032wishing to speak on a topic have been heard all statements will be directed to me as the chairperson and no one may address the board members individually please be reminded if your statement is too lengthy abusive obscene irrelevant or redundant your participation may be terminated please remember to state your name and address each and every time you address the board I do have a list from uh sign ups and the first person on our list is Elise uh where Shout warshipsky [Music] was I was I at least close yeah six months to remember how to sign it properly after I got married so um my name is Elise horshovsky and I live at five enclosure um I bear with me public speaking is not my strong suit but um I have three children in the
033Nutley School District I have two at yantic Hall and one in the middle school we moved here about three and a half years ago we fell in love with Nutley for its parks for its downtown but we've been welcome with open arms by our neighborhood by the schools participate on the school PTO as an active board member but one thing that I was surprised to find is that the Nutley School District um doesn't always seem to represent the diversity that it lives within the school district so I'm going to read a letter that was written to that was sent to the board of ed uh members just so that it's on public record so dear Board of Education as formally requested On The Board of Education meeting on November 22nd on behalf of a growing
034diverse population in Nutley and specifically those copied on this email this note solidifies in writing directly to the full Board of Education our request that the school be closed on Yom Kippur our holiest and non-working holiday Monday September 25th 2023 and in subsequent years as listed below we also request that no homework be assigned on that day and that teachers students and staff who celebrate be excused from all school activities without consequence in addition as the holiday season begins the weekend of Friday September 15th through 17th with Rosh Hashanah we request that no homework be given that weekend and allows students teachers staff who celebrate to be excused from school activities without consequence we believe that this action promotes understanding and respect for the Jewish community's religious obligations and would demonstrate that Nutley School District
035values this as well furthermore by allowing teachers and staff who celebrate to avoid utilizing a personal day Nutley benefits by attracting teachers to the district who would otherwise find more attractive working conditions in surrounding towns such as Montclair Glen Ridge Bloomfield Clifton Cedar Grove Verona and many others in fact in our research of Essex County and surrounding towns we found that Newark East Orange and Nutley are among the only towns that do not recognize the Jewish High holidays with the school closure we love Nutley and have participated in the town's many events such as St Patrick's Day Columbus Day parades many of us marching with troops and sports teams over the decades spring and fall festivals Santa's arrival at the park oval and the annual holiday tree and menorah lighting for most of us Nutley
036is the only town our children have ever known we are grateful to the board of education for the Forum provided and the support you've already shown in hearing our request an exit you continue that support by making an official thank you once again for your time and consideration wow well I will tell you for not being a public speaker you had that time perfectly um is there anything that that we need to add to that uh Mr I will say we we appreciate your feedback as always we are considering uh this in committee meetings at this time we are bringing it to the board there discussing calendar options and then that will start mostly in January um in the new cycle but we do appreciate your feedback we are listening um we we did listen
037last year when it was brought that you know sometimes on on certain days school events um can't be attended because students stay home so we we actually provide the principles with a calendar of when not to plan things for this current year we're listening now when you come to the microphone and let us know about this so thank you so much and the board will consider this in January thank you all right next up is Bill melnicki are you gonna hit the target of three minutes with with two seconds left they keep coming around Bill melnicki 36 Harrison Street Nutley um when I saw these young kids came in to bother with you even more what I saw what is the protocol when a teacher or a coach is teaching our young kids that are
038minors that come in under the influence of drugs or alcohol get taken off the field and the parents got not one letter stating what happened if our athletic director Joe parrot didn't step in coach nobody in the town knows what happened to JD Vic all right so I'm gonna have to stop I'm gonna have to stop you there Mr melnicki because I will tell you that this board will not under any circumstance discuss Personnel matters so the fact that you're mentioning one of our uh former employees it is not open for conversation so if you want to continue down and want to know the process I'm perfectly fine with sharing that's the question what is the protocol if a Coach or a teacher is under the influence as he's teaching or coaching our kids are
039the parents going to be notified again I will lean that over to Mr Beanie as our superintendent of schools you could talk to him about the process I talked to him several times we got nowhere okay well we're going to make it a public record then so he will discuss and I'm sure that he's going to discuss for public the same way as he discussed with you um so that you understand the process as per board regulation and policies when we're notified of of some staff member or student being under the influence our first concern is is safety of that staff member and student our protocols allow us to isolate the person make sure they're safe follow up with investigation uh everything resulting from that investigation is considered a personal matter and cannot be discussed
