you a little bit about themselves so you get to know who's sitting in front of her who's standing in front of our children this year we're going to get to tell who are our firstborns or not in the new teacher group and i'm going to ask whoever would like to go to the podium first and start the process you're welcome to go ahead are you the first board in your family so brian do introduce yourself to the board and tell them what you're going to be doing here and then the other information as well hello everyone hi i'm brian marco this is my first probationary physician and i'm basically teaching fifth grade ela here at the intermediary school for southampton i am the firstborn uh the past 20 years getting up to now i've been

you know actors always have survival jobs so i always worked in a school and then that slowly turned into me doing all of my fun acting exercises as therapy exercises and learned learning all about mental health and i spent the last two years working at hampton bays my greatest accomplishment there i'd say is we started our first ever stop and shop food pantry which was the first one in new york state ever created and i'm very excited to get involved in the southampton community even more and create more partnerships like that thank you chris before you sit down um i also like you can you talk a little bit about you did a very interesting program with bringing students to avery's boxing class can you tell a little bit about that yes if you remember
former student avery crocker he is one of my best friends and i approached him with this idea two years ago about doing a mental health boxing program i would work with specific kids for an hour after school in the group setting we do group therapy together and then we would bring the kids and we'd go to boxing class with avery for an hour and it was really awesome you know we taught our kids you know you're allowed to feel angry and upset but what do you do when you feel that right you can hit the bag you can hit mitts don't hit each other you know we were trying to give our kids a different areas different ways where they can let out some of these not so great emotions and it was a big

committed to doing and so i want to learn about how to help kids in this community the best way possible and hopefully we can all move forward together and you know just grow together so thank you very much um we have one video a person who couldn't make it tonight andrew who's our new business teacher hi my name is andrew payco and i'm a physics teacher at south hampton high school i wish i could be at the board meeting tonight but i had a prior family commitment i grew up on long island i'm from northport new york graduated northwest high school and then went to binghamton university while i've been in university i achieved my bachelor's degree in physics went back and got my masters of arts in teaching physics as well as certifications in
earth science and general science on my free time i enjoy singing scuba diving hiking camping and this past summer i worked with new york state parks to help protect the piping clover population some achievements i've achieved include being an eagle scout a second-degree black belt and obtaining my commercial driver's license while working at nicholson university as a student bus driver people think physics is very hard and often are scared to enroll in course one of my goals as an educator and a lover of physics and science in general is to challenge that perception we use physics every day and don't even realize it whether it be to make the perfect paths in the football game to catch a fly ball in a baseball game or maybe to microwave some leftovers physics is everywhere and i
hope to make physics fun and help explain our world with exciting demos and experiments while challenging the way we might think the world works luckily at southampton we have an incredible science program in such a unique ecosystem and environment southampton is a great community and a great place to have a lot of hands-on learning courses like hatchery management and aquaculture really excited me to want to apply here and especially for me personally the planetarium these are invaluable student resources and coincide well with my philosophy of hands-on learning and experience for students i'm looking forward to a very exciting school year [Applause] i'd like to thank you guys for putting in such a long day and staying here i don't know if the board has any comments before i allow our people to go home for
the evening oh i'm sorry you guys started hiding over there on martha [Applause] right back hi everybody i feel like this is a reintroduction um but and now i'm old news since i've been nine months but this month has been fantastic our um admin retreat was a lot of fun that was great but it's been great to get to know the counselors the last couple of weeks that they've uh you know come back and uh things are moving right along and i just can't wait to meet the students and the families of this community and i like all of these people i'm really excited to be here um it's gonna be a great year so thank you thank you melissa to tell us a little bit about herself hi everyone i just got my props
just now so i'm just going to give a quick overview um i know everyone at this amazing tickle so i actually want to say hi to all the new staff welcome to southampton um i've been here for i believe i think i'm going into my 20th year now i've always been a secondary english teacher and i've taught anywhere between 6th and 12th grade english in this district over the course of the years that i've been here last year i was fortunate enough to be the high school instructional leader and tech trainer and i really really loved it i realized how much i cared about working with the staff administrators and students as well so it definitely was a turning point for me so when the ap position opened i gave it a shot reply and
i activated for the next couple months in the high school for now um i'm very excited to be here and thrilled to be working with some amazing new people high school so welcome tomorrow oh yes i will be here in the morning yes i'll be here in the morning helping you out with all that tech training so have plenty of coffee [Applause] it was a hard day today and they've been working since 8 o'clock this morning never complaining that they got a lot of information thrown at them today they had an hour of tech with julianne they'll have more tech tomorrow with melissa and cam rainer and they really stood tall and really did what we expected them to do and then stuff so thank you guys for being who you are and we're looking
forward to such a great year i think we're going to accomplish all the goals that we have set forward for our schools this year so welcome [Applause] tomorrow and i didn't mean so the next presentation we have tonight is something that um we've been looking forward to and it's um two two plans that we need to present and have to be adopted which is our school comprehensive education plan the skep and the dsip which is the district comprehensive improvement plan you'll also be we recommended to you the final adoption of our revised dei strategic plan so anna um who's the author of all three plans is going to present an overview of the three players all right next time we'll have to get [Music] i will do better next time so what you have in
