001to call up Mr Diaz [Applause] good yeah president Sherwood doubly superintendent Dino board members teachers faculty members parents students especially students congratulations that's awesome we would love to hold you guys up in a high place and that's where you guys belong on top it's awesome congratulations [Applause] so for this summer um like Dr Dino said I had a really short program uh because I had a kitchen job that I committed to it was a pretty big job so I couldn't I couldn't let it go I had to do it but I didn't want to my students were dependent on me for for the summer to come and work and I didn't want to let them down either so we did a short but sweet uh little project and it was great so for the summer
002carpentry crew this year I had uh Samantha grat Megan Longnecker and Henry Swan with me um these students uh we we did a concept to design to completion that was that was the whole model for this year um and we we had a con that we had a concept and we designed something and then we completed it and it really took us um two whole weeks I mean even the last few days we were like overtime two weeks to get it done but it worked out great so let's see this anywhere all right next slide okay so one standard I wrote my business I had a business for like 12 years and one standard that I always lived by was whatever you do work at it with all your heart um this this beautiful quote
003comes from scripture Colossians 323 and it really talks about doing your work like if you're doing it for God right and for me that's a really high standard it's a standard of almost profession right but I always tell my students when we strive for profession we at times fall short of this high standard because most things aren't perfect but when we realize that Perfection isn't a matter of skill or ability but a matter of the heart being in the right place then the standard of profession is reached so it's really where your heart is right when you're doing something when you're building something when you're creating something if your heart is not in the right place your work is probably going to come out really bad and we consider that a hack all right but
004if your heart is in the right place and you do what you're supposed to do then everything's gonna come out perfect because it's the best standard of yourself all right so for this year uh the fabrication part of it we had students they they ripped everything down using table saws they use routers to Rabbit all the shelves in uh the shelves weren't screwed in they were actually rabbit it in all so they fit in perfect and they were all rabbited in um this is some more pictures of them I'm gonna really like I like the pictures because the pictures really say a thousand words right so we had students just working uh we did I did have a blueprint and I I threw it away I'm so sorry I should have done that but we
005did have a blueprint of what it was going to look like I wish I could have showed you but like we had it yet but uh here we just had students again just fabricated all the pieces using all the tools using all their skills that they learned a lot of these students are in my BOCES program except for one of them which is uh uh Megan Megan took my two-year program so she's very she their their abilities in the tools is really good they have really good ability with the tools and they can use all the tools in the shop all right so this is then just working together assembling uh the bookshelf by the way that was a project I've said that to you guys yeah but that was the problem but I think
006you guys all know what the project was uh so here we promote a lot of teamwork all right that's what it's all about it's teamwork there's a huge difference in students when they're getting paid to do something than when they're in the class and not getting paid to do something even though I remind my students that when you do a job for me in the class you are getting paid by a grade I'm paying you with a grade right is it going to be 100 or 0 or 50 whatever it is so I I still try to give them that concept but when when the students come into work they come into work they came into work seven o'clock they work till about 12 30 every day and they worked right through no lunch no
007complaining no no they just work worked and it was really great it was really great watching them work uh this is where uh of the three shelves uh the bookshelves were completed and they were all filled and this is them stained and I don't know if anybody's ever stained before but oil State and it's not a lot of fun especially in the summer humid air it's it's terrible it's really terrible but we had great ventilation and the students did a great job and they never complained once and it just worked worked here is one of the bookshelves on the left oh I put that picture again but here's one of the bookshelves completed stained and painted all right that's the ones uh so we had three sections we had a left section middle section right
008section and the middle section you'll see it in the picture is a little bigger and I'm looking a little wider than the other two sections which gives it like a protruding look you'll see it here uh this is installation day so what we did is we built all the pieces in my wood shop uh we stained everything and we completed everything we put everything together then we took it apart put it in the work truck and we brought it down to the elementary school so this is at the elementary school and this is the student's uh installing uh the bookshelves as you can see we took some of the drop ceilings off just to find all the studs to make sure that everything was secured um in the middle picture there we have this there's
