001good evening everybody and welcome to the Three Village Board of Education meeting for the 14th of September uh we would like at this time to join us at the Pledge of Allegiance Mikhail is going to lead us with liberty and justice for all right thank you so much and we're going to keep it with you Mikhail if you would like to give us your report hi everyone my name is Mikhail Z O'Hare and I'm this year's Ward Melville Student Government president I'm extremely excited to be a part of the Board of Education this year and share updates on our amazing school I'm also so grateful towards everyone on the board of education for providing me with the information that I needed over the past summer so first of all I want to talk about the
002sophomore activities we had that happened over the summer and were a great hit I worked with Mr Bernhard and the Ward Melville site-based management team over the summer to create the first ever sophomore social and we had over 100 sophomores show up and they had a lot of fun additionally many sophomores were able to find their classes with the help of student government volunteers at the sophomore walkthrough I can confidently say that the start of this school year has been nothing but smooth our district has done a really superb job in my opinion of handling the coveted pandemic within our community over the last few years and I'm seeing more and more people open up to each other every day all of the students especially the sophomores seem really happy to be back at school
003and with their friends and with the college application season starting for hundreds of seniors including myself it's really awesome that we're able to find comfort and happiness with our own School so now that we're back into the swing of things lots of clubs have started to have their first meetings and for the most part there have been much larger student turnouts than last year the Ward Melville Players Club for instance which usually had about 15 students per meeting last year had over 55 students at their first meeting last week also the National Honor Society had its meeting just yesterday with over 200 students and the try and music Honor Society met just a few hours ago with over 85 students student government will be meeting tomorrow for the first time and we're expecting a very
004large turnout as well and for those who don't know this student government is pioneering the use of a new platform called passport for good and that'll make it much easier for every Club to log Student Activities so we hope that goes well whilst um while School clubs seem to be knocking it out of the park our sports teams are doing just as well much success the boys varsity football team actually won their first game against Sachem East with a fatal score of 34-12 and their first game home game against Longwood High School is this Friday and we're expecting a lot of school pride in the audience Additionally the boys varsity varsity volleyball team has won almost every game so far along with most of our other sports teams many of our student athletes have also
005actually just been recognized as some of newsday's top players on Long Island so a big congratulations to them now I'm a big music person myself so I have to touch upon music Edward Melville has been making great progress recently the School Musical Mary Poppins has just concluded it's over 50 auditions and students will find out their roles by the end of the week the show is set to happen on December 8 9 and 10 and I strongly encourage everyone here to come see it aside from theater word Melville's musicians have also earned some great accolades over 20 students have just been selected as either a performer or an alternate for this year's prestigious Allstate ensembles which is a record high number and will be traveling to Rochester in the winter for the performance many major
006events are also taking place this year along with some new ones homecoming is just around the corner as we all know and I'm working on planning a homecoming dance with Mr Bernhard for all Ward mobile students the same night as the game also the site-based management team has scheduled a club fair in November where students can explore the over 60 clubs we have to offer at word Melville students should also look forward to Great events such as trick-or-treat Street word melbour's Got Talent Battle of the classes and more overall this school year I can say is going to be filled with very fun events and ways for students to Showcase school spirit with much larger Club enrollments triumphant sports teams and award-winning students I can tell that this year is going to be full of
007success excitement and Innovation thank you first job thank you wow hit it right out of the park there that's awesome thank you I was just going to ask you the passport for good is that going to sync up with the president's volunteer service award so we don't know the details of that yet but in terms of the Seal of Civic Readiness I'm pretty sure that's what it's actually intended for so you can log the activities directly in and it accounts for the seal and I'm guessing that could factor into the president's volunteer service because it's community service so it makes sense it makes it much easier for so many things okay okay well thank you again you did a great job thank you so much you did better job than I did because I forgot
008to note the changes in the meeting agenda 7q approval to ban an individual identified and confidential attachment a from District property which we will Circle back to when we do our consent agenda okay now speaking of the Seal of Civic Readiness Dr gold has a presentation for us oh boy that could be trouble yes yeah please thank you for the opportunity to speak tonight on two important topics that are timely and appropriate here in the Three Village School District the first one will be about the graduation uh um the new graduation enhancement and pathway which is the Seal of Civic Readiness and also the diversity equity and inclusion committee and some of the work we've done and continue to do uh throughout this year so if tonight is a launch I want to be able
