girl. >> I was just wondering that >> your choice when you go there. >> Oh, you are a beast. here. You used to have really good classes. >> Oh, really? I don't know if they anymore, but anytime here >> it was it definitely is like I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> The district mission state in partnership with the communities. The mission of the Delton School District is to educate individuals in an environment of trust and respect so they become self-corrected responsible lifelong learners call me Shannon here as well as Very good. We don't have any visitors. No one speaking. Do I have a motion to adopt the agenda? Motion second.

Any questions or discussion? All those in favor say >> I on number five public comb the theater group. the one I play subsection really difficult to get past all and so congratulations Mr. Alvin and that entire team. It's really exciting to do that. >> It's the first time in a long time that they came out of subsection. >> The last time they went subsection, I was their coach. >> Yeah. I didn't have anything to do with it, but I wasn't one day >> this week. I think we have it actually but uh Britney was just saying we also want to celebrate our professionals this week and I know that they are recognizing during the board meeting too but the shout out to them for all they do >> and I know there's one here tonight

and there's also quite a few staff members that were commenting on that as well today saying thank you to them today was potato bar I think for them kind of each day this week there's something to celebrate them thank them for >> I also want to just say thanks to our grounds crew. Every time I'm on campus, the everything is cleared. There's no ice on the sidewalk. It's really nice to know that everybody's coming in safe and everything's taken care of early in the morning. So, a special thanks to them coming in. >> Yeah, lately. Yeah. >> Any other rebel commission? >> All right, we won this number six reports. Uh 6.1 elementary. >> All right. Hi everyone. >> All right. I'm going to start with the staples packet. >> Okay. Um first academics. Um

so starting with tier one instruction, we are continuing with our CT read curriculum and our math expression math curriculum. Um, and then if you look on that other handout with all the great boxes, you can see all of our passwords results. So, our benchmark window was the first two weeks when we came back from school. So, I won't go through every single one, but we are seeing lots of growth um across the board, first grade through kindergarten is not here. They don't do class bridge, but first grade through 11th grade. Um, so you can see the results there. um our tier 2 and tier three intervention times. Those are our smaller group supports. So we have 107 students currently receiving tier 2 reading support, 91 receiving tier math support. So those groups are about four

students and then 22 students are receiving tier three reading and math support. So that's one-on-one instruction. um special ed staff. So they are using the spider reading curriculum collaborating with classroom teachers to provide those targeted instruction accommodations and modifications. And then our social workers, they will continue to um go in classroom visits twice per month. And then our classroom teachers are using the be good people curriculum. Um and then our guests in the classroom. So that other handout that I have, that is the guest that we've had in our classroom this year so far. So, we've had quite a few. Um, moving on to our goals this year. So, just to recap what our three goals are, we had a family goal, a student goal, and a staff goal. So, our first one was creating

more opportunities for families to be involved. So, every grade level in has invited in or will invite in parents to do some sort of activity. Um, we are hosting family night this Thursday. So, Winter Wonderland. Shout out to our PBS team who has um planned that. Our next goal is focusing more on behavior interventions. So we provided trauma training to our staff on Monday. So we had a guest speaker come in. Her name is Heather Simmonic from provided some trauma training to the staff. Um and then the last goal is our staff goal. So just having more consistency with our initiatives, not adding more and more stuff to our plates, but just continuing with doing the good things that we're doing, getting really good at them. Um, moving on to committee updates. So we have

quite a few committees here at the elementary. So leadership committee, we meet once per month. We will start planning scheduled for next year already. PBIS rebel await committee, like I said, we have our family night on Thursday. And then those are below. Those are some quarterly celebrations that we have done. So quarter one, we did a fall festival. Fall festival. A lot of parent volunteers came in. So that was great to see. Bounce houses were last week. So thank you to the PTA for funding that. Quarter three, a magician is coming in and quarter four we will do our talent show. ELA committee. So we're working on finding the gaps in our curriculum. We're going to be doing some more vertical alignment work this summer. Attendance committee. Uh we meet every Monday to go through

our attendance. So Val the SRO, she comes in. Um Jamie, here our social workers. Um Kayla, our nurse, and what is it Mary? >> Thank you. >> Um so just working with those families to try to help their students get to school. So this those bulleted points down below are what we shared at the last staff meeting. So this is our protocol. So 3 days unverified family gets a letter 7day we refer them to the county attorney mediation program which is camp and then if they do not attend camp then we file a CPS report will be filed um and then we just work with the county to um provide more resources for them and then at 10 days whether it's excused or unexcused we send them a letter um for tardies we can't really

take action on tardies But we are seeing more and more lately. So we've just been trying as many interventions as we can do to get their child to school, which their outline there, giving the parent an alarm clock, texting the parent, calling the parent, creating morning schedule for the student, offering gas cards, high school shop class, helping with car trouble. So just a lot of different things to try to get their child to school on time. Um upcoming fundraisers and grants. So coming up, we have the gifts from the heart fundraiser. So we did this for the first time last year where the staff gets to host an activity. So last year for example I did assistant principal for the day. So when students came in they were the assistant principal for the day. Um

students get to purchase tickets. So it is 50 cents per ticket and then they get to drop it in the bucket that they want to do. We also know that some students aren't able to afford these tickets. So all teachers get their own tickets to give out for positive behavior. that are working hard just for a chance for all all students to get a ticket. Last year we raised around $2,500. So these funds will go towards IATA equipment this year. March we're doing our book fair. April the PTA will be doing the Robo Raffle Extravaganza and then book fair and all those fundraisers have been approved. Um fun run fundraiser. So this was back in October. This was definitely a highlight of our year. Kids had a blast. We didn't really know what to expect

going into it, but it was a really fun day. Uh, let's see. So, we've raised around $3,500. $1,500 of it will be going towards an opera visit in April. And then $2,500 went towards an Earnest visit, which we just hosted him in January, who we found out was our ELLL teachers dad. So, that was kind of a cool connection we had there. And then $30,000 will be put towards more playground equipment for the green space. So, Dakota Playground, I think that's the company. They're coming out next week to take a peek. Um, $500 playground grant. We got that earlier this year for more equipment. And then just today, I got the check in the mail from the FM area foundation. We are going to install blue stop signs on 4th Avenue just for more safety.

