001yep mr larabee here mr states of neither and syria where it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice um good evening and welcome everyone as you see around the room uh this week we are recognizing our school board members volunteers in our community who take a strong commitment to improving the educational process for all of our students in the district and so we want to thank our board members for their time dedication to all of our students our students have sent some thank yous up from our buildings and we do have each of your seats some representative samples of the superheroes that we believe that that you are in terms of your activities so hopefully that'll be there for those that may not know our board members spend countless hours working in

002committees working in our meetings developing a school budget all as volunteers for no pay and we want to thank them hopefully we're recognizing their their efforts throughout the entire year but this is specifically the week that nationally we recognize school board members so on behalf of the entire school district my cabinet myself i want to thank our board members for their time commitment and all the excellent work that they do on behalf of our students uh your dedication certainly uh uh should not go on recognize and thank you thank [Applause] okay i need a motion for approval of minutes no i can't see her are there any questions about them on the motion made by mr ryan second by mr rarity all in favor all right opposed let's sing there is eight to zero uh

003so uh wanted to update uh the board on our current progress with um vaccinations we have a second clinic going on on october 28th currently we have less than 100 staff members who are not fully vaccinated those staff members will submit to weekly testing which we'll be doing within our buildings on a weekly basis on wednesdays we are working on the process for both surveillance testing and diagnostic testing for our students the difference being surveillance testing is when you take a population of students 10 or 20 percent of the given building and do random testing to determine whether or not a chole 19 virus is present for diagnostic testing this would be for students who present in health office for a particular illness one or more symptoms related to coca-19 if we can work on

004the diagnostic opportunity for our students it can also not only reduce the time that students may be absent from school but it can also potentially reduce the cost to families so we're working on that we have gotten initial approval once we get through the staff testing and our understanding of the turnaround time after a second round of testing we will start to look at piloting a diagnostic opportunity for students so the student presents in the health office the the nurses would be able to give them the saliva based test they put in a test tube and then we would send that off to the lab which is based out of syracuse the tests are provided for us through albany county department health so we would continue to manage that process um the surveillance testing is

005part of our reopening plan and that's really designed more towards larger groups looking at potential sports teams and looking at uh high risk activities is really where the majority of the surveillance testing takes place um so we're working on that we hope that the pilot of the diagnostic testing could take place in the next 30 days and hopefully gives some families some relief when there are symptoms of potentially excluded we do recognize that it is having an impact on our kids abilities to remain in school and on a regular basis uh we're fortunate that our cases although are consistent uh have not uh forced a shutdown in our buildings the large majority of our staff are vaccinated has a big impact on the ability to remain in work or in school for those students that

006are excluded it predominantly is related to their vaccination status if they're unvaccinated they become a contact they need to be excluded by the current processes if they're vaccinated and not showing symptoms they can remain in school so it is certainly a big concern both in the community but also academically overall academically we are at the midway point of the first quarter students are progressing well we do have some programs in place for students that may be struggling i know the high school is starting their program up called aspire which will help to get students some additional help after school hours from three to five and that is a program that was deemed successful last year benefited a number of students to gain their credits and we will continue that the middle school programs are also

007continuing tonight we have the opportunity to hear an elementary update so thank you all for being here so you said diagnostic testing so i would imagine when a child goes to the nurse for the running hours and the nurse feels it's appropriate to do a diagnostic test she would contact parents first correct in order to do that they would need to get a frontal consent and the current system requires a sign up it takes about five minutes it's a online app tool called clarify app but yes the consent would need to take place with parent filling that out we may also look at an opportunity to potentially have a drive through auction where we would have that prior to the start of a school day at a set location where families could come literally drive

008up keep their child in the car provide the uh the swab and then we would take that sample and put it into the bag it usually takes between 24 and 48 hours per turnaround so the time that we send it to the shipping company and the time they received at the lab it's used with 24 hours for the results so it really comes down to how how quickly the shipping companies can get those results so this is just basically um it's another option or a cost effective way it is a cost-effective option it may also be a time saver because now what happens is that the student presents with symptoms they have to leave school their their family then has to find them either a testing location or go to their pediatrician and sometimes getting

009those appointments is certainly a challenge so if we can do that to some extended house and help families out or when we try to to do that it's not going to be the only testing location we're still you know going to have families they're going to go out and see their pediatrician or put urgent care and we'd under certainly understand that but if we can help in any way we're going to try to look at that as a reliable option before and who gets the results the results go to the family members and then also to uh our cohort coordinator with mr roblotis one of those individuals to indicate whether or not somebody is presumably being negative or positive so the family ultimately will get the results okay thank you okay good question any other

010questions okay the new business i'd like to start with thanking all the students for all these wonderful displays amazing i love seeing student work um and our individual superhero things are just adorable that's really cute um also this tonight's meeting i'd like to highlight our principals and assistant principals for a big shout out um i think there's much more that goes on behind the scenes i know there is and people realize and especially in today's world of everything you guys have to deal with so we just want to thank you for all you do and we understand that you can't please everyone and you do your best and we totally appreciate it so thank you and everybody who's not here for them too and finally last night mr casey mr q and i had the