009to speak not only to you as a board of education but I'm hoping that this is an opportunity to address students parents staff the community at Large for a launch of an initiative that has been set forth by New York State and that we have embraced this year and and started to um to build last year I would like the opportunity for this this presentation to be um transparent and consistent and an introduction to a large and impactful initiative this is all about community outreach and when you're looking at the four plus one Civic seal pathway community outreach is going to be uh one of the more essential topics that we discuss he sneezed on the truth bless you so tonight when we look at the Seal of Civic Readiness I want to be able
010to focus on three areas the who the why and the how so if you look at the chart that sends behind me you'll see that there are many different Pathways that the State education department has offered as opportunities for students to be able to graduate high school Beyond The Five Regents exams those include things such as the um the humanities pathway the stem pathway the Seal of biliteracy cdos and now we have the Seal of Civic readiness so we start with the who and we say who would be impacted by this the most with respect to students there are many different Whos the first one are those students who will see the co Civic Readiness as a pathway to graduation for some students that perhaps do not have all the opportunities to pass all Five
011Regents exams specifically the global history exam this would be another pathway by which students are able to graduate with their High School Regents diploma for other students this is going to be a mark of a Distinction on their High School transcript so that they can show colleges that they are Civic minded and they are not only College and Career ready but also Civic ready for other students they are simply committed to service to the community and that is a large in large part many of our students in the Three Village School District our culture here is one that is built on service to the community and community service and we embrace the opportunity to honor and recognize those students that uh that look at this Co Civic Readiness as not just a pathway but as
012a market of Distinction as they move through the 712 careers the Civic seal is inclusive and any and all students have the opportunity to complete the requirements it gives room and opportunity for individuality and authenticity and it gives students the opportunity to serve in the community for those who want to make our community our schools our world our nation a better place so why Civics well there's a few reasons first of all it's engaging and it's authentic it's demonstrative it builds character it establishes important Community connections it gives students the opportunity for pride for confidence building it's Preparatory it moves the third C to our graduation requirements not just for students to be College and Career ready but also to be Civic minded and ready and it does the most important thing for what I
013believe teenagers embrace the most and that's for kids to feel like they are a part of something and for many of our students that is one of the most important draws at Ward Melville High School our kids want to feel like they're part of something making a difference and um I think that a lot of the work that we'll do in the Civic seal and the volunteerism component is going to assist and support students in uh in that vision so I wanted to share with you uh this and you all have it at uh at the ready and I'm sure this presentation will be posted at some point rather soon but the Civic readiness domains come from New York State and they're divided into four domains those domains being a Civic knowledge and Civic mindsets
014Civic skills and actions and then of course Civic engagement so uh even though it's divided into four standards I wanted to make it a little bit easier to understand that being the left column is what you think in terms of your Civic Readiness and the right column is what you do so there is a difference but they're all inclusive no one column or no one domain or side is more important than the other students are able to demonstrate Civic Readiness in many ways and while some students are able to do so just by using Civic knowledge other students are more motivated to commit to Civic action and Civic engagement so this is the rubric that the State education department has established in order for students to obtain the Seal of Civic readiness the rubric is
015divided into again two columns one on the left one on the right the left column being Civic knowledge on the right column being more civic participation again I refer back to what I said in the last side slide uh the left side being what you think the right side being what you do for a student to earn the Civic seal they need to get a total of six points on the rubric a minimum of two on the left and a minimum of two on the right but a total of six many students are going to be able to obtain the seal based on what I proudly say is a rather comprehensive social studies program and students will organically be able to get the seal just by nature of what we offer in social studies 712
016when it comes to coursework curriculum electives and projects the district and I'm proud to say this is after so much more than just our students sitting in Social Studies classes that's not just what we think that's what we do and the evidence that we just heard is so apparent by how many students are coming out after school at the start of the school year to join clubs and activities going to help support their work towards not only just the Civic seal because that's just the star on a diploma or a graduation but it's kids becoming Global Citizens getting involved being part of something bigger in our schools and our community and it's so important because not only is it good for them post pandemic to feel like they're part of something and to feel engaged
017but it's also doing the College and Career Readiness piece that's so important so when they leave word marvel they already have the tools that are going to prepare them to go to some college or some job or to the military or whatever they choose to do on their own individual pathway and say I have the tools necessary to interact to be authentic to be part of a team and to do something for the greater good so that's what I hope we're doing here by offering the Civic seal in tandem with all of the wonderful activities that we do at Murphy julinus and Ward mobile High School so when we think of Civic Readiness we're not just thinking about Junior high-end High School we're starting all the way in pre-K formally but let's face it Civic
