001history of a particular person were discussed in america evacuation um on activation of the fire alarm we need evacuation to the closed emergency executive park the emergency exits and assembly areas are located at the emergency exits and outside assembly areas please exit away from the building so as to not interfere with the fire department and proceed to the evacuation areas just follow the directions of the school officials and once assembled outside the building everyone must wait until all clears given by school officials before re-entering the building [Music] robinson is absent soon he shared with them here jermaine al smith here does the court get my auditions yes personal items 11.02 five six and 75 have been deleted from the agenda the next board of education will be held on tuesday august 23rd at 6 30
002pm and there will be a regular meeting freshman orientation will be on monday august 29th from 9am to 1pm at the high school and jason university's fall sports began monday august 27th um call comments are any public comments tonight um i've been working closely with both dr bacher and miss martinez on some items and one of them has to do with a day that we needed i feel i'd like to recommend to the board that you consider is a day on a pd day that includes goal setting priority setting with the facilitator for the for the first half of the day the second half of the day would be some team building activities we have it all set up for um for august 18th it's a thursday it happened at sequoia center starting at 8
003am we'd go to 8 to 12 with dr deb deluca who will be facilitating the administrative retreat as i said the priorities in the goal setting portion and then we break for lunch and then go from one to four to long island adventure with the facilitator who do the team building activities with the administrative team um in order for this to happen because of the admission to be absent from their office space that day and for the financial point of it i would need the board to approve a resolution that allows us so i wanted to ask you with your permission if you agree with this i have a motion prepared that you can consider tonight about approving such a such an event it's the first time we've had one since i've been here in
00416 years that would again spend the day where we as administrative team now we have so many new members can learn to function as a team and set our plans and priorities for 223 in one day event that there's nothing going on in the district summer school is over regions have over and we're not yet started with the new teacher orientation so i don't know if to approve the establishment of an administrative team retreat on august 18th whereby members of including administrative support personnel and determined by the superintendent of schools shall attend one professional development training at the eastern subject vortices sequoia facilities in hultsville between 8 a.m and 12 p.m and two team building activities at the adventure park at long island on springs road wheaton heights new york between 1 and 4 p.m
005and optimizes the necessary expenditures therefore and again my hope is that this will be the start we come back to and talk about when we present our goals for the year this will be our formation of the building goals and the district goals that will report to you on september okay [Music] thank you madam president um i don't have a lot to present um you'll see several items on financial items which were credited by the audit and finance committee um that you'll be voting on tonight if there are any questions i'll be happy to answer them you'll see a couple of corrective action letters those are in response to the audits we had two audits um internal control artists where they looked at the transportation department and we looked at the purchasing policies so we
006were cited on a couple of minor items which i responded to in corrective action letters and then we also had reported the risk assessment order in the spring again um we were cited on a couple of minor items um several of which we already responded to and we'll see that in the corrective action um last week we had the external auditors who came in for their preliminary visit for the um financial statement audit and they'll be back in september to finalize that process and once that's done um that's the one usually where the partner comes in and present the result of the financial statement which they usually do around october so if you have any questions i'd be happy to answer them only in southampton moment uh just to comment on the extended school year
007program which is um coming to a close next friday you would never feel that it's coming to any sort of a pose with the level of energy that goes on there i'm a major shout out to all of the staff who not only are providing uh instructional designs that maintain attention for quite some time in this scene when most of their friends are at the beach they are making learning such fun and because it's summer and because we're not done unfortunately with covid there has been a tremendous impact on the day-to-day just in terms of making sure we have proper coverage i don't even have to ask it's the teachers it's michelle moroela our speech clinician it's it's our school social worker molina it is our physical therapist who team up and are the first
008ones to chime in and help cover i could go on and on but it really is a uh an impressive program that provides a huge amount of intervention that these children so desperately need but done in a fun and loving way and the other only in southampton is these teachers for tomorrow i don't want to wait till tomorrow they're amazing it has been goosebumps awesome to see these young men and women from our high school learning to be teachers and you barely know that they're learning they come in they are taking charge we we have some who are doing such amazing work that they will refer to the extended school year program because we go an additional two weeks where the other summers work it's incredible only in southampton i'm [Music] summer school program for
