on specific personal matters is not permitted in an open meeting item 5.0 guest speakers and student presentations for inner parish ministries well good evening and it's quite ironic that we just got that lovely letter from inner parish ministry because we're actually here tonight to give them some major kudos and i want to introduce elia hart who is the president and ceo of inner parish ministry good evening thank you donna and doug it's a delight to be here and i really appreciate this opportunity and thank you was it really was interesting that he had the letter at the right time and here we are tonight as some of you may or may not know ipm food pantry has been serving the community for almost 60 years now and we've been working very very closely with the
forest hills school district we love the connection we have with our students your students and it's amazing with the power packs they provide us every year sometimes over 6 000 power packs that we in turn give out to those families in need throughout the entire community so we are blessed to have such a great friendship with forest hills school district and um on one cold snowy um february day i got a phone call from donna and she said hey um we'd like to do something special uh for ipm and in particular for the the families that you serve and i said donna this is just amazing because we've been trying to figure out what we could do with all the excitement around this little football team we have do you remember the bengals and going
to the super bowl and all that i said you know it would be really nice if we could do something super special for our clients and their families and believe it or not it means the world to our families to have something a little different when they come to the pantry so we worked with a local food truck um business sweets and meats barbecue i don't know if any of you have i see some heads nodding up and down anyway so sweets and meats we wanted to do something special for our clients they said you know we would love to bring our food truck to ipm and hand out hot meals for your families now please understand this is something our families are not used to receiving and in fact one family came up to
us and said wait this food truck it's here for us we actually get hot food that we can take to our families and have a hot meal and we said absolutely and if you could see the astonishment in their eyes that's we that this was something unique and special for them we may take going to a food truck for granted or running out after a long day at work and getting mcdonald's and bringing it home to us that may be something that is typical but to a lot of our families this is really a luxury for them it was just a unique treat so talking with donna i said you know it'd be really nice if um we could work together and maybe get support from the community and we came up with who day
for a hot meal and donna and all the forest hills school groups came together and we were amazed at the amount of support and appreciation people gave to our families and i think we had several different levels of giving and the simplest one was nine dollars for uh joe burrows at joe burrow my husband always corrects me i must say it took me a while to drop the s so forgive me but for nine dollars for joe and it went up to over a hundred dollars and uh most of the money that was raised for our families came from this community and like i said it just means the world to us because we can't do what we do without the support of this community so we are so so grateful and i'll turn it
over to to donna thank you well first of all i want to make sure introduce again just so if you don't know i'm donna lava i'm president of forest hills teachers association i'm also our community partnership advisor here in the school district and this is doug baker my dear friend who's the president of ops 177 and when we had this opportunity what we wanted to do as our school was to do something that would give back to our community in a time of need but also i always like a good challenge and we did 5600 was our original goal and that was to honor the bengals in their 56th appearance in the super bowl obviously and instead what we were able to do was we have a little present and elida told me tonight i
just want to make sure everybody knows we were able to raise ten thousand dollars in seven days [Applause] josh you might have to help him with this [Laughter] but seriously the most important thing is i know elida's being very kind and sweet but just to tell you that i was sending out communications and doing lots of things with the staff and everybody was really excited and our teachers and our bus drivers our custodians and our peers and everybody was really involved but really the most important thing there was we were in four days and she goes we hit it i hit i hit him what uh she goes you hit your goal so we hit our goal in four days that's how excited our staff was to do this and i have to tell you
it from doug and i know i'm going to speak for you a little bit that's okay doug and i we got to go down and be part of that and there is not enough words to say what this school community can do when it pulls together so i'm very grateful and like to thank you for giving us a chance to do something special for our school and for our community and we really appreciate that [Applause] this isn't going to be easy to cash thank you donna and enter parish ministries item 6.0 accommodations and recognitions that's kyle fender all right i want to thank everybody for being here tonight i get to do one of the best parts of my job and then to celebrate one of our outstanding students at anderson high school standing next
to me is cerrone tafara a graduating senior who throughout her time in anderson high school has accomplished many many things we're going to focus on two of those things tonight and celebrate some special accomplishments that she has made along the way this year the two that we're going to recognize tonight are cerrone's selection to the united states senate youth program and also her advancement to semifinalist status for a very prestigious scholarship known as the cook college scholarship the first of those condom nations is cerrone's selection to the united states senate youth program cerrone was one of the top student leaders that got an opportunity to be a part of the 104 national student delegation they will also each receive a ten thousand dollar college scholarship for their undergraduate study the ussyp was created by senate