And then lastly, we have some lots of student teachers in our building. So we have four teachers hosting student teachers that will be full-time teaching. Um we have three kindergarten teachers who will be hosting practicum students this semester. So I think about 30 hours of observations they have to do. And then this will be our second year of hosting high school students for their intro to student teaching course. So today Michael high school counselor came with five students and we met their uh cooperating teacher tour the building talked about expectations. really going to treat it like it's a hollow course. So that is elementary. Any questions? >> What are the letters can be sent home? Um, it just basically said says the state statute of attendance in Minnesota and it's important to get your child's

school and failure to comply we will >> in really Troy what it ends up being um it's I guess if you will it's a it's a check mark that the county needs us to do. So it's a process. So when these families >> lengthy process, >> what's that? >> A very lengthy process. >> Very lengthy process, but at least it's kind of checking the boxes if you will. And so then when the county gives it, well, have you done this? Yep, you have. Have you done this? Oh, okay. >> But it is kind of those hoops. >> Yeah, we have many boxes we have to check before we do a referral. So that's a fast bridge that >> the percentage B on the right of the gray box. What does that number mean? >> So

that is Yeah, it looks kind of confusing on there, but that is the WA. So that's the pass it or low risk. Those are those two numbers combined. >> Okay. And it seems like more success at the younger grades than the upper grades. Is that fair or is that >> Yeah, you can see the percentages in the younger grades get a little higher. Um I would say once they get a little older they're depending >> because the uppers are actually coming up the numbers. >> Yep. >> Yeah. We actually um for 9th through 11th grade, we haven't gotten great data because we've done testing like in their language arts class all day where kids are coming and going. So this time around we did the first hour of school from 8 to 9, everyone is

testing and it went very well. So I think we're going to continue that moving forward just because we can capture everyone at that time. >> Just a better I think that process. Yep. Yep. When I look at the numbers, I might be looking at it wrong, but I when I look at fall to winter, the percent drops in a lot of the >> in the middle school. Yes. In the elementary, I would say it goes up in almost everyone, doesn't it? >> Math goes down. >> Well, third math goes down. >> The resting Is it basically the same guessing the same information or is it like >> the benchmarks get a little higher as they go through the year? >> It's a little more difficult than winter. So it's sort of when we say low

risk, it's just sort of based on where they should be. >> Yep. >> Exactly. >> At what point do they get help? Is it not until they're high risk or is it when there's some risk? Well, it depends because like for our intervention kids, um let's say second grade for example, they have 120 students where a lot of them need some sort of intervention, but we only have so many spots. So, we start at the bottom and we start we go up. Whereas first grade, we have 85 students and only 11 kids are needing intervention. So, it just kind of depends on the grade and the need. We always there's definitely a a big gap in some grades. Second grade sounds like that's one of them. >> Yeah, >> that's hard. >> Yeah. And we

I mean in the past we've done like the 30 30th percentile and below, but we now we're starting at the bottom, we're going up to the size. >> So then when when do we start looking at those kiddos that are low but not low enough to really get that assistance? Um because when I'm looking at these scores, I mean 49% for seventh grade math, I mean that's a pretty low number um for kiddos who are meeting, but if they have a large percentage in their class, um we've got those kids who are obviously going to meet that requirement for special ed needs or whatever. And then we've got a few that are going to get that intervention support, but then there's going to be that huge gap, you know, and then there that's that's a

concern for me. It has been for a long time about how we're going to support those kids to be able to get them to where they need to be to find success in the middle school and high school when it's largely self paced, selfdirected learning. Um that that um Angel's concern is big for me. >> Yeah. Yeah. So, like in elementary we have the what I need time like that 25 intervention block for reading and math which everyone's getting what they need tailored to what they need. Um and I know Alison Stewart in the middle school she's working with Brook Hunstead to create she created a seventh grade and eighth grade student success class. They're pulling fifth grade has an intervention time. Sixth grade has an intervention time. So they're building. So we're getting there.

Um I just heard today they're adding nth grade. So, but Alison also only has so much time and there's only one of her. So, >> we did add >> We're getting there. >> We did add the interventions. The middle school. The problem was So, good news, bad news, we had a seventh and eighth grade do it. So, you know, we had two interventions, some we have three, but now we have four classes. So, it's it's still >> that one of the concerns that people have come with. And I'll be honest, one of my kiddos falls in this gap as well and we've had to seek outside um support and we've had occupational therapy and have um many structures outside of the school day. Um but we have the capacity and ability to do that. And

I'm worried that um kids who maybe have this gap and parents are either not recognizing it or the school's not able to address it. You know, those are kids that are going to fall into that um challenging time and these numbers are supporting that. We have a fair amount of kids in that we have a teacher assistance team, our CAT team is what we call it in every school. So that is our MTSS coordinator himself. um specialized teacher carries on that team. Um Carrie, Mary, who else? School psych. And we go there, we review the data, we problem solve academics, behaviors, so the gap doesn't keep growing. We we problem solve before they get there. >> I think this, you know, this is our first year with NTSS, too. And I think the one thing

we want to do is make sure we added we added more to the elementary. uh we are also doing it on purpose which again I hope can catch up and we can eliminate some of this middle school issue. Then we have to decide, okay, as Allison's working with the middle school and we added seventh and eighth grade, okay, do we need to add another interventionist when we wrote the grant? You know, you're kind of shooting blind a little bit trying to make sure, okay, we have to increase it. We have to do things better. Um, I would say we're still short there in the middle school. Um, but it's nice to see what we're doing here. I want the other thing is when you invest into it, uh, you go, okay, what's our return? Right?

