we're good okay all right please stand i pledge of allegiance and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice [Music] okay all right so apologies for a light start of course technical difficulties as always for late start but we are on our way so any agenda changes um i did have a couple of changes to the personnel i did reporting a hard copy and highlighted two additional resignations and one non-instructional substitute okay thank you any public comments this evening not a full house but more people than we usually get so that's nice thank you for joining us we appreciate it any communications i do have one communication um it is to the community you'll record reportedly invited to attend the watertown city school district elementary art show
this event is hosted by roswell p flower memorial library with local art teachers and features k-6 from the district friday march 25th from five to seven um 229 washington street okay thank you all right moving on to board and staff reports and we're going to start with the wylie principal mrs maurer good evening everyone i'd just like to take the time to thank you all very much for all your support the board our district leaders and the faculty and staff at wonderful wiley it's been an interesting four years i when i look back at my admin degree and i was with my professors uh tom burns and darren safe and they said expect the unexpected and uh that could pretty much shapes up my four years at wonderful wiley so uh it's my honor to
share with you uh a little bit about our school and the amazing things some of the amazing things that happen there uh and you'll see that it's the people that are there that make these wonderful things happen for kids and i appreciate them so much so with that let the show begin okay you yes mm-hmm i'm just going to make one adjustment here for you miss lane while you're making that adjustment i know that i want to apologize because people that have tuned into the virtual stream cannot hear the video so we will have the video available on our website after so that people can go through and see the wonderful statements that our wiley students make this is an advanced setting the wonderful thing about wiley's reflection room is we concentrate on the positivity
and turning a behavior around by providing a safe space for students who have disconnected themselves from the school environment to reflect and make good in a positive way the reflection room helps students to understand that there are consequences to their negative behaviors and actions which they need to know in order to identify better options incidents will happen in any school setting and ours is no different the purpose of our reflection room has is to reduce the severity and frequency of incidents and empower students to self-reflect on those actions the reflection room team have procedures in place to ensure the appropriate support is provided for students and that following an incident student relationships are rebuilt and repaired to ensure a positive learning environment is maintained this is the basic principle of the reflection room students are
provided with a quiet space to complete work with from class and provide them an opportunity to improve their reading math and literary skills many students coming into the reflection room have different emotions that are not beneficial to learning following a period of reflection in a calm and non-judgmental environment students leave the reflection room ready to rejoin their class and engage in learning as a positive alternative to exclusion the reflection room experience maintains a belonging to the school community and a plan on which to repair fractured relationships in a safe and dignified manner mental health is a priority escape passes all of the staff and the students in wonderful wiley have an opportunity to use escape passes this escape pass is meant to help students and staff when they need a minute to change their brain
and reach to a positive level because we all have stresses and concerns at different times and sometimes we need a break from the environment that we're in these escape passes are used any time they're feeling these moments when students go to the reflection room they talk to mrs stakel and she gives them a menu mrs stakel will ask them to point to what they need so some students may need to use a fidget toy for five minutes some students would like to see the counselor miss phone for five minutes some people want to go talk to mrs maurer they're having some bullying or some incidents that are happening sometimes they want to see mr mintzer or miss rogie to report an incident that they have had or that they have done sometimes they just want
to sit quietly in the reflection room and sometimes they like to take a walk sometimes they want to just talk to mrs stakel they're able to do that and then they go back to class within the five minutes so they take five minutes and they walk away and they go back to class this helps readjust their minds and their framework to think i can do this i can get through this day and there are people here that are going to help me just like the students the staff are also given this so when the staff needs a minute when you're in a classroom full of 25 students and you're having a rough day you may call the office and say i just need a minute so someone from the office will go and cover for
the teacher we are proud to say that we are the first building in the district to do computer-based testing we had a simulation on january 11th and january 12th with much success there is a lot of prior planning on the administration part but when you do that the students and the teachers were successful in administrating this test there are a lot of differences with the assessment so it is different than paper there are login tickets there's a staggered schedule two to three minutes between classes the multiple accommodations that students need for students with disabilities those are on the chromebook new york state had hit some road bumps in previous years it seems that they have worked out those bumps because we were very successful in our simulation and everyone got right on it is easy
