well welcome everyone to the november 15th regular board meeting uh we have several in attendance here so thanks for being on site and i know we have a handful coming through via zoom so we welcome those as well um and then i'd be remiss if i didn't say welcome to the uh the home of the two-time state champion grace hartman all kinds of good stuff happened with fall sports i see a couple in the back there that have successful seasons as well so i'll stop there and and uh jane are you calling me yeah mrs starr here mr pillow here mr miller here mr swederman here i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice
for all thank you mayor please have a motion to adopt this evening second june this is star aye mr wilson hi mr dwell hi mr miller hi and please have a motion to adopt the minutes for the work sessions and regular meeting of monday october 11th 2nd gina mr wilson aye mr schwederman aye mr stark aye mr du wow hi mr miller hi thank you uh dr raymond combinations a couple of pinch hitters and come in and talk a little bit i got jacob miller and quinn mcdonald from the principal superintendent advisory council to share a little bit about what's going on yeah having us all right hello as you said i'm victor moses from mcdonald's at the principal superintendent advisory board at oakland high school i just kind of want to go over what
that is so we are a selected group of students that are recommended by teachers and other staff to help advise and provide input on administration decisions and decision making moves out of the district overall and so we meet about once a month in different varied levels and dr ramy and dr waller come in and they provide insight on what's happening on the over library level of the district and we provided a site on like a student side listing the student perspective and so recently in our first meeting we kind of set our expectations and everything as our first uh beginning of the year but we also uh talked about our guest speaker we brought in uh the vietnam veteran i'm playing that but he was a great speaker we talked about how much we enjoyed
what he said message about perseverance and kind of this fighting for your will to have a great future and fighting for who you are and we also just started brainstorming things we could talk about in later meetings um i also want to talk a little bit about things we got going around high school right now two weekends ago we had our clue fall play i'm not in it but it was a great showing and it was it was a great thing and uh you know the continuous great uh success of our theater program here and then this current this last weekend we had i'm in the jazz family the jazz project which is a great program that our uh dr admiral hank brought to this school um we had uh dr willie morris and the
uni jazz band come down and they did a clinic with them where we worked on our songs lego's advice i'm the drummer for the jazz band and i got to work with uh some great guys there and they taught me a lot it's always a great experience done in all four years just totally last year but it's a great program that just kind of it just re-enlightens our love jazz and you kind of see this the next level that you can get to and it's just such an awesome experience experience so i just want to share that was a great success thank you jacob um i just wanted to kind of touch on what's going on with open high school athletics um i'm a captain on the soccer team this year and um to start
the season we had a new coach so we were optimistic but we didn't really know like kind of what to expect and we ended up having a very successful season 16-0 um one swivel for the second time in a row and then we went to the regional finals of the state tournament which is the farthest we've ever gotten um some more records we broke um luke richly had the most shutouts ever this season was 16. we can see the least amount of goals in the season with eight um goals and we were actually ranked second in state um for division two so that's pretty neat um some other [Applause] another achievements around oakwood high school um our football team were like four and six which is pretty impressive for around here we did throw the
union which is ranked number one at the time so that was pretty neat that was a great time and then you kind of touched on this president duel but um cross country had a great showing at state um with the girls placing seventh with the top one and two finish with grace hartman and belle butler and then the boys placing eight from the grace hartman um state champion so that's a very very good year for fall athletics at oakland high school any questions so you guys do multiple things oh yeah yes and quinn i know you're a singer as well did you want to sing something right now so here we go how good is uh recruitment for this because it's open for any student um it's actually not the principal superintendent advisor board is
uh selected by like um the teachers i believe that might be different this year no it's we we get recommendations but then that we always announce anybody who wants to be part of the kingdom so anybody who emails us or asking part of this thing it's okay so we had a we had a good group we meet with ninth and tenth graders separate from juniors and seniors just keep our numbers smaller but we actually have about 60 kids in the group so it's probably better we're supposed to know yeah thank you so i know you guys just met for the first time but some issues bubbling up that are you guys hope to focus on this year yeah so uh yeah we bought parking because i mean uh even brought up like we've been like
they've been getting tickets without like any boarding and like where else to be parked so in the park situation's a bit rough but we're obviously trying to think of ways to fix that and then we also uh talked about school lunches if you're gonna bring back uh the old model and we were informed that it was just because once we run out of all that other code funding for the extra meals we will switch back and i also uh just asked dr about where the about the money for the the well thank you guys for being here it takes a lot of courage to stand up and talk in front of these [Music] thank you for having me [Applause] a couple of things here and uh you want to be ready for the guy so