009the little plant that we had a little blueprint the students looking at the blueprints just looking at what has to go together with all the pieces all the crown molding that we installed was cut on site which the students were doing right there in the middle um there was also some other touch-ups that we did while we were there and that's the finished product that's that's the finished product Elementary School um before we did any of this I did meet with Jamie and Dr Fernandez and um we we just came up with a plan of what they wanted and what they would look for I wasn't able to bring the students with me to that because it was right after school and they all had to schedule an issues just like today they could accomplish
010our schedule issues and they were working um and there it is again so you can see the detail so one thing that I try to tell my students is always pay attention to details right money is in the detail it's like when you pop right you can you you can really drive for sure but you're pumping for gold right that's how I go right so if if if you're gonna if you have great detail your details here that's where the money's at right so that's what that's what's important to me um and again this is us having fun all right because it's not always about work right we have to talk especially in Minecraft right this was during one of the great part of our faculty barbecue uh uh probably what they know he thinks
011he's gonna get away but his great grilling his great cheeseburgers and hot dogs I don't know about design he might have salt in mind yeah I'll cook off I love that I love that so the students the students buy an old so I had a dumpster I have two dumpsters by my classroom and the students find all these amazing artifacts and all these things so they found this little tricycle and of course kids will be kids you know they're they're teenagers and we're trying to attention to be adults but in their mind they're still little kids and they want to have fun so I allow them to have some fun so that was basically my whole program this summer I really want to thank Dr Dino for supporting this and thanks to the board for
012agreeing to this and that design what will we do without you yeah thank you so much for everything you guys are amazing thank you so much for all your help and thank you so much for everything you do for our student body [Applause] thank you then they will tell you I'm still getting compliments I wouldn't go through the course of building and see the shop temperature are complimenting us on they think that if somebody purchased for thousands of thousands of dollars so thank you so much just to say one thing that was one one conversation out with my students how much this would cost that's a conversation that we had and they saw the value behind what they were doing in such a short time so they said if I can make some money at
013this I guess you can great thank you the next presentation I'd like to bring up is I eventually did earlier on and it's something that has been in District I don't know for how many years but it's our star program and I'm going to invite you to shoot me Judy and Sherry up to the stage up to the podium to talk about this starts real quick okay thank you first of all who's saying happy birthday to Addison right you know and that's really important for me all right because she knew that was her sixth birthday and the next piece that's really so important to me is that when I'm seeing all these young people come up to Awards they were once the children so we have to look at the overlap they will watch children
014and start a program and we also know that was very interesting we've had three of those children tomorrow program come over and do incredible work with using those skills in the afternoon program to start from 12 months so there's a lot going on really excited again happy to be here we also gave me the name when I did the bus tour the Elder stage so I'll take that one okay uh Miss Sherry come on up we've been on this mission for a long time okay and I think that um homework I know you guys get afraid a little homework it's not homework but we decided we needed to be we need to get it before and like disability said pictures speak a thousand words and we'll give you a thousand words at the end cherry
015and I we launched this Mission many years ago and she's been on this on board this thing with me and us for a long time so if you haven't from you I would say the first thing I do want to read is this the mission statement Southampton School District mission statement in partnership with our diverse Community will educate students in a safe supportive environment and the question with knowledge values and skills to become responsible citizens the dynamic Global Society launched in 1989 the star program has made their three trips around the Beloved Community of Southampton our mission of teaching social emotional learning diversity equity and inclusion social thinking and reasoning remains strong and consistent with the goals and mission of the Southampton School District when we begin our mission 33 years ago we had a
016vision will visit a safe space where every man woman and child the flourish and strive to be the best human being that could possibly be henceforth the star program was born an audition of the school a community a world being socially literate is alive and well thanks to the incredible artwork of dedicated lead teachers grade level coordinators lead counselors college students Wellness coordinators high school counselors pal nachos helpers and uh assistance is School staff and administration and most importantly the children we serve it needs to say we of course have one of the most incredible lead teachers who work to start and went out there we wouldn't know where to go appreciate it [Applause] let's describe the highlights the constellations of the hard work that was done in the summer during our star program youth
017employment we employ and empowers 25 high school students as counselors we taught students how to navigate the employment process filling out applications getting fingerprinted getting working parts finding and filling out important documents such as birth certificate social security cards making sacrifices in order to make money setting goals developing a work ethic and understanding the fair exterior is a strong recommendation we continue to immerse our high school counselors in our peers assistant leadership natural helpers skills training so that they could assist and be lead counselors and Lead teachers with planned activities such as social emotional learning mindfulness listening leadership attention to tasks student engagement and constructive use of Leisure Time all of which led to our youth becoming stronger and more confident especially in controlling one's life and claiming one's rights college student employment we employed