as the push of a button for collection of assessments it used to take two to three weeks to do this the collection of the assessments which does take away time from the administrative team of doing those assessments constructed responses can be done downloaded after the assessment and use for reflection for professional development which is a bonus of these assessments we will see how our students do and it was great to try it out and the district and the board will make that decision if that's the way we need to go but we're we were proud to be the ones to try it out please take a few minutes with us and view our wonderful wily world e-book the pto bought every classroom this year a kickball and fling ring thank you to our pto we'd
also like to thank jessica and glenna for bringing prizes to our students for our fun run this year [Music] the wonderful wiley students raised 18 791 dollars for wiley during the fun run that's the highest profit i've seen in years thank you to all our students and families a special thanks to glenna for all of her hard work before during and after the fun run to make this fundraiser successful glenna and her daughter in are in the photo right below more thanks to all our parents volunteers our pe teachers and our students for helping us make this fun run so successful just a reminder a pandemic is not just hard for adults it's also hard on kids please check on your children and talk to them about their struggles we have all survived our hardest
days so far thank you for being great families let us know if your family is in need of anything it takes a village to raise children we raise lifelong learners and responsible citizens in wonderful wiley [Music] on this next page we want to highlight our fabulous fifth graders these pictures are showing you math stations in fifth grade and these stations help to individualize instruction for every student these pictures are a combination of both science and art that makes learning fun [Music] students in fifth grade are also writing exemplar paragraphs at this point and how do people adapt to change or defend on their environment ask a fifth grader they can tell you [Music] some more highlights of our fabulous fifth graders we notice and wonder and write in fifth grade during ela instruction we even
do it on the wiley trails nature meets nurturing and lifelong learning we can't wait to get back on the trails [Music] our next page is going to highlight some of our sixth graders sixth grade going on a scavenger hunt they're finding evidence using good resources during their win time and these next pictures show us independent reading with beautiful calming music to start ela the right way more on our 6th graders the picture on the top left is starting the day right with our positivity project social emotional learning and learning positive character traits is how we stay positive even when times are difficult on the bottom right hand picture this is a real world experience using calculators with exponents in a sixth grade classroom [Music] on our next page we're providing windows and doors to students
through novels in ela we then have games reinforcing math fluency in sixth grade which makes learning fun [Music] our we belong survey was given by our counselor mrs phone probably in september october and as you can see our students really do feel like they belong the blue is strongly agree and the red is agree i hope that throughout this year and we will be doing another survey soon that you could see that those students that did not feel they may have disagreed or strongly disagreed we hope that we have turned the corner with them and made sure that every student feels like they belong having fun while learning is what we strive to do here at wiley world our ticket train and train tickets are shown on the next page our students get rewarded for
showing positive character traits [Music] a special thank you to our clerical and security staff who work day and night to keep wiley running like a well-oiled machine our main office mrs lotrick miss rachel and miss nichols our security desk mrs doopy thank you so much for all you do for all of us every single day [Music] and finally something very exciting is our amazon future engineer program acceptance we were accepted so that all of our students are able to take part in project stem both fifth and sixth grade and they are doing this with mrs hinckley in the library and she is getting started this month we are so very excited i'd like to thank our partners liberty partnership program the y jefferson community college our 4-h after-school program with 4-h after school they have
been a tremendous help to our students at wiley not only do they help out of school when they go to these after-school activities that really enrich their lives they also sometimes help even during the school day they collaborate with me and we think outside the box a lot i appreciate everything they do if you still have not signed up for parent portal on the next ebook or the past ebook you can sign up right here this gives you the opportunity as a parent to look at real time grades for your student so that you don't wait for progress reports or you don't wait for report cards you can see it in real time it is very very helpful take it from me as a parent of three children in the district we love our wonderful
wily world families it was so great to have all the families back in person for parent-teacher conferences and we are so thankful for the collaboration of parents to talk about their child we love your children and we love that you partake in this conference thank you our wish for next year from the board and from our district leaders is that we have less students on each bus so that that minimizes the discipline referrals on buses and the behaviors we really want kids to have a nice start to the school day they love coming here they're smiling but sometimes the bus ride is hard when there are so many children on a bus and sometimes there are behaviors please help us out with that the other ask that we're asking you for is collaboration time within
