Call the meeting to order. Uh, will you please call the roll, Mr. Filo? >> Mrs. Millette. >> Here. >> Ms. Landon. >> Here. >> Mr. Howard. >> Present. >> Mr. Steninger. Mrs. Webb. >> Here. >> Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, please. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Can I have a motion to approve the agenda as presented? >> So moved. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> Aye. >> The motion is passed. Another motion to approve the minutes of

the Thursday, May 7th, 2026 regular meeting and the Tuesday, May 26th, 2026 work session. >> That's a lot. >> [laughter] >> Give me a second. >> Second. >> I didn't hear it. >> Sorry. >> All right, so >> Ms. Landon, >> motion. Ms. Webb seconded. All in favor? >> Aye. >> The motion is passed. Moving on to board reports, good of the order. We'll start with um, Mrs. Webb. >> Um, the best thing that happened recently is graduation. It was wonderful. It was well done. Becky Zink did a >> Agreed. >> outstanding job. Um it went well backstage. It went well out front and it was it was just great. And handing out diplomas, I I think I told maybe I told Rodney, my favorite part of being on school board. I love it. Uh

the kids were were great and I enjoyed it very much and we have 234 graduates out in the world and that's a good thing. So, it was very, very nice. So, thank you. >> Indeed. All right. Mr. Howard. >> Uh congratulations to the men's and women's track. They had a great season and yesterday the women's volleyball team had a strong outing at the spring tournament at Wayne. About eight or 10 teams were there and uh not necessarily scored, but they played very, very well together. >> Okay. Good. All right. Ms. Landon. >> Okay. I had the privilege of attending quite a few events um over the last month. Um Jazz Fest and it went very well. So, um congratulations to all the students and the staff that put that together. It's a it's an event

that takes many people and it takes months to put together and it's a great fundraiser for the music club. So, um congratulations and thanks to everybody that volunteered for that. Uh culture night at the primary school was a great success. Um if you've never been to the culture night, it's a great event. Um definitely you wouldn't go hungry going to that event, that's for sure. Um there was lots of local uh restaurants that helped participate that evening and uh we want to thank our community and our local restaurants for helping during that evening as well. Um congratulations to our um eighth grade uh girls softball. They're the NBL champions um this year, so way to go, girls. And then congratulations to our girls varsity softball team for going 18 and eight this year. So for

a great season and then congratulations to our boys baseball teams and everybody else that competed during the spring sports. So thank you. >> All right. Welcome everyone. Thank you for joining us for the first part of our meeting tonight. John already did that. Yes. Um Just drive to me. >> I'm sorry. I'm sorry. >> Okay. >> We have course invite you to stay for the entirety of the meeting if you'd like, but we'll completely understand if you'd like to leave after your portion is completed. Um but thank you very much for being here. It's always nice to have guests and it's always our most favorite part to be able to recognize um great things that are going on around the district. Um yeah, so this month was very busy. I just want to give a

shout out to to um Sarah Fulton and Dina Howard for our lovely top scholar event at the beginning of the month. Um Pam Gearhart for putting together our last staff and student of the quarter. Um always one of our favorite times to be able to recognize some of our top students and staff. Um we started a new tradition this year of a district-wide retirement dinner which was held for our retiring staff last week at the Hope Hotel and that was beautiful. It was really nice to be able to Amy, do you remember how many years of service >> we thought were being recognized in there? >> It's like 275 or something >> Yes, insane amounts of years of service from our our retiring teachers that are leaving us with such big shoes to fill. And

then um finally our convocation final day for teachers this past week was a lovely time to step back and recognize all of the accomplishments from the year and our um our district self-recognized teachers and staff. Um people who who within the district were felt to be um high-achieving and wanted to uh receive honors from their peers. So, that's pretty cool. Um last thing I just want to uh announce is um make sure to check out if you have a a little one in the district, um summer lunches will be starting um on Monday. [clears throat] So, um check out the district website for uh dates and times of all the locations where those will be happening. Um make sure everyone gets gets food in their bellies throughout the summer, okay? So, um moving on uh