01818 college students that means these are kids who are either in school right now in college what once high school counselors were once participants in the program now in college we employ we we employed and empowered 18 college students as lead counselors most of our college student lead counselors of Southampton high school graduates who started as early participants in the small program became high school student employees are now attending college because because most are aspiring to be teachers we afford to make great on the job training experience working closely with our magnificent lead teachers such as Mrs wheeler who served as qualified mentors to our college students they were immersed in learning how to leave to teach to coach and how to embrace the community and build community they learn how to be role models
019and caretakers for younger children but apart for example of incredibly teachers are College counselors were taught that the privilege to serve is the highest honor they will ever achieve the service is truly the rent they will pay for living and not something they do in their spare time is Our Hope and star that someday one day today these bright and wonderful college students will return to Southampton to work on our schools and community and Shine On um lean teacher employment we employed and empowered eight of the most beautiful human beings as our lead teachers who showed up every day and was living proof that great teachers don't teach for the income they teach for the outcome creating and developing curriculum for social emotional Learning Community Building leadership and social literacy always teaching us that leading
020the way also requires a great sense of humor and humor is truly corroborated Holiness and a sign of intelligence star leads to Stars lead teachers taught our high school counselors and College counselors to understand that education is not just about the transfer of knowledge it is about students applying what they've learned in school and how that connects to the real world most importantly star children big stars Little Stars we empowered 150 children with star power social thinking and reasoning skills making learning funds which we call edutainment entertainment simply means that that means educational but very entertaining because we know children will invest we immerse all of the children in Social literacy activities that were forcibly planned by the lead teachers and help implemented by high school and college counselors at the end of the day
021what was most important is seeing and knowing that we had made each child feel like the best human being they could be they can be today and always the collaboration with Southampton Parks and Recreation Department we provided 150 children 41 staff members with each day every Friday at Long Beach in Sag Harbor we see many compliments on how well behaved our children were and how clean we left the beach I truly believe that with the reconcile from our teachers and counselors modeling social skills matters whatever [Laughter] Museum which is Winfield's party kids and staff were able to discover and experience that art has the power to move individuals to social action manipulating influence and pain and educated it was amazing the children and staff to experience art literacy that was taught by the two amazing
022art teachers from the parasite Museum the art not only informed our children's construction of meaning but also expanded their understanding of the world did you understand from the FTA Southampton Teachers Association and of course the financial support from our school district we purchased food for cooking classes and provided cooking every Thursday for all the staff administrators and children of all the summer programs in the district the cookout was a beautiful and Powerful intergenerational way of telling teachers telling of telling teaching and showing the children how to appreciate and be thankful for all the little things though our custodians and secretaries and administrators and security to do with great love to make Star rewarding experience sorry I can't see you without the right so I try to see you I can heal you um we live
023in one world and then before I finish um this last paragraph I really would like to say to each and every one of you last year's um experience as a community that I'm grateful for your work because I can't imagine being in your position during that time I'm extremely grateful for the superintendent's work because I've watched you in board meetings over and over discussing the issues that were impacting all of our lives we were human roles titles everything was gone and you did an amazing job in moving us forward and I don't know that anyone has said that to any of you and I'm really proud of our district I'm proud of each of our board members that constantly so went to the meetings and publicly gave inspiration and kept moving so I wanted to
024say that to you tonight because we really are one world the language that was born from that is still being born as you guys watch the rfps roll down from the state you know they're talking about social emotional learning you're talking about um ddei diversity education and Equity I mean diversity yes yes and includes exclusivity and all that all those programs that roll down the line um we work at but we are human beings and we live in one world and this is a very tentative world but we still find a way to inspire our families and Inspire the children of Southampton in a world of filters thanks to Joanne [Music] I'm sorry [Music] in a world of filters we always have to remember that our children don't have to wear those filters every parent
