invite members of our school community to share ideas opinions and concerns with us while we as board are here to listen carefully we take your concerns seriously public comment is not designed to be a discussion therefore please do not expect us to respond tonight instead you will receive a response by email after our meeting because we want to maintain mutual respect and civility please ensure that comments are delivered in a respectful manner to the board directly also under state and federal privacy laws we are unable to entertain any comments related to employee personnel information or any topic that may disclose information about a particular student on these matters we ask that you go through the appropriate administrative channel please note that individuals are required to sign up prior to our meeting and each speaker is
allotted three minutes for comments you'll be signaled at two and a half minutes so that you may conclude your remarks at this time we will begin public comments after i call on you please step up to the podium and state your name [Music] our first speaker is hugh hi can everybody hear me okay thanks appreciate you letting us come here tonight to express ourselves um so i just want to thank you other members of the board for this opportunity to speak as many of you know the williamsville possesses a wide diverse population that consists of asian muslim jewish black indian white et cetera et cetera students our faculty and staff do an awesome job in celebrating this ethnically diverse population through a variety of means you know not limited to but including core song choices
celebrating ethicalities observing juneteen classroom and hallway art and much much more um so i just have a few questions and i understand that they can't be answered today i did get a response in the email so with bringing in a dei coordinator facilitator consultant from the buffalo public school district what are the specific problems that we're trying to solve in this district i mean by and large you know williamsville issues are going to definitely be different than you know that of the buffalo public schools um also too with bringing in a dei facilitator coordinator consultant what job or specific things can we expect from this or these individuals to do when they're when they're officially hired so you know what would their duties be um also too i'd love to know you know what specific
you know positive outcomes we're looking so if we bring somebody in like like what can be achieved from this like what would a good outcome be and i'd also like to know too what dei success looks like you know what specific metrics did williamsville school district research and bringing in a facilitator a coordinator and can we think expect things like maybe better test tours graduation rates community engagement things of that nature also i'd love to be able to and i know maybe other members here would be very interested in getting access to the materials that are going to be distributed uh but that is really it i do uh thank you for for your time thank you thank you thank you all great questions thank you [Music] our next our next speaker is molly armbruster
my name is molly armbruster i'm here to call all parents board members and teachers to pay attention critical race theory and blm principles are infiltrating our school system i am here as a concerned citizen parent and taxpayers these are political theories that have no place in our curriculum they condone the idea of western nuclear family and are committed to its destruction the founders openly admitted to being trained marxists in 2015. some areas to point out and direct quotes from members are as follows abolish the police instead let's have full social economic and political equality we disrupt the western prescribed nuclear family structure requirement we do have the prepare to have to be prepared and completely dismantle the system of public safety when we gather we do so within the intention of freeing ourselves from the
tight group of heteronormative thinking the vast majority of the protesters were perpetuated the blood libel that police are targeting unarmed black people for death capitalism which is based in the base in the drive for profit and unpaid labor of the worker super exploits black people and create systems of kind of shore up we are trained marxists we are superverse sort of ideological theories we engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contacts while the coven 19 illness is tragic what's more tragic is capitalism let me be clear no one is arguing against diversity no one is arguing that black lives don't matter we are concerned about the volatile dangerous nature of this movement and the poison that it represents in our community we are being pushed towards a will cliff with
this and when we go over there is no going back and i will close with this matthew 7 15 beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravening wolves thank you thank you for your comments jonathan rich [Music] hey everyone i hope everyone's having a good summer um uh we've had some comments here today about critical race theory about diversity uh i think we all know what the genesis that is you know in in march of last year there was some discussion about critical race theory uh and a member of the board said well it's not it's not in williamsville it's not here it's only in buffalo um and so i just want to draw a very straight line from from what's being introduced now to critical race theory
and if individuals on the board don't understand why the concern about these ideas i encourage you to do your research um i actually use wikipedia for this i know we have a history teacher on the board so don't cursify me for that um but two questions so so the road to critical race theory and two questions right so question one what is white fragility white fragility is a defensive response by a white person when their whiteness is highlighted or mentioned right what is whiteness whiteness theory is an offshoot of critical race theory that sees race as a social construct i'm not commenting on these ideas at all what i'm saying is that there's a very very direct and short line between the ideas that are being introduced into the district and the very problematic ideas
that are being perpetuated by certain groups politically nationally and internationally thank you very much everybody have a good night [Applause] kim rise whipper and i apologize if i mispronounced your name oh you got that perfect good job thank you uh so here to speak about the same thing that my these are my friends have spoken about as well um so i'll read what i have as part of the district's diversity equity and inclusion plan there's a dei committee of our community members to help the district reach its dei goals at the helm of this committee is a dei facilitator who's compensated for their time dr braun hall defined this role for me stating that this person plans guides and manages a group event to meet its goals this person must be objective and focus on
the group process the person leading this facilitation is dr fatima morel associate superintendent of the office of culturally and linguistically responsive initiatives for the buffalo public schools in this position she leads several social justice curriculum initiatives including the installment of the 1619 project and the black lives matter at school curriculums into the core bps curriculum she created buffalo public schools emancipation curriculum where students learn that quote all white people play a part in perpetuating systemic racism in an email exchange between dr brown hall this board and i dr brown hall stated that dr fatima burrell was selected and asked to facilitate the development of a williamsville district deep wide dei plan by me because i'm familiar with her work having worked with her for many years in buffalo i believe it's important to understand the
agendas and the biases of people within the important roles in the district so i did some research on dr morell i found an interview from a bps teacher and that person stated that morel's training programs have pushed quote radical politics and become a series of quote scoldings guilt trips and demands to demean oneself simply to feel to make another feel empowered she said that teachers must submit to these manipulative mind games or face personal professional retaliation to be fair i also looked at interviews of dr merrill herself and found the following statements made by her in a time magazine interview from june of this year she said all for all our children we have to unpack white supremacy referring to the top shooter she said our young people especially our white children we've asked not
to have comments directed to a particular person okay i'll stop then thank you doing that anyway i'll continue with my speech um [Music] especially our our white children need to be educated around this so they don't end up being like this what young men who committed this horrific act we have to start reprogramming our young people on implementing this curriculum in other districts such as williamsville she said quote you need to make sure you have the support of your board members and your superintendent but i always say to districts just because they say no don't stop your conversations around systemic racism or elevating black and brown cultures they're scary so i tell them don't stop but find your allies who are your allies and who will help you move this through so i ask a
question to this board are you all aware of dr morell's biases and agendas are you aware that by her own admission she will not stop and she will find people to push this curriculum through thank you i have further questions i will ask in an email if you'd like to um give your paper to um our district clerk she can pass it on that's okay i'll email but thank you [Applause] and our last speaker today is tim terrell [Music] good evening everyone thank you for allowing me to speak um so i'm here also to talk about how the district plans to implement dei first off there's no question if the district should implement dei the question really is how should we do it in my opinion there are right ways to do it and wrong
ways to do it but clearly the right way needs to deeply involve the community at least a year concerned parents have asked for information regarding how the district plans to implement dei emails have been submitted with specific questions but we haven't received any substantive responses yet as members of the community we deserve answers so there's a dei committee you might say which sounds awesome until you learn more about how it's being run like the fact that the facilitator asked all the members of the dei committee to take the harvard implicit association test for race this test has been debunked as non-scientific by many outlets including the wall street journal out of curiosity i took it myself four times here's how the test works they ask you questions uh like this before the test starts how
warm or cold do you feel towards white people how warm or cold do you feel towards black people which statement best describes you i strongly prefer white people to black people all the way down to i strongly prefer black people to white people how how i and anyone in williamsville that i've spoken to feel towards people is based on the content of their character not the color of their skin so this test forces the test taker to view the world as black versus white and that is not how the overwhelming majority of our community views people i challenge anyone here to prove me wrong you gotta prove me wrong with evidence the fact that the facilitator believes in this test concerns me deeply that that's how this person sees the world and will use that
lens to implement a dei policy that is not right for this community next it's the test itself the mechanics of the test which is laughable in my opinion as a scientist there's pictures and words and you associate with keys on the keyboard white people black people push a key here push a key there go through a bunch of pictures bad words and good words you make the association and click the buttons then they show you the bad words and white faces and if one of them shows up hit the left key otherwise hit the right key do that two times then switch it up and now you gotta think because now it's weight it's black on the left white on the right bad words on the left okay so after they swap the keys you
have to think harder because you just learned it a certain way muscle memory um and it's harder to do so as a man of science i'm shocked that a non-scientific test like this would be used to guide our committee and finally uh the final page presents a bunch of statistics which is meant to imply that our country is systemically racist and biased towards white people against blacks in closing i believe the district has a strong history of doing great things we don't want or need a radical version of dei to divide the great district that is williamsville thank you for your comments [Applause] that concludes our uh public session for today thank you very much for your participation thank you miss poulin next on the agenda is item 5 consent agenda approval for personnel business
items and special needs and student activities may i have a motion to approve the consent agenda items miss kasmir bogner second mr buelon discussion mr leatherbarrow um yeah so i have a question about 6a and then another question about 60. um regarding 6a so i noticed that there were some summer school classes that we had previously approved staff for and then those classes were cancelled and i understand that's due to enrollment but my question is you know were there students who had enrolled for courses for the enrichment or like aspect and then weren't unable to take the courses that they enrolled for i believe they do you know for sure dr baillon oh well we would have to look into that if it's we will look into that absolutely that was kind of my question
i know he had submitted this through email just like denied the opportunity to take a class right williamsville is one of the you know your district that offers summer school classes as enrichment absolutely yeah and we can find out the exact number but if there were classes we looked at and examined all the classes that had below five students enrolled to understand if those classes will run or not just to make sure that we're maximizing the funding that we spend for the summer school so we will look to see you know which classes and if there were students that weren't allowed to do the enrichment because of the low enrollment thank you and i do appreciate that students are contacted by the summer school administrator if a class my other question was from 60 um