011pleasure to be at the national honor society inductions um it was well done we had a lot of wonderful students up there um i just can't say about this great ceremony we're very proud of our students and actually one other thing um also i want to acknowledge um beverly's parents and beverly du priest who was a custodian and who took care of this building in particular um spent a lot of tuesday nights seeing her and she's going to be there so he said no regrets to her family beverly was like a fixture here for years and years and she was here for every meeting she was always upbeat happy helpful did a great job and as she said she'll be better she's a nice baby any other new business i would just like to follow

012up on your comment about the national honor society last night it was just my impression it was so nice to have us getting closer to normalcy again because there was a reasonably large crowd and some wonderful kids with students were recognized as their parents and grandparents and other adults lovers of them were happy to be there so it was nice to be um the hall of fame ceremony was fantastic it was you know hearing the stories you know my one wish is obviously that we could have more kids on hand and maybe that's something in the future that we can work into a schedule but you know the the hard work and the appreciation to their to their families um and more so their coaches and you know the those folks that put you know

013a lot of effort um you know the cross-country stories and hearing all the successes of you know mr myers um could have been called the mr meyer's show yeah i don't know if he had enough hands to walk out with all the all the hardware so um and then you know it's related to sports work we're heading into sectionals um so i know on the soccer side because that's where i just came from uh boys and girls are having intersectionals this weekend so wish them luck yeah the hall of fame induction was wonderful uh i have one point of view while you were at the honor society last night i was attending the virtual voting uh of the uh this four and a half hour marathon voting situation everyone's computers were running out of battery

014that uh went along pretty much of the recommendation from this day after consideration two items that our district uh went in an opposite direction of lisboa's recommendation i spoke on both of them the first one was the uh uh for the requirements and the ease of of uh accessing out-of-state uh uh teachers uh for for hiring and requirements etc uh mr recommended a defeat of that however it did pass by a vote of i'll tell you mr voted 70 to 30 so that was passed uh the one that uh we the other one that we uh went in a different direction when this recommendation was for the oc's uh hiring uh purchasing um situations to allow other other vendors that did not pass that uh that was defeated uh 29 to 71 so we were

015we were one for two which is a back to the athletic hall of fame ceremonies um mrs lanigan i hope you'll take these names and put them in the record i would just like to on behalf of the board recognize and thank mr romer who was the athletic director put on the whole show with lots of help mr backus was the instrumental mrs backus mr dutcher with the work with the auditorium dr perry the setup crew the committee who put it all together and recommended all those fine people to us um that's friday night i greatly appreciated the ceremony that we had for the inductees the cheerleaders were wonderful and uh welcoming them in and anybody who could mention somebody else that i've forgotten i would love to have them roger watch out for the

016evening and did a great job as he did the previous year recognizing and i know he covered many of the athletes and was able to uh you know give some stories earlier so we appreciate his time commitment to uh his daughter was one of our nhs conductors um just in the remembrance is a long time friend of mine patty martia she passed away she was a 1967 graduate of our high school then she had a 35 year nursing career with the veterans administration hospital following her retirement she was a substitute nurse in many of our elementary schools especially for another 13 years so that concerned 2017. she was a great guy absolutely okay so now we have our um uh yeah two in person and okay so just a reminder that we um give us

017your comments um and you'd love to hear them but it's the comment session not a question and answer session okay thank you and we're going to start with mr dominic's video uh yeah i'm here tonight because i just kind of want to find out for the team what the south county schools should be a lot going on these days about cit 1619 project and how it concerns me so i want to kind of work now i can find out more about the books and encrypt them that that are in our schools so what we'll do is um we'll take our time to get your information together and then either dr perry and mr professor with that information okay is crt being taught in our school it's not it's not a question and answer session so

018we'll get everything right that you you can't fight racism with racism i think that's insanity so i'd like to find out more about and um what's the best way to get hold of you because um if you could give your contact information okay um welcome back hello uh south colonie school board administrators i come here tonight to speak briefly on two particular subjects uh one being the sports programs in the district and the other being the kobe protocols and restrictions currently being adhered to in this in this district uh first with regards to sports programs uh there's so much i could get into but i'm just gonna touch on a couple things uh first off last time i was here one of the board members mentioned something about strength training programs uh being taken away

019from varsity athletics that was like two meetings ago i think something like that uh i don't know unless you enjoy having a losing football team uh as well as like possibility of other teams this year i would say you go ahead and fully fund whatever strength training programs uh are needed for varsity athletics or what you know whatever's going on um let's see oh i give full permission to use any of the money from the spring of 2020 that wasn't used uh from the budget to just go right to the sports programs um give me full permission because nobody really had said whatever happened to that money from march to june that was allocated in the budget the other thing i want to touch on is the preparation of our college-bound athletes in this district

