i'd like to call the november 22nd northwest school board meeting order if we could please rise i pledge allegiance to the fire of the united states the republic for which it stands one nation under god and indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you we have any additions or deletions of the agenda we do uh a couple things here just want to introduce our new treasurer she'll be uh actually she's starving she started today first official day this is steph dangles she worked at uh stark county for the last how many years 12 years when he gets set to retire sometime this winter so everyone here is stephanie [Applause] um second thing i i thought we would talk very briefly about the calendar i know it says at the end of the board just

to have a discussion on that [Music] the administrative team discussed this with nta uh also i know you've seen this this calendar um we're trying to keep it in line with as much as possible with the schools who to attend uh rj greg trying to keep that very very close and we've managed to do that there really isn't much wiggle room other than the fact that once you determine when we're going to start school in school and take a look at christmas break we take a look at spring break and that's that's the that's really where the discussion comes in from the three options that we looked at and um just to point out a couple things one school start it does start early uh not any earlier to me i i'm still i guess

i'm old-fashioned i'm used to starting school after labor day and 10th but we can't i know we can't do that um but also christmas break was broken up the one version had us ending school on december 23rd this one has us the last day uh as december 21st returning on january 5th traditionally we've had we're trying to stick with spring break for the last week of march that is a little different because uh we are having with testing going on we thought we maximized our time during that we'll be very busy during that month and we also will have spring break the first week of april tied in with the monday after after easter so any comments for discussion this isn't going to be set in stone right now we're just discussing it this is

one step of that as we are contractually obligated to do so and then we'll uh try to lock this up for next year i can't believe we're looking at the 2022 school year but we'll have that set of stone as january okay all right thank you next thing i had one thing added to uh for tonight the addition of the resolution establishing educational requirements for substitute teachers for this school year last year i'm not even sure if we did that here but but many many schools we are we are struggling with substitute teachers we're struggling with substitute everything cooks custodians bus drivers all schools are going through this this is not this is not just happening here at northwest it's happening all over the state it's it's been so significant that governor dewine signed into

law sb1 which it's emergency legislation it'll be good for this school year officially june 30th of 2022. and what it does it allows us to hire subs who may not possess a post-secondary degree of the substitute teacher for the remainder of the 21-22 school year providing that they meet the specific requirements we have very specific requirements for that we just are talking about uh an individual who might meet the needs or school's own set of educational requirements and and for that we're still talking about what that might look like the individual should also be deemed a good moral character and the individuals should successfully complete a criminal record check as prescribed in section 33 19 39 of the revised code so we still be very careful that this would be for something that we may

use someone who is who's very familiar with our daily schedule it might be someone like an a perhaps we could we can use them as a substitute teacher it might be um you know someone who's had a lot of experience dealing with our kids who was very familiar who was known to be a person of of high character someone that you know we're not going to just walk down you know to the local gas station just grab someone in the store and ask them to come so we're going to be very careful about that you know we we've expressed concerns about someone coming in to be able to do things like take attendance to uh walks uh children when appropriate to the cafeteria during lunch time to manage a classroom there are certain things and

nuances that teachers have that you get you can't just grab anyone so if we do consider someone and these days i think we ought to um we would take you know we would take the care to prepare them to go into the classroom as a substitute teacher so this is the first step all right that's all i have i actually have one more thing um i just want to say before we move on thank you to mr schilling tonight will effectively be his last school board meeting i want to say personally thank you for all the work you've done over the last four years thank you for being a part of this group that hired me to allow me to be superintendent here it's very important to me selfishly but but also thank you for

all the work you've done i this is a guy who cares a great deal for the students of the school district and his community i've seen that over and over and over he's going to be sorely missed and we all just want to say thank you tonight so thank you very much [Applause] hey we look forward to your obviously your our our relationship continuing to grow and uh and your support for the district i know that will that will never be diminished we have this for you tonight to make sure you grab that we also have cake hidden in the back for you afterwards today for cake i i'm looking forward to that part too so thank you mr schilling thanks okay yep and that's all i have thank you sir all right i need

