On behalf of the faculty, staff, family, and friends gathered here this evening, we are overjoyed to be celebrating the Titan class of 2026. To begin our commencement exercises tonight, it is my honor to introduce senior class co-president Khloe Herald. >> [applause] >> Good evening. It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the Hidden Valley High School class of 2026 commencement ceremony. Today marks the day that all of us have been eagerly awaiting for many years. So, let me be the first to say congratulations to the Titan class of 2026. [screaming] [applause and cheering] As we begin today's celebration, I would first like
003to take a moment to welcome our family members, friends, and faculty to this special occasion. I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to all the Rono County Schools central office staff in attendance today, as well as our superintendent, Dr. Ken Nicely, and our school board representative, Dr. Ryan White, who are joining us on stage today. Welcome to each of you and thank you for being here to celebrate the achievements of Hidden Valley's class of 2026. [applause] On behalf of the class of 2026, I would also like to take this moment to recognize and thank the collection of individuals that have been instrumental in each of our lives and have helped us reach this day. our teachers, counselors, coaches, parents, and family members to name a few. We have all been fortunate to
004have these individuals placed in our lives to help us achieve this momentous goal. Please join me in giving them a round of applause. [applause] >> [applause] >> At this time, we would like to honor our class of 2026 graduates who are committed to serving our country in the United States Armed Forces. We commend your bravery and commitment to our nation. With those graduates who plan to serve in the military and their families, please rise at this time and remain standing to be recognized. [applause] >> [applause] >> Today, in honor of these brave graduates, the presentation of colors will be conducted by the Rono County Corps of Cadetses. At this time, we ask that everyone please stand, if you are able, and join our band in the playing of the national anthem. >> [singing] >> up
005and down. >> [music] [music] >> Oh, [music] I see. >> [music] [music] [applause] [clears throat] >> be seated. Hidden Valley High School class of 2026, it is nearly time for you to make your way to this platform to be honored as high school graduates. From the moment you stepped into your kindergarten classroom to the last time you exited Hidden Valley at the senior bell, today's culminating event, your graduation ceremony, offers an opportunity to reflect upon what you have accomplished. You, the 23rd graduating class of Hidden Valley High School, represent more than a decade of persistence and determination, growth and discovery, challenge and triumph. Today is not just a chance to reflect, but also a time to celebrate all you have achieved, as well as a future not yet crafted. Class of 2026, look around and
006take in the crowd gathered today. You are surrounded by your families, friends, teachers, counselors, coaches, support staff, and numerous others who sincerely desire to honor you. As they celebrate you, take the time to recognize the impact each of these individuals has had on your journey. None of us reach moments such as this entirely alone. Rather, you have been bolstered by their encouragement, sacrifice, counsel, and steadfast belief in your abilities and promise all along the way. Take time today to thank those present and represented for the part they played in your high school graduation. You assuredly deserve today's recognition and they undoubtedly deserve your gratitude. Titan class of 2026, before this ceremony closes, you will no longer be thought of as high school students, but rather Titan alumni. You will take your place beside 22 preceding
007classes, having meaningfully contributed your own unique brand of excellence to our great school community. You have met a standard established long ago as well as expanded its reach and potential impact through the addition of your own class. And as we reflect on your achievements while students at Hidden Valley, there is much to acknowledge. To start, your accomplishments in athletics continue a proud tradition of Titan athletic excellence. From team accolades like region championships in boys basketball and women's swimming this year to individual accomplishments like Steel Torranc's more than 1,000 career points as well [applause] as well as all state, all region and all district recognition for numerous titans including but far from limited to Wyatt Clark, Dy Dorini, Truit Bartlett, Camelin Morad and Bella Faci as well as postseason performances across sports and seasons throughout the
008last four years. The class of 2026 has left a lasting impression. There are seniors seated here today who know what it takes to reach a state title tennis match, to defend a state volleyball championship, to endure an unexpected season ending injury, to show up when expectations are high and when times are tough. Those experiences have shaped and informed how you will handle the various challenges that are inevitable in life. consider them well-learned and oftentimes well-earned. Several standout Titan athletes have committed to continuing their athletic endeavors at the collegiate level and will no doubt have an immediate impact on their new schools and teams. Katon Bartley, Abigail Bishop, Alexis McFarland, Gary Norris Jr. Trevan Penn, Chase Pritchard, Steel Torrance, and Wyn Womaldorf. Titans, you have left your imprint on athletics at Hidden Valley, and we excitedly
