i pledge allegiance for all because of scheduling issues today we took time to recognize the nurses who really were instrumental in helping us keep our schools open individually while they were working the buildings but i just wanted to make sure i thank them publicly all that they did this year both for the academic side sports setting up uh tour the buildings we have separate facilities now that we could have used if there was an emergency for purposes of caring for the students uh that they had a lot of hand in setting up and i greatly appreciate that and while they're not here to join me we're just gonna tonight is always a special meeting because we have the opportunity after spending time reviewing the candidates to confer tenure on our teachers who are up for
tenure we have a large number this year and we look forward to that and some of them are here with their families so we're excited about that so without further ado just as a reminder after uh roman numeral three approval of the minutes there's a 15-minute question period on the agenda thereafter if you have other questions that are pertinent to the board that's at the end and we ask you when you present questions or comments we don't use students names teachers names and we limit you to about two to three minutes each if we need to come back to you or if you have additional questions we can come back all right gordon you have super done this report and brigitte d primo is here uh to present our new fifth grade curriculum so let's
move right into that okay [Applause] [Music] i want to thank the board for having me here tonight to talk about the new social studies program um it is very exciting for me to not only join mount sinai but to get into work with the social studies framework so what i'd like to do is just kind of give you an overview of what the framework looks like so you can see how this program fits in so the social studies framework has students developing and understanding concepts and key ideas it is [Music] ideas [Music] [Applause] the framework it's a good way to show how to look at the framework and what you're thinking about when you're actually looking at the curriculum for each grade level do you think we are physiologically no pun intended but it emphasizes
the importance of student generating questions and inquiry-based learning which is what it's all about the unifying theme there are ten unifying themes in social studies um and that's across k-12 and i won't delve too deeply into them right now but it's things like individual development and cultural identity development movement time change uh geography humans and the environment so all of these unifying needs go under the heart of the anchorage a little bit you'll see how every chapter i say unit starts with some inquiry-based chapter for the students to think about that then follow through then there's the common core literacy standards and the social studies um and what practices and what this does is it bridges the literacy piece and the social studies what's nice about this is we already do columbia so we have
this literacy piece in place and it's just complemented by the social key ideas and conceptual understandings and content specifications across great levels so the actual program so this is i looked at a lot of different programs um and this is something that our teachers are familiar with it's on the savage platform um the teachers are already used to using that online platform but when i looked at the program i didn't base it off of that i said what would fit our needs and our teachers needs and our students needs and then what would be the best to teach through this framework it's a research-based student-centered instructional model that has a four-part structure students interact with content by connecting investigating synthesizing and demonstrating so at the end of each lesson and or unit they have demonstrated
an understanding not just regurgitated academic vocabulary and regurgitated dates but they really have a deep understanding and it culminates in this wonderful project every unit starts with a big question which is an inquiry-based question it's an introduction to the topic a jump start activity which uh activates the topic in amazing ways kind of like when i was teaching school when i was a lawyer they said you have to have some kind of hook in your lesson and so you have to come up with a way to put the kids this is that kind of advantage jump start actually then there's a quest activity another inquiry-based project that goes through the entire unit so while the students are learning the content they're also focused on doing this project and there are literacy support um there's literacy
support at each level which i'm going to show you in the next one here's an example of what i just explained to you so the topic is simple and the big question for that unit is what's worth fighting a very general big question but it's a good discussion so the kids can really get into a conversation about in your life right now what is worth fighting and they will have they will work together in school groups uh discuss ideas for a recess activities for your entire class after each group presents ideas to the classroom on the activity they like best and what was your group second to be chosen was the winning activities all of your classmates so they have a real discussion about okay who's just chosen why is it children is this the
one that you think would fit best is it worth fighting for your specific recess activity to be the one to win and then they go into the quest activity so how does culture influence music this is a musical game students research music that was enjoyed at the time of the civil war and why it was important these are all just pieces of a unit they're woven into the actual teaching of the continent the literacy support are level readers and so what i can see myself as associated doing or my teachers that i've seen are then creating small groups to have a research-based project they have these non-fiction level dreams and so freedom will be the below level then there's journey to freedom and pathways to freedom and you can break them up into what would