do we have any visitors to recognize tonight, Mr. Viola? >> No, and we have no one signed up for public comments, either. >> Okay. And then, um Mrs. Gearhart? >> Awesome. Thank you. Good evening. I will clarify summer lunches open to um children ages 1 through 18. So, you don't even have to be school age. If you're 1 years old or older, you may participate in school lunch for the summer. At this time, I would like to invite our athletic director, Kevin Alexander. >> [clears throat] >> The um agenda is wrong due to my error error. We are going to recognize not only our middle school and high school softball teams, but our tennis team and our men's track team. Mr. Alexander. >> Thank you very much, Mrs. Gearhart. Um thank you everyone for being

here and uh as Mrs. Gearhart and Mrs. Landon both said uh our middle school softball team won the MBL tournament for the second year in a row, which is outstanding for them. And our high school softball team is back on their winning ways, winning the division this year. They had a year off from winning that, and now they're back at winning the division. And tonight, we also have two coaches here that won their divisions, and I'm going to call those coaches up and let them speak to you about their team. But, want to first start with our boys track. Coach Barton, if you would come forward and uh the boys track team won the Miami Valley uh Valley division championship this year. So, Coach Barton. >> Thank you. Uh yeah, so this season was very

successful. Uh last year was my first year coaching at Fairborn. Thought we had what it took to win the Valley last year. We fell a little short. This year uh we came through and absolutely demolished Xenia, who was second. It was a great time. Um but then after that uh we continued to compete at districts and we had some regional qualifiers. Jackson Howard was a regional qualifier in uh high jump and the 400. Probably could have had a relay team make it if, you know, district finals didn't conflict with graduation, but, you know. Uh and then Isaiah White, who was a senior, he qualified in discus. And then we also had Jaden Mills, she qualified in long jump. And yeah, those were our season highlights. Yeah, so uh Jackson Howard, down here in the front.

Uh we also have a slew of freshmen. So, if you're on the track team, stand up. Yeah. So, there's one, two, three, four of our freshmen. Uh we had a couple juniors and one of our graduates is also here. So, thanks for coming out, guys. >> Thank you, coach. All right, our next uh division champion was our boys tennis team and Coach Stack. Coach Stack is making this a habit. We were here with him in the fall with the girls. So, congratulations, coach. >> it. >> Yep. >> Um JD and Ethan, if you guys could come down. These are the players that are here representing the team tonight. And um, if you notice some giggling going on, Ethan had like 17 in of hair until today. Um So, we we were like, "Whoa, what's going

on?" Um, no, but it was a great year for the tennis program in general. We had a gender sweep is what I like to call it. The girls winning in the fall, the boys winning in the spring. Um And I'll be honest, no no offense, but with the boys team it was a huge surprise. We lost seven of our top nine players from last year's team. Um, so we had um, like two like letter winners coming back to this year's team. So, my expectations were not super high, but um we had um, Ethan move in from Maryland. JD matured. Um, and you know, some other kids moved in. So, we had I think um, like six first-time letterers this year. Um, I think five were just brand new to the program or four or five

were brand new to the program. Um So, it was a fantastic year. Um, we had to come back from we were down points in our league tournament. And I was just so proud. It's one of those situations where the team I think peaked at the right time and overcame um, a gap that Sydney had on us to um, to win our division. So, nice job, gentlemen. Um, he's not here tonight, but Case Ryan qualified for districts. He's our um second boy to qualify in districts since the '90s. Um, so that is that is awesome and and he's only a sophomore. So, hopefully good things keep happening. Um, and we only had one we had two seniors out of 23 kids. We had two seniors in the program. So, um, hopefully things continue to do good.

Or well, whichever one that's supposed to be Dr. Breckenhoff. Sorry. >> [laughter] >> Summer brain. Summer brain. Yeah. Okay. Yep. All right. Um, I could go on or I could hand it back, Kevin. No, you can you can you can take it. Unless >> I'm good. >> [laughter] >> JD, you got a speech prepared, right? No? No? Okay. All right, thank you coaches. All right, thank you very much. >> Would we like to get a picture with these individuals? Athletes, coaches, come on down. We'd like to get a picture with you. >> [laughter] >> Good job, guys. Yeah. >> Have a good summer. Stay out of trouble. Everybody. >> So next up, I will invite Lori Elliott to come who has brought some students with her to tell us about highly successful eighth grade Washington

