001recording in progress we'll get started here in a second we'll let the folks online meander in well all right i think we'll get started welcome to the august 8th regular board meeting uh coming at you live from harman auditorium and live via zoom um this kind of wraps the end of summer from a school perspective anyway we start classes on august 17th is that right next wednesday makes sense opening day for the teachers and staff on the 15th so by the time we meet again in september we'll be off and running um so welcome and uh jeffy would you call the role please dr middleton here mr schwederman here mr wilson here miss kauai here and mr duo here can everyone please stand and join me the pleasure of agents i pledge allegiance adopt this

002evening's agenda so luke mr wilson aye dr middleton aye mr smith aye mr ride aye aye mr dewell aye aye motion pleased to approve the minutes of the july 11th regular board meeting and work session and the special meeting held on july 28th please second tiffany dr middleton aye mr schwederman aye mr wilson aye ms kawaii aye and mr dewell hi uh combinations of public comments dr ramy thank you uh we have 12 new staff members this year and they just went through new staff orientation mrs couch put that together and i did a wonderful job a great group of new teachers that were excited about getting into the classroom and even though we did some alice training actually this afternoon one of our our newbies was in there learning a little bit about alice

003so uh certainly a warm welcome to all of our new staff members this year not quite the 60 that mr swederman has over across town but that's a great great number for us congratulations to adam julen hick and the oakwood high school marching band on a successful summer concert on august uh wasn't august 28th that would have been uh maybe july 28 at matt hummon and you can see the marching band in action on friday nights during the home football games and at the band's end of the season concert that would be october the 26th at seven at matt humming stadium uh excited about that i'm not sure they're going to be there to jamboree this week but uh pretty fired up about the football season and getting started and that's always you know school

004is just right around the corner with that jamboree coming up and then the ice cream social is also a sunday afternoon so many of you are scooping ice cream with me should be a lot of fun in the city council um let's see i think that's uh i think that's it for now uh no registered public comments of dr lane curriculum show teams please yes tonight we have representatives from his spidey club and that stands for students promoting inclusion diversity and equity and education they're going to present on the club's purpose what they accomplished in the last year 21-22 and some of their plans for the upcoming year 22-23 and tonight we will meet maggie o'hara natalia alvarez alvarez yes sarah connell erin geller carter staff and ella plymouth so if you guys would like

005to come we also have hannah brown kind of raise your hand this is amazing and like so thank you both for being so before we start um we'd all like to give a big thanks to the board and to dr waller for giving us the opportunity to present this evening so all six of us here are a part of spidey which stands for students promoting inclusion diversity and equity through education first we're going to talk about what is nccj nccj is the national conference for community and justice of greater dayton and it is a diversity equity and inclusion non-profit organization that's dedicated to eliminating bias bigotry and all forms of discrimination such as prejudice racism etc so for nccj we have three pillars that we use for our work they lay the foundation of what

006our work really is and so these three pillars are first workplace development second community advocacy and third youth leadership development so in terms of youth leadership development this includes school-based and regional programs so think spidey and score which we'll get into in the next slide so as previously mentioned spidey we promote inclusion diversity and equity and all of this is through education which is very important for all of us so spidey it is a student-led group and our goal as high school leaders is to work with the local sixth grade classes at smith and hartman to discuss and to present our curriculum about activities inserting surrounding inclusion diversity trust and leadership while spidey is a student-led group and organization the nccj staff act as advisors to us and assist us in developing programs in the

007curriculums that we present to both the sixth grade students at harman and smith elementary so in may we did have the wonderful opportunity of going to smith and to hartman and we visited all of the sixth graders there and we shared our curriculum that we all cannot strive how important this is but we all had um a task in developing this curriculum and we made it special so that it could really touch on the heavy subjects that we think are really important and that can make oakwood a better community and feel everybody and make everybody feel more accepted and include and included in this so for more background information spidey was started in 2010 and it's modeled after score which stands for student group on race relations and that started in shaker heights ohio so

008score it's been a student-led group with the high school students teaching younger students for almost 40 years and so as finding members we really value what this has been modeled as so for spidey we go over most of the topics that were presented in score and we model off of that curriculum as well so now i'm going to pass it on to maggie hello thank you for having me um so back in january aaron carter and i we visited shader heights ohio where score is based and we kind of just got a feel of what kind of they do with their children when they visit the elementary school and since score is very much like spidey kind of wanted to implement what they do into our spidey so we can see like how they run

009their classrooms and like how they interact with kids and everything like that and so um as i said me aaron and carter went and we shadowed the score students throughout the whole day and we saw what they did in the classrooms and and we saw um what kind of activities they did and so we kind of wanted to base our our curriculum off that so that is what we did when we went to harmon and smith the first time and we also went into a meeting with them their first with their meeting that they did and we saw how they uh led their meetings it was very much student-led and that's kind of what it wanted what we wanted to do as buddy so for the fast for the last couple months of school we

