001this is a special presentation from the Brighton Central School District Board of Education welcome to the Brighton Central School District Board of Education business meeting for Tuesday October 24th this meeting is called to order I am excited uh to tell everyone that we are beginning again with our Brighton Believers awards at the start of the meeting um this is for I think most of us on the board almost always our favorite part of the meeting to hear the great things that people in our community are doing so with that I'll turn it over to Dr mcgaan for tonight's winners thanks Mr Davis as you mentioned the bright believes Awards returns tonight great way to start off our meetings and for people that have a little bit of background it's the Brighton believes Council who selects

002nominees to receive the Brighton Believers awards for demonstrating the Brighton beliefs uh belief believer character traits of Integrity respect responsibility kindness and self-control the award winners are students teachers staff members parents coaches and community members and of course the nomination form is available at bcsd.org we'd encourage everybody in our community to nominate incredible people like those we have here tonight to be recognized I'd like to ask first uh that Jenny lenck come up please along with Mr Tappen and hiy kasuko as well you could come up the nominator come on right over here we could start with a round of [Applause] applause Jenny is a Council Rock teaching assistant nominated by Council Rock nurse Hy puko in June she wrote is lenck as our students know her is a true brighten believer though I have

003only worked for with her for one school year I amazed at how far above and beyond she goes to help the kids in her work Jenny was given the responsibility of being a onetoone Aid in a classroom with a diabetic student Jenny does not take this task light through the school year we have seen imense growth in the students she was paired with in dealing with his medical condition and all of the great things he does every day Kai great job by the way congratulations we're talking about you young man wonderful um as a school nurse it is on me to worry about what the different numbers on the charts mean and what to do to correct them it's an endless cycle of making sure you check consistently so you are sure not to miss

004things with Jenny I am never worried that someone isn't taking care of our student making sure he eats on time and has the supplies he needs on hand often times she is calling the nurse's office with a notification that we haven't received yet due to the lag from the students's personal tracker to one in the nurse's office she truly goes above and beyond to make sure the students needs are met and that everyone is on the same page we are truly blessed to have her hard work and dedication here at Council Rock Jenny thank you so much for being a brand believer thank you for all you've done for Kai but for the entire School environment congratulations [Applause] and before she runs off too quickly haey a round of applause for haly also for the

005nomination and for all that she did to work also with Kai we really appreciate that too so thank you appreciate and Karen Huber if you could come on up also and don't go anywhere Mr Tappen nominated by Dr Sasha ly Evans Sasha could you come up too please Kai and Olivia you look very proud and excited would you like also to come up come on up please join the party a counsel Rock nurse Karen Huber was nominated by Dr Sasha ly Evans and Lara Evans in June they wrote during a conversation with our son about his upcoming third grade placement he was overcome with emotions he was contemplating acceptance into a private school um and he was accepted in private school and they were thinking about placement what would make the most sense for Kai

006wanted to check in and get his thoughts about that and through an avalanche of Tears he asked what about Nurse Karen did I do a good invitation I tried very hard what about Nurse [Music] Karen uh we had remind him that regardless of the school he attends nurse Karen would no longer be his nurse but will likely remain in his life this is a testament to her to who nurse Caren is and to him as a child at counil Rock School when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes weeks before his sixth birthday while in kindergarten and at the time was participating in hybrid learning he went to school in person two days a week in a different school district and as we prepared full for fulltime first grade in the new District we had

007many reservations as soon as we met with Karen we were put at ease Karen is attentive and responsive she's like a bonus mom to Kai that's pretty awesome we do not worry while Kai is at school because he is in good hands their relationship is special he looks forward to going to school every day to see nurse Karen they typically begin their day with a heartwarming Embrace nurse Karen has shown a commitment to our child from his first year at counsil Rock she refused to miss a day of work during that first year because there were many concerns in care for Kai if you're unfamiliar with type 1 diabetes you may think that nurse Karen's are mostly uneventful but we want you to know they are both physically and mentally grueling she either sees Kai

008or calls his classroom on average seven times a day when things are quote unquote normal she also communicates with us as parents at least four times a day the days are always full just recently we learned that even while Kai is on the bus heading home nurse Karen monitors his blood sugar to make sure he is at a safe number until he arrives at home this is something that she doesn't have to do but chooses to do to care for him in way to go above and beyond her duties Karen has been proactive and reflective she plans ahead to ensure that Kai and other children have the support they require during her rare absence field trips or other events Karen will communicate with our family about any support she needs to care for Kai she

009continues to learn more about caring for a type 1 diabetic child and identifies ways that she can grow when you are a child with diabetes no two days are the same when caring for a child you have to learn to adjust and change at any moment many days are challenging but nurse Karen remains patient and willing to take the day as it comes her flexibility and compassion have meant so much to us and especially to Kai he feels heard and seen because of nurse Karen's willingness to acknowledge his personhood outside of his diabetes we cannot begin to convey what this small but impactful gesture has meant to us nurse Karen exudes all of the character traits of bright and beliefs in her work we value her respect Integrity self-control responsibility and kindness that she carries

010with her every day she is a nurse by title but overall an amazing individual who has helped to mold a future leader thank you [Applause] Karen thank you Jenny thank you Karen thank you uh Sasha and thank you hiy and thank you to the board for supporting this and to the Brighton Believers committee for giving us this opportunity thanks thank you um we're going to continue on with the meeting what I would say to our wonderful uh Brighton believer Award winners some of you may have homework Andor other work to do at home we absolutely welcome you to stay and hear about a lot of construction updates and principal reports but we also know you might have other things going on so thank you for being here tonight and again congratulations from the [Applause] board

011as is the case with every meeting we have the opportunity for public participation from anybody uh in our community who would like to ask a question or provide feedback seeing none we'll move on to approval of the agenda you all have received the uh agenda for tonight's meeting um gone through a number of changes thank you Kim for all the work you did on this do I have a motion to approve tonight's agenda so move moved by Karen second seconded by Carrie Lynn all those in favor I also we need to approve the minutes from our last meeting October 10th um you all have also had a chance to review those minutes do you have any edits changes or questions motion to approve the minutes as received so moved moved by Susan second seconded by

012Christina all those in favor I'll just not I abstained because I was not present at the meeting thank you um next up I'll make a brief notice that it doesn't look like we're at where we're normally at that's because tonight as part of our second leg of our annual road trip as Willie Nelson says on the road again we are at French Road given that we are at French Road it probably makes sense to hear from Tom Hall first and the high school [Music] updates I think you should sing it someday no no Karen objects let's see hopefully I won't mess this up okay good evening everybody Welcome to French Road fabulous school by the way continues to be but we are the high school and that's what we're gonna talk about right now um

013uh this picture was actually taken by a drone that was authorized to take this picture one of our um yearbook students Henry woringer uh is experimenting for the yearbook with taking some aerial photos of various places around the the building and caught I thought this was just an incredible picture that he caught and hopefully we'll be getting several more along the way and maybe even helping Rod loose to take a look at the roofs and things like that but he's all over it and does a great job our um open house in in the uh in September that was after our last board meeting we had a great showing of parents just the administrative staff um with our bruan taking some pictures we had Parents taking pictures with the Bruin it was just a lot

014of fun um and hopefully uh you know as we continue to get back after coid we have more and more parents coming into the building and you know our open house uh was pretty successful um we just wrapped up our annual exchange with our sister High School in modin Israel Mo high school and our Brighton School uh 10 students were with us uh from modin and from more and 10 students were with one of the Pittsburgh schools staying and of course um while they were here the the War Began between Hamas and and Israel um and I want to just say to the advisers Marin taplinger and Alba condar um this is them Niger falls on the US side uh they did a wonderful job the families coming together supporting the kids while they were

