taylor is to educate, engage, and empower those we serve. Our vision statement, we want to be the innovative destination district where all succeed. We're going to call to order at 603. Our superintendent is on vacation today, just so you know. And Mr. uh Meyers will be a little late. Mr. Thomas >> here. >> Mrs. Thomas >> here. Mrs. Shufelt >> here. >> Mr. Wright >> here. >> Miss Black is here. Mr. Keith >> here. >> Mr. Myers will be a little late. Okay, if everybody will please stand for the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
002and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> That is just the one part that still flips me out that nobody starts the pledge until I do. In first grade, that would have freaked me out. Okay, tonight we will start out with our student representatives and speaking to that will be Miss Lynn Borg, our principal at McDow's Elementary. >> The applause is for these kiddos, but um thank you for having us tonight. Tonight I have brought my student coun several student council members and their families. Um student council is led by Miss Pater, our third grade teacher, and Mr. Hamilton, who is our fourth grade teacher. They do a variety of things in the building. They've organized Valentine's. We do a spirit week where
003everyone can participate that's kind of not based around holidays, per se. Um, we have a news crew in the morning because we still use our PA. So, they're on every day and wherever they go, they kind of are extensions of us and carry the message that they matter. um that everyone at McDow matters and it's part of our daily um it's just how we start our day. So, I'm gonna bring them up collectively and then introduce them individually if that's okay with everyone. All right. Okay. Mr. Ian, >> Mr. Dun Everybody come back. It's kind of >> Why don't you guys come on up here? Um, from the board, Mrs. Shufeld has something else for you guys. I am better. Okay, kids. The Mrs. Shufelt has something for you. Thank you for all you do,
004guys. Keep up all the good work. And Mrs. Borg, keep up the good work. And your and your uh student and your >> Am I echoing? >> Okay. And your uh faculty advisors who did. >> All right. Next on our agenda is our good news and that is going to be Taylor High School versus the Taylor Police Department and presenting that will be Mrs. Scopchinski, principal of the high school. >> Thank you. >> Good evening everybody. I'm Officer Dunlar. If you don't know me, I'm the school resource officer. You probably seen my car around or me around doing all kinds of fun stuff. Um, so yeah, we came up with this idea as kind of a community outreach and turned it into a charity towards the Griffin Pantry at the high school. So March 15th,
0057 PM, Taylor PD versus Taylor High. It's going to be a good time. I'll be out there and practicing up a little bit. So we're we're going to give them a hard time. We're not going to go easy on them. I've been researching at all the home games, taking notes, so I know my targets out there. Um $10 for adults, five for students at the door. We're not doing pre-sale. We're just trying to keep it simple, trying to keep all the money with the school. Um so there's that. Anything you want to add to that? Is there any >> um just that we're really excited today? We found out that the pep band is also going to be performing. So it'll be quite the event. Um second went out and purchased this trophy for the
006event. So we're hoping hopefully the person high school so police wins. Yeah, it goes in my office if high school wins and they probably they don't need to make a spot for it. So it'd be a good time. And then kind of branching off that um someone from McDonald's reached out to our department. I don't know if you saw the Facebook post about the police night at the Ecourse McDonald's over by Crunch Fitness. So, I'll be there as well. I do a lot of things. I can work at McDonald's. I can play basketball. So, from 4 to 7 PM March 5th, myself and a few others will be working. And 20% of everything brought in in that three-hour period is going to be donated to the food pantry as well. So, it's kind of a
007little sidebar to what we're already doing. >> So, thank you. >> Well, thank you for doing all you do for the food pantry. The food pantry is kind of near and dear to my heart. Uh, if anybody knows anything about me, I've done Meals on Wheels for 20 plus years. >> Awesome. Yeah. When we came up with the idea, we were trying to figure out, all right, okay, we're do a charity thing, but like where should the money go? And it kind of felt like an obvious choice. So, >> no, feeding people that need food is >> Yeah, absolutely. >> the best ever. >> Well, thanks for letting us come and present tonight. Make it out. See you guys there. com. >> Mr. Wright would like the floor. >> Um, I just wanted to say