a motion to approve the agenda second any question roll call mr goliani yes mrs gerhart yes mr shelley yes this is sparky yes mr gingerberg yes i'd like to recognize anything they recognize any visitors will now speak to an agenda related not for a gender related item all right okay can i give an introduction here we talked about this last board meeting trying to keep our board meetings uh very positive and uplifting we've asked uh the principals to include some things that are that are good that are happening in the schools so tonight we're very proud to introduce a northwest middle school band led by mrs good also i saw mr emlers here i have to tell you i'm so excited about where the direction of the arts i got to see trouble in tumbleweed

last week was that last weekend yes it was last weekend and uh just seeing the band perform every friday night you guys have done an excellent job i feel like our arts program it's really they're all moving in the right direction and has a lot to do with with you guys as our teachers just as good as you as the instructor at the most we appreciate all your effort and kids thank you for coming tonight we appreciate that we're excited to hear you play [Applause] so [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] wow [Music] [Applause] um [Music] so [Music] my [Music] [Applause] uh [Music] um so [Applause] thank you guys [Applause] you've received the minutes from the special meeting we had on october 12th as well as our regular meeting of october 25th that's what i have

for you this month that's it motion julie julian any questions for dan paul mrs sparky yes mr spearheart yeah mr shelly yes yes mr david yes okay uh we have i'll just let all these together we have uh resignations appointments and assignments and classified subs for the recommendation we're going to accept the resignation of layman army head mechanic effective november 3rd for appointments and assignments we have recommendations to employ david smucker as the head mechanic recommendation to employ tiffany morgan uh recommendation to employ patricia byler recommendation to employ art kayla kayla thank you recommendation to employ the following for after school and tutoring uh cathy middleton marybeth mans brown rhonda oser and for classified subs for bus driver we have uh angela hill i'll move on if okay with the supplemental contracts as well yeah

doing it all the time okay we can do that uh recommendation for the following people will be awarded supplemental contracts for the 21 22 school year hannah guessman smart for all three nancy dinkins seventh nick ninkins thank you seventh and eighth graders boys junior varsity soccer coach sir uh serena that's correct serena wise assistant marching band director thank you very much i need a motion for a b and [Music] is the automated system that we use for call offs if somebody gets a day off for sickness or a doctor's appointment or something like that and then it automatically will call the substitute list and have to try and fill the open position any other questions mr giuliani yes this is sparky yes this is gearhart yes mr shelly yes mr gilbert yes letter e we

have our commission to approve educational requirements based on sb1 for substitute teacher for the remainder of the 21 22 school year and also and also we can lock the the last two together if that's okay uh the northwest high school band trip to orlando's recommendation to approve the band trip to orlando from february 16th through 2023. now you'll notice that's a few years away we do that every every four years so all students who are interested in which it applies they would be able to fundraise to get the trip done questions so just to go back to viewer explaining the resolution that's only for this four years that is correct and it's effectively i think it's the exact date is june 30th 22. okay thank you thank you how big of a problem is it

getting i mean we have a lot of classes that have to be covered by teachers we do it's it's becoming i guess it depends on the day of the week you know mondays and fridays seem to to require more subs and there's no rhyme or reason why people are sick they they don't make it to work so i can't even say it's one feeling it's just it just whenever it happens it happens the problem with that is not so much are people getting ill as much as there just aren't as many subs out there once once the pandemic hit you know the numbers dropped people didn't want to take the chance and they haven't come back yet so our hope is that you know when this finally goes away whenever it goes away completely that

we'll be able to have people come back i think we're trying to be creative and come up with different things besides using our own people to cover classes that type of thing and this is this is one step thank you any other questions roll call mr schilling yes mrs barkey yes this is gerhardt yes mr hillsberger yes paulian yes all right i would like to before i make the record recognition visitors i'd like to congratulate adam sohil on winning the election to join our school board come january 1. so it's good good to have you thank you and then do we need to decide to adam he's already he joined us for the ohio school board convention and we had we had a good time learned a lot brought us some that was more important