018ideology is starting at home kids are sitting at the dinner table with their parents they're listening they're talking they're learning the formal civic education plan which lives in standard five of the social studies standards by New York state offers a pre-k through 12 civic education program and while it's difficult to see up here I want you to just take note that the four standards that we talked about before all live right here in the pre-k through four curriculum and there are examples of each so for civic knowledge Civic skills and actions Civic mindsets and Civic experiences one might think on the elementary level that there's not a connection between a civic education program and students I'm going to tell you that our elementary school teachers provide such amazing foundations for the Three Village students when
019it comes to getting kids Civic minded and preparing them for what they're going to see when they get to Murphy and julinus and then eventually Ward mobile high school it's those foundations that don't necessarily live in government but live in kindness compassion empathy understanding roles and responsibilities in the school in the community that make a difference and prepare kids with the skills and tools necessary to move along the pre-k through 12 continuum in order to be prepared for some more in-depth thinking about Civic skills Civic action and Civic mindset and experience so it's no surprise that once you get to the five through eight slide it gets a little bit more in depth about what we do to make good citizens but it's all a Continuum and preparation for when this when the kids get
020to Ward Melville High School and then beyond and the evidence once again I refer back to what we heard before is kids taking action one of the pieces of the rubric that I think is worthy of your time comes up here where we look at the different social studies courses at Ward mobile High School that satisfy the requirements for the Civic seal because this is just the beginning of this work I've only included the social studies but I want to tell you that this is not just the social studies initiative one might think that it's simply social studies because Civics loses the social studies standard however please keep in mind that is this grows quite organically we're going to see other departments at Murphy gelinus and Ward Melville that are integrating directly in to the
021Civic seal so for example I can tell you right out of the gate that the first class that I thought of outside of the social studies was career jump start in the business department because those are students that perhaps have some additional exceptional needs that are out working in the community and work based learning is part of the our requirement that satisfies this part of the Civic seal requirements in the rubric I also thought of the public speaking class that's offered in the English Department at Murphy in gelinas because a lot of the work that they do focuses on Civic action government and social issues of today I thought of instar in the science department where our students are doing research not only in The Sciences but also in the humanities and there are students
022that are interested in taking a humanities-based approach and instar that will also fulfill some of the responsibilities towards the Civic seal our art department has a plethora of opportunities to embrace Civics Community engagement and service with students that can make a difference at different events in the community same with technology department every Department I have no doubt by the time this gets off the ground is going to somehow be involved in Civic service for our kids it allows students to focus on the skills the volunteerism the individuality but I think it's going to evolve beyond the Departments and actually move to courses as well so as this becomes more of a cultural progression what I think is going to happen is teachers are going to start to promote projects within their courses and activities that
023are going to go beyond what I like to call rote curriculum which teachers are following State content and move to more authenticity and skills and giving kids opportunities to what I call just do and by just doing it promotes that individuality and allows students to demonstrate exactly how they want to be participating as Global Citizens it promotes the Civic mindset it promotes Civic action and most of all it helps to promote students experiences and prepare them for Life Beyond Ward mobile High School this is a chart from last year's Ward mobile co-curricular clubs this year's is not quite done yet but will be done soon we have over 60 clubs at Ward Melville High School I'm not even getting into the Murphy and jelena's part yet because there's it provides so many opportunities for our
024712 students but one of the things I've always said in my time at gelinus and then at Murphy as well if your child is coming home at the end of the day every day on the regular bus they're probably missing out on something our schools take pride in the work we do with our kids after schools it's great in the morning to see all the students getting dropped off and the bus is unloading at 10 to 7 but it's even better to watch so few kids leaving at 1 45. now do kids leave of course they do but the Halls are just as crowded at Ward Melville and I would think Murphy and jelena's as well at the end of the day and after school as they are during the day because kids are there
025and they're doing we provide wonderful opportunities now of these 60 clubs it's true not every one of these clubs lends itself to Civic service but many many do and for some of the ones that don't they're going to be doing activities within their clubs that offer opportunities for students to actually do Civic service to the for the community so one of the examples I use for is the greenhouse Club now one might initially assume that the greenhouse Club is more of a science-based club where the kids are in the greenhouse but what are some of the things that could be done in the greenhouse club that lends support to the work students may want to do as volunteers to make a difference in the community it doesn't have to be the greenhouse Club there's probably
