[Music] it's not chilling there but i'm not sure why but we don't have any videos there's really nothing important oh it's fine [Music] uh yes we've got about three minutes we'll get started okay yes thank you curriculum thank you uh i'll give the zoom participants a second to get organized and we'll get started so they can see and we just can't see them or see how correct okay good good well i think we'll get started uh welcome everyone to the regular meeting of the other city schools september 13th um where we are live from the board of education office and streaming uh live view zoom where i know we have uh a good number of participants so with that what you call the world please is the united states of america and to the republic

for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all as our new oakland city schools board of education mr wilson hi the star aye mr duo aye mr peale motion approved appointment official okay mr sweden um after i read the oath you just need to answer i do do you solemnly swear or firm that you will support the constitution of the united states in the constitution of the state of ohio and that you will faithfully and in partially discharge your duties as a member of the board of education of the oakwood city school district montgomery county ohio to the best of your ability and in accordance with the law is now in effect being hereafter to be enacted during your continuance and set office and until your successor is elected

agenda [Music] take a motion to approve the minutes from the oakwood board of education regular meeting of monday august 9th 2021 and special meeting of august 27th and september 2nd 2021. sorry twice congratulations to oakwood high school athlete lily mccloskey for receiving the 2021 swbal fred purple scholarship very deserving congratulations also this week is national arts and education week and it's been highlighted on social media and lots of different ways and parts of the big part of what we do here in oakwood that's the visual arts the performing arts and we spend a lot of time and effort in supporting that and oakwood has a long long history of supporting the arts and we continue to do that in all kinds of different ways this week is just a great way to spotlight those efforts

so share that as one of the points super so public comments i have three um i'll take them in the order that was received and we'll begin uh with mr irwin what was the first put in the second hand okay um i'm gonna do what i always tell my kids not to do i have some notes on my phone i'm gonna occasionally glance down at that doesn't mean anybody just for you sir and for the other two speakers you'll have three minutes three minutes so i'll try to give you a heads up towards the end if need be appreciate it so when i go to the uh the district's edi page and i look at the video uh at the top of that page i see people who i respect who i respect and i

admire and i see them talking about their intentions for the edi program i do not question their intentions and i do not question their motives however i do have some questions about the specifics of the edi program one of the things that video says is that uh they will be putting out an action plan that action plan has not been put up on that web page i uh i have some questions some specifics about the origin of this program the definitions of the key terms in the program the metrics by which we by which we we motivated ourselves to engage in this program by which we we will track the progress of this program the methods by which we action those metrics and the scope of the program so in terms of the origin i

would like to know what specific event or what specific conditions motivated this district to create this program in the first place for definitions the terms equity diversity and inclusion mean different things in different contexts to different people and i'd like to see exactly what those definitions are for the purposes of this program for the metrics i'd like to know how the mess how the district is going to measure or has measured or assess the level the presence or the absence of equity diversity and inclusion in the school district i'd like to know if these are based on objective facts or if they're based off of opinion surveys is there a sliding scale or statistical test by which we measure the strength of our of what we conclude from these surveys i'd like to know if

the if the district has a way of measuring the uncertainty associated with their assessment of these metrics for the methods i would like to know what steps the district is taking or planning to take or considering taking in order to change these met what i assume are some metrics driving this program 30 seconds sir what evidence is there that these steps will have their desired effects i'd like to know if this is why timber time has increased this year to the detriment of instruction time like to know what priority this program is getting and finally the scope i'd like to know what the desired end stage for this program is whether it's a one-time program whether it is intended to be periodic whether it is conditions based or whether it is perpetual and indefinite now

there's a universal rule of writing that rule is show don't tell what i've seen from the district so far on that webpage is a lot of telling about why this is the next right thing as i said i respected admire the people in that video and i hope that in hearing these questions the board and the district will take a look at showing that this is the next right thing and showing what the actual plan is so thank you very much for your time great thank you just for my context i could better direct your questions who have you spoken to before tonight uh at the district i very briefly uh spoke to the high school principal that was on a related item but i have not yet reached out to anybody on the board