020when i went to school here we had an ncaa liaison uh jack kramer i think it was probably probably remember mr kramer uh well i can say from personal experience in a very poor job let me tell you a very poor job in preparing our college-bound athletes for division one of two college athletics so i asked that uh dr perry uh you take notice of this process uh from time to time as much as i know while mr robert is you know delegated to do that um and just you know keep up on things like you know making sure kids are taking the right classes that are needed be accepted into ncaa athletics uh as well as those students who plan on going south for college uh taking tests like the act in addition to

021the the sat which uh most most colleges down south require uh and you know make sure this lays on who you know whoever it is these days is helping students and parents to write letters to potential colleges uh for acceptance and uh that's it on the sports i've got a lot more to say but uh we'll leave that for future meetings um with regards to the coping restrictions and protocols um first off uh for the fourth time since i've been here um i'm gonna say i want all kobit restrictions and protocols lifted in this district immediately um a couple meetings ago i came here and i mentioned something about the nurnberg code i want to make a little correction of that looking more into that the nerve code when it was created dealt with military

022personnel you know of course you guys aren't but uh isn't it kind of crazy that you know with all this talk about mandatory vaccinations that that if you were military personnel and you did go along with all this that you would kind of be in violation of that maybe committed crimes kids here all right which time do i have left here um we got a good minute minute okay so uh with this minute and a half i guess uh some of these things that you're talking about with the vaccinations the nasal swabs and stuff like that the saliva tests uh they're all garbage even the inventor of the pcr test said it was garbage it should be used in terms of the they test for mere segments of a protein that can be present in

023so many other things including influenza and just regular mucus in closing i'd like to say that you know while i'm here for the fourth time uh kind of demanding this i'd like to some at some point the future to see one of the board members when the time is appropriate raise your hand say you know i'd like to make a motion to lift all covered restrictions and protocols here in the south county school district and then i'd like to see another board member now hold on what now whether or not you shoot it down i'd like to just show them to show some intent here okay but i would essentially like that second board member to say yes i second that motion and then we put it to dr perry where the time is appropriate

024reports for information to action we have our elementary academic update paper copies amber or whatever all right there's some out at the table right because we don't have the ability to reject they were planning on being in front of them um it really comes about because of the fact that we have new member new board member orientation over the summer and we went over some special ed things with some other things curriculum wise uh that we shared with you board members and we had existing board members in on that training and during the course of that training um the existing board members said you know it would be a bad idea for us to get a refresher on some of the things that are kind of going on around here and also the changes going

025on between last year and this year and kind of where we sit for some of that we decided to bring in people by level uh go through kind of where we stand right now not lengthy um presentations but kind of an update of where we're at and an opportunity for the board to ask questions of the principals and supervisors on the different topics and kind of where we stand right now okay so with us tonight we have stacey lindsey stacy miss renisch from saddle wood with sullivan from beater miss wells is k.a ela social studies and literacy and mr dollar from shaken road mr desco from roselleville and mr barab's title back there it's best to be called steam science technology engineering arts and math so that covers what we have we do not have

026mrs penn uh she was otherwise engaged but she traded off that she's going to come to the special ed presentation and when we go through the amount of special education rooms in the buildings you will see forest park and the concentration of special ed rooms and it makes a perfect sense for her to be here on that evening so we settled out of court for that one uh where we're at so to get us going we're going to start off with english language arts miss wells will run through kind of an update from that area and then mr barrett after that i won't talk a lot so you have on the slide a couple of things we're in our third year of doing the teachers college university study but now we're paying so those of

027you that have been with us for a while know that we started in k4 then we went to five six and now we're seven eight so our alignment is vertical um through e3 which is super exciting for us as a district um so we have had training all the way through k-8 by teachers college and we are continuing to train our new teachers because obviously they didn't have the benefit of the teachers college directly training them but between myself and our um leaders in the buildings we've been training them as well so that's where we're at with our units in both ela and our reading and writing rti we have been paid for for a long time we have to take a little hiatus and then we came back with full implementation three years ago

028now we have boards and running smoothly we're rolling out five six this year because fifth grade was supposed to be last year and then with the pandemic we decided to pause that so we're doing both grades and i've already trained them today i trained sixth grade so they're up and running and edoctrina is a warehouse it's an online database to store our rti plans and the only reason we're using that is because our share drive and our h drive and our google drives are not the best security place so um e-doctorina has all that which is nice because not only can i see everybody's in the district as a supervisor but when they go from fourth to fifth we don't have to send all the folders anymore that the principals used to love sharing we

029can just electronically give access to the next year's teacher and they can see the history of the student rti then go if they have to they go to special ed pst so then if it ever gets to that level the whole people personal services department can look and say oh jennifer's had this in second grade and so it's a really great uh program and our teachers just participated in a training monday night um for that and then we're going to be training more and more and more we have 36 members on our district rti team and they all receive the training and then we're going to train more and more teachers we had a lot of teachers say can i come i said no because the limit's 36 are the trainer but you'll get trained