be really guided breathing it's a catholic work on a project [Music] this is just a short video from the company that just kind of gave you a screen [Music] micro interactive bridging high quality cross-curricular content flexibility like never before and hundreds of digital resources at the click of a button your students will love the active learning opportunities what is the world like the world is um [Music] you will love the engaging digital content and [Music] and if resources looking for flexible support options your search ends here whether you use active journals or online books you can engage and inspire your students in ways that work best for you and when you're teaching my world interactive you're never alone my status training has training resources alignment with your webinar options and convenient chat email support easy
to access whether you're in the classroom or on the go we know your time is precious [Music] teachers are already familiar with this platform and because of you know the combined learning environment that we had in our virtual learning they were using a lot of these resources being the nerd that i am i had to go on and take a look at the virtual interface and i actually was able to download it on my oculus and take a virtual field trip and it is the coolest thing so i you know hoping that they will use these resources and really delve into it with the kids and see what's available for them which so there's a big focus on cultural awareness and within this program which is another reason that i chose it um literacy support
around readers like i told you about some of the titles of supreme court women's history civil rights movement asian pacific american heroes i was before we even looked at purchasing this program [Music] that it was a broad-based focus on cultural environmental something else you're doing is a diversification of novel studies so it was a meeting that uh helped with the ela teaches regarding diversifying model studies so we have some new novels that are going to be introduced at the middle school level which we're really excited about those are some of them um which i'm sure a lot of you are familiar with um you know a world girl girls flight is amazing to talk about um with fighting for her education when the taliban and she really is just an unbelievable year heroin and it's
an amazing story i think students will be really amazing um teens is another one talks about slavery and esperanza rising is about a young girl esperanza who is in in thick a bit with in terms of being on a plantation and kind of looking at slavery and um we're in mexico with her mother at one point and there are there's this mexican camp that she goes to this and she's with her mother and they're struggling through just learning to live in that way um and it really tells the story through her eyes so you see the struggle um recently a few weeks ago we all all school districts in new york we see this initiative from new york state where they want us to do everything we can to move forward looking at diversity equity
and inclusion the theory behind this is a different way of teaching where they feel is not one single solitary answer to historical event basically they want now to teach through multiple perspectives not just one way multiple perspectives and go beyond the data and try to find out what is the root cause of this event why did it happen not just oh this happened in 1789 new york city what are the root causes of this effect so it's a little different way of looking at things and here's one perspective but you have to understand this perspective and again each board is expected to develop a mission statement and that's the actual language from the board of regents i can import measures to advance diversity equity inclusion promotes civics education and what they did they say the
region's approved policy statement diversity that expresses the board's expectations of all schools and institutions will adopt implement meaningful diversity equity inclusive policies and practices now what we've done we've already formed the committee uh our diversity committee district committee you can't really see it the members are listed there we have administrators we have directors we have a psychologist bps and we students will be represented in middle school and high school as well i'm excited to start meeting with that group to see what we can do within our schools to start to make this happen so we're ahead of the game right there but also with this whole theme uh bridget mentioned with the columbia reading program three to four years ago mr catherine contestants the reading material is very diverse very inclusive and that was that's
colombia's mission so we brought that in about four years ago they're telling us to do it now actually bridget uh brought in looked at the social studies method way before we got the initiative directive and so i feel by using this in fifth grade uh program that structure also puts us ahead of the game our committee is ready to go so ready to address this every district again in new york uh is challenged with addressing this initiative in the board of regents so i'm including it because we're going to hear more about it next month uh when the board actually looks at it and looks at adopting a safe and regarding but we have our committee we have curriculum and now we have to move it now that we have it in the elementary school
middle school we have to move it up to high school revisit a lot of the old book titles that we've been teaching for a long time some of which i had when i was a student and to bring with today's society so we have a lot to do we have a lot to look at but i think what we're doing this is one step of the social studies program uh addresses what the board readiness wants us to do okay so um along those lines i'm very excited about this this is i don't have my pen um but i was president of what was called the human awareness [Music] but it was um one of those clubs that i will never forget because it brought people from kids from everywhere together and sometimes adults would even