And so I really like how you guys are meeting. I like what Allison has shared even at the DP how she's I guess for a lack of a better way to say we're finally doing it intentionally >> and we're recognizing everybody. Uh that's why it's win time. We have to get how does that fit in the middle school? Fifth grade is easier obviously because it's more of an elementary setting. Um I it's still an ongoing discussion as to how do we best do that schedulewise I guess with six seven eight and I think that's one of the barriers I would say we're still up against. >> Yeah. From what I hear in the fifth grade the win time is a lot of times most of class stay in the classroom with the teacher. So it

simply becomes an extension of their teacher day. And so I think there definitely a lack of resources. understand we have a lot understand that but it's just >> would you agree with that if that that we and I don't know if you know so I apologize it's not your spot but Allison's not here either it would be nice to ask her that >> um we and that's probably true we have two interventionists um and then the classroom teachers and then >> well there's three over there so at that time >> oh yeah there are three I'm sorry there are three five classrooms >> yes they should be breaking up those five kids total. Yeah. >> They should be falling out. >> Correct. >> Yeah. Yeah. So the rest of the >> Yeah. There's still probably

>> you look at what we're looking at here for for numbers like there's certainly much higher percentage that need some sort of assistance that isn't getting it. >> That's still true. Yeah. >> Any other questions for >> hard questions? Good question. Thanks. >> Thank you so much. >> I know. >> All right. 6.2. got the most boring places. She said she had four pages. I said, "Oh my gosh, I got seven things listed." >> Well, one of the most important I just have places you have to do. That's my world. >> But anyway, um finder um was one in this year. We did our route performances. We rebuilt all our routes in the system. um made the changes that need to be made um when it came to the ML for Tennessee on course or

not if they're really good. The bus are fairly close. We've had a lot of changes. It has not. We haven't gained a lot of miles which is kind of good kind of stabilizing. So the router going well. I think uh 20 and myself looking a little bit more comfortable transl we've been very fortunate we have three full drivers fulltime drivers very reliable they always there two part time people are very very reliable also um right now our fleet is going really well recovery is running well. We do have a 2011 that we're going to be selling because it does not have construction any longer. Um, our next vehicle we're going to probably end up replacing will be our handicap van. Um, we have two of them. The one that we use all the time is

burning mouth. Um, but the one that is a backup, the DOT guy said you put your finger through the breast, it's done. I'm not going to touch it. I mean, it won't make it. So he he did pass the system but actually we do have an issue there. Um so that's one of the things need to be looking at. >> Can I ask a question? >> Yeah. >> So it's a rust issue on a not >> because it's rusted on the sides. It feels rusted underneath or is it not solid? >> So that's kind of how the same rust well and it does make sense. So that's pretty much what we said we need to do with that one is probably we'll probably pass it on to community so she can use it this summer

for summer. We'll pick her grandfather and just let it go. She'll be able to use it but not what we're using it for. Um we've had some fun together. >> That's what we were calling it. >> I'll try. Um, actually I think it's going fairly well considering the busing situation. Um, the last time we had a real test, we had one bus go down and it was kind of crazy because it was actually running to start the route and it started to burn out and too. So that bus went down. He was able to nurse it back, switch it out and so we had one bus that was pretty late, but it came there and it was it worked out well. Um, good thing about it is we did get to test out our system.

Pull up all the people that are riding bus one. So, we're able to pull up, send out a message. We actually got to see how well that works. Um, didn't seem to be any glitches. I didn't know screamed at me except one bus that went down didn't have the correct number because they flipped them around. She go, but I really need one. And I swirl. I think, oh my gosh, I need so much. Nice. Pretty good. >> I know. I said, you know what? But good news is the work. Bus is running and I mean that was the only one we had so far. Um our new transit van, love it. I think we need it. It's probably the best one we spent in this department. Um it works really well. It instead of going

two times the house, we only have to go once. We don't have to picking on each other. They're spread out. Um, it just works really, really well. >> What's the capacity of that one? >> Nine passenger. So, with the driver, but they have nine passenger. It works really well. We have one person get two here. So, we have like a walk. So, the kids are not touching each other, breathing on each other, anything that has children. We keep both. >> I only one child, but you know, I still it's okay. Would you see there's opportunities if we added enough? >> I do because here's the deal. We have done that. >> Yeah. >> The activity bus holds 14. Okay. We take the dancing. We got 17. Okay. So, that doesn't fit. But what we've been

doing is we've been taking the activity bus to transit and running together. If you have a great distance, you're sending somebody to a ninji, it is more costs efficient to send two people in the small vehicle than to hire a bus because once you get mileage, you're usually looking up four or $500 easily ahead. >> So that is what we've been doing with that. And middle school got eight, nine kids, okay, you got two going different directions. going to Franklin at four going to Jane Middle School and you can't with one vehicle and the eight bus for eight people nine people makes no sense at all. So what we've been doing is we've been taking the trans and in two different directions and then you're just paying a driver you're using vehicles. So yeah another

another activity bus would be helpful or another transit. >> I think either one you really can't go wrong with I mean the answer. Yes. >> It's just because you can have more in it, but they're both they both have been >> wonderful. They just don't fund your school for free, so you got to buy them, right? >> But yeah, weird. It's really weird. But the the activity bus paid for itself in two years. Fully paid two years, and now we're just that much money ahead. That's why we bought the second one here. Now, uh we went this route just because of our sped needs in that. And this one's worked out great as well, which just you can't get a 15, you can't get a 12 anymore for Minnesota school. So, it has to be

either 10 or then you have to go to this activity bus, which is which is enough drivers for that kind of situation. >> The nice thing is they don't have to have a CDL with the type three. >> So, any of the drivers in transportation can actually run. We have coaches that have been through type three that connect you. So yeah, we it's kind of the easy fix. It really is. >> Do they feel comfortable? Yeah, they feel comfortable right there time. >> That was the other reason that was the other reason why we did go with the band that's a 10 or you know because it feels like more like a van. It's not as wide. It's not as doesn't have duals. It just >> it just it's it's so less scary, >> but

it's still different. It's still longer. It's still big. It's >> It's been wonderful. It's just I wish we' have got it in September, but they were building it in September, so we didn't get >> Yeah. No, it's been a lifesaver. It's amazing how many times we can make that actually use it for a specialized vehicle, but we need it. What we do is we have one person that they normally don't kind of split them up and get them to the same locations and just make it all work. Sometimes it gets a little crazy and can't really remember how I made that work and needed to find any. >> The other thing I will say that I've heard from the drivers and I shared with me too, the nice thing about this new van is the

driver can basically walk around in it to make sure people are buckled in a suburban. It's like, okay, I'm crawling over. It's just crazy. And so that's the other thing they like. They can walk around. Yes, David's good. you know, because of the height. >> Like I think a lot of the newer ones, we got information that seat belts like are all positions positions. I guess I haven't really paid much attention to >> that seat belt, >> correct? >> Like a car. Yeah. Yeah, if there's weight in it, then it notifies you something. I just >> I know it lights up, but there's somebody on situation. >> I don't know. I just know that it's really a nice piece, the driver's like um something you never hear in turn the heat too hot. came back