030in november i promise so and it's nice because these are trying to record the training so teachers have access to it forever so if they forget what they have to do they can just play that video again and it walks them through the steps so it's a really great resource the other thing for us is remedial reading just to update you as i know you know but we have two in each elementary now we used to have three in three of our buildings and that's down three teachers since 2020. we had to lay one off in 2020 and then we had two retirees last year that we did not replace so i share that because it is challenging for us in our elementary buildings to service all the students who have needs particularly our l's

031um we have as you know the numbers are rising with our l's and we need more and more so that's where we're at in terms of ela does anyone need a primer on rci oh yeah rti is now synonymous with mtss which is multi-tiered systems of support it's been mtss just as long as it's been rti but most people used rti until recently because most districts didn't have a screener for mental health behavior we do now so we're slowly transitioning to mtss so when i train the teachers today i said rti mcss and soon will take away rti so that's just out of their um language i showed that it was a marketing scheme just to make more books that they could sell because it's really the same thing it's just looking at the whole

032child and what needs to they have before we just say they need specialized services okay i'm still going to be here i have another slide coming up but i'll pause pause for that so with regard to matt in response to the standards that rolled out eight years ago common core came through we adopted a program to support those new standards served us well in the interim but the time has come a lot has changed with regard to curriculum assessment as well as the new york state has now rolled out the next generation learning standard for math which is simply a minor modification of what the common core standards were so in response to that we spent our time previewing sampling piloting series and with the support and assistance of the board we are now at

033the onset of the implementation of a six-year adoption of i-ready classroom mathematics in grades k-6 we have rolled out what has proven to be a successful professional development plan leading up to the start of the year and then followed up on during the course of superintendent's conference day we've now got teachers throughout the district who are adjusting to the new process it is a rather significant change in structure but it is something that has now offered us an opportunity within south colonie that we haven't had for some time we were one of the first districts to provide students with online practice and assessment way back in the early 80s success maker was the pearson product we had kids engaged in cai well before other districts were thinking about it but that is a process that

034has always stood kind of in isolation from the classroom instruction the resources that the students were using in cai and the resources that students were using in the classroom were not directly aligned what's now taken place is a few years ago we transitioned from success maker to iready which is a digital practice and assessment tool that's online and now with the implementation of iready classroom mathematics we've now got instructional resources and such in the hands of our teachers and students that are directly aligned and speak to the digital piece that they are utilizing during the course of cai so when the teacher gets information as to what are the next best steps for students it's leading them towards resources that are now available and leading them towards lessons that they can be assigned for students

035to do either during the course of the day or at violet hall so we're now fully integrated in terms of what we're doing throughout the course of the day and what students are doing whether it's during the course of remediation okay additional practice practice enrichment or just you know time at home when they're doing things outside of our supervision um it's proven to be successful but there are going to be some pumps in the room anytime there's transition we happen to be you know um people who don't always handle change the best we like routine and we like doing things the way we have we understand change is necessary and everyone is on board and supportive but that just means there's a period of time when we adjust and we have to break old habits

036and develop new and this program has been proven to be very supportive it pretty much has come down to the point where we think of something we need something and lo and behold if we spend enough time looking i already has thought about it ahead of time and provided it for our our staff so um that brings me to the math ais from a professional development standpoint greg spent a lot of time from may up until superintendent's conference stay organizing various professional development opportunities for teachers and a lot of it was on the fly from trying to work from some things i was requesting so even credit for that but i also give credit to our teachers because of issues with subs and everything last year and other restraints or constraints we had to do

037a lot of it over the summer and we've seen was for in-service credit now i'll say that but we got i don't even know when we say what percentage went through level one and level two by the time we got the labor date ready it was a pretty high percentage pretty darn close to 11 yeah that we ran one on the tuesday after labor day and we caught everybody up then and even those people were looking at valuable time in the classroom that they were in the special development training so it's you know good to know that everybody's going in the same direction to make that happen from about the middle of may through about the first week in september it was a pretty heavy lift and then we had some more opportunities on october

0388th to where once again the things going on we're able to get two trainers so everybody's packing the rooms as best we could and people did a nice job with being able to rise to the occasion so we appreciate it it's not unheard of or unprecedented but i honestly did have unsolicited feedback that was nothing but positive in response to our most recent superintendent's conference deck people came forward complementing the the quality of the presenters and the consultants through curriculum associates which is the pro the company parent company of i ready and literally asking if any future opportunities we could make arrangements to bring the same consultants back so they always appreciate the help the information and the support that they get but they usually don't seek us out just to let us know about