resolution 324 in 1962 and has been sponsored by the senate and fully funded by the hearst foundation since its inception the impetus of the program as stated in the senate testimony is to increase young americans understanding of the interrelationships of the three branches of government learn the caliber and responsibilities of federally elected and appointed officials and emphasize the vital importance of democratic decision making not only for america but for people around the world each year this extremely competitive merit-based program provides the most outstanding high school students two from each state so that means cerrone was only one is one of only two students from across the entire state of ohio selected for this the also students from the district of columbia and the department of defense education activity with an extensive week-long study of the
federal government and the people who lead it the overall mission of the program is to help instill within each class of ussyp student delegates more profound knowledge of the american political process and a lifetime commitment to public service cerrone as a senior of anderson high school serves as the president of the student body she also participates in our student council and was inducted into our national honor society earlier this year and actually i guess over the summer cerrone was elected to buckeye's girl state where she was selected by her peers to serve as governor there so i snuck a third thing to celebrate in here that was my sneaky way to do that cerrone intends to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics international affairs or political science after college she would like to work
at the united nations with the eventual goal of becoming the u.s ambassador to the u.n there we go but we're just getting started as i mentioned there's two main things we're here to celebrate for cerrone cerrone has been announced as a semi-finalist for the prestigious cook college scholarship the jack kent cook foundation announces the selection announced the selection of 411 high school seniors across the country as semi-finalists for this prestigious scholarship the highly selective scholarship provides high achieving students with financial need of up to fifty five thousand dollars annually for four years of college to enable them to attend a top college or university i think you're going to a fairly high-ranking college ivy league i didn't quite make it that far college scholarship semi-finalists are chosen from a pool of over 5 300 applicants
that would put cerrone even if she did not advance beyond the semifinalist status in the top seven and a half percent of all applicants the 2022 cook college scholarships will be announced the winners will be announced in april so we have our fingers crossed there students applied from all 50 states as well as washington dc puerto rico guam the virgin islands the america and american samoa and represented 378 different high schools cook college scholars are select based on exceptional academic ability and achievement financial need persistence and leadership students must be current high school seniors residing in the united states so as we wait anxiously for april we want to wish saron the best of luck in that process and at this time i'd like to encourage the superintendent recommend to the board of education to
commend the student for her achievement and that a certificate of condemnation be presented to her i wholeheartedly agree with that accommodation commendation commendation important letter in there i'll make a motion to commend surround sorry for her achievement and distinction congratulations second [Applause] dr rasmussen yes mr bib yes mrs jonas yes mrs stewart yes mrs hospital yes we're tweeting right now congratulations [Applause] okay you ready for me seven point no not seven six six point two betsy and i were having a chat about whether i should come in front go around come around anyway i knew i was going to trip if i came this way so we have a lot to celebrate in this district and i appreciate the time just because everything that we do is about our students and the way that they
are able to present and to show up every day is amazing and it is worth the time for us to sit down and really give them some respect so as part of our strategic vision we have prioritized the development of what we call an epic culture in an epic culture we empower others through personalized learning pathways and strategies to encourage creativity and innovation through collaboration our hope is to support the portrait of a learner and the next generation skills for today's learners these include things like critical thinking creativity problem solving collaboration innovation allows us to do just that innovation allows us to create a culture that empowers our students to achieve personal success and it allows us as adults to provide those authentic learning opportunities that engage and empower each student to achieve that success
so as part of their strategic planning each of our schools designed and this past month nagel and turpin implemented learning experiences that extend thinking encourage creativity and enhance problem solving and so because it is part of their um annual goals i wanted to make sure that we had an opportunity to thank them and show off their great work so first i want to have anita if you'd like to come up and she came with some guests well good evening um so i'm anita eshelman i'm the principal here at nagel and i just wanted to share that bringing back a student-led conference to nagel after covet and the restrictions of the pandemic has been a key piece of our innovation cornerstone team strategic vision while as principal i helped to craft that vision and the plans