i know we mentioned grace a couple of times but she deserves uh you mentioned a few more times with grace that i was with two cross-country champion that's her fifth state championship fifth state championship she's going to nc state next year and she has she's got the the track season coming as well which is uh is going to be great so we're thinking maybe another state championship or two this year oh that's great [Music] it's just amazing you know she jumped in this so late so she's quick she's amazing absolutely and then bella being second at bella's time actually this year her time would have won last year she would have been at the same time so they're running at a whole nother level and continuing to get better and stronger throughout and i know
grace and a couple others have more meets actually to do as an invitational for ohio versus indiana versus pennsylvania that's coming up in the next week or so so a lot of great things i love the camaraderie it's like when you read an article the way they talk about each other and cheer each other on it's very unique it is quite impressive also congratulations to eighth grader andreas miera who recently placed first in the game salad video game creator challenge judge's name game not so heroic the overall best the best overall game in the mid in the middle school division natalie johnson introduced the game challenge to the students and another student took off with his additional stem activity so congratulations to her also congratulations to uh vivian pierce for being the rotary student of
the quarter we were going to present that a couple of weeks ago at rotary but uh philly was six so she's going to do that this friday at rotary which is a nice thing a great partnership with rotary to recognize our students and also congratulations to the hartman teachers kaylee davidson and mallory bright for winning the sixth annual pets in the classroom lesson plan contest the national contest invites pre-kindergarten through 9th grade teachers to submit problem-based learning lessons or lesson plans center of centered around fish reptiles and small animals in the classroom the duo's winning lesson is now on the pets in the classroom website so teachers across the country can't access and use it in the classroom so congratulations to davidson one of the third graders of kaylee's class was so excited about it
so much i've heard about school this year that's great that's all the accommodations gonna move the public comments now and as we do we're gonna take them in the order received i believe we have seven uh the first five are here and on site we'll walk through those in order and then we have two uh that intend to participate via zoom um i'll thank each of the presenters for for keeping their comments to four minutes like we talked about and as a i will attempt to keep track of time and try to give everyone a shout out about a minute with a minute left so you can begin to uh orient yourself to the to the time so that's 40 minutes sorry just dial it back let me uh let me get this handed anything
up and i'll call mr power for the first time all right for the first time well nice to see everybody again hello my name's sean and i'm a girl dad [Laughter] well i i do want to just again thank everybody for the opportunity to speak to you i understand that you are public elected officials but don't take for granted at all the opportunity to share full combo with you is very valuable so i'm very appreciative of that the thing that i'd like to i guess comment on tonight is to provide a little bit of feedback on something that i shared last time on the 11th that was you know as the district rolls things out and shares communications within our community there can be unintended consequences as a result of that that happens everything with
everything in life and specifically i'd like to give feedback on the letter that the district said the night before the election um i will admit that i struggled a little bit with understanding the total genesis of that letter i struggled a little bit with understanding the claims of misinformation against the letter that i had to then assume was the trigger for that but aside from that the thing that i was very discouraged by was the fact that a single member in our community was called out as the potential author of that later letter and within five minutes of that letter being sent out it was then posted on social media and the result of that was a lot of people started to speculate about who that person was that was particularly discouraging in my house
and the reason is because in all seriousness being real bad the sheep pronoun was used in that letter and my mom's a single mom there's a lot of single moms in our community and i've had friends reach out to me feeling a little intimidated by that that if we share comments or if we meet too often or ask too many questions we email personally or we can be called out by the district for some reason and you know the reason that i bring this up the same reason that everybody's here the same reason that all of our candidates ran for election is because we care so much about this place about our kids about our school district that's special i've only been here six years some of you've been here much longer but this is
a really special place and harder and harder to find and the reason i want to give this feedback tonight was because ultimately our kids are watching us in everything we say and do and just because i may disagree with someone politically does it make me your enemy nor does it make you mine and i would love to continue to see our community heal so i would just humbly ask as you go forward that you would consider not making specific call-outs like that in communications because i don't necessarily believe that it had the intent to intimidate or to put blame on a certain issue in our community on one person that was the unfortunate consequence again i greatly appreciate your time i would also like to say uh congratulations to our new elected officials and would