015here flights delayed wondering what was going on um in their own town they with relatives family friends and the horrible atrocities that took place um they made them feel as at home um as they could uh the kids were wonderful um you know this is an annual trip that we uh exchange that we've been doing for many years now um and when you think about all the things that they do while they're here um probably one of the bigest biggest things is just being with the host family and experiencing what it's like to live in Rochester in Brighton with a family um shadowing our students at the high school and attending classes tours they were volunteering they presented to numerous classes um went to Niger Falls Le were strong all the great things about what

016make Rochester wonderful um visiting several of the temples having shabbats dinners um celebrations Memorial art gallery and apple ping picking and of course the vigil um on that Sunday or Monday night and you know you look at this picture you can't really pick out Israeli students or our students just having fun you know wishing like this is the way it could be in the world um but just having fun laughing uh meals together um sharing uh meals and just a wonderful time and I just want to thank all of our hosts and our families for being so wonderful and caring during a very difficult time and making their trip as good as it was we also as as our Israeli students were actually here we had um 18 Spanish students arrive it's the first time

017we've had an exchange with a Spanish High School since the fall of 199 99 and we did it for one year and then it kind of fell apart we just haven't had a real exchange so this is the first year poo Maris uh in oovo Spain it's just Northwest of Madrid um our students who are here um the 18 students with our students did many similar activities as the Israeli students I'm here at Town Hall Bill mey met the police department toured the courts and talked about uh different offices and and government as is different from Spain um again the host family experiences unlike Germany and France and I think even for our Israeli students many of these Spanish students I think there were only three out of the 18 who've ever been to the

018United States so that is quite interesting and different from many of other exchanges who you know students are well traveled so they got a great time with their families we're going there in February with our students three days of shadowing with our students at the high school the strong U ofar tour the U ofar A lot of these kids are College Bound wicom farms and of course the Town Hall tour um always love selfies and this was the homecoming dance and I don't have a picture of the dance so this is our homecoming dance picture what a great week to be here through that kind of a celebration two advisers and several of the students they absolutely loved their experience here it was like living a movie in High School Musical um they just thought

019it was phenomenal speaking of homecoming 2023 uh the EXA council did a great job with our spirit wear during the week um costumes colors you name it the office we were a little more on the country side than the preppy uh you can see our two preppies kind of in this side Mr Lincoln and Miss Edwards but uh enjoyed that day um here was the pep rally that night we had a record around 650 kids we have 1,200 kids in the high school about 650 came out that night for the pep rally the Juniors really knocked it out out of the park with this light display with their phones everybody turned them on fun seniors um always with a lot of great spirit unfortunately the Freshman took first place for homecoming we didn't know that

020freshman became they were on fire this Freshman Class 2027 um were just in it to win it and they did everything really well winning contests winning um floats dances I mean they just knocked it out of the park so they're very excited to the sh grin of the seniors um dressing up for the football game pink was the color lots of spirit Bruins um we had our annual Club Fair um just prior to homecoming we have 65 active clubs um it's just like a college setting all the clubs were around students at the tables we had kids signing up who've never done clubs before it was open during fed classes periods four flax five and six and fed classes brought students down during the today um we had a lot of new students sign up

021and one of our goals this year is to get more kids involved in clubs and activities and sports and Miss Edwards put that together it was a great day also we took uh we've been doing this trip for the last couple years um we had two counselers and 13 students go out to the construction trades fair at the Fleet Center um they had um Iron Workers plumbers wellers electricians all on display giving out um information for kids who are interested in going into into the trades and we definitely need more students who are interested who want to go into the trades it's a phenomenal uh living that you can make and Alfred State University has a program as well and they even brought their heavy equipment which uh several of our students actually got to

022operate so that was pretty exciting and cool for them and I want to thank our counselors for taking our kids there then during you know this is the college time uh Miss Stern is running our office hours during the day this is maybe a a free a free period that these students had she's available on two or three days of the week throughout certain periods and she will work with any kids on their college application questions they have um financial aid you name it that's a great opportunity that uh we've been able to open with her position and finally just ending up our conference day on the 6th of October we've been talking about grading at Brighton High School since 2015 2016 and we've had numerous conferen days and this is part three where we're

023continuing our grading for Equity initiative um with our Feldman Reed um as we put together a mission statement several years ago grades need to be meaningful and Equitable accurately reflect student achievement our goal was about 80% of our student or faculty would read grading for Equity we're at 70% we're hoping more will continue to read it taking a lot of things from there and one of our big questions for the day was to talk about formative and summative assessment and that's where we spent the majority of our time learning together and uh I'll give more information when we do our updates on academic uh the priority area for academics and kind of where we are as a school but we're making some really good progress in a lot of wonderful conversations thanks to Dr Rio

024for giving us time on that day to do it our big year in town play is in uh this Friday Saturday come to BH chess 7:00 uh end of the market period is November 9th it's just around the corner and uh grades will be posted the 21st to 22nd this year on parent square and uh that'll be new for us so they will be coming out through parent Square uh sorry and our last one for Safety and Security one of the topics for tonight from our board priorities we have completed all of our evacuation drills and we've certainly revised a lot of our plans thanks to work from Teresa moer director security and safety our new shell document working through those we've updated our lockdown procedures we added a new uh we're trying two new

025Vape sensors in the girl the girls and boys bathrooms um it detects THC and nicotine Vapes which we both have um if people are yelling or Screaming or if there's aggression it can pick up on that and send us a text if kids are trying to mask the smell with cologne they can pick up that as well or if kids are trying to tamper with the units they can tell us that as well we've also added new speed bumps I want to thank Rob L for getting that those in place it's better than any stop sign to finally slow traffic down around the big areas of the high school it's been great again thanks to Teresa moer all you've done thank you thank you thank you you'll see this in many of our other presentations

026she's done a lot with our security guards training practices and uh just giving us another eye devoted to safety which has been phenomenal lots of activities coming up in October and November and on November 15th middle school high school are doing combined principal with the um meeting with the principal where we are working with Dr gasparino Who will be one of our guests to talk about vaping and it is Red Ribbon Week and we had a big presentation that this week so more to come any questions are you do you have any sense um Tom that you're seeing more or less vaping I mean do you or the team have any sense about there's been so much lately about the health and obviously Dr gasperino is also working on that I'm just curious what what

027the students are so the stats would say that from from 2017 to 2019 we we increased 12 percentage points from what kids reported in the youth risk survey from 17 to 19 then we did the 2021 survey after coid and pretty much the county said a lot of the data they didn't necessarily feel was reliable um The Vaping went quite a bit down but as far as what we were seeing it didn't seem to be that way or from what the kids were saying so we're really waiting we're doing the youth risk survey this month I'm really interested to see that data and what kids elf report I'm I'm saying that it's probably at least at the same L levels of 2019 uh that they were before so that's that's where I am right now

028with it thank you so along those same lines um did you see anything in the breakdown of the numbers of the ages of the kids that are leing because it just came on my radar screen because this is something that you know I'm seeing with some of the middle school kids that might that might sign I I think from the research that kids will will be having their first time experience around experience around 13 or 14 some maybe at the age of 12 but somewhere around that e8th nth grade year um and into the ninth grade and if they don't do it after 10th grade chances are they weren't going to do it uh so it is you know wrting kind of that early age bubble but I we're looking forward to the presentation and

029we're going to give parents some real helpful tips information and what they can do to maybe get some help which the U ofar has a new program um and it's starting up uh actually tomorrow tomorrow 3 Vape Escape for teenagers it's all on zoom and you can keep your camera off it's not for parents if for teens to sign up we promoted it I'm really curious to see how many kids show up from around the county not just Brighton awesome any other questions for uh Dr ho or Dr gasparino or Dr which is awesome that you're doing that we're looking forward to partnering with Dr gasperino and her her team they were fabulous met with Danielle and I about just a special session talk about this and gave us tons of great information materials to