008thank you to the McDow students for coming tonight. We love seeing the student leaders across our district. And I just want to say that thank you for leading in your school. Thank you for being the people that other students can go to. And please don't forget that leadership does not stop at McDow. You can continue to be a leader at middle school, high school, and beyond. Please, please keep that ambition in you and make sure that you're always doing good for others and yourself as well. So, thank you for being here tonight. Seriously, thank you, Michelle. We know this is a school night, so if you'd like to leave at this time, this there'll be a little less fun stuff coming down the pike here. If you want to stay, that's fine, too. But, um,
009we know it's a school night and we have homework and bedtimes. Okay. Next on the agenda, Mr. Wright. >> All right. We have item number five, the revision approval of the agenda policy 0166. Is there a motion to approve the agenda? >> Motion by Mr. Heath. Is there support? >> Support by Mr. Thomas. Mrs. Thomas. >> Yes. >> Miss Shufeld. >> Yes. >> Mr. Wright is a yes. Miss Block. >> Yes. >> Mr. Heath. >> Yes. >> Mr. Meyers is absent. Mr. Thomas, >> yes. >> That carries. 6. >> Okay, we'll go right into discussion items number six on the agenda. And if I I'm just going to preface this. Um, if I don't say your name correctly, don't take it personally. Not good at that. Not my strong suit. Number one, overnight field trip
010request for DECA. Uh, Jennifer Randall will be speaking to that. She's in person. >> Hello. Can you hear me? Okay. >> Yep. >> Awesome. So, I'm Jenna Randall. I'm the DECA advisor at Taylor High School, and we are preparing to attend our national international uh career development conference in Anaheim, California. Woohoo. So, this is a really life-changing experience for our students and we are thrilled to be able to take them. So, uh, we are preparing to, um, go to our state competition in March and that will help us determine a final number that will advance to our national competition in April. And our students will have the opportunity to compete nationally with their peers and they will also have the opportunity to attend different conferences to really gain a depth of functional knowledge as well
011as leadership. So, it's a really great experience for the students that are able to attend. Upon return, our students will be able to uh pay their knowledge forward. And some of the ways that we plan on having them do that is mentoring. So, they will share uh their experience with other members of DECA within our chapter. And they'll really be able to share insights and strategies that helped them be successful. Um and then also presentations and workshops. So really sharing what DECA is and uh inspiring you know the more folks to join us and and be involved um social media creating content uh really about their experience raising awareness about the great things that DECA does with emerging leaders and uh really helped to strengthen our chapter. All of those students that are able to
012go will have the opportunity to do peer-to-peer networking, uh, which is just a great experience for them to collaborate and just a lot of mutual growth to take place. Um, our students will also have the opportunity to earn scholarship money. Uh, so those that are able to qualify to attend and then those that potentially win uh have the opportunity to earn even more. Um, so we're really excited. We have um some really great activities for them to pay that experience forward and we do have um two chaperones slated to go. Um again, I mentioned this is Anaheim, California, April 27th through the 30th and um we'll just make sure that we have our students. We for sure have four that are going and after the state competition in March, we could potentially have up to
013eight >> if they win. >> Yeah. What questions do you have for me? >> Other than how many um students are going to states right now? >> 11. >> There's 11. >> So, do you only get a maximum of eight to go to nationals? >> If it we have four that are go that are slated to go right now, but we could have eight that advance if they win. >> Okay. >> So, it's going to be a game time. It's going to be a tight window of decision making. Okay. >> Uh to identify those that are actually able to go. But those that have secured a position are aware >> and they are thrilled. >> That's awesome. >> Yes. >> And um it's an out-of pocket cost, the $1,100. >> Uh we actually have a
014blend of uh grant money as well as fundraising money to cover expenses for those that are calling. >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah, >> that was interest. >> Thank you very much. >> Thank you. >> All right. Thanks, Jenna. Good job. >> Okay, our number two over overnight out of state conference request link crew basic training and that is going to be Jacob Patrick. He's online. >> Hello everyone. Uh can you guys hear me? >> Yes. Um, so hello, my name is Jacob Petrich and I am here today to discuss um the out ofstate conference in Chicago, Illinois, the Link Crew basic training conference. And um if you're not very familiar with Link Crew, um it's a program at the high school that helps students transition from the eighth grade um into high school. I'm sure