026two dozen clubs on this list alone and then added Murphy and julinus we have so many opportunities for our kids Dr Scanlon asked me to add a slide that kind of fleshed out two of these standards here one being Civic skills and action and one being Civic experiences that break down what students should be doing in order to meet these standards not worthy of reading the whole slide but certainly for you and the community to be able to see what are we looking for within the standards and domains of Civic readiness so um what have we already done as a school so we've already done a lot and I just want to highlight a few things first of all just getting this off the ground and understanding the requirements from the New York State education
027department was a job in and of itself because they're allowing opportunities for districts to self-regulate what it means to obtain the Civic seal so we want to do this we want to follow the state guidelines but at the same time we want to maintain the Integrity of the program what I mean by that is a point shouldn't be given on the rubric because the child brings in a can of food that's not Community that's not service to the community that's a donation a group of kids coming from a club and assisting it a food bank just before Thanksgiving is a better example a more comprehensive example of what we would want to do with our kids in order to do effective service to the community we have aligned our work to the state standards as
028you can see we have formed a Civic seal committee which includes other administrators teachers a guidance counselor that helped us throughout last year to build this and get it started we went into the portal when it opened for approval by New York State education department we filled out all that paperwork and we were immediately approved for this current school year so we are ready to good ready to go sorry I kind of gave you what the next bullet is and we hired we kind of went into an agreement with passport for good which we mentioned before now when you think of the Civic seal of Readiness you immediately connect with passport for good I want to tell you the passport for good is a data warehousing that will in part work with the Seal of
029Civic Readiness but it's not only about the Seal of Civic Readiness it's not only about Civics it's about data warehousing for attendance for hours for data for students when it comes to all sorts of clubs activities projects things that will of course include the Civic seal but if the passport for good was a pizza pie Civic seal is maybe two slices there's lots of other opportunities here to use the power of passport for good in order to make things clear for students the passport for good people will say two things it should be engaging for the kids to use passport for good and if teachers and advisor you advisors are using passport for good correctly it should make their jobs easier so I think that's important to note as well I want to thank Lord
030Pimentel the assistance of the superintendent because if not for her Not only would we not be able to do passport for good but I'm not your passport for good would be able to do passport for good because they just had gotten off the ground and I'm not even 100 sure without her help they would have even been able to come this far without uh without her guidance and knowledge about data and and uploading so yeah so uh I want to say kudos to uh to Laura Pimentel so I hope tonight is an effective night because I want you be able to share with the board exactly what we as a school district need to do to continue the work so the first thing I think we need to do is we need to recognize that
031I'm always happy to help and advise but this part of my role is now kind of coming to an end and Tracy Beauchamp is here and she has taken over as the social studies coordinator for the district and um her luck that also means that she is going to be kind of taking over as the person who is responsible for uh effectively running the Civic seal piece so all roads lead to Tracy when it comes to the Seal of Civic Readiness um now the great part about Tracy and her experiences is her particular attention to detail is really unprecedented and one of the things that I think is going to be most important is the consistent messaging to all of the constituency groups the community outreach to profit organizations non-profit organizations political organizations inside the
032community to make those connections for our kids in order to be able to say we're not just taking the Civic seal in the school we're bringing it outside into the community and it is our responsibility as businesses as organizations as politicians that service the Three Village School District to embrace this work and to embrace our children and bring them in so they can get these experiences not just for the Civic seal but for themselves as individuals so they could be College and Career and Civic ready ultimately this comes back to kids and skills so what are the things that this is going to do it's going to prepare them for global citizenship it's going to allow them to recognize diversity and difference it's going to teach them hopefully kindness and inclusivity it's going to allow
033students to speak and to listen with perspective and point of view and last but most certainly not least My Hope Is that this allows students to model good effective citizenship but of course we can't talk about Civics we can't talk about citizenship kindness and compassion unless we're talking about diversity equity and inclusion as well the two are not mutually exclusive they don't live separately they live together we don't teach kids about Civics and talk about all of those important traits when it comes to the Civic seal or civic responsibility taking action and being kind and compassionate and then pretend that diversity equity and inclusion doesn't exist and it's not an important part of what we need to teach our kids and our community we as a community have to stop thinking in the mindset of