009k-6 concluded last friday july 29th we had approximately 85 students attend daily um the four weeks was a huge success focusing on strengthening outcomes of grade level standards and reading writing and math and they built in time for making connections and engaging in collaborative learning opportunities every time i was there the kids were fully engaged and having a great time um the summer school at the high school for the specific classes that we're offering will conclude by the end of this week and the month of july was super busy by just getting all the classes you know just with bryan school and um the elementary school in middle school and they did a great job so just a big thank you to the teachers and the clerical staff and the custodians that really brought everything
010over set everything up for us um and the parents getting the kids there getting them on the bus in the summer time and the kids of course the administrators who really worked to support the program for the last four weeks it was a great program we have some things that you're approving tonight for personnel or some appointments in upcoming curriculum writing um at shs we have roughly six new courses that are being written we also have grades cater to spanish teachers are developing a scope and sequence for phonics um as well as choosing some authentic spanish mentor texts and resources to add to our dual language curriculum um grade students and uh teachers and grades data five will be readjusting the order of lessons in their scope and sequence that they created last year um
011and creating more mentor texts and resources to add to that as well as grades five and six uh teachers ela teachers are going to be working with the staff developer in the next few weeks to create a framework for our new 80-minute block um they're going to create a scope and sequence develop lessons identify the proper resources and mentor texts that are aligned with sixth grade and fifth grade standards um all this is being grant funded just so you guys know everybody i've been working closely with gene to ensure that we're using our school improvement funds for this type of work as well as the professional development for the admin teams so dr dyno explained to you a little bit about our work with debt deluca that's coming up and we're going to be working
012on goal setting as well as we also have a pd scheduled on co-teaching with dr maria dove she will be coming in so that we can all be a cohesive unit when we are supporting our co-teachers and classrooms moving forward so that's our first um pv session that's scheduled ben president um jim you mentioned there are six courses they are there's a creative writing course there's freshman seminar um [Music] science correct there's a science course very yes it's a freshman seminar sophomore seminar creative writing music theory one and two um there was italian one and there was our new environmental course just a false question are we dropping anything to replace them no we did not this was um all these courses were presented at the board meeting where we did um speak to some
013of the changes the only changes in terms of not dropping more ap environmental into the college level environmental course just to increase access to that um we didn't use part of our latin program to just not course requests hence why we started the italian rights of those types of changes are there any consent agenda items hereby recruiting as protected are there any financial items from 10.01 to 10.12 that any member wishes to discuss and ask questions you guys gotta speak in the life typically this has to do with private schools that are located in another district so bridge hampton and thank you ross uh one of our students were provided with health services and they typically build a district of residence for that um that objection financial items 10.01 through 1012 are hereby approved as
014presented in the agenda personnel uh okay are there any personal items 11.01 or two that any member wishes to discuss or have questions about as presented are there any personnel items 11.01 one or two that any member wishes to hold out for separate action as presented in the agenda or hold off okay um so i have mad motion to what table are you going to discuss i moved to the table further discussion on the board world okay all in favor [Music] um that objection first of item 11.02 is two uh this all right are there any personal items 11.02347 through 74 or 76 through 127 that any member wishes to discuss or have questions about it as presented are there any personal items 11.02 347 through 74 76 through 127 that any member wishes to
015pull that separate action as presented in the agenda yes could you hold out 123 please without objection personnel items four 11.02347 through 74 and 76 through 122 and 124 to 127 are hereby approved as presented in the agenda we have a motion to improve personal item 11.02 one two three is presented in the agenda second okay i think okay okay so fall in favor all right okay i have a motion to approve the minutes of 7 5 20 the organizational meeting events of 75 2022 regular meeting corrections sorry for the correction that seemed sure tara's name is still not there um of the attendance your hands so i need a motion so we're going to write about the vmware committees and amy sent out the chart um a week or so ago and um has
016anybody committing thoughts they might want to sit down and change i think we could take the academic center wall because it doesn't seem like for the past few years we've had it no but i will tell you what we're working on in blue the academic center we have a successful principal's cabinet at the high school we're now going to be establishing that at each of the other two buildings what we'd like to do is perhaps quarterly bring the time where we could bring in the three groups together and invite a board member to kind of hear the reports of each of the three and again we'll bring that element of student voice to um so before we hear everything we're working on without the element of a full day off like the academic side used
017to have so i think there could be shorter meetings that also are productive so that would replace the idea i'm familiar with the committees i served on but if someone who sits on the other community could maybe just kind of summarize where they are they focus on what their goals are sure let's start with the audit well that's the one committee we're required to have right that reviews all the financial information before every meeting that's where all the big what's on decisions well that's a committee i served on maybe i should just say i served on audit and finance and personnel so i understand wellness so i understand those committees but the others i felt like um i really didn't know does anybody have any questions about that community but again i think for germaine's