030put the presentations together yeah it's wonderful looking forward to it I'll let you know how tomorrow goes we've got uh a lot of teenagers signed up and I've even got uh 20 adults who actually after they would like to talk so I might be doing adult sessions as well so it is definitely a problem so I'm glad Brighton's right ahead of things you know trying to nip it in the butt well then thank you I think in honor of uh crazy s will go to principal Tappen next yes I do wow cute wait is that is is that you Mr T wow pull your pants up the other like is a picture of Mr no so uh all right well thank you uh for having us so uh at Council Rock and I know at

03112 Corners uh we have three full bright scholar teachers um who are participating with three of our teachers um this is a meeting that we had with uh the overseer of the program but it is in partnership with University of Rochester um so up here we have Sangita with Wendy Elmer Kaiser at first grade Fatima who is here with Nicole urle at second grade and Alpa who is with Rebecca Rizzo and um I was able to visit each of their classrooms and so uh was the Fullbright kind of person who oversees the program but I think the next pages are the most important to me I certainly got emotional looking at them so this is a little a first grader who wore her um sorry to um because she knew that um the teacher was

032going to be wearing hers that day and then this was in uh Nicole's class where Fatima taught about her culture and help helped with the SC scarf wrapping and really this is the reason you know we've learned so much from them but our kids are seeing themselves um represented and then learning if if that is not who they are um so it's really amazing and we're really lucky they come every Tuesday um and we're thankful to our teachers uh including Nicole who's here who are hosting them but it's it's amazing first grade curriculum night we did a little bit of an experiment I think I told you about it we did have the parents working on habits of mind but the first grade teachers all presented together because they said we are doing everything kind

033of lock step um so they presented together about their curriculum um and it went over really well um I think the teachers loved it I hope the families loved it um we got some really great feedback about it so we'll be looking at is that a format that might work for for every grade level so Winnie our therapy dog is back at work um owned by Jill D Davis who is a music teacher and I caught this in the hallway again another emotional moment um the little boy in the orange um his parents let us know that he was really scared of dogs we asked you know Jill asked okay we can move Winnie if you want and they said no we'd actually like you to work with him to see if we can get

034over this fear so every day in the morning when whenn he came he became her special Helper and helped to walk her helped to feed her and is now in love with Winnie and has at least for at school has conquered that fear so again the power of um of Winnie and of therapy dogs kind of throughout the district so thanks to the board for approving um that program uh we had celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month from the middle of September through the middle of October although it's continuing um this is one example U Mrs pora's second grade class learned Spanish words and then created these posters coloring recognizing hysteric Hispanic Heritage Month and then translating different spots all around the building so uh Alban De Chicos and La bibla uh AUA so just having

035those all around to recognize um and the students were really proud of the research they were able to do but also spreading the message about Hispanic Heritage Month as you know it is Red Ribbon Week so today was silly sock day I don't usually just wear socks with my own pictures on them um tomorrow we'll be uh celebrating making healthy choices uh by wearing our Brighton believes gear or blue gold or white Thursday it's hats off to making healthy choices and then Friday following our dreams uh with pajama day and we did coordinate those with French Road so that parents weren't having to do two different um different dress up days because that can drive drive a family crazy uh yesterday was an incredible day we not only kicked off Red Ribbon Week but uh

036we welcomed Lisa weer who is an author uh she's written some adult or young adult book or young adult book that that has kind of become very popular but she also wrote uh out and about a tale of giving uh it's a beautiful story about Anonymous kindness spreading um perfect for Red Ribbon Week perfect for our Brighton believes uh she was incredible she was really impressed with our kids who sat and listened and offered their thoughts and opinions um in the picture on the right uh she did something I was like I don't know how that's going to go with all of us but it went beautifully um she spun a wheel to talk about what they could do with kindness at different areas so the neighborhood School the playground in their classroom at home

037and they offered those and as kids answered she passed a yarn that made a big web um and she talked about how everyone was affected by the kindness even the people who weren't touching it um they were enveloped by it and possibly got a great idea so it was a great visual for our kids and then thanks to the PTSA uh the Brighton education fund and the greater uh Jewish Federation of Rochester they all contributed to allowing us to have this and then when kids went back when classes went back after the assembly there was an anonymous bag there that was to celebrate a book Mitzvah um and there was a copy of the book there was uh kindness notes that the kids could fill out and give anonymously around school at home um and

038then a little bit of a treat a rugula treat um that they got to try um so it was a really beautiful day uh and great uh in this time just a reminder that our halfday parent teacher conferences are coming up uh they are listed there the first one is just around the corner uh Friday the 2nd of November uh and our procedures we dismiss at Council Rock at 11:30 each of those days so again do a you got to do a little math I know it's challenging but got to do a little math whenever we always pull out of our uh parking lot in the afternoon at 2:45 so if your child gets home at 3: that's a 15-minute ride we're going to be dismissing at 11:30 on those days so 15 minutes to

039the front you can have your second grader help you out if you're at home struggling that would be about 11:45 um so we are looking forward to having parents in the building uh talking about their children talking about uh the progress they've made and the hopes and dreams that they have for them for the year so uh as Dr Hall mentioned Safety and Security is kind of our Focus all of our fall evacuation drills are completed we have yet to schedule our two fall lockdown drills um we'll be doing those with Teresa Teresa moer this week we have fire safety plann so uh Brighton fire department will be in uh the building and in the uh the parking lot to share uh fire safety with all of our students and again we can't say enough

040about um how great miss Teresa Moser has done in helping us bring that important focus and taking that burden on with all of us um she's really helped with the continued training of of security guards and just looking at our practices that we have at Council Rock and asking us like why do you do this tell me more about this and poking holes in it that we haven't had from a different perspective so we appreciate everything she's been able to do lots of things coming up PTSA winter Drive is in progress now uh we're celebrating World OT day uh on Friday to thank our wonderful occupational therapists uh we have our fall costume parade on Halloween day 10:31 9:30 and 1:30 uh um and then picture retakes come up and then all those parent conference

041days questions off to a great start any questions for principal tap no thank you very much Danielle good evening let's see here it's not doing anything that's it that's my presentation good job great job well done best one I've ever given it's not mov it's not mov keep I think we're good now all righty so last month I talked to you about uh the start of Outdoor Ed and we wrapped it up right at the beginning of October this was team 63 um and this has become like a natural thing that's happening at TCMS like this welcoming line we just kind of naturally fall into it so this was team 63 as they were arriving to camp and all the teachers just kind of lined up and clapped and cheered them on as they came

042and um as always the coordinators of outdoor ad are the most amazing people and make for the most amazing experience um one of the greatest things this year is I would have to say that our parent participation and family participation was higher than I've seen it be um which really makes everything just go far more smoothly the kids you know feel more comfortable um it allows us to have everything staffed well to support all of the students and we had um probably in the past two years the best teacher show uh turnout as well so it was really great thank you for everybody and all the work that they do not only the coordinators but anom in our building to organize all the subs so teachers can be there trans ation all the work Lou

043for coming out and catching fish and touching worms and all of those things so um it was a great time for all and you know as always when you talk to students about TCMS what's their favorite experience it's OD hands down so great to be able to do that another year um some smiling pictures we had amazing weather all three days um the last day was almost 80 degrees it was it was super nice and great the tug OFW is always a a fun one making s'mores as well uh so this past month since September 15th through October 15th we celebrated Hispanic heritage month and each day on the morning show we um read some facts to the students and then we Pro provided follow-up resources for their email so every single day when they