015most of us know how intimidating that experience can be. Um, so the way the program works is where we take uh juniors and seniors uh that are already at the high school and they're the ones that kind of become the mentors uh to these eighth graders coming in uh as freshmen and they're there um at high school orientation uh showing them around the building, showing them to their classes um just to be there as a familiar face at the high school uh to help them out. Um they also follow follow up throughout the year uh with academic follow-ups, social follow-ups, so at dances, clubs. Um typically you'll always find someone that's a part of the link crew there to be that familiar face um be a leader and help out. Um so I was invited
016to be a part of the program this year um with Shelby Dempler who would also be attending the conference. Um, so I was invited to attend the training and I was hoping to get it approved. Are there any questions? >> So you'll be joining the other two that we approved last week, correct? >> Um, so it was to my understanding that I was supposed to be one of those two. Um, yeah, that's what I thought and I was just told to be here today. Okay. >> I'm sorry. >> Okay. >> So, there's three of you going now. >> Um, no. I believe there's only supposed to be the two. Um, so there's Shelby Spencer or Shelby Demblier and then I believe uh our counselor uh Miss Carr, she was supposed to go but wasn't able
017to. Um and then they asked if I wanted to go to be a part of the a part um to help since I am a freshman teacher and uh so they asked me to go in her place but I thought that might have been discussed already. >> Okay. >> Can I is there open comment? >> Yeah. >> I just want to say thank you. I know you just said that you're a freshman teacher. Um it's awesome that you're taking the initiative to kind of go and be a part of that. I think our students will appreciate it and thank you for jumping in as one person wasn't able to go and kind of stepping up to do that role. We appreciate it for our students. >> Oh, no problem. It's my pleasure truly. Um it's
018an honor to get to teach the freshman. Uh they're a tough bunch, but it's definitely worth it. And uh No, thank you. Okay. Any other questions, comments? All right. Thank you. Number three, overnight conference requests for the MAC UL conference. Uh, Mr. Gribble, >> correct? >> I always have to. So yes, the this is the McCall conference. This is M Michigan Association of Computer Users and Learning Conference. It's the state educational technology conference. I have been on the board since 2016. Uh currently working I am currently is a learning area delegate but running in running for the board again. So this is a conference that I've been going to since 2016. I've been very involved with this conference, but as a learning delegate, learning area delegate, and as a potential board member, this is a
019conference that I go to every year. Every other year, it's either in Grand Rapids, next year it'll be in Detroit, so it flips back and forth every year, but this is a state educational technology conference. >> Okay. Are there any questions? >> Can you just like what do you guys talk about in the conference? >> It all depends on the hot topics. Obviously this this year the hot topics is AI. >> Okay. >> Um I'm also presenting with Heather Roderman from Wayne Visa. We are actually doing a presentation there in regards to doing RTI and MTSS and using educational tools in the classroom as a partnership agreement with one of the presentations that we're doing while we're there. But every year it's different. Like a couple years ago is all the robotics and all those
020different things. But it's all put on by state educators. We do bring in a lot of keynote speakers to do presentations regards how educational technology has an impact on the classrooms and making moving forward to that 21st century educational process. It's not all just books, papers, and pencils. But obviously the big topics this year is how AI can be incorporated into the classrooms. >> That's awesome. >> I'm excited. >> Oh, I'm >> So you'll be running for the executive board there? >> Yes. >> Okay. You're currently on the executive board, right? >> I'm I'm a learning area de delegate right now because you you can only serve for two years. So, I've been on the board off >> off the board as as a learning area delegate and then back on the board because you
021can only do it for two years. >> Awesome. >> Okay. >> That was requested to run again. So, >> Gotcha. >> All right. Are there any other questions? Okay. Moving forward to number four, overnight conference request, the Michigan Science Teachers Association. And please bear in mind I said I'm not good at name. Aaron B. >> Is it Birman? >> Oh, she's online. >> Yeah. Hi. >> Go ahead. >> Okay. Um, my name is Aaron Bergamman. I'm a science teacher at Taylor High School. I teach biology as well as AP environmental science. Um, my department head reached out to me asking if I'd like to attend the MSTA conference with a co-orker of mine. She teaches chemistry. Gabby does. She wasn't able to be here tonight. Um, but we are hoping to go to the conference.