the schedule and i will work my hardest with teachers to really try to figure out how we do that i would appreciate your support on that also it's important so i just want to thank you all and as you can see there was a theme uh and i hope that our staff and our teachers heard how much the kids love them and all their work their hard work blood sweat and tears i would say it pays off when you see the kids and how they feel about wonderful wiley i actually have a couple questions so for the um computer-based testing i i noticed you did did math right do you have any concerns with ela and kids being able to type for extended responses i think that's always a concern to be honest uh i
think some kids like typing better and some kids like writing better so it's kind of i think that's why we have to look at the data to see you know did it affect our grades or not you know kind of looking at past years when we didn't do computer based testing to see if it changed so i mean that's always a worry my other question to what sorts of things are you seeing on the bus that would prompt you to want to have fewer kids what's the discipline issues you've been encountering i would say there's a lot of yelling sometimes walking up and down the aisles taunting so the bus driver is not able to walk you know really do anything at that point bus driver has to focus so it's a safety concern in
my opinion when there are kids that are they're just almost out of control i guess is what i can say is sometimes their behaviors are loud and screaming and yelling and etc so i think it makes it hard to come into school that way and we have tried to know some bus saves on certain buses but it just seems to be the number of students on the bus all right thank you don't have any questions for mrs howard thank you thank you thank you hey policy committee reporter yeah so the committee met tonight we only had a handful of policies to review and aside from minor grammatical changes they'll have anything else to report okay well i'd like to thank mrs maurer and her family although they've just walked out of the room i'm a
part of them and the staff that was here tonight um and the voice that you've heard in the video in addition to mrs maurer was the intern um olivia roman who spends part of her day at the high school teaching and then she spends part of the day here with mrs maurer i'd also like to thank mrs maurer for all of the things that you shared it was nice seeing the students uh participate and again during that that one video that's when parents or the people who are listening couldn't hear so we'll make sure we get that out after that everything else people were able to hear so i also want to commend you like on the escape passes not only for students but for your staff i think that's an amazing idea um thank
you for venturing out trying out the computer-based testing and i know that you will love that as you go forward because the amount of work as an administrator and because i was the former wily principal i know how much time it takes to prepare all of those tests when they're in paper format and then to make sure that they're all back in a certain order i think that if things go well and we're able to move forward with the computer-based testing from the administrative aspect it will be a whole lot easier and also less worry about tests that are missing um and makeup tests and such so kudos to you for that as well i just want to remind everybody that this week is kindness week we've already had two days tomorrow is give a
compliment day say something kind to at least five people thursday is thank you for making a difference day thank to people in your life that have made a difference and then on friday it's doing team kindness where your favorite sport shirt or jersey i have several updates from things that have happened in the district the water main break at sherman was fixed quickly shout out to all the sherman staff students families mike ranjean brian arias and his team and then speaking of water we had a few leaks at north and wiley within the past week this morning we had an issue with a coil at the high school which wasn't a heating coil it actually had to do with the air conditioning and thank goodness we didn't need air conditioning today so we have a
little time to repair that um the cold weather the next few days will help us but by mid week especially maybe thursday it's going to be in the mid 50s so we'll just have to keep ahead of those uh water leaks in the roof and keep an eye on those last night we had the alarm go off at north one of our after school programs they were making kale chips in the oven and they caught on fire and so there was a little problem when the alarms went off and i learned this actually back when i was uh an intern at case middle school and mr whitney the principal at the time i was in making popcorn in the cafeteria and i burned the popcorn and i set the alarm off and so like you
know when you're at home and you burn things you take a towel around a smoke detector and mr whitney said mrs labar that is not going to work the fire trucks are on their way and we all have to clear the building because there's a fine that goes along if you don't clear the building so that's what happened last night the alarm went off everybody cleared the building but there was a little miscommunication between the alarm setting and uh the call going into the fire department so with it being sub-zero weather last night we had students at north not only in the cornell program but we had basketball players that were dressed appropriately for playing basketball in the gym in their shorts but they waited outside for over 20 minutes for the fire truck to
show up so we are having that system all checked but we will also in addition to that next week during february break have all of the systems tested and checked just to make sure because we've done a lot of things in the district with wiring throughout the past several years with our smart schools project so those that just need to be updated and check to make sure that everything is in working order last week two weeks ago our covic cases dropped to 71. last week it was 44. tina will give you an update you know usually on monday tuesday or in the 50 plus range on a given day so she'll have some exciting news to share with you the numbers are going in the right direction and because the numbers are going in the