010our um meetings were more student-led and we would like create a lesson plan for what we were doing for the meeting and we presented it and we that's how we run our meetings from now on more student life instead of hannah and lake kind of running the meetings so now we're going to move it over to aaron where she's going to talk about what we kind of want to accomplish and what we've already accomplished yeah so from our perspective um like as a club we all kind of did what we wanted to do this year and more on a weekly basis we met in the high school hannah and lake would come in um and in those meetings we really just planned our curriculum what we wanted to do while also just kind of talking

011about topics that were important to us and what was affecting us in the school we did icebreakers and got to know each other better so that was something that getting on a consistent basis of meeting cleaning that curriculum was something we were all really proud of in addition to that some members from oakwood as well as deca and yellow springs met once a month on sundays for around four hours to kind of work on that curriculum more get in touch with what other schools were doing with their sliding curriculum that was something that also was a great opportunity for us we were proud to be able to work with other schools just to gain more knowledge on what was going on then in february maggie and carter spoke at a freshman challenge about power of

012words so we also put together that curriculum as a group which was something we were proud of doing we think it kind of spoke well to the purpose of the freshman challenge and from there we went to timber classrooms to like further this message we put together that curriculum ourselves just about games icebreakers and conversations that we had in those classrooms we also tried to recruit board members during that and then lastly kind of what we were wanting to do the whole year we went to the sixth grade classrooms as mentioned before that went really well we got a lot of positive feedback from that i know just talking with all of us like the connections we formed with the sixth graders in just one day was something that was really awesome and it was

013a good day we kind of next year want to work towards more like having a curriculum that kind of glows throughout the year but since we only had one day we touched on a lot of different topics just like trusting your classmates um respecting each other learning about each other's differences just through games icebreakers and different conversations so now we're going to pass to carter on where we're wanting to go this year spidey is ready to hit the ground running this school year and we plan to continue having weekly meetings at oakwood high school and we also continue her plan to continue having sunday meetings once a month with other spidey students from schools such as yellow springs deca dixie and troubled mass and we also plan to visit open sixth grade classrooms three times

014this upcoming school year and we also plan to develop our program more yeah so um why are you inspiring so i personally have been sweaty because i got the email and i honestly could not pass it up i noticed that i thought oakwood needed a change of this sort and i just really want to be a part of that um so why is fighting important in norway so i think that spidey is important in our vlog because it's like a good idea to build kindness and trust and equity among students so that's easier to move forward in that school spidey's impacted me because it's given me a way where i can educate others on how to be accepting of differences in change and i just think it's a great thing overall it's impact impacted me

015very well we'd like to thank you again very much for having us and that is the presentation if you have any questions uh feel free to ask any of us we're happy to answer do you have a like a particular story or an event or as you were going through this training that really kind of stuck out to you i can answer that so i was one of the students who went to school this year in shaker heights cleveland um which as was mentioned student group on race relations and it's a very similar group to kind of like what we do that's what we're modeled off of and we got the opportunity to attend like one of their training sessions in one of their meetings which was awesome in general like meeting all the people

016but a particular story that really stuck out to me was one of the students was saying um in one of their activities they did they were supposed to go around and ask random people like do you know what score is and tell them about it and um they talked about how every member in their community in shaker heights was like oh we already know what that is like we don't need to explain that to you and that was something that stuck out to me because it was such a good community wide thing it had such deep-seated roots in shaker heights and it impacted everyone in the community not even the elementary school students that they presented to and i think building something in oakwood that affects everyone that much um with the great lessons that

017are being taught here is something that i would love to do i think all of us would love to do so just that general love for score that shaker heights has and the impact it has on that community i would love to bring so the the relationship with nctj will that continue also as part of your spidey um plans for the upcoming year yeah yeah okay and how many uh aside from six of you that are here are there more members of your group right yeah yeah about ten more yeah okay right i think this year we'll be doing a big recruitment push at the beginning of the year last year was really our pilot here so the focus was really building a a group of consistent students i mean out of those 16 students

018uh probably 16 of the 16 were at lunch every single week committing that hour of their time and so we really concentrated this year on building a small concentrated group of really strong leaders in the school so that next year we can branch out um shaker heights in score uh they have about 250 high school members of their store um it's a little bit larger in district but you know there's potential to really grow the mass thank you that's awesome and this is nine through 12. so anyone in high school can belong to this is that right right yeah in the junior high about yeah currently there's nothing existing in the junior high that has been some conversations um really what mcc day is working on and we've been working very closely with dr waller

019and the other principals is figuring out kind of what is that continuum of care to provide to a young person and so that when a student gets introduced and is introduced to spidey by the lessons in the sixth grade what do they get in seventh and eighth grade and then how do they get introduced to spidey or agents of change or some of our other programs once they get into high school so we are working with the district right now to figure out what can we invent within the middle school we have a changing in the middle anti-bullying program something that some of our other districts are doing is they are taking the society students who usually teach the sixth grade curriculum and they're actually utilizing those spidey students to actually co-teach the changing the