044opened up their email they had links to a video to listen to like Spanish dialects around the world um a list of Cl classic Spanish songs that they could play the teachers loved that um we had a list uh Mrs uh Lambert in the library creates a whole display both uh digitally and in the library for students to access at all different levels so it went for the entire month every single day different topic different resource available to the students we also had our club and activity fair at the end of uh very end of September and I've said to you before that we're so proud to have over 30 different clubs at TCMS this year our teachers have been strategizing to make sure that we're um making them available to more students so we're

045not just doing clubs and activities after school we're offering many of them before school as well as you know the buses drop off to TCMS at about 710 7:15 at the latest first period doesn't start until 7:45 so it's a great time to get students involved in inter murals but also like today we had um the mindfulness Club was going on this morning tomorrow we have our culture and climate leadership team is meeting so um we're really making sure that we're trying to access seventh and eighth grade students and get them involved without them being or having to say well I have sports after school I can't participate so those are going and strong our modified sports are just about over I think yesterday perhaps was our last contest um we had great numbers to

046volleyball teams soccer team had well over 25 people on it uh just wonderful participation I think we had over 200 students sign up for Sports for the fall at T CMS and our football team went undefeated for the first time in a very very long time so kudos to them for solidifying that also as part of our Hispanic Heritage Month we have something new that we're doing each month it's called lit in the library and so a teacher is um finding a book that resonates particularly closely with them uh as much as possible lined up with uh National designation months and they're doing a book club so students have the ability to take the book out read it and then come for a discussion with uh the teachers and and whomever wants to attend during

047wi and this past month um Miss Martinez uh read frizzy and then discussed uh that in terms of her own life experience and so students were able to come and really connect with with her life as a student who she said you know had very frizzy hair growing up and what was it like for her so connecting her with the character and then connecting with the students they were able to do a Q&A um next month Mrs Forin is doing something around um Native American history month so a different teacher each month and it was a nice array of students that we had there so we're hopeful that that's something that takes off um on our conference day Miss Paddock and um J I almost called her Miss O'Brien um look at Meer wow I

048just was dating myself there and Miss Kramer went to the New York State Middle School Conference and they presented on our social emotional learning initiatives and the work that we're doing around that with wi so that was exciting for them to represent us we I re I wasn't even there and I received a lot of great feedback principles reaching out to me to ask if they could actually connect with Jen and um Betsy over the summer if they would come out and work with other schools and share some of the things that we've done so that was a nice little Kudos impat on our back for what we've what we've been able to do we uh tried really hard to be a part of the homecoming festivities this year so we um celebrated each theme

049day just like the high school did but then we also added a door decorating contest to the end of it and each class was each grade level was given a theme of one of the classes at the high school and and then we also had a mixed grade level home rooms were given um another one of the themes as well so you can see some of the doors that came together the students had to do it completely on their own the teachers were not allowed to help um and it was Hy at one point I made an announcement during when and I said teachers I just want to remind you you are not supposed to be helping and Chris Moni said Danielle I was literally on a ladder at that point right when you said

050that and and slowly walked down um but it was great it was very competitive the winning home rooms had uh breakfast with the principal on Friday they had um breakfast pizza and juice and all just got to hang out with each other and it was really wonderful lots of fun so we're looking forward to doing that again next year and then just a few more more things last week we had our first uh Monroe County Learning walk so Hilton Middle School is our partner so they came they sent about six teachers over to us to spend the day with us and then we sent six teachers over to them to go and spend the day with them teachers saw uh classrooms that were in the same curricular area that they work in but also others

051as well and then had a good like hour and a half just to meet with the principal and talk about all things relative to the building not only schedule but just culture and and things like that so um you know out of that we we took our teachers took some great ideas together away from that but their big ask was can we do this in our building like it's great to go out and see what other people are doing and take that back but we would love to have the time to even just see each other more so that's something that we'll work on after that we had um the tail end of the Spanish exchange students came in and spent a day with our students who were taking Spanish as well and did some

052great activities TCMS students were super excited to have them here we had our first activity night already and then we two are celebrating Red Ribbon Week today was uh band together against drugs so lots of good band T-shirts there were some pretty cool ones to see blueprint area you know I was thinking I don't I don't want to be redundant because everybody's talked about Teresa but sometimes people say like um you don't know what you have until it's gone and I really think in this situation we didn't know know what we didn't have until we have her you know like it's really amazing to see all the things that she's thinking about that we just can't at our levels think through um and the way she's able to coordinate efforts so it's it's it's just

053phenomenal to have her she's helped us with all of our uh protocols but definitely I think a huge area that we're seeing the impact in is the training that she's already doing with security staff in many different areas particularly around student engagement and approaching different students in different scenario scarios it's been really helpful at least at the middle school um we Contin we did our annual Dasa training and we are having our regular safety team meetings where we're doing tabletops too as well with Teresa to practice different scenarios um and we've really been working on increasing supervision after school and what that looks like for student athletes as well as on campus and lots of exciting things coming up we have our seventh grade Veterans Day assembly if anybody's able to come on the 9th

054it's right smack in the middle of the day I think it's about 12:00 uh so that will be a great day for us enl Thanksgiving 5:00 on the 16th is always a great thing to come to as well and of course our Musical and then before you know it we'll be in concert season any questions for Danielle great job I can't believe next week it's November y I know to think about Colleen our host yeah Colleen as you're walking up on behalf of the board thank you so much for the tour that we were able to take before we got started this evening got to see some of the work that's been completed and some of the work we would like yet to see completed uh when Colleen's done we're obviously going to walk right

055into the fres sort of facilities update from a couple of the folks over here so um again Colleen thanks very much for taking the time to show us around thank you for coming um uh as we walked through the building today we pointed out a couple of things that we can blow and grow in and we'll go over that with um Mr LMO and um Mr nobal in a little bit um but a little bit of what's happening at French Road one of the things I've been focusing on is just building culture within the building that's with faculty staff and with students um we kicked off October with a caramel apple Bar for our teachers it just was an opportunity where teachers could come together have a little snack and just start their day off

056in a positive way um they did a little gratitude activity with with me and um just put what they're grateful for here at school so we just put a little picture to show some of the areas that they're coming together um and looking at culture if you look at the top picture that's the group of our um Tas and our teaching assistants and um classroom AIDS as well as Mr Thomas he has been absolutely fabulous here um in Mrs Wheeler's absence he's greeting the kids on a high-f five Friday you'll find him in the cafeteria um working with kids and just laughing and talking to teachers all day long so I do have to do a nod to him for everything he's done for us since the start of the school year um We are

057continuing the high- five Friday tradition so we're grateful to have that kids look forward to it and um we even got Mrs moer over for that as well um but it's just a great way to start a Friday and kick the day kick the day off at the end of a week some of the things happening in the classrooms here at FES if you take a peek our kids are deep into the work of wit and wisdom um that's what we're using for ELA some of the teachers are working through the training you'll see kids on the floor working in small groups working working on Gary Sports looking at painting looking at writing um it's much more than just pen and paper um when they're in the classroom they're interacting they're on whiteboards in small

058groups they're doing things individually they're working on their devices so it's just been great Rich learning opportunities and I'm getting to learn all the different programs here at fro as well um as we take pictures and have kids explain their learning we've also had some opportunities to have some guests within the classrooms here at FES um the picture on the top left was was a little surprised we had a family that had a a cousin in town from the Netherlands who's a teacher so she said I'd love to come in and talk to the kids about school and the Netherlands and talk to the students so in the top left corner she's talking to the kids about the difference in schools between the two different countries so it was an unexpected surprise something we were

059able to do on short notice and it was thoroughly enjoyed with our fifth graders um in the middle I'm in there I've been working through every classroom just doing a read aloud just to get to know all the different kids the classrooms their teachers I I let the teachers pick from one to five books and and we do the book and then they let the kids ask whatever they like to ask of me so it's been a lot of fun having the kids get to know me as well um right now the big question is guessing my age so they're asking a lot of like silly questions trying to figure out decades and do some mathematical problems but it's been a lot of fun being able to be in the classroom and then over on

