of 2026 graduation ceremony. Today we celebrate the hard work, memories, challenges, and accomp accomplishments that have brought these graduates to this moment. As we take this next step into the future, we honor not only what we have achieved, but the people we have become. At this time, I would like we would like to for everyone to to stand. Please remove your hats as we honor our country with the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Thank you. You may be seated. >> [cheering] >> Hey guys, Miss Green, Dr. Rippy, Miss Mock, Mr. Swanson, faculty and staff, friends and family in attendance today. My name is Andy Lee and
I am the senior class president. I would like to formally welcome you to the 64th annual North Side High School graduation for the class of 2026. [cheering] [applause] >> [applause] >> I vividly remember seeing my sister up on the stage delivering her welcome address for the class of 2017. >> Well, that was nearly a decade ago. And that 9-year-old Andy sitting amongst the crowd is now standing exactly where his sister had stood. [cheering] >> Thank you. I looked up to her then and from that moment I knew I wanted to stand where she had stood. I just didn't expect it to go by so fast. I want to say thank you to the faculty and staff who showed up every single day even when we didn't make it easy. To the friends and families filling
up these seats. You drove here, you dressed up, and some of you cried before you even walked in. We see you and we appreciate you more than anything. To my classmates, it has been the strangest, most memorable, most ridiculous four years of my life. And I would not trade a single moment of it. Now, we live in a world obsessed with results, grades, rankings, acceptance letters, job titles, money, and somewhere along the way, we start measuring ourselves by those things before we've even earned them. I had a school that I wanted more than anything. I applied early, got deferred, got re-evaluated, and got sent to the wait list. For quite a while, that outcome defined me as a person. My worth as a human being was determined on whether a school would admit me. For
months, I was in mental limbo, obsessed with a singular result. Then I thought of my father. He spent years with his hands dirty so mine could stay clean. He did not do that for me to complain about a first world issue on whether I would be admitted to a school or not. He just showed up, did the work, and the outcome of raising a family followed. My mother did the same as all immigrants, believing in something bigger than themselves and trusting the process. The outcome is a byproduct. You cannot control it directly, but you can control the work. And over time, your effort compounds in ways you may not immediately see. Someone once told me that when you aim too high, you will fall. But my response to that is, "What if I fly?" To
my fellow classmates, I dare you to dream big and live a life beyond mediocrity, but also fall in love with the process of becoming great. In front of me, I see people who have incredible dreams. So, be willing to try again and again and again and again. And who knows, by the 30th try and the hundth critique, you might just get exactly what you were after. The people leaving this building most prepared for what what's next aren't the ones who got every result they wanted. They're the ones who kept working when they didn't. So, I guess if there's one thing you can take away from this, do not chase the result and fall in love with the process. Congrats to the class of 2026. And let us take in this once in a-lifetime moment. Hold
on to the incredible memories we've made. And remember, once a Viking, always a Viking. [cheering] [applause] >> [applause] >> Today, it is my honor to recognize the young men and women that will be serving the United States military after graduation. They will be training and serving to protect our great country and our freedoms that we enjoy as a nation. Graduates, at this time, if you have made a commitment to serve in a branch of our military, please stand. >> [applause and cheering] [applause] >> I will now ask any staff members, parents, grandparents, or guests that have served in the military to now stand as well, please. [applause] [cheering] >> [applause] >> graduates that will be serving in the military. Please look around at those that you will be joining in the ranks with those that
have served before you. Remember this day that you put on your uniform for the very first time and be assured that your North family is with you. We are proud of you. We wish you strength and success as you embark on this noble journey. Congratulations and may you always carry the spirit of our school with you. [applause] Congratulations to the class of 2026 and thank you all for being here today. It is my honor to recognize the retirements of two incredibly important members of the North Side High School family, Miss Karen Cole and Miss Melissa Blankenship. [applause] So many of you have probably likely heard the cheerful North Side High School whenever you called the front office. That warm and welcoming voice belongs to Karen Cole, a true North Side Viking through and through. Karen
graduated from Northside in 1982 and spent 11 years working for the Department of Corrections before returning home to Rono County Schools where she's dedicated the last 24 years as an administrative assistant. She has been the face of our front office, the familiar smile at countless athletic events, and one of the strongest supporters of our school community. Karen's presence, kindness, and unwavering support will be deeply missed. Personally, I'm going to miss those morning conversations and all the breakfast we shared together. We also celebrate the retirement of Melissa Blankenship, our outstanding bookkeeper. She began her career with Reno County Public Schools in 2000 as an administrative assistant in the counseling office at Northside Middle School. She then transitioned in 2008 to Northside High School as the bookkeeper, where she has faithfully served ever since. Melissa is known