i understand that this resolution is something new i'm curious if the number of work day hours that were noted differ from what the required work day was in the past for any of the um groups that were mentioned no they were not thank you all right thank you for your questions anyone else questions comments all right just to go back to 6c and just to clarify it's considered a standard workday so if the hours are above that we do have a vehicle to you know make sure we compensate for that it'll be like overtime if necessary yes thank you all right so all those in favor of these consent items anyone opposed carried unanimously thank you at this time i would like to congratulate the newly appointed principal for casey middle school mr ryan harding
[Applause] thank you i'd like to congratulate them uh good evening thanks for having me i'm super honored to be appointed principal tonight of casey middle school thank you to the board dr brown hall the leadership team i appreciate everybody's involvement throughout the process the members of the committee back here and then the members who are not on the committee back here it's a pretty special group so you know i'm eternally grateful to be able to lead and lead with them not lead them but lead with them awesome i stood before this body about seven years ago and i was just thinking my kids were very young at that time and having great difficulty keeping their shirts tucked in and keeping their focus now they're going into high school and my son's wearing a men's shirt
so things change but the thing that hasn't changed for me is the attitude that i came in with seven years ago and that was an attitude of gratitude i continue to have that and i think that having that gratitude and that perspective is super important in the work that we do because there's a lot of stuff that can beat us down so we have to stay eternally optimistic and do the right thing for kids and i am so confident that that we've got the right uh situation going at casey so much so that the former principal is in the back of the room wow and i'm not worried about him stabbing me in the back because he left but but um it really truly is a family you know i said to many people over
the years i made a lateral move down a level which is not usually good for a career and i never went to casey looking to be the principal but i promise you i'm gonna do a good job because they're too important to me thank you have a great [Applause] night thank you again mr hardy and i would now like to introduce the newly appointed assistant principals one for transit middle school miss andrea rozinski and for forest elementary miss claire likata michael please feel free to come to the podium if you would like to make any comments good evening everyone it's hard to follow someone like brian who is my former assistant principal and i'm super confident that he'll do a wonderful job i'm really excited for casey but i'd also like to thank all of
you the members of the board and dr brown hall and the leadership team and dr wall and mr quast for this wonderful opportunity i actually started teaching one of my first teaching positions involved one class at transit middle school at the end of the day it was a group of seventh graders and i was a brand new teacher and it would have been really easy to come in and come out every day but the people at transit immediately made me feel like a member of their team and they really supported me throughout the year i spent there and that's really what makes me so excited to be a part of this community and like ryan i promise you that i will do a good job so thank you all very much thank you [Applause] good
evening um first and foremost i would like to thank the members of the forest family for coming here how lucky am i to work with these people isn't that wonderful um so it's my honor and privilege to be the new assistant principal at forest elementary i grew up in williamsville i went through williamsville schools um so it i'm just so happy to be back home so thank you [Applause] you pause for 30 seconds because we must do pictures of this invitation our new principal and our assistant principals if you would come join dr brown hall up here and yourself dr mccleary hey yes and we're smiling too i'm happy [Music] thank you all for coming for support also that was great [Music] i would like to thank the following retirees for their service to the
district connie donnelly teacher aide south high school for 11 years of service jennifer lake clerk typist transportation department for 15 years of service anthony oliver teacher aide mill middle school for one year of service margaret pegliacci teacher aide east high school 16 years of service joyce von opdorf teacher aide heim elementary 25 years of service again congratulations to all those retirees [Applause] number nine is there a motion to approve the minutes from the july 5th 2022 organizational meeting miss poulin second dr thing any corrections or discussion all in favor opposed carried unanimously thank you all right okay number 10 president's report the upcoming committee meetings are listed in board docs we know that there will be a meeting on august 10th for the office of the new york state comptroller webinar on management's responsibility for
internal internal controls and attending ms casmerick bogner and dr littman board members oh question i signed up for that meeting as well thank you anyone else already also attending all right thank you dr singh all right and i would like to ask who of you will be able to attend the building tour that we've talked about that we have an opportunity to tour the updates from south mill and maple east we pick an actual time and date yeah at this point uh miss kerry is going to kind of go through and see where we are um yes there there were three possibilities for i guess four technically possibilities and i totally understand for several individuals you said yes you'd like to but this has to happen or this can't happen and so forth but at
least we'd have a a pretty good idea to start thank you president mcclary so i know that miss uh blackenger is not able to attend correct and then um [Music] dr lipman you said flexible flexible okay and then um mr bulin you said after three o'clock um the 24th only that's the only day okay and then mr biscagelia flexible friends on the day depends on the day okay this is kazmarek bogner you said are you still able to attend any of those days i should be able to attend i can't confirm 100 yet okay uh and then miss leatherbarrow it's just going to unfortunately i just can't commit to a specific day but um i'm somewhat flexible okay and then dr mcclary reflects flexible as well and dr singh not available oh okay and then
miss poulin said yes and preferably august 26 correct right but i could but i couldn't make the others work so okay um would it be okay if everyone did it um met august 24th after 3 p.m what day of the week is that place it is it's wednesday wednesday fine we'll put it out there so i'll put it in for wednesday after 30 pm and will that work for the buildings i believe so if it doesn't then well yeah i didn't know it started about three o'clock whether it had any effect on workers or anything well i'm not sure if i'm the only one holding it up if you need to do it a different time that's fine so for now i'll just keep it at august uh 24th in the afternoon and then we'll
take it from there all right thank you everyone thank you mrs carey and uh events just of no the new teacher oh that's a tuesday to wednesday it's a wednesday okay yeah yeah that was never wrong yeah the new teacher orientation this year will be virtual events on august 24th and august 25th the opening day for staff and support staff is tuesday august 30th also virtual and there will be the 2022 live virtual board officers academy on september 16th i have signed up to attend that i don't know if anyone else is also interested okay and our upcoming event on august 11th two days from now is our board retreat may i confirm the attendance at the board retreat that all are able to attend correct all right thank you and i would also like
to confirm attendance for our october 1st community forum is anyone not going to be available on october 1st or you know okay i'm available now but um no i mean that's that's a very tournament logical i i totally understand what you're saying that we're looking over a month almost two months away we have i shouldn't now good all right um and prior events the district-wide communication committee had a meeting our members are mr bescalia and mrs kasmerick bogner do either of you want to make any report or comments from the communication committee meeting um i submitted a liaison report i think that's the price thank you and the district-wide dei committee held a meeting on july 26th our board members on that committee are dr littman miss poulin dr singh and mr buelon does anyone
have a reporter comment on that meeting i also didn't submit a um liaison report for that um it is too bad so many people left because we could have um addressed some of their concerns that i'm i'm finding the process to be very um thoughtful and you know there's certainly no um predisposed this is the way things are going to be feel about how things are moving forward so um i'm excited about how how we're rolling this out but thank you for your comments yes question about that is to have a question because they're because all of the speakers that spoke tonight you know i'm sorry that they left but all of them did speak about that specific topic were any since i'm not a part of that committee work were any of the speakers
in attendance tonight are any of them a part of that deity no they they are not part of that dei team um so that's that's an important piece and i'm going to speak about it in the community update because i i really want to encourage people if they have any questions about the dei work that we're undertaking to contact me i have been as miss uh writes weber said that i have been in communication with her i answer her question she's the only person but i have corresponded with her and i even met with jonathan rich because i want people to understand that the plan that dr morrell is helping us facilitate is a plan for williamsville by william's role i don't want anyone thinking that what buffalo does or buffalo uses which you're going
to pick up and put in williamsville now saying that there are aspects of the buffalo plan that work very well you know i i worked in buffalo so i know it very well but i want to make sure everyone knows that it's a plan for williamsville by williamsville the reason dr morrell is working as our facilitator as a consultant is because of her expertise with this i mean she's nationally known for this work that's the reason she's helping us to facilitate that there's no you know pre uh thought of what's going to be in our plan and we've made that very clear and that's why we have internal meetings and we make sure that when we bring it to the group it's both educational so we can begin to think about what we need to
have in our plan and i made it very clear that our district coordinator of dei is our director of professional learning linda reway so just trying to make things clearer for everyone because i really wish that jonathan molly kim hugh and tim would have stuck around to get some additional information and knowledge because i want people to get accurate information and not use wikipedia as a source for information and i encourage them all to contact me if you have questions or concerns i appreciate that only because um you know i i've read the reports that board members have submitted from attending the committee and not just this last one but even the ones that were happening in the spring and there were no concerns raised by any members of the board last spring and you
know [Music] i respect everyone's first amendment right but i heard a lot of inaccurate information yeah right um and that's problematic because it promotes fear and it doesn't do anything to promote a sense of belonging which is our ultimate goal here absolutely so that's all i'm going to say about that and i think i think you know this past um well just last week a couple weeks ago that we we were really looking at our historic data and it was really eye-opening when we started looking at that and looking at um i i want to respect what people said that you know here in williamsville we don't look at people that ways but i think what what we're missing is the undertones that are there the subtleties of things and when we see a particular
group that's either over or under represented by population it really makes us think about are we doing the best that we could be doing are there other things that we need to be doing to to address these needs better yeah and mrs pullman's point is well taken uh the only thing i would say about data and data analytics is sometimes the data you see uh or we've seen doesn't present all of the picture and we have to you know use multiple sources of data really and make sure everything works the way it should yeah i just had a comment too and just to add to what maureen and mike said like i think at least in my experience i found that working towards a goal we don't have a plan yet we're going to get
there soon hopefully by the end of october so when people come here and say you have a plan it's not right we're working towards a plan and the second thing what mike said is i agree we need more data like we had good information last time when she looked at our school our school data and she broke it up by race and we looked at the different buckets where the kids fell in and like mike said one-year data might not be enough to actually come up with something conclusive we need a little more data analytics little more data actually to come with some sort of some sort of baseline which i mentioned to you but i think we're heading the right direction but to that point dr singh that's why it's such an important point