that's important [Music] yes can i go back to the calendar for a second yes you made a comment and i have never asked anybody why is there a reason why we can't start after labor day not saying that i think it should happen now but is there a reason why i know years ago it was tied to football but i know there's also school districts that don't start before labor day i think for us to go that would be a thing though the situation we'd have to talk with the other what what we're trying to do is to keep in line with the other school districts in the county right so that would be something i i can i could bring that to our next superintendent we'll talk about how to say hey have we

ever talked about that and they'll have different reasons why but um the trend seems to be starting earlier earlier and trying to get done by uh by memorial day there's no there's no effective reason we can we can do it anytime as long as we have the hours registered okay thank you while we're on that is there only one teacher work day before the kids come yes well we we have so many days a contractual contraction that we're contractually obligated to follow so that gives us room for one day before the school year begins there is some wiggle room again like all things that would be something that we have to work through that with nta at the appropriate time there's always wiggle room and i think it's always to me there it's all the

more people you have before the school year starts sometimes it's more beneficial rather than do that in the middle of the school year so it's something that we can certainly look into i know our daughter teaches in florida they have an entire week before school starts but she also goes to school on this calendar it would be august 1st is when she starts but i i do i do see i mean there are benefits to having us there's something worth talking about thank you what's a waiver day a waiver day is uh a day that uh that we give where is that in the calendar february 17th we have teachers come in like before the school starts we have them come in to do in service for us to to have that to happen we

we give them a way today to make up for that so they teach them waiver for us that means that they're october 10th is the one he's talking about foreign service on their own waiver day is the kids don't come but als all certified and classified staff work that day and we do professional development with them on those on that day yeah that's the one in february right yep anything else on the calendar thank you thanks all right we do have uh i like to recognize visitors who like to speak to any other items we've got a couple that um mentioned just remind you we are we do try to limit to two minutes um since we have a couple we can be a little flexible just a couple we can be flexible in that

mindy mcneil um a couple things first i was wondering um who decides curriculum for all the school um what standards do we use and our teachers including libraries what books who decides what books go in do parents have the opportunity to view any of that or know any of that how do we know that okay well you have a couple questions the standards are our state base so we stick it uh very carefully with that and how we prepare our our teaching uh for reading lists um those are those change a lot from year to year there is some there are some latitude teams to be able to choose choices as long as they need the out of state standards okay okay and last question is how would a parent be able to find out

more information about it i think if you if uh well you can our our curriculum person is here you can contact ms clark over clark anytime at the board office and talk with any specific questions you might have um if you know you can also talk to your child's teacher about things that are going on in class anytime you have questions the best place to start is with that i didn't know we actually had a curriculum who is it perfect okay and one of the things after a little incident that occurred in class i um just wanted to write down some thoughts on why a parent would be hesitant to vaccinate their child i feel like we're having a little bit of a disconnect maybe in the classroom it has come up a few times

in a few different classes of my i have two children in the system so um and you know it's a touchy subject obviously but um i i would love to get this in everybody's hands and maybe just email it to you that would be fine but um i to read all of this it's two pages long but i i kind of expect for students to not understand you know maybe even be a little bit antagonistic to somebody who comes from a home where they're not vaccinated yet again a couple incidents of like that have occurred so um i don't expect teachers to be had that way or to allow for that to happen in the classroom and that's where my concern comes in and so i just think that maybe some of our teachers don't