not only for her dedication and hard work, but also for her fun spirit. From planning parties to masterminding costumes and pranks that brought laughter to our school. On a personal note, I'll miss the frequent can I borrow your window request for cell phone service that always turned into a meaningful conversation in my office. I'll miss you, Scooter. And please join me in thanking Karen and Melissa for their years of dedication, service, and love for the North Side High School community. Their impact on our students, staff, and community will continue to be felt for years to come. While we'll certainly miss their daily presence, we're excited for their new adventure and their well-deserved retirement ahead of them. Congratulations, Karen and Melissa, and thank you for everything you've given our Viking family. [applause] This view will never
get old. Welcome class of 2026. Today we celebrate far more than a diploma. We celebrate a journey, one shaped by growth, challenge, resilience, and moments that have defined who you are becoming. I am Jill Green, the proud principal of North Side High School, and it is truly an honor and a privilege to stand before you on this special day. We are grateful to be joined by our distinguished guests including Dr. Nicely, division superintendent, and school board members Mr. Lynon and Mr. Hudson. Thank you for your continued leadership and unwavering support of public education and of Northside High School. Dr. Nicely, congratulations on a well-deserved retirement, and thank you for the many years of service to the students of Reno County. [applause] I also want to personally thank Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Blankenship for the endless
hours of love you have given to the north side and wish you the best in retirement. You will be missed. [applause] This day has been greatly anticipated by the families and friends of the class of 2026 who join us today. Your support and guidance have been essential in bringing these students to this milestone and you share in this achievement. For many of you, today also brings a sense of nostalgia as you reflect on your own high school graduation. Few moments in life feel as enduring and meaningful as this one. On behalf of the entire North Side team, thank you for the trust you placed in us and for the opportunity to work with these remarkable young adults. >> [applause] >> To the staff of North Side High School seated before me, your work with this
class over the past 720 days has been nothing short of extraordinary. What you have built together reflects a deep commitment to your students and to one another. This has never been just a job. It has been a labor of love, belief, and purpose. You have been a steady beacon. and not only for our students but for this entire community. Working beside you these past six years has been one of the greatest blessings of my career. Thank you. The history and pride of being a Viking is 64 years strong. Rarely does a week go by when I am not out in the community and someone proudly says I'm a North Side graduate. I have even seen a former cheerleader break into the fight zone dance on the spot. Our alumni represent an extraordinary range of individuals.
They have paved the way and set the standard for you. If you are a North Side alum with us today, please stand. Come on. Take a moment to look around, not only to the stands, but also to the staff seated beside of you. >> [applause] >> This extended Viking family has built the foundation, established the culture, and carried the green and gold torch that now passes to you. Thank you. So, here we are. Graduation day, an occasion you have worked toward for years. And while today will always be meaningful, what endures are the moments that shape your perspective and how you respond to challenges. I'd like to share one that has stayed with me since my high school days. The class president of my small graduating class, only about 78 students from a very tiny
school called Royal Retreat High School, was a young man that today we are going to call Hank Jones. Hank transferred to air school during high school and was immediately respected and well-liked. He had it all. charisma, athleticism, popularity, and a prosthetic leg below his left knee. You didn't see that coming, did you? Hank and I were both high jumpers. I had vivid memories of spring afternoons practicing together in the high jump pit. We both qualified for state or senior year. Hank worked tirelessly to achieve that goal. I mostly relied on being 6'4, the flop technique, and luck. At graduation, Hank began his speech by removing his prosthetic leg and placed it on the podium. For those of us who knew him, this wasn't all that unusual, but what followed was the most impactful part of
the speech. Just weeks earlier, Hank had been in a car accident. His prosthetic leg had been pinned under the dashboard, preventing him from escaping the vehicle. Thinking quickly, he removed it and was able to get out safely. He later joked about it, calling it his Houdini move. But at graduation, he shared something deeper. He spoke honestly about his struggles, about the frustration, anger, and sadness he carried as a child with his physical challenge. He talked about how before coming to our school, he had never fully embraced who he was. At rural retreat, he found acceptance. We didn't see a disability. We simply saw Hank, our classmate. He explained the irony that what had once caused him so much pain had, in a moment of crisis, been perhaps life-changing in a positive way. That experience reshaped