because when um miss rice weber asked me what is the role of of a facilitator i define that because that data dr morrell asked for from our district and so dr behlman worked with judy to make sure we provided that data and so that was an example of the type of real data disaggregation and studying of our own data we should be doing right and so that's why she used it as one example but she showed the entire committee of 46 people that were on the last meeting how to really look at your data for disproportionality right and what you should be looking at so she's not going to take us through every year but she's shown us how to do that and we can actually apply that to what we're going to do in
the future so that's why that's so important to do it that way dr brown i just wanted to comment that that was my first meeting i'm a new member of that committee and i agree with everything that everyone has said that we're doing sort of like building blocks and there is no set plan yet and i think that's really important that so far we're sort of learning how to get there we're not we haven't gotten there yet you know that plan absolutely that's really important to know thank you for repeating that anyone else on that topic all right and i thank you all that we have had the opportunity to indeed perhaps um shed some light on some of the things that were discussed earlier appreciate it and the last item under number nine is
a comment that there was the law conference last last week where miss poulin and i attended um same thing i submitted a report i don't know if you wanted to add anything yeah dr mckenna and mr gansu and dr brown hall were there also so the ted wasn't just house um and mr filipowski and mr filipowski yes was one of the presenters yes thank you all moving on to 10 b our policy committee meetings we are ready to continue the task we started last year of reviewing our policies in order are there any board members interested in being part of the policy review committee for the non-instructional slash business operations which are the series 5000 policies we would like to have a meeting in september date and time to be determined but as with our
other um policies we would like to have between two or three board members review them and report back to the board is anyone interested in being in the 5 000. miss casamarek berkner i am interested i also have a question are we going to be doing one committee level at a time okay i think go ahead no i think that's what see in the beginning we did i think we did four sort of at the same time and and it just seemed to fall smoother to pick one discuss it then pick the next one and so forth yeah so absolutely i would i would be uh willing to participate in the five thousands wonderful anyone else i know you'll do a great job dr singh will join her all right thank you and we'll find
out you know when a date and time work and so forth all right so we are moving on to our review of the board self-evaluation that we recently completed and i would like to thank all of the board members for completing our self-evaluation a quick summary shows that we rated our progress this past year as effective in all categories we are starting the year positively but there is always room for improvement our evaluation overlaps with our goals discussion later on in the meeting and that will help us determine the various areas that we're going to focus on does anybody have any questions or comments about the evaluation no all right thank you all right as i commented this is our overall evaluation if you looked at it as one two three and four we have
threes in all of the five categories that we rated thank you in 10 the erie county association of school boards their event that's coming up is the october 25th back to school dinner at clocks at this point myself mrs leather barrel and miss poulin are attending is anyone else able to attend i hear it's going to be really interesting i i asked miss carrie to um register me today so i'm also attending wonderful glad you can join us anyone else and obviously i know everyone has other commitments especially towards the end of the summer trying to finish things up and does anyone have anything to report related to the new york state school board association dr sane uh last week actually a week eight days ago i attended the new york state dei committee meeting
it was an entire day of small group sessions and larger group sessions we kind of talked about how we can now improve dai communications among the board and how to advocate for them in the at the state level and there are a lot of interesting ideas like how dei is implemented in different schools and now some schools have done it for many years and they have metrics to show that it's been effective we're not there yet but a lot of good ideas that came around through that meeting and i think i mean as we go ahead with our dei committees we can probably consider them and discuss about them and if they're good enough for us we can use them so that's my kind of hope those meetings no thank you we uh are very
appreciative that you are on that committee because it obviously adds to our perspective of what we would like to do dr littman as you've noted here you know i'm the representative uh to the bylaws amendments and resolutions so again uh in september one uh we should be receiving that and then um you know we'll discuss it if anything uh as it says and i will carry that forward in october as i did last year thank you i was was just going to comment about the school board convention and you've already answered our discussion of it thank you all right moving on to the superintendent's report dr brown hall i turn it over to you for 11a i did something wrong okay i'm sorry the state convention f oh tiny detail yes um may have a
motion to approve the attendees and authorize payment of registration for this uh nisba convention as presented i i want i need to add my name to that i think there was a miscommunication i do want to attend that that was my fault thank you so could we have i'll just ask miss kerry could you repeat could you repeat who is attending [Music] mrs allenberry on this cool linux dr lippman and now mr buelon okay all right um so do we have a motion to approve the attendance and the payment miss leather barrel second dr singh any other questions or just comments i have a question yes please um superintendent brown how will you also be attending i will yes i will anything else all in favor post gary thank you now um i will turn
it over to dr brown hall for a discussion of in the update thank you very much board president mccleary we have a lot to go over this month so i will try to keep it quick health and safety first and foremost the district is awaiting any covet 19 guidance from new york state department of health for the 22-23 school year um if anything there will be some reliefs that we are expecting in that especially in relation to staff members having to test weekly so that's what we're anticipating from the government i know kathy hulk excuse me governor hoka was also explaining that she doesn't anticipate starting with any type of restrictions on our schools so we will be able to continue as we ended the school year but once the district receives any guidance we
will send an update to families and staff and update the covet 19 education page on the district website we will have another code 19 test kit distribution the last one in july was very successful we distributed about 4 000 test kits so this test distribution will be august 18 10 am to 3 pm at casey middle school so again students will be allocated to test kicks kicks and faculty and staff will be allocated one test kit so a wix mail will be sent to families and staff with details later this week and if you're not able to met to meet that or come to get a test kit don't worry we will have other test kit distributions throughout the school year i know that the governor's office will be releasing statewide another 3 million just
so that families can test whenever they feel the need the first day of school is tuesday september 6th right around the corner less than a month away buildings will be sharing information regarding new student orientation and open houses the dates and the times for each building are available on the wix event calendar so dr bailin worked with our school to make sure we got all that data and it is updated in the wix event calendar but if you have any questions please contact your building directly transportation so i want everyone to really pay attention to this one the the district is anticipating a bus driver shortage to begin the school year and we're asking that if you are interested or know anyone that's interested in becoming a bus driver to please contact our transportation company
student transportation of america by calling 716-912-6143 bus route information will be available august 29th however please know due to the need for daily bus changes we ask for flexibility right so the my stop bus tracking app may not be available at various times because we may have to combine some routes so we just ask for your flexibility especially during the first weeks of school once we get all the bus routes figured out very similar to last year if you have any questions please contact our transportation department by calling 716 626 83 so there will be other things we'll be examining also in regards to transportation because again we want to make it smooth and we don't want to have that much of a disruption for our students but we will keep you all updated but
again i'll go back to the top another commercial if you know anyone or if you are interested in becoming a bus driver even if you can only do the morning route or the afternoon route please call sta at one four 716-912-6143 technology so i wanted to start early this year to let everyone know that at the high school level the chromebook loner program will be continuing for the 22-23 school year if you have any questions regarding this program please contact your building principal or assistant principals i know we spend all last school year even until the june board meeting with individuals explaining that they did not know about the chromebook loaner program it will be going on again this year and we will encourage not encourage we will make sure that the high school principals
put it in their newsletter so families are aware free and reduced meals so this is important also so information regarding child nutrition is available on the williamsville website under child nutrition you can bring up the powerpoint this powerpoint presentation inboard docs and click on wcsd child nutrition while we're able to provide meals to all students throughout the covet 19 pandemic for free this will not occur for the 22-23 school year parents and guardians must submit a free and reduced lunch application to qualify for the program you're able to click here in this powerpoint presentation for the free and reduced lunch application and they will also be available in our school buildings my school bucks to pre-pay for school meals you can sign up here also in this link or go to the child nutrition website
i know that's a convenient way for parents to put money on their students account to pay for their lunches but this is important the early you get your application material in the less you have to worry about in those first few weeks of school just because it's been a while since parents have had to pay for lunches could either you or mr murturski remind us and other parents what the cost is for the meals at elementary middle and high school that's a good question it's on the new child nutrition website i don't know because i don't know what offhand because you're right it has been a while and i'm always focused on the cookies so yeah thank you though national competitions so this came up last year and i know the board asked us to
look into it we met uh with our uh schools our staff about national competitions so this beginning the 22-23 school year the district will provide the necessary chaperones for national competitions i know in the past it was requirement that parents attend or have a parent that is attending be responsible for other students if your parent cannot attend we will make sure that we have the necessary chaperones for our students for any national competition but we will also make sure that we're not waiting to the last minute to plan that so any programmer or activity that culminates in the national competition will need to share that in information with the district in september so we're planning accordingly all year long and not waiting to see if they make the national competition we will just plan as
if they are going to make the national competition dei and communications committee so these are very important and i want to start talking about the diversity equity and inclusion committee because we had about five speakers this evening that spoke about the committee and i appreciate any time someone comes to share input with the board and with the superintendent so i thank you for that our meetings our next meetings are august 16th september 27th and october 25th so a question came up tonight about if the materials that we use in our dei committees will be available and i know that was asked before and i want to share that we will be establishing a district website in regard to dei so many of the materials can be shared and it will be also learning for our
community and our teachers knowing that everyone is at different phases in their comfortability or their knowledge of dei we will have a beginner intermediate and advanced section also so that everyone can see many of the resources that we have as a district in regard to dei and i want to remind everyone that dei work in the district did not begin with the formation of this dei committee our district has been very advanced with the work they've been doing with dei it goes back maybe two octobers ago i remember seeing a presentation that dr baillon and assistant superintendent skin zuzo did on dei in our district so we are advancing that really with the push from new york state board of regents on what they expect districts to really understand discover train have professional learning opportunities
in dei so it's really important that our community understands that and what that leads us to is opportunities for not only professional learning for our teachers and our school district but our community as a whole so everyone understands what dei is what culturally responsive sustaining education framework is that's um sponsored by new york state and really how we're adhering to our dei policy that was passed by the board in october of 2021 these are all important things that everyone really really should be knowledgeable of but i also want to share with the community and i mentioned it before but i want to re-mention it because we um want to make sure it's clear that the person that we use to help facilitate the dei plan that's developed for williamsville by williamsville is dr fatima morell