for the day it was really the work of our innovation cornerstone team that that made brought this brought this whole idea and this vision to light that team included leah souter rose arnell jeremy varner matt heredia and ali petric so tonight i'm going to turn it over to them to tell you about their work and some of our awesome student presenters from the day ali all right so a quick um word about what the nagel new conference was um so news stands for navigate experience and wonder this is our second new conference and the whole idea of it is it's offering students a chance to participate in a professional conference style atmosphere where students would go to see a keynote speaker followed by breakout sessions of their choice and we had all of these breakout
sessions were put on for students by students so many many middle school students and other students we had fhsc staff members and some of our community partners also presenting so we had to give you guys like a a true picture of what that looked like we had nagel student presenters we had 32 amazing presenters come from either anderson or turpin for the day to present to our middle school students we had 30 adult presenters 40 staff mentors who had worked with our nagel student presenters over the course of about a month and a half to prepare them for this day we had 28 amazing pto volunteers to help everything from conduct the flow of traffic in the school to help out with attendance and and and be present in our school and then we had
two awesome keynote speakers to help spread that message of innovation we had uh an amazing day my name is matt heredia by the way um it was awesome and to continue sort of our stats for the day you can see our wonderful schedule that was our master schedule that's uh the size of ali and we had 1138 personalized student schedules for the day and 216 total sessions that the kids could um uh be a part of throughout the day so it's absolutely unbelievable i wanted to share um a couple comments that we got back from the kids about the day um that was amazing and that was written with all capital letters the day was inspirational and fun best ever all caps and my favorite day all caps we got lots of all caps uh
comments from the kids so um we uh love to hear from the kiddos uh so we're gonna turn it over to max he's gonna start us off and tell us about his experience hi my name is maxwell castillo and i'm in the eighth grade at the nagel news conference i taught how people had a wheelie on a mountain bike it was really fun my favorite part was just seeing people learn and when they were learning having fun doing it [Music] i learned that i was pretty good at teaching and that it was very fun and it showed me leadership in a bunch of different ways i did this because it was one of my favorite hobbies and i love it so much i even spoke in front of the board of edu or board zoning
appeals with mr weaver to put in a mountain bike trail in nagle thank you [Applause] my name is jay esheman i'm an 8th grade and i taught a creative writing workshop at the nagel new conference i chose to teach about creative writing because it has always been a passion of mine and it's something that i know other students are interested in as well my favorite thing about presenting was giving people the chance to explore an individual interest of theirs and learn in a way that they don't usually get to seeing their engagement in what i was teaching was very fulfilling and i also learned that presenting is one of my strengths which is super cool and definitely a skill that i'll use in the future i'm even using it right now i enjoyed the bottle
caps to benches service opportunity with nine united for one of my sessions as well and overall the nagel new conference was an awesome and unique learning experience and one that i hope future students get to have fun with too [Applause] my name is anu angelos and i'm a seventh grader and i taught a session about making b beaded wristbands my favorite part about this was sharing with my people with people my love for bracelet making i learned that the people who joined my class were the ones that made the class fun i chose this topic because it's a craft that brings people together my favorite part of the day was the keynote speakers they're like really inspiring thank you hi i'm hayden morman now i'm in the seventh grade i taught a little bit about
archery 101 which is some of the basics of archery i have nine national titles in archery one of the big things i learned was that teachers make teaching look way too easy when you're up there in front of everyone it gets kind of nerve-wracking so that was one of my favorite things to kind of learn is that they make it look way easy um i really love just like teaching in front of everyone though because it was fun and i kind of felt my zone teaching my passion and helping everybody else maybe get into it overall the whole day though was lots of fun and i loved all the cool projects and speaking in front of everyone and looking at everybody else's passions and work so kim before these students get away do you have
you have some additional we have actually turpin is with us tonight as well because they also so i don't know if you want to speak to them first i'll wait that's okay thank you because sorry mr spencer if you'd like to come up with miss albert you're going to just let tiffany do it come on and that we are showcasing nagel and turpin tonight but these are events that happen in other schools as well so we just wanted to give you a sample before the spring hi thanks for having us tonight i'm tiffany elberfeld i'm our innovation specialist at turpin high school two years ago when my nagel colleagues decided to have the nagel new conference for the first time i got to kind of watch alongside help a little bit bring some students over
from turpin and then we were so excited to plan the same event at turpin and it was planned for march of 2020. so unfortunately we did not get to host that event but i was so excited to like jump in replan and plan this for this year so we've been really excited to launch that event um similar to the nagel new conference our spartan summit as we call it is a student-led conference offering many opportunities for students mostly to lead explore connect and grow so they're hopefully like connecting with each other meeting people that maybe they don't get to meet in their classes all the time working with staff members in different you know ways and seeing things from them as well and so eventually we all like learn something new and have some fun