025every school board member we want the same for all of our children we want our children to be given every opportunity to succeed every opening to learn every opportunity to grow and I know that that's the commitment that each of you has committed to so in that I'll call about under the engineering right now one world from the first day of star to the last we would first Gather in our community groups read our star Constitution to remind everyone that in their tongue must be the law of kindness take time on park bench for comfort and caring and finding a voice and then proceeding to move into family groups we truly built a beautiful diverse community in which lessons were taught and learned every day that differentiation is the solution not the problem and not
026the problem and every man woman and child could feel safe secure and loved but only to be kind we built one world [Music] don't subscribe [Music] inside this time [Music] because [Music] [Applause] well the truth is going to be a chance [Music] oh yeah every month [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] one better [Music] sacrifices [Music] anywhere [Music] wow [Applause] [Music] standing in tonight [Music] wow yeah so we'll let that keep going for a little bit uh first of all um was uh this is Rita's cooking classes I don't know if you all know that she's such a great hook but it was really neat because it's also unlocked for kids to make your own snacks every day and when she first originated the program she was teaching designs okay I never knew why the
027red didn't rise and all that but she leaves for the understood [Music] sessions if you have questions you should ask questions also the cookouts will not like take place without um the custodian's love for our kids at the high school because they literally do those cookouts for us [Applause] to bring everything single person in the school district they'll also make sure to protective that we never used any of the school district's money to do that we all use the small spots to feed the spiritual restore program Gene as it was budgeted I would go over to the district office cheeseburger but it was really important that in my emphasize and it was amazing and again Charlie and I can't say enough I've never seen anyone around the world that long sharing and talking so many
028people Marcus was amazing he said he was so grateful for everything that's taking place was he saw not just food apart of some of these employees that did not see it before okay and uh it was all just about the fact that we're just trying to say one world can get together now I'm not gonna cut no grass but you know um I also apologize my littles are all missing from the slideshow but we had a huge group of Littles in K through four I don't know what happened maybe they didn't make it [Applause] [Music] I don't need to put you on the spot so we did have our summer work crew this summer um this was the second year that we actually had this program and we actually hired a few students to actually
029work in different departments so we did have a um secretarial assistant who worked for us this was her second year and she basically went to the different buildings um working in the office helping out with different tests that they had given her um we also did hire someone for security unfortunately it just didn't work out with the schedule but um the school district did offer that opportunity um and we also had two gentlemen that actually worked as custodial assistants um and it was their second year um they both participated last summer came back this summer really wanted to work last summer they worked with police at the elementary school and this summer we have been working with Andre um in the middle school and again just a really amazing experience Andre was amazing because he
030actually sat down when I would sit down with them to kind of talk about how it was going and just talk about things that maybe we needed to work on and also commend them on the things that they were doing well Andre sat down with me he actually spoke to them and really kind of made it a mentoring experience um which he more than willing to again to continue to do throughout the year um so something that I'll probably be coming back to the board about on how we could make that happen um but again another great program another opportunity for our students I think the most important thing is just getting the information out there early um you know the one thing we have to realize about our students here in the summer they
031start securing their jobs early so by the time we get the information out a lot of them already have their jobs but the local belief in this year was really be able to reach out much earlier so that we can have a few extra students in some time thank you great thank you Mrs Jeffries and as you can see so our first several programs outside of the summer you know summer school our summer programs really run the gamut of trying to reach every student we have this thing this year the sense of belonging that we want to make sure every student feels like they belong in the classroom to do it that they generalize it to the school Community then the Greater Community and I think as you heard tonight your Mr Diaz's program of
032course the star program through Miss Jeffries and Mrs Smith our students did have that sense that they belonged to this small community and to transfer those skills to a greater community um we also are making a concerted effort to try to reach our students who might not be college-bound now some of our students may not be in the special education program where they get some transition work but they might be students who are having difficulty identifying what their strengths are and how to obtain employment during this you know while your students go beyond so we think this summer crew program will definitely help our students um gain some of those summer skills to gain the confidence they need to then go out for an interview and work beyond the school district so we're grateful to
