[music] >> Work-based learning internship is for juniors and seniors in high school who are CTE completers, which means they have two back-to-back courses in a CTE field. Um they also need to have two class blocks available. The internship is approximately 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours Monday through Friday. Our internship is simply the best flower shop. While I'm here, I'll price the flowers and stick them out um in the front area. Um I do a lot of peace lilies. Russell, Natalie, uh Sharon, and Pat, they help me a lot. They tell me what to do, how to do it. Um they've helped me make arrangements. They've helped me um exceed my skills. Well, it does give kids an opportunity to go and and be with other businesses and learn how to do trades they might

not be interested in otherwise, but I think Kelly has learned a lot since she's been here in a short time. I have thought about my future here. I'm hoping they offer me a job. But um if they do, I will say yes cuz I love it here. I I love the energy. I love the people. Um I love the people who come in here. Um I just love it. It's honestly I'm not even going to lie. The work-based learning internships are a vast amount of career fields. We have everything [music] from New College Institute, industrial maintenance, marketing, finance, um IT. We have Wallace Welding has welding students. We have some in bakeries. We have some in retail. [music] We have some in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy. We also several at Sovah Hospital and

other doctor's offices around Martinsville and Henry [music] County. So, the job offering is endless and if there are options that we don't have yet, we're always willing to go out and find new employers. Hi, I'm Casey Boyd. I intern at the New College Institute. I assist with the financial and HR position here with Diana Pace. I learn a lot every day, mostly about Excel and the different like apps and stuff that they use and [music] their financial part of here. The first semester, I helped a lot with the financial stuff. This semester, I helped Diana like mostly with like her paperwork, helped making sure she has what she needs. I love it here. I think this program is awesome. Yeah. Um, I think it's great for kids to get experience in in the work force.

Um, maybe they decide that they love the job and want to continue forward. Maybe they decide they hate it and don't want to continue forward. Um, but just building those relationships, giving them that experience, uh, and letting them experience what real life is, um, I think is great. I now want to do sonography. But, if sonography doesn't work out, I would definitely do finance or HR here. The program benefits the students because they get to get in this field and they're in their junior to senior year, so they're already trying to decide where they want to go to college and what career [music] they want to go into. And this definitely helps them get into a career and decide, do I want to do [music] this? Do I not want to do this? Is it

something I want to pursue? And for the community, it's a great opportunity to get help in their business. Um, most interns are unpaid, so that's always a plus for our employer. [music] Um, and it also just helps them free up their employees to do other things. >> I'm an intern at Acme Therapies and >> [music] >> day-to-day I usually like help around the office or if >> [music] >> uh one of the therapists need help with the kid or like anything. Like I'll do the dishes sometimes, sweep, clean. I'd say that all kids are different, especially like here cuz one kid will come in and will be like [music] calm and then they'll get wild real quick. But um, I think you have a lot of you have to have a lot of patience to

finish your job through the store. They help out with the kids and especially when we have therapists who are working with one [music] kid and we have a tech and working with another kid and with the intern coming in and teaches them [music] how to what you would need to do to be a therapist. It helps be actual therapists and it also helps the tech by them being all in one group. I think this helped me choose my major in sports medicine. Most of our interns are unpaid. However, we are partnering some with [music] Leeway Youth and CareerWorks to find some paid internships [music] and we also have several employees who are willing to pay.