009look forward to the continuation of your athletic journeys as you transition to college. The class of 2026 has likewise excelled in the classroom beyond traditional expectations. 63 of 203 seniors will graduate today as validictorians, earning a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher. Collectively, the class of 2026 has also accepted just shy of $2.9 million in scholarship support, a testament to your hard work, your intellect, and the potential others see in your future. One senior, Dakota Hoppy, has been awarded a full scholarship to Holland University. >> [applause] >> Five Titan seniors, Jackson Lubec, Taylor Malone, Riley Mara, John Stamps, and Bear Tyrie have earned uniform certificates of general studies from Virginia Western Community College with four of these individuals also earning an associate degree while completing their high school studies. [cheering] [applause] Earlier this semester, Caleb
010Wang and Sophia Zen were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists, while Anuva Giri was recently recognized as the Burton Center for Arts and Technology Senior of the Year from Hidden Valley. [applause] Class of 2026, you know, I've only scratched the surface of your scholarly accomplishments, but we must press on. Four years ago, Hidden Valley faculty and staff committed to expanding learning beyond content mastery such that skill sets in the areas of communication, collaboration, and critical thinking were also intentionally shaped. At that time, 25 or so seniors accepted the challenge of showcasing their skills. And today I am pleased to recognize the 115 seniors from the class of 2026 who successfully demonstrated and defended their opportunity ready skills acquired in and [clears throat] out of the classroom. [applause] We panelists experienced firsthand the confidence and passion these
011Titans exuded as they shared their acquisition and use of these skills through classroom learning, civic engagement, work experiences, and leadership activities. To our opportunity ready graduates, I can think of no other students who have more thoughtfully reflect upon their learning, growth, and actionable steps to be taken for further refinement. Rono County Public Schools has made a bold promise through this work to our school communities, and you have demonstrated that promise fulfilled. And at this time, I ask each of our opportunity ready graduates to stand and be recognized. [cheering and applause] Thank you. [applause] Beyond athletics and academics, the class of 2026 has also excelled in fine arts. Consider for example Julia Pierce, Jackson Lubeck, Lily Stanley, and Jay Vidal who each earned membership and performance opportunities in All Virginia band or all Virginia choir with
012Julia Pierce participating in three separate All Virginia ensembles this year alone. Thanks in part to their abilities and efforts as well as those offered by other seniors like Max Cornet and Ally Armen Trout, our band and coral groups earned superior ratings in all graded performances this year. >> [applause] >> The Virginia Music Educators Association in response has bestowed upon Hidden Valley for the second year in a row the difficult to achieve blue ribbon school award. Congratulations, [applause] Titan class of 2026. You have also made lasting contributions to our school's culture and climate through mentorship, leadership, and service. During the first semester, 44 seniors crafted a mentoring experience for 9th graders designed to help them successfully transition to high school life. Senior leaders like B. Barber, Kate Thunderberg, Jonathan Hamilton, and Griffin Shaver discussed athletics, extracurricular
013involvement, academic balance, our Titan traits, and how to navigate difficult situations. Further, excuse me, further our Titan 12 leadership team comprised of Alli Burrow, Kate Chadwick, Riley Coleman, Kendra Fetison, Anuva Giri, Sadie Lily, Jackson Lubeck, Camel Morstad, John Stamps, Michael Thorrell, Caleb Wang, and Frank Zaradulus continued the class of 2026's mentoring efforts by meeting with 9th graders a second time later in the year. During this session, they specifically promoted kindness and guided ninth graders through several targeted activities as well as shared a video message on kindness created at their request by K92 DJ Antoine Terrell. Further, student advisory council senior leaders Bear Tyrie and Lily Broaditch also offered a voice for students while working with division leadership, our school board, and building level administrators throughout their eighth grade and high school years. We have absolutely
014benefited from their unique lens and are grateful for the insight they and their younger counterparts provide. It is evident the class of 2026 is comprised of exceptional forwardthinking leaders and like senior Titans TJ Furrow, Audrey H, Zack Hodes, Emry Johnson, Tanai Naungla, Devin Ring, and Raniah Saunders who will soon enter the military. The class of 2026 understands the promise of the future depends on leadership, but also upon meaningful actionoriented service to others. Hidden Valley High School class of 2026. These accomplishments and so much more reflect how deserving you are of walking this platform and being named graduates. The diploma you receive today is more than a piece of paper to be forgotten. over time. Rather, it represents a significant chapter in your life where you were forged in effort, tempered by discipline, and honed with
015purpose. You, the class of 2026, exemplify the Titan way. And on behalf of all who are present, I enthusiastically congratulate each of you on reaching this momentous occasion. [applause] At this time, I ask senior class co-president Maggie Grant to come to the podium to recognize our retiring faculty members. [applause] >> Good evening. I am honored to be able to recognize three special faculty members this evening who after many years of service to public education will be retiring at the conclusion of this school year. On behalf of the class of 2026, I would like to thank Mr. Joe Kavanaaugh, Mrs. Maria Sherman, and Mr. Scott Beard. Mr. Kavanaaugh, would you please stand and remain standing at this time to be recognized? [applause] Mr. Joe Kavanaaugh will retire this year after 19 years as a high school