comment teachers would come and we would talk about topics that were important to us on cultural diversity and things that were you know upsetting to kids at that time or things that they were concerned about and so we're looking to address these issues um increasing tolerance cultural awareness and bias and will be starting the club follow the numerous clubs at the middle school grades six through eight to discuss this and provide education and prejudice reduction and it will really be similar to what i talked about the social studies program an inquiry-based type of club the kids will really be the driving force behind what this club becomes because i think that they have their own thoughts which are wonderful and they know what they need and so you know once we start to talk and
we introduce kind of different topics it's really up to them to then take the club kind of takes on its own life and we're looking for them to go down to the elementary school do some lessons with the elementary kids with read labs so i think it's a really exciting prospect for the middle school at the high school we have the anti-bias task force um so representatives from each group of stakeholders are brought together to assess issues pertaining to bias and areas of issues to focus on uh the group will take part in a variety of lessons and activities similar to that human awareness club some ideas for this group have included challenge day so the mission behind this is to ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to experience freedom of expression um and
here's another thing that's online which is the child abuse prevention i've spoken to high school administration about a little bit to see if maybe we can start that as well so we're looking at a whole variety of a great track to help kids understand each other and be more tolerant [Music] [Applause] um [Music] accepts the minutes of the may 11th 2021 public budget hearing regular meeting and the may 18 2021 annual budget so that board member will ask quickly i'll second that any comments all in favor indicate aye aye they wanna have questions on the agenda okay moving on to personnel and marie could you start us off with one and two [Music] my friends um as follows [Music] yes uh don't let don fool you we call him rob catwoman a few short years
ago rob came to us from challenging districts in new york city hiring a new principal i was looking for a principle focused on learning particularly a background in literacy which rob had he was basically a disciple of the columbia reading and writing program the creators of that program knew him by rob and um that was a bonus but also when i found out that he did um he taught his teachers math lessons as well when the common core was out meant a lot to me so i had strengths in math and ela in the principle and his philosophy is basically all teachers are teachers of reading which i know some of our members of the board feel strongly about wrote a lot of programs helped transition into columbia reading we had the columbia writing program
fontes and pinell we're level reading level reading libraries in our elementary school for our new math program envisioned full-day ctd and now that we've doing really well with our literacy we're looking at social studies and science programs as we move forward in the elementary school he's been a real assist for me and has worked very hard and has made some major changes in our elementary school congratulations rob [Applause] reading is key to all of this there was a time when you learned to read now all the way down to the kindergarten curriculum you're reading to learn and it's very important that our students have a strong basis in reading skills as they make their way up to the upper grades because what you learn in the elementary school is the basis for which you will
develop thereafter rob came to the district i interviewed him i'm not sure if he's ever going to forgive me for that but he really had a knowledge of level reading which is a very important piece of our reading program and i think he brought a lot of that knowledge to our district raising up what our standards were and i think it's an excellent addition to our staff and he's proven himself in that fashion so without further ado uh may i have a vote on rob catlin we're not quoting dawn tonight all in favor indicator now you can clap in marine number two tracy karen physical educational education [Music] would you like to say a few words about yeah [Music] um i first met tracy two years ago but she actually came to our district with
many years of physical education experience she taught in riverhead and longwood every time i got into his ed classroom for her the kids are engaged they're doing cooperative games skills and there's no kid that she doesn't care about that may be having difficulty that she encourages them to participate she's a wonderful teacher in the classroom and then she's also a role model because she's a coach for several of our junior varsity girls sports i think it's soccer lacrosse and basketball and if she could fit in another season i'm sure she would so tracy's in the back i believe so [Music] congratulations [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all those in favor of the cake all right all right you're like a floating edge certification status uh i didn't exactly understand the format and i think obviously you've said