022We're both fairly new teachers and haven't been able to go to a conference before. Um we also both of us did a lot of our teacher prep coming up through COVID. So we didn't have a lot of collaboration time at that time either with other peer educators. So um the conference is all science teachers throughout Michigan. They have a really packed agenda with things like data literacy and um some like specific to Michigan topics like Great Lakes science things that are tangible to our students because it's happening in the world around them. Um, and with the two of us going, so I teach biology, chemistry is Gabby, we are going to bring home some of the knowledge to each of our departments. So I have three other biology teachers I work with. And then Gabby
023has two other chemistry teachers. So we want to share with them what we go and find out. >> Okay. And you're Cynthia Andrews. >> I'm Cynthia Andrews. I'm from Hoover Middle School. and Kathy Miller, who is um our lead teacher over at the middle school, >> reached out to me and said, "Are you interested?" And I have been an educator for over 20 years. I have attended other science conferences. I have not been to MSTA, although I've been a member of MSTA for a while. Uh so this is a conference that I'm very interested in. There's a lot of placebased education topics and outdoor environmental education. Our sixth grade program currently has a lot of environmental ecology. So, I'd like to see what we could do to get kids more interested in getting outdoors and
024caring for our environment. As my colleague just said in the high school talking about Michigan water systems, that's near and dear to my heart. My son uh is a geologist and has a degree in um water hydrarology. And I have another son in GIS down in New Mexico uh who works for New Mexico University and does uh mapping of water systems and how they can reach food desert areas with fresh water and fresh food. So um a lot of that comes back to here we are in Taylor. One of the topics that I was interested in because at our school we see deer and turkeys in the backyard on a regular basis. There's actually uh one of the sessions is on urban deer populations and with the building going up around our school, what is
025going to happen to these deer and how can we go out there and help environmentally? So things I'm interested in. >> No, it sounds very interesting. Are there any questions for these two ladies of science? >> Okay, thank you very much. Thank you. >> Number five rates and that is uh our technology director John Ross. Good afternoon. So you all have your paperwork on the uh documentary. So getting rid of uh getting right into it. What is -ate? Just a quick reminder that -ate is something that's available for schools and libraries to be able to take advantage of up to 90% in discounts for telecommunications. Uh we have four today. Uh one is network equipment. We got fiber cabling that we need to do. Uh we have some structured cabling which is just your data
026normal data runs that you would do and that's in anticipation of utilizing Holland and Johnson more than we are uh in the next coming years and preparing them for the consolidation. And then we have a bonus today which is the school bus Wi-Fi. Uh and then the next slide is just the deciding factors. This is simply just how we made our our choice. Final results here uh which you can see on your papers. Uh for the for the network equipment, we're good on equipment. Uh specifically with the consolidation, we're going to have a lot of extra equipment. So we're not doing any upgrades this year on that front. Uh so the only thing that we need to do there is just keep our hardware licenses up to date. Uh so that's where you see the
027$13,859.32, but of course we get 85% discount on that one. So it comes down to uh just below $2,100. Uh now the fiber cabling uh is just one in the whole district that needs to be done. It's over at Moody. Uh it's just an upgrade that was overlooked in prior years. So we're finishing that one and that should do us pretty good in the coming years. Uh the pricing there is uh just south $3,300 and uh comes out to about 500 bucks for us. The structured cabling, that's just the cable drops that go in classrooms, uh gymnasiums, and all over the place to provide data to teachers and students. Um again, what we're doing here is we're going to go into Johnson and we're going to go into Holland and we're going to reable those
028buildings. uh some of those built some of those rooms don't have ample cabling and a lot of it's just extremely old. So, we're going to strip the old and bring in the new cabling and prepare it for those locations where we're going to uh need that. So, what we did there was uh we had a whole lot of vendors come out which was excellent because a lot of districts have been complaining about not getting a lot of vendors to come out and give you a lot of choices. I think we had five or six that actually came out which is great. So with that being said, uh we have a lot of history or at least some history with most of these companies and so we were able to make a really good choice and