just humbly ask that you continue to consider all members of our community because ultimately we want to see you all succeed because we all do that together thank you very much next up is dr king no thank you for the opportunity to speak this evening um i am just i just want to talk about how fortunate we are to live in this incredible community that is so passionate about our public schools so passionate and thankful that we're listening over three thousand voters and i want to stand before you and remind you that you are accountable to all i stand before you as the voice of the 1500 constituents that want accountability from our superintendent from our treasure and from our board and we want to heal the trust that we feel has been working we
want communication that is meaningful and we feel that that is part of the trust that has been broken and we want financial accountability we are engaged and we are empowered and we feel that covet has brought to light some of the deficiencies within our district particularly the inability to meaningfully communicate and engage our parents as partners in refuel deficiencies in supporting the bottom percentile of our students the absence of resources for our right of struggling students and problems with consistency and discipline this is not political and this is not partisan we are here we are watching and we are motivated to continue this conversation thank you [Applause] uh mr irwin thanks sir um so uh ladies and gentlemen i i stand before you um feeling like an idiot see i i prepared some truly eloquent
remarks about bringing our volunteers back into our schools um and then uh during the working session dr rimi uh predicted me by addressing my exact concerns so yeah yeah that uh that great i'm very grateful to um for poison those concerns that i brought to you last week uh even though it does make me you know look and feel like an idiot now uh but since this idiot has three more minutes left i've got a few things that i'd just like to expand from what he said during the working session um bringing volunteers back is complicated um and i get that um each school is different but then so is each teacher in each classroom and each volunteer i respect uh dr remy's reluctance and the board's reluctance to issue blanket guidance uh on how
and when to bring volunteers back and in fact i very much agree that we should not be adopting any kind of one-size-fits-all solution here but i also know that this process has to start with uh with guidance from our district leadership because it was guidance from our district leadership that effectively stopped the volunteer program here in oakland so i'm asking our district leaders to create and publicly issue some guidance on this dr ramy uh in an email changed me last week gave me some some excellent very useful advice for how i might volunteer uh at the elementary school my kids go to harman which i intend to use thank you but i did not feel comfortable beginning that process without first trying to publicly uh bring this issue up because frankly uh if sarah patterson
sees this idiot as the only one who's coming in and crying there's going to be some problems so that's really all i've got uh thank you very much balancing my time [Applause] uh is it dr johnson uh yeah and um yeah i don't know how to cut it down so bear with me i know all of the members of the police force so they're not going to drag me out of here okay um my name is dr vivian johnson and i've been in oakwood since 2006 and i don't know how many years that is i think it's 15 maybe 16. and um i know quite a few of you and friendly faces i remember you cassie from hiring dr lee and dr i remember you i remember utah as well and i'm here i don't
have skin in the game in the sense that my daughter does not go to oakland schools i live in ogre but my daughter goes to a private christian school and so i'm here because i feel like we are a family like i came here and i saw you dr rainey and i haven't seen you in forever and honestly but my heart felt warm and we spent time trying to decide who we should have as the next superintendent and we enthusiastically chose you and so maybe this is more egotistical on my part but i want you to succeed because we chose you and so the healing that sean power and other people mentioned before is something that i really wanted to happen because we i remember we hired you because you were going to bring about
a vision that we wanted and it's hard for me like i said i don't have a kid in school it's hard for me to hear the negative banter so whatever it is and you know you know the details and some of them were brought up i i just really would like for that that conversation to end somehow and they're there to be gender and healing because the the people that are hurt the most are are all kids so um that's all i came to say is that uh i am a conservative and so but i don't think that really matters here i think that what matters is us providing the best education for for our kids and so dr rainey i know that you're very capable of healing this community with the great staff that
you have around you and i'm just like urging like i said my daughter is not in the school system just to heal you have the power to heal the negative tension that is in our community and i believe in i believe that you can do that [Applause] dr johnson you have 37 minutes left throughout the rest of the year all right thank you i guess i'll have some comments along a similar line uh and i do also know many of you and care about our community so i appreciate the chance to speak uh i'm not as eloquent and i'm kind of engineering precision so but uh so this here's what i got the last few weeks were a very intense we're very intense with the hotly contested election coming to a close the week before