and said, you know, those people are really hot because that's something you normally do. >> I think that's pretty normal. Um, we're going to be starting the driver evaluations and training course this weekend. It's nice and cold for sure, but that's the next thing coming up. And then we have some changes we have to do to be compliant. We beginning in January, drug testing is going to be the responsibility of each contractor. We're also going to be using this country for our third party administrator, but with all the clearing house, they're going to have to be responsible for their testing. We will still have the option of going in and checking for all those years to make sure that everything is where it needs to be. We'll still pull the MVRs to make sure that

we have license should be there. Um same with the maintenance file we don't over the old file anything that incidents that happen with conf. It's just basically basic things that you need. That's >> Yeah, we um Eileen and I, we had Jason there as well. Last Monday, we met with little contractors about this. We have to make the shift. It's going to make some adjustments um to some of the fees because they're going to have to pay them now and we've been charging our contractors because we've been doing it now. We don't have to charge them. They're just have to pay on their own. So, it was a good meeting. It's just going to be a process to get switched over. I mean knows the system well, so she's going to help all of them.

>> Sign up at the start. >> Yeah. Jason was there, too. So, we got to hear and we got to introduce him to other contractors. So, that was that was good. >> How the contractors been for supplying drivers and you know, we talked to a year. There was time that we were supplying some of our drivers for there. >> We still have to do that occasionally is we are shortanded like I think one of the drivers she said and usually we're safe as long as we're safe. I don't mind it. If we're not safe then I don't care. Um but it usually works out well because you still have barber and pull for me bounces up and it's kind of a hidden it's better than it used to be. But when the spring comes, it

gets nasty. There's so many trips coming through it. I mean, sometimes you can have 30, 40 ls of stuff, but you just have that many trips going out that you just have to work it. But I think it's better on their end. They're going to be short for Kendra, so that's going to be another one down there. >> We are going to have one. He's going to finish up the year with them just because you know, we talked about that pulling the rug out from home during the year, especially in the spring. So, he's going to drive for them through the school year and then they're working on, okay, are we going to replace them? But he also can, you know, if they run into an emergency, that's the nice thing about him. He does

have the CDL, he does, so he can jump in an emergency situation. Let's say for an activity, for example, he could jump in and drive the kids if he has to. Do we build do we build a contractor then for that for supply and driver? >> Um usually they pay the driver direct. >> We just they punch out our time and move. >> Yeah. It's the same. >> Yeah. And I suppose all the resources in because working with contractors are really good. A lot of times we'll have a driver show the bus and she'll say to find a driver deal I can find a driver easier than I could find a bus. So yeah, everybody works really well together and that's probably what keeps us going because we are very very fortunate. >> You talk

to other places. Any other questions for Eileen? I'll just say that Eileen, I think you have one more report this school year later in the year or is this the last one? >> I'm sorry. Yeah, >> just because she runs off into the sunset that this is their last report. I couldn't remember and I should have looked >> myself like you girl. >> I just uh I my time here. You've been a godsend for me and I just really appreciate all you've done. I just really do. And we can talk about it later too this year, but it's been fantastic. Uh, I always say no no no news is good news and you just take care of so many things that are not always fun and I get parents being upset and you just manage

that and uh I just really appreciate it. So I want to make sure I share that. >> Thank you. >> Yeah. >> All right. Uh we will move on to 6.3 committee reports and we'll start with the district leadership team recap. >> Yeah. So uh Laura was unable to attend and so um I was there. Uh the juniors in SE did the presentation. They did a really nice job uh of just talking. So Joe had met with them I know three four times to put it together and what they wanted to talk about u things that they brought out to college in the in high school. wish there were more offerings. Um, and Joe is in a constant discussion with MState. We got we had to switch math to UMC. He's been the credentiing. It's

just been a lot. So, we said too, it'd be nice to offer because they were asking for maybe something in business and and maybe becoming a CNA in high school. And these are things Joe's working on. The problem is is who can do it, right? And who's credentialed and who isn't. So that was a a part of the the conversation. Uh the other one they did say which was nice to hear from high school kids, they appreciate the new attendance policy in the handbook. Do you guys remember we had to have that addendum to the handbook? And the reason is now it's 15 days and and you know we had that discussion, what's the right number of days, right? So 15 seems like a lot in a semester. Uh and they agreed and so like

Joe said, you know, it's something we can tweak in the future, but at least we have something. and they just thought it it has improved attendance in the school and also holding people accountable that you did not care now credit. So it was interesting to hear the kids perspective and it was real positive. So that was nice to hear. Yeah. So go through that. No, it was it was nice to hear that. Um there was some discussion and this is probably more on me than anybody and I said that there too is that we talked about they watch the news in the morning and they see that so and so is e-learning and then we don't have school and then we have a makeup day. And so when I talked to them about it they

said oh well then that makes sense what you're saying now but they didn't know that you know why are we making it up during the year or whatever. And I said the board and I we'll have some more discussion. So if you look at my report, it's it's on the top to ask about what do you guys want to do with that? Because I said we've had tons of conversation about next year's calendar uh for giving for students. What do we do with staff? Um we want to make up days. And I said, you know, my problem is I want kids in school. And when you have them in school, they're better. It's safer. It's more learning. It's all the above. But um tweaking schedules and having it on there works for some and not

others. So I said it's a constant battle in my head too. What what's the right thing? So So that was interesting. We had a very good discussion with them about that. Um >> so students perception of what they would like to be learning after. >> Well u yes and no. They were juniors and seniors and they're the high flyers. So they want to be learning their classmates that's maybe different but for them >> yeah and then the other part we talked about is middle school and the parents that are in there said well middle school's not as successful elementary is way less successful we had some elementary teachers that were there that said it's just it's hard to evaluate right any day for a first grader or a second grader it's like okay what are

we asking them to do are we really grading it what's that look like >> well it's hard when you create have it in August and you don't know if it's going to happen in November, December, January, February, March, April. I mean, I hope not May, but I think >> April is still a possibility. >> So, I mean, that's a challenge. So, I think our current structure is not setting our teachers and our students up for success for that. >> Yeah, it's difficult. That's why >> elementary and middle school at least. Well, and I guess uh I I would say this uh Nicole is that that's why we pushed for the makeup days. So they would be in person and when it's a storm day, yeah, don't do anything. Nobody has to do anything. Come on