060the right we just concluded our Fire Safety Week um we had a gentleman from the bright and fire department with us he was in every classroom talking about fire safety he loves being in the building he was thrilled to be here every day so it was great having him here so a big thank you to the bright and fire department for that the music program at fres has been very very busy we started our before school um program and I just did a quick look at numbers we have about 200 students a little bit more in a combined um between the three groups of Orchestra the red and blue band and we have another 150 students between our fourth and fifth grade course so in the morning there's lots of cars passing through lots of

061kids engaged in the music program um and it's just been wonderful to hear them and see them at school so there's a couple little pictures of the past week or so uh clubs and activities is something else that's been very busy here at FES um in the top left corner you'll see a picture of our Bingo we've gone through our third grade bingo our fourth grade bingo and right now we're working on our fifth grade bingo believe it or not our fifth graders were filled in this room today um and we shifted right into here for the board meeting and I also wanted to highlight some of our other clubs we have our tree huggers club and that is the one on the bottom and is being run by Miss chai and Miss bucken be

062um and they're really excited about that they have 52 students that are part of the tree hugger Club so they've been able to divide the group into two just so they can make it more meaningful for the groups um they're working on connecting and building Community they're filling out interest inventories on what they'd like to do um and they're just excited to see what they want to do to be stewards of the earth so that's them outside meeting so we look forward to seeing what they'll do for the rest of the year on the top right you'll see our multiculture cultural club we have 45 students in Multicultural club which was another huge turnout um that is run by Miss Coy winkl and Mrs Vali um they're researching different countries learning about the cultures and

063working collaboratively to create projects and they're also inviting in different families to teach the students more about their home countries as well so they're very excited to be doing that and then finally we have our Rainbow Club right in the middle I believe we have another 40 or 50 students in that I missed that final number um and it's open to any students the lgbtqia+ community it could be families friends allies and they're focusing on connecting creating collaborating and taking action so this um we're just a couple pictures of what the kids have been doing before and after school um finally we are doing something as a school we are reading the book you'll see in the middle it's I am1 a book of action by Susan ver and it's illustrated by Peter Reynolds and

064it is a book about the power of actions with kids and that one little thing that a child could do can create peace and a positive action in the world in light of everything going on with Israel and a lot of the different areas that kids are at some kids have more understanding and less understanding than others based on you know what's happening in the homes which is fine so we're really focusing on peace and the power of what we can do to make the world a better place and we focused on um this book and if you step outside you'll see a bulletin board with a green paper and Post-its everywhere and kids are putting up their actions that they can do within their classroom within the school Community Within in their families within

065their neighborhoods things that they can do that will have a ripple effect um there's a quote in the book from Dal Lama just about how one Pebble will make its effect and ripple in the water and how it can turn into waves and all the reach different lands as well um we went into one classroom today and they were making uh connections to peace and words and how to make friendships and how to do it through pictures so it's really be taking on its own um meaning here at fra so if you have time today take a peek at our bulletin board on the way out and finally um you'll see a picture here miss moer is at the bottom she's joining us on high- five Friday and we're also um we're trying to look

066at some of the different safety plans as Danielle had mentioned a few minutes ago um one of the safety procedures we're looking at updating is our fire drill we're just working on building our capacity making it more efficient and looking at our accountability um right here you'll see some of our team leaders and captains helping with the new fire drill um and again we're just poking at what we're doing can we do things to make it more efficient um as of now we have done all of our fire drills and we've done half of our lockdown drills but we'll probably do another fire drill just because it is a new um procedure um Teresa's been fabulous she's been here weekly working on different things we're getting ready to roll out our blue light system you

067might hear some buzzing tonight in the hall they're cutting bu they're cutting the walls and putting all their things in right now so that'll be ready to roll in November um and then the other thing on um Safety and Security is we did update our drop off and pickup proced procedures at F this year we wanted to find a way that we're not signing parents in at the end of the day instead we're sending kids out to the parents' vehicles um we're still able to check IDs we're still able to do it in an efficient manner there is training for both faculty and families to get into the groove of what that drop off pickup processes but it's much safer no one's running in front of cars people pulling out they can just stay right

068in the parent pickup line um so that's been really welcomed once we got into the group um so that's pretty much what we're working on in the area of um safety and planning ahead and then activities coming up for the next few weeks we're going to finish up Bingo um we'll be doing our costume parade on Halloween with our third graders but all kids are welcome to join in costumes Mrs wheeler comes back in November we're excited to have her back and we'll have a little um overlap time with Mr Thomas as well so we'll be celebrating um both of them around next week and the week after on November 3rd we have our halfday parent teacher uh conferences Mr Thomas's last is the 9th and then we'll be kicking off at Tuesday weekend busy

069as always any questions for Colleen thank you and again thank you for the tour tonight Callie and hosting us we appreciate it problem you know actually our next four agenda items are all around construction but we're going to start since we're at uh French Road tonight with some combination of Lou Rob and John talking about where we're at where we're going some of the things we've got on the horizon we've got like three or four different projects in different phases across the four schools for this item our Focus will be French Road though hello good evening so thanks again for the opportunity to highlight what we've been able to achieve over these um last really five years and what we have planned for these really the next three or four years so I'm joined today

070by uh John noelli our director of buildings and grounds and he's going to go over um at least one slide that's going to show really where we capitalize on John's expertise is his eye for detail his eye for cleanliness creating productive safe learning spaces and I also have Mr Rob loose here who's going to talk about some of the mechanical improvements what we have been able to achieve and what we're planned because no one knows our mechanical systems in each of our buildings better than Rob does so I'm just so fortunate to have both of them with their institutional knowledge on our team and helping to construct you know the next generation of our schools and I assume someone's going to touch on the sort of emergency project we're undertaken right now that'll be touched

071on yes so just to um recap of what we've been able to achieve over these last several years we had starting with the 2017 facilities Improvement plan as you remember um bids it was a tough construction environment so we bid French Road separately so it got a little bit later start um in in that phase or in that construction project so was we weren't able to complete any work in the 2122 um but then we picked up work again in the 2223 phase so you can see the scope here certainly some of the highlights that we saw tonight on our tour our tour were the art and Music Room uh Renovations the library Renovations a lot of hbac improvements the roof so a lot of building um Building Systems uh that were addressed as part

072of the 2000 really building condition survey items we went back to that and one of the things uh really a legacy of um Marin when before she left was helping to design the playground she really led the uh Committee in designing that and again more hbac improvements with what Mr Davis referenced is the emergency boiler replacement and again our planning and for the capital projects we were able to build that in and again with Rob loc's leadership design that project and be able to U get that done before before the heating season I have in the next couple of slides just some U bullet points that were drafted by our mechanical engineers so it gives a little bit more information in detail about uh some of the HVAC improvements with the 2223 what's upcoming um

073starting in um the spring really really actually more towards the summer uh the gymnasium floor and wall improvements we're going to be U renovating the gymnasium the main gymnasium here and with that we'll be doing some HVAC upgrades uh and that will include air conditioning within the building so that'll help address some of the hvdc issues uh some the humidity that this uh that has plagued the school environment for uh for many years what we have uh the voters approved in May of 2023 was phase one of the 3 Capital project so you see the redesign of the front vestibule and if I just scan back up to this first you can see what we're trying to achieve here that the doll signage that's in the front of the building we really want to make

074this a bright spot for the continue to make this a bright spot for the community um so the exterior facade and then we're beginning to invest in modernization within the interior of the building in the corridors and I'm going to ask Mr noelli to to talk about that uh and to build kind of the new standard for um for this next gener generation uh and then heat pump Replacements uh Mr loose is going to touch on that what we're designing right now with our architect and engineer team is BAS two which we're hoping to um bring forth for the voters consideration in February of this year so the work that we're planning for at at French Road or uh site improvements and we'll talk about that in this presentation really looking at our site and