the election i received an informative two-page political flyer in the mail referencing a variety of grievances associated with the school administration that have been greatly debated in social media and in the oakwood register the document summarized examples of critical race theory lgbt indoctrination and concerns over the implementation of the social emotional learning program in the schools on monday night before the election at 5 pm i was surprised to see but i perceived to be a highly partisan email released by the school administration starting targeting the flyer i had received attacking a parent within our community and apparently taking to task talking points offered by some of the candidates for school board so i did a little research the letter from the administration claimed there were libelous and slanderous statements being made about the schools which
was a shock to me the letter pointed out that our schools have dropped in some outside rankings which is true the letter claimed that liquid staff attended anti-racism training through the montgomery services educational center which is true these classes included references such as the seven stages of white people going woke and the 20 things to be an equitable educator it highlighted an lgbt calendar that was distributed to kindergarteners these are fifth five year olds and six-year-olds and the schools asked for pronouns of the students and did not intend to share these answers with parents their additional summaries of cell which again were all true and i brought some references so everyone can see three contestants around so given that the substantive content is all true it is all the more shocking that the schools intervened
in an election the release of the letter from the schools violated the public trust through the use of public resources by a public employee specifically to influence the election of a board with oversight of the schools using a position of authority to stifle dissenting voices is also the epitome of cancer culture and sean mentioned and others have spoken to me they're afraid to reach out to the board they're afraid to engage with the leadership of the school and the administration people send things to us many of us here and they're afraid to say which class they got it from or because they don't want their children to be threatened uh or to be cancelled so i think there's a real crisis in leadership and i don't think that that email helps i think we can
do better and i encourage you to do so uh cassie and mike you're on your way out lauren and laura you have the opportunity to be part of that healing so um that's all i have to share i think our next speaker is misters no i'm saying this correctly seligman and he's coming in via zoom so ratify if i butchered your last name i apologize in advance that's all right can you hear me we can yes okay great um hi so um i will try to uh to be brief um i took some some notes here and have a lot of thoughts um i i agree there are members of the community who are motivated really on on all sides of this um i am one of the many voters who was very happy with
the election results i think there was a clear majority voice from the voters in this election i don't think it was a close call um as for the letter from uh dr ramy i was actually happy to see the school district openly address the misinformation and fear-mongering that was rampant in this election cycle i i think there was false information that was dominating the narrative and and there wasn't really a voice loud enough to counter um this sort of movement that was going on um there's no such thing i would say as lgbt indoctrination that's that's not a thing um i want to talk about i think the conflict that we're seeing right now frankly is is been normal throughout american history every time we try to make our schools more welcoming and inclusive of
our diverse society better reflective of the public this is what happens in 1844 in philadelphia philadelphia was becoming more inclusive and the catholic bishop asked the the school board that catholic children be allowed to read from a catholic translation of the bible rather than the protestant one that was required in the schools the school board responded that children could use whatever bible translation they preferred and that no child would be compelled to participate in religious education in the school as it was after all a public school the protestant community's anger over their loss of privilege and dominance in the public school system led to community violence two catholic churches were burned to the ground and when the mayor of philadelphia called for calm onlookers through stones at him yesterday or not yesterday yesterday was the
anniversary of desegregation in new orleans public schools uh november 14 1960. i think many of us know either the photo or the painting immortalized by norman rockwell that famous scene of six-year-old ruby bridges being escorted by us marshals into her elementary school that little girl ruby bridges is younger than my father that's how close in history this is to us of course things today i'm not saying that it is 1844 1960. uh our issues are not those issues but uh as i see it the core is still the same in that public schools must reflect the diversity present in the public body throughout history there have been those who wish to exclude to isolate ostracize who want the school to only serve their privileged group i mean the fact that someone could say in a
public forum that there's lgbt indoctrination in our schools is is shocking and upsetting to me because that is not a thing um sometimes yeah i'm sorry oh yeah sure sometimes sometimes those folks win in philadelphia there was a rise in catholic schools in the creation of them after the anti-catholic riots and desegregation of schools led to white flight for white families isolated communities uh where redlining could prevent black residents um but in the long term those who are pushing for inclusion of our diverse community always win out um i see nothing wrong with the diversity of meeting inclusion initiatives coming out of the schools i'm frankly very proud of the efforts that the school district has made over the past year or two or three um if anything i'd be upset if those initiatives didn't