029fortunately the best choice ended up being the best price. Uh so both buildings came in at $91,848. Um and then the - cost to us that's a 85% discount that's 13,777. So you can see how that works in our favor. The bonus this year is the bus Wi-Fi that we have on all of our buses. Uh this was uh prior years this was completely on us to do the whole payment. Uh this year it's now category one which means that's a 90% discount for us. So in prior years we were playing around 30 $31,000 a year and now it's $3,028. So that's just a little bonus on at the end of this. Uh now the total cost of everything you can see there uh the cost of the district would be just short of 20
030grand. Um and of course it'd be about 140 if we didn't have rate to take advantage of and to be earnest about things. There's some districts that don't take advantage of which I'm surprised but um it's it's something that we have uh and then this caps us out. So next year we have just enough to pay for our hardware licenses and then it begins all again the following year in anticipation for the new high school. So that's another big deal that's going to happen is we can use a lot of those funds for that. Any questions about that? >> Does the 19,000 does that come out of general fund or is it grant funded or >> That's general fund. >> We already have Wi-Fi on the buses. is upgrading or are we adding? >> Neither.
031We're just continuing service. So, right now, uh we we've had it for at least a year and a half that I've been here. Uh but some of the equipment is a little bit older, so I imagine that's been here for a while. We pay 30 $31,000 a year to maintain that. That's just to keep the service. So, if you can imagine, every bus has its own cell service. Yeah. And a part of that cell service is giving Wi-Fi to every kid on that bus. Some of those bus rides can be a little bit longer and while they're on the bus, they can do homework or other things. But, uh, the nice thing about the Wi-Fi, too, is that it's super compliant and it meets those standards so that kids can't just browse to whatever they
032want to. they're still trapped in in our security domain. >> It probably does. Does it also help with like the security cameras on the buses or No, >> not right now. Uh something that we're looking into is the ability to use that Wi-Fi connection on the bus >> to transmit that to the cloud. >> Okay. >> I know it's a really fun topic all this, right? >> So, the Wi-Fi is currently there. We're just maintaining it. Is that where >> correct? Yep. It's just like an annual cell phone rate for each bus. And that's all >> 48 buses. >> And then for the cabling fixes, is that just going to happen over summer or spring break or >> Yes. Uh that's a requirement is that we're all ready for school to begin. >> Okay. >>
033Are there any other questions? >> Okay. Thank you, John. >> Okay. Number six, our assistant superintendent, Jason Gribble, is going to speak to this. This is a change, but answering questions will be Miss Carolyn Taylor. She's online, I believe. >> So, yes, uh number action number six and number seven are actually combined. Theou is in connection to the graduation alliance. So, graduation alliance, we would be one of multiple districts in the down river area that use this service. And what the service does provide is it able to reach out to students that may have dropped out of school for the last three years. Reaches out to them and gives them an opportunity to earn a diploma. Their company reaches out to them. They set up a schedule. They give them an opportunity. They have their
034own teachers. They have their own devices. But the nice thing about this is once they get enrolled in that program, we get the FTE. So right now they're just floating out there and they're out there. But now when they're in the program, we still count them and so can count them like we do. All of our students are here, but they can go through the program and when they're all said and done, they graduate through this program, they still get a Taylor High School diploma. They're not getting a GED. So this is a our way of reaching out to those students that for whatever reason dropped out, not knowing those reasons. It still gives us an opportunity to reach out to those students and get them an opportunity to get that diploma even though obviously
035we can't do fifth year, sixth year, sevenyear seniors, but this program allows us to do that, but then still get them that high school diploma. What this also does for us is for our students that are fifth or sixth year seniors, we especially our fifth year seniors in the high school of listen your agent out. We don't want 19 20 year olds walking through the high schools. We really don't we don't want them if they haven't gone the TVLA route we can then direct them here they can work on do their own path they can work they can get a job work all day and this is their online night school and we still get to claim that FTE and how this works is after the students go through the program and after they complete