075the Bus Loop and the uh number of buses that we've haded needed to add over the last couple of years continued HVAC improvements classroom modern ation like we've seen it um in Council Rock and we've seen at the other two buildings uh and then kitchen renovations and Equipment uh some investment is there as well so with that I'll ask um Mr nelli to come up and and talk about what we're hoping to achieve in the um in the common spaces but then also in the in the classroom spaces John so as L said uh you know we've teamed up with SEI design to develop this matter ization plan uh we basically divided the building into three sections um we'll mainly be concentrating on heat pup replacement uh ventilation system upgrades new ceilings new lighting and

076new flooring uh also in the front vestibule we are going to um rework that area to make for more of a secure uh entry spot to make a make it safe for for the kids coming in and to keep um we'll also be uh this project when we first start everything is going to start on the Edgewood side and it's going to work its way around up to the main office a library area as the tour that we took today so these slides here they basically represent what the before and after could basically look like um so if you take the uh you look at the old uh ceilings and we replace those with the new uh modern acoustical ceilings we get rid of the old fluorescent lighting and drop in um uh energy efficient

077LED panels um all the old VCT Tile and carpeting will be removed and that'll all be replaced with uh LVL plank floor um you know at the end of the day with all of these projects we do we're trying to just make all of our buildings A A Cleaner uh looking better more uh energy efficient safer place for our students to to come to and learn every day um I will uh turn it over to Rob and he can talk about the mechanical if nobody has any questions for me uh some of you know me I'm Rob loose I'm the uh supervisor of the buildings grounds and uh oversight of uh the construction currently we've completed uh some of the projects we've put in a boiler and uh cooling tower on the East end of

078the building the '90s Edition um we actually went from two boilers in that section down to one um because they're so much more efficient um we are about 3/4 done with an emergency boiler installation those are the main boilers in this building um they are expecting to start them by Friday or Monday um that won't be all the cloth out and all the insulation and everything but we should be prepared for heat with with these improvements and then with the uh addition of the heat pumps starting to replace all the heat pumps which are well beyond their life expectancy um some of the heat pumps here are 30 years old their expectancy is 15 um they are that much more efficient we're also going to be adding uh additional Air Handlers to bring in more

079uh outside air not only is the Energy Efficiency going to um cut energy costs um and the efficiency if will help reduce our carbon footprint um which is very important to the environment and to our future um we're just going to continue to uh make these improvements just some more information on the heat pump replacement and now I would ask um Miss cagins to come up and really talk about her first first impressions as the building principal here and what she would like to achieve you know during her tenure here with uh with the district her first observations and and where where she'd like to go um a couple of these things were mentioned already earlier in the presentation um one of the big things we've been looking at is reconfiguring our front Bus Loop

080um we have about 27 buses that come in at the end of the day and we have room for about I got to check my number I think about 18 buses get on the first wave and about 15 20 minutes later we have the next wave of buses come in for kids so we are looking to find a way that we can get all the buses in at the same time to help with The Missle um one of the other things that we're looking at is renovating the exterior main entrance as mentioned before and also looking at some of the common area improvements again the flooring the lighting but more importantly in the classroom finding ways to update the classrooms to 21st Century Learning when you walk into the classrooms we have some rooms that

081have begun those Renovations have gotten the new furniture um where there's more collaborative grouping flexible seating um whiteboards all around the room ways that kids can get up and be learning on the walls instead of just at desks so when you walk through the building you can see a very different classroom between our 21st century goal that we have and the older traditional classroom so that's something we're hoping to update um our new custodian U Matt lasoski he's been amazing helping with getting all of our interior hardware and all of our locks updated so we're continuing to do that as well um we're also looking at hopefully getting a gross motor space some place where we can move around and do some more gross motor activities with the students um we do have some additional

082space in the old main entrance and that is also used as a main entrance for our fourth and fifth graders um in hope in time possibly creating more um space in our mental health Team Suite um that's an area that we sit and work with kids and we have a lot of different mental health providers that have been added on to the F staff over time so we do have some spaces we can grow into um and different things that we can do so we look forward to those updates as they come um only being in the building for three and a half four months I've got a very early lens on things so I'm going to continue to grow with those as I um work here at fuzz this year and then I just

083want to touch on and celebrate this area and this space right here this is the new playground I know we mentioned it um and we's planning with that it's just been a wonderful addition if you drive by here during the school day after school even this evening we had kids out there on their bikes at dusk um the weekends it is just a packed place for the community so has been absolutely wonderful um inclusive for all types of students and all students needs it's been great and um a huge thank you for the addition of a funds which will be coming in the near month or so just helping keep us safe here at school and then I mentioned before those learning spaces that we are striving for and I forgot about the slide my

084apologies but if you look at these pictures you'll see the flexible grouping um some of the things you're seeing here at the bottom corner kids are getting up and they're doing their math right there on the wall in vertical spaces which is great it's different on pencil and paper in workbooks and notebooks but they're learning they're trying to figure out different problem solving and they're up and moving around which should be celebrated you'll also see there's tile flooring in some of these classes with just an area rug instead of the old rugs that are in some of our other rooms lots of flexible seating sitting on the floor sitting at tables sitting at Cafe tables sitting on bunches so we're really excited about what's to come and I'm not sure um Mr Lio would you

085like me talk about the Bus Loop or you so again um you know hearing uh Miss kogan's first impression of that that's that's one of the things she immediately challenged us on WE we've got to have a better system than what's in the way the buses are lined up right now and kids traversing between the buses uh we think we can do better so I participated in a request for proposal for uh site engineer in landscape and architecture Services um one of the firms um who will be engaged by SE as a subcontractor this was their initial conceptu ual design of how we might be able to achieve that getting all the buses on the campus at once so there's uh a consistent drop off and arrival time um and so this is something that

086it could look like so part of what we're asking the board to consider tonight is taking the lead agency as the seeker and this um that will start the environmental review process for a conceptual plan like this beginning to notify agencies beginning to understand any environmental impacts that a design this is not the final proposal but this is just a conceptual what we could do with our site to be able to address that programmatic need so with that um I'll entertain any questions or any questions for for the team I I'll just make a couple quick comments I refer to it as fresh eyes Colleen you have fresh eyes so you haven't seen the school a lot so all your observations are very valuable sort of seeing it for the first time or as opposed

087to folks who have to walk through it a lot um Lou Rob used this a number of times in his presentation I think I heard John say it too but the things we're doing with regards to lighting updated heat pumps more efficient boilers it's not alike when you replace a 35-year-old refrigerator and bring another one in they tend to be much more efficient um I think Rob mentioned this we hear from a lot of students about what are we doing to reduce the school's carbon footprint and that's high school middle school even French Road sometimes we have some good answers for some of those students now to say our lighting is better shrinks our footprint the way we're Heating and Cooling the school which is a major source of energy major consumer of energy is

088a lot more efficient so that's shrinking our footprint so there's a lot of that stuff going on and I know that as a construction team we want to continue to identify that and quantify it because it's important the kids talk to us about it a lot as well so I think that's important last thing in regards to the slide Rob uh had up had a bunch of pictures I I'll give Rob credit Rob's a lot of the time in his team the ones crawling around behind dirty boilers and trying to find things or grabbing wires or hoses and trying trying to get them connected in spider Webby dark sort of places and we appreciate your and the team's work on all that stuff Rob so that the kids can stay heated or cooled depending on