034all of these acronyms we have to stop focusing on acronyms and we have to start focusing on what it means for kids and what does it mean for kids it means children knowing that they're being cared for that they're respected that they're allowed to maintain their dignity it means their emotional well-being and their academic success it means learning in safe inclusive and Equitable learning environments it means sensitivity to difference to social emotional and physical and intellectual needs it means worth belonging and respect so these are the working definitions that I've established that I'm going to be sharing well I've shared now but I'll be sharing with the Dei committee when we meet next Tuesday these definitions Focus just as much on schools and kids as they do the actual definitions of diversity equity and inclusion
035that you hear about in public space I want to focus this work not on what you hear on news media Outlets not what you read on social media I want to focus this work on kids in schools I want to focus diversity and difference I want to focus and embrace inclusivity and equity in the schools based on what are we doing for every child in the school to make them feel like this is a place where they are feeling warm and welcome and they are comfortable and if we can't do that then we're not really doing our jobs the way we're supposed to so I posed a question it's supposed to be compelling at this point time wise I hope it's compelling but here's the question how do we create build and reinforce a culture
036that allows every student to walk through our doors and feel like it's a place for them but here's the real question is there one parent in this community that doesn't care if their child Goes to School feeling safe comfortable or welcome that's the real question and that's the one place where we all have to begin that's our starting point because no matter how you feel about the definitions that surround diversity equity and inclusion if you don't want to take my definitions and value them that's fine but get into the mindset that this is about kids and there's not one parent out there no matter what Lane you drive in that doesn't want to put their kid on the bus or in the car and doesn't pray that their child has a safe comfortable learning experience
037every single day so our work has to take place and develop it has to grow both in and outside of school we have to recognize the diversity of every human being inclusive of race and ethnicity religion and gender physical and intellectual ableism and sexuality those are some of the markers that we use when we talk about diversity equity and inclusion but those are some markers those are not all of the markers the one consistent marker like I said before we have to learn to eliminate bias recognize perspective in various points of view we have to create a building and a classroom and school environment where students are comfortable speaking to and listening about various perspectives students have to learn to listen and the past few years have made a much more difficult for kids to
038interact and listen to each other we have to get back to that and how do we do that one of the most important ways is we have to assist and support staff to allow for these conversations in their classrooms and in their schools to take place teachers are wonderful practitioners they know kids they know content they know curriculum we have to give them the opportunities and the tools to continue to grow those safe spaces called classrooms where kids can actually use their voices to talk about what they believe and listen about to what other people believe because when they leave our safe space at Ward Melville High School and they go either to college or the military or to a job that safe space is gone and either kids are going to listen or they're
039not I hope that we prepare them and give them the tools to listen so we have some data and I won't get too deep into the Weeds on this because you have it in front of you some of it you've seen before but the data shows that as a district there are some things that have changed over the past 10 years and there are some things that remain somewhat consistent the one thing that we have to make sure never remains consistent the one thing we have to make sure always grows is our recognition of Social and emotional learning cultural responsive and sustaining education citizenship and content and instruction the numbers are the numbers but most importantly the kids are the kids and these slides show that our kids are all individuals with different experiences these
040questions this slide is taken off the hard work that the committee did last year in the student parent and staff survey we had a qualitative section which where all three groups were given the opportunity to give written feedback some of these questions are going to be our guiding points as we do our work and the Dei committee this year and they are good important but reflective causing questions so we have some highlights from last year and we continue to look at our goals for this coming year which have been somewhat established but will be solidified hopefully at our next meeting our first meeting which is next Tuesday I want to thank the board for the opportunity to speak I'm happy to answer any questions you might have but I hope that this has been informative
041for you and I look forward to working with uh everybody in the group as much as I can to make sure that the Civic uh Seal program gets off the ground and is successful for the district and for all the kids well we want to thank you for the wonderful presentation you've done very informative very thorough this is an extraordinarily important topic there will be literally hundreds of our students who would qualify for this seal as we move forward also your work with the Dei committee over the past several years has been invaluable so we're seeing us through some difficult times and leading the way with that committee we very much appreciate all of your time thank you and I would like to Second the Gratitude and also just ask on behalf of other parents
042who are maybe new to the district or curious ability to join the committee still at the building level yes building level and District level we have some people who uh particularly community members that have stepped off just by nature of the fact that their children have graduated but we want to welcome people to the committee and I know that last year we had about 60 people on the committee and while that is certainly a lot that's 60 wonderful voices that added some important uh value valuable perspective and points of view particularly the kids absolutely so absolutely thank you thank you thank you again well I think you did an outstanding job I really want to say congratulations on that from I'm telling you it was excellent I'm glad you mentioned the Seal of by literacy
