005successful um and high key on a successful season and on to winning a Island right? No mistakes. So, awesome. That brings us on to our program presentation. So, Dr. Morrell, would you like to introduce our program presentation? >> Thank you. Mr. President, yes, at this time I would like to present to you Yian Gredisa. Don, sorry. Don Gredisa. Thank you for his um international um Tanzania medical mission um that he will be undertaking this summer. Thank you. Yian >> Thank you so much, Dr. Morrell. So, my name is Yian Gredisa. I am currently a junior here at the high school and um I would like to thank all of you guys for being here tonight and giving me this awesome opportunity to speak to the board. Uh thank you, Dr. Morrell, all of you guys,
006and Mattea and Noah for all of the work that you guys have done this year. Uh it's actually fantastic and I admire it. And so, I'm here today to provide some highlights about uh upcoming Tanzania surgical mission trip, which I'll be partaking alongside my father and the organization Operation International. So, in the future I plan to pursue medicine just like both of my parents have, and that's what I'm striving to do uh in college and in my future. So, I've been fortunate enough uh fortunate enough this year to be invited on this medical mission, which will commence in July. And uh these trips don't happen very often, so I got very lucky for it to be in my junior year over the summer. Uh and I'm going to be traveling once again with the Operation
007International group, uh which is a non-profit organization which deals with these uh medical missions and providing support and uh relief to underprivileged countries such as Tanzania. So, uh primary goal of uh this organization is also to train uh the doctors at these uh specific locations where uh they may not have the proper training like we do here in the United States in order to provide adequate medical care. Uh so, Operation International also groups these doctors together and provides access to better training and uh overall better medical medical care than they would if they were on their own. Uh so, we're going to be doing the same thing in Tanzania. And uh this So, a couple more things about this mission. So, this mission we're scheduled to uh we were originally supposed to be there for
00810 days and now we actually got moved to 13 days overall. So, we're going to be leaving on July 16th uh of this year and our team this year consists of two general surgeons and two head and neck surgeons, which are actually local here from Long Island. And one of these general surgeons and also the head general surgeon on this trip uh is going to be my dad, Les Langer Viso. So, I'm going to be there alongside him. And we're also obviously going to have to have anesthesiologists, uh scrub techs, and nurses in order to assist and facilitate the surgeries which we're going to be taking part. Um So, uh where is this actually going to take place? So, Tanzania is on the East Coast of Africa, just south of Kenya. And uh our work
009is going to be done in the west side of Tanzania in a village called uh Ten Ten Ten Danica. I think that's how you say uh and they're they have a very uh There's a slightly densely populated area over there in which one hospital exists, but once again, this hospital is a third world hospital and they do not have uh the proper training there to help all the people that need it. And as a result, in this area of Tanzania, a lot of people get sick and don't get the proper medical care and unfortunately pass away from a lot of the diseases that they They there locally. Um so, another uh point of our mission is to go and provide relief to these people. So, we additionally have a local from the health ministry of
010Tanzania, which is going to be helping us out and facilitating our travel as well as guiding us to these hospitals, translating, and ultimately assisting the mission in a foreign area. And once once we're there, we're doing it's going to take a day to travel there and a day to travel back at least. It's a long flight. We have three different connections including private planes to get across the country. So, we will be returning back here to the United States on July 27th. Um meaning a 13-day total trip. So, my role in this entire trip is to provide support to the surgeons and medical personnel wherever they may need it and whatever ways I'm qualified to do as a high schooler. And this may include bringing supplies to the OR, assisting with um assisting with providing
011these supplies to the surgeons, registering patients when we're actually at the hospital to keep track and to help uh keep track of all these patients as there's going to be a lot of them and we're sure of that. Uh so, additionally offering my support wherever needed. Once again, I am new to this and this is going to be my first time going to Tanzania or on any sort of surgical mission. So, I'm going to go with the flow and see wherever they need me. I'm going to be there to help. Uh and what's awesome about this trip, I believe, is that um I'm going to be able to get this first-hand experience along with other people. So, not only will Operation International help to provide the relief to these people and train the personnel there,