018benefit just so you know facilities committee is where we get together with marcus um once a month and he updates where we are with any of the uh initiatives we have with rebuilding things or any of the items that are going on in the schools he goes over the capital projects and he goes over to planning for the next time that there's um he's putting capital both you know putting up to the authority to the public to vote on capital projects for the upcoming year um so it's really um it's a busy committee with um a lot of information from the marcus but marcus is the key driver of that committee okay and i apologize for my brain and what i'm really really happy at different times so i want to start with audit and
019finance that's what i was thinking about is there any questions um the audit and finance committee we usually mean once a month except around budget time where we meet several times in the month uh basically everything that has to do with the district finances are discussed there um i usually generate several reports every month for the board to approve so we usually go over those uh reports and uh if there are any questions um i answer them we also look at all the warrants the wines are basically all the bills that are paid by the district so we usually go to them um at each meeting we usually have several warrants because they happen every two weeks along with payroll so we have discussion about those um around budget time um we have discussion about
020you know the tax cap um everything that has to do with the budget um you know i developed a budget in collaboration with the building principles and the directors but of course the board has an input as well um especially in terms of the future plans of the district some of the strategic plans of the district um make referred to their capital projects so those are usually part of the discussions you also look at um all of the reserves for instance if you want to draw money from the capital reserve to purchase to purchase new buses let's go into the discussion uh when i have the preliminary budget i usually present it to the audit and finance committee then i usually make the presentation to the board and the general public so everything that has
021to do with the district finances or fed it through the quarter finance committee in addition to that we discuss any audits that happens in the district um as i don't know you may be aware that there are um several districts i'm important we have the internal auditors um rs abrams they do one two three orders every year uh we have the external auditors um that's calling in denonsky and they do the financial statement audit at the end of the year that's when you close the books and then they do all the financials and then i come and present to you the fund balance and how much we're going to appropriate to the budget uh we also have the claims auditor the claims auditor comes in that serene associate they come every other week to threat
022all of the transactions before they are presented to the board for approval so usually at the end of the month they send a letter to the board president to let them know if there are any findings all these things are vetted through the and i will tell you gene is very well organized in the reports you know we go through a lot of information very you know personnel is really that's probably one of the most important committees i think he started that five or six years ago and it really does streamline the meetings tonight because it's where all the personnel recommendations are vetted by the personnel committee and questions are answered and it really streamlines them the board meetings when they have a meeting like tonight where there are 126 items any questions are answered
023beforehand so you have your questions asked and answered prior to the time you need to vote so it's really an important committee um it's really helped us as i said save time at board meetings and helped us stay organized and make sure we have everything to you in a timely fashion to be vetted at the personal committee prior to your um quoting on the following year again once a month before the business meeting policy committee is probably the most important committee that there is in the district it's also a never-ending committee in the most overwhelming committee because there's so many policies that need to be reviewed and updated so often we didn't accomplish as much as we needed to over the past year or so because we've been waiting with um for the adoption of
024the dbi committee because that's going to kind of be the overarching umbrella for several other policies that need to be adopted here so you can see code of conduct we have attendance we have curriculum adoption textbook production we're going to have so many other things that follow as a result now so i expect policies to be very busy this year and there's a lot of work that needs to be done and it's a lot of integration into some updates that we have that we can now include um some of our work with moving forward such as attendance the code of conduct we haven't been able to move forward because the policies that you really have on the books are still outdated so we need to do the work on protocol requires by state banding on
025committees at each of the building levels to come together to contribute toward the development of those recommendations so it is it's a it's a very cumbersome test but it's one of the most important ones we have infrastructure and security is probably one of the most important communities you also have i keep saying that but that is um its technology its security and its facilities and it's the integration of all three for things that interact with all three um it's julianne marcus and franklin and we talked about projects such as the door locks that are now electronic we talked about the integration of the smart boards in the rooms we talked about any new spaces that are there and how we make sure we are wired for technology or that technology can be used and technology