036a course graduation alliance charges us a certain amount to cover the cost of what they do on their end but in the end we're still gathering ing some revenues by having that program be a part of this. So, it gives us an opportunity to reach out to the students that have dropped out, getting them away from the idea of getting a GED and still getting that high school diploma, which obviously when they're looking for employment and given opportunities, employers are looking for that diploma, not just a GED. and also trying to help those students that are fifth year seniors. And as we're going through some of our discipline hearings and stuff like that, we're looking for alternative places for our students to continue their education. This is another path that we could send some of
037our students that are again fifth year senior that only has four and a half credits, has that 0.9 GPA. It's another path and an opportunity to get them involved. >> Do you only pay if you have students do it? >> Yes. So there's no upfront fee. >> There's no And then if nobody does it, we're free and clear. We can >> We're free and clear. Am I right, Carol? Carol Carolyn, the representative from that's been working with us is here. So she can help answer some of the questions we may have as well. But yeah, we don't use it. We don't get charged. They do all the ground work reaching out to the students. Obviously working with Mr. Stone through pupil accounting, work with her high school counselors. These are the students that have been
038on the radar that have dropped out for the couple years. They do the groundwork reaching out to the kids saying, "Hey, we're through here. We're working with Taylor schools. We're here to provide you an opportunity if you're still interested if you want to get your high school diploma and do this. And the nice thing about this, it doesn't take away from the students that are already in the building. It doesn't take away from our students that are already in TVLA. It's just another opportunity for us to, and again, as you've heard me say before, I want to give our kids hope. This gives our kids in our community that that for whatever reason aren't on a path to be able to graduate on time or for whatever circumstance they had to drop out of school.
039Gives them that opportunity to have hope, get that diploma and and and be successful in life. >> Is there an age limit on this, Caroline? >> General education students up until the age of 22 and special ed students up until the age of 26. >> Okay. And this is through we're doing this through reset. Correct. That is correct. Okay. >> Yeah. We get the consortium pricing through we resets. >> Correct. >> And how much do we have to pay if we have students that go there? >> It depends on the number of students in the program. We only bill you if you're able to claim funding too. So it's a pay for performance model. We only invoice you if you're able to claim funding. So if you have 1 to 14 students in the program
040and it's monthtomonth as well. So there's no upfront costs. There's no minimums. You only pay if students are enrolled and if they're able to be claimed. So if you had 1 to 14 students in the program, you're going to pay Graduation Alliance uh 73.6% of the FTE and it's a monthly claim. So it's roughly around um $800 per student per month. The math is not exact there. Um so you'll claim 800 roughly. You'll pay us roughly $700. And so 26.4% 4% would be retained by the district. And there's volume price discounts as well depending on the number of students that are in each month. So if you had 15 to 39 um you pay graduation alliance 69% you retain 31%. So it's a costneutral program. So you're always going to keep more than you're going
041to pay us. >> And this is based on the state's FTE per child, right? >> Yes, >> that's correct. Which is uh 968. Yes. their effect. >> Good question. I've got um some data here. I can give you the data for Wayne County and I also have the data nationally. So, we measure success in a couple of different ways. Uh number one, can we get these kiddos back in the classroom? So, if they're younger, can we get them back in the classroom with you? If not, can we get them a high school diploma uh from the school district? So, last calendar year in Wayne County, we enrolled 1300 students. Our average monthly credit earned rate is about 0.52. So we schedule two courses for a student at a time. At a minimum they have to
042complete one of those uh courses. So it' be a half credit. Um of that 1300 students roughly we returned 762 back to the building. So 72% of students in Wayne County actually went back into the classroom. And then we had a graduation rate of 54%. That may seem low but we're starting from zero. So going from 0 to 54 we're quite proud of. And then last mileer students that have between zero to five credits left to get their high school diploma. Our graduation rate was 86%. >> What other districts in the immediate area are participating? >> So Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecourse, Leavonia, Northville, um Old Redford Academy, Plymouth Canton, Riverview, South Redford, uh Van Beern, Wayne Westland, and Wand Dots, our newest partner. So Mr. Wagner and I were talking about this knowing that we