012but thankfully they also allow me to get first-hand medical insight and first-hand medical experience, which is something that is going to be very valuable to me in the future. Um so concerning this uh mission, we've had uh I've taken the uh responsibility uh of creating a fundraiser uh in order to collect money for this uh medical mission. And for the last 2 months, I've been tracking and monitoring my GoFundMe page, which I set up in March when we found out about the mission, in order to collect money for all the provisions, medical supplies, and for the surgical trip in general uh that we're going to need. Um so I'm not familiar with any other fundraisers that have been going on, but I know that Operation International is a hub for organizing these fundraisers as well,
013and I'm sure that they're going to be collecting uh the funds needed as well, but here locally, I had the opportunity to create this GoFundMe link. Um so uh a big thing uh that I wanted to ask for was the permission to hang these posters up, which are uh put up on the board, um around uh around our buildings here in Southampton in order to get uh small donations because any any any donation helps. So uh as of now, we've raised $2,500, and we have a current goal of $5,000 on the GoFundMe, um which will definitely help more people to come and to get more adequate supplies to provide the care when we are over there. And um once again, I'm very very excited to take part in this mission, and uh it's been a
014duty of mine for the last couple years to serve communities. I've done several trips to Turks and Caicos, uh promoted fish conservation there, um developing my passion for fishing into conservation and and ultimately protection of the environment there, but I would also love to bring some of that here to our community, and uh that's why I'm applying for the ex-officio student board next year. And I would really love your guys's help. Thank you so much. I would really appreciate your guys's support in facilitating this trip with these fundraisers. So, thank you so much for all your time. And thank you so much. >> Does anybody have any questions for him? >> Do I have a quick question? The money, the $5,000 that your goal is, you're going to be buying supplies and transporting them. Are
015you Are you bringing everything with you guys, or does the organization help support you that way? >> Yeah, so the money that I'm raising, it's going to be directly cashed out to to me and my family, which which we're going to then transfer over to Operation International. My dad has bought some supplies because he is a surgeon, and the the corporation's asking to buy some supplies. But also, the money that we're going to be then collecting right now, that's going to be given to Operation International to get whatever supplies they need. And they're going to set up the transport to bring all of that with them to Tanzania. >> Thank you. Very you know, you're doing a great job, and keep up the good work. Can't wait to hear all about it. >> Thank you
016so much. >> Great job. Good luck with it. Your link, I clicked on it, and it says you raised 2,600 off 3,500. >> Yeah, so with the GoFundMe, it's a um the the goal which it displays, it changes as a result of how much is raised. Um that's just a built-in feature on there. So, when when when I had $100 raised, it said the goal was 1,500, and then >> Got you. >> I'm just going to raise it to 5,000. >> Yes. All right, so okay, got you. >> Thank you for that clarification. Does anyone have questions? >> Um I just wanted to say how cool it is that you're taking part in this. It's so awesome that you're going to Tanzania. Really cool. Great job. >> Thanks. Thanks so much for that. >> Great
017job, Yasha. Um how many people are coming with you on this mission? >> So I'm not sure of the exact number. I know that there is going to be four total surgeons coming including my dad. So two general and two head and neck surgeons which are going to be our main focuses of this trip and those are uh main um areas where the people there need help. Uh this includes anything from tumors to breaks and all that. Uh so that's why Operation International deems the most important surgeons to bring. Uh but including all the nurses and the scrub techs and volunteers that are going to be coming with us, I would say it's it's definitely a couple dozen. It'll It'll probably be between be between 10 and 30 people if I had to give a