with our colleagues and peers that day um some similar stats that we have and that is we had 95 student presenters we absolutely could not have this event without those you know i could plan events all day long but without 95 you know kids really stepping up and making a difference we cannot hold the event so i'm so grateful to them we also had 21 staff members who led sessions in you know different capacities as well we reached out to some local post-secondary reps and so they were able to come in and do some university and college sessions military sessions and just get have those conversations with students in the end we ended up with 88 unique sessions and then as those are offered you know a few times a few different times throughout the
day we ended up with 240 different sessions offered throughout the day and then 20 of our students were really excited to move forward and go join our national new team so that they could present for middle schoolers and kind of carry their use their session again you know carry that forward and give back to their middle school friends our master schedule was we literally just took our whole normal seven bell day and just revamped the entire day and we built in some time too for teachers to be able to go explore some sessions because sometimes as a staff member you know you're there you're providing um some supervision and you're just kind of in your room and we wanted them to get out and go get to watch students and go try different things as
well so we revamped our whole schedule and built that in so that that would give that time for them and then also so our students could go to all kinds of sessions and have those opportunities for the day our slides will be back up in a moment okay almost adam samuels is logging in all right and just to give you a quick glimpse of what our day looked like here's a short little video surgery skills with bananas one of our language arts teacher actually has a sibling [Music] highlighted all kinds of different interests [Music] and so we would love to you know have taken you through all 88 of those sessions or bring all 95 of those students with us but obviously that would take quite a while for us to get through those but
we are very very honored to have two of our student session leaders with us and we'll start out here with lauren ferguson testing okay great my name is lauren ferguson i'm a senior at turpin high school i had the opportunity to run the how to crochet session at the spartan summit during my session i taught some of the basics in crochet and a stitch that would allow people who attended my session to create their own projects um i've loved crocheting for years i've made a lot of different projects unfortunately i don't have any of them with me today but just imagine if you will and i love the opportunity to inspire the same passion that i feel for crocheting and my fellow students and i really enjoyed the opportunity to lead and teach others about
something that's really helped me de-stress i find crocheting very relaxing and i love the spartan summit i got to see some other sessions too and i really enjoyed them so hopefully this continues for years to come and maybe anderson can get in on the fun next year thank you lauren she did a great job she led four sessions of how to crochet and they were very popular so she was trying to keep up with everyone and do those hands-on activities next we have keith allred okay um i'm keith uh i led the intro to improv class um and basically what it was is is when when you're acting but you don't have a script so um from that picture you see that's a game called that we played called bus stop um and what happens
in the game is you get on the bus as different characters and you adapt to new characters as they come on and that just taught them how to like change and adapt to new situation and while they're acting and i really enjoyed just like i really enjoyed teaching and so i really enjoyed like getting to be able to teach people about my own passions for acting and uh theater and stuff like that um and i think that's it yeah [Applause] so thanks so much to lauren and keith for being here with us tonight if we just want to advance through some of these just to kind of show some other sessions that existed we would love to you know have been able to take you through all these but you can kind of get an
idea of what the day was like simple self-defense and again it's so hard to list them all but there's just a quick snapshot of a lot of other awesome sessions that were led by students and staff throughout the day i just want to give a quick thank you to my nagel colleagues because had i not you know experienced this with them two years ago and then seen the possibilities you know and we do this in our other buildings too as kim mentioned you know i've been able to like see those opportunities and then you know start to move that up and plan those for the high school level so that's really exciting and then finally i was really transparent with my students um our presenters with my colleagues during this process because it's definitely taking
a risk right like there's a point in planning this where you're like oh my goodness you know like this is a lot but i think like if we don't take these risks as adults and have these opportunities in our schools like how do we give our students the opportunities right so hopefully with events like this we're starting to give students more and more and more of opportunities to you know eventually portray this portrait of a learner and to gain and embody these skills thank you [Applause] so uh matt and ali and tiffany thank you so much for your leadership in taking this on and offering these opportunities for our students and i think for all of us who are here when you think about the forest hills school district and you think about the opportunities
we have we've been talking a lot in last few months about ensuring that our students are having opportunities to be engaged in learning in many different ways so that they are connected with their school so that they can experience and enjoy their passions and share those with others and this is another experience of the many things that we're doing to try to connect our students in different ways to those things that are related to standards within the curriculum in ways that make sense to them in ways that are engaging to them in ways that offer them opportunities to show other their others their gifts their talents and and what we heard here were a few words that were kind of interesting like my passions and if i'm passionate about something and i learn about it