our district dei coordinator is our director of professional learning linda rouway so these roles are different because dr morrell helps facilitate the structure and development of a dei plan that's why we have over 46 members on our dei committee because they are the ones that are responsible for really putting in the work for a plan for williamsville by williamsville and that committee consists of 10 parents also so these are all important things i want the committee and the community as a whole to know and if anyone has any questions please feel free to email me i've been in correspondence with many parents not just parents that spoke this evening but many parents about dei i've set up meetings i've met with individuals i've offered meetings i want everyone to be clear i don't want anyone
to be upset about dei work or misinformed about dei work because the only way we move together in regards to the diversity equity and inclusion in our district is when we all move forward together but we don't operate on fragile knowledge that's very important also in addition to the dei committee we have a district-wide communications committee and those next meetings are august 22nd september the communications committees will be working in their buildings on their action plans and then we have another communications committee on october 17th at the last meeting our director of communications who leads that committee heard some of the communications data from our district-wide survey that survey data will be posted on our website before the end of the month because we want to make sure all schools have access to that data
also as they develop their action plans questions comments and answers so looking to how we can enhance communication from our community our parents and the superintendent's office beginning in september the superintendent me will be responding to questions and comments from stakeholders in a new segment of the district's weekly newsletter so we do the video weekly newsletter and the written one so we will have a mechanism set up for people to submit questions and we will address one of those questions each week speaker series so i um communicated with sarah smith ronan who is one of the new co-presidents of the ptsa council and they agreed that they would um partner with me and the district and developing a speaker series so we have four so far um that we're working on for this school year
one of them is focused on restorative justice restorative practices what it is and what it looks like in our school buildings another one will be focused on sepsa what our special education ptsa offers our district and how it really advocates for all of our special ed and our general ed families another one will be focused on dei what it is what it is not and why it is not crt and the fourth one will be focused on um different aspects of community building in regards to um vaping kids escaping drugs and how we all as a community are responsible for our students and what they do inside the school building and outside of the school building so those are the four speaker series that we have lined up and we'll be working with the ptsa
council to co-sponsor those dr whitman i mean if you're thinking of new additional topics uh maybe something on student mental health that whole area might need to be addressed you know what that's that's a good idea dr whitman so thank you very much for that because that is a huge focus so thank you very much for that and again this speaker series is something that we want to have um more regularly we have four that we're going to start planning out this year and then we can continue it year after year budget planning so this is important too and i want to be very upfront with our community in july we received a letter from the erie county comptroller and it wasn't just to williams it was to all school districts indicating a reduction in
sales tax revenue for the county so with a reduction in sales tax tax revenue that will be a reduction in the revenue from sales tax that we receive as a district in addition to that they anticipate an increase in the ers and trs contributions our district must make so that's an increase in money going out a decrease in money coming in so these funds are typically shared by the county with local school districts so we want to be aware of that now because it could impact the budgets for 2324 and the 2425 school years we will continue to keep all stakeholders updated throughout budget planning and we will begin to start the budget planning process earlier and that's the end of the community update i know there is a lot involved in there but if
any board members have questions feel free to ask now dr brown yes sir mr dylan the dei meeting in september falls on rosh hashanah oh then we will change that i didn't know if you knew that or not we would definitely change that we were uh going back and forth with dates so we can definitely change that okay i just wanted to bring that to you thank you very much absolutely dr lippmann usually catches me on those things yeah it's teamwork absolutely teamwork makes the dream work absolutely thank you very much thank you very much board member and again thank you dr brown hall for a very informative community update next may i have a motion to resolve to approve and adopt the following items 11b appointments for the dasa district and building coordinators 11c
the district special education report and 11d the district safely safely safety plan as presented you have a motion for that miss casmerick bogner do i have a second is a leather barrel any discussion mr leather barrel i had submitted um several questions regarding the special education report and they were answered to my satisfaction the email so i appreciate that but i just want to share at least one of those questions so that the public gets to hear them as well so i understand that this is a report of what took place the last two years correct years right when we're voting on it we're voting as a report and i also understand that education involves continuous school improvement and that we will always be looking to continually get better in all areas right so i
guess um my continuous improvement continuous absolutely right not your university um no no absolutely i know for sure principal courses yes um so one of the questions i had in the report um it's it broke down the left the different classrooms and the services in each building and it had 15 1 um at a couple of the middle schools and i was just trying to figure out if those were 15 1 academic classes or are they more for medically challenged students right so fifth and sixth grade we have fifteen one self-contained program fifth and sixth grade the seventh and eighth grade and any fifteen to one uh uh course is geared more towards ela and math and those are specific courses that are small in population students with higher needs who are getting attention more
one-on-one attention from the certified special education teacher in that area who's able to provide them with the instruction and ela and math in those areas so it's really an effort for us to do what we can to help best serve our students who have a low level um and struggling uh but to provide them with the individual support and small class setting okay and we also have nissa classes that are correct team one correct awesome right that's a whole separate right i think was that what you were curriculum you know it's it's tricky because um it is an area where sometimes parents will come to us as board members i'll speak for myself because parents come to me as board members right um but i'm also a former educator and taught in a in a
co-teaching classroom with a special education educator for several years and you know i've been a part of csc meetings i understand the process and that every child's plan is individualized so i don't think it's wise for me as a board member to critique um you know any decision that's made at a csc meeting because i'm not part of that process right um and i also know that if if it's your child if it's my child i'm gonna go to bed for my child and i want everything possible for my child right um but i'm just trying to figure out as a board member what i can do and what the right questions are to ask in the future so that we are continually improving and and you know that's just me speaking speaking honestly because
i do listen to stakeholders when they come to me um but i also feel that my questions are often satisfied when i ask them so that's just me being very honest about the situation at hand i don't have specific reasons to question anything other than i want to make sure i'm a voice for parents who voice concerns to me and we we do appreciate that and i i want to thank assistant superintendent skin zuzo and the special ed directors and our special ed teachers and our you know cse coordinators our 504 coordinators because they do look at each case individually they work very hard and the case managers work very hard to support all of our students and i like what you're saying because when we look for continual improvement we look to see what
can we do better right and i know we have mentioned internally possibly uh you know even doing a special ed you know mini audit if you will so that we can look at the services we offer in our district and the services that boces offers right because it's important that we realize that boces is our partner and they don't just offer courses or special programming to say they offer it they offer it because districts participate in it because they are a robust program and they have a lot of specialists there also so it might be good also to have an audit done to see what we're under utilizing with boces and what we might want to utilize even more so okay and one other question i had which wasn't really part of this report but
i feel it is relevant is if a parent is concerned that their child's iep isn't being followed or if they have a 504 plan and they're concerned that those accommodations aren't being followed what is the course of action for that parent what is board member as a board member should i be recommending to that parent you you would refer that parent to me and then we will take it from there we'll i'll have a conversation with assistant superintendent skanzus we'll talk with that principal just to make sure that those plans are being followed thank you and then my final piece will just be um to president mcclary when when we meet with when we see dave lowry from erie county association of school boards i know he was asking recently about what topics school districts
might be interested in in the future for their roundtable breakout sessions i do feel that special education and the role of the school board as it pertains to special education would be a really great topic for ec asp to consider i'm hoping at the nisba convention that there is assumption that's offered um i haven't looked thoroughly at all of the offerings but um i do feel that that's something that you know we do a lot of professional development as board members and i know i've been over six years i've attended a lot of them but i will say that special education is not a topic that i think has been offered enough in my opinion and i think one of the challenges in special education and mr kansas can certainly um address it is that
it's not a one-size-fits-all because we have students with so many differential diagnoses that they don't all necessarily fit into the same model and so we can't be all things to all people we have to rely on some of those outside resources and bow season right offer i think that's part of the problem that we're facing in williamsville is that we don't offer enough i'll talk about this later but i think that we've put students in one or two boxes and we're doing them a disservice but i'll speak about this later and i think that's a major problem i look forward to that conversation because i i absolutely do not agree with that you're entitled absolutely any other questions or comments about 11 b c or d all in favor of accepting them opposed carried unanimously
and thank you mrs leather barrel i do like the idea of mentioning to mr lowry about the special ed um um and if we would look at 11e which is the discipline report i know all of you have seen it and hopefully had a chance to review with questions or comments on that um does anyone want to share any questions or comments regarding the discipline report as it is in board docs i i appreciated the um the report the only thing that i asked was if we had a we had a list of all of the office referrals and i wondered if there was some sort of follow-up potential to um what was the just how how were those dealt with you know what was the disposition of them not necessarily a task by task
but in general what kinds of options were provided for the discipline referrals so i know we had a list of the number of students who were suspended but that was considerably less than the number of students who were referred to the office so what was the disposition of those office referrals yep and and and i appreciate that question and that can be so varied right right that can be so varied because there's not a one-to-one correlation you know using the progressive discipline model this restorative justice model that can be so very let me think about that to see because i also don't want to produce too much in this report right it gets too into the weeds so let me think about that one okay anyone else mrs leatherbury um one of the questions i
had was if all of the middle schools and high schools um require detention i don't know if requires the right word but have a detention okay and is that like at the end after school or is that during the school like during their lunch or i think it it can be either right so lunch detentions after school detentions and so i believe we allow the schools the flexibility to have that okay thank you dr littman you know uh i've analyzed this data through the years and uh i don't have um like other data but it would be nice to see uh sort of a comparison year to year what's going on going up what are the issues that are growing which ones are declining and what we have done to help reduce and what we