040so we're hiring a new football coach so we're not going to tell the parents what happened to the previous coach nobody knows what happened to JD Vick again that's the second time and I will be my second learning to you you cannot use uh you have to understand I don't I don't want to be confrontational I really don't okay so my question is how do we find out what happened to the past coaches that you gave no inkling what happened why we didn't have a football coach this year so again employees rights are protected okay just like anyone about the students the the students are protected as well let me finish the protocols allow us to do what's necessary as Mr Bania said to keep the students and the staff members protected so the parents
041should have no inkling what happened if our legal team tells us that we are not open to provide that information then we are not and so we act on the guidance of our legal department like myself should email everyone saying there was an incident on the football field so the parents know about it the the reality the reality is is that we do not control okay I'll do what I got to do we do not control what a what a person in the public may decide to do okay that that's not what they are so you're saying in Nutley teachers could come in drunk the parents will never know about it again as far as I'm concerned I cannot disclose any of the information that you're discussing are you allowed to drink as a teacher
042and not only that well we all know the answer to that that is not one of the that's not an acceptable property we'll never find out what happens to a teacher again employees are protected the same way students are so we're protecting our students you're saying that's correct we make sure that those students are in a safe environment if there's any issues that occur that is our protocol I'm glad you think that thank you for having me thank you [Music] and I apologize for the rest of the public but we unfortunately when circumstances do arise with employees we weeds cannot disclose certain information and with that we do use our legal team for guidance so I don't want there to be a misconception that the Nutley public school district is hiding anything but we are
043under direct communication with our legal team on what we can and cannot disclose and that unfortunately in times may not be what the public wants to hear but that that is the guidance that we have to follow by our legal team okay so I appreciate everyone here tonight again Mr melnicki I'm sure that that's not what you wanted to hear but those are the protocols that we have to follow and I appreciate your time here this evening you got you gotta you got a brief comment and then I'm gonna ask you to to leave thank you Bill melnicki 36 Harrison Street when do we feel it's right to tell the public that we have a new football coach it was in our Personnel today was it not but it's going to be coming up it's
044in our report that's what's coming up next okay so when somebody asks what happened to the previously coaches what are what is your response it's very simple we cannot discuss the outcome of a person's employment here at the Nutley public so that's what you're going to put in the papers no we don't we don't put that one people ask us that we we report when people are terminated on our forms publicly for the public just like when we hire somebody so he's terminated I I don't know what the status is I I don't know what to say what is Jade what is our coach's status coaches are placed on a year-to-year appointment and we are appointing a different coach tonight okay okay so the parents will never find out our kids don't have any control
045of what a teacher and a coach does we're going to keep our parents into hiding again that's fine you and I are just going to have to disagree on this but that that's that's what it is perfect thank you have a good evening all right anyone else wishing to be heard hi good evening my name's Arlene Krauss and I live at 136 Pershing Avenue I've been a resident of Nutley for 35 years I've raised two children in the school district and they thrived and they're now working independent adults and I think they both got a very good education and my son was very active in the athletic program as well um I'm here though you've heard in past meetings and email and tonight about the Jewish Community here in Nutley requesting the high holidays to
046be official days for school closings the calendar year 2324 would entail one day for Yom Kippur which is September 25th since Rosh Hashanah falls on the weekend there's a multitude of reasons supporting this reasonable request one scholastically hurting the Jewish students but what I'm going to focus on is the social ostracizing of Jewish students and an era of inclusiveness creating a true cohesive Community this act of staying open puts a spotlight on Jewish students leading to uncomfortable feelings on many levels families want to observe this holiest of holy day with their kids but I'm sure there's many students who resist or not too happy about having to be out of school because they but they should not have to face these kinds of choices due to religious observances in this current social environment where students
047are bullied religious beliefs and practices are questioned being different in any way can be ridiculed the last we would want in our Jew in our Nutley Community is to play a part in this 20 plus years ago unfortunately my son when he was in the Middle School um was at the end of uh the recipient of anti-Semitism very bad to the point that the principal Mr coluccio had to suspend some students so my son was was made as an other I wouldn't want you know times have changed but still we pick up newspapers we know what's going on in this world Nutley has always stressed Family Values creating a sense of true community and to be a part of that inclusion and to be a part of that there needs to be the inclusion of
048the other shouldn't Nutley lead by example and create a community that all faiths want to come to and raise their children I implore you to reevaluate your past practices and when setting next year's school calendar and all the future calendars the Jewish High holidays the holiest of all faiths be included in school closures thank you thank you Ellie what was your address again I'm sorry anyone else wishing to be hurt yes this is a little on the low side but good evening Mr chairman and good evening board my name is Bud Krause I live at 136 Pershing Avenue in beautiful Nutley New Jersey and I Rise with my wife and others that are here in support and asking for your support of the idea that there should that the school should be closed on September