and i'm going to engage in that after school and i think one of the best parts about learning is being able to express what you've learned to someone else and that means you really have gained some talents in that area or some aptitude in that area that is significant and we see this not only in these types of activities one of the things i'd also like to to encourage us all to remember is the role modeling that takes place and the engagement and the collaboration that's taking place between our more senior students and those that are coming up through the system so we have great role models offering opportunities for younger students to be able to see that's what i'd like to be like and there are teachers in all there are there are teachable
moments in all of our lives and taking advantage of those opportunities i think are exceptional and we do that i think very well in our school district when you link this up to things like our spark night and our innovation nights where we have this type of learning going on in this type of of opportunity for kids to be in real life experiences that gets us closer to that portrait of a learner that we're talking about those skill sets that students are going to need to know beyond the standards beyond demonstrating knowledge of specific things within curriculum but are they really able to communicate can they solve problems do they have empathy and collaboration and relationship development as they are beginning to be young adults and hopefully off to college off to a career off
to the military or anything else that inspires them through activities like the ones we have here today so to all of you students it is inspiring to us to me specifically as an adult to know that we have so many educators within our system and i would encourage you like our teachers have had to do to think about that virtual component with teaching and how you can engage with others in a larger platform with the things that you know and the things that you are able to share with others so thank you so much for what you've done to make these uh successful and thank the adults who are involved our teachers and parents who support these type of activities these are very good things for kids that extend that classroom and and have our
children engaged in learning in many many different ways so thank you all so much for for your participation i greatly appreciate it [Applause] moving on to item 7.0 district updates from the superintendent thank you mrs housfeld and i meet every thursday we plan on behalf of the board of education every thursday we talk about the week that has passed and activities that we're involved in and this is something that the board president and the superintendent have been doing in this district for many years and so our conversations have been quite encouraging and they've been very helpful to me and and uh in planning that we're doing and so there's two things that we talked about the last time we were together that mrs house felt and i agree that would be uh important to share
with everyone the first has to do with upcoming wellness related meetings and activities and we've tried to expand our footprint if you will in this area by offering more educational opportunities and more engaging opportunities for parents and so on march 21st for those of you who are taking notes at 6 30 pm we will be offering a virtual presentation it is the forest hills school district mental health partners share insights evening and we will have parent presenters from our school district they will be dr jennifer wright berryman whose name you have probably heard an associate professor at the university of cincinnati's college of allied health sciences and an expert in suicidology we'll talk about the importance of community connection and the relationship of the community to suicide prevention we will also have then chrissy myers
educational liaison from child focus who has been working with the district for many years child focus has been doing that and they will share information about signs of anxiety and depression among the youth within our schools they will also uh or forest hills is proud to partner with child focus to offer mental health services and other supports for our students as we move through our tiered interventions is working with students on all sorts of things related to not only academics but to their health and their wellness so those are two big things that are that that is one big event that's coming up and that's going to be on march 21st we're really excited about that it's been a lot of work to review those presentations and work with those organizations to ensure that what
we're sharing is linked to the district's strategic vision and the components of the strategic vision i want to thank kelly brazo for her work and also betsy ryan who's been helping kelly along the way to ensure that the relationships and the transitions of responsibilities are moving in a positive direction so that's very good the other thing is optimizing mental success in sports for coaches and this was an association with mike glenn in the group that he works with so we will have lauren ammon and mike glenn that will be on thursday march 31st that will be at 6 30 p.m at nagel middle school right here but that is a coaches clinic and that is talking about the psychology of sport if you will and the anxiety and tension in sport and how that impacts
students and so if you have a student who um a couple of situations a seventh grade student who has never before had to go through a situation where maybe they would be cut from the sport what types of things should we be saying to students how should we be encouraging them how should we help them through those moments of high anxiety could be a student who's in the high school level who has a big game coming up or she has something to some sort of an activity related to either sport or maybe even a performance but she also has a couple of exams that week and she's got a few other things on her mind and the prom is coming up and all that is is working on kids and so how are we helping