exist i'm sorry that i'm not there in person i had work uh tonight but i do plan on coming to as many board meetings as i possibly can i want to thank the board members for their service to our community um and everyone who ran in this election cycle thank you for stepping up to serve the to the the public and uh thank you for my time thank you and we have one more i believe um coming in we assume michelle wilson can you hear me sure great so my name is michelle wilson and in full disclosure i am mr wilson's wife but as someone who has long worked in um conflict management and conflict resolution in my career i wanted to address what mr dalrymple called the flyer that was sent out and the
response by dr rainey also thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak so i will say i was not a recipient of the flyer nor do i know who the author was i did see the letter as mr dalrymple said it was posted on social media so i did see it in its entirety i believe i know that it has been widely discussed as was dr ramy's response um i read the anonymous letter and it was signed anonymous and the wokewood blog that is referenced in the flyer and in my opinion both writings displayed paranoia conspiracy theories not based in fact and even more disturbing to me no good will for the administration of oakwood city schools the school board the staff and the teachers many of whom are members of our community i
read dr ramey's letter and response as a strong response in support of staff and teachers which is frankly what i expect from a role model and a leader thank you for your time thank you to everyone who ran for the school board this year thank you for caring about our community and our children we have lived in oakwood for more than 10 years our children have gone through school here they have had an outstanding experience my children are not angels they have not been you know without their own flaws and faults but we have not had any any problems that i could speak of um i appreciate dr ramy's leadership and mr dewell's leadership on the board and um thank you to the staff and teachers have a good evening thank you so with that
that concludes our public comments and like we offer but don't encourage you guys are welcome to leave now if that's your pleasure um we'll pause for a second no i'm sticking around yeah all right this is great you should do this every week this is just the final the final vote stuff that's coming up rest of the board agenda yeah there's several pieces of action we're going to think the next thing on the agenda is the curriculum showcase and then board reports and more fun stuff like question finance so let's dr lam turn to the curriculum showcase yes thanks for every year thank you um tonight the christmas showcase has been recorded again home economics into the family consumer science and she has proposed you'll see those tonight eight courses that have been adjusted to
showcase current standards so she's going to tell us about some of these courses hi my name is kendra rarick and i am the new family and consumer science teacher at the junior senior high school this is my 10th year teaching um so i have taught a whole gamut of classes under the family and consumer science umbrella and i am so excited to be here um in the oakwood community teaching our students um i am coming here today to propose eight new classes to add to the family and consumer science department um three of which will be at the junior high level and five at the high school um i think that updating the family and consumer science department is extremely important especially with how quickly things are changing in our world i would like the
department to stay up to date with what our students need and what they need to be successful all of these classes you know provide hands-on experience life skills uh practical you know knowledge that they can take with them for years to come so i am proposing that we add three classes to the junior high school they are open to both seventh and eighth grade students um so it'll be a combination and they are nine week long courses and they require no prerequisites so any seventh or eighth grade um sorry any 7th or 8th grade student can take any of these three classes you know throughout their time at the junior high level so the first class that i am proposing that we add is called career exploration and essentially in this class students will um
you know just kind of learn about themselves and their skills and their you know aptitude um and just how you know that will help them you know decide what they want to do in the future um we will plan for their future by learning um different team building skills as well as leadership skills how to effectively communicate how to handle technology in the workplace and that it includes technology safety additionally students will learn how to interview um they will be able to get the opportunity to write a resume as well as how to accurately and correctly fill out a job application all of which all of our students will need at some point in their life the second class that i am proposing is called intro to fcs and essentially um this class is going
to cover the not the four but four major um topics in family and consumer science and those include child development family relations food and nutrition as well as living environment so students will learn about family units as well as basic infant care so during class they will have the opportunity to work with the baby think it over babies students will also learn how to live sustainably as well as efficiently in their households and then lastly students will explore healthy living um and how to prepare healthy snacks and we'll be doing that with hands-on experience in the kitchen um and lastly the third class that i am proposing that we add to the junior senior high school is called principles of food in this class students will learn about basic kitchen as well as sanitation skills
food safety and essentially i just hope that these will help build confidence while preparing food this class will cover how to um how to um choose healthy live or i'm sorry how to choose healthy food options how to read a food label and again they're going to get that hands-on experience in the kitchen while we prepare different types of food and now i am proposing that we add five new classes to the high school program of study and these are all going to be semester-long classes open to students grades 9 through 12 except for one course and it is called career and college readiness and this class will be a junior senior only class so the first class that i am proposing is a global foods class and in this class students are going to