026is considered um also the impact of what julianne does in technology the impact that might have on security and on facilities so it's again the integration of all three to make sure we're moving with a purpose in a unified fashion um again it's once a month and it's what's important to me yes communications communications that's probably one of the easiest committees we have that means quarterly and what it is it's our meetings with um our pr firm which is syntax where we design what the topics will be on each of the newsletters and each of the publications that we put out we talk about what we want to appear on facebook and we really kind of let our firm know what our goals and objectives are for the year and to make sure they highlight
027any activities we do that contribute towards them um typically they're by zoom with a syntax term but it's really just setting the tone for the next quarter that's going to happen and what we're going to use them for and goes over all things confidential there's a great deal that goes on with special ed that sometimes requires fiscal decisions or fiscal consequences to decisions so those are things that are shared with the board to get advice and guidance especially when there's physical attachments to decision making it was to do with the reading and um the programs that we were [Music] trying to tackle some of the um literacy issues remember this trisha and then it kind of evolved into more legal stuff and so where i'm where i'm kind of born about it that a lot
028of the information is because there's decisions um well i think one of the things about any of the committees is that there's three members of the board on all of them and it's our job to offer advice but it's our job as board members to turn key information back to the rest of the board now obviously we can do that facilities on that the united states policy benefit finance um i think when it comes to uh the special ed i love you mentioned it started out maybe a little towards the kind of reading uh some of the we are concerned about our numbers special education students that maybe are misclassified because of you know language issues i think now that we have an assistant superintendent for uh educational services let's say that i think that
029would go a little bit more there um so the special education committee per se i mean it's still it's kind of just uh uh we're just you know three members of this committee of this board that are just simply hearing something and saying all right so what do we think and then it will be our job if we meet an executive session that's why we talk about you know if we if we do do do discuss something it has a financial impact let's think for the award agreed to put the resolution on a board agenda that the public will include so i i think maybe we could i i have no real feelings one way or the other i mean i've sat on it so i've listened to it so i'm aware of these issues
030i think part of the things that i think that we need to maybe do with the best job even at board meetings is having the board members communicate with the full board everything that's going on i think something first we have to trust each other in the world but i mean listening and sharing um maybe we have to do a little better job at board meetings uh getting it out there but the legal stuff that special energy can't discuss in public correct and then the only thing is now that we have now debaucher i thought that if we're going to be done with the reading aspect then maybe we should include you and does that evolve into different things because the legal stuff takes up a lot of time but you're not making decisions right
031now we are just music we are guided we're absolutely and you're sort of flushing things out but that legal stuff has to come to the board well yes the altogether does and i'm not sure it's as efficient as it should be in getting that information out so that's why i'm trying to figure out what we should do with that community because it should be really focused on the reason why it was developed was because of the reading officials and some of the expressions from parents who were frustrated so i'm wondering if this should have bothered to like it differently and then the legal stuff isn't making it to the whole board necessarily i mean i don't know if it's just because of this particular year and the particular cases but i feel like the last
032situation didn't make it to full board really the time we made and we ended up having a special meeting you know i just felt like it was very rushed part of it where do we fit in the reading stuff because reading is not a special education that would be an academic service if you wanted some sort of academic advisory committee where we review you know certain aspects that come through before you can do that i don't think it's necessarily called under special education it's part of it right well that's to the point from the it's interesting the parents that wanted this sure well it had to do with the work yeah we're looking for the advocacy of the carburetor's family and some other families to address some of the communities the continuum of specialized services
033in the district to be able to articulate it to the public like what specialized services we have so it wasn't based on people who's based on you know the goals of the district and what programs we have it's really to come up with uh as i said a defined consumer that's what it started seventy nine years right right during the course of the year we were talking about incorporating the reading part yes and then he gets to a motion and the lord puts [Music] instead of having seven it's investing it there's three is what happens is then it becomes redundant because you as a board member how much i know or cara knows you need to know what we knew before you go to some sort of financial piece so it is a little redundant