089the temperature one of the things that Rob said that I really want to U highlight is he said that the estimated useful life of a lot of the mechanical equipment is 15 years and his team him and his team and our custodial team extends a useful of that having that Talent on staff to be able to do those break fixes in house to be able to extend the life of equipment and save the taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars uh over over the the course of that particular equipment's lifetime so again kudos to our entire um buildings and grounds team especially our Mechanical Services team questions good stuff thank you all very much next couple of approvals we've talked about in meetings and also in in emails as well the first up item number eight

090is approval of Professional Services contract um and construction management Services um questions in regard to that all part of you heard L talk about what we've been doing the last four or five years in in fres and what we got coming but that's taking place in all the schools quite frankly with what we're doing questions in regards to this approval motion to approve moved moved by car Lyn second seconded by Christina all those in favor I also up we've got approval of a change order for construction Management Services related to the 2022 2023 CIP You' had a chance to review those changes are there any questions motion to approve so moved moved by Karen second seconded by Susan all those in favor um the next up item number 10 is approval of the Seeker lead

091agency determination I'll have know Dr MCG wants to speak about this for little bit Seeker which is not how it's spelled it just be call a Seeker is a State Environmental Quality review act um it's a a state legislation um do you want to talk about this for a minute just on the agenda all you're doing tonight and for the community to know is is designating this agency as the lead agency in determining the um and conducting the environmental review and that's in advance of phase two of the project a phase two Capital project which we would plan right now and voting in February and that's really the Redevelopment of the property uh behind the high school so the grass fields parking lot area that involves quite a bit of environmental review uh that has

092to start now so that's not a proposal for the project that's not final decisions on the project that's nothing other than to prepare for that and propose it to the community you have to be designated as the lead agency just want to make sure that's clear to people um that work that's going to get done in front of the high school and next to the high school and as uh Dr mcgall pointed the LI bought wenton roads about the most traveled Road in Brighton except for maybe Elmwood so um we have to figure out what we want to do we have to do that in relation to the county and get approvals for any impacts to the environment and um we've also Al got the the whatever we do with the fields whether it's lighting

093or turf or any of those things so this will be very important we expect to have this out in February for a vote we don't have a plan yet as part our discussions in the past so this isn't approval of a plan as Dr mcgan said it's so that we can get going on the planning and be the lead Agency for the plan we'll do a lot of communicating with this community because of the visibility of this project and the potential for a new light a relocated light or or or something else so um questions with regard to the Seeker uh motion to approve the Seeker lead agency determination as described in the documentation you all received so moved moved by Susan second seconded by Karen all those in favor next stop is our reports

094as always we have Financial reports um for July and August that require approval you've had a chance to review those any questions for Lou or any of the team um motion to approve the financial reports for July and August so moved moved by Karen second second by Christina all those in favor do we I can't remember do we approve the Personnel agenda or or do we just review it uh you do in the consent agenda it's in the it's here in our reports that's fine it's in two places that's fine okay just eliminate that I'll do that one okay so we'll do that one we'll do it in the consent agenda do it that way okay perfect uh yes thank you Leila hi okay firstly for clubs we had an amazing Club Fair the end

095of September and the BHS drama club held an acting workshop at the beginning of October our Red Cross Club held a blood drive on the 7th and our school Publications so yearbook trapezoid and Galaxy magazine all attended espa which is a conference for high school Publications about how to improve their writing their Outreach to students um lastly for clubs Key Club is currently holding a fundraiser for Bethany House and they're Gathering hatching product donations as for sports fall sports are wrapping up and rever teams are off the sectionals basketball held its preseason meeting for high schoolers just the other day and many of our cross country athletes qualified for and attended an Invitational in mat in Manhattan the weekend of the 14th executive Council wrapped up homecoming things with amazing attendance at both the pep

096rally and sports assembly and over 300 attendees at the homecoming dance and in other news it was red wh week so students watch an informative video about vaping just the other day wonderful thank you uh Board of Education we'll first start with the Monroe County School Board Association uh committees there are three Labor Relations is listed first here that's mine our meeting is actually tomorrow it's going to be in regards to cyber security and some of the things schools are doing to protect the quote virtual gate unquote so I'll update on that uh after the meeting information exchange uh that was me this month um information Exchange took place earlier in October um and they had the superintendent director of transportation and an assistant superintendent present on um electric school buses was the topic it's

097a Hot Topic right now in New York state as we are all charged currently with going all electric by 2035 and I think the big takeaway um points uh Gates Chilai has Acquired and have in operation five electric school buses right now um and so they shared their Journey with that um and all the things they didn't expect when they started to transition their Fleet to Electric um it's not just the bus you have to work closely with your power supplier you have to get your utility pads there's meters there's panels there's Chargers so there's a lot more infrastructure than just the buses so as we prepare to make that change in New York state um they are a school district that we can lean on with any questions great thank you uh legislative all

098right we met way back on dece I'm sorry October 4th uh we reviewed our current position papers we currently have 10 position papers that we distribute to the folks who represent us to help them understand the issues that we face when it comes to legislation that affects education in New York state um we made very few revisions to our current papers we did uh begin three new papers uh one of our papers is about electric School Bus and all the questions we have as we move to that transition um especially about the financial impact for school districts um we meet next week on the 1st and we'll begin to prepare for our legislative day of advocacy by Zoom we've moved that date I think from December 5th to December 11th we'll have two different sessions

099I encourage everybody to sign up for them um we should have our local Representatives on board to meet with us um as we talk about our priorities while they're moving into the budget season that's December 11th thank you more information from mon County School boards in your email should come right quick update um thank you car a quick update from bosis uh Mark kokanovich our former board president is our rep to the bosis board he sent a pretty complete update here I'll hit just a couple of items because I know we've got a lot yet to get to um uh received a presentation update on the Monro one standards basing based grading initiative excuse me um reviewed and discussed the current Monro one Capital Improvement project reviewed 2022 2023 financial statements and the report for

100their external auditor held a 10e reception celebrated Schoolboard recognition reviewed and accepted financial statements and uh actually Monroe one bosi superintendent Dan White provided testimony at two legislative hearings in Albany on behalf of the New York State Bose he's covering Civil Service systems and pensions and student access to higher educ tion programming while attending high school so a lot going on there and we're grateful for Mark being there on our behalf I'll also note that uh next Thursday November 2nd we will be doing a tour of the bosis Monro one bosis which is over off Beard Road at 8:15 in the morning and looking forward to that we have some students in that uh area as well so it'll be that'll be great uh other board members reports I'll start with you Carolin and we'll

101work this way down the table okay I um represented the board at the curriculum council meeting um on um October 12th it was our introductory meeting led by Dr Ellison Rio and Julie cop um huge group of Representatives the entire room was filled the boardroom was filled um not only with teachers and admins from every single building level but parents Community leaders board members it was a really great group of people we are charged with the task of looking at transfer goals this year really building off of what the curriculum council did last year around our transfer goals what we want that to look like K through 12 and really looking around the assessment piece and how we recognize um if we're accomplishing the transfer goal so Dr Rio I hope I did a good

102job recap I'm just going to give you the highlights okay because I have nine things on my list um District side I was able to attend the district um wide diversity equity and inclusion meeting and as well kicked off the 12 Corners Middle School school-based Equity team um as legislative co-chair for Menor County School boards I've been able to do some fascinating fascinating things we met with Regent hell last week um Adrien hell is the newest Regent for our region um we talked a lot about his work around Workforce Development um fascinating gentleman really excited to work with him in the future and then just yesterday we met with Maria Fernandez who is the new deputy secretary for education in New York state and we wanted to meet with her to talk about um our

103wants and needs as they come into budget season for state department for the state department to think about and um she commented a lot well there's a there'll be a deficit we heard the word deficit an awful lot um so it it should be interesting moving into budget season your Lou it's okay it's fine what what she said was I don't anticipate will make any Cuts but I don't think we can add anything but it was an interesting conversation because she is a former Board of Education member herself so I think that she has a very she UND she certainly understood our perspective which felt nice even if she kept saying the word deficit so and then the last fun thing I got to do I feel a little bit um maybe horn swoggled into