04925th the Yom Kippur which is the holiest of Jewish holidays now why am I doing this because as my wife just said our kids went to school here years ago and I've never done anything like this so this must be very special and it is because you see I went to a high school of a lot like Nutley high school in Ohio and I was like one of the few Jewish people in there and I whenever the holidays came around I always felt ostracized I always felt different now you might say like oh so what it had a tremendous negative impact on me I think it affected my grades I know it affected the fact that I always felt like the outsider that was a hurt that took 50 years to heal so I'm asking
050you to think about the kids and what do you want your legacy to be here and don't you want to make sure that those kids feel a part of this community like anybody else if we really do stand for diversity if we really do think of ourselves as a family community then we really should do something about the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur of next year thank you thank you Mr Krupp anyone else wishing to be heard [Music] okay seeing none we're gonna move on to our resolutions Miss Dan checkmore an academic please yes Mr President I'd like to move academic resolutions one through three is written second discussion amongst parents about that because you do that every year thank you Mr Krasinski this training is in addition to our yearly mandated diabetes training that occurs

061and personally in my nine years as a steward for the Nutley Public Schools I have not had a single day that I did not Marvel at the nobility of our mission the uniqueness of our caring culture and the commitment and passion of our district and student body and I will forever be grateful for your confidence and trust in me together we Face many challenges including our special education programming a continued need to address our space issues Safety and Security in our schools and the global pandemic these form the book ends to my tenure the efforts in deep dedication during this time of all of our board trustees and community members delivered an unprecedented period of success proving that collectively the board and Community can persevere even through our most testing times today we are stronger
062than ever before and the new capabilities we put into place will continue to serve our students and Community for generations to come as I reflect back on all the time together what I'm most proud of is how we accomplish all that we did and what it says about who we truly are our infrastructure has been updated to include secure entrances within all of our schools updates to our high school gym the oval renovation the media center renovation which is underway along with many upgrades elementary schools we have integrated our pre-k program to extend education down to three and four-year-olds giving our future Learners earlier access to high quality education as we evolve to keep our schools aligned with our community we remain firmly grounded in our belief in the importance of doing things right our
063willingness to sacrifice part of our lives for something bigger and the humility to understand that while we cannot predict the future we can certainly prepare for it and during this time we made it clear that the Nutley public schools are a home for all who share our values this speaks to our culture and our people people who Embrace individual accountability and are nourished by our Collective Pride I would like to thank our Administration teachers buildings and grounds custodians Sports staff and all the work for that they do each and every day to support our students and most important I would like to thank my fellow board members for trusting me as President and Vice President over my nine years I will deeply miss the daily opportunity to be part of something so special come on
064[Music] come on I raised you better than that [Laughter] it's truly shaped my life in the lives of my family [Music] I have a wonderful Christmas Hanukkah Kwanzaa kind of see you prosperous new year thank you be well thank you very much Mr carnosol if any other board members would like to say something now's the time to do it foreign yes I would uh Charlie um Danny um you and I started this journey nine years ago um we were friends before that Journey but we became really good friends during the course of the last nine years and um I want to thank you for everything you've done for our district or our children I don't think the public really understands what goes into being a board member uh all of the long hours um you
065know all of the sacrifices time away from our family um to it is a thankless job um but uh those of us that do do it uh we appreciate what goes into it the decisions that are made that benefit our district and our our children um I want to thank you for all your nine years of service I want to thank you for your friendship and um one of the um the the rewarding aspects of um of this nine years is that we became better friends and um for me at least that's not saying goodbye but uh I'll talk to you tomorrow so thank you Danny [Music] thank you Mr frauer I I did say that I was going to be excited about not being on the board that that truly came out of my
066mouth on several occasions um so this is real so I apologize I love you guys and thank you for for everything yeah um Mr President I've had the pleasure of working with you on the board since 2014. and well this time I've known you and you've been a true voice of the community district and students if you've cooked cultivated teamwork and have helped to set a strong foundation for the board moving forward I respect your Insight and admire your dedication you have made a positive impact and I'm honored to have served with you and to be your friend thank you thank you Lisa oh [Music] yeah okay I wasn't sure how this was gonna work out so I kind of uh I kind of wanted to recognize Danny and Frank uh for their service uh