front of you are just a few documents it's not the plan i didn't want to print out the plan because you do have them online but just some documents that i'll be discussing and the presentation um i did put a little sticky note just to differentiate each presentation so the first one will be the one on our decent plan and our step fund so good evening thank you for allowing me to present so tonight i'll be presenting on the district comprehensive improvement plan which we and then our school comprehensive education plan which is our step plan so just to review i know that i've presented this you've heard it many times but just that everyone's aware so how were south hampton intermediate school in the district initially identified as a target school and a targeted
district so going back to 2017 2018 and then the 1819 school year we were identified for our native american students and also our african american students cited on our ela math and science state assessments at the intermediate school so this then initially caused the southampton intermediate school to become what the holds a target school so what happens when you have in district one target school you'll eventually become a target district so automatically we became a target district and that's why you'll see i'm going to go through two plans that you'll hopefully be approving today um both our step plan and our discipline so just to be able to provide an overview so what is the target district exit criteria for 2022-2023 school year so currently on our accountability status it's actually unknown because new york
state during the summer we're working on what would be the criteria in order to exit a school loud so that has been um set up by the state there was um feedback that districts could provide parents could provide the state and so now we're just waiting for the whole to determine whether or not we are going to continue to become a district and a school that has been cited by new york because of those three areas what we do know is that they will be using the three to eight assessments um for the 21 22 school year those are test scores have been released but currently at this moment they are embargoed so that indicates that we are not allowed to share them publicly but as administrators i would imagine we will be looking at
that data was currently released um so that's why you won't see data tied to this because it's involved we're currently at the moment and so again hopefully in the fall as the state has indicated all districts who are currently on a list based on that data and a whole bunch of other factors it'll be determined whether or not we do continue on that list so last year we um did provide a step in the diesel plant and so what we did during the summer um out of june may actually may or this year the end of last year we assembled a step team of the different constituent groups there were parents teachers um administrators and we also um sat with students and there were focus groups that took place because that's what the factors that
we have to implement in order to establish a skeptic so what we did is we sat around the table with the team of constituents and basically looked at last year's plan we discussed what areas we met and then what areas we still needed to continue to work towards and that's what you have in front of you on the online document is that step plan again i didn't print it out because it's a lot of pages that didn't want to continue to you know just print out so many pages but you do have that for your reference where we added strategies and so just to give you an overview so for the intermediate school step plan the first commitment we identified two commitments so basically this commitment is really just looking at deepening connections continuing that
very uh similar to last year continuing that for our students parents family staff and community making sure that we are providing that experience and a sense of belonging for all that's the first commitment the second commitment is making sure that providing an engaging learning environment last year we only focused on a literacy initiative this year we're going to be focused on reading in the area of mathematics so we'll be looking at those two areas again just for the intermediate school mr colvis i don't know if you wanted to add anything else before i move on to the distribution yeah i just wanted to echo the fact that because of anna's leadership the last two years in the cycle we really are not starting from scratch whereas really building and tweaking improving last year's model last
year's commitments so what i feel good about is the process and that there is continuity there's a sense of building progress towards working with not just these two subgroups but with all of our community and the process itself is worthwhile i mean sitting down with us in the focus groups and working with staples in the community and doing that in a structured way with measurable gaps and or measurable areas for assessment it really is very helpful especially for someone like myself who's learning to really adapt to this community and really work with a great population so i think that the process itself is very worthwhile and his leadership is extremely valuable and i think that it echoes into the decent plane as there's lots of overlapping character that's a good point and i know that
last year there were concerns about this being um a time waster writes an initiative from the state um and one thing i did say let's look at you know the positives of this and what has been brought about when i you know it's really collaboration with the different constituent groups which i don't think that we've ever had on a building level with the intermediate school and also district wide it's actually kind of allowed us to laser focus on certain areas that we might have not been looking at before so i know that you know it's it's lengthy but i think that we're getting better at what we're doing last year was different but now i think like mr kobe said we kind of have um a rhythm to what we're doing it wasn't just off
of um built from scratch we already had something going and with plans that's what you wanted to do you want to be able to assess what went well the year that you implemented the plan and then continue that plan if you need to take things off of the table which we did too things that we accomplished we continue things that are still ongoing which that's what you'll that's what you see in the plan of the strategies that we that we built into the intermediate school great if i could just add to the board we break into the next slide um on many of the agendas over the past year or so you've seen personnel items that were highlighted in blue because they were brand funded you know extra help sessions for students some parent communicators