043both came from previous districts before we came here. We were shocked that we weren't a partner with them. So that's what initiated this conversation >> and that cost. I know one of the questions was the cost that goes to them and we were just saying the district gets a portion of that cost and then graduate alliance gets a portion of that cost of the FTE. That's correct. When the state gives us that money for that student enrolling back in part of that money, a little portion comes to the district, but then a larger portion pays for the graduate alliance enrollment. >> That's correct. But you're not currently claiming these students today. So this would be a monthly claim as opposed to the two count periods. You're going to be submitting monthly claims each month. >>
044Yes. Okay. >> So if the students return to the classroom, >> they would be doing regular work, but they wouldn't be going through you. So then for those students, we wouldn't pay for them. >> No, they're they're ours again. >> We only get charged when they're with us. >> You only get charged if they don't come back to the classroom or you're doing it like the older students that can't return to the classroom, right? >> You only get charged if they're in our program and you're able to claim them. >> Yeah. >> For the work that they're doing in our program >> and that's that satisfactory >> academic progress. Yes. >> Okay. They have to meet that at the state level to be considered. >> Yes. They have to be pacing as if they were
045in the classroom. Yes. >> Different but different than TVLA which is normally different clock hours. These students could work all day and then go home and jump online and do like night school but it's an online night school. >> So if you're saying back in the classroom then what classrooms are they going to be in? These are for students like if they were a sophomore or a junior that are for whatever reason may have to step away from school, >> right? >> And then they go through this is kind of like keeping them up on their credits. They're like, "All right, I'm no longer financially hardship or with the issue they have me keep out of school." They're keeping up with those credits. Like, all right, they're keeping up. I'm ready to come back to
046school. They come back to school. They're normally as long as they're within that our age range of not being that sixth or seventh year senior. Obviously, now we're not going to have them come back, >> right? >> But if it is a sophomore or a junior that has to take a step away for a semester, they could still stay on track by doing this. >> And I'm going to use the example one of our students who's pregnant, has to step away for a year, do that type of thing, get their life back together. Now I'm ready to come back through. But while they're dealing with that situation at home, they can be enrolled graduation alliance, still keep their credits up, and then by the time it's their senior year, they're like, "All right, I've got
047caught up on my credits. Now I can come back to school. I'm gonna finish my senior year out. I'm gonna graduate with my friends. They can still do that, but now they're still ours. We get the full FTE because they're no longer enrolled with that program. >> The district calls the shots of when students come into the program and if they go back into the classroom. So the district is making all these decisions. >> And from my understanding, this is focusing on kids that are already out of school right now, right? Is that where our district is focusing or are we focusing on all of the kids? So we're first obviously we're looking at for the students that have dropped out. >> Okay. >> Which we've done our data and I think we identified 13
048students so far that fit within that fit within those parameters. >> 513 >> 13. >> Oh >> no. They said 500 >> no over the over the last three years we've identified 13 students that we're going to reach they're going to have reach out to them and try to bring them back at least get them in the program. >> Yeah. >> And then then looking at our current seniors that are not on path that only have five credits. they don't even close to the 22 and a half that they need. They didn't do TVLA. >> This is an opportunity for them to at least continue on and then not and not stay in. And then look at also students based on the student hearings that we've had involved of having that as another opportunity for