now. Unfortunately, March 13, 16, but you'll be in person and you'll learn, right? Then after that, we'll go to the e-learning days because we all have an opinion on e-learning days and that depends on what grade level. So that's why today when we get to the calendar later we'll talk a little bit about that and then also um well my report to I'm going to talk about the 13th and 16th and what we want to do with that anyway junior seniors did a great job really uh impressed with their presentation the next DLP is going to be freshman and sophomores and so that'll be it for the grade level sharing but so Joel will be meeting with them and then we're going to hear from them what they so one thing I heard I heard

from a parent and from students or whatever that are in that that was the best one that they have been they've been to so far. >> Yeah, it was great because we get kids and they're talking right >> Yeah, it was it was it was good. So, it's always nice to hear you know from the students and you learn a lot >> or at least their perspective. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Right or wrong, right, it's still good. So, yeah, that was awesome. Um, next thing is the report. Any questions on the recap? All right, we'll go on to the MCDA conference recap. And I guess um, everybody went to different sessions. Opening session was okay. I thought it was okay. Maybe not the most inspiring um speech that we've ever heard probably in the opening session,

but I mean it was just fine. Just not very accustomed to that. But um what's that? >> It was mid. >> Yes. As >> you're to disagree more. Um, I went to a presentation on cell phones and community still water in Minnesota that had gone to a complete ban of uh cell phone usage. Although when you kind of expect it's really not all that together that's different than what we have. Um, but I mean they they were very much in the said it was a game changer for them. you know, it's hard to say what their school was like beforehand, but whether it was discipline or just engagement. So, I thought that was quite interesting. A lot of communication um went into that during the summer policy went into effect. I don't know if anybody

else has anything else they want to share from MSBA. >> I went to a very interesting um presentation on first amendment rights and the difference between a student's first amendment rights and a teacher's first amendment rights. lots of um important things to think about in our dayto-day and the decisions that we're making. So, I really appreciated the opportunity to listen in and um thought for sure >> the one the Minnesota State High School League. There was a breakout session about that. One of the things that caught me was the ninth graders. So, up until this year, I didn't understand or didn't know, but nth graders were not covered under any type of >> policy or insurance. Insurance is the bigger bigger thing. So you have all these kids that we had in the past that

really something would happen. They were kind of in their own and now it makes sense having a ninth grader saying we can only make up we can only have so many games this year. do so much so many uh projects or so much stuff that now it's starting to make less block because we program that was good also another class I went to talking about Minnesota paid leave which is learning and understanding more about that and how that you know school >> very good well it's crazy but I went to one of that's a referendum so I've been to plenty of them but It's it's just a matter of getting communication and the community all involved in a lot of the same things we know. Uh but it's just you take notes and you get

more information. You go could have done maybe that better. We did about the same. But yeah, good information. The other thing for me and this this is just for me selfishly is just um to meet with you guys at the board in a different setting. So we get to know who we are and what we are so kind of how you operate and uh that matters. I guess it helps me. Uh so in communication so that was helpful. Um and so I always appreciate that. Yeah. It was a good time even got cut short because of weather that is almost a refrain thing every year. So all right any questions on NSBA conference recap? All right. We'll go on to 6.4 the superintendent report. >> Yeah. Well we added this March 13th 16th. And the

only reason we have this tonight is and it's just I'm just going to throw it out there. So you as board members communicate with me what you'd like to see done. Um we have a contract with staff. So we have 180day contract. So uh I would say that they would be but you could forgive it for students if you wanted to. Um um that is a choice. Uh and then the rest of the way the rest of this year will be e-learning because our third day that we had as a makeup was uh marking day which came has gone by and so it's not available anymore. So the rest of the year and I shared this with the admin too from now on learning but I heard some discussion about hey what can we do

with the 13th and 16th? Well you're the board I guess you get to decide. So, if you guys have an opinion on that, I just want you to share with me and then I can get that message out to the district. Um, if it's different than what we have today. So, today we have or the students and staff will come back on the 13th and the 16th for school. It be regular school, I guess, if you want. So, if you'd like to see that different, I'm all ears. You're my boss. We'll wait and see what you have to say. Um, next on there is a DG. Oh, sorry. Um, next up on that one and when decision needs to be made, >> I would like it to be sooner than later. So, if you could

tell me soon just because we need families to know. Um, and this is tough because um um yeah, people could have planned vacations and had it around that hop that we didn't have days, whatever. I get all of that. So, I guess I just like the staff, we already have it there. rest of the staff like to make updates as today is what we have into next year's calendar which we're going to talk about later today. Um we can talk about that. Um >> do we know how many staff are currently scheduled for vacations? I know a couple years ago we had quite a bit of uh disruption in scheduling and it was very difficult to find um so I came in and and sub in middle school classroom to make some part of the

problem try to be part of the solution. >> Um do we know what kind of disruption we have in that because I think that would play a part to me. >> Great question. I would I'm not going to put her on the spot because she doesn't have it with her probably right now, but Broo can look it up and we can get that to you tomorrow. >> Fair enough. >> Because if we have a large number of staff that are going to be off, I would lean towards wanting to have >> that make it a bit different. >> Have Yeah. the students were given and then the staff can either take a personal day or something because if we're going to already not have the level of education that our children receive regularly here in

just going to be watching a movie or something I'm not a huge fan of that um >> I think there there's some more information I think >> so like your staff meeting at your current board meeting tonight could you run home and quick turn it into the vacation >> I don't I know how that works right now and we can only have like 10% of people being gone or something. >> That's what the contract is. So that good great questions. We let's let's look that up and we can get it to you tomorrow. I can send that out. So you know so that's obviously an important piece of information when you make >> because if it's going to leave Britney in a hard spot trying to plug all the people in class. I just see

four or five >> and we're going to split classrooms and teachers are going to try to scramble. I think that's not necessarily a clever educational option for our kids either. >> I I do think being in the school is >> I mean for us our last meeting in class I would be a proponent to >> Okay. Yeah. So I just want to know because I want to make sure if there was something there. Um it is what it is. Next one DGF had boundary discussion. Uh we had a little bit of discussion at MSBA which was nice. Eller shared some information with us. Um I have a presentation uh at the intergovernmental retreat this Friday at the law enforcement center and I have a present. Oh, I shared with you guys what I'm going to