may need to do to do that the second part of that point you know i look at across the high schools and middle schools elementary and i think of my days as a high school teacher and you think back is what is a level of consistent enforcement by different people in different schools so if somebody does something in school a we might let it slide but in school b we're much more uh you know hard on the students and that might skew the data to some extent but again i'm not in the schools i don't know you know each administrators and how because i came from a high school which is an inner city school that was very disciplinary focused and i'm sure our numbers would be high on a number of things but i'm
sure in my same school district that there were some other uh schools in you might say different neighborhoods would have a different mix of right so i like your first point is very well taken um doing a historical look but it would have to be a condensed report and not by school because it would just get too big and bulky you know so we can look at that and i know dr singh also brought up prior about doing percentages too because of course the numbers will be higher at larger schools right you have more students you're dealing with so if we do it as a percentage of student enrollment so that's something we can look at for the future i mean i had one other question is if you're going to look at this through
the dei lens and you break it down by space or whichever metric you want to look at and i know we talk about having a baseline for academic performance can we use this at least i know this one your data is not sufficient but some sort of data like because the whole point of having all these dea programs in school is not only to improve academic performance but also reduce uh the instructions that students do in school like reduce the number of incidents where they are being punished or disciplined and the effect of our reservative restorative justice programs in our schools if you have more programs in our schools you should see less infractions by students possibly right so i i'm not saying it's going to happen but it's good how effective our programs absolutely
but we want to make sure that we're not and this is always the trouble with data right we always want a one-to-one correlation when you can only do that if you hold everything else constant right and that just doesn't happen we would hope to see so when we implement dei initiatives right we would hope to see because the i part is the inclusivity right so when you have an inclusive environment students enjoy coming to school right and attendance increases attendance increases we then anticipate for you know students academic performance to increase so that's the eye piece when students have this sense of belonging in a school building they love coming but we have to make sure we're following all the steps and everything else is kept constant right which is very hard to do now
we hope in our impetus for implementing dei practices and restorative practices is to make sure that students are able to bring their whole self to school and that we acknowledge their whole self we appreciate their whole self and we educate their whole self and they can see themselves in the curriculum right that all leads to that sense of belonging so that will inevitably lead to higher student achievement right that's our goal i know it sounds great it's just a matter of making sure we have everything lined up to see that but a starting point would be let's examine our data to see if when we implement restorative practices make sure we have strong dei initiatives if we see a change year to year i mean i said you should see i guess if everything went
according to plan more student participation which means less in class punishments like kids start being paid doing all that homework being more i guess i'm guessing more interest participation so you're absolutely right it boils down to increased for better performance better school performance and that's exactly what we're longing for that's what we're hoping right that's exactly what we're hoping i'm mccleary to acknowledge sometimes i say dr littman and i'm not the board president right so i was waiting for dr mccleary to acknowledge uh no it's just two things it was somewhat positive that uh if you look at the smoking tobacco vape usage there's only uh you know minimal cases it's a middle school and even the amount at the high school seem unreasonable the other thing i didn't need to explain next to the
last one called wandering wandering yeah i don't know if that was like wandering like wondering what was going on or whatever was you know it goes along with skipping classes right so wandering along anyone else again thank you everybody for participating in our discussions moving on to number 12 finances may have a motion to resolve to approve and adopt the following finance items 12a the 2022-23 school year tax warrant 12b the non-resident tuition rates and 12c amherst youth basketball lease agreement as presented dr singh to have a second miss poulin discussion all in favor posed carrie thank you we are up to number 13 which is our liaison reports if you have any liaison reports please make sure that you send them to mrs carey i think the important piece at the moment is that
the list of assignments and meeting dates are in board docs some of the dates are still in the works and will be updated when received and the pta ptsa parent list is also in board docs for board members viewing please make contact with the president and building principal at the school that you are assigned to prior to september first so that you have a chance to kind of say hi especially if you happen to be new to that particular school building does anyone else does anyone have anything else about the list of assignments that we have all agreed to that anyone has any changes thoughts comments issues all right thank you moving on legislative matters we have no matters to discuss under curriculum may have a motion to adopt and approve the professional learning plan
for 2022-23 as it has been presented mrs leather barrel second dr littman discussion yes thank you it's a very um impressive impressive caliber of offerings so thank you it is and i want to thank dr bailin and linda rouway for making sure that takes place every year and assembling there are so many professional learning opportunities for our teachers and so absolutely thank you all right under 16 personnel may i have a motion to resolve and vote on it oh you do all in favor of the professional learning plan thank you opposed appreciate that please keep me on my toes under personnel may i have a motion to resolve and approve the superintendent's contract extension in 16a and 10-year recommendations in 16b as presented miss poulin second dr lippman any other discussion all in favor posed
carried thank you and now back to dr brown hall and adding mr matursky on the district-wide security capital project update absolutely there's a lot of great updates and i appreciate board members um who are willing and who are able to take time out of their schedule to actually go on a tour to see some of the security updates at the schools but um mr maturoski has been keeping us updated in the weekly updates but i'll ask him now to just share with the board and the community some of the other capital project updates thank you dr brown hall this summer we have four major roof construction projects going on north high school just across from us country parkway forest elementary and maple east and if you go by those schools you'll see all the work
going on we're probably about halfway through the season to the summer construction schedule and really we've been fortunate not having a lot of rain which we want for our gardens but for living it's not the best thing so they're pretty much on schedule uh and and that's a good thing so that work is going according to our plan um the other major work that we're doing is associated with our security vestibules which again are occurring at country parkway mill middle south high school uh forest and maple east and again all of those they're a little bit different when you go on the tour you'll see uh really how they're different south we have more of an internal vestibule that you'll see over at mill another more of an internal but total office reconstruction and then
you're going to see at forest or maple leaf you're going to see an actual external vestibule so this is the first part of that work and right now um we're really in a pretty good shape on all of them um as in anything going on in the building world there are some items that we're waiting for on kind of a delayed process due to the supply chain issues but we've already made alternate plans and there's nothing that would prevent or or create a security issue at any of our buildings when we begin so that's all going to be able to assure everybody that the buildings will be secure we do believe that all of those systems will be online and that leads me to just a very brief update on what is the internal security
system which is our lockdown systems you've even seen in our hallways here some of the new clocks that are being held and installed not just in hallways but in classrooms throughout the district again those buildings i mentioned are the ones we're doing at this summer and it's more than just a clock system it's also having a message board and it would go to lockdown and again that lockdown system that's being installed will come with automated locks for classroom doors and if there is an emergency those doors will auto lock there'll be a delay so that if someone is in the hall they have an opportunity to get to the classroom but there is an auto locking feature which is really one of the enhancements that you're going to see on the security project is completed
thank you very much mr maturity i appreciate that you're welcome thank you and now may i have a motion to resolve and approve the construction project change order as presented in 17b miss blechenter do i have a second mr viscalia any discussion all in favor opposed you carried unanimously there are no matters to discuss under special needs and student activities and so we are moving on to the committee of the whole we do have several individuals who have items that they would like to discuss under this category so we will begin with mr buelon with a topic about special education uh good evening um i've been on the board for two months i think since i took and that's graduation season and i've been going to parties and i have been inundated by parents complaining
about special ed programs offered and how they're offered in ways and i am a parent of a special ed student so i i feel many of their pains i the thing that i guess is the question the questions i have and the parents have and it's almost uniform is why is it so hard to get what the student needs why is the district seem to fight the parent at every level and i appreciate what uh mr clutterbarrow was saying about can't you can't argue with the cscb's you're not in it but it's the process of getting to the csc and what happens the decisions made there and i think that's a huge concern and i can't tell you how many parents in the last two months have told me oh my friends are moving out
of the district because their kids with special needs aren't getting what they they they deserve and by law we have to give them i think that's a huge concern for us as a board that we're losing population because of our special ed program and i think parents should not have to become experts in special ed law and services in order to get the kids what they need and that is a huge concern inside the community and i don't know if other board members are hearing the same thing but i'm hearing it everywhere i go and it's it's a concern and as i said earlier i think that often waynesville puts kids into boxes and if they don't fit they don't know what to do with them and that that's a problem we need to be
a leader in special ed we can't fall behind because if we fall behind we're going to lose more and more students and population and that leads to a loss in tax base and i just think that's really important that we look to see how we can improve special ed services and how they're implemented in the district and i guess it leaves me with the question of why why does williams will have the reputation in the greater community ask any teacher in any district and they'll say williamsville is one on the bottom ask parents they'll all say the same and my question is why is that and how do we change that and and when i was preparing to talk about this people said come with solutions i have a couple i think that i'd like
to propose for example why is there no 15 to 1 1 academic track in middle school i don't understand that there's been a problem since my son was in middle school and there was no program middle school is hard enough for kids why are we making them take away services and go back to their home school and like hurting the kids that need the help the most i don't get that is it because there's not enough need which i find unbelievable because look at the numbers in that report is that we that we don't want to spend the money i i don't know the answer is there not enough teachers and no one's been able to provide me with an answer that satisfies me or the constituents that i'm talking to on a daily basis
those are my concerns and not my concerns the concerns of the voters and the people that pay the taxes here i i think that's a huge thing that the special ed services are good but they can be better and we we're talking about dei this is inclusion of special ed kids this is the importance of including everyone and challenging everybody i think that the important thing is to me that the teachers have been great every teacher i've ever talked to has been helpful and willing to work it seems that it's the upper echelons of the district that work against the special ed kids and that in my opinion that has to stop and the question again is i'm left with is why and how do we make it better that's where we need to go
how do we make it better and is it offer is it hiring more special ed teachers is it just offering more programs those are the answers we need to seek and i like that we're going to do this deep dive on special ed i think that's really crucial to self-examine other districts have these programs why don't we and i'm sorry no i'm just done yeah pretty much okay yeah and and and i just want to be very thoughtful with how i respond right because going back to something that uh board member leatherborough said earlier about continuous improvement right we can always look to continuously improve and i go back to over a year now ago when i started my listening tours and everyone that spoke about special ed said you know special ed has improved