these were all activities that were approved in our approval plan by the state and they gave us money to facilitate the activities so many of the initiatives in this are state funded through the money attached with the designation and i'll explain and i'll um i do have the numbers for that at the end of the presentation so for the district-wide uh plan like mr clovis indicated um we really again worked off of the plan from last year which is very similar to the intermediate school and the district-wide plan and again um we're focusing on the learning environment you know for our students making sure that we're providing you know a centered approach that's supportive and that it's engaging right district line uh a second piece although there are two priorities three priorities here as opposed
to um the step one we have to commit on the district plan you have to commit to three to five uh priorities so we chose a three and so the second uh priority is to be able to focus on our students um who are at risk for chronic absenteeism to making sure that we're looking at the data right and making sure that we're also providing interventions and supports to make sure that we improve attentiveness so that's the second priority and the third priority again very similar to um the intermediary school plan again just deepening connections just pre-k to 12 amongst all constituent groups we feel that that was important and that's priority when we move forward with such plans so like dr dino had indicated um whether we continue to be cited or not the
state actually has released funding regardless of whatever your status will be which is a good thing uh in order to be able to support these plans both the school plan and the district-wide plan so for the intermediate school there's 75 000 and for the district is 50 000 so we have been sitting together to begin to crunch some of those numbers to be able to build a budget we will continue to our deadline um is august 31st they actually extended it to september 14th so we'll make sure that we get it in before because they know that districts are just doing a lot to set up schools so the state did grant a two week window for all districts across new york state so we will be submitting that uh to the state shortly any
questions on the sip or step plan i do have a question i tried to remember from last year we started what were the numbers of kids that tested and that came up with the central center it was a very low number of students wasn't it that makes it a little out of skew it's all based on the students who sit to take the exam so that's why the number was small but it's based on students who sit for the exam so that was a discussion that was i don't have the numbers in front of me i could definitely right so if there's 40 students native american and black students in the grade but only six took the test because everybody opted out that's not indicative of the rest of right because you don't have sports
however when looking at last year's data our internal data our benchmarks there was a similar our story being told with our benchmarking assessments last year thank you and that was i believe 95 of students mr colbus that did sit for the at that point the data points that we did have yeah so in our our benchmark assessments that we had for winter and spring we had about 95 participation in all subgroup areas so it was a much much more addictive you know cross section of what we were actually seeing there were some some carryovers from the limited numbers of participants in the state data with our in-house benchmark which was much more healthy as far as samples just let me just read of course what you want to say is an important point so when
we knew that students and families were opting out of the state test that's when we developed our own local benchmark so we could get a sense of where students are falling and so with that we have much more reliable data that can really i don't use the word track but really could could tell us the story of how students are growing or not in the areas that we're assessing we monitor progress for all of our students so this is for the first time in several years that we have a complete set of data more complete than we've ever had in the last two three years we've aligned that data so that it speaks the same language and all three buildings so it's not different data assessments that go online so they really carry where nicely
and um like i mentioned earlier we can't share those results yet but i would have if i would have um been allowed to but they're currently involved so my hope is that we will share that at a future thank you maybe i wasn't listening carefully but uh what do we use as the benchmark are we using a design benchmark but what is it you know so we use um in-house themes of data for reading and math three times a year we also use our reading inventory which is a lexile level for a read comprehension level so these three different data points three times out of the year in all k2a students and just one other point just for the lord's sake so when we when anna created this plan based on all the work that
was done by sentence to the the state doesn't accept or reject it what they do is they look at our plan and they give us suggestions to make it strong so they'll come back because of many ways that they think we should tweak it but they won't just say no that's not good they'll help us to get it to where they feel it's strong enough for us to tell our story and that's what we've been waiting for which was interesting because on the state it does say that they approve it so i went back and the thousands of the email that we received so now if there are no further questions on skype or other decent plan um i'll move on to the next one that we have and just a classification i didn't come
up with a plan and there was a constituent a group of constituents who worked really hard and you have those names reflected in the plan and um i just want to highlight that because it's important people took their time parents teachers you know really took their time after school to join sessions two-hour three-hour sessions for multiple days and um it's important that we highlight and you have those numbers those names and the plan it's important to just highlight those individuals who took the time on a volunteer basis so just saying and i stand corrected however i'll just be with you it takes a great facilitator to hear all the collective spots of more than 20 people and put it into a comprehensive document and you did that thanks because i appreciate it so our next