right direction we've activated what we'll call our moving forward plan and we've started making some small changes within the schools things like teachers that have carpets in their classrooms some carpets are coming back in purposeful play we're looking at that a little more closely but in addition to the small changes we're making within the school we'll be looking at after school activities so as of today we're lifting the spectator limit for athletics and extracurricular activities at this time the mass mandate is still in effect and so for right now you know we're going to entertain the idea of more spectators but we're going to respectfully ask that you follow the mask mandate until that has changed and we're hopeful that that will change in the near future but as we sit around and watch events
that are happening in the world i use the super bowl for example and we have a huge gathering of people getting together it's time for us to start moving forward in the school setting as well so i'm really excited to start to move forward and we do understand as we move forward that not everyone is ready to move forward at the same pace and so we'll have to continue to respect each other's differences and show empathy toward one another you know and it's not about who's right or who's wrong it's about just following the rules and thinking about you know this week in a kindness week we have to move forward with a great deal of kindness i'd like to thank lori for sitting in with us on the wiley assistant principal interviews and later
this evening you'll be approving that appointment so thank you for that it's really nice to have a board member as part of that committee i'd also like to thank susie for sitting in with us on the diversity equity inclusion and belonging committee we did some work last week and in addition all of that i'd like to thank all of you for moving forward with a diversity equity and inclusion board policy that really sets the focus for the work ahead of us so thank you for that um stacy and i met with chad fairchild last week to discuss an rotc program and then we have another meeting in march set up with the high school counselors and our military connection with fort drum wendy o'sullivan stacy and i also met with bill bowman to discuss our
pivot services for next year and we're very happy with the services that are in place now and will continue to have those services in place for next year i really want to highlight some sports because i haven't been able to do that in a long time we have a lot of celebrations here like to congratulate our voice swim team and our boys basketball team for being frontier league champions they are both advancing to sectionals as well as our girls basketball team there was like an open seating position for our girls to be able to move forward as well congratulations to our wrestlers kane roberts and jack club for winning section three in their weight class they are heading to states on february 24th and 25th i'm also very proud of our cheerleading team having a
great finish last weekend placing 13th out of 22 teams i'll share that video with you a share with me by one of the cheerleading coaches so i'll pass that on or make sure that that's on our website the girls did an incredible job and this evening our ice hockey team is playing in a sectional game so we have a lot going on in the area of sports right now one of the things that i talked about at one of our last meetings is that our football team will not be participating in section 10 next year they're moving back to section three we had somewhat of a discussion about independent versus regular section three and there were a lot of meetings within the section three the past couple of weeks and more schools are not going
to be participating in independent they're going to move forward in the regular section three so although we thought we were going to move with the independent league we will be moving forward with regular section 3 and that will give us the opportunity to advance on to sectionals and state play if we get that far but if you're in the independent league there are a lot of stipulations with independent league there's no friday night play and there were there was a long laundry list of things that were probably not beneficial for our students to be part of that we've gone back and forth but when you look at the overall what's best for our students we are going to go back into a section three regular section as you know on an annual basis we update
the code of conduct and ask for public feedback for 30 days that'll be coming up probably around may but this year we're giving our students a voice in their code of conduct this morning at 7 30 stacey and i met with nine students from case getting their feedback on the dress code and when you look at the length of the document of the code of conduct and and how long it is and for people to really read into it where what we're hoping to do is to create a one to two page document that's user friendly for students and their parents to look at and understand what's in the code of conduct of course we're required to have the lengthier version with everything in it but just a summary with a one to two page
document great meeting this morning with our students one of the things that they brought up this morning was when talking about the dress code it there's a statement in there it's kind of suggests that if a student is in violation of the dress code they could potentially be suspended from school for disrupting the educational process and so these seventh and eighth graders suggested that well when you're not in school that's interrupting your education so i did a little digging after our meeting and the interesting thing is that case hasn't had any dress code suspensions in the past two years and there have been a few at watertown high school but the few at watertown high school had to do with wearing masks or refusal i should say to wear masks and that was part of