greatly in our district i would not disagree with you no no no i i know you i know you're not you were saying that good let's get to better right and we're always looking to continuously improve but we also want to make sure we're examining with the professional lens of the professionals we have in the district right and i don't want us pointing a finger of blame either right towards the upper echelon or who whomever with special elect concerns we all are on the same team i've said it before and we always want want what's best for every student in our district but we also want to make sure we balance that with what's in the best interest of the child and not the want or the desire of a parent that may not be
you know and i also understand you know everybody that advocates for special ed they will look for a listening ear and that's one of the things you ran on so that's why they're probably seeking you out to explain this and it's very helpful that you share that with the board but when i talk about doing an audit to do a deep dive i think that's very beneficial because as you mentioned other districts have other programs and some they don't that's why boces has the programs also right it's important we look at what we offer what we can offer successfully and then what we need to partner with other districts four and partner with both these four so that will be a goal that we look at this year anyone else comment on this topic just
comment quickly um i think that it's really important and i appreciate the way we were all like listening and not like listening actively and i appreciate you sharing and when you speak and you share it on your own that you're the parent of a specialized child so like i have compassion for what you're saying and i believe you have good intentions and so when we move forward we look at what do what do we as a board have authority over we have authority over policy so i think that um i i too am happy to know that there's going to be some looking into this and i believe that comes with the dei i think that dei actually helps us to explore special education more thoroughly right um but i am just glad that i'm
a part of this board to be able to be a part of that work going forward so that if there are recommendations that need to be made to our policy that we get to that point eventually dr littman i agree with the points of mr buelon but i just from a procedural standpoint uh i thought the committee the whole was for information to be presented and then if uh there was support of the board it would be explored is that accurate or inaccurate it is accurate okay and the only reason and i i make a motion okay and i i apologize for jumping in only because it was in line with what had been discussed previously and what we're looking at as one of our you know goals for this year outside of what we
have in the district goals it's something that we internally want to make sure we're always looking to continuously improve yeah i just want to make sure if there's going to be a charge to the district that the board you know moves that forward correctly to you absolutely thank you i i did not and maybe it was me but i did not hear mr buelon make a motion he didn't he did not nor did he nor did he ask to have anybody make a motion so that's why it wasn't going back to the procedure no no you don't need to i understand procedure but it's already something that we're we're you know doing always continuous improvement and i just i just want to make sure that we don't lose the forest through the trees the object
is to help the kids always and that if we want to leave a legacy if we want to do anything important at all that's the bottom line and if we don't help the kids that need it the most then shame on us and that that to me is the most important thing if this district fails to help womensville we hold ourselves up to be the best district or one of the shining stars in the state if we fail to help the kids that need it most then shame on us i under i understand your comments and again if there is a motion or um something specific that you would like to see moved forward or investigated well i guess if you'd like to just think about it maybe for another month or time i guess
one of the motions is why do we not have can we find out why we don't have a 15-1-1 academic program in middle school like what's the how do i do that like what is that is that a motion like should we we motion to investigate why that program does not exist or how does that work i can't answer that question i was just going to say we can make sure but we have i think perhaps an answer already so to answer your question we do have a program in our middle school it's for fifth and sixth grade now middle school does content to seventh and eighth grade but which we don't have a program before and i can explain to you what so let me let me go back even further to say that
we've had a program that started in first grade it's progressed to second third fourth fifth and sixth grade in my time as assistant superintendent so i will say that you know some of the comments you make about failing kids i take that very personally and i don't agree with it and uh so we are we are helping kids individually um uh for the needs that they have and as mrs paulin said it's not a cookie cutter type thing so when we do not have support in seventh and eighth grade it's because we want to get kids into the least restrictive environment to prepare them for high school right and in doing so many of those kids get supports beyond what they need or i'm sorry beyond what what most kids would get in order for
them to help be successful in seventh and eighth grade and not being in a self-contained program i will tell you what we've done is we've had 15-1 classes in ela and math for some groups of kids to provide them the supports in those two content areas um about 75 percent of their day though is to be um in an inclusive type of atmosphere where they're pushed out and prepared with a majority and a multitude of supports in those areas knowing that they need them so i mean that's kind of like our we've listened to parents for many years and provided them with what they were looking for up to sixth grade and now seventh and eighth grade it's an opportunity for us to try to kind of assess where kids are individually knowing the supports
that they need and knowing that the supports would be there for those kids and and get them to be inclusive and work on social skills and being part of the school community and not be in a self-contained setting that we think is going to not benefit kids moving forward and but i did not meet it as a personal no i but i i do think though there's a disconnect between what you're saying and what many specialized parents feel okay and that that is that's the problem that's the crux of the problem that's why people are coming to me searching me out at wegmans and at these graduation departments i mean i that's the and that needs to be fixed and i don't know and maybe that's just better communication but there are tons of parents
these parents are part of the csc process they're part of the decision making committee that's that's making the decision to help support i will also say that you know there are there are times where you know we are looking to outsource kids because we cannot support them within our structure of our district with what we support and and unfortunately um with what's transpired over the last few years it's been very difficult to place kids waiting lists that are years in the making and so you know i'm happy to see with new leadership at erie one boces uh that they're looking to put a a community together to basically talk about you know some of the needs of the school districts and how they can be better supported through both these programs they they do exist
in some other boats like every two boces has programs our parents don't want to send their kids to to to um to um holland or some program it's a far right and i totally agree i could appreciate that but um you know we uh know that you know we are best served by sending kids to other placements and i could speak from experience and i'm an uncle of of a nephew with down syndrome who lives in lancaster and they could not support him and it was a very difficult decision from the family to send him to west seneca it was the best place for him and it has been over the last year based on his his progress because of the structures the supports the program the experience of the staff and the facilities that
they have to to best support those kids and i know that what dr brown hall is alluding to is sometimes the parents don't want their kids out of our district and when and often times sometimes that is the best place for their kids academic uh success and just overall success as a as a student and development thank you very much for that thorough um analysis and response assistant superintendent scanzuzzo i believe uh i'm sorry no you're doing fine remember kevin eric wagner i just wanted to um mention because i was involved in the special education ptsa and i have been involved as the liaison since i've been on the board and prior to that i was uh corresponding secretary for a year and co-president for two years of the special education ptsa that they have
a wonderful collaborative relationship with the office of exceptional education and they also provide support and networking for parents of students with special education needs and gifted programming needs so i would just like to promote as i often do parents getting involved in the special education ptsa because sometimes there may be things people are experiencing as individuals but is it a systemic issue it may not be but if you're with a larger group of parents then it's more easy to determine is this a systemic issue or is this just an individual need of an individual family so again just promoting the special education ptsa thank you very good thanks anyone else i guess i'll direct this towards you so i did hear you mentioned a lot of times you'll try with those 15 1-1 students as
they get into seventh and eighth grade um keep them in an ela slash uh math i don't want to say contain setting but for those two classes and then um is that often is that things you guys look at because obviously i think those are the two important ones when you get into seventh and eighth grade you know you don't read well you're not going to do well in social studies or you know science or you know health or whatever else you're taking um i like to hear that i just i guess that would be my question make sure you're exploring that in seventh grade i get it understaffed you hear budgets you can't right we are restricted a little bit but i do like to hear that um because i think those are two
important things and i understand the other part of the social emotional aspect of getting these kids to learn communicate get along with their their peers um i guess i did like hearing that though yeah i will also add that the one piece i think when i entered in this position we had 99 special education teachers or maybe 97 we're just at around 114 we've hired quite a bit in the last four years to support the needs of our students as we have seen increased needs of kids entering our district um you know with with needing special education services having said that every bill every middle school does have seventh grade self-contained programming for ela and math for small group setting of kids who um who need the individual support small group setting are there 15
there may not be a total of 15 in in some classes but having said that those are things that we in eighth grade um i i'm pretty sure that perhaps at transit middle school they're not there may not be any because they're because of what they do within the the uh inclusive setting with the gen ed and the co-top model that they have in place so um you know it varies but it's it's it's you know it's uh it's supportive in in what the individual student needs to best service them um you know based on what how their iep reads and and how we best feel like they can be supported in that setting yeah and the reason i bring that up is i you know when your hands are tied sometimes and things i
i understand what you're saying mr blowing i've heard parents com complaining myself as well but i think those are the avenues as mr skanzus was saying is what we should explore you know we if it's not going to be a 15-1-1 maybe you know i don't want to maybe at the administration level in the school level that's what they look into saying what is the best avenue to make sure these kids are supported and then it's communicated out to the parents better um you know i i being a teacher i am a co-teacher you know i i in seventh grade so um there's avenues that they build down to us where um you know we with the teacher myself we break them into groups where they still get that individualized attention along with the group
itself the whole class in social studies but those are the avenues those the things that maybe we can explore to help parents to help the students if we can't have that 51 if it's not attainable um that's why i brought that up with you saying that i think those are the things we can concentrate on doing and look at in the future you know we can't fix it overnight but those are things to explore so those fifteen to one classes in element are in addition to code talk classes that we have that run simultaneously for students who don't need the types of supports that would be a 15-1 setting thank you again thank you i i will make the decision that originally mr bulin you mentioned or you made a motion and i would say
that we don't need to continue in terms of it being a motion because the person we would have referred it to who did give us a very detailed uh kind of explanation for you know a very short [Music] time in him so we is certainly a topic that can be continued to be discussed but we all set yes all right thank you though um and again under the committee of the whole miss bleckinger would like some time to talk about child nutrition and the breakfast and lunch program i appreciate dr brown hall the information you sent over to me in the links they were very helpful i also had a conversation with our director of child nutrition i'm cheryl kirschner and she was a wealth of information for me and things that i didn't know