plan is our plan on diversity equity and inclusivity um plan our strategic district-wide plan so just to recap in may of 2021 the new york state board of regents basically we went to red the board expects that all school districts and institutions of higher education will develop and implement policies and practices that advance diversity equity inclusion and they will implement such policies and practices with fidelity and urgency so again the the state right has asked the districts if they would like it's not that i have to if you'd like to focus on diversity equity inclusion right and come up with a policy which we did which i'll share in a little bit right this was what was stated so everything that we're going off of have been going on for the past year since last
june july since i first started june of 2021 with the additional responsibilities has been based on whatever material uh new york state nice it has shared with us with all districts so just to recap so we did create a district ei task force that started to meet in september we had monthly sessions initially in september i believe there were two or three meetings that we met back to back just to get our meetings going basically we were charged with the points that are there so basically what we did was we studied the new york cultural responsive sustaining education framework which you do have a copy in your folder of the framework there are four principles within this framework we did study district-wide data points throughout those sessions we learned and created an understanding of the
eyes through various literature books videos many conversations i'll call them the emotional rollercoaster conversations really great uh conversations that we did have just to have a common understanding of what uh diversity equity inclusivity meant and then we were charged with recommending the di policy to the superintendent in the board of education so we took many sessions during the fall to the winter and sat around the room with about 30 to 40 individuals it varied depending on you know what month it was um to really what we did was look at several um dei sample policies from nisba eastern southern boces the scholarship uh school district of state and obviously we looked at it tweaked it and really formulated to be what was approved or adopted rather on february 8th of 2022 by the board of
education so then after that that was the catalyst to then really come up with a dei strategic plan so after february for those next few months we sat down on monthly sessions with about 30 constituent members and basically formulated a dei uh strategic plan which again i didn't print copies of that plan because you do have it online uh several pages and that's what we're recommending tonight to the superintendent and you know you the board and hopefully to get approved today for the upcoming 2022-23 school year and again we had several just some pictures from some of our meetings so again we had students parents teacher staff administrators and board of education members and really they were you can see in the pictures there were very collaborative meetings a lot of conversations and a lot
of work they were really working meetings so again just in the plan i highlighted the members of 30 plus members who were part of just coming up with this document that the whole world today and then i just want to point out i know that there's a big elephant in the room i'm very big on being transparent and just putting it out there so i know that across the nation we're seeing um where certain members of communities are calling um clinical race hearings they're saying that we're teaching critical race theory let me just say so according i'm just going to read something that i have according to new york state board of regents transferred blessed to go the new york state board of regents policy on diversity equity and inclusion is not an attempt to
in fact teach critical race theory so however with that being said just so that everyone's aware we do not teach theory in a pre-k to 12 institution now that is higher ed so if anyone were understand that is not the case because what we teach rather is what you'll see in those four principles our basis of this whole dei policy is based on cultural responsiveness which is highlighted in that framework that framework that you have in front of you you don't have the entire framework but it's minds and below but yours is it's this there's a lengthy 50-page document i didn't mention anything but this is just for you to see there are four principles attached to it the first one is welcoming and affirming environment which you saw across the discipline you're going to
notice that there are common themes which is really nice how they're organically happening and putting the input together the next principle is high expectations and rigorous instruction the third one is inclusive curriculum and assessment and an ongoing professional development which you'll see um i'm sure you've joined the plan and so basically what we're doing is we're teaching critical thinking skills that's what we want our students in the end game that's what we want our students to be able to accomplish based on these four principles you do have uh this document i know it's teeny tiny here but you do have a copy of colorful copy in your folder of the implementation roadmap i think that this is important to highlight because it gives you an idea of the phases there are three phases according to
new york state that dishes should be taken so you can see so we have phase one two and three so phase one is our starting point for this dei plan it's raising awareness phase two is building capacity and then phase three is full implementation we are nowhere near full implementation right now into space one is really just raising awareness providing professional development on what diversity equity inclusivity is for all that includes all constituent groups and you'll see laid out in the plan just the several strategies that we're taking to accomplish that that's what we're doing this year there are some pieces we might dangle in um in interface two building capacity that's going to happen organically but the majority of the document is the raising awareness so according to the priorities that have been set
up in the in the plan so again here we go with um ensuring our constituent groups are involved to grow positive relationships and create a welcoming environment based on principle number one from the new york state uh crs framework priority two setting up high expectations and provide rigorous instruction with accountability through the implementation of inclusive curriculum instruction and assessments through a culture response within the state of approach that's based on principle two and three and then the third priority is to provide the school community with ongoing meaningful learning so a lot of learning is going to take place right that awareness thing we need to be able to build that awareness stage before right uh building that capacity which would be phase two so those are just the three priorities and what you'll notice is
