all my name is I am a citizen of parter County and I want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to speak this evening the one and only goal for the education system is to prepare our children to enter careers and to be productive citizens it is not a counseling session it is not somewhere to find yourself children depend on us to teach them keep them safe and help them grow the educational issues we as adults talk about among ourselves are statistics funding busing and Scholastics a goal of that is to help our children to become successful and I'm sure that is your goal as well in recent months Scholastic publishing books has taken a public stand with subjects such as gender Equity transgender lgbtqi plus and however many other letters they may add
as well as a host of other topics too sensitive for our schools and Book Fairs parents need to be aware these books are written with a very young child in mind because of these books they are putting our schools in a difficult situation since the NC general assembly with Senate Bill 49 recently passed legislation prohibiting our kindergarten foror grade to be exposed to this material St statistics prove that less than five % of the entire population of North Carolina alone identify as lgbtq Plus in my opinion this may be what is causing the anxiety depression and confusion with our children today children should be allowed to be children enjoy their childhood and not be exposed to adult issues and dramas and all the other difficulties of adulthood yes we celebrate all good things with our
children and their successes I would also like to see us celebrate the fact that we do not expose our children to developmentally inappropriate materials rather that be for a book bag or a counselor small group session thank you thank you thank you next up we have Miss Shirley Redford [Music] SP my name is Charley Redford the retired teacher of 35 years I appreciate your service to hisst the effects of inappropriate material pornography and Co shutdowns have negatively impacted the mental health of a young review of Statistics show our children have increased sense of hopelessness and consistent feelings of sadness that has increased 40% between 200 9 and 2019 for up for us high school students 16 states have passed resolutions stating viewing pronography is a mental health crisis at a cral stage in brain development
exposure to chronography can change neural Pathways that permanently affect the child's abuse of sex people and real relationships sadly pornography can also cause children to harm other children when young children see pornography they tend to practice it on others schools and school media centers are allowing sexually explicit content to be available to minors that put students at a higher risk of anxiety depression isolation sexual assault and suicide why are we allowing this to happen to our children this I got from a PVE a pavement education project was m and it's on the your handout of where I got this information the list of books show locations in carner County Schools these books have sexually inappropriate or confusing gender concepts of content some including self harm suicide violence and a races no database is available to
determine whether or not classrooms may contain these things therefore we encourage citizens to ask teachers and administrators if these books are present in are are being used in our instruction of any kind now I have I chose [Music] two I chose two two of these books some of these books to talk about are in schools but anyway Calvin J Ford is supposedly I haven't had the time to go to each each school so helping the administration would check on these books that you have a list of Calvin by Jr Ford is about a young young boy who uh wants to become a girl or or vice versa and it goes into how the parents went along with this child and took them for haircut must be a boy and change of clothes and he was
worried about how the classmates would uh accept him if this gend change Drama by Regina t t is is supposedly in Atlantic Broad Creek Morehead Newport middle Smur Elementary and white open Elementary this book is about thank you section thank you Miss Redford next up Miss Holly Amato all down I'm gonna pass around um I'm going to pass around some cles on some of the Scholastic BS okay so the dangerous truth Scholastic and how would you fight that maybe thinking that Scholastic is a huge company and some bad bols just slit through the crack seems reasonable but that's not the case Scholastic is not the company you knew as a child just like Disney Target and but light Scholastic has succumbed to an agenda that has led them to flutter schools and libraries with tools
that promote dangerous and anti biblical ideas many of their books appear Harless boting bright and colorful covers with ping titles asking ideas like gender fluidity and the LGB TQ I A Plus agenda was 75,000 Scholastic fairs every year these agendas are being heavily distributed teachers are using them in classrooms and they are readily accessible in the children's sections at both public and school hyar they're even making their way into homes through takehome reading assignments and F Fair vir pures so the solution it's time to cances we've got to get rid of them if your principal librarian or School Board member is time to take a stand if you're wondering how to replace the books and ensure that children are exposed to adult content that as mask as a harmless children we also provide transparency with
our screening criteria that's not all though at Brave weing fair to the next L by offering an immersive experience uh that will bring both here to life and Spark your students imagination students will leave our Ware is actually wanting to read um Brave W fairs promis to protect and FAL children's inocence which gives H the freedom to job be GI uh ra fairs are full of the classics like narn tomare Fox Car children series and of course new and enriching stories like our very own Brave book Freedom Island series bra Wills on fully customizable hate to cut you off I'm sorry thank you than yeah thank you so much for coming thank you thank you next up drro [Music] Ramy resar K through 12 of2 from scac I agree with h it's time to find
a new company for Book Fairs um choose book strong however this company is used there persuasive ideas that they have and right under the cover it says letter to Educators caregivers and Advocates I'm just going to read a little short short little exer in this books and literature are never neutral by engaging with CER literature for children and young adults who are disrupting St Pro that implies being cisgender heterosexual and alosexual are the default you are showing children an expanded way of thinking and being that Bates all children and all if you are a queer educator or librarian it can be both joyful and and emotionally exhausted to teach or highlight literature that reflects your experiences now why would you want to reflect your experiences onto a student that's not why kids go to school
you don't put your ideas on you teach them education from the guide so that right there is Twist word to the and in the glossery in fact there definitions on what all of their different progams mean this one gender this is a socially constructed category for dividing humans an individual's gender is often presumed by others based on assumptions about their gender expression pronouns and word sign sets but an individual's gender identity can only be determined by the individual himself I don't know I young but I was taught that God determined your gender when you were born and also if I'm I say I want identify as an africanamerican that you're Hispanic do you identify no should be promoting changing gender I wanted to tell a brief story um a friend of mine picked up her