016social studies teacher. In that time, he has not only taught a variety of social studies courses, but has also been a leading figure in many theater productions at Hidden Valley, as well as coached both the forensic and debate teams. His commitment to the students of Hidden Valley for nearly two decades will be sorely missed. Would everyone please give a round of applause to Mr. Joe Kavanagh? [applause] [applause] Our next retiree is Mrs. Maria Sherman. Mrs. Sherman, would you please stand and remain standing at this time? [applause] Mrs. Sherman has devoted 31 years to public education as a science teacher, club sponsor, and national honor society adviser. Before arriving at Hidden Valley in 2006, she previously taught at Northside High School and William Fleming High School. Mrs. Sherman has not only been an integral part of
017the Hidden Valley science department, but has also been a beloved member member of the Titan community, receiving many teacher superlative awards over the years. The award she has taken the most pride in is receiving the most likely to survive a zombie apocalypse, not once but twice. [applause] Thank you, Mrs. Sherman, for the impact you have left on not just the class of 2026, but the many Titan classes before us. Would everyone please give a round of applause to Mrs. Maria Sherman? [applause] >> [applause] >> The final teacher I am honored to recognize this evening is Mr. Scott Beard. Would would Mr. Beard please stand at this time? [applause] Mr. Revered has devoted an impressive 41 years of service to public education as not only a math teacher, but also a club sponsor, track coach, and
018football coach. Nearly 24 years ago, he was a founding teacher at Hidden Valley High School, helping to open the new school in 2002. Prior to this, he taught math for 17 years at Caves Junior High School. In true math teacher fashion, when reflecting on his 41-year career, he noted that he has participated in over 400 fire drills, said the pledge of allegiance over 7,000 times and logged 270,000 travel miles driving to and from school each day. Mr. Beard, your impact on Hidden Valley is mathematically impossible to calculate and you will be greatly missed. Would everyone please give a round of applause to Mr. Scott Beard? [applause] >> [applause] >> I would now like to welcome our first keynote speaker, Miss Janelle Johnson, to the podium to give the class of 2026 address. [applause] Okay. [snorts]
019>> Good evening everyone and welcome to the Hidden Valley High School graduation ceremony. My name is Janelle Johnson and it's truly an honor to stand here before you today as your keynote speaker. Today I want to take the time to congratulate our class of 26 and most of all those that made this moment possible. To our loving families, school faculty members, coaches, counselors, and to our exceptional graduates. Please give them a big round of applause. [applause] Talawa, a powerful word in Jamaica which means strong or resilient. A word my aunt always uses to describe Tom Cruz fearlessness when he faces conflicts in Mission Impossible. a word that we have all experienced at least once in our lives. Today we are celebrating our success, but also honoring the trials and the moments that really defined our
020time together. The laughter in the hallways, the inside jokes that made no sense to anyone else. and especially those pep rallies where for a little while nothing else mattered but us being together and cheering as one. Those pep rallies were not just about school spirit. They were about us. They reminded us that we were a part of something way bigger than ourselves and that we were always surrounded by each other. Whether we were screaming at the top of our lungs or laughing at someone's weave being snatched in a game, those moments captured something special. Joy, unity, and the kind of memories that sticks with you long after the noise fades. But as much as we sure joy, we have also faced challenges. There were times when we could not get all those assignments in at
02111:59. Come on. Times when things did not go as planned and when we felt defeated and yet through the midst of the storm, we have stood strong and we have overcome. As you reflect back on high school, realize that life is the greatest gift you have been given and it's so unpredictable. And yet, every moment and action you do builds you for your tomorrow. No matter the people you meet, the weak performance you had a day ago, or the quiet battles no one else could see, you have grown and proven that you're able to rise above pressure and keep moving forward even when things feel uncertain. So as you continue your journey, I want you all to always remember that your greatest achievement is your resilience. It is your ability to overcome obstacles, to take
022any given opportunity and not to wait for the perfect moment, but to push yourself to greater heights. A quote that I believe resonates with this class is from Ricky Rogers who wrote, "Srent doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't." True strength is not measured by how easy the journey is, but by the courage to keep moving forward when life becomes difficult. Of all the obstacles we have overcame, it has shown how greatly resilience lies within each and every one of us. Let us remember that no challenge is greater than the strength, resilience, and talawa spirit we carry every day. To the class of 2026, congratulations. This is not the end of your story, but your next chapter of something new and something great. So
023get your caps ready and keep your heads in the game. Talawas, it's time to graduate. [applause] Jackson. My life goes [singing] on in song above. 027>> Euf Zang Good evening, Hidden Valley High School faculty, family, friends, and most importantly, the graduating class of 2026. [cheering] [applause] My name is David Doll and I am very honored to stand before you on this momentous occasion. There's a song titled All Flowers in Time Bend Towards the Sun. At first, it sounds simple. Eight words, just a nature observation. But the more you really think about it, the more it starts to mean something deeper. Flowers do not just magically face the sun overnight. For starters, the sun is not even out at night. But instead, they grow towards it slowly, steadily, and often without anyone realizing how much they've grown. I think this song title resonates with us a lot. The Titan class of 2026. Over the past four years, we have all been growing.