039how positive it was and that was literally the case over the course of the last week and a half to two weeks since superintendent's conference that um so that's a good thing so um and then just touching upon the math ais last year you may recall we were here both ken and myself talking about how our reading and math ais staff have been utilized to cover pods in a virtual hybrid world so we had lost the ability to provide that daily support and assistance for math and reading instruction well we've reinstated that program and now we're even at a point where we've got the ability to just expand it temporarily so we're back to the point there are two teachers who are housed at leader those teachers spent portions of their week going out to

040the other four elementary buildings to assist and support both the classroom teachers and the tas and we've got ata in each of the other four elementary buildings providing a comp you know a combination of both push him and pull out support the best way to support the student in the subject matter is to see firsthand while they are learning during the course of direct instruction but their attitudes and behaviors are while learning while the information is being presented so they have a clear understanding of exactly where their challenges are what their habits and behaviors are and how to approach the difficulties that they're experiencing so we've got a wonderful staff who works diligently and long hours preparing ahead of time and then implementing the math ais program so thank you for supporting us the opportunity

041to reinstate it and the expansion there is just a realization of the fact that there's lingering effects from the pandemic and one of those is the gaps that have been created in student learning so we're simply trying to provide additional support to help us overcome those gaps so i too will be back with a couple of other topics during the course of the presentation but don't sit down i will not sit down social studies i'll talk about mentoring continuous science so i put k-6 but it's k-4 for our provisions tonight we use um the pnw boats these are just putting the north uh northern westchester sorry tongue twister um integrated ela social studies as a resource and it's been a resource for a few years now and it's available k8 but for our purpose is

042k4 and teachers can use that it has videos it has articles it has a ton of resources what we like about it is it lends itself so naturally to the units of study i just talked about in ela so it's not something extra that teachers are trying to do in this small amount of time right now and i told them um k4 that our focus is on getting that love of reading and writing back and bringing social studies content into that which i think that's very easy to do i think social studies is around us all the time at the k-4 level we're talking about you know neighborhoods and community and families and uh fourth grade we start to get into the native americans and government um the legislative atlantis some of you might remember

043schoolhouse rocks uh we still use those videos because they teach the three brands of the government pretty well so we're gonna start singing the song now i'm sorry you'll be in your head all day long um so where we're at social science instructional council this year because we have a district um diversity equity and inclusion team we are going to start working and making sure that we're in alignment and we are aware of the bigger district committee within our smaller subcommittee because not all members of social studies instructional counsel are part of this and so we're just going to make sure that we're following what they're the work has seen so we can continue that alignment and that's where we're having social studies um when i was here pretty pandemic i did a presentation you

044may recall of mystery science for those of you who are more here at that time demonstrating an appropriate alternative to some of the other programs one of which was amplified we were at the onset of an implementation of amplify science which is a comprehensive program he transitioned as a result of the pandemic the mystery science strictly digital program it's incorporated throughout k5 and it is dynamic it's extremely user-friendly students and teachers alike love it it's a lines to the new standards it's a fantastic program so it was a great find we are all of the areas that i supervise math science um technology they rely heavily on manipulatives things that we can put in the hands of students so one of the things that we'll be doing this year is trying to enhance the digital

045piece by providing what are called mystery packs that support the instruction and give the kids the opportunity to engage in those hands-on experiences sixth grade level has kind of been a difficult level in our district makeup because it doesn't fall into the elementary of most of the resources we provide and it's not content specific the way seven and eight is but last year i stumbled across a wonderful product called smart science it was implemented in the sixth grade it is digital labs they are in some instances virtual labs that the kids can take um and conduct actual experiments and such it lends itself to the multiple environments we've experienced as a result of the pandemic it is being incorporated throughout sixth grade so we've now got some really up-to-date standards online program throughout the case

046six um those are the mystery facts that i reference uh good things are going and the other piece of it is now that we are getting back to some ability to do things in the classroom the way we had previously we are re-implementing some of the favorites to our elementary science program um dissections chip catching butterflies and things of the night that sort that the kids really enjoy which are memorable experiences but for the most part science is doing well i will remind you this year was intended to be the implementation of the new assessment program aligned to the new standards but because of the pandemic it's been delayed so we will still continue to administer tests aligned to old standards even though we started transitioning into new standards a few years ago throughout our

047elementary environment content is kind of shuffled around it's the same content it's just in different areas about we will be administering fourth and eighth grade and it's now the year 2024 that we look to the new assessment program so our teachers will continue doing everything they can for the sake of kids to get them ready for that but we're in good hands but we've got a lot of wonderful things going on and resources to support that thank you your next couple pages here are special educations and you have a list of the classes that are each one of the buildings um within that uh you see like a life skills development classroom that has a ratio of close to one to two and most of you are familiar that is students teachers and then support

048staff on those numbers and that gives you the classes that are in the various uh buildings we weren't going to do a lot with special education because there is a standalone physical education um presentation later on so we're not going to repeat that but that gives you an idea of the programs that we have made from the buildings um not only the standalone programs but the integrated co-teach that's been rolled down the district over the past few years the next slide you have is a discussion uh the uh the ratio of the teacher uh the students and support staff how are we good on that i'm not i'm not familiar as to what the staffing level should be designed by each of the programs so it's pretty easy it's individually the program we're pretty good