present. Had a couple little tweaks to today. I added some stuff to it like I told you. tell if you opened it today. Can't remember if I shared as a PDF to you guys or not, but in any case, um, but the bulk of that is going to stay there. I think it's information for the county. Um, for the people in Morehead, there just so many people that don't understand how kind of wonky that is. And, uh, so we've had great conversations. If you look at at that slideshow or that presentation I'm going to have Friday. Um, another big piece to that is so what's next, right? So, we're gonna have more discussions hopefully in what I put in there because I don't want to put more board in any kind of position. It's just

our hope is that we can get together with them and come up with a plan that we can mutually agree on. And it's as simple as that. So, that's our goal. Um, and I'm hopeful uh and optimistic that at least we can get in the room together, have some serious conversations that that um intergovernment retreat or the intergovernmental retreat is this Friday, so I'll be there all day. Um, it is our year to host. So, before I go any further, Brooke has done as you may know a ton of work on this helping me too because we have to organize food. We're organizing this that and everything else, inviting everybody. I've been talking to all the presenters here in the last few days because I have to MC the whole thing which will be its

own show I guess. Um anyway, it'll be good. But uh that's all day Friday. So that'll be it'll be nice to be done. Brook said we just need this to be over and I said I agree with you. So anyway, so it's an important piece for a school because we get to present all the other schools in county will present, cities are going to present and then the legislators will be there too. So that's why I tweaked my presentation a little bit for them. Anyway, >> uh it's all so there's registration fees and yeah and so next year the city of the city city of Dorth no um so Dworth is next year um and then just it's got five different people that rotate through the city of Morhead school. Anyway, uh administrative evaluations, I

just want to give you a heads up. Their midterm will be done in February. So, I'll be going through that with them for the director's will be tough on any questions additional questions. All right, we'll move on to number seven. This is um to approve the regular meeting minutes of January 12th, 2026. Do I have a motion? Motion by Troy. Do I have a second? >> Second by Angela. Any questions or discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor say I. >> Opposed. Motion carries. Item number eight. This is the consent agenda to approve the bills for January 2026 in the amount of >> $331,12. >> Thank you much. Uh treasur's monthly budget uh to approve the treasur's monthly budget report and file for audit included in this packet. um prove the retirement of training teacher

event at the end of the 2025 2026 school year and to prove the fundraiser as presented. Do I have a motion? Motion by Nicole. >> Any questions or I just Yeah. I just want to say obviously Trina Craigness has been in the district for a long time and she taught my daughter Shayla and Ally back when I used to teach here. Um they're still probably one of their favorite teachers of all time. So when they found out she was retiring so we had some pretty good conversations uh with my oldest two daughters. They just really loved her and I just want to thank her for everything she's given to the district. child to also have her and she was fabulous and helped us through some emotional things. We had one. I won't call out which

one, but one of them had some major separation anxiety and I don't know if we would have made it through first grade. >> I think I had a kid that would in second grade would go back every day. So, uh yeah, we uh will very much miss her. >> Kate Kay told her um her teacher was she would see her at Tommy's things and then Trina left the classroom um the years that Q been in first grade and she was like she still goes and hugs her and she never had her as a teacher but she just made that. So >> she will be missed much like all the long-term teachers we've had here who touched the lives of many students. >> Yeah, like we talked about the last one or last meeting. So yeah,

>> any other questions or discussion? >> I got questions or whatever. So we had Rand do a bunch of baseball field. Was that something that we paid for the baseball? >> Yep. This this was a portion that we agreed to pay. This was probably about $20,000 worth of work. And we So when this all was happening, met with the baseball club, Chase and I did probably offer and we're out there. And then to get it, I wanted to make sure it was finished off right. And uh so with our connection with Rand, they were more than generous. And he said, "How about I just get the material passed?" because if you've been out there, they did some paving even it. It's just really nice. And so I said the district can take that on. Everything

else is covered. So yeah, that was kind of the to finish it off. I just needed that property to be not up this. >> Yeah. Any other questions or discussion? >> Hearing none. All those in favor say I. I. >> I. Motion carries on to number nine noon in the finished business 9.1. This is a motion to approve the 2026 committee representative as we have a motion motion by second. Any questions or discussion? All I can say is I did the best I could. Hopefully I can something that you wanted. I try to balance it out a little bit with some of the secondary committees um that were uh kind of more time consuming versus BLT on BLT and I know that probably more time consuming. So I just gave one because there's always two

people that have one committee. Any other questions or discussions? >> Uh we should say this and this is uh yeah the Clay County Joint Powers that um is now the intergovernmental group. It used to be called joint powers now it's it's so they switched the name and so that's what that is. So we'll switch that on this document >> in the Clay County collaborative >> collaborative we don't have going on here because we have somebody that represents the school but we don't need it. >> We'll inform you of what's going on because there are some dollars uh that we receive through that through the collaborative but that would be information we share. >> Any other questions or discussion hearing? None. All those in favor say I. I both motion carries. On the 9.2, this is

to approve the week of January 19th 26, 2026 professional recognition week. Do I have a motion? Motion by second. Any questions or discussion? Yeah, just to repeat again, just a big thank you to them for all I do. Um and then that this week each day I don't have all the days in that up for you. Today was potato bar. Tomorrow >> Hydration station. Well, that's right. In the office. Okay. Yeah. So yeah, just something every day for them. >> Thank you to all of them. They um do remarkable work in schools and um build connections with kids that is probably Sam's lifetime. I could read the approximation. Minnesota is home to more than 20,000 par professionals who contribute to the success of students and their teachers and the support of services provided by par

professionals are internal to students excuse me par professionals take on a wide range of responsibilities to meet the needs of students and their care. Their dedication supports self-effective and engaging learning environments through Minnesota. Minnesota's Department of Education is committed to excellence in education and recognize the important role par professionals play in ensuring success that our schools in our school sorry and Minnesota celebrates the essential contributions of par professionals professional. All right, we got a motion in a second. um make sure it's not a resolution but um any other question or discussion hearing none. All those in favor say I motion carries on 9.3 this is to approve the fiscal year 2026 budget. Do I have a motion? Motion by second. any questions or discussion? So, you see it's changing um on there about $180,000. Um

some of those things uh so Marcus and I have been talking about this for a long time. What's different? Why is it different? Uh there's 30,000 here, there's a tax number, thousand here. Um some of the the special ed probably not the biggest change, but he said it's we have title carryover, we have assets reimbursement. Um, we also had, if you look at the bills, we had a $22,000 bill this month for a student that had to get some help and uh, that's just one month. So, it's or I guess it's more than a month, but that's going to be some ongoing things. We had a student that had to go to falls transportation. So, kind of out of our control, but have to follow the law. Some of those dollars will be in reimburse.