them work through that so these are uh individuals that will be working with our coaches to try to help them with encouraging kids through those difficult moments in their roles as athletes and we believe it's good to expand out to coaches because they have that is an extension of the classroom and so many times the coach spends just as much time with students as parents and oftentimes as their teachers do so we want to make sure that we are building capacity among those who are working with our kids beyond the school day to ensure that we are um meeting the students needs that also would come with some continued qpr training that we have for students the other thing that mrs housefeld and i talked about was the march 9th work session of the board
and i have said on numerous occasions since the transition into the five people in their new role as one board we've had a lot of good transitional meetings a lot of good information shared back and forth we continue to work on plans we continue to take a look at our facilities take a look at our curriculum take a look at everything that's happening within our school district to try to begin to make small or i should say short-term long-term sorts of priorities so a few things that we've been talking about at or that we talked about at our work session that we wanted to share with that were priorities of the board and things we're going to continue to work on are mental health and wellness for our students and for our staff and how
we build relationships and how we build educational opportunities for everyone within our school system all of our stakeholders and how we can partner with others who can provide those same types of services for our students we talk about and every board talks about the cost avoidance what you know did you hear the words cost avoidance that doesn't necessarily mean cuts that means cost avoidance ways that you can be efficient ways that we can review things that we're doing materials that we're purchasing offerings that we have and how can we be efficient with that and so the board has been talking about those things we've talked a lot about the reorganization of our website and making sure that it it has links that are easy and easily accessible for parents to be able to find information
to continue to drive with all of our media well i should say with all of our communication everyone to the website for that one-stop shop to be able to navigate through that and be able to receive the resources and the materials and the information that people need to be um that need to have that in their lives as they're working with their students and with the school system so the website is being reorganized and i'll meet again with josh bazan who is our new communication coordinator we have an entire plan that we're going to be bringing to the board of education on that and i think that prominently displayed on that will be mental wellness opportunities for parents and information for them and resources for them so we will continue to expand the knowledge about
wealth or health and wellness for our students on our website we talk about standard operational procedures over the last couple of years with covid visitors to schools guest speakers to classrooms fundraisers in schools what are the standard operational practices for organizations that are working for the schools working with the schools those that are raising funds those that are offering gifts in kind or those that are offering opportunities of their personal expertise to our students in classrooms what does that look like how are how are we communicating to parents what's happening within the schools and how they can link into more information about that it's been a significant interest of our board of education to make sure that our parents are notified and knowledgeable about the things that are happening within our schools and within our
classrooms and so standing opera standard operational procedures is something that we all kind of know but we need to go back and take a look at those because over two years with covid sort of not been doing things like we have in the past meaning we haven't been face to face so we're reviewing those types of things we're talking about that with our administrators and with our teachers and i think that's a good thing for everybody from safety concerns to curricular concerns to the introduction of materials and introduction of subjects it's a good thing for us to be thinking about standard operational practices within our schools the other thing the board has been talking about is the district's facilities and many aspects of the facilities from the roofs to the sidewalks to the ventilation to
all of those types of things that we need to be mindful of as we continue to take care of these great facilities that our community has provided us and so john eckert has been working with the board very closely and the rest of his team on ensuring that we have a preventative maintenance plan that that has uh short-term long-term uh goals aspirations as well as the financial budgeting to ensure that the things that are the most important are taken care of and that we put plans together to be able to address those more long-term items and so that's been a big discussion among our board we have a sports medicine contract in our school district where we have an association with an agency or a hospital in this case we've had a great 10-year relationship
with mercy hospital like all contracts in the district it's time to renew that so it's it's not a rfp it is a request for bids it is a bit it is an rfp i go nowhere without john um but what that is is we're going to be updating our contract uh our our ability for training for our students in uh athletics to ensure that we have all the things that we need and so that's something that is a primary concern of our board of education because the contract with mercy health is over this particular year so we have other organizations that are interested as is mercy and john's working through that process to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to come to the table and talk about the services that they would provide to