learn about different cultures how they prepare food dishes they're going to actually participate in food labs and learn different techniques based on the region that we are discussing at that time we're going to learn about different cuisines traditions um as well as different ingredients that are used um throughout different areas in the world the second class that i am proposing um to add is called parenting and child development and again this class is open to grades 9 through 12 as well no prerequisite but this is a class where students are going to look at topics regarding prenatal and postnatal care childbirth parenting they're also going to look into child development theories as well as different learning styles students will also receive hands-on experience with the baby think it over dolls and you know this class
would be great for students who eventually want to become parents in the future as well as anybody who babysits maybe they have younger siblings at home or you know younger cousins in the family and then those also interested in dealing with children um in the future um as their career the third class that i am proposing to add um to the family and consumer science department is called nutrition and wellness again this is a class for grades nine through 12 and this class will focus solely on how to live a healthy lifestyle uh we will look at portion control dietary needs um how physical activity really impacts the overall overall wellness of an individual students will learn how to prepare healthy meals as well as how to choose healthy food options on their own when
they're out and about the second or i'm sorry the fourth class that i am proposing that we add is called interior design um and this class is um focusing on design principles in residential areas um we we all are going to be are these students are all going to be on their own eventually and we will discuss how to use all spaces in a house they'll get hands-on experience looking at blueprints and they'll actually design a space um in the house on their own and then this last class that i am proposing that we add to the department is the junior senior only class and as i mentioned before it's called career and college readiness and essentially this class um is just bridging the gap between high school and after high school it focuses on
researching careers planning for their future applying for colleges filling out college applications filling out scholarships in addition these students will also pro they will also participate in a job shadow experience they will learn um interviewing skills how to be an effective and professional individual in the workplace so all things that would greatly benefit our students as they transition from oakwood to life after oakwood thank you guys so much for listening um please let me know if you have any questions again i am very passionate about my my air my subject area i think all eight of these classes would have a huge impact um on our students here at the junior senior high school um and i am looking forward to you know answering any questions that you may have and um hopefully implementing these
courses next year thank you so much thank you just to clarify those are additional those are updated questions you know we have several in the program of studies but we don't offer each one every year so you know it's it's that's hard to shuffle just tell you how many of them um but what we've done is she and i sat down for several days and we went through and looked at the options that family consumer science says you know that that they had on them now the standards and and the suggested courses and um well she explained what they were concerned and so yes many of them are going to go away however they're going to be similar to some that are being offered now you know some of the cooking courses you know they're
they're going to replace those but the idea is to say so later yeah um we had the great opportunity to go to our state at the conference a few weeks ago and uh you know it's always nice to update what's happening in the state with the victim operating standards um and new ideas on how to make sure our staff if they're if they're servicing the students um that they have their their hours and we have a lot of professional development for them so um let me go to the first step yes i'm trying to get there okay you made yourself okay that's fine so um the first thing that's happening in gifted education is professional development for our staff because uh the model that we have to use we only have three gis in the
district and we have a whole lot of students um that are gifted over 50 usually um and i don't know the new numbers until our new testing comes in but um and so with that many students they cannot teach all of them so the model that the state has asked us to use is that we need to have professional development for our teachers on the first four years our teachers must get 60 hours of professional development in the gifted competencies and we do we've been doing this for quite some time i think this we started back in 2015 starting to record and offer professional development so that that so that teachers understand our gifted population and they have the tools they need um to stretch them and keep them running at the level that they
need so um some of the sessions i want to show you like on our last pd day on november the 1st uh we had three different sessions um and they're listed there um also upcoming next year some more sessions that they're planning right now um scl and the gifted student gifted english learners uh you know we do have an english learner population and we have to make sure that those students are gifted that we're serving them even though they don't have a commanding you know of the english language so we also are going to be talking about the accelerated statement which isn't always against the student um and so and then some we have some things going on with the advanced mathematics um so those courses can count towards that 60 hours so every teacher