The other thing he said that's significant in special ed is of course we're getting dollars from last year and so as that cleanup happens a year later after everything is turned in in special ed and so some of those dollars he said he has to play that conservatively and that's why the budget just a little bit more there we could be okay one of the reasons we could get some of that back is through the cooperative that we've joined and how they'll get that but we don't know that so we need to be safe and That's why that number instead was uh a significant jump. Some of the other things um that we've had to do and this is kind of spread out I'll just say across the entire budget is things that we fronted

and then as the year goes on comes down we still have winter and spring sports. We still have a lot of trans just there's a lot that still has to happen in his projections. He just him and I talk always about being conservative first to make sure we're covered and that's so we add a little here, add a little there pretty soon. Uh but the biggest jump is that um carryover and whatnot and some other bills that we got we didn't foresee special like a 200 over $200,000 swing expenses. or 300,000 less more expense. >> Now you guys, if you remember last year, we got a nice check back at the end of the year, but that all gets figured out after all the dust settles, right? The other thing is is what we had

projected and one of the things that Marcus noticed. So in the August 30th uh projection model from the state of Minnesota was was substantially different. I think that alone in revenue was a $140ome thousand difference. Now when he ran it again in November, uh so we've been talking to Scott too. He said, "Well, that's the state has already started to make some adjustments because they're going to be cutting special ed in the future." And so it doesn't mean that's what'll happen because we get the funds the year after. And this is why it's hard to budget spent. um because we get the cleanup this last year's budget gets cleaned up this year and so in that projection model when Marcus ran the second time he just noticed it was significantly different and the state says

well that's our new projection. Okay, that's fine. But we have to turn we're still going to be turning everything in. And so at the end of the year, we could get a nice check back again. And that'll kind of offset that new number, if you will. It's just too unknown. And so we just said, well, we've got to make it we have to be conservative because if we don't get it for whatever number reason or the state says you're not getting it, because they've done that before, too. that say authority is not funded at the same percent and then here you are. Right? So um so when you look at that number the other thing that we talk about all the time is that number also is 1,5 students. We have 1533 right now. So

there's 200 just short of $250,000 there to come off of that number. We also had a family of 17 leave. They leave. Yes, it's not all gone, but a portion is. So, we always give ourselves that buffer because we give you the transit. So, there is a little wiggle room there as well that I think everybody needs to know. So the last remaining expenses 175 random expenses and 122. Oh, that's fun 6 for 45 and 47. That's both stuff and this is the money. till fund six is the u um uh construction and so that's going to be hopefully kind of slowly take care too with our meeting y so y that's six any other questions on Okay. No other questions. All those in favor say I. I carry on the 9.4 to approve the

first reading of the fiscal year 2027 school calendar. Do I have a motion? Motion. Do I have a second? Any questions or discussion? So this is the first reading. So this doesn't have to be boom and we're done. If you'll notice in the gray box and so this is I think um excuse me met with teachers they the everything is good. It's all coming down to start. What are we doing? Right. So in the in the gray box and I just threw this in there to get the show started. Oh that looks fantastic. Okay. We can do a second meeting and we're done. But if we talk about this and you look at what it says in the box, you like the makeup, you don't want to forgive you, however you want that to be.

Um, we're all ears. Um, when I met with Kayla and Cassie, they liked everything. Then we talked about the storm days. We talked about forgiving for students of one or two or three or whatever the board wants to decide. Um, then going to e-learning after that. the ones that we are forgiving students to have the staff to have till June 30th to make it up working with their principal. So in the summer sometimes our grade levels get together to do summer work and summer planning. Well, if we give let's say we're give three days, well they can do that then in the summer and we are not paying them extra there but they got to make them up. So that makes a perfect fit. Um there's a number of things and so they can work

with their site principal say hey our special ed department would like to get together and have a meeting so this group that group whatever group wants to get together we can also do that with non-certified so then they would have a chance to make that or they could take it unpaid they could take it as you know whatever other leaves they may have still um a teacher could take it as a personal say hey great I don't want to make it up I'm just going to take it which if they have it fine So I think that's the biggest um question I guess for the board >> precoid and then did we always make up like how were schools notice handled precoid pre- e-learning pre >> I would say yes and no um depends on

the school district right and so previous districts that I've been a part of um storm day was a storm And then you made it up at the end of the year or you made it up sometimes. A lot of times it was June 1st, second, third, fourth, which we found like was how many games of kickball you want to play this week or how many swings, how many, you know, hours you want to spend on the swing in the playground. It just ended up being kind of like, okay, check the box, check the box. So then was that was some of it. Some of it was just forgiven. And then staff made it up June 1, second, third floor. Um that's the previous school I was at. It was forgiven for if the students they

had four storm days, they got unforgiven. Staff had to make it up right after school. That's just how they schedule it. So that you make the kickball comment. So isn't that the same? I mean the last week is isn't the last week similar to that anyways. It's not much going on. So now you're just the next essentially it's just the next week or whatever going to be kickball instead of the instead of the >> and I don't you know what I mean? I guess by the end of the year there's still things happening right so they're doing tests they're doing things you know the last week it's what happened in the past when you got to make up days and it wasn't planned that's where the days kind of go we're done that's the last

week of school today I would say is not necessarily that way I don't want to speak for them though but uh there's still a lot happening it doesn't mean that they don't get outside some at the end of the school year um but you would think concentration levels for kids in May in general probably not as good as I'm sure as June arrives probably even worse. I mean I I think that's sort of like you know the anticipation pretty core probably at third grade as long as you get out of school. So I mean that's my perception >> I guess more than just like this is the last day sort of like that year. Well, the other thing is if the calendar says we're done the animation, it's nice to be happy, right? Staff has

a lot to do still, so they can have plenty of things to work on. Um, if like I said, most of them, I would say, and Britney, you know this, I'd say almost every grade level meets in the summertime to go and start planning for next fall. >> So, that's where I think it could be useful, too, right? That if we lose them during the year, and the reason I say have it done by June 30th, because that's that's the end of that time. Yeah. And then start new again. So >> I have a couple questions. Yeah. Um so teacher contract days is 180 and our instructional days that's our student contact days, right? >> Yep. >> Those 172. So how many are required by the state again? >> 165. >> Okay. So then we're