our students and to our coaches and athletes as we continue to have opera have athletic training and athletic health assistance for our students and for our coaches i believe it's a good thing the business advisory council that sort of went away over the last two years because of covid and the many things that have caused this all to be far apart the zooms and that just wasn't working well and so there's an interest a high interest in ensuring that we have a business advisory committee or council that is meeting as the former one did on a more um regular basis and so i'm i'm encouraged that that's also something that we're going to be doing and and i would say as i worked with the business advisory council in years past as atlanta as well
and other folks in our schools that's when you have experts in your community market specialists accounting specialists bankers investment folks individuals who work in the field of finance and economics who are coming in and they're actually kind of sitting down they are not they're not making recommendations but what they're doing is reviewing what's happening and ensuring that we have best practice metrics within the things that we're doing with large businesses or agencies who are working with our school district to ensure that there's kind of like a safety net for us like a person who gets confused on a bid versus something else we want to make sure that that as educators we have that compliment of our community in the room with us kind of assisting us and helping us along the way with some
of those thoughts we want to align our k-12 curriculum we've heard a lot about that lately what does that mean ensuring that kids across all of the elementaries are at the same pace for the most part same materials for the most part same standards same sort of instructional practices same types of interventions first tier second tier third tier that we are consistent as an organization so we want to make sure that we're doing that and with the things that we're asking them to do and the materials that we're providing to them to ensure that we have consistency among that and that includes our two high schools very very uh excellent high schools as are our elementaries in our middle school coordinating what's happening in classrooms having teachers work together to understand the instructional practices that
they're putting into place how they're impacting students and talking about that and ensuring that we have um to the best of our ability equal opportunities recognizing just like these children who are up here today they have their own individual passions their personal desires and things that motivate them so although we want all of these things to be as consistent as possible for our students we're also in a time period and an environment where we want to build other things outside of just the academics for kids to build their passions and to help them be successful in life so there are variances at times but not in the things that we provide as far as the curriculum is concerned and that's about that portion of a learner that we just talked about it's about problem-solving skills
it's about empathy just demonstrating empathy with your peers with your teachers it's about communication and it's about collaboration leadership and being adaptable and having adaptability skills as things are flexible and changing these are the skill sets that our children need to have and those are the ones that are going to make them the most competitive for scholarships opportunities after school and to be able to present themselves in ways like portfolios and communication exercises presentations to place them a little bit above the rest they might be in competition for in competition with for opportunities beyond high school lastly i've already touched it we've talked about the pmp realities meaning how much money do we have and how many bills do we have related to our facilities the board's been working through that we've reviewed many times
the five-year forecast and the impacts of our decisions and how that impacts the forecast and how we are mindful respectful and trying to protect the taxes of our local residents and so that's a big ticket item for our board of education ensuring that we are stretching that dollar as far as we possibly can we talked about and nobody likes to talk about it but we have talked about possible levee scenarios down the road in relation to all of this and i can't speak on behalf of the board other than to say at this particular point in time i don't think there's a decision on any resource any new resources and i will let the board speak to that but at this particular point in time i can tell you they're very interested and they're looking
at it it's encouraging the many many many meetings that these board members are attending the way that they are interacting with our administrative staff the questions that they're asking the way that they're leaning in and the way that they are trying to set the vision for our school district so those are the things that we are talking about we will continue to consolidate our plans and we will continue to provide um what those plans are going to be ahead of time for our uh our uh community so i probably got a little too long mrs housefield but it's okay you are on a roll know that we have a one-hour meeting every thursday we start at eight and at twelve o'clock mrs housefield said i i really need to get to work scott so um
it's been a pleasure so anyway those are the things that we've talked about thank you thanks scott can i ask a question real quick and i don't know if this is possible it's for you we have some young guests right here who are going to be recognized by the forest hills foundation but it's the very very last item on the agenda and we have got a lot to go to got to we got a lot to get through and bedtimes and things is impossible to amend it so they could go next would you like to make that motion is that all that has to happen um i if if it please the president it's really her decision to would they like to just do public comment take a spot in public comment which is right