how he viewed challenges. His message was simple and powerful. Life is not defined by what happens to you, but how you respond. Let me say that again. Life is not defined by what happens to you, but how you respond. That message has stayed with me 40 years and resonates with me when I look out into this class and I see individuals with stories of strength and resilience. I will not name names, but for some, you have experienced more life in your short 18 years than some do in a lifetime. This community and your classmates have supported your struggles, your challenges, and your successes. And we all as a family celebrate you today. Attitude is everything. Whether you say make lemonade out of lemons, start each day with a smile, or the glass is half full,
that mindset shapes your life, building fortitude, perseverance, and joy long after the details fade. That is what endures. Many of the facts you learned here may fade with time. Sorry, Mr. Malave. may not recall articles of the Constitution, Shakespeare quotes, geometry proofs, or chemical symbols. And that's okay. What you carry with you is far more important. The ability to face challenges, adapt, and move forward with confidence. When I hand you this diploma, I do so knowing you are prepared. You have the tools to be successful. You had the tools to be resourceful, the work ethic to succeed, the soft skills to thrive in the workforce, and the selfdetermination to adapt. You are opportunity ready, whatever that opportunity may be. You carry with you not only what you have learned, but who you have become. It
is no accident that I greeted you in the lobby each morning or stopped you in the halls throughout the day. You walk through our doors with unique stories, challenges, and hopes. Our goal was simple, for you to feel safe, valued, cared for, and engaged during your time here. If we made your life even a little better, I hope that impact will carry far beyond the walls of North Side. When starting this position six years ago, one of the biggest reservations I had was delivering the commencement speech. This is a stressful, high pressure situation and I really don't like the spotlight on me ever. What I did not anticipate was that commencement would become one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. Standing here each year, watching students cross this stage with such vivid memories
as as the of them as ninth graders. Witnessing dreams take shape and celebrating resilience, growth, and possibility has been an absolute privilege. I have loved being part of the Viking community. I have loved the students, the families, the staff, the traditions, and the pride that runs so deeply through North Side High School. I have quite simply loved being the principal of North Side High School. This place has shaped me just as surely as it has shaped generations of graduates. While my role may change, my connection to North Side will not. I will forever be a Northside Viking, proud of this school, grateful for this community, and confident in its future. Class of 2026, thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. And remember, once a Viking, we will always be a Viking.
Go Vikes. Congratulations. I am so proud of you. [applause] >> [cheering] >> It is my great privilege to introduce the students who have earned the highest academic honor of their high school careers, our validictorians. Through years of dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, these individuals have set the standard for what it means to lead by example. More than just top scholars, they have been leaders in our school community, in our classroom, on the stages and fields, and in countless quiet moments of support and kindness to their peers. Their hard work reflects not only personal determination, but also the support of their families, teachers, and friends. Please join me in welcoming our valadictorians as they come forward. At this time, please welcome my great friend Sam Don. [cheering] [applause] >> Hello. First, I want
to thank everybody that has helped me to get here standing in front of you all. Thank you to my family, my parents, my sisters V and Kim, and my cats, Scarlet and Miso. Thank you to all of my friends on days where I really, really did not want to come to school. I was still happy to see them when I came in the doors despite that. Thank you to the teachers and the faculty. They've guided me through everything he everything I know in my time here. Thank you to the substitutes. Thank you to the janitors, our lunch people, our IT guy and resource officer. And thank you, of course, to our bus drivers. I literally couldn't attend North Side without my bus driver. So, shout outs to Mr. Green. [applause] Everybody sitting in front of
me today has worked so hard to get here. It's taken us our whole lives, literally. Whether you've been coasting through school or striving for high achievements, school will be one of the biggest steps forward for all of us. But it's important to remember that school is just one of the many, many steps we'll take. Our lives aren't dictated by what we accomplish in school, but rather by the choices we make. And the biggest choices come after high school, where we come to a crossroads. When it comes to moments like this, I often think back to a scene from one of my favorite shows, a cartoon called Avatar the Last Airbender. In it, one of the characters in the show comes to a crossroads of his own. He must choose between the following moral he must
choose between the following. The morals and beliefs that he's held on to for his whole life, or to abandon those beliefs and [snorts] walk an unfamiliar path to find a new destiny. He's about to come to a rash decision, but there's another character who wants him to think this through. His beloved uncle. Instead of telling him just to do what's right, he asks these two questions. Who are you? And what do you want? In life, we often encounter decisions that are much like in the show, not black and white. It's easy to make a decision and say, "That seemed like the right thing to do," or, "That's what people expected me to do." But that kind of thinking won't always give you the answer you're looking for. Look inward and ask yourself the big questions.