the cove regulation so i don't see this really as a problem with the suspension most students if they have something that's interfering they either change into a different shirt maybe one of their gym shirts or they turn their shirt inside out that's usually one of the major violations of that but in addition to working with our students we are also working with other organizations for example the american heart association has given us tremendous feedback on what our code of conduct suggests for students that are vaping and looking at more of a proactive approach where we are really educating students on the harms of vaping rather than suspension as the first step so that's more to follow on all of that this morning in our administrative cabinet meeting i shared a ted talk by a seven-year-old
molly wright how every child can thrive by age five and basically it talks about needing to serve and return it's the grown-up say a way of saying we need to connect talk and play early and often and the positive relationships kids have with grown-ups in their lives gives them the confidence they need to try new things explore and be a kid so next school year september we're going to be launching a one-to-one student-to-staff connection effort when you think about what we've done over the past several years with the one-to-one devices and getting a device in the hands of every student now what we need to do is make sure that we pair up every student in our district all 4 000 of them with a staff member so that they feel connected to the school
so it's going to be a huge undertaking but we're starting now and we're looking building wide what that will look like within each building and so more to follow on that for me thank you thank you assistant superintendent for instruction um just to follow up on your question maria about database testing for ela something that beth and i also talked about was how much students actually need to write on those extended responses in order to receive full credit when you look at the exemplars that have been posted on stated in the past several years a student can receive full credit on one of those extended responses by writing about 10 to 12 sentences so when we really thought about that i think the justification for them being able to type especially since there's no time
limit on the testing it seemed that you know as best that the data will shake out itself there are some reports that data for schools that have undertaken computer-based testing is slightly lower um than students who participate in paper-based testing but we also look at this as just a small snapshot in time of student performance so one other shout out for wiley as well we have two teachers at the fifth grade level who volunteered or i sort of asked them if they would be willing to and they said yes they piloted a trunk of cultural and geographical items from oaxaca mexico and they just did it a couple of weeks ago it's called the red trunk project and it's something that came across our desk as we were looking to pursue expanding our social studies
um and the re the culturally relevant materials that we offer within that program and so they took some time students with that trunk from mexico came some food items they were able to look at it and study real cocoa beans they had clothing um from the culture of that the people of oaxaca they had bugs from the area not live ones but you know specimens that they could study so they really get a good sense of the culture of that and since fifth grade is um studying the canadian culture united states and mexico we thought it was appropriate so that's something that we'll be exploring further but i really want to thank aaron loveland and c.r dunn for taking that on because it was a little bit extra but their kids seem to really enjoy
it we did um start the book study on the person you mean to be how other people find bias we've had two meetings thus far and tonight we spent some time talking about psychological safety and so thinking about patty's one-to-one connection we spent a lot of time talking about how we create environments around psychological safety for our students but also for our staff and so really thinking about action steps that we can take for our district to continue moving forward around dei we did receive a programmatic monitoring notice for our pre-kindergarten program um it's about a 76-page document that we'll be working through with sed pegg and i will be meeting with them in march to start that process and so more for you coming on that for a high school our english department is
adopting plagiarism check it is a software mechanism that allows students to submit their writing into it sort of like turn it in which is something that they will have to use in higher education if they go that route but this particular software offers educational opportunities for students to sort of reflect and think about it it's not just a punitive measure for students engaging in that because we really want them to understand what plagiarism is how to combat it in your writing etc and the last thing is i think i mentioned to you earlier that the task program is converting back to ged in new york state so rachel marston and i have been working on some of the nuances of that program and how to get it off the ground there is not a lot
of guidance out there yet on sort of entrance exams for students to get into the program and such so we're waiting on that if we are supposed to be underway but we're trying to figure out all of the steps that we need to take to get that going so more to come that's it okay thank you assistant superintendent for personnel and student services so as patty had mentioned earlier uh we are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel in copenhagen this week you know as you mentioned we have upwards of 53 cases on a monday yesterday we had eight substantial so substantially less today we have four so we have 12 for the week so far we're two days in that's a huge huge improvement so we're really excited to be able to