that come from our national school lunch program and that everything that they choose has to meet certain requirements you know i'm asking can we do scratch cooking and why can't our beans be more flavorful and can we choose different menu items so it seems as though the menu has been decided for the year but i would like to um dr singh was telling me that there's a committee for child nutrition and health and wellness i don't think there's a board member a part of that and i would like to request to be a part of that just so i can be a part of these future discussions and help with choosing of more healthy options and things like that for kids lunches you know and i i believe dr singh uh made that request and
i believe i looked into it and um let me get back to you on that okay with that um because there's something about that committee let me get back to you on that okay but thank you very much for that request anything else miss blackenger all right thank you and our third person who requested to speak during committee of the whole is mr bascalia talking about um the district athletic agreement yeah and i'm glad we write it in the board docs's agreement because i'll just start by saying i wasn't even aware um previous administration and and how it was uh uh announced to the public was that it was a policy but what i'm looking at is the agreement the the athletic agreement that assigned my parents and students in terms of the policies and
and um behaviors that they have to follow throughout their season well throughout the year really um a couple things one uh it's archaic it's old i sign this and i'm turning 40 this year we are one of the only districts excuse me in western new york that has such a harsh penalty for students which i think is actually the total opposite of what we're trying to prove here with restorative practices in the district um i believe it needs to change and i'm saying aye because i'm an individual board member um i don't make we decide on policies so i can't say i want to change it saying it i'd like to see it changed um i i researched and was going to bring a bunch of policies here but miss kazanak botner already i'm sorry
i already sent them in to us and emailed them i mean even the surrounding districts are all different from ours um you know for example one that is very close to us amherst actually installs or has in their policy restorative practices which i think is awesome i mean if we look at district goals and i know we're going to talk about them today the wellness community and sustainability of students all students and staff have equitable instruction and tools experiences and practice to support and enhance their physical social and emotional safety and wellness our policy doesn't do that i'm sorry did it again our agreement does not do that it does not teach kids brain does not fully develop until 24 years old 24. people make mistakes okay i was running late here and i sped
i made a mistake okay and the police officer would have said too bad too bad for you i know maybe not if i would have heard my last name but um the the idea is that even adults make mistakes and there's a learning process when when it when a student makes a mistake and and are caught doing something wrong yes they should be punished i don't believe it should be as severe as what ours our agreement is is laid out number two it does say on the website policy i think we need to change that we will get that to to light so we're so we're aware um and i really strongly believe that we need to be the front runners in things like this and we're not all these other districts have in my
eyes in my opinion better agreements um where there's levels step one step two step three then they install restorative practices so the child or student can learn from their mistakes and i really think there should be a committee started where they uh parents are involved students are involved maybe a board member administrators obviously the you know the ad you know first and foremost and district staff as well to look into this i'll bring it up every month if i have to and i'll make a motion every month until until this is agreed upon to start a committee i also believe reading into what nisba has and and there are some of their policies that came out this year it shouldn't just stop at athletics uh it should incorporate all um activities you know i think
it's kind of crazy in my mind that someone could get caught drinking and still participate in the play at school but be suspended five weeks from an event you know your athletic event it just it boggles my brain i think it shouldn't be all activities which are things that we could look into and you know we talk about better you know you know progressing and becoming better as a district and this is an area i believe we truly can um when you punish someone for five weeks they don't learn they just start to hate and we're not here for hate we're here for growth um so i i mean i would make a motion and and i'll make a motion every month if i have to um i make a motion that we start a
committee to look at the athletic agreement um incorporate and look at all different you know area school districts around to get ideas um and and then you know as as we're doing with the dei committee altered to make it williamsville's um so that that would be the motion that i would say to to start a committee to look into this and do we have us i believe the proper motion would be to ask the superintendent to look into it and then the superintendent brings you back what steps we are going to take to look into it so i think that's the proper motion from committee of the whole correct me if i'm wrong someone are you are you um amending the motion you just made then what's that i'm saying that motion i i will
amend that motion to do a proper yes i i i make a motion that the superintendent looks into starting a committee for the athletic agreement is that is there is there a second i will second that motion doctor any other discussion on the topic i'll start here and then come back this way dr singh i mean i don't know if i could add to the motion but you showed us the disciplinary report right would it be possible to break it down as academic and sport related what like report i think is just it's just academic right do we have a like the particular actions which were imposed due to any sporting activity athletic activity oh i don't think it's i don't think that's recorded is it possible to break it down that way i don't
know um what i what i don't want to leave a board meeting with is a list of so many more things so let's not even look at that right now let's deal with this and then that might come up in 2024 2025 okay mrs leather barrel um thank you mr pascal for bringing a motion i just want to say um for me personally this month um i'm not in favor of it only because um well a few things i haven't seen any parents come or stakeholders come and complain about the athletic agreement um last time was before coven it was about specific incident um and another reason to me is just more personal um i have three teenagers two are adults now um and i strongly believe in having high expectations when it comes to
drug and alcohol use and um you know my my children are athletes what i want for my own kids that we want for everybody else's kids um and i feel at this point like until i maybe take the time to read through i know you set miss kaz merrick booger sent a plethora of information and you know in fairness it came like over the weekend so i haven't looked through it yet so i would want to personally like look through all of that i'm not completely understanding [Music] components of the athletic agreement it is that you have fought with so for me it would be a no this month really appreciate that you might bring it back in the future yeah i'll bring it up every month because this is it's a it's a joke
um and holding high standards it's not about how to me it's not holding about high standards it's it's teaching kids a teachable moment um that's how i look at it and i also feel it should stretch just beyond athletics as well to where i'm coming from you know anyone else on this side want to add did i just have probably question so you use the motion to replace to study the agreement to modify the agreement or to create a policy to replace agriculture well the motion would be the superintendent to create his decision to look into creating a committee to look in the agreement and see what should be changed compared to other districts yes so now i'm not asking am i telling him he's looking into it you anyone else on the side anyone
on the side want to comment miss kasmir gogner i'm i'm just wondering as we're moving towards our dei work and moving towards restorative practices if that will be examined in our extracurricular co-curricular activities in addition to um our normal school day and and i can't answer that because you know we're still in that work so i don't know where it will take us how it will evolve so we're still in that work right now okay so that so that makes sense to me to me it seems like it may be a natural progression of that work some of this um and i'm and since we are in the middle of the dei committee work which to me might take precedent right now over over what mr buscaglia is asking for a formation of a or
to explore the formation of another committee that it might make sense to uh at least have the committee work um complete for dei before moving forward that's my comment i i guess i would also want to know like how many students have been actually impacted by this that that's a question before i would before i would want to look at going forward during my year there was 12 when i was a senior um and i could get you want me to get 100 parents to come in here i can because there's been about 100 parents complain to me give or take no joke i mean i welcome to do that um and i understand what the dei just my concern is this has been for years it's it's i just i'm not going to let
it go it's been years and i waited through covet and all that and at this point it's we're behind the times [Music] but let's move forward my ass thank you we do i don't know if it would come up in dei that's why that's why i was offering it this way um we do have a motion on the floor and so we will bring that motion to a vote for this month did it get a second i thought we did a second right yeah yes all right dr whitman yes so all those in favor of requesting the superintendent to form or explore forming a committee to review review the athletic agreement at this point in time all those in favor please raise your hand two three four five those opposed motion carries six to three
so we would direct the superintendent to add it to his list of items to be explored thank you in terms of the next item which is correspondence we received correspondence from a community member regarding the postcard with our board of ed dates and contact information it was a positive correspondence we received comments that the strategic planning committee does not inc or had not included social workers but they will be explored or invited at the building level and the dei committee participation will also be further explored in terms of membership at the building level does anyone want to discuss any correspondence that i just reviewed or any that you received ms blackington just that i received positive uh feedback too on the postcard so kudos the communications team for that yes definitely thank you dr mclaren
i want to thank you for the beautiful letter that you sent to the community oh thank you i appreciate that all right at this point i have a question of the group we are ready to recess and begin our goal-setting work session does anyone request that we take a five-minute chance to wiggle okay so at um nine yeah i said no ten nine twelve i would like to call the goal setting work session to order dr brown hall would you like to begin with the district goals process and continue 2022-23 district goals absolutely i know i shared previously with the board that the strategic planning team spent so much time on the strategic planning goals and goal activities that we as a leadership team are adopting those as the district goals and that's what we
will be focused on this year so the district goals are in essence the district's strategic planning goals and that's what we will be focused on for the 22-23 school year you have anything to do can you put them up they should be in they're in board docks number 18 i'm sorry not 18 b 22 b i apologize i should have had it queued up that's my fault while they're being pulled up president mclaren is going to ask while they're being pulled up um can i just make a general comment please i just want to say that i really appreciate the way this was sort of reformatted this year um i know you know many years it was like a table and um this does like streamline it a lot um which i think you know
when you have 100 goals what do you really achieve right so you have like in buffalo we used to have like the rocks right right um just having like these key areas and have it become common language that we're all using that the board uses that the superintendent uses that the leadership team and it trickles down to our schools our schools are using the same language i think that's really important and i feel like that is how we sort of build that unity together to work towards those goals so i i really appreciate the way this was done in the work that went into it i understand a lot of it came from the strategic planning process thank everyone that was involved with that thank you do you want me to read each of them
no oh okay because then i'm done [Laughter] thank you you and now could we please see the draft of the board goals those we do need to discuss and make changes as we go through them as we saw with the district goals the board goals are centered on the same topics that came up with strategic planning we may have a few others underneath or in a few other areas but in general we would start with the same pillars that the district goals have right now what has happened certainly with the wonderful help of mrs carey would put together several board members contributed possible goals and so all of those for example that talk about communication were put on the enough under communication so if we could take a moment and i can read them out