028Not all at once, not all in the same timeline, not all in the same ways. And for a lot of us, not together. We may have come from different elementary, middle, and high schools. Some of us have moved here from different cities, or even different states. And some of us have lived here our whole lives. But little by little, through every challenge, every success, and every single unexpected moment, we have been changing. Often, growth looks like success. For example, getting a big A+ on the hardest test of the year. Or for your first year at a new high school, you made that basketball team. Maybe success was landing the biggest role in the musical or even just being able to make it from one class to the next without getting lost in the hallways. Success
029is achieving something you once thought was out of reach. But a lot of the time, growth didn't look or feel like success at all. Sometimes it looked like failure, not getting the result you wanted, being called a mediocre student, feeling stuck or questioning if what you are doing is the right choice for your life. But sometimes growth looks like trying again when it would have just been easier to just give up and those moments just as much or even more than the successful ones. Growth is not about being perfect. It is about continuing to move forward even when things do not go the way you may have planned. There were days when we felt confident and ready for anything and days when we felt completely lost. Days when we did not when we had everything
030figured out and days when we did not even know where to start. But through all of it, we kept going. We kept growing and we do not we did not do it alone. At some point in our lives, someone helped us keep moving forward. Someone encouraged us when we needed it, supported us when things were difficult, and believed in us even when we did not believe in ourselves. For me, that person is my mother. She was the one who pushed me when I needed it and reminded me I was capable of more. Even when I didn't want to hear it, she always made sure I kept pushing forward. So, I just want to say thank you to her for your support, patience, and for always helping me find my way back to where I needed
031to be. And I am not the only one who has someone like that. Whether it's a parent, guardian, teacher, coach, or friend, we all have people who have helped us become who we are today. As we leave Hidden Valley and step into whatever comes next, our growth does not does not just stop here. In fact, this is just the beginning. We are all headed in different directions. Some of us have a clear plan and some of us are still figuring things out. And that's okay. Just like flowers, we do not all grow at the same pace. We do not all bloom at the same time and we do not all follow the same path. But we are all growing towards something. And that sun we are bending towards looks different for all of us. For
032some, it's getting into the college of their dreams. For others, it's serving in the military and building a future through discipline and purpose. For others, it is stepping straight into the workforce and chasing the career they have always wanted. But for all of us, it's our goal. Our idea of what a meaningful future looks like. And just like flowers, we will not all reach it at the same time. But what matters is that we keep growing towards it. It is not only about reaching your son, but it is also about who you choose to be in the process of getting there. The world we are stepping into is not perfect. It's confusing. There will be moments when it feels easier to stay quiet, to choose comfort over courage. But we are not meant to stay
033quiet. So be loud in the quiet places. Walk the uneven grounds. And when life gives you two options, you become the third. And when the world tells you to go along silently, it is your job to stand in the middle of the stream and make sure every word you speak is heard. Be the person who challenges what is not right. Be the one who speaks up when no one else will. Be the one who creates change even when it is uncomfortable. Because growth is not just personal, it's powerful. You help change the world. So wherever life takes you next, remember, keep going, keep growing, keep reaching towards your version of the sun. And don't be afraid to stand tall along the way. No matter where you start, no matter how long it takes, and no
034matter how difficult the journey may be, all flowers in time bend towards the sun. Thank you, and congratulations again to the class of 2026. [cheering] >> [applause] [cheering] >> At this time, we would like to honor our graduates with the presentation of diplomas.