still above because I don't want to just >> Yeah. I don't want to. That's not a great plan. Um but 172 instructional days, six workshop days doesn't equal 180. Um, it's the two days. Sorry. >> And there's conferences. >> Okay. I was like, >> I didn't go into law enforcement. So, just making sure I was listing something there. Um, >> yeah, because there's the conference is actually equal up to two days, too. Yeah, >> that makes sense. >> Okay. So, then we have our um I'm a proponent for the storm days and then having teachers make it up if that's what needs to happen with contract days. Um, but I also think um I received an email from Britney who can't be here today and she wanted to make sure that her voice was heard

and she um is a proponent for e-learning dates first so that staff aren't having to make it up later. Um, and so just wanted to make sure that her voice wasn't factored here. I do think if we are going to e-learning days right away, I I do think we should restructure it so that students are in front of their teachers for a career portion of the day as opposed to blasting out um self-paced work. Um because I don't think students get as much from that that our student our students learn so much more from their teachers um and getting in front of them whether it's in front of a screen or in front of the classroom. Um, I obviously I think classroom is better, but my my concern with e-learning days is when we as

a district send out either busy work or self-guided work or something and the student doesn't have the availability of that teacher right in front of them. and the accountability piece of that too because whether you have 20 instructional minutes and then you've got 10 minutes of self-paced whatever time of work then your homework's done due at the end of the day and that's your um I was looking it up online there's several ways that different schools do that um but giving the staff you know that modified schedule that two-hour late start schedule so they have two hours to prep for their lessons or something and then getting the middle school and high school online so that they can connect with those students give them that instructional piece. I think that's very important. So, for me,

that's the hangup I have with um with some of those those pieces is the fact that our teachers have so much to give. And if our kids aren't getting that and they're trying to do it self-paced, some kids, one of my young children would be very on top of that. She'd have her whole stuff set out on the table. She'd be dialed in and she'd be done, you know, at the end of the school day. probably she'd be studying for the next test two weeks from now. I mean, that's just how she rolls. The managers aren't going to follow that same rule. And I know that when I worked in the school, not everybody had that self-paced driven attitude and they're missing out then on that great education. >> Yeah. I think one of the

major challenges we have in elementary is they're going to grandma's house, >> they're going to daycare, they're home alone, supervised with their high school brother and they don't connect because they just can't connect and so that's trying >> we don't have devices and we're transitioning out of devices. And so I mean it's just it's it's just this and then like the middle school my biggest concern on it is because I like it let's connect and then when you don't connect so Mike I didn't connect but Angela did oh zero f what did we do you know it's just grading and it's just such a oh I couldn't I tried to get in but I couldn't maybe that's true that's not true there's so many challenges with that connection I totally agree with you I want

them in front of the teacher too that's why I like the makeup days then the makeup days create a whole other But when a student is sick, right, or a student is on vacation or has an injury or something, >> like the teachers work with them the next day to try to figure that out. >> Um, so I think there's still value in that e-learning situation or makeup of some sort. So that yes, there has to be concessions for the kids who either can't make it up or weren't connected or maybe they just who knows what their situation is. I mean, I've responded out to calls for kids, you know, I I know all about that side of it, but I think there's still if we're going to have something like that, I think there

needs to be >> more connection with >> some staff and and >> more staff with more students. Yeah, I agree with you, Nicole. I just Yeah, >> just to know somebody cares if nothing else. I mean, that's the great value of our school, right? There's some kids who come to school and this is the only place that someone cares about them and loves them and feels like this is their safe place. And if they can't find that safe place anywhere besides that screen, well then at least they know that, you know, somebody is on the other side and cared loves loves them for that day. That might be the one true connector they get. And I know that that's not always the purpose of the school, but I also know that that's a reality of

our school. I also think though I think there is something to be said about having a storm day and having a true 1990s I'm staying at home I'm watching tea I'm watching the prices right type of storm day whatever that I don't think I mean I think we expect so much out of our I mean there is something that they need to feel that connection I agree there but I think there's something to be said about I mean we expect so much of our kids today I mean I go back a wage or whatever not as far as Shannon we go back a wage or whatever thinking about what that what that was like or whatever just to you know relax and not have to do anything for the day or whatever and what that

meant and the staying up late hoping that school is going to be cancelled the next day and I mean everything comes so fast there's so much technology there's so much today that you know what is I mean are we pushing our kids too far too much or whatever do they need that relaxation or whatever so I guess I'd be a proponent of I don't know what it is because we live in Minnesota so is it going to be a three three day three day uh event this year or is it going to be a 12 day event you you don't know and I think we have to have a mix of that in there if it's if there's a certain number of days that's three days or whatever that is that hey those ones are

gone and after that we do the do the e-learning. I do feel though that we have to have more structured data in the e-learning than we have today. It's not it doesn't it doesn't work. And if that means teachers need to update update their stuff more frequently for the younger grades uh for the older grades there is some type of classroom or some type of disability but besides push that there is some type of yeah I will say I will say this because we're that's next right for this year. Uh, I'm not going to predict the weather, but the way this winter is going, we'll probably have another day and we're going to have some e-learning potentially to see how is it going to work. And I, you guys have to help me. I don't

think we had any learning e-learning last year. I don't think we had any e-learning the year before. Did we have one last year? >> We have one. >> I was thinking we did it, but maybe I could be wrong, too. I was thinking we did it the last two years just because it's been nicer, too. So, it's been a kind of a disconnect on e-learning also. um we all have a different taste of what e-learning and what that is. So, I don't know. I guess that's something now as we move forward. Um, and that's why I sent that out whatever it was last week to the admin saying, "Hey, remember all the learning and so are we ready?" And so, >> yeah, questions or discussions. >> I just want to reiterate that I I am

with Troy on the the three days. I'm cool with the three days forgiven for students. Um, I just wanted to make sure they're looking at the structure of the e-learning is the opposite. >> Yeah, I favor this proposal even though there's an odious e-learning day which I believe close to and it's like but it's after three days so I mean there's not many of it not much of it and yeah hopefully >> not only just because it's e-learning but just because that means it's a lousy day outside. Any other questions or discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor say I. I. I. >> Motion carries. On to 9.5. This is to approve the nertified contract for KDP food service one step one effective January 15, 2026. Do I have a motion? Motion by second. >>