the vote is the most important thing so i kind of prepared a uh a statement um i appreciate it first of all thank you for having us i think this is an important part of celebrating the learning that happens each day so i want to thank the board for doing this i know that i'm going to personally miss the uh little danishes and the uh the talking but uh we'll get it back next year um best wishes and thanks to mr kepler and mr picnitello for their service and support and welcome mrs pitka and mr stout as uh you know i wish you well as you begin your terms in july um i believe the nurses were supposed to be honored i know you came around today with some really nice flowers uh that was
very nice of the board to acknowledge the work of the nurses i just also want to say on the record wendy comer lisa bracken maria wasser our nurse's aides and susie kunzler another nurse's office aide whatever was asked of them they rose to the occasion from the anxiety of reopening determining who is in close contact and the difficult phone calls mandating quarantining all the way through the mandated sports testing where we were here at 6 30 in the morning sticking cotton up students noses um you know this was all making sure while we were still addressing the student non-copit issues which from diabetics to other issues that students encounter at this age you can imagine uh were still handled and i just really want to let them know that the most probably most impressive thing
was that they were able to put up my greek temper from time to time as uh things get frustrating around here um i cannot thank them enough and i hope they know how much i trust and appreciate them so i appreciate giving a couple minutes to say that in terms of the tenure candidates victoria d pierno sarah paredick sylvia franchezi and connor cecilla and although i'm not you know i'm kind of stuck because although i'm not formally recommending ms karen miss maloney miss moses and miss o'reilly i kind of grouped them all together again i hope you don't mind me kind of jumping around a little bit because i've worked with all of them um mrs moses i actually recommend it to mr catlin and if mr catlin could back me up here i actually
said when they were bringing the columbia reading i was going to be selfish and keep her at the middle school but i said her talents would be wasted so um you know all of these teachers i can wholeheartedly say that this is probably one of the strongest class of candidates that i've had the privilege of either working with or recommending for tenure the high school the high school candidates can attribute much of their growth to mr grebel's strong support of the probationary staff um one of the professional development programs that they were all involved was the instructional rounds and something i'm looking forward to mr primo facilitating next year in both the middle school and high school i can only imagine the leveling of anxiety they felt being a probationary teacher during a leadership change
followed by a pandemic mr grebel and i took the hiring and tenure process very seriously which is why these four now stand before you simply put they earned it in and out of the classroom i can go on and on but i am confident that they will continue to dedicate themselves to the robert m gravel junior mount sinai high school mission of preparing all students to be lifelong learners who respect and tolerate all walks of life i congratulate all of them on this important milestone and understand that only great things are to come so again sir i hope you don't mind but i kind of put it all together because as you said the vote is the most important thing and i think what their families want to hear so thank you very much for
the time and congratulations let's move on for any other comments or a vote for victoria all in favor aye [Music] [Applause] [Music] special education all the fundamentalization of the superintendent the board of education give out to 10 years attending special education dated 10 year 8 31 21 certification status see you say this time any comments from the board all in favor indicate hi now it's time to applaud now ed would we would you mind moving on to doing number five and nine to follow the department terrorists review number five sylvia franchise sylvia's social studies resolved on the recommendation of the superintendent the board of education here by france tenure as follows see sylvia frances in the junior area of social studies as of august 31st 2021 certification staff status is professional may have a second

first met her when she was 10 years old and a student in my fifth grade class so it's really kind of odd to be here standing now and recommending one of my students that i've had as fifth grade child brittany maloney was first hired as a kindergarten teacher at the elementary school i was the assistant principal down there um and mr rozelle and i went in and observed her it was the first year doing columbia writing and we walked out of that classroom and it's like that was the standard we had to set for all our teachers it was an amazing first year teacher lesson i will never forget then your girlfriend declined she was filling a leave replacement i believe at the middle school for reading and then that turned into a permanent physician
probationary position for reading ais i can't say enough great things about her her dedication to her work her kids um this year we had to reduce class size doing code in social distancing i repurposed her back to be a fifth grade teacher and it was like she was in heaven again being in the classroom and again did not miss a beat with uh learning the new curriculum that fifth graders were doing this year columbia writing included um i wish i could keep her in the classroom but she's got her position in reading ais i'm so happy that she's working building with us thank you for the time any further comments all in favor indicate on i [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] superintendent organization hereby grant's tenure and scholars name of employee lindsay moses tenure area