Make decisions that define who you are, determined by what you want. To the class of 2026, thank you. [cheering] [applause] Good afternoon everyone. My name is Kelly Ha and other than serving as your student body president, I am deeply honored to stand before you today as one of your valadictorians. First, I want to thank everyone who helped this class reach this reach this moment. our teachers, families, friends, and even the people who challenge us along the way. Every interaction, lesson, and setback has shaped us into who we are today. And I truly mean all of it, the good and the bad. Because without those experiences, I wouldn't be standing here as someone I'm proud to be. Now, I want to be honest with you guys for a second. I'm not naturally the smartest person in
the room. What I do have is a strong work ethic. Something my parents taught me through their actions and not just their words. My mom and dad came to this country with almost nothing, carrying more hope than certainty. Everything I've achieved is built on the sacrifices they made and this and I will spend the rest of my life trying to honor that. Looking out to all of you, I don't just see classmates. I see future engineers, doctors, artists, leaders, and people who would change lives in ways that we can't even imagine yet. But I also see people who have struggled quietly, who have doubted in themselves, who have faced challenges that no one will fully understand. But the fact that you are here today means you made it through all of that. So, if there
is one thing I want you to take from the speech, it's this. Life will not go exactly as planned. And that is okay. You can map everything out perfectly and still one moment can change your entire path. But that doesn't mean you failed. It means you are growing and changing. And it's important that you let that happen. There will be times when things feel uncertain, when the future feels overwhelming, when giving up seems seems easier than pushing forward. In those moments, remember that you are stronger than you think. And you have already proven that by being here today. Do not give up on your goals, your dreams, or on yourself. Because one day you'll look back at this moments like these as the beginning of everything. Because youth is never coming back. But the most
beautiful moment in life is yet to come. Congratulations, class of 2026. We made it. [cheering] [applause] >> [applause] >> Greetings to the friends and family of the class of 2026 and to the teachers and administrators who've been with us the whole Today, on behalf of my class, I'd like to thank you all for your care, guidance, and of course, all the snacks. In short, everything that you've all done to help us reach this milestone in our lives. Sometimes it's still hard to believe how far we've come, even though I'm standing here. And it feels like Mr. Parks was setting things on fire in freshman Earth Science class like yesterday. And between now and then, each of us has had our trials, and we've become new people. Life has thrown us curveballs and late nights and
the same exams. And even though it's been difficult, each of us is here today. In this room, across the country and the world, is a whole generation setting out in our turn to become the next architects, artists, mentors, and experts. But that's still a ways off. Right now, the structure of our lives is about to end. And we have endless opportunities. the uncertainty that brings is something shared with every generation before us, but also the hope, excitement, and potential we're learning to develop. And while for some that's academic, I've watched so many of my classmates grow into leaders and performers, builders, first responders, and so many other things our world needs. If I were looking for a moral, the ability to become anything with dedication would certainly stand out. And that is true. I'm proof.