that you'll notice some overlap even with some of my dimension earlier with our skeptic disciplines and so what are our next steps hopefully if the plan is approved tonight uh next steps would be to reconvene with a larger dei task force on a monthly basis we're committing to meeting on a monthly basis inviting new constituents if they'd like to join we would also obviously be implementing the ddi plan throughout the 22-23 school year we are going to establish as per the policy that was adopted in february uh building dei teams and then administrators and the ui liaisons will work together and then strategic strategic planning meetings will take place with boces administration and our dei liaisons and the purpose of that is it's beautiful to be able to have a friend but if you don't
think about how you're going to intentionally implement the plan there has to be strategy behind what we do then it kind of doesn't work sometimes so that's where boces will be coming in we actually did have a session with uh amanda who is the facilitator from both seas and we started off some of the planning work already and i do have a video to present i just wanted to i called upon a student who was a part of she was very integral in our dei task force she actually uh just graduated and is actually a quarter up um last week and um actually on her way to college and she's prepared and i told her you know i would love for you to present with me she actually presented with me last time shea rodriguez
and um she couldn't commit to coming in he said well what about a video is there a video that you can present in regard to why right you should move forward with such a plan and what this would mean for our students parents and community um so she ran with it she sent me the video and amongst all the other things that she's doing to get ready to go to college and just shows you you know her commitment although she's you know a former grad moving forward but it just shows you her commitment to this work hi my name is shay rodriguez i was a member of the student constituent group of the dei task force and i think that this dei plan will be extremely beneficial to our school district because as a student
i feel that you know policies and practices are supposed to benefit us but that we don't always have a say or sit at the table and creating or changing those policies and practices and i think things in the dei plan like google survey for students continued use of dei teams and constituent groups focus groups an individualized plan for each building all of these things allow not only students but every single constituent group in our community to truly have a say in the policies that affect them i also think that our school district is very diverse we don't always practice truly equitable and inclusive practices and i think assessing the things that are school districts like class placements courses course materials extracurricular activities and revising policies through a truly dei lens will allow every single student
to have an equal opportunity to strive to their full potential in our school district and will allow our exposure to not only be diverse but have the truly equitable and inclusive components as well thank you all so much and it was an absolute element of serving on the dei task force this year thank you shay any questions on the ei web um i just want to say it was it was a pleasure um working with everyone on the uh task force it was just it was great and just to hear you say that we're staying in the amazing awareness part i feel like so many school districts rush and try to implement something and make it more winter dressing then really um integrated into the into the the foundation of our district and so i
thank you anna for doing this and um and really when we do reconvene i think if any of the other board members have a day that they can join it it's just it was fascinating it was fascinating to hear students like shea and others and and the community really just talk about their perspectives and you know again it's just very eye-opening and it's more about raising awareness than anything else and understanding each other up close and so i encourage everyone so i thank you for bringing this all together and continuing to be the leader in this i appreciate it thank you for the support and um that that's that's key one of the biggest things that we spoke about was that that's cute or how i'm saying spanish it's a plan right um but if
it's not embedded in everything that we do moving forward and there's no point in doing that doing you know ddi work so that's we had a lot of conversations around the table and that's why the phase one is critical to the work that we're doing because what you're seeing across nation or districts just having the oops factor and not realizing that some members in the community are just not ready because of whatever reasons and it's just building that awareness to just make a better district and it has to embody everything that we do every decision that's made and just it can't be you know just adam it has to be all of us so i thank you for you know allowing me to be able to facilitate you know this kind of work it has
been exciting a lot of um it's been a rollercoaster of emotions for all who are on the team and um thank you any other questions um so phase one we're working on this year again when do you see how long is this process is your vision of getting through phase two and basically how do you see that playing out i would imagine that phase two is going to be good in the following year um but it all happens organically that's what this work really has to entail happening organically but i do see that if we are committed that it could definitely happen you know to be to begin phase two the following year and that's what the team will do the team the ddi task force team will be charged to then reset and also
there's also going to be an accountability piece where individuals such as the ias or the administrators who are present they will be providing us with updates in regards to how the plan is currently being met and then moving forward we're going to talk about what needs to be tweaked for the following year and then what can be added in order to enter facebook and then and then you know i truly believe that things are going to happen organically because you know one of the things that i've been telling team members is that you can't shove these kind of things on people's throats absolutely not i can't um force you it's not about that it starts with awareness itself and i think many times we mess up on that where it really starts with the individual
and a lot of the raising awareness will be on that and i just wanted to reiterate what dr dyno said that your work on this is amazing and your leadership and the amount of time that you put into this is incredible and thank you i just want to thank you for that thank you you all can use the work and you know looking for a different lens in life and working on that diversity and equity and inclusion thank you and this work wouldn't be able to be done without you know the commitment and the support from above so thank you dr dino you know for leading the charger for supporting because without our superintendent we're administrators already to the building buildings you know we wouldn't or other administrators who are students you know at the