049those students to still continue to get their education. We're still providing their their education. It's just they're doing it for for graduation alliance, not tova because some of those students aren't fit to be in TVLA. This gives them another alternative. In essence, it's an online alternative school for what we're trying to do. >> Okay. Are there any other questions? Thank you, Carolyn. >> Thank you. >> Which leads into >> number seven, >> which is theou with TFT. uh working with TFT, they're asking knowing going through this for a year, cap it at 50 students, knowing that okay, we have the 13 are outside. It really doesn't affect us, but now we're looking at the the 37 students that possibly could be current students now to be enrolled into this program. They just didn't want us
050to start pulling kids out of the classrooms and and emptying our buildings to move them there. And then conversations we've had with TFT is at the end of this year we'll re-evaluate it. If we're getting some good gains, we're getting students that are getting their diplomas, they're being successful, we'll continue theou going into next year, continue our contract with with graduation alliance and then if nobody signs up, it doesn't work out for us. And the nice thing is it doesn't cost anything now. >> So if it doesn't work, we're good to go. But again, giving our students opportunities, giving our kids hope to get that piece of paper and get that diploma, I think is is something worth looking at. So, we're looking at possibly capping it at 50. We're doing the data. I sat
051in my office yesterday. I talked to Jen Lowers yesterday, the senior, the senior counselor, looking at our students that are definitely the high-risisk students that are either their fourth year, definitely their fifth year. They'd only have five or six current credits. They're not going to be able to walk across the stage right now. We're at least around 20. That gives them another opportunity to >> Would you look at the junior students, too? >> We haven't looked at them yet because I don't want to look at the juniors because I don't want to get us over the 50. So, we're going to find out how it impacts our current seniors and then start looking into our junior years. >> So, we're looking at 33 right off the bat with the 13 that we identified could come
052back to the district. And then the you said 30 seniors or no 20 seniors. >> 20 current seniors. >> Yeah. >> But th they wouldn't be coming back anyway because they're going to be of age >> and and beyond. But to ask to answer your questions, the junior class is the ones that we would look at as well. That's going to be our next step of working with the counselors to say, "All right, who are these students that are on the radar that this might be beneficial to that want don't want to do TVLA?" Because obviously we want to try to keep the students in. if they can do TVLA, get them on that path. But if there's any extend circumstances that don't fit into to that mold, we have this as a backup as
053well. >> We have another backup, isn't it? Um, what is it? Michigan >> Michigan Merit. >> Is it like that program? But we have the edmentum that we currently have in place for our students that need to be homebound or that type of situation, but they still are on our they're on our case load and stuff like that. This is all done through graduation alone. They have their teachers, their technology, they do all the setup >> whereas like the other ones we have is our teachers like they have to find the time or is it outside sources too >> with Edenum? >> Yeah, >> it's our it's I believe it's our teachers that helps. Yeah, the students expelled different. >> And what about the Michigan Merit? >> We don't have that. >> This the first
054I've heard of the Michigan Merit. I know we have Michigan Merit curriculum, but I don't know if we have another alternative credit replacement or credit recovery program for those students. >> I don't remember how it works. I'm not sure how many people how many students have been through that >> maybe one or two. >> Yeah, I think it's 18 credits. >> 18 credits and they can graduate still. >> Are you talking about the personalized curriculum? >> Michigan merit would be a personalized curriculum, >> right? Okay. So we have the counselors that are working with various students to map out what those there was a presentation a couple of board meetings ago about how we can go through many different avenues to say get our algebra credit and things like that through mapping things for through
055the career center and things like that. So I think the counselors are really working overtime. Um, one of the things that I I really like about this is that it returns TVLA to its intended uh purpose, which is it's a true online program. It's not meant to be a credit recovery program. There's an application process. U Marlene Scott best describes it as um it is school of choice within the district. It is for students who want to be there, who are or not. It's Um we are um offering to partner with VDK for communication for a three-month finite amount of you'll see that what they're offering is a power um some addition to our website, some printed material, social media posts that have anything to this is a for a finite amount of time uh
056time period of approximately three months for $30,000. That's really it because we know who that piece of communication out to the public.