043because to me when the district brought that in when Gary gallini worked on that that was a big big big plus students need to be aware of everything around them how this goes hand in hand with the Seal of Civic Readiness is phenomenal I mean because to know the people that we live with to know the community to know the world that's what it's all about for our kids so I'm so glad you jumped on the bedwagon with New York state to bring this seal to our district thank you thank you I thank you and Dr Scanlon is absolutely correct just by nature of the work that students do organically so I mean literally hundreds of our cohort students every year are going to qualify for this even if they don't know that they're qualifying
044for it my hope is that the majority of students have made the commitment that they want to do this because it's going to grow them in civic-mindedness so some will just get it and some will have really felt like they've earned something similarly to all the other seals but particularly the work on the Seal of by literacy so thank you all right excellent thank you again okay we're going to move on now to 6A Board of Education goals for 2022 2023 these were distributed at our last meeting um and we have had the opportunity to digest and discuss are there any further questions or comments about the goals for this year okay so do we want a motion to approve those at this time or um oh it's under the consent agenda it is okay
045so we'll Circle back to that thank you all right so Dr Scanlon foreign so a few months ago the Board of Education approved a new committee to be formed for strategic planning for the district um part of the reason behind this is that our district as we know it is changing dramatically um our enrollment is unfortunately still going down in the past 10 years we went from 7 400 students to as of today 5532. since June we are down 129 students so the the push outside of the district with the State education department that the curriculum the standards in the curriculum associate of the state are written in a pre-k through five six through eight and then 9 through 10 system we are one of only six remaining school districts in the state of New
046York to have the traditional model of a junior high school senior high school model so the committee itself that we're asking for the continue to form will be charged with looking at some of these issues so under the board committee formation policies which are the 22 16 and 2260 are board of education has the authority to set up a vetting process for the membership of the committee now the unions in the district get to select their members for the committee but the board sets up the process for other members of the community to join so one of the things We'll be asking this evening is for the board to consider what would they like the application and vetting process to look like for the parent and Community membership so just to give you a sense
047what the community structure was this was in The Proposal at the uh that was approved in July there will be a governing committee representative of the four four members from each of the groups listed here Community parents Administration teachers and students and then single representatives from all the other unions and units within the district the charge of the committee there's four areas that this committee will take a look at and again I want to emphasize because the rumor mill keeps kicking in about what's going on with this the decisions had already been made and that we're pursuing this that we've already made a decision where everything is going that is absolutely not the case nothing has been decided yet some of these may occur none of these may occur but it's important for us to
048at least not fear having the discussions anymore about these topics so the first area is the start time looking at our current start times in the district we are actually one of the earliest start times of any school district in all of Long Island second is uh now that the enrollment is decreasing we are actually seeing the availability for us to be able to move the ninth grade to the high school and out of the junior high schools they will fit and sadly if the enrollment continues to decline it will get even small over the next few years if we do not move the ninth grade to the high school with at least two three to four years we will have a high school of 1100 students so with just three grade levels there is
049also an opportunity to look at the sixth grade potentially moving to a junior high school model and the junior high school is becoming middle schools six seven and eight um the doing that and of itself will cause the next community that will next subcommittee come up which would be looking at our elementary school configuration do we maintain a pre-k through six model do we move to a pre-k through five model did we look at other structures other systems to have for the elementary level what that would look like do we reduce the number of elementary schools that we combine do we move towards the Princeton plan of having two intermediate schools and two primary schools and what would that mean if we did wind up looking at repurposing going to re-emphasize that term repurposing an
050elementary school not closing an elementary school we're not looking at this and the committee's work will be to look at the impact of that we have a number of wonderful programs in this District our Academy is growing by Leaps and Bounds it's actually growing out of its space we have some fabulous programs that other districts are envious of and would love to send their students here believe me we have a list of students that attend our special education programs for other districts our alternative education program with the academy we have a minimum of eight students right now in the academy where the tuition rate set by the non-resident tuition rate set by the state of New York is bringing eighty thousand dollars per student in Revenue but we have a waiting list of our own