grandchild from Bo mle school on first day of school year and she said shared with her only the we know and it's her first day in Middle School her social studies teacher handed out a handout the first question was what are your prods and in just trying to explain that students some of them didn't know what she meant she ended up tell was to be with boys and girls to be with girls and that's thank you thank you so much next up maryan Holland hey I'm Maran Holland uh I live in and I was blessed to teach um first and second graders for 30 years in Mad City and I always had the parents um come in and um tell something about their their profession had when we talked about I had the principal come
in I the janitor come in and all kinds of people come in and tell about what they did to make our school going smoothly and everything going smoothly and okay that was back when we take great field trips and I I we did a lot of studying in the classroom and ended up culminated like when we did food groups uh we talked about the different food grps and then uh uh we played meals and then it ended up we learn how to to read labels on cans and all that kind of stuff and then the parents came in and helped him shop and tallied it up and all this stuff really had really parents every possible way now I realized that as children get older uh the parents can't be involved as much but uh
a lot of the stuff is going on in the classrooms uh the parents need to be aware of just to keep their their sense of security safe you about what their children be exposed to some of the stories I read have made the hair stand up on the back of my head I mean the back of my neck and um understand a lot of that stuff but I do know that a lot of parents need to you need to go over their work at night uh ask the parent the children even if they're older tell them talk about what they're doing what they're studying and what's going on and the other thing that I wanted to talk about was B and I feel um I feel really strong about uh this will you st uh
people who bully are usually jealous of a lot of them are jealous of something about a person and others uh uh other people might be in bues may be coming from a really bad situation at home they may be hungry in an abusive situation in home and they're just sort of passing that stuff along so we really need to uh we really need to uh to if if your child is being bullied just tell them to pray for that person that's bullying them and go find somebody else thank you so much thank you and our last speaker for the evening is Susan Sher good evening and thank you for letting me speak I am also a retired teacher German professor and know pronouns are usually she and her occasionally in since last we met North
Carolina has adopted un unal opportunity scholarships tonight we will hear about parents rights in North Carolina these two moves have more than a little in common number one we do not need them they are Superfluous number two they sound like H currents number three they each result from years of planning energy coordination and money number four they forc the question why why so much effort and expense for something we do not need number five they camouflage but also thinly very different agendas than their name suggest the opportunity scholarship is a voucher of roughly $7,000 per child intended to transfer funds for the common good to private Pockets to the owners of four profit private schools and other lobbyists and campaign donors parents rights would limit the rights of transgender and lgbtq students and their teachers
today tomorrow very probably the RS of schooled Librarians and reading counselors and science teachers but more than that parents rights is an emotional issue perfect to deflect attention away from the rights of parents who cannot afford to send their children to private school even with vouchers whose Children's Schools will have less money for teachers Specialists enrichment and bus drivers I hate to mention politics but I did not make this political we all know which political party has pushed these moves through that party is not a friend to public education let us please remember that and not send more of those representatives to Raley thank you very much thank you next up is our um do we do we have a consideration for r motion to approve the consent agenda as presented sorry made that motion

do we have a motion to approve the policies for second read is presented right the motion by Mr Goodwin do I have a second a second by Miss Chadwick all in favor raise your right hand unanimous all right Mr BRS School Board Association regarding recent legislation these Provisions specifically address mandates that the parents Bill of Rights we didn't have to adopt any new policies because of the parent Bill of Rights we just had to make some changes to our current policies previously in my memo I told you that the legislation went until effect August 16th after the budget passed it now has changed it to effect day of January there really no need to go ahead and this in first read I can bring this back to in second read some of the policies do
reflect some of those changes in the initial legislation I think there were some other changes that were made so I anticipate another packet of policies School Association cor additional changes so I'll bring that to you hopefully second next month also there's code of student conduct there's been some minor edits to that part of that is to make sure that we're with state laws or Consequences and then also weating consequences that need language and then Mr whent me even today about another suggestion those policy thank you Mr payl if you will give us an update on Capital project projects and bond project updates yes ma'am so for capital projects uh right now uh we are currently accepting bids for carpet replacement at East cartter High School cown high school and bro Creek Middle School um we

very grateful for the work that they do in the system remember that next week is National School launch week it's an opportunity to emphasize the significance of offering wholesome School meals for our students recognizing their positive influence on the child's life both academically and Beyond the classroom and finally please note that Monday I October the 9th which is next Monday is a mandatory work day there will be no school for students but it will be a professional development day for staff so thank you m chair just concludes my comments do I have any additional comments from board members I know we've yet to understand the parents Bill of Rights and that that will evolve with us but after read the link to the article teachers are leaving the profess I wish someone with greater authority
to move would consider a be right for teachers and administrators because so they're they're anxious I think all of us people again they're underplayed they work hard and maybe awise isn't answer maybe it's not answer for parents but they must SM but we support the hard work they do every day on our students behalf aome any other oh funny my comments very similar um I just wanted to say that I know it takes a lot for people to come and do public comment we appreciate you doing that um I was I noticed that several of you are either retired of former teachers we appreciate your work in the classroom and I love seeing that even though um you may be retired you're still very invested in our students across the county so thank you for