loud or you can read them yourself and make a decision as to because right now one two three four we have four goals under communication some of them certainly can be repetitive and so if anyone would like to make a decision or suggestion in terms of you know first bullet point is great leave it alone second bullet point uh could be combined or whatever some of them are different yes no i understand that that's why i'm asking oh you can find ways because mrs carey is retyping as we go along so if anyone has which we've done in other years have any specific ways to make changes or even things that people um you know are just thinking of whatever i see miss leather barrel's hand please go ahead i just want to propose that
we use the fourth bullet as the communication goal okay so the fourth one you feel captures all that was said in one two and three also not necessarily that captures all of it i just feel like it's the most comprehensive and most appropriate that's just my opinion okay so the williamsville board of education will continue to strengthen communication and relationships with the entire school community by advancing opportunities for stakeholder input and dialogue and utilizing an open and transparent process is there anyone else who would like to i just have a question is this similar to the objective of the communications committee probably it's it's they're similar yes yes which are you saying is a bad thing or okay i agree with you should be alignment this leather bar i think the number four is pretty
straightforward kind of incorporates the other four i know as a board we really don't the only thing i'd add is i know as a board we don't really have saying this but i do believe communication between schools could improve but we that's not our that can't be our goal no that's a good point all right anyone disagree or want to change anything else or can we ask mrs carey to just wipe out one two and three that's acceptable all right gonna do that please thank you very good president president mcclary will we be doing actions at the september meeting or are we doing actions tonight i think we're doing them in september okay i think that makes the most sense that way it gives us the chance to also go home and do a little
homework and come up with ideas of things they want that you individually might want to add all right so once again if you would please read the four items under wellness community and sustainability see if again one stands out as a really good capturing or if there are several we need to keep one and four are the same again yeah i could say one and four are the same yeah but the initials either one or four yeah um sponsors are in the jericho apologies to foster um so does everybody feel comfortable with keeping number one and eliminating number four yeah right so easy now we have to talk about two and three for a minute but we can we can uh yes so two is practice diversity equity and inclusion and all of its in
events i personally feel that that's a separate one and it's a very admirable goal to keep could we see instead of events could we pick a different word know i think that's the only because they're a better way to say it it's not just meetings but you know no i think i happen to have written that one um and no no no no i i didn't even frankly when i was like oh and i was like oh yeah i wrote it it might not be a better word i just i think that's why i came up with events because i couldn't think of another word but clearly if someone does have a better i just think that that one goes under the diversity yeah rather than under wellness yeah i can go with that how
about it just oh no no that's a really good point yeah i recommend just having number one and scrapping the rest so is there a way to not necessarily completely cross out number two but to move it to get off to the side and look at it again when we get it and um and so the other one the board will ensure equitable policies to promote wellness and nutrition among your individual students i wrote that but my the reasoning behind that was wellness and community are big topics yes as soon as sustainability will get under the rug and no and it will be forgotten that's a remote sustainability from that topic because that itself is something which is independent of the first two if you want to get green ribbon for your schools you have
to work on it but if you combine it with these two focus will be on the first year not the third one could i suggest that maybe that become one of the actions for next month to go with the goal that we create an action for that piece of it because i really do like if you look at the wording of the first bullet it pretty much includes the other aspects you mean an action of something that we would do that was going to be my recommendation as well as as well as the one that was moved to dei but those could be actions that's under the goals because they seem more action items to me than complete goals that's just my personal opinion oh thank you good point we also have to think about
how we're going to be able to monitor them so if we say things like we're going to practice pei we have to be really careful with that right because um what does that mean right and how do you measure that so yeah everyone agreeable with the way we have it here one goal and at this point one potential action okay next what is this again if you would read all these and see which ones can be combined or don't fit or we want to keep i think one and three are very similar yeah i mean one and three are pretty much same thing i think three has that extra sentence i don't know so perhaps delete one and keep three give people a chance to read it together on it i mean like three of
them looked the same i didn't i didn't hear you dr little i said three of them look pretty much the same well yeah yeah one time i think so one friend for the show free has an additional sentence added regarding oversight there's no sentence even mean though but um the whole new idea yeah dr mcclary i i am i i'm a little little i don't really like the sentence about maintaining oversight of the school curriculum i think we have to be careful of we are in charge in what way through policy right their policy we don't we don't oversee the implementation of the curriculum we allocate resources we do like what we did tonight we approve the professional development plan you know like those are things we do and those can be i think we
might want to be careful and especially considering like comments that were made tonight during public expression in terms of what our board does in those areas and what it doesn't do thank you doctor resources in addition to teachers professional growth not just student growth but growth yeah so where are we in terms of which one you want to keep or combine dr litman i think there are many wonderful points up there for my colleagues uh the one that jumps out is me not being there as one of our major responsibilities and that would be student achievement you know talk about individual student growth i mean if i wrote this i would maybe have student academic growth or you know uh there's so many different types of growth the social emotional is true but we talk
about student growth it's that's what i would say it needs to say academic but that's why you need to live abroad like that right so you prefer what the broader it is the more it could be applicable because how do you jug successful success and what it looks different for every student when you talk about student growth it's more applicable when you look at student growth thank you for that to your point dr that could be an activity right we could have one of the activities be specific to academic achievement yeah perfect keyword thank you so i'm hearing we're going to keep number one yep and now are any of the ones that are fun possible action steps or they all just meld into number one or same as one i'm just checking yeah i
think they're the same as pretty much the same so they could be gone again again all right and our next topic is dei and again perhaps do your as you've been doing so well figure out which one kind of represents everything or which ones you want to include or tweak dr mccleary i appreciable at three because it goes a little step further by talking about how an action plan would be of the expectation of the board by this year yeah which i think was what we were you know we're talking about earlier when we said that i think it was board member building that brought it up that um you shared that you attended the dei meeting and that we don't have a plan yet that a plan is going to come out of the
work of the group uh thank you for the input does anybody want to keep or tweak one two or three one two or four yeah i like four but i don't know how you would with the action steps to prove just kind of advocates of citizen you know what i mean i don't know how well okay there's a way someone could think of that sure but how do you measure it that's what i mean yeah yeah i don't think it would it'll be tough i like yeah i like that they go to a city you can't come come i've been in places where we've done that yeah i have to oh no mrs curry i thought he was talking about number four oh i see thank you so that was just my opinion sorry one
two one two and four are gone yep okay then on my end piece of screen does it stop there or do you want it well i think the other one we you kind of capitalized action and then so we knew that we're going to come back to it when we do the action parts [Music] yep it's an action that becomes another action yes so at this point we have so we would delete them at this point because we're just doing the goals right now yeah yeah so we have two potential actions and i think the next step there were a few um other okay that these we need to look at first of all um separately because they don't at the moment fit under the poor strategic plan areas that we created in the beginning
but if anyone can see how any of these other you know very good suggestions could be made to fit somewhere else or if we need to have an entire separate category of others or to see if these actually are your starting point for your work on action plans that's what i was getting by looking at the first i mean the set like policy work or strategic support monitor the implementation the strategic planning process developed by members of our community in support of all learners right so that can be an action step under one of the four areas you have as goals already so this might be your starting point of where you can agree to make them action um items i i support that those are the ones i submitted and i i think i
shared through email that it was just like a different way of thinking because i actually really liked what was already previously submitted but i didn't want to submit the same thing um right so i appreciate the contributions that board member poland and board member kazmir zak wagner i mean the two of them did the majority of the work by submitting the goals um that we've chosen tonight and the only piece that you know i'll mention is that years past we always had a separate goal for um budget and finance but we did include language in each of the other goals about allocating resources um so i agree with what the superintendent said about using that some of this language we can maybe save for [Music] i'm actions with that i like what we have and
it mirrors the strategic planning process which i think is really important are you saying you feel that all of the ones that are there could be actions somewhere else possibly i'm just saying that i don't think we need to add any more additional goals other than what we've already identified well then so so instead of saying other goals it could save potential actions for for now and then when we talk about actions next month i like that and last last question does anyone see any of these instead of being potential actions that they are things that could be eliminated i'm not suggesting that they have to be i'm just wondering if there's any that you see that could not somehow be turned into an action i mean those are just thinking points right so between
now and september meeting that's what our all right is to think about that so i like that okay and there are three points on fiscal oversight the three points out of the a7 on fiscal oversight you can probably boil down to one action item or something like that correct i see yeah because it does come up the wording several times okay all right anyone else have anything to add change all right next so at this point i would like to have someone make a motion to adjourn the goal-setting work session mr biscaglia second dr singh all in favor thank you all right so we are now returning to the regular board meeting may i have a motion to return to public session ms poolen second mrs leatherboro okay so may i have a motion to
appear all in favor all in favor thank you keep reminding me may i have a motion to approve and adopt the district goals in 23b and the board of education goals that we are currently editing in 22c in 23c as they are presented again knowing that we will continue to work on ours um in the september meeting do you have a motion miss poolen second all in favor just for a point of clarity these are the goals right we're approving these goals we're not we're not these aren't draft goals we're approving these goals but then we're going to work on action items yes thank you for the clarification yes that i was thinking of that last page with all the things but no thank you for bringing it up okay can you clarify it again
okay um originally you know we we came up with what we think are our goals but the whole last time when we when we vote we're like can we just okay you're going to vote that that these are the goals and that next month we're going to work on the action yes all right all in favor [Music] thank you carried unanimously and now i will remind everyone that our next board meeting is september 13th and i certainly hope that we as board members family members community members and those who are watching our video have a good start to a new school year and i would ask everyone to [Music] a reminder that i will see each and every one of you on thursday at six o'clock in the same spot we have a motion to
adjourn mr buelon do i have a second mrs leather barrel that does not require a vote correct yes it does all in fact okay thank you [Applause]