reading date of tenure 831-21 certification status professional or your brother done um first of all for myself thank you so much for the kind words before as a principal i heard a principal say once you feel guilty accepting praise because anything you accept praise for is really something you just ask someone else to do for you um which brings me to lindsay my first three years here lindsay was a reading specialist he brought in a new reading program as pete said she was perfect for it she was a shoulder for the teachers to cry on she had familiarity with the program probably literally some tears on lindsay schuller on the first couple years um when you say you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone this year as elizabeth said with coven we had
to ask some teachers to make some adjustments wendy went would be one of our best reading teachers to one of our best first grade teachers um and in her absence this year i have really realized how much she did for the reading department um there are so many things that i would say why did we do that [Music] elizabeth knows what was that now um i said it when i wrote her tenure recommendation um i don't think i'm being exaggerated by saying i don't think i'm here without lizzie moses so thank you so much lindsey for everything you've done over the past four years it certainly are intended um before we move on i'll take pete's queue i'll do two at once um morgan o'reilly is back there somewhere um i noticed when i was
looking over the agenda it says the official tenure title for morgan is library media specialist and it really hits home how librarians in 2021 are not just the person behind the desk who goes to the dewey decimal system and takes out the card when you go into the library when morgan's there they're doing steam projects the kids are doing research the kids are you know the kids are drawing writing reading um she's doing science stuff but it feels like a 21st century library when you go into mortgage room um and even this week at field day we have field day there's morgan out there with all the kids at field day she really is just an essential part of the community um when you're looking for somebody um you know recommend for tenure you're looking
for somebody who goes above and beyond and doesn't just you know punch out from 855 or 315 and that's morgan morgan's been amazing and i couldn't recommend her hire for tenure congratulations to lindsay and congratulations let's finish up lindsay any other comments from the board all in favor indicate congratulations [Music] we are moving on to morgan o'reilly number eight [Applause] uh upon the recommendations o'reilly i'm going to join in with what rob had to say there's not a lot that you don't see morgan o'reilly involved in this school district it doesn't define building it doesn't define title uh she's actively involved in participation with school-based organizations with volunteering uh she does it all and i think her joining our staff and her contribution to this district has been extraordinary and frankly has been something that
is really moved us forward maybe into the 21st century maybe beyond because she really excites kids to learn to read to be involved in media to do things outside of their comfort zone and i greatly appreciate that on behalf of the board with that and we have a vote all in favor indicate hi congratulations okay retirements and resignations any comments some of whom we believe surely missed we wish them well all in favor indicate i hi number two peter is [Music] uh wishing tori well and all of our clerical staff that the unsung heroes of these buildings they often are the ones who you speak with help you help our students just as an opportunity to congratulate tori who's going on to a full-time position uh thanking all of our clerical staff and tori for

that he's done for us i think it is well deserved and i am happy to recommend that to my colleagues on the board and i'm very thankful that he is willing to do that all those in favor any other comments all those in favor indicate uh do you want to say anything are you sure [Music] i uh i said it many times on the last few years that you know the like and i likened it myself to lou gehrig on my uh naming motherboard in 2000 um for that i feel like the luckiest man on the face of the earth to be a mount sinai and i still feel that way seven years later excuse me we have been through a lot this was uh 17 superintendents of suffolk county put in their papers to
retire this year and i can understand why but mount sinai is an extremely special place it is my hope that next year we are more of the normal mount sinai that we all know and love and that we move past a lot of this is covered guidelines and regulations and uh get on to the happier life that we all know so i will to end my career which that will make it at 53 years that i like to end it here normally the best we can thank you i have had the pleasure all this time i interviewed you uh i worked after contract and i worked with you very closely for all these years and every day i am honored to work with you i consider you my friend uh you put up with me
thank you and thank you so much for all you've done for this community universal free kindergarten program resolved upon the recommendation of the superintendent the board of education hereby awards the bid for professional services for a universal program for scoped educational service education services the lowest responsible bidder in the amount of six 183 dollars for the 2021-22 school year i have a second a second any comments uh maureen or gordon if you could give us a little thumbnail sketch of what will be available in the new year sure over the next few weeks first of all it's posted online applications we have openings for 34 four-year-olds it will be drawn from a lottery we have two classrooms in the elementary school and i believe looking at 9 30 to 2 30 at present with lunch