104this particular activity I was the I was the voting delegate to to nisa's New York State Schoolboard association's annual meeting where we voted on 52 different resolutions that would be that that have now become nisa's uh legislative priorities for this year eight hours on Zoom that was I think you told me four to midnight four to midnight but I hung on to The Bitter End because there are sorry I'm taking time tonight it's just a fascinating process 33 of those res proposed resolutions are approved by the resolutions committee and the rest are folks that wanted to have their resolutions uh approved some of them were fairly specious and so I felt like strongly like I should hold on to The Bitter End to keep the quorum to make sure that I voted our Brighton values

105against some specific resolutions uh but interesting work and I have to thank Mark kokanovich for taking that on for us for so many years I had no idea and thank you for doing it for us so the two of us who horn SW for next year the two of us who hor swoggled you yeah I found it fascinating and I'll do it again but boy but in all sincerity it's a lot of work you have a lot of different things going on on behalf of the community we appreciate that and that want to know was a particular slog since we didn't know what we were getting you into any more than you did so thank you for that appreciate that I really blame Mark for not telling oh yeah Mark's not here so I'm good

106let's blame Mark it's all good ex it uh to prevent this from turning into a similar 12 a.m. SL vog I will just say the other thing I did um was I had the honor and privilege with Karen to march in the homecoming parade to represent that board of education um and we did not have a sign so we held Dr Macwan in front of us so everyone would know who we were thank you Dr mcow it was pleasure getting a ride from you it was great yeah all right that's your report that was it okay um so let's see we had audit committee which Karen and Larry and I sit on with Lou and Dalia our district Treasurer and um we went over um we reviewed uh internal claims audit uh we looked at

107our annual financial statements for the year ending in June we reviewed corrective actions based on the audit um that ended in June and then the things that we approved tonight we had time to ask questions on that professional service contract proposal and the requested change order um so those meetings are always really a great learning experience for Me Karen and Larry have done it for several years so um it's a great place to ask questions and really um look at the amazing work that Lou and Dalia do on behalf of our district um and then I also want to mention that the end of this week is the New York State Schoolboard association's annual conference and our superintendent and our board president are presenting on board superintendent relations on Thursday that is correct on Thursday

108yes we'll see how it goes don't jinx us yeah we're very still won't do the hug we're excited to hear about that sign up for that Y and that's an annual conference that um board members around the state can attend and learn more about um things happening legislatively Buffalo this year different cities throughout each year cities all around the state so um you heard about audit I'll just quickly add on construction there's a ton of things going on and we're going to start community ating a lot with the community about the high school and the purchase land in the fields and uh Dan Goldman's going to help us do a great job with that I'll also say and I think Lou alluded to this a couple of times the number of times as we're working

109with contractors or our construction management partners then they'll say we can put that out to bid and Rob or joh say no we can do it we've got the expertise we've got people that can do it and the amount of money we save is significant because of the scales of those teams just taking things on going nope we can do that and they completed a large chunk or handled the complete of a large chunk of the front of the high school which looks so great now if you get a chance to go to the farmers market so just a great group of people Nicole thank you for your patience and you've got the best photographer on the team great pictures again in your report let's turn it over to you so much fun thank you

110for the opportunity to report do you have crazy socks on I do mine are just tie dye they're not too crazy that's all right all right I can't hold I can't measure up to Mr T I think we're getting you new socks from next yes maybe um so Council Rock Mrs grut uh posted two links to um two second grade classes performing songs one was this liance um second grade classing Council Rock School Song and then Mr CO's class singing um One Small Voice so I hope you got to see those um Mrs tsa's kindergarten class in the Friendship Garden um using our first habit of mind um so we alternate each year we do um every other year we do eight um so we started with Gathering data um through all of our senses

111so they did a beautiful job with that um to follow up on what uh Matt said about Hispanic Heritage Month um Mrs pora class um did research on different Hispanic authors and illustrators and then as they were reading they practiced words in context practice the Spanish words and then they created the posters they turned it into a book so hopefully got to check out the book of them telling you what their words were Mrs hodson's class um made character pumpkins which are actually on display outside of the library they're absolutely uh amazing um they have been learning about traits on the outside and the inside and they use pumpkin um pumpkins and materials which the have left to create them and made them come to life and they're really great um at fres Mrs Harp's

112third and fourth grade class classes um started to learn about the eclipse that'll happen in April in Rochester it will Passover Rochester um and then her fifth grade tech classes are researching marine species and they're going to build a large model of an ocean food web um she included that picture uh because they were particularly fascinated with the bioluminescent de fish um FES strings there's 92 students um in fourth grade instrumental music um 17 students who already started to already played 75 beginners fres R rented out 86 string instruments and they were just very excited that all the fourth graders have an opportunity to play and um you can see all the instruments lined up that's their amazing pictures the early morning rehearsals and then um Mr Meyers um I love this the anticipation of

113them getting ready to open up their clarinet um for the first time and start to go through them I I saw that this was also posted on Instagram but the third grade H Mrs tasto Mrs Simmons Mrs picado and Mrs Molton um they did a tie dying event so that once a month on I'm sorry yeah once a month fun Friday sometimes thrilling Thursday um they're going to celebrate by wearing their tie-dye shirts and show their school spirit and have um fun activi that they do but really to celebrate all their learning and accomplishments and some great photos of some tie dying going on I think my favorite is all of the kids lining up for the wipes from Mrs Simmons afterwards um at 12 Corners um at the end of September social studies teachers

114um went to a training hosted by Dr Don chitty um who is the director of education at the African-American Civil War Memorial Museum and was was also hosted by Gregory cook um they this was a grant through the Library of Congress and teachers learned best practices for using primary sources in conjunction with his documentary um invisible Warriors African-American women in World War II English 8 students started uh their overcoming barriers unit um they started their first core text of the Year looking at author's use of Illusion illusion and symbolism to develop the theme um you can see an amazing list of seventh and nth grade seventh through nth graders who were selected for junior high area all state which will be not this weekend but the weekend after these students were all uh competitors in

115at Sola Fest in May and then found out in August that they were chosen um lit in the library which Danielle already talked about with the graphic novel frizzy um and its great wonderful um picture of the kids all well of her too of Maria um posing but um learning about self-care um racial identity intergenerational trauma and her her daughter actually joined to share her thoughts and then the students made all those connections together awesome poster um uh the next page a shout out to Jamie pora because this is the first time I've ever had to look at how to pronounce certain words in AP chemistry um they're off to a great start so they started lab two which is volumetric analysis of a reaction between pottassium permanganate and oxy oxyc acid um they were

116trying to make yeah trying to make a solution as light pink as possible to get to the end point of titration um following the titra titration the students needed to break out and solve a complicated series of sto omry calculations um so yes thank you and I love all the smiles on the high schooler faces and what I really loved about these particular set of pictures was just tying them through to some of the younger kids just they're having a great time so learning all those complicated words um law and government Dr Hall has come um to part of the large group speakers and the Brighton police chief also came um Dan Wilson and Andy Conroy wanted to make sure that they um let you know how lucky they are to have the support um

117to be able to do this because once a cycle um they are able to get 100 students together in order to um have these uh speakers come and they're very proud of this program students in Mr Conor's College economics class had um Dr evensky who's a s Professor Meritus from Syracuse and the AU author of their textbook um he did a seminar with them a zoom seminar and um they got to ask questions uh talk about current events controversial issues as well as talk about uh future academic study we had a great time Brighton education fund is sponsoring a multicultural literature field trip to gandon um they're very excited to explore some of the Native American history in our area and last two English teachers at Brighton High School LED their ninth grade classes to