018range. >> And are you setting up at the existing facility there in that in that town in western Tanzania or are you setting up your own clinic? >> Uh so there is a hospital that exists there and we're currently trying to find out like the specifics and the specs on that hospital as to find out where we can set up and how we can transform it into our medical facility over there. Uh but it's going to be more of a on the spot thing when we get there to see what's available and um make use of what we have. >> Best of luck. >> Thank you. >> Do you know like how many people are anticipated to to show up that that you might be helping over these 14 days? >> So that's a good
019question. Uh it's a densely populated town over there. It's one of the denser populated towns in the west coast of Tanzania uh right on the lake there and I would say that it's going to be a good amount of people. I'm I apologize for not being able to give a range on that, but >> you to know that in advance, but I was just curious. I mean, it's such a such a gift to be able to go over there and help people. So, thank you for volunteering, you and your family, your father, the real surgeons in South America. >> Thank you very much. >> Yeah, man. I think this is great. So, um I'm very familiar with your father. I'm friends with your older siblings, um Alex and Darius and so I I got some
020stories about me and Alex, but I'm not going to I'm not going to share them here right now from uh way back when. Um but I think it's great. So, I'm going to I'm going to be donating. I pulled it up. I'm going to give you some money here on that and uh we appreciate everything and tell you that uh uh Zack says hi and um he can come pick us up one night a few nights. So, um yeah, so I appreciate it and stuff um and I think it's great. We maybe share this through Parent Square with some people and stuff or anything part of the superintendent. You know, some stuff for the buildings and we can put the flyers up and hopefully raise some money and stuff. >> Thank you so much. >>
021I just want to say I think this is a very noble endeavor that you're undertaking at such a young age and I'm just so proud of you and wish you all the best in Tanzania. >> Thanks so much, Dr. Mark. >> I just I just want to say I'm really really proud of you. I I know throughout the school year we have a lot of opportunities to talk and uh I know this is your dream and your passion and it's what you want to pursue. For my part, I'm definitely going to donate to support this thing. >> Thank you. >> We couldn't do that without you guys. Thank you so much. Thank you and thank you for coming in. If there are no further questions, thank you. SO, AWESOME. DR. MORRELL AND UH WE CAN
022CERTAINLY JUST ALSO wanted to a out to Little who is his counselor here in the back of the room who has been supporting him on every step of the way in this really in this mission in the college application process and certainly was here with him tonight. So, thank you, Mr. Little. >> Awesome, great. So, at this time, um we move on to public comment here. So, the Board of Education encourages public participation in school-related matters at board meetings. Any group or organization wishing to address the board must identify a single spokesperson. The presentation should be as brief as possible. No speaker should be permitted to speak for longer than 3 minutes. The board will not permit in public um session discussions involving individual district personnel or students. All speakers are to conduct themselves civilly.
023Um obscene language, libelous statements, threats of violence, statements advocating racial, religious, or other forms of prejudice will not be tolerated. Persons making presentations to board meetings will address remarks to the president and um I mean direct questions to board members and other officials at all times. I don't think we have any requests for public comment. So, um we're going to go on to action items here. Are there any action items from 8.01 through 8.04 that any member wishes to discuss or has questions about? Um are there any action items from 8.01 through 8.04 that any member wishes to hold up for separate action? Um may I have a motion to approve action items 8.01 through 8.04 as presented in the agenda? Or um do I have a second? Uh will the clerk please call the
024roll for a vote? >> Dorothy Shackelford >> Yes. >> Rodney C. Pearson >> Yes. >> Monique Slaughter >> Yes. >> Tamisha Williams-Dudley >> Yes. >> Tamina Smith >> Yes. >> Laura White >> Yes. >> And Ruthie White-Dunham >> Yes. >> Awesome. Um so, at this time we're going to motion um to recess the meeting at um 7:00 p.m. so we can attend the announcements of the um 2026 annual budget budget vote and election and then we will reconvene this work session after we find out the results and um approve them. So, may I have a motion to recess the meeting at 7:00 p.m. to attend the announcement of the 2026 annual budget vote and board election education election results? >> Motion. >> Second by Ruth. Any opposed? So, so carried. This meeting is recessed at
0257:00 p.m.