049in the front think of it this way you can have less than 12 kids in the world but that last two numbers the one and two we get we have to have that all right that's something that's dictated so we really would be out of compliance in the room unless we had a teacher and two supporters um our specials uh a couple of things that are coming back is that our library for 25 years in this district has been flexibly scheduled means it's collaborative between the classroom the library and not learning independent skills in the library last year was the first time we were planning prep time in library and our librarians were out on carts so they went out to the classrooms because of uh you know obviously the whole good situation uh and

050this year we're bringing kids back in the libraries in fact during the course of land last year we were able to get kids back in the library so that is very welcome the same thing with art music 40 minute block and we're also back in the rooms and on that again so that has worked out well and pe is 30 minutes and has been opened up quite a bit as well in the next slide is english as a new language i will also roll that into a later presentation as well but this is to remind you that we right now are in three uh locations forest park saddle and shaker road uh it gives you an idea of staffing in each one of those buildings for those of us have been around for a while

051it used to be justin forest park for the longest time and that was for concentration services in one place but as you can see if we're sitting up around 110 to 120 kids just to k4 level we've got a lot of kids and we've had to spread it out much more advantageous to our families because we're more likely to have them in their home schools so that has kind of worked out for them so we are on the right track so you'll have more information in that i think we're going to wrap some of that into the special ed presentation because we'll have billboards available for that okay and i will put the cvla the cooperative virtual learning academy again i don't know if you want to give just a quick summary sure this is

052my last time i thought um so the virtual academy through boces this year as um mr barab and myself are the liaisons we have 22 kasich students currently enrolled um 295 total on statewide at boces so you can see we're about you know the percentage there last year in june at the end we had 362 k-4 students so having 22 is definitely a big difference so that's showing you how many are in person in our buildings um which is great our enls bed speech etc all that is supported by our own staff so we have our teachers that are working after school sometimes before school during our prep times to offer the special ed and ell services that our virtual students need because that's the responsibility of the home district so the k-6 program is

053going very smoothly boces is doing a really nice job kerry sunk us with the principal there she's great to work with we are in contact at least weekly um one other thing i forgot to have on here because it was since this we do have two of our teachers um coach bisonette and mike lubers that are providing art and pe to the virtual academy students at boces once a week they put out a google classroom post that boces then shares with their students and they're doing that just to offer those students not just our students but the entire boces program some opportunities and art and pe which is very nice boces was able to do music and library they reached out to us for help we were able to give them some help so um

054the students are getting all the four special areas so one thing i want to mention is that the collaborative efforts uh with with capital region voces and our staff they've had nothing but uh outstanding accolades for both swells and mr barab and our teachers that are doing the work uh at the elementary level i've been very appreciative of the efforts of south company and and our collaboration with them and the efforts of our teachers uh and it's it's a new process for them this year as you can see there's 295 students that makes up well over the 24 component districts within the capital region boces it's reaching out to downstate students as well so you've got students from all over uh new york that are part of that collaborative and you can imagine that questions

055that come up from individual districts level individual parents so i want to recognize both jen and greg for their efforts this year and the fact that we were able to support uh their work uh boces is very much appreciated uh of our board's venues our final section is on our social emotional learning uh we talked a lot about kids being out from march 2020 until some of them now and the sports and we have a second step program which is a social emotional learning program we've used in smaller scale over a few years and we've expanded and mr desko is going to give us a briefing on that hi everyone so uh second step uh just to give you the next slide you'll see is what is second step second step is a social emotional

056learning program and um just as much as we really want to work to help close those gaps and academic areas we also want to make sure that we're addressing the social emotional needs of our students especially as we welcome everyone back and there's varying degrees of transitions as our students come back to in-person learning so second step is a research-based universal curriculum and it's designed to increase school success and connectedness and also promote a safe and respectful school climate by decreasing problem behavior and teaching skills that reinforce students ability to learn have empathy manage emotions and solve problems so it's really a universal tier one intervention when you talk about um rti and mtss we're really looking at something that we can teach for to all students so students have common language and we're teaching

057those skills that they need to be successful um so basically the skills taught in the program it's truthful there's social emotional skills that we're teaching and those are things like helping kids understand and communicate their feelings helping them manage emotions solve problems and make friends and get along with others and then there's also the self-regulation skills which are monitoring and managing feelings thoughts and behaviors and just focusing attention on learning so when students are distracted upset or excited they know how to focus their attention to be ready to learn and um self-regulation is just a really important component that kids need to be successful in school and in life so the next slide is a unit of study for the second step program and every grade level follows the same four units and those include