067Tonight Tonight of gratitude and appreciation uh we wish two great Nutley AIDS well on the things they have ahead of them both have certainly worked extremely hard for our children in our schools uh for Frank I've known you a long time you should know by now the respect that I have for you as a friend and a trustee your advocacy for all all of our children and Nutley is going to be hard to replace here my boys have been shaped in no small part by the programs you offer for all our children and additionally another layer has been our work here together your passion commitment we're going to be missed especially by me thanks for putting in the important time and for your commitment to our children and our community to Danny uh first I
068knew you as my brother's friend from high school and then more than seven years ago I put in for a chance to sit here and you wanted to meet since then you've become a good friend your commitment and dedication to our schools and our board has been commendable and deserving of recognition in one way shape or form you've been a leader on this board for almost a decade it's this time uh in this time in this time you've been a leader who has both been ready to take the hits during challenging times and eagerly sharing the uh the stage during times to celebrate you reminded us all to seek and find balance and to breathe and reflect our children in our schools are better off for all of your efforts and the work that you've
069put in thank you for all of your time and service to the benefit of our children and this community thank you I just want to say I don't have anything prepared but I I'm a public speaker so I'm prepared um I'd like to thank Danny for his uh service over the last nine years uh as Sal said earlier it does take a tremendous amount of time and focus to do what's right for the community and the children in this district and he has certainly dedicated himself to doing that um I'm gonna miss our Saturday morning uh breakfast at the Pancake Palace um where we were changing America day by day week by week month by month and uh good luck to you once and good luck to you whatever you uh do in the future
070my friend thank you Mr Riley much like Mr balasama I was going to honor both at the same time so I'm going to cheat as well um I mean Danny Frank I've known you both going back to high school uh Frank we played football together um and in it has been an extraordinary opportunity for me to learn from both of you over the last year um selfishly I wish that there was more time that we could spend together on the board if you change your mind you know where we are um but but honestly and to put it as succinctly as possible um the the district from the administration The Faculty the students and the town all benefit from the time that you put into this um from my family I say thank you to
071you both uh you have made our town stronger our district stronger uh my sons and my wife who was a professional in the district all benefited from the time that you put in here thank you again I see that from the bottom of my heart personally uh and professionally thank you for the lessons you've taught me over the last year [Music] I was going to do it to both of you that was a song [Music] on off doesn't matter okay um just speak loud Danny Frank um both of your um both of you and your leadership made my time in the Nutley Public Schools as a student the very best it could be and for that I thank you both very much and serving on the board of education over the past year with you
072guys um your mentorship has made me a better board member you're both going to truly be missed and things will not be the same once um you guys aren't here anymore so thank you guys so much again for your service to the community well I think I think I got something to say shocking huh um so my journey here started four years ago and I remember calling Danny actually was the one I called First and said uh you know I think that open spot I think I'm gonna run I think I'm gonna put I think I'll put that application in for it uh so I I kind of got on the board a little bit uh unorthodox as uh you know there was an open seat with somebody left so I kind of threw in
073that resume and lo and behold here I was that year and then I made a another crazy decision to uh to do this again for three more um but uh it was it was uh actually Danny who I called first to talk to and and it was Sal and a couple other guys on the board um but thank you uh for originally trying to talk me out of it and then uh and then uh you know join along with me when it was time um so I'll I'll end it there and then uh I'll talk again later I think but what I will say even to Frank um you know me and Frank had a lot of conversations about this when when he first uh wanted to come onto the board and and as many
074of you know he's you know he's also the superintendent of Parks and Recreation what brings in a whole nother Dynamic of the work that that you do on the board plus his day job right um but I think one of the things that you know Frank never lost sight of even through the challenges that we always face as a board um he's always had the commitment this community first and foremost never ever wavered from that um it's kind of what really binds us all up here you know even as much as we we can certainly challenge each other between what's best for the district um I could assure you that our passion collectively as nine board members to do what is best for the outcome of this Township for our students um is is done
075through a very sometimes challenging process but there is not one member on this team um that is not going to do what's right and sometimes we all just help each other get there um and and I think that's probably one of the emotional pieces for me is because I know how well this team has worked together to do so much fascinating work um and it's surreal for me so um with that I just Frank we got it we gotta we gotta make a pack right now that over the next at least for the first quarter for the first couple of board meetings we got to get here at 6 15. and we got to sit here and hahaha and and just and just to smile and and just make them a little uncomfortable that that'll
076be some fun for the first couple of meetings but thank you again everyone what do we got you're wrong you're up there Riley thank you Mr President uh and I'm gonna read a testimonial uh regarding Mr demaio where's Mr Frank de Mayo has decided to not seek re-election as a board of education trustee and therefore vacate his seat on the Nutley board of education effective January 2023. he had signified his intention of stepping away from active board service where's Mr demaio has served on the board of education for Nutley public schools for many years and also served the township of Nutley in a myriad of ways as a public servant whereas Through The Years Mr demaio has exemplified the finest qualities of the board trustee position at all times and put the students of Nutley
