Okay, East Hampton Town Board. This is Matt Chapman calling in from LTV. We are live. We are recording. All lines are opened. Please start. Thank you, Matt. Good evening, everyone, and welcome to the East Hampton Town Board meeting of Thursday, May 21st, 2026. Michael, if you could please read the roll call. Council member Flight. Present. Deputy Supervisor Leace. Council member Rogers. Present. Council member Caldwell Piedmont. Present. Supervisor Burke-Gonzalez. >> Present. If we could all please stand for the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. So, tonight we have seven public hearings. The first six are water quality grant awards, and then the last public hearing is to amend
the code to add the former Maloney properties and the former Downs properties to nature preserve. That'll be followed by public portion. We ask you to kindly keep your comments to 3 minutes, and then resolutions. So, before we start, we have our town crier here. Welcome, Hugh. Thank you, Madam Supervisor. Decoration Day is upon us. >> [snorts] >> Uh now it's called Memorial Day. I think it was changed in 1971 to honor all those who died in the wars. And how did Decoration Day start? Well, there are many stories. One of them says in 18 This All this happened after the Civil War. Um in 1868, after the Civil War, Decoration Day was proclaimed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, John A. Logan. Not to be outdone, Mary Ann Williams of the
Ladies Memorial Association of Columbus, Georgia, said she had the idea of decorating graves of Civil War veterans with flowers. Not to be outdone, Sue Landon of the of Virginia claimed she decorated the graves of Confederate and Union soldiers with flowers in 1865. And here's one that probably didn't get enough recognition. Charleston, South Carolina, 1865. Recently freed, the black population had a parade of 10,000 people to honor the 257 dead Union soldiers who died in the Confederate prison, and then they buried the soldiers and they placed flowers over their grave. So, doesn't make any difference really how it started, it started, thank heaven. And of course the American Legion and the VFW place flags over the graves of our soldiers today, and then we have that great Memorial Day parade in the village. It's small-town America.
It's a Norman Rockwell painting when you see everybody there that day. Um Now, what's coming up on June 2nd, uh there's going to be a presentation I've been told by the supervisor of the Bicentennial markers put together by Chelsea Winslow. Uh and I guess Councilman Lease is going to give us a show, okay? Um and then we're going to have some of our historical societies here to uh to detail what plans they are, right, Madam Supervisor? That they have. >> That's the request, yes. >> That's the request, okay. On June 4th, there's going to be a meeting on June 4th, right? Yes. Okay, well, June 4th, we're going to be talking about John Howard Payne's birthday. And then on June 12th, there's the reenactment down at the Amagansett Life Saving Station. And then on June
th, I'll be talking about Thomas Jefferson Davis. And I'm going to leave you with my three favorite words, >> [snorts] >> Cranberry Hole Bridge. Hugh, can I just say that that you mentioned the Memorial Day parade? We mentioned the date and time. It's Monday, May 25th at 10:00 a.m. Thank you, Madam Supervisor. You're right.