has to have 60 hours every teacher in oakwood which they all do right um yes they all have to be highly qualified and that means in 60 hours the first four years after these operating standards went in or if you're a brand new teacher um you've got four years to get your 60 hours you're looking at 15 hours a year and then they have to have ongoing houses they can't just stop after 60. so the state's requiring you you must continue with that fresh about not at that level not 60 hours but yeah and so it makes all of our teachers highly qualified in understanding how to teach and serve gifted students um we also have professional learning communities some plcs this is done on teachers on their own time they'll see them um meeting
after school sometimes during the lunch time but these are some of the courses that also that have been offered and we're offering just some titles just giving you an idea of some of the things that we've offered internally okay the next slide um another thing that our teachers have done is they've created a given google classroom and this is where our teachers can access pd opportunities let's say they cannot they don't have the time to do a plc or uh maybe on e day they didn't get as many of the courses that they wanted to on you know those opportunities but the state and our county they have a lot of um seminars that they can attend either virtually or in person and so we keep them all in this gift in this google classroom
so teachers like i needed something on differentiation and i i forget who was offering that well that was all for downtown county so we keep them all there and then the nagc web webinars which is your national association of gifted children um they have anytime webinars and they're virtual and teachers can do that kind of training in the evening and there's an accountability piece of how long they're online and they have to take this quiz and that kind of thing so that's another way they get their gifted hours um after work and then also we also have anytime gifted podcasts that are available just stays put together so those are just a lot of different opportunities where teachers can go out there and get those hours and if they're struggling with how do i differentiate
my gifted students in my classroom these are all ways that you can learn how to do that also our staff uh they all teachers in our district have opportunities for plans for gis um they a lot of times you'll see this in department meeting times grade level meetings um on days before school after school virtual meetings you know and so and then during their plan times you know if they need to be 101 um and i just i mentioned about our state conference that we went to the fall conference and we just we continue to to pick up really great ideas things that are working for students um this is again this talks about how our staff members have to meet uh requirements to be high you know be high quality gifted service providers and
they learn how to differentiate um i guess it's just more of what i've already talked about so some of the other ways that we can serve gifted students is by continuing to update and add to our ap honors and ccd courses and we continue to do that um so we have honors staff english uh that's all offered beginning in seventh grade ccp courses actually i imagine you guys i don't know i mean ccp has been around enough now for us to remember but seventh grade students can take college of course music welcome um and so that starts in seventh grade um and then we have ap courses that begin in ninth grade that we acted we added a world history for freshmen a couple years ago um so they can start to continue to take
those high-level courses college-level courses um beginning of ninth grade and um so uh we we have two new ccp courses that we're looking at adding for next year those are in the works so i'm not going to talk about it yet but um we're hoping gosh i wonder if we could have financial literacy anyway there's points there's more coming we always try to keep those updated and keep those ap courses fresh our teachers uh our ap teachers they have to get again outside of this gifted um training they have to also be highly qualified to teach ap courses and not every teacher can do it they have to go through rigorous training usually it happens in the summer and it's many many many hours of training they give up their summer pretty much to be
qualified to do this if our teacher is teaching a ccp course they have to have been gone through the process of being approved by the university to be an adjunct professor and if they don't if they don't have a master's degree a really high level uh degree in the course of their teaching they can't teach it you can't teach it so just it's just really exciting i think what we can offer our offer our students some of the instructional strategies that our teachers learn how to use you can kind of read down through this i think our staff really does value the gifted program and and learning about how to reach those kids because we have so many of them we also have some specific courses kids can sign up for the junior high you
can see what we offer there um robotics robotics two historical displays and critical thinking class and then at the high school um they have a is they only get a court of credit but they participate in this year-long project and they and then during that they reflect on their own unique giftedness because we have students are gifted in lots of different areas it just may not be academics it could be creative thinking it could be art art music you know so um you know we want them to understand what their gift really is because if they understand it and can embrace it we want them to continue to use that gift as they become an adult and so we also have them repassion projects um so it's i think pretty exciting what we can do