this is my first time coming uh first time coming to any one of these so if this isn't the right way to do it i'm a rookie so you're gonna have to have one patient it helps work better contextualized i am so far most most of the detailed communications that i have seen and heard about this have been from other parents have been in the oakwood register and have mostly come from people who are opposed to this program i have not made up my mind on it because as far as i can see i don't see enough specifics or facts uh to to warrant any solid conclusion one way or the other great thank you thank you uh next up we have mr hoffman same three minutes sir and i'll try to give you a

heads up if uh you tip into that gray area thank you um i wanted to address a recent letter to the editor that was in the september 8th edition of the open register it was offered by vicki campbell it includes a address to a website that contains a large number of documents that retain the oakwood school system as well as other city agencies a series of ohio statutes or information requests and uh just to preface this uh i fully support oakwood open schools becoming it being a welcome environment for people of all demographics uh and seeing people kids of all demographics proceed and i'd also like to see okay become more diverse racially so i think i probably share a lot of words sentiments in those areas but i have to say i and many

other parents are very concerned about the issues that been raised in this letter and also some of the documents that i've seen for anyone listening who has not looked at vicki's article or read these documents i encourage them to do so um i'll just say a couple of things that i'm concerned about when i did look at some of these documents one of them the first one under an edi google drive was a it looks like minutes from a cabinet meeting the oakland school system from november of last year where it directs the oakwood school officials to review and study a lot of documents in the name of equity diversity and inclusion one of them was a presentation by dr gloria alex and billings i looked her up and she's a known advocate and proponent

of critical race theory and the term sheets and i know there's a lot of debate about what that is and what it means i've seen some reports where it includes things like teaching that the country is fundamentally structurally racist um singling out even in some cases employees or students based on their race and encouraging them without very negative views of themselves or others based on race of course that would be racism by definition but then i've heard other people other sources show that's not at all involved so and i think that's where open dialogue between the board and the community would be helpful and transparency i would really like to see the board address the concerns that are raised in vicki's letter and also some of these documents i looked at them a couple of

things that i just quickly noted along with that was one of the sources that the staff were directed to review was blacklivesmatter at school.com which has a list on their website of 13 uh critical core principles which are also listed separately in another website there on the page just a couple things caught my attention under the queer affirming of fundamental principle it speaks to freeing ourselves of the tight grip of heteronormative thinking another one called black villages it says we are committed to disrupting the western prescribed nuclear family structure you know another it calls for uh teaching principles like that to students as young as elementary school age i would like the board at some point to address to what extent they believe any of these principles should be incorporated incorporated into our curriculum thank

you for listening thank you i've been like mr roman did you help contextualize for me who you've reached out to prior to this year me yeah um just other consumers or many other concerned parents i mean district leaders just thought oh i'm sorry um none so far this is my first i'm a novice in the name it was the author of the corporation vicki campbell and it's in the september eighth edition of the register and it has a website in there that uh provides a lot of documents tonight it's my understanding that the information requests will be coming but i think open dialogue like that really helpful to address concerns thank you thank you and uh finally forgive me i think it's mr schaefer great like the other sir uh three minutes and i will

do my best to give you a warning as we near that time so uh what brought me here tonight was uh [Music] because the dialogue cannot [Music] this information um trying to reflect this from multiple goals i just want to kind of see how it's developed this whole thing uh slaps on takes pretty much with the focus uh really highlighting the issues i got work to do uh i want to know more about it um i know that we've been taking notes and we'll certainly follow up with the speakers this evening and uh oh i'm sorry i'm sorry like i've asked the other two can you uh help me understand with whom you've spoken within the district about your concerns okay thank you so we will um endeavor to follow you thank you for coming

we're gonna move on now to board reports i'm pretty sure derek you don't have one yes the john might yes i am oh my god there was so much potential there it is okay uh so this is from um our uh three andrews our administrative director of randy falls development director of osf so a number of things number one oh uh the dayton foundation's reward for leadership i'm a high school teacher and students in my class test positive but typically they're on the other side of the roof but still but for a moment recognizes funds that demonstrate best practices and community organizing fundraising strategic planning and collaboration osf was nominated and awarded the honor for his collaboration with the oakwood schools to grant and place air purifiers at every classroom in the district um grants