D.C. trip. >> Ann Mark Stickford. >> Oh, I didn't see Mark over there. Sorry. Mark Stickford. >> [laughter] [laughter] >> He was unable to go on the trip this year because his wife had his their baby. So he had a really good reason to stay home, but we missed him this year for sure. Should have. I'm pretty sure I asked him and he said no. >> [laughter] >> It's a rule. Just ask Ali. And Lucas. >> [laughter] >> Yeah. Everyone brought their babies. >> Slacker. Jeez. Um so good evening. I just wanted to thank you again for allowing our students to come in and talk about the trip this evening. This year's trip was unforgettable. We learned a lot with history and a lot of walking. Our group this year we had some weather. We

had some um delays with traffic and we had to be flexible thinkers, but over the four days that we were there 74 eighth graders explored some of the most important and historic landmarks, museums, and memorials in America. So tonight we have Eddie Erickson and Emmett Keaton here to talk about some of the highlights from the 2026 trip. >> We visited several museums that allowed us to learn through real artifacts, exhibits, and interactive displays. We visited the National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of American History, the Holocaust Museum. We also visited the National Archives where we saw the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Visiting these museums helped us see how history, science, and important events continue to influence our world today. Our trip included visits to several famous memorials. We

visited the the Lincoln Memorial and stood on the step where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream speech. We also visited the Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and Thomas Jefferson memorials. These memorials help us to better understand the leadership, values, and historical impact of the same most influential people in American history. One important part of our trip was visiting sites honoring American service members. We visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Memorial, World War I Memorial and World War II Memorial. We also visited Arlington National Cemetery and saw the changing of the guard and wreath laying ceremony of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We visited almost We visited Well, we visit We also met 95-year-old Korean War veteran. Visiting these sites helped us understand the importance of honoring those

who served in our country. >> One memorial or memorable experience was visiting Ford's Theatre and watching the One Destiny play. The play shared the story of the people and events surrounding President Lincoln's assassination. Seeing the play in the actual theater where the history occurred made it especially meaningful. We also visited the Kennedy Center, which is one of the nation's leading performing arts centers and honors President Kennedy. >> This year's trip included something new for FMS. For the first time, we visited the Library of Congress along with the Capitol Building. There we learned how laws are created and more about the legislative branch of government, as well as getting to be in the world's largest library. We also visited Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. Going to Washington D.C. gave us the chance to experience

history beyond the classroom. We walked 23.85 miles, learned about our nation's past, and created memories we will always remember. Thank you for listening. We hope you enjoyed learning about our experiences this year and that you will allow FMS tradition to continue for future 8th graders. >> [applause] >> Thank you so much. Board members, do you have any questions for our students or advisors? >> How many students got to go all together? >> 74 this year. >> 74, that's awesome. Wow. And from each of you, what was your personal favorite part? >> My favorite was the National Natural History Museum. >> I really loved the Library of Congress. That was amazing architecture. I thought it was really cool cuz I've only got to see that in movies or online, so that was really cool to see

in person. >> Well, thanks for being such great representatives for us. >> Thank you. Thank you. >> And then for our last presentation tonight, I would like to invite one of our employees, Lucas Geer, to come up and we have Tess, and I'm probably going to say it wrong, so I apologize, Asenjo. She is from the Dream Organization, which is a group of Miami Valley schools that have banded together. They the representatives are mostly personnel directors across different districts and working to recruit candidates into teaching profession. So, Tess, I'm going to invite you up and let you tell us about the scholarship, and then we'll let Lucas tell us a little bit about his experience. I will note Lucas is also in the grow your own state of Ohio program, which unfortunately has ceased to

continue to be funded, but he's one of about 15 Fairborn employees who was awarded that scholarship, and it's a four up to a four-year scholarship, so we already know that Lucas is coming to us for at least four years in the classroom, but we hope for a whole career. >> Okay, thank you so much for having me. Again, I'm Tess Mitchner San Joe. I'm the executive director of Dayton Leadership Academies, but tonight I'm here in my capacity as one of the members of the DREAM Scholarship Committee. The DREAM Scholarship was the founded three years ago with the goal of recruiting both high school seniors and current employees from our partner districts to become teachers. This year's awardee, his application really impressed the scholarship committee because first of all, he has a wealth of experience working

with students, and that showed in his application. He has a commitment to the teaching field and becoming a classroom teacher, which was really reinforced by his letters of recommendation, and it was a unanimous decision to award Lucas the scholarship, so I would like to present tonight. It's my honor to award the $2,000 scholarship from the DREAM Recruitment Staff Scholarship to employee Lucas Geer, correct? Okay, so congratulations. Thank you. And we are thrilled that he is going to become a teacher and is on his pathway. Remind us you have how like how many more years? >> So. I am currently in the process this summer. I am transferring from Sinclair Community College to Franklin University. Um I'm going to try to finish in two years. Three is the more likely option depending on, you know, how