central level as well they were it was very difficult i don't think i would want to do this kind of work [Music] i just want to echo what mr smith is [Music] and i want to encourage other members of the community and the board to participate because even though this was a committee that was task oriented it was a learning process for many involved the conversation that took place were enlightening eye opening um and i commend you anna for just facilitating a meeting that was uh committed it was very challenging at times you did a basic job thank you okay public comment we heard on agenda items only at this time the board of education encourages public participation school-related matters at board meetings and any group organization wishing to address the board must identify as
a single spokesperson presentation should be as brief as possible and no speaker will be permitted to speak for longer than three minutes the board will not commit in public session discussion involving individual district personnel or students all speakers are to conduct themselves in a civil manner obscene language library statements for violence statements advocating racial religious or other forms of prejudice will not be tolerated persons making representative presentations at the board meeting will address the remarks of the president and may direct questions or comments to board members or other district officials only upon a promoting president all right [Music] great thank you president um dudley i would like to just go over a couple things it's been a long night and jane is going to report on the teacher orientation program which again we just finished
day one but i did want to give you an update of roma where we are um as i mentioned to the new group the group of new teachers today we have a history in our district of parents registering late for school so we have registration appointments all through this week and all through next week so the numbers i give you today are going to be very different from the numbers that will i'll share with you at the end of this week or even next week but as of right now we have 42 students registered for our pre-k program now we've planned three classes and we plan to have 60 some which was what we had last year but as of right now the current enrollment is 42. if you recall several years ago our pre-k
program was up in the 90s um but the past couple years it's been the 70s and kind of migrated back to the 60s um so i'm hoping that the pattern will continue and that will be up to the 60s in a little bit when we look at the um total school numbers for southampton elementary school we're at an enrollment of 372 students right now let's get down to the end of june but we'll see where we followed that at the intermediate school 369 and at the high school 596. so those are those numbers of students in our power school that have been scheduled for and are ready to go on first day in september as i said i don't expect those numbers to stay i believe all of them will grow but that's where we
are as of today the other thing i want to report to you is staffing staff hiring we are still down some positions we had some in fact while we're waiting for the board meeting today some teachers who are going to be out on child care leave we got two people who extended their leads or changed the dates their leave so now we have to again either confirm that the people we've hired can stay those longer dates or make some arrangements we still haven't filmed a math league replacement at the high school and we have a math probationary position at the high school we haven't filled yet justin we have a music strings leave replacement we have to fill and you know and a five week enlvd where the interviews go as well why am i
missing anything else and i will tell you this i am concerned one of the teachers who is you appointed last spring was supposed to be here today was not here today and we can't get in touch with this person so we're gonna we don't know that's a bad sign or something so so we might have a special opening i know if this person has accepted another job and just hasn't told us yet or whatever but these are the last minute items that we typically deal with this year it's more than it has been in the past and quite honestly positions are harder to fill this year than they have been in any year in the past so we'll keep plugging away to do our best to have competent bodies in place in school mr mango
thank you mr president um it's only a few items financial items on the agenda for tonight um i did not bring an audit and finance committee together for this meeting because there aren't that many items um you'll see a couple of summary warrants for 729 we also have a transfer that you'll be improving tonight and a couple of the claims auditor report for june and july you'll also see an agreement with a company called book smart that we hired to assist with payroll yeah now that uh mr and john lehrer who used to do payroll for us that move on to another district so if you fill in the gap we hired a company to assist donald christina ken who's also in payroll i think that's it for as far as the financial items on
the agenda if you have any questions i'd be happy to [Music] a clear public service announcement a reminder to all our community and our families and i say well i mean all even though the focus will be on special ed and of course my only and southampton moment that i'd like to share so the uh the announcement has to do with upcoming meetings and we're confirming dates and time but it is will be soon and it will be in the midst of all the busy time that we have with coming back to school and orientations and all the excitement that the opening of school brings we are supporting a meeting at each building to accommodate all of our families so there will be two meetings at the elementary school two at the intermediate and two
at the high school at each building we will have a meeting with our families who are available during the day we will be doing the same in the evening that's why there will be two in each building this will be all about the pathway to special education not that i'm recruiting but i do want our families all of our families to be more intimately educated on what that really means what it's about and more importantly conversations about things to be proactive about so that it doesn't require a pathway to special education so i'm looking forward that's why i want to emphasize that it's to all of the members our community not just our special education families um and only in southampton will you have a staff who gather to um coordinate this gorgeous barbecue and