020middle program with us in their middle school um kind of giving this idea that for your sixth grade in seventh grade then eighth grade students the thing that you're looking forward to is joining ninth grade where you can then become a member well thank you all for coming in i have one more comment i just i just want to encourage you um i think it's awesome the work that you're doing at the local level you want to make the community uh more inclusive more build more trust leadership and also keep in mind that equity diversity and inclusion is a highly marketable skill that as you were going out into the workforce these are things that folks are looking for on your resume on your resume on your linkedin you can actually go and after this

021you can go and get even trainings and certifications uh in areas of equity diversity and inclusion so hope that i hope your journey won't end at the end of high school uh but you'll you'll you'll see how it applies in the rest of your life especially in your professional life and you continue on i think it's awesome thank you thank you thank you yes thanks for coming in it takes a lot of courage to come and present to us yeah good job thank you all right let's move forward we're here to board reports and rumor has it mr wilson we have a couple i got a couple so let's start with uh the alumni association working with reps on class websites to post uh reunion details save the dates and update missing info so just

022doing phenomenal work of going on and connecting with as many folks as they can and bringing back folks into the poll communicating with class reps in collaboration with osf to inform them of important dates details and events for home uh the upcoming homecoming weekend uh sending out special back to school alumni email including information about uh cbl reunions athletic boosters and more uh they're also starting to collect submissions for september alumni newsletters so if you're having a submission for the alumni newsletter please do so uh sharing detail on social media about alumni games fundraisers and homecoming you know we haven't connected with alumni on the alumni association on social media they do great stuff uh the class of 1970 was in town for building and tours i saw that on social media uh on july

02322nd to 24th looks like a great time uh the tour was led by dr waller then they also had self-guided tours of parliament and uh pictures from their visit could be found on their social media and they're actively working on uh reunion contact list assistance cbl boolean tours photos reading slideshows so if you know anyone who is actually not part of that it's it's difficult to go out and comb through old everything and try to get in contact with folks so if you have someone uh please get connected with the alumni association they're doing great work and they continue to work with the oakland schools foundation on the floorish campaign including testimonials from alumni and community members and newsletters emails and things like that and let me also tell you about the work that the

024oakland schools foundation is doing so the osf board of trustees has welcomed two new trustees in july uh ashley hackett and josh hyde they will be joining the hr and nominating committee and the finance committee respectfully that's a lot of work um they continue to expand their community partnerships including a team of the 2022 tour de gem wright brothers classic which is an annual cycling event to raise funds for local non-profits i don't know if we have any cyclists up here or down there in the audience but if you're interested uh this year's team is being captained by steve roddenwa ron roth i'm sorry i hope i said that right ron roth who is writing in honor of his nephew lance corporal josh leisure uh oakwood high school 2019 the team is currently looking for

025volunteers and riders as well as donations and all funds raised will go directly back to support the osf grants scholarships and programs another exciting partnership with the oakwood band alumni group is fundraising uh to name the new band room with the performing arts wing uh katie darwell who was working closely with the osf yes you know her yes i know her all right the beginning of the school year is a busy time for osf programs including the fall grant cycle and partnership with the oakwood school oakwood junior high school and high school pto carmen pto and the fine arts boosters grant applications are open until september 23rd and information has been sent directly to all oakwood teacher staff and administrators will be looking for uh those emails but if you as a parent know a

027offered a match opportunity uh for up to five hundred thousand dollars for all gifts over uh the summer and fall of uh two hundred thousand 000 mass dollars remain so and then last month's formal partnership between osf and oakwood uh schools signaled the next phase of the campaign from fundraising toward moving towards groundbreaking with the goal of construction beginning in december of 2022 and expect the completion of the performing arts wing in the spring of 2024 so very exciting and osf continues with the goal to break brown and we got that too all right we're good and that concludes my reports thank you mr wilson so for uh athletic boosters they're kicking off their membership drive with ice cream social on the coming sunday the 14th um and they'll be selling spirit wear there and

028then you can be looking you know at all the home football games they'll have their shop set up there and just on a note that kind of ties in with sports and alumni news um the boys soccer has their alumni soccer game i believe girls soccer too i need double check but i know for sure the boys night um soccer game is coming up at 5 30 on saturday the 13th lane stadium and they're gonna celebrate 50 years of soccer so but yeah this should be fun check it out anyone else i don't have any reports technology of course the technology committee has been meeting monthly since february with the exception of july um to work towards potential goals relating to our technology blueprint and the themes of equity honing security and future technology the

029june meeting covered the last area the last theme of future technology we discussed a number of items including cloud technologies artificial intel intelligence health technologies blended learning and more and the impact that those areas of technology may have on the district and any potential goals of the committee a overall technology related goals document is in the process now that being finalized um and hopefully i'll be able to present that and share that more in september with you um they'll be shared electronically with the committee for us to take a look at and we do have a meeting scheduled it's monday the 15th i think it's at four o'clock in the afternoon and so we'll get an update and that's probably we'll have that opportunity to look at that so that's our technology update and then