available scope is providing the services are very experienced in it they hire the licensed teachers they'll be communicating with parents basically what they need from our school district the classroom space they will use our nurses but other than that they do just about everything else and they've done it well we've looked all around and they took what our grant is from the state uh the state was very generous with districts who had pre-k in the past we've never had it they offered the money we thought we would give it a whirl so the uh it's not a ton of money but it will accommodate 34 students full day and i think it's the beginning perhaps we'll get more money next year as other districts have uh this year and expand our program it wasn't long
ago some of you remember that we had a half-day kindergarten program forever and we expanded that my second year here six years ago and now kind of makes sense that we go pre-k all the way up to 12th grade so it's great to see the expansion of the district i think it's going to be a good program something we can be proud of and i'm excited about having four-year-olds um and as rob cattle pointed out too his teachers are excited about it because if they can affect and look at the curriculum they might better prepare those students as they move up to kindergarten so that's what we're hoping it's exciting it's more things happening mount sinai thank you all those in favor indicate i i ann marie bid award interior upgrades [Music] hello for a
comment here this is from our uh pending projects we're upgrading our bathrooms so that they conform to ada standards and will be more accessible to any student who has a disability all those in favor aye aye pete capital reserve the capital reserve board reserve account not to receive five million dollars to be derived from the districts unassigned on balance you have a second place comment on that uh linda jensen is being very ambitious 5 million what we've done is created a fund an opening of a fund that allows us particularly if federal monies do come to this district as you may have read about news day there's no indication what that's going to be for but if there's opportunities for us to bring monies into the district our process over the years has been to

of the last three years steve has also been vice president i appreciate taking my call offering council each of them have volunteered their time they work tirelessly they do all kinds of things at different hours weekends all focused on what can we do better as a school district and i'd like to thank them for their service for the time they put in thank you sir and good luck to you and i look forward to our new colleagues paul and karen we look forward to seeing you in july the volunteer position can put in a lot of time and talk about what this district is so thank you questions if you have questions um if you would please come up to the mic we'd actually be able to hear you might have been easier to put
the mic [Applause] further um [Music] three years of early intervention a couple years in cpsc thank you thank you [Music] motivate [Music] a couple years ago we started a we had some listening sessions about the special education program and i was very hopeful i don't think things have really changed you all know that i think that my school district for years [Music] i had to request [Applause] [Music] is think that the district is going to do everything they can for a child with a special disability and i have found that not to make sure it's here i know i've shared with you before that my father's name is on the clackout he what purchased the property did this building and the middle schooler he starts his head when the school board congratulations on your son
thank you so as i'm sitting here and uh just thinking through everything which you know just first of all i'm just really here to say that i'm just frustrated and tired right and i found it really appropriate that we started a meeting with the new social studies agenda showing with the example lesson it was about the civil war but the question was you know going to be fighting for it and that's exactly what you're called credit for our children are kids right and i'll i know it has not been easy right you are here and i understand this voluntary time as well but you're not getting this but one of the reasons that we moved from outside precoded was and we heard such amazing things about the school district we wanted to fight for our
kids have a better education right and we did and finally got hit we moved in everything we heard was true everything was amazing right you had our trust of course okay right you can't plan for that but once again it felt good wow mount sinai other school districts kind of i guess so as school started opening up again and buzz start happening plants we started getting hearing about plants all the school districts and of course my friends in other districts like mount sinai you know i don't know but don't worry we got this i trust with them you know we're gonna do this but as the students started opening i don't know that's where i started i guess seeing different cracks seeing different things right and again i want to give breaks real quick we've
never done this before but i'm also i'm in business and i work for the community too and as we all have to do we all have to adjust right we can't do business today we can't so i understood so i still continue to give grace and and just little things started happening right like so every other school district reopening right like everyone's getting laptops great i'm like wow yeah [Music] and then something happened there and it it fell through and now now we're stuck in bb right now our school district's right and it was basically one thing after another and i know we put in a lot of money to put in like you know get our school safe and six feet apart and all that stuff but you know and seemingly there was a
plan although we never heard the plan but they are iron what worked in one school didn't work in another and we were fortunate to see that because we have one child in elementary one child in middle and one child at least and every time we want to raise concerns about one we've heard oh yeah everyone's doing this no they're not right and this school is not an absolute honor that teachers not and i respect our teachers so much but unfortunately like i had to adjust for my job i found it was very inconsistent from class to class in the beginning which caused a lot of frustration in the art show they would both they would all come home mentally but it was just i've never seen it before you know and i get it one