at the high school in addition to the ccp courses the honors courses this is an example of things we try to try to do new things every year so um the junior high social space classes the students there have that are gifted um they have access to enrichment units that they can explore um in a different way are in depth and one of them is this year's islamic art and geometry um and that's through social studies so they can go in your social studies love that tie into to a map and geometrical shapes through the islamic art um so it's just it's just really that our teachers continue to be very creative on how they can reach that gift and doing different projects here's some more upcoming events and opportunities our students have so um
the beast academy math enrichment program so mallory bright at and she is doing she's hosting a training session with our teachers 10 of our teachers to explore this math enrichment program this will give our teachers more tools in their toolbox to help those high math students continue to grow so it kind of gives you an idea of that you know we're really trying to get up there on women's taxonomy and get those higher order thinking skills going and logical because we don't want those kids stuck in bath drill kill rope members they don't need that they really need to be challenged um with those you know focusing on the logical reasons um this is something else that was planned as a junior high high school you know we look at opportunities at 10 11 and
we try to implement them so we're going to have this an interactive live lecture by a math professor from the ohio state university go bucs i am a graduate from their math department right and so um you can read on what their kids are going to be doing but we're excited about that that's coming up you're seeing too so we'll have to have it right before thanksgiving uh some other things that are kind of fun that's happening um if a student is qualifies as gifted in creative thinking um we also have disney imaginary and khan academy creative series that mrs pop has put together at the junior high school for those students so anyway that's just an update on what we're doing just to give you an idea of what's happening [Music] and i know
that some seventh graders can take out i guess the concern is more of the social thing shirt of my 7th year is going to be in math class with freshmen so i have suggested to those parents just to contact tim there but can you tell me kind of how many students are maybe accessing that second grade and how we're kind of wrapping around making sure that we're providing like that social emotional yeah and that support so right now we were noticing that our sixth graders our fifth and sixth graders were really off you know those are our highly gifted kids we're really operating in math because it's so sequential at a really high level and it was inappropriate to teach them fifth grade content when they already knew it and they knew it back in
third grade you know they were just that smart and so we started of course um trying to challenge them and so we put them in there's a real strict criteria for them to be in the class um and we've learned this over the years we um fill out an attitude paper and we have some things like did you do join me you know kind of um do you enjoy learning more about math and your peers do you think you know do you love math do you want to keep learning math too you know what do you think about it you know and because what we found is that a lot of times the student is only trying to excel in math because um their environment says you better do this you know or if there's
any pressure somewhere to do it and they really don't like math and they have and they don't want to do it um those kids never they don't make and so finding out their attitude about math is really important and there's lots of reasons attitude papers out there where you can kind of get an idea and so we have the kids do that but they also have to test and they must take an algebra readiness test and if they don't pass the iowa algebra readiness test they no way can we do that we don't want if they're not ready we're not in that situation and so actually taking algebra one as a seventh grader isn't very confident typically if they are in eighth grade when they do that and so um which there's a lot of
schools that offer algebra one and eighth grade all over the place you know so um but we do have some that can do that seventh grade number one and when they do they're double accelerated and so that but they have to show us that they've learned all the elementary concept of 7th grade 8th grade you know before they're eligible to get that one and so right now we have so many students that are able to do that that they have their own little cohorts so they're not mixed in with the high school kids they're their own they're with their peers and that's what we have right now because we have so many kids in that situation we have a classroom full of like 20 okay it's not like 60. um and that fluctuates every year
because we have to go on on their achievement on what they know if they're successful they can be successful at that level and so right now that's what it's looked like thank you thank you dr lane you're welcome oh um maybe just a plot so uh the next installment of our of our see this shade series will drop next monday by next monday and it was an opportunity for me to sit down with amy samaski and bridget fiori our leaders of our state standard-based social emotional learning programming that has uh that's that's rolling out it has rolled out so we spent i don't know i don't know how much time's gonna hit the video but we spent some time and it's just fun to share and kind of hear about what we're up to so
take a look at that it should be posted within the next week okay let me let me see if i can save you a little bit on the alumni uh because uh i had to resign she did something for plus she had a baby okay everybody is healthy um i'm in the final stages of checking references and uh aligning our next alumni director hopefully by the end of this week i was hoping it would be fine today and work out for us we'll do that so it'll be later this week hopefully wrap that up thank you stopping some games now um [Music] mr wilson hi mr miller aye mr dual hi mr speaker second is [Music] mr miller aye aye mr jordan aye mr smider aye mr russel recommendation is made to approve depository agreement