integrate things back in uh patty and i are getting the music department tomorrow uh to talk about some future events so we're really excited about that and i also wanted to mention too that our nurses have been working very hard um they're going to when we get back from winter break they're going to do test kit distributions at all the buildings that one day we come back they put together a very nice schedule we'll be at all the buildings our nurses some of the nurses will stay in their own building we have a couple of nurses rotating around by the end of the day and one day we'll be able to distribute test kits if you have a child you have children across buildings of course you may pick up a test at one building
if you have a student at nick case in the high school you may stop at nick and get all the tests for all of your students so we're gonna offer that again to everyone we'll do another one as well but we figured that upon the return from vacation it's a great time to be able to pick up two tests for per student uh and have your students tested if they do have symptoms so that's great um also uh you will be approving uh we did assistant principal interviews for wiley here and we had two very very nice groups we had one in here and we had one of administrators in patty's office so we had a rotating panel we we really really pleased with our candidate and we're also very excited uh we're going to
start the interview process for our candidates for next year we have openings in retirement so we put those on the calendar and uh we're really excited about getting people appointed for next year and also we're going to have our candidates teach lessons as well across areas because it's a really good way to get to know our candidates because that's what they're going to be doing they're going to be teaching so we'd love to see them do teaching as well so those will be coming up um this week we're doing interviews later in the week for teacher assistant teacher aid um we're doing some custodian and maintenance interviews as well so you'll see at the next meeting hopefully we'll have candidates on the slate there and also for aids as well an assistant superintendent for finance
i see a pie chart and a graph kind of that white piece of paper just a quick look at the biggest chunk of our budget which would be pet count so this is um it's still working progress but just wanted to kind of show you where we currently are it's right around the first part is going to be on the expense category side to the graph and then the little cutout 31 million or 91 percent is towards the instruction side of course we have the other nine percent that makes up all of our ancillary support services operations and maintenance made the largest chunk of that and that will support development transportation and again this is just the salaries to be i'm not going to run through each line but just kind of scrolling down through
you see some variances in there uh maybe for the negative like looking down in central data processing we had a retirement replacement somebody just kind of looking through for some of the new positions that will be coming on that we are currently planning on budgeting there is a counselor a couple psychologists additional rti and math okay six position that we're looking at an additional librarian some of the large variances that you may see on there say around interscholastic maintenance of plants and operational plants those are all they'll still need to be we still need to take a look at that and refine those a lot of sub costs and then having to take a look at our coaches and it's hard to have the historical trend right now in the last two years and where
that was so we'll have to look at that and see what the anticipated thing is george did give me a good chunk of that budget i just haven't had a chance to put it in for that of course you can see the additional construction and programs for students with disabilities both going up there are outstanding contracts of course we have lots of negotiations going on now we have of course management confidential and a few other contracts that we still need to hammer out so that's a really quick overview because it's not set in stone yet so we want to so just kind of take a look at that i want to anticipate it the overall number that you see there is 34 million i want to anticipate much more than maybe a million fluctuation which
is a large number but percentage-wise you're only three percent there so then we have and when you take a look at that and then factor in health insurance that's coming in right around 13 million right now because we're expecting a seven percent increase that was the lowest option that that was voted out at both these or you know for the employment district suppose right there's 47 48 million of our 80-ish million budget any questions on that does healthcare fluctuate every year the health insurance center yeah well we're going to have even more because we have workers comp was holding steady we know medicare reimbursements and i haven't dug into this one but we know the reimbursements that people are getting are going to be going up so that's going to of course affect the amount
of money that we're showing out to retirees too social security and that's another seven-ish not just social security but when you look at trs ers social security additional budget items let's touch down to health insurance not with fiscal advisors regarding our current bond situation will end up often for dazny conversion at the end of this um it would be about seventy five thousand dollars cheaper versus open market when we look at going through the state so dormitory authority we did meet with mulrik had the planning meeting yesterday for that there's still a couple items we need as far as some of our cisco i think it was our cisco licenses for the phones and then once you factor in the anticipated additional computers regarding the one for one device initiative then it's probably going to