058skills for you for learning because we know children who can self-regulate are better able to participate in learning another unit that's across all grade levels is empathy putting yourself in other people's shoes being able to see other people's perspectives and point of view and research shows that students with high levels of empathy make better progress in school and are less aggressive the third unit of study is on emotion management which is students who can recognize their emotions and they know how to calm down they can cope better in school so they can be more successful and finally problem solving students who solve problems and can solve conflicts with their peers do better in school they're less impulsive and less aggressive and then finally the last slide is on where are we now so um over

059the summer uh each elementary school in both middle schools established building-wide teams um that would be that would serve as a liaison for their schools just the facilitators for their own school so over the summer we had a district-wide training and uh our two trainers were kimberlinger and darcy jaska from rosello who trained each of the building teams and did a wonderful job working with each of the buildings so and in the middle schools we focused on fifth grade this year with a plan to uh extend it next year to sixth grade so teams are rolling out implementation in each of the buildings all classroom teachers in the elementary school and fifth grade have a second step kit that they can use in their classroom um and fifth grade is starting out this year there's

060also um apparent components school-wide assemblies announcements different activities that we're doing over the course of the year to promote those skills i do have just um an overview if you want to look at this is just a sample of some of the training that the teachers did this summer that just highlight the four units and there's some samples of parent letter and um just some information for you look anyone have any questions regarding our second step program there's any question on social emotional on anything else they've heard or anything else the math when you mentioned the math i think one of the first couple words you said was common course i started getting a little nervous networking two kids and then they mentioned this guy ready is already a is a digital practice and assessment

061tool it first assesses kids with a diagnostic which it establishes from their you know standpoint a grade level equivalent and then establishes a plan of practice for students who are below grade level on grade level or above grade level to proceed through the standards so and and it is completely aligned to the current standards which are a modification at the new york state level of what were the common core standards um the rollout of those standards was was uh i don't know what the word is exactly less than effectively less than effective the standards themselves you know what they're requiring of kids emphasizing problem solving and perseverance and things of that nature are all the things we want kids to be doing in the classroom right so yes i ready is aligned but it's it's

062more practice um oriented and assessment oriented um in terms of its structure and overall purpose thank you that answer your question yes thank you mary beth about uh i'm on the eight units of study emotion management are we are the trainers training the staff how to deal with students and and teach them how to cope with their emotions is that what you're doing is it effective yeah part of the lessons um that deal with emotion management are things like um you know how to calm down how to different strategies you can use when you're feeling upset um you know taking deep breaths uh talking using positive self-talk uh taking a break different things that they can do instead of you know to identify how they're feeling and then react appropriately to that and we find

063that it is we've been using it at roseville for several years now and we definitely see the the benefits especially when every grade level when it's universal because not only do the students learn the skills the staff learns the language which helps in all areas not only in the classroom but the cafeteria the hallways um so it is very helpful specifically is anger the number one emotion that we're dealing with or is there other equally difficult ones um i would say anger uh nervousness anxiety um uh frustration yeah frustration tolerance yeah anything else common language when you're dealing with each other here's strategies and there's a way to talk about it and it allows people to have that common language and this god says as a child goes through grade levels they would then have

064that common language between classes that allow them to be able to talk about what's going on and allow adults to talk about that more about what's going on it's also helping kids understand that like you different situations make people feel different like going on a roller coaster might be really exciting for one child and very scary for another and just understanding those those different perspectives and identifying those emotions anything else yeah i'd like to thank everybody thank you appreciate everybody showing up and supporting everybody who was out of bracket um where were you on the right next it's a good time to head to the doorstep in class let's thank you oh okay um so we wanted to present the draft for the development calendar you know october um we will adopt it at the

065next meeting hopefully you can do that i think you should have it attached in your uh packet one thing that we wanted to [Music] address this year is um the public presentations as we go through the budget development um maybe having some of the with the board and we can do some deeper dives in the backup documentation um so as you look through it we will do those focused discussions on you know changes in transportation on m special education people services those are highlight areas that we know are important to the board to the community so we want to make sure that we hit those at a little bit of a deeper level and then as we go through we'll have a special budget meeting for instructions where we stand with all of that so

066um the budget development calendar is here if you have any questions i don't want to belabor it so um it's not significantly different than in the past but i do want to hit a little bit more of a higher level overview of changes rather than going line by line every meeting and questions um does anyone have any questions about them just one question that and maybe dr perry the supply chain issues on the cafeteria and have they found alternatives and are there like shared services out there to use trying to procure some of these things they are continuing to look for additional vendors so example like fresh pizza shells is an option as opposed to the entire pizza being delivered so we're making some things in-house and things are frozen rather than the thresh it

067really depends upon the availability of a product in the delivery aspect we've been pretty fortunate the majority of our deliveries have been uh close to full but our neighboring districts are seeing impacts thursdays or when our deliveries are seems to be a good day but uh it is something we are adjusting our our menus to uh plan ahead uh government commodities for example um cheese for for instance is something that we would plan to get for a couple months is delayed by at least three months is what annette has told me so we have cheese and house and things that are in freezers and things like that but that is certainly something that down the road may adjust a menu item because of an availability of some of those that are hard to get any