teacher who would be so scared of coco which ever we all are and i don't mean that but when you come up with their own rules right what started happening is every class it wasn't every school it was in every district it's every teacher and it just they started unraveling and started becoming a real problem um and i'm just i'm tired and because i find now that we are not being proactive i thought we were the district that plant make the city with plant a b c this happens we'll activate that that happens that's it like this it doesn't and that woman said it best we told the line and i mean look what's happening in our government today and you told the line when you're trying to you know it just it doesn't work
and we're tired our kids are being treated like political cause and you know if you know what the right thing to do you have my child back right when we go to work when we provide for our family i trust you to do the best you can for my kids i know you can't be perfect every day i get it i know you're human we all are but if things are getting a little out [Music] really i i guess what i'm just trying to say is here we want to know i know the government says one thing the department of health says another just something so parents are that's all i'm asking for and you know spend money in air conditioning set a new turf or track that doesn't even work that needs to be
rebuilt again like just some forethought and planning so i know my kids go back in september or next june there's another heat wave and if you have to wear masks or at least prepare that's all i'm saying so i do appreciate time gordon thank you so much you responded every single time we email or call you so i really do appreciate it i just really wish like this wasn't my only way to communicate with everybody else i really thank you thank you for your [Applause] time um i'm not scared of the virus i'm scared of the reaction to it and the heat and i understand they inherently and i don't like hearing that baby our governor is threatening funding and i don't i don't appreciate that i'm angry about it but what i'm asking the
board is don't just i think you know everybody wants did my way but i know that's not real i'm asking the lord may reach out to the community find out what the consensus is and really stand up for getting these kids back to home i think that they're suffering and they don't need to this is this is not their fight and it's not just the virus they're suffering another way but i'm an adult and i understand that everybody has an opinion so if you can reach out to the community maybe see where it's at and then if it is what the consensus of the other neighboring districts are if every district can get on board and rain try to bring in this government who i think became a vote and we all know that bullying
is not allowed at school so you guys have our back and thank you hello how are you hello [Music] um [Music] and this is important to me i really wanted our district that he believed um we had already done what the letter was asked this particular letter i'm aware of the letter so the cluster letter that went out from the superintendents we had already decided because we felt it was an extended but better time to allow an extended mastery than recess and physical education the weather's good we could be outside we had already proceeded in that direction we didn't need we didn't feel we needed permission so we would not join the request that was not what was discussed in their cluster meetings and what was already being achieved i just want to keep things
back okay [Music] yes [Music] they wanted to have what i thought was most important the opportunity to have outdoor events and outdoor uh massless events we had already planned them so what that letter said actually we had already achieved i don't know if it was a publicity thing or something else we had already decided based on our school size that we could hold a high school graduation within the criteria that's one class not four not a driver that was one part of the letter and we had already decided that mass breaks are appropriate therefore why not outside we provided outside cafeterias that they could sit outside why can't they have their masks outside where it was socially distant and appropriate we saw at field day they had to wear their masks when they played thunder
war because they would end up laying on each other couldn't keep them socially distant but pretty much everything else if you come by on the grounds outside the students have extended math grades so when you look at that letter i don't know what the genesis of it was but what they chose we were already involved in that and frankly had made that achievement we weren't asking permission so i don't want to be factional of what has been achieved [Music] and what we have already achieved okay so now let's fast forward now that we're coming to next year now with the possibility of mandatory investigations this is really my my big thing we seem to be the district that follows we're always following what everybody else does we need to see what everybody else does that
doesn't work now you're dealing with something that will literally i either have to reject my child with a vaccination [Music] when next year comes i don't want to wait until august and then decide looking around what everybody else is doing this is a big deal these are my children not just their education this is their health and i want to make sure that the community is being represented and what they feel because i feel like a lot of the times things will stream well the simplest answer is it needs to go to the politicians who make these decisions based on politics and not science i can't help you because they're the ones that wasn't these rules let me explain on last week last week we were working towards making new decisions new ways of doing