033this as Jeffries and her commitment of both identifying the students finding their interests and then convincing our departments within the district to allow students to work with them and it's been really successful it's a great start but I think we need to continue going on and have more and more students involved because I think this is going to be their their children are going to come here some days we want to make sure they're proud of the environment that they're building up so again I want to thank all the all the people who provided our summer programs and all the students who are involved and all the parents who let their students be involved in it because I think it's exactly what we need to do to make sure the community knows our school is
034not just about preparing kids for college it's a much bigger place than that so I'd like to thank everyone any questions on any of the summer programs before we go to defense okay audience you're welcome to stay you don't have to but you're welcome to say the fun stuff's gone but before you keep going what you want to talk wow you're killing me right um the one thing I do want to talk about is the Forum that we're having that might interest some of you um and to the board I sent you a copy of a letter that I sent out to the our employees this week we just had to translate it to Spanish and we'll be sending it out to all our parents we'll be sending it to the Press we'll be sent
035putting it on our website and we'll be doing emails to our students and parents the purpose of this forum is to identify different ways that we as the district can connect with community thank you foreign I'd like to talk a little bit about the um some of the plans that I hope to generate interest in with while holding the scores so the plans I'd like to talk about are number one reinstating a Viper adult education program that provides instruction and training for adult members in various areas of interest during the evening I had told that several years ago we had a really rich adult education program I think it's time for us to bring that back and I'd love to be part of bringing that back and I know there are adults interested in both
036teaching and attending that program so that's one of the things we'd like to talk about we'd also like to talk about the explorational Partnerships between local businesses and the schools to make sure we continue to expand trading internships and employment in various areas so both our students and the community will benefit we wanted to talk about coordinating activities and obtaining funding for local Artisans to work with students in creating and displaying art pieces throughout our district buildings and campuses that celebrate culture tradition and local history we want our campus to become a Living Museum of what Southampton is and what it can do um we want to identify necessary community service projects for our students to get involved in that benefit our community's needs we have so much community service going on in our school
037district but clubs throughout the all three schools we want to make sure it's targeted and we're hitting the need that the community really has not just an idea that we think is is something that we think is necessary we want to make sure it comes from the ground up what are the needs our community has and how can our students help the fill those needs we want to try to facilitate job fairs that that's our local employers needs with the skills of our current and former students to help for the vacancies that exist during the summer we know there's a lot of opportunities for summer employment we know our kids want work we have to make sure we can match the two together so that everyone benefits we want to try to connect families with
038younger students so we want to try to create family educational activities for two to four-year-olds who are becoming who will be future Southampton students because we want to initiate a relationship with the school district and activate students to the school environment well before they become students here and finally we want to determine other opportunities and Partnerships for Mutual benefit of students so my hope is to have this large Forum together we'll start the first meeting in November that will continue to develop into subgroups for each of these topics and report back and have a concrete plan to implement by the summer of 2023. um so the letter is going to go on if anyone's interested in being part of this forum they would just have to email our board Clerk and let her know and
039then we'll set this up as I said sometime between November 1st and well before Thanksgiving when we find a date that's convenient for most of the people who want to get involved if you want me if you'd like to get involved please make sure please contact Mrs Pearson if you don't want to get involved but you think you might have a neighbor or someone who's not connected with the schools that won't hear about it that would like to get involved please have them contact Mrs Pearson again this is for the benefit of the whole Southampton Greater Community not just school-aged people so we'd like to get the word out and we want to have an auditorium full of people with interest so thank you any questions sure so my core so um so this is
040Pearson's email is Amy Pearson which is spelled a p-i-e-r-s-o-n at southamptonschools.org and her phone number is 631-591-4510 and again this will go out to all forgiving of families of students in the school district I will put it in the press and it will be on our website so if you can remember either of those numbers or the email address just send people to the website they'll be able to get it for themselves so again thank you for any other questions thank you [Music] has presented it's actually yeah through memorandum agreement between the Teachers Association comments the Board of Education encourages public participation as performance exercise [Music] I can't even see it I'm sorry I'm just an extensions