068other questions all right policy 9290 supplemental compensation rates we go over the changes quickly yes the change for this policy was related to the covet coordinator stipend uh i believe it's on the second page of the document we have our nurses uh our athletic trainer and mr robloti spending a lot of additional time uh facilitating the testing for staff and in future the testing for students this is additional responsibilities above beyond their normal routines so we've suggested a stipend for this school year and this is reflected in the compensation rates we would present the individuals for approval at the next board meeting in the board and opportunity to review the policy tonight any questions comments all right as the committee chair i recommend that the provisions made to policy 9290 be approved as presented all

069in favor opposed report some recommendations for action it's a through l pages four through nine may i have a motion mr q and a second and um dr perry could you just speak to f because they don't get confused yes these are uh what they call flow-through funds we have the local education agency on page five and continues on through page eight so as an lea the federal government has a responsibility to provide the local education agency monies to then disperse to individual programs this is uh federal monies that are destined towards special needs providers uh there's a series of providers here essentially it's money and money out we are the conduit for the federal government to be able to do that as the lea that's pretty standard so this is a an agreement with

070each of these entities who may provide services throughout the course of the year at agreed upon rates and majority of these agreements they are the set rates by the government based upon the section and the age of the individual child so we basically are getting the money from the federal government and then disperse it based on the enrollment at each of these facilities um thank you to forest parks pca for their donation um but dr perry could you speak to numbers two through seven yes um so often times uh you have a cooperative this happens to be for a volleyball tournament and again the officials who run the volleyball tournaments want to be paid by one entity as opposed to eight different school districts sending partial checks uh so we again collect the monies they're

071considered a donation because the district sends it to us as a donation form but essentially it's an entry fee to pay the officials so you see each of these districts here are paying the uh official fees based on the number of names that they're going to be established in the rates for those officials to get money and money out to uh combined for this case uh a boy's volleyball tournament thank you any questions okay on the motion made by mr king second buddies kogan all in favor posting history and just a note on retirement i know it's it's not right now but yeah i think for some staff it takes a long time in the final year to make a decision on whether or not it's going to be their final year and it comes

072right up the last minute at times and i think for sue uh it didn't take that long she realized that this was going to be her last year and she's certainly going to be missed she's such a friendly face kids really do enjoy her as a she's that teacher but she coached for many years in this district up until now so sue is going to be missed uh dearly by the faculty and the staff and the students at the high school so we'll enjoy our time with her until the end of the year but she made her decision for a while yeah yeah thank you any other questions have emotion [Music] any questions and the motion maybe i need 26 seconds by mr female in favor zero next we have a resolution um sure this

073is a resolution we've been working to do our due diligence for the properties that we're considering purchasing off broderick street we have continued to work with the via king trust specifically christine bakin who owns the property this is an extension of our opportunity to purchase uh the property gives us to the end of june we are continuing to do some topographical as well as archaeological research on the property and it basically allows us to extend the agreement on the current term so they've been very willing to work with us but it's also been a good opportunity for us to determine whether or not the property is appropriate for the use that we're looking for in the future any questions okay it's a roll call though so brian casey yes stephanie colgan yes rose giggliello yes

074colleen gizzy yes michael keane yes david kiel yes christopher larabee yes robert music yes james t ryan yes all right low passes nine to zero okay 15 is the resolution authorizing the execution of the easement for the benefit of the mayor the longhorn power company and i have a motion thank you and seconds later this is uh and he's been related to the electrical transformer work at leicester we've already gone through that process and what we uh are looking to do there so approximately a 200 000 project that i believe right now it's a little under 300 000 there was an ad alternate that we may consider but the work has been uh approved and uh assigned to being uh electrical uh this is an easement for uh naga mohawk to be able to come

075in and run the power lines from the roadway to our school any questions okay brian casey yes and stephanie cogan yes repeat liello yes colleen yes michael keane yes david kiel yes christopher larabee yes robert mesa yes james t ryan yes little passes nine to zero okay um our resolution mr ryan mr nathan and um while you're asking students yeah this one goes back to the 1900s uh dr archer c parker the seneca indian who was also the director of museum of arts and sciences in rochester he actually gets the boy scouts america first to set aside a day for first americans between 1915 and 1919 a lot of different celebrations if we jump way ahead we get with george h.w bush joint resolution doesn't mean november as national american hindu inheritance and since then

076we've had same proclamations declaring it uh going forward uh in the schools you'll have it being promoted you know you have some more in grade four as they get into some of the native american things along those lines uh and also in seventh grade thank you any questions a lotion made by mr ryan second by mr music all in favor opposed each thing here is time to zero please look at future meetings and see if there's anything else questions about and just no we only have one going into december [Music] any questions or concerns about that okay so may you have a motion to enter executive session thank you and this is busiest on youtube um