to call it a barbecue is like minimizing i mean when i got served salmon i'm like where am i is this cinderella or is this a barbecue chicken i mean i could go on and on it was more about the whole vibe of staff coming together to just take a minute after a very very busy summer with everybody supporting all things at all our buildings for summer programming and just taking a moment to just be together and it was beautiful and they really the staff who coordinated it and cooked and cleaned and decorated it was a beautiful time for them to be together and i was honored to be there the other moment is i don't know whether to complain or celebrate them but our guidance department is exhausting they are exhausting in the most
beautiful way so any family who has concerns about their child need not be you've got your guidance counselors especially at the intermediate school in high school because they're all busy now they are scrutinizing every child's schedule their iep they picking up on any discrepancies picking up on any things that might be quirky with scheduling and reaching out to me they not only reach out to me to say fix it they reach out to me to check and make sure that it is an adherence to their iep but they also have solutions already planned listen there was like brandon you would think that he's been here for 10 years with the nuances he's bringing up so it's really a major compliment and another that's soft dating you don't see this type of intricate care and attention
that goes into things but that's our staff [Music] i'll be as quick as possible so we have a couple of updates with curriculum instruction so today as dr dino indicated we had our first day of new teacher workshop that is going to be a three-day event today was the marathon day so they got here eight o'clock they had breakfast lunch and dinner with us today which was impressive um and we spent a lot of time learning about technology really getting to know the administrators they met with the sta um tomorrow we have a jam-packed day again to go through more technology we're going to go through some platforms get them set up with great books and um they also did their personnel paperwork today which was a huge help we had uh susan come over
here for the first time because there were 17 of them so rather than 17 separate uh separate meetings we did it all together which was great um and there was help and remind the lord how we ended the day we well i didn't get there now we also went on juni's informative yet magical bus ride so and he served donuts which was great i mean it did there was a large sign that said no eating on the bus while he was handing out donuts so he served hank's cider dumpster so it was great um or maybe he actually didn't have napkins he said pretend you're five and you're wiping your face yeah um so it was a lot of fun we had a great time um and um we have just three full days of
learning and um it's gonna be a long three days but it's gonna be great we have such a great a great team coming on that is just so positive and so happy to be here so that was awesome um the admins we participated in three professional development sessions this month just to give you guys i know you know about it but they are complete now we did meet with dr maria dove for co-teaching we spent a day with her discussing um co-teaching expectations in the classroom and setting that up and then we also met with dr debta luca last week where we focused on goal setting and strategic planning for the new school year and then we met with amanda chansing who is the coordinator at boces for dei and she also started our first
strategic planning session with us last week as well so we've had like a really busy few weeks but we're super excited to get the year started um and then we're just gearing up for convocation and really welcoming everybody back so that's any questions would you share something we found this very interesting today along with it's kara's i thought it would be interesting to the new teachers who didn't know you and johnny junior were husband and wife and they see our tour guide come and hug you and kiss you um all right thank you very much um all right now we're on to the committees of the advisory committee so does everybody have a copy of this all right so um okay audio and finance it looks like we've got kind of a range of jermaine
uh mr smith mr mckenna mr king mr mckenna would anybody like to be an alternate asian personnel um there is also yes um yes okay and yes i would like to move up into the personnel um [Music] try something different okay uh let's see communications committee for that all right special education we could use an alternative [Music] is what you know policy i've been on that policy since i've been on the board you know i'm more than voluntary language does anybody else want to be a policy [Laughter] it's a lot okay um so then wellness committee do we have an alternate wellness community it's jermaine care anastasia right okay [Music] okay looks like we're done with that next one [Music] membership and we'll start the process of setting up available games in time so that
we can get committees going as soon as possible yet soon he just hooked it too long [Laughter] baby dog do you guys know what was your point okay so audited finance mr smith this is mr king and this is winning alternate for facilities we're gonna have mr king this is robinson mr mckenna anastasia is also good personnel committee uh mrs cavales mr smith mrs robinson and then mr mckenna's alternate policy mr king mr smith myself mr mckenna is ultimate infrastructure and security myself miss springfield mr um mrs wallace and so i wrote infrastructure and infrastructure and mr mckenna is alternate communications will be mrs dallas mr mckenna mrs rickfield no alternate special education would be mrs robinson miss this is novalis as alternate and myself and wellness mr smith mrs winfield this is the officer
i'd like to move the motion that those committed does that bypass the policy i'm just like you get it out there so the college community can't come to it's on the record then okay perfectly give me a second that any member wishes to discuss or has questions about as presented in the agenda 11.17 11.18 what does this mean in english when you have a deduct change order i thought we were getting money back but especially down below we've got a credit change order so what does that mean uh is so [Music] that's for annie and all any and all that any member wishes to hold out for separate action as presented in the agenda there without objection consent agenda items 11.01 to 11.22 are here recorded as presented in the agenda are there any financial
items from 12.01 through 12.05 that any member wishes to discuss or has questions about it as the presentation of the agenda are there any financial items 12.01 through 12.05 that any member wishes to hold out for separate actions as presenting the agenda that objection financial items 12.01 through 12.05 right here hereby approved presented in the agenda are there any personnel items 13.01 through 13 or a that any member wishes to discuss or have questions about as presented are there any personal items 13.01 1 through 13 or a that any member wishes to hold out for separate action as presented in the agenda that objection personnel is 13.01 1-13 and a are hereby approved as presented in the agenda okay are there any personal items 13.02 14 through 132 b or c that any member wishes