051students for that program and we have a waiting list outside of the issue for that program so we definitely could accommodate more if we were in a larger location our arts program here throughout covert and even before districts were getting rid of Art and music in elementary schools Three Village expanded those programs The Three Village has were very robust theater arts program going to a theater arts program in Three Village a play here is like attending a Broadway show I think we have more lights than some Broadway theaters right Mr Carlson so and certainly is okay and the talent that our students possess imagine for a moment if we had our own School for the Arts in this District where our students would have not only the ability to be participating in the front end
052of the play by getting those parts and singing and Performing but also learning the backstage of those plays and learning what that looks like in the business end of those and we also have opportunities in other areas in growing areas within business and within Tech and other areas such as that in the district where we have opportunities for students to take look at different career paths not only going to college that there are multiple paths to being productive members of our community and society as Dr gold pointed out so those are the four areas when we look at the committee structure the governing committee will be in place the start time subcommittee would then go underneath that ninth grade positioning subcommittee sixth grade positioning subtle community and Elementary configuration subcommittee so the time frame we're
053looking at for this some of this will take a while this is not something that we can snap our fingers and do overnight there are some initiatives academic initiatives that we're going to be looking at through our program review that we could potentially have implemented for next year but as we cover those and start to research those we need to go out and investigate what other school districts have done and try to model that and adapt it to our needs in the district there's also expenses associated with those things so we hit the budgetary process these are things the board and the community will have to consider as we move forward some of those initiatives could be considering foreign language in the elementary schools returning house plans to the middle schools and and providing more
054supports for our students as we move through the after effects of covid in our in our community and in our country so what we're looking at here is for the fall of formation of this committee to research and investigate these concerns by January the first written report to the Board of Education in the spring continued research and investigation and by the late spring another written report the Board of Education with recommendations whatever the committee's decision if it is to move forward with some of these plans or it is to continue in our current configuration all that would be settled at that particular time and then we would allow for the next school year to be the transition year so families in the community and staff in the community can make preparations for whatever scheduled changes
055may be occurring and whatever configuration changes may happen we need that time for people to be able to adjust to anything that would go on so by the 2024-25 school year if any of the proposals are put forward to move ahead that's when they would be implemented so this is rather quick and overall might not seem that quick for some folks there are people that may have their children going out and we're literally looking forward to Something's changes but we need to make sure that the entire Community is aware and being informed and we're transparent with everything we're going around through we've met with a number of community organizations throughout the summer we're doing the PTSA tours of all the schools we've done the high school and Jelena soredi we did The Joint Council this
056morning so we'll be going out this is going to be repetitive I'm going to start to sound like my dad at Thanksgiving dinner telling stories over and over again but we're going to be going out there and letting everyone know what our plans are so there should be no accusations of lack of transparency in this regard everyone in this community will know what we're thinking what we're trying to move ahead with and again as I said these are discussions not decisions the Board of Education and the community will be able to be part of the process of this while the governing committee is limited in its number those subcommittees can take as many people as we can fit in a room for those discussions so we also we need to have students as part of
057this committee so Michael guess who you what you get to do now you want to be born you want to be president of the student government yes what you're on now so we need your your classmates all throughout the school district to be part of this as well because you're going to be the ones most impacted by any of these changes so any questions thank you very much all right moving on to our consent agenda item seven may I have a motion to consider these items second okay so we'll begin with the minutes of August 24th 2022 and next C approval of appointment of election workers for the Emma S Clark Memorial Library of vote MS germano those are the Suffolk County election workers that are hired to work for the MS Clark Library budget

061title uh from executive director of PPS to assistant to the superintendent for PPS and N is abolishing the position of uh Executive Director of Human Resources and secondary education and turning that into assistant to the superintendent for human resources keep going oh excellent oh um o is instructional um for your approval we have about 31 resignations the bizarre the majority of them are substitute teachers that have um fortunate enough to get jobs elsewhere so we lose them as Subs the appointment of what we discussed at a prior meeting the appointment of arjelina's Junior High School principal uh Billy Correo we're appointing the one nurse that is a replacement six teaching assistants and several teachers in addition we are for your approval the appointment of athletic supervision coaches lead teachers after school activities such as music