034i think it's very i special it has been an unusual year i will say that um you know again my fellow board members we met at 5 30 tonight for an executive session as we discuss a myriad of items that we um i think that some of the issues probably could be vetted a little bit more with the full board which means a longer executive session you meet earlier or then you stay a little bit later i mean it's just so time consuming for the purpose i think what trish was trying to do is to streamline it but this year it seemed like it became redundant because it just hello i have found it useful i find it useful anytime i'm talking to a board of bed about decisions that are going to affect the
035budget you know and i just talked with nick and gino with that nick team and jamie now yes but i think that there's a responsibility on the board of bed when it comes down to legal aspects of the special ed you know as far as taking care of kids communicating with parents i think that there's been a great deal of work done so that parents are informed and involved and know they feel welcomed and supported so i think that that was minimized but what's always relevant are these situations and uh so he's saying if you know could i bring it to if i had to talk to you tonight about a case there's a lot of background information that i have a responsibility to provide to the board so that you're making informed decisions on
036something that may affect do we go to an impartial hearing or not because it's not just about going to hearing it's the impact that that hearing costs the districts and there's a myriad of extended waiting circumstances that a boy needs to consider in that so that i do find useful um and then the other point is it would have to be a longer exact session because i would need the time to fill in on the entire board then if we are going to no longer have that special ed committee it would need to be replaced with some time and exact session that i'm sharing with the boy because it's certainly not anything i would disclose publicly it's very confidential very private information and yet very relevant and sometimes a fiscal decision also there have been
037times that uh we have set up a zoomie with attorneys at the committee so that we've now heard with the attorney the rest of the board they're not going to do that it's about 30 tonight but we did do it at 10 o'clock on friday morning so i just i i understand the concern they have questions or something from me coming here and asking the personnel did you look at this i don't think that's right and that's their outfit again that's when they need to come up for an executive session you know it's about putting trust in the committee to do its job and then you know discuss it but it cuts down spending four hours in the second session you know i used to walk out of here 9 30 at night when i
038first came aboard and then we get done at 12 30. and uh i don't want to go back to those days and it was discussing special ed and those type of things from the point of view of someone who wasn't on that committee that's exactly how it operated for me i trusted those who were really went in depth on those issues and then we had the material to review and discuss in an executive session but i knew that other board members had really thoroughly investigated it so my feels that i were redundant to those who are involved in the committee but it's valuable i do appreciate though the expansion or the for the desire to expand and include arena because i think that is vital so if there is a way and nick is okay
039with having jamie be part of it um maybe that would you know that would be more you know realistic yeah i mean it's as possible updates um code of conduct task force okay that was an option of the policy committee when we needed to go into the code of conduct that we were planning to rewrite for each of the buildings there would have to be a task force where each of the building committees would come together kovit interrupted that whole process we planned to start it two and a half years ago and that covert happened so we never really met so i think this is the year for us to plan that um i would ask that we don't wait to decide on meetings we need to get the kind of a school year underway
040and decide when it's time and then who can facilitate from each of the buildings because we will have um at least two new assistant principals the one at the yellow one an elementary school one for high school and the aps usually are the person would represent the buildings for close contact so we just need to get settled a little bit before we do start that but i would like that to be come after this one okay [Music] i think we should put it on hold and um not choose it yet um what i did want to add to wellness committee because we've been talking about wellness committee for a while i mean it's been an active committee and it's been working however what we're not focused on that i think could fit well under the
041wellness committee umbrella is called seo we talked about the mental health of students we talked about um the anxiety level of students we talked about things under the wellness umbrella but i think we need to look at scl are we having a district-wide approach i think that needs to be the vehicle for where we're going with sel and i think darren as the chairperson for the wellness committee that could be part of his responsibility under that um and jamie and i were talking about that and we do feel that will fit in with the curriculum that we're talking about as well and one of the things that we really wanted to focus um was really just a welcoming and affirming environment which is phase one for us in dei and it ties right into exactly
042what we're looking to do which is building a district-wide sel team which could be part of the wellness committee um to really streamline the practices across the building um so that's one thing that we had actually as an administrative team we discussed and spoke with darren and maybe darren and martha conspira has that committee together and really started to focus on what is seo through each building and how does it relate to a kindergartner pre-k or to 12th grader nutrition and physical activity and i think again i think nutrition and food is important that shouldn't be the only focus i think there's so much more wellness right now but one question so that committee though will meet with parents so that's kind of a daytime uh [Music] it's at 3 30 and one of the