to discuss or have questions about as presented are there any personal items 13.02 through 14 through 132 who you see that any member wishes to hold out for separate action as presented in the agenda yes could you please hold out number 128. and can you also please hold that 114. okay for that objections personnel items 0.02 14 413 115 through 129 through 132 b and c i hereby approved as presenting the agenda am i the motion to include personal issue 2.02114 as presenting the agenda [Music] they have a motion to approve personal items 13.02 128 as presented in the agenda second all in favor uh okay may have a motion to approve the minutes of august 2nd 2022 regular meeting in the august 12 2022 special meeting as presented sorry second second second all in
favor i'm very happy to be able to move an item from unfinished business to finish business as we closed on the district office on friday afternoon [Applause] we now move to the phase where we start redesigning the interior space and then proceeding as to what we need to do to get renovations um well i have you all here together just because it's easier to talk to i hope while you're all here together one thing that we're trying to wrap up is the dates for the dei training so um i did hear back from everybody that not everybody is available for those last two dates that i sent out so while we have anna here and while you guys are all here i was wondering if we could maybe iron out when perhaps we could send
that um and i hate to put you on the spot but i know i offered up two dates to the board but there were two other dates that were available do you remember what those dates were so far none of the dates work that i've sent out so we're kind of starting over again so rather than october 17 october 17 or november or november 7. they are both mondays unfortunately boces does not have a tuesday available i know we were trying for that for a tuesday that wasn't a board meeting but that they are not available on those days it's a it's a one day about a three hour training all right so does that work for everybody no okay you're out of town okay all right so the other one was november 7th which
i don't believe works for dawn well i guess that's for you guys to discuss i don't want to decide that for you all um but maybe you could discuss quickly whether or not you want to go ahead and have the training have one member missing or if you want us to reach out to um proceeds perhaps for some other dates we're going to be done during is [Music] yeah if you don't mind to reach out to boces and see if we can't get to other dates other than the ones that they provided us so one day of the week monday was the day that i know that's possible to be coordinated because we have to give posts and subscribers you know tuesdays won't work for them mondays they give us every available date in november
so is there another night [Laughter] yeah so maybe if you don't mind and we can find out and then um as soon as anna's getting years back and we'll see i'll reach out again and we'll give it another go but you know i apologize i know it's getting a little confusing because i'm sending several emails but i just thought it might be easier if you try to like please now we know none of those days working starts right okay thank you sorry thank you okay [Music] all right new business [Music] just one thing i i had sent amy an email today um [Music] i've usually been the voting delegate for the new york state school boards when we met as a convention and then i'm not going to convention and so i declined saying that
we have a resolution but then i forgot that the the annual meeting now is being held virtually on the night of october the 17th which could be talking about at four o'clock so uh i will be the geeky one and i'll sit through that and i'll brief you on those resolutions but uh you're going to have to the next board meeting have a resolution that would point me to be a voting delegate for the south carolina school a little bit different subject you would have had i had a young lady who takes care of my hr and then when she found out school was going back there she was crying she was very upset with me because she said uh you probably voted for resolution too there's a lot of people in this area are
struggling for employees and we depend on our youth to help us out i know that mrs hunter used to play the same thing about the powwow and losing you know starting school before labor day and i hope something next year when we look at the calendar the administration takes a hard look we depend on these students who are 14 15 16 17 18 to work in the resorts to work in the stores and then we put them back to school i don't think it needs a very good work ethic i know it's important to go to school but some of these kids need the money you know a lot of these kids take the money home for their families and you know i wouldn't have been working for going to school and i wouldn't encourage
them to work [Music] this evening i talked about a work study program i think southampton really needs that uh you know most of my employees i do have something from south africa high school something in school most of them come from have some days i think we need that kind of you know program i think the work strong work ethic and i think you know we talk about college and one of those things i think the trades you know all the trades the hospitality industry we should really always but just to be clear mr king and i take your point well we don't like to start before labor day just the placement of holidays this year made us didn't worship but for us to preserve other days that we liked as a community we did
start that however we did consider work for the labor day weekend as well as the pow-wow there is no storm friday we're still on thursday and then it's off to tuesday after labor day so students who do work the weekend can work friday saturday and sunday and monday right but that thursday there is i just think it's something would you really be conscious of yeah very amazing correct correct but they also don't have them the full week at easter they don't have some of the things that we have right so that's what we had as a community we we spent a lot of time on the administrative team as well as the teachers union but they get to look at the calendars well we had seven different versions of what would be exciting i know
i remember i remember i'm just saying it's i think it's one of those most important things okay all right um you're gonna have to go back into executive session so to you so we're here okay they have a motion to return to executive session for discussion of the employer history between the people of clinical negotiations are shown to article 14 of the civil service law management confidential by federal state law and the closed sale room property i'll move it with a curfew of 45 minutes [Music] executive sessions beginning as apt