Dedication has made words I wrote in my journal years ago true. Runner, captain, valadictorian. But I think an equally important lesson has been that time is precious. So yes, challenge yourself, but have fun. Find your people, your passion, whatever brings you joy, and fight for that just as hard. Because at the end of the day, I will remember runs in the rain with my friends more than any award or achievement. And with that, Vikings, for the last time, be safe, be respectful, be responsible, and I look forward to seeing who we all become next. Congratulations. [applause] >> [cheering] [applause] >> NORTH SIDE CLASS OF 2026. [screaming] CONGRATS, GUYS. YOU ALL SURVIVED THE Dehall intersection in between classes. All right, before I get rolling, I heard some students in the back room. They were talking about
um making a money wager on a on a word that they thought would or wouldn't be said from the stage. So, I'm going to ruin it. >> Co. All right. My my Venmo, by the way, is do Josh- Malave at I'm I'm just kidding. All right. Seriously, though, I'm honored um that you all chose me to get the privilege of addressing you on your special day. And on behalf of the teachers that are sitting right behind you, I really do want to say congratulations. We're proud of you. Now, I taught most of you that are sitting in front of me. So, y'all know about it. One more question of the day. >> Oh, yeah. Okay. When was the last time that you all were proud of yourself? >> Did you all say right now? Can
we say that together on the count of three? One, two, THREE. RIGHT NOW. That's right. Okay. This big moment. All right. Now, I'm talking to everyone that's in here. Okay. So, all your family and friends, I'm talking to you all right now. Can we show them how proud of them that we are? Can we do that? Yeah. [cheering] All right, here's what we're going to do. Everyone in this in this gym that's that's here for a student today, I want you to think of a name of someone that's sitting in green right now that you're proud of. And on the count of three, we're going to say it at the same time. And I want them to feel it. I want the students to feel it. Y'all ready? All right. One, two, THREE. [cheering] >>
[applause] >> Do y'all feel that? >> Heck yeah. You should feel that. You all should be proud of yourselves. That's real pride. Y'all accomplished something big. 13 years of getting up early or maybe them forcing you out of bed. Show and tells, recess, learning your ABCs, puberty and voice cracks, stressing about that text you sent to your crush that they never responded to, doing makeup in the car, finishing an assignment that was due yesterday, SOS, balancing school expectations with real life problems outside of school. But you made it. You all are here and that matters. Okay. So, now what? [snorts] Some of y'all are thinking about careers, college, money, family, or wherever life takes you next. Those questions matter. They can feel heavy. But guess what? Y'all are going to figure it out. You are
going to figure it out. And I mean that. I know you will. And we are all behind you. Okay? A lot of people now spend a lot of their lives focused on what's next. the goal, the achievement, the milestone. The truth is that mindset can sometimes consume us even to this day in the age of 34 for me. Okay. But if there's one thing I want to leave you with before I leave the stage, I'm realizing the sobering fact that this is the last time I may get to say some words to you all. And that's that incredible joy often exists in the life in between. The life between the accomplishments, the life between the milestones, the life between the big moments people post online, dream jobs, success, relationships, those things matter. But most of
life isn't made of milestones. Most of it happens in between them. And there's real joy there. You all know what I'm talking about. You ready? >> Walking into that class, realizing the cool subs in there. Shout out Mr. Crees. Yeah. [cheering] Okay. Going to that study hall with all your friends in it to the detriment of that teacher. That time Mr. Park lit something on fire for the sake of science. When a power outage sends you back to your bed. Friday night lights. Random late night hangs with your friends. Every conversation you've literally had with Miss Yo. [snorts] When the due date for that assignment you didn't do gets pushed back, that feels good. Going out to eat with your friends that you care about, that's life. So, as you move into your next chapters
and experience the highs and lows of chasing your goals. Be intentional about enjoying the life happening around those goals, too. Laugh louder. Stay at the dinner table longer. Step on the crunchy leaf. Hug harder. Say the kind thing we've been too anxious to say out loud. Celebrate other people's wins. Go outside. Try something new. Be goofy or whimsy. I'm looking at some of my whimsies. Oh yeah. Love people well. Say yes when you can because reaching goals is great. But don't miss the other 99% of life where joy is waiting too. The years move faster than you think and they're better when you open to enjoying all of it. Especially the life in between. Thank you guys. I love you all. We're so proud of you. Seek joy in the life between. Not just in
the big moments, but in the ordinary ones, too. Pride and joy. Class of 2026. Once a Viking. >> All right. selfie. [cheering] >> Thanks, guys.