043things that we were hoping to incorporate is having our social workers and guidance counselors and those kind of people there which may mean we might want to shift it to during the day when they're actually at school and they have more flexible schedules um because each building the sel teams tend to be those people are really involved and 3 30 is a difficult time because elementary school teachers are usually leaving at that time while we're still doing dismissal and then high school and multiple teachers are literally gone by then so just to get an increase in participation but does the structure of the current wellness movie include parents and students so maybe even punctuating the time that you could even do sometimes during zoom pull the film things like that so then is it a
044board committee or is it a district like like that's what i wonder and i wondered last year too i mean again nothing prevents a board member from going to a district-wide committee correct correct right so i don't know if we wonder i don't know [Music] like if it's reported does it could be by a board number it could be my administrator who is setting up that committee i think if one of the now you're including sel in that committee i a hand in think you a board that should be one of our focal points with the wellness of our kids mentally okay so yeah i'm not sure if it's a board committee but i think we were talking about committees that should function and again we talked about our dd islands and looking through the
045um the whole new policy and how we how we um formulate some plans i think we need to look at a um a textbook adoption committee and you think we need to make sure we have one lens looking at what textbook series we're adopting from each of the schools and you have a policy that there will be a committee for under each of the textbooks that's something we haven't done since i've been here in 16 years so i think that's something we need to consider it doesn't need to be a board level committee but i think it should be a district committee that when we're thinking of buying a series of textbooks or whatever that there is the formal process we go through with the group of people and that we're considering the dei list
046and again i'm looking at julianne because also with that comes the whole electronic piece does it service our students in the electronic way that we're talking about the one-to-one initiative we have to make sure what we're adopting can be accommodated through our technology as well so i think we do need to revisit that whole process if we really want to be a district with a streamlined focus all right so we don't have to necessarily decide tonight who is this that i look forward but we do we should define so if everybody is good with what we have and then by the next meetings because we're losing the summer to do any work so if we could at least then but the next board meeting then what's that the end of august what do we want
047to do right now i feel like we should because sitting on the board dancers i mean yeah no i can answer the following everybody have time to go through it so if we want to go through if we can do that so all right um right now if so it's once a month it's done um jim and kara does anybody else want to sit down i would like to but i don't know if obviously i'll move so i don't know who's on i mean and also the policy committee just to put that out there actually what else so i'll collect what everybody wants to do um [Music] i know what is in finance [Music] um but as for the others i'll fill in does it open i'm passionate about them all but okay [Music] somebody
048else wants to do it i'm on the way out so okay so financial and policy yeah okay but i probably can't do it right now but um i would be an alternate i'm not in finance and um personnel i feel like those are really healthy people like working and um yes um to accept the committee uh list as discussed except for i'm gonna remove academic senate and uh we're gonna hold up sorry table code of conduct and academic senate have a motion well i think under unfinished business there is something i wanted to write down which is something we visited back in april which was a whole board retreat and we talked about the dei training and we're going to wait till a new board member was elected in order to revisit that um anna
049and karen and i again went to ithaca a few weeks ago and we just saw the importance of making sure that we're all on the same page with our gei policy as we're making decisions so i would really strongly recommend that we consider scheduling getting that on the calendar for this retreat and for the purpose of training sure and dr dyno said it was in ithaca and um ithaca school district and several other school districts who've been um really some of them spending more than a decade implementing um cultural um responses cultural and literary responsive education which is it overlaps with a lot of things um what we call the eye or social emotional learning creating um supportive and um affirming environments for children and i went to two sessions that focused specifically on the
050board's role in this and um dr dyno went to other sessions and um presentation with administrators this is really valuable i found it um [Music] helped kind of it was so detailed in how they certain school districts implemented so that was really stood out for me from other conferences i've attended and again um as as ms wingfield said she attended the boardwalk with the sessions that were reward focused i attended several that were curriculum focused and classroom environment focused as did miss martinez um and the whole thing about our thing for this year is really a welcoming environment and belonging i think we again you as a board need to understand where we're coming from when we bring recommendations to you that just affirm that environment to make sure that every student feels like they
051belong part part of our school and there is equity for all and i really think it's important for you to consider that this this um conference from my point of view it just affirmed a lot of what we've started over the past couple years but also showed us how much we still have to do and again it's not crt it's not anything that's negative it's again making sure that every student has a valuable experience in school and they understand the bigger world behind them we talk about how some of our students aren't successful at college you know they they survive they do really well they thrive in southampton they go to a bigger place after southampton and their home after six months or their home after semester um we need to start preparing our students