I can work it so that way in three years I'm teaching here in Fairborn High School um while I work uh now at Fairborn Primary School as a mental health assistant. So, within the next three years, hopefully sooner, I will be in the classroom and this scholarship really is going to be so helpful. Um Jeffrey Madden sent me an email and some of the other Grow Your Own Teacher Scholarship recipients and said, "Hey, this is a local opportunity. I think you guys should look into it. If you think it's a good fit for you, I encourage you to apply." And I was actually sitting in the car uh about to walk into work when I saw the email and I I read quickly and I I thought it was very It almost felt like I

was like, "Man, this is the exact thing I've been looking for." You know, the Dream Committee's mission for this area is exactly how I feel about the area. Um when I first applied for the Grow Your Own Teacher Scholarship, in my interview with um Miss Gearhart and Mr. Madden, something I wanted to make really clear is that the reason I wanted that scholarship is because not just my love for the field of education, but my love for Fairborn, for the greater Miami Valley area, growing up here with a mother who's been teaching for almost three decades in Fairborn. Uh I feel like I owe my upbringing, the you know, the the leaders in this district, the leader of my household for me to come back and do what she did for this district and pour

into students. Cuz the way that she poured into me as a mother, I've seen her give that effort to each and one every one of her students. And this scholarship shows that uh their mission to reach students who aren't as privileged and we have so many students in our area who have the talent, have the work ethic, but might not have the resources. So, with the way this scholarship wants to empower educators to get into these fields, get into these classrooms, and advocate for those students, that's something that that is important to me. So, when I saw that was their mission, I was honored to apply, let alone to receive it. So, this is going to be a great help for me and my ever-growing family. I welcomed my first son less than 2 weeks

ago, and this this scholarship is going to help me greatly. Um so, I wanted to say thank you uh to the district, to the Dream Scholarship Committee, um and really to to this area that I call home in Fairborn and the greater Miami Valley area. So, thank you so much. >> Thank you. It's so nice to meet [applause] you. Now, you can see why he won the scholarship, and you're very fortunate to have him in the district. So, congratulations, and thank you for having him. >> Thank you so much. >> Picture? >> Yes. >> Thank you for the opportunity to bring these um bits of information and updates to you. I think that they really reflect the good things that are going on in our district. And that is all that I have for this

evening. >> That's wonderful. Thank you. All right, moving on to budget and finance. Mr. Filo's recommendation is made to approve uh the receipt of the attached monthly financial report and the surplus and sale of a few items. Um can I have a motion, please? >> So moved. >> Second. >> All right. Please call the roll, Mr. Filo. >> Mrs. Webb. >> Yes. >> Ms. Landon. >> Yes. >> Mr. Howard. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Milad. >> Yes. Motion has passed. Administrative reports and superintendent recommendations go through to page 10. We have um some athletic supplementals, some summer camp things. Um workers for summer stuff. Um >> All kinds of fun things. Um And then uh finally a service contract in there, too. Um can I have a motion, please? >> So moved. >> Second. >> All

right. Call the roll, please, Mr. Filo. >> Specifically, the item is XA through F. >> Yep. >> Ms. Landon. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Webb. >> Yes. >> Mr. Howard. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Milad. >> Yes. And as Mr. Filo noted, that um A through F, G stands alone, which is the um soccer girls varsity coach. Um which can I have a motion for? >> So moved. >> Second. And please call the roll, Mr. Filo. >> Mrs. Webb. >> Yes. >> Ms. Landon. >> Yes. >> Mr. Howard. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Milad. >> Abstain. The motion is passed. All right, gifts and donations. Ms. Landon, please. The Fairborn City Schools Board of Education would like to gratefully acknowledge the following gifts and donations.