things and because of the disconnect between our own government they chose to just work against one another and now our hands are tough so we're stuck with a rule that we can't even adjust what we're doing forward is we are most hopeful that through all of the different mitigation processes that we are able to open a normal school without all of this other stuff suffolk county is the lowest in the downstates of vaccinations 58.6 nassau county westchester is above us putnam all those counties are above us frankly you may have a different opinion on vaccinations and mitigation is allowing us to return to a normal way of life what everyone else is doing i don't see what that has to do what we do will make sense but we have to follow the department of
health rules we have to follow what the state executive orders are and the venue that you may want to look at is what rules are they making because as a school district we've got rules that after two weeks contradict the rules we've got two weeks previous and we have to make our way through these things as best as we possibly can frankly we've done a great deal to make our students safe within a building that was never built so we added ventilation we did a lot of things that a lot of people didn't do we contacted trace we had a good example is i don't really want to say it probably but all of the tents that are outside everyone told us we're not allowed to do that so we were able to have students
eat outside so that they could have time outside to have their lunch without wearing masks we chose to find ways within the parameters they set that we could accommodate that and i think we did a pretty good job there were some things that we had to learn on the fly and i can't say that we did everything perfect we did our best but let's be realistic the rules are forced on us in some places we're not here to believe political law in the fall let's tell you what's going to happen what's going to happen is let's hope that our kids from walking in here never have to wear a mask never have to worry about this get sniffles just like they always did maybe we'll maybe it helps with fluid and then we can get
back to kids laughing kids eating together kids having a good time in education that's what the future [Music] and is stood up for what they believed in because 99 [Applause] and if we're going to just wait till september for this to happen then we're wasting our time we need forms for parents we are lucky to live in a community full of bright professional parents that are boys that are doctors that are smart people that have a lot of ideas and no one ever seems to want to hear them you know what we're not waiting for people inside our health with our children we did that there was a kid today that painted it next to my son he watched her hit the ground and someone take her what do we doing these are our children
you can't just sit there and say we're just going to do what we're told to do that's not good enough that's not good enough and you know what we need to start thinking now what's going to happen if cuomo said you know what everybody has to vaccinate their children to come to school because the results of that mean a lot of us are going to homeschool our children a lot of us are going to either have to give our children something that we wholeheartedly disagree with [Music] or maybe we should start discussing as a community as parents in a forum about what we should do or what the schools we do to work together in case the politicians decide for us well we actually look at any other questions [Applause] hello at um high school
um i want to start by saying your phone's phenomenal um i want to appreciate for mr entire student to helping that makes sense and i want to thank you guys for all the it's nice to see little things like that but people are happy it's a great time it was a sentence [Music] comes from the lack of communication and i think that a way to remedy that disconnect would be and this is just something considered having a student representative and i'm population and i really think that you know the bridge between you guys the administration the students and the parents there are other constructs around us that have a student representative you know a place to project these two of them i know that i've spoken to those student representatives they think it's a very
meaningful thing they think it's helpful and i really don't see a negative [Music] through a student rather than an adult i know you guys have a lot of work to do you guys have people government officials telling me what needs to be done i think hearing the voice of a student saying what we might want and just advocating for our needs i think it's a great idea when i was a kid i served as a student representative on school and that's a long time ago i think it's a great idea you know why we get some insight from someone like you a student it could be a circulating process we could work through with the principles bringing kids in because sometimes the adults don't know what's going on from your perspective and your perspective is
important and it's helpful to us to understand that so if you wouldn't mind uh leaving your name with mr premitaris i'd like to follow up i think it's a great idea we spent some time one of his normal times uh myself some of the other members would have lunch with each of the buildings living in elementary school and spent time sitting with some of the students in different periods and even that short period of time we learned enough and problems that were easily solved so thank you for your suggestion thank you for your reminder of it and i appreciate you stopping by thank you without anything further i'll take a motion to adjourn thank you all in favor all right thank you have a good evening