052for the world beyond southampton and i think this is a way for every student to appreciate everyone and for us to make sure that students are represented in what they're hearing what they're learning how they're assessed and and how we're doing business so i really um i really appreciated the ability to go to the conference and i appreciated being with both cara and anna was hearing from their lenses different things really just showed me the importance of the ddi work that you see and districts seeing success it also affirmed where we are in the process which is early on and that was very informative and is there anything you just wanted to add about the conference or to be covered no i think we covered everything just thank you for the experience it was valuable
053and um it was nice to see how the district's doing the work that's been you know full on a decade and just seeing the fruits of what they've enjoyed in the long run okay great um for these districts after a decade it was translating into student success the sort of things that we're concerned about and getting it to the achievement gaps but it's a long term effort um well i think it's your availability and are you talking about an evening or you know i don't know what you're thinking of but um i would think adam would be four hours with the dpi so it would have to be a solid four hours of uninterrupted time where we can get trend um i would love if we could have something happen prior to october so i
054don't think you're in the month of september four hours are you thinking of a tuesday night that's not a board meeting night i don't know like i just need some parameters because there's a thousand days a tuesday that's not a good day [Music] during the day before school and then i will reach out and get some possibilities okay great thank you anything else for unfinished business okay um justin added something to the calendar today that we missed at the beginning that wasn't on your agenda do you want to just remind the public in the board thank you so we are having a fifth grade orientation from families it's friday august 26th at 9 00 am so a message went home today and we're inviting all of our rising fourth and fifth graders to come in
055and see the school meet with the faculty and staff practice their lockers with their parents there their guardians there so it was really successful last year we'd do the same thing again this year and just a reminder just logistically for planning that our building will be opening at 7 20 this year rather than 7 30 and we'll be also dismissing 10 minutes earlier just for you so those messages went today but thank you for the opportunity i'm sorry the brian yourself we are starting five minutes earlier for our students so our teacher contractual time remains the same but our bell schedule will move back five minutes um so we start at 7 25 and we end at 2 30. so you have to do that also it's counterintuitive but it all came down to again
056transportation bus and we really thought it was important for our students to have multiple layers of busting but they would we did not have which was uh it did cause some cause of issues throughout so in order to um be able to meet the needs of all the possible sam works magic tim is great but of course you should need a little bit of cushion time in order to get buses to the elementary school so although we work so hard to get a later start time we had to make a decision in terms of what we were going to do with boston who wanted to provide our students with extra health housing and some other stuff we had to go that far and i just want to remind the board i didn't tell you this
057yet but one of the things that is part of the whole big picture is we were working with sam and we now will have a late late bus a five o'clock bus right um at the intermediate school in the high school for sports for clubs for economic health but we offer so many programs your kids can't participate because they can't get home so sam was able to run several bus not several but a couple of buses from the interview school in high school so that when programs end at five o'clock kids can get a ride home so there's no excuse that anything you pay for we plan for that kids can't participate can i if is that are those questions or do they read other regional classes i mean how does that happen there are
058regional two sides of town if you will um they're close to door to door and south levels everything is coordinator but um they're um like one will be one side of town one would be the other she divides our district with two three round two buses it might be wrong here um and i'm sorry abby you wanted to say one thing i cut you off your teeth okay can you hear me i just wanted to mention that we are looking for a host family so um in the past we have had a language assistant uh coming over from spain uh we have a program with the embassy and so we are looking for a homes family uh we put it out district wide on our facebook page it would entail the individual would be coming
059september 1st to the end of april in the past we have had this experience where they end up living with the family and they come to work to be able to work with our teachers and students it's a really rich dynamic language and cultural experience so if you know of anyone please send them our way it's on facebook we have a link where they can provide their interests and his vita is on your facebook site it's all about correct all the details and i'll make sure maybe i'll collaborate with jp to get it on the website as well thank you justin then i cut you up your start time is 7 20 until so our buses are going to unload at 7 20. we'll question starting at 7 25 we'll have an extra period actually
060in the morning which will allow for breakfast a little softer start a little optimization into the building and then we'll have ninth grade and at 2 35 business so 2 35 great and nicole you're starting end times yes may i have a motion to return to executive session for discussion um for continued discussion all in um