understand what the big deal is and so just very clearly i try to you know including links why a parent would be hesitant just some of those would be there's no long-term research available yet um it doesn't mean that anybody's anti-vaxxer or conspiracy theorist they just want to see long-term research before they decide to do something permanent to their bodies or to their child's body concerns to safety you know obviously we want to know is it safe we've heard of some side effects as rare as they might be we've heard of some side effects and so that doesn't sound very exciting obviously especially when we're talking about struggling 99.8 of chance of surviving the virus so i kind of have to just weigh risk of life factors uh do i have a bigger possibility of

having an adverse effect from the vaccine than i do from the actual virus and those are just you know that's i don't feel like there's anything wrong with the parent asking those those big questions um so i don't know if there's a way to get some of this information through teachers hands that are frustrated maybe with students who are not vaccinated yet but i don't want for one i don't want my my children going to school feeling discriminated against or you know targeted in any way nothing physical has happened to them they've not been hurt physically in any way but um i just i'm big into prevention and i just would like to prevent the situation from like that from that happening so well no thank you thank you yeah email it to us all

of our if you get on the school website all of our emails are in there but make sure sean gets that as well i did okay but i will i will picture i did not send it to all of you so i will do that and if it's helpful great or if you have any other questions you know i don't speak for every parent i don't but um i'd be happy that you answered we appreciate appreciate your time thank you ma'am thank you sarah simon i'll be fast this actually kind of goes along with this um and this you know i'm the chairman of mom's liberty and a couple members brought this up um and i get it's time for kids magazine like i get it um but there was an article in there kind

of like propaganda for the vaccine for the kids and i just want to make guess where it was in there and it's kind of long maybe he's mine said that would be really nice if our kids go to school and not have that kobe vaccine propaganda here because it's a parent's decision and even other things like politics because i've heard that happening to teachers talking about politics it'd just be nice where kids came to a safe space and left all those divisions uh then we're seeing the outside world at the door and i don't know if this has been discussed with faculty i just wanted to bring this to your visit i get it in the magazine but you know our kids are kind of getting diverted with this stuff constantly it'd be really nice

to come here and get away with them so thank you thank you sarah when did that come out i think it was earlier this week that it was supposed to be last week so a couple parents were concerned about it it's pretty obviously pushing in favor of the vaccine it's time for kids i mean most likely nobody even knew it was in there when they handed it out but i just want to make you aware of it jim it's a current events article yeah it wasn't read discussed or anything and we're actually going to probably stop getting the current events articles because there's oftentimes articles because it's current events and we get parent emails so we're probably just going to stop the articles all together okay well it's too complicated if you can choose what

we read and what we don't read so we're going to eliminate that from the curriculum yep okay did you hear that sir yes i did thank you time to um in a question okay so yeah what's your name my name is jeannie bolling okay g bowling yes v-o-w-l-i-n-g okay so um my children are raised they did go to go to northwest but i'm very concerned about what is going on in the schools and i guess my question very concerned about the critical race theory wondering if that is anything that is going to be coming into the school is it in the school now and how would we know if there were well the only way it would change like i mentioned before was take very carefully to the ohio state standards which you can find

very openly through the department of education their website okay our teachers follow that very carefully through curriculum mapping and we don't we don't strike them so that's very helpful i didn't know that i didn't know that um yeah and i appreciate i appreciate all of you that are that are doing your job and doing a good job here i like the idea of doing school after labor day too and giving teachers more time to be able to set up their classrooms because they're already so overburdened that they have more time thank you very much so let me let me say before we before we enter uh thank you all for coming we appreciate that very much i know it's the season of thanksgiving um so i hope you enjoy time with your family um we

hope that our teachers and our staff can enjoy that time with their family your kids can just take some time off and relax and uh big 15 days when they come back before the christmas break but um i know that's kind of a stretch at some point you just kind of push through it but but thank you all for coming thanks for being part of our community and part of our system you figured out by now we we love this district as much as anybody and we'll strive to do everything we can do to continue to fight for it and continue to love it as much as we can so thank you for coming we appreciate it mr ramos that the tires is [Music] [Laughter] all right thanks how much cake did you get all

right so you're all welcome to come