077in their education first and foremost now therefore be it results that the Board of Education expects to Mr demaio its deepest appreciation for his long and faithful service and extends to him its best wishes for continued health and happiness be it therefore further resolve that this resolution be made part of the minutes of the meeting and I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I'm going to miss you my friend um besides being a great board member from the last three years most people don't realize what him and his department and commissioner Tucci do for this District and it goes he's a humble young man and he doesn't brag about it but he he helps us every day in every way that he possibly can and his people do as well and we're going to
078miss that in your independent thought and your strength thank you the president um I would just like to say a few words about my friend Frank who I've learned to work very closely with over the last three years um and and like I had mentioned before Frank is in all due respect like it or not he's a young me he says it the way it is he doesn't he doesn't cut Corners too much he's pretty much out front which is the way I always was and I'm not going to change now and I don't think Frank is either but I wouldn't want him to Frank lets us know what's going on and and certainly myself being involved in with the children as much as I am Frank brings the whole new addition to our board
079as far as what's going on in the town excuse me what's going on in sports Frank knows the sports that's going to be dearly missed on this board um and and we'll we'll we'll we'll come to that someday but it's going to be dearly missed and I appreciate everything you've done for for the children and nothing Frank as the as the Director of parks and rec but also certainly more as a board of education member you've done a fantastic job for us and I'm sure they're going to miss you thank you thank you okay I don't know if Frank wants to be referred as Charlie but uh a young Charlie but um that was a long time ago Charlie uh but now Frank um you know you and I uh we work together with detachmentley
080we've been friends um uh but what I got to see with uh with with you being on the board is um is your your commitment to to the town to the to the district and I thank you for that um I I have no doubt that um you know you're you're gonna pick up the phone anytime something happens and uh call call one of us or all of us and tell us exactly how how you see it uh and and and I appreciate that because as Charlie said right you're um you're up front uh there's no hidden agenda uh what you see is what you get uh I appreciate that about you um I thank you for your service to this district and to our children and um as I said to Danny I appreciate
081the fact that you and I have become good friends and that um although I may be maybe saying goodbye to you as a board member um I'm glad to get those phone calls from you tomorrow so thank you Frank foreign thank you for your dedication and commitment to the board students and the township your contributions to the board have been innumerable and even though you'll no longer be on the board I know you'll always support us it's been a pleasure to know you and work with you and I wish you success going forward thank you thank you for everything okay that's me right all right so uh unlike the overachiever I didn't prepare anything however I was uh I was a little busy with my daughter's wedding last night um so you know I took
082a I took a leap of faith here four years ago like I mentioned before I was unsure you know I I felt like there was there was pieces missing um not that anybody does uh anything wrong I'm just I just felt like there was stuff that I could add to the board um you know as you've heard um kind of just up front I say what I feel I mean what I say um and there's been plenty of times where um you know I've been wrong I hate to say that out loud I hope my wife's not listening um but you know I've been wrong you know quite a few times but you know when I feel something I say it um I can tell you that myself and Charlie have gone nose and nose
083many times because we both have the same passion uh for the school district and the township that we live in um you know and and that's what makes good conversation pieces uh because there's honesty in in every room and every meeting when we have our committee meetings um everybody's honest you know we we say what we have to say we do what we have to do we get the job done for the kids on the families of the community um you know I've been kind of I didn't I just want to let everybody know that this wasn't because I can't do this anymore this is because my my daughter has gone on to the college level plays softball and uh when I'm doing something I like to give 100 uh if I can't give 100
084to the board which I will not be able to do with her playing and traveling um that was gonna step away I had it was my decision to step away just because of those uh those things happening in my life currently not saying I may or may not see you guys again down the road uh but it uh we will we will see where my life takes me at that point in time um but I want to thank the community for the support that you guys have shown me over the years um I'm still always going to be an ear obviously I'm in town I work in town and I do a lot of things with the kids still um and obviously here guys I'm I'm not going anywhere uh you know I'm around and
085I look forward to continuously working with all of you um on a daily basis thank you um and it's been real wait Frank do you want me to ask uh Ian if he could just remove the I was wrong part and keep everything else anybody else would like to speak all right seeing none we are concluded with our final meeting of the year um happy holidays everyone have a safe and merry Christmas or Hanukkah where Kwanzaa um and a beautiful prosperous New Year we need a motion to adjourn all right all in favor all right enjoy everyone thank you