now the foundation is the foundation here i think yeah i think stacy is stacy here tonight so stacy's not here but nicole and colleen are going to honor these kids who is what is the the innovation destination imagination teams that wong they're elementary students i'd like them to make a motion to amend the agenda to have the forest hills foundation people come down and do their report first so we don't subject elementary kids to two hours of boring i think this has been quite fun right these are very these are i'm sorry thank you all very much uh yes mrs stewart yes mr bib yes mrs jonas yes mrs hosfeld yes thank you so much i really appreciate that i was worried as well about the kiddos being here late um hi stacy cannot be
here tonight she's actually out of town celebrating her mother's birthday so i'm here in her place um for those of you who don't know me i know a few of you my name is nicole whiting i am the communications coordinator for the forest hills foundation i work closely with stacy and i'm also a parent in the district and also an alum so uh thank you um real quick stacey wanted me to hand out i don't know how many of you guys on the board have seen this um i just wanted to give you a quick overview of the forest hills foundation and i'm going to turn it over to colleen to talk about destination imagination i think there's a slide up here for those of you who may not know the foundation was founded 14
years ago in those 14 years they have raised over 2 million dollars that's gone directly back to the kids uh the mission of the foundation is to cultivate resources and create opportunities to prepare all students of the forest hill school district to be successful um if you guys look at the awareness piece this was passed out at all of like back to school events in the fall and it's always on the website and accessible the three areas where the money goes you can see the three major areas student health and wellness access and innovation and experiential programs and experiential programs leads us into one of the big stem programs that foundation supports which is destination imagination and i'm going to turn it over to colleen burliner who's been instrumental in organizing all of the di
teams so colleen hello everyone i am colleen berliner and i've been the district coordinator for destination imagination since around 2014 when we kicked it off here we've had hundreds of students participate in the program and i think our very first group of kids now are everywhere from the fashion institute of technology in new york to the air force academy so hopefully they got those foundations through di and they've carried it their whole lives this year we had 60 students participate in 11 teams across four or five buildings we had the most at air they had six teams they had two teams qualify for state one team is going one team cannot quite get it coordinated with other activities so the team that is going is team steamers and they are taking five students to the
state tournament we also had two mercer teams qualify we've got one team here shining stars and they are going to the state tournament at the elementary level the other team could not be here tonight and they are the no brainers and they are going on the middle school level both of those teams also won special awards during the day the da vinci award went to the no brainers the da vinci award is something that is provided by the judges for those teams that show exceptional design and engineering in their work and exceptional creativity our shining stars got the renaissance award because they not only taught everybody in the audience something about servo motors and motion control they taught the judges who are engineers something about how servo murderers can work when you don't really have
any idea how they're supposed to work so we're very proud of these teams and i'm going to have actually their team manager danashree come up and talk about some of the things she saw when her kids got together and started work thank you colleen my name is dinashree i am mom of rihan shayada who is in third grade and i got to be the team manager for shining stars the mercer elementary team so when the kids mentioned to me that they were going to choose the engineering challenge now me coming from the medical field i certainly knew that i was going to learn something new with them too so um it was amazing i could see how like how the kids were very intelligent they um first i thought like they the team challenge document
is like a big booklet so i thought when i'm reading it with them i would have to go over it over and over but the kids immediately got it and they um they were so full of like you know great ideas and um imagination and all their creativity i was just amazed by that um we had an amazing group of families parents um who were very supportive uh with a common goal of like child development um and then you know at the time uh the the kids brought all sorts of all their skill sets from extracurricular activities um and integrated all of that into the destination imagination presentation and um the day of the presentation we could see all these like little champions little like team leaders and teaching the judges what um like uh
mortar is and how they came up with these ideas their interaction it was amazing to see their interaction with adults there so um we are very thankful to the forest hills foundation for supporting and giving the students this uh platform um and i think that uh you know it's a great opportunity that they are providing so thank you and thank you colleen especially like you know uh in the first few sessions i was about to like say like oh how do i get out of being a team manager and then she was like oh well hang in there and so i'm glad i i i stuck to it and it was an amazing experience thank you all thank you for letting us go a little ahead of time i really appreciate it okay and next
i've got from our high school level um comp state team that's competing which is our first high school level team i'm very excited about that i've got nora zelen and she's going to talk about what she loves about di and why she's done it i think year after year for a little while now hello i'm nora and i've been doing di since second grade so seven years now and there are three big reasons i keep coming back the first it has taught me so much about how to work with others and i truly credit di with just really helping me know how to collaborate with other people which is obviously a very important skill the second is the pride and joy you get from accomplishing this months-long project i mean we start in october and
regionals is february or march and the fact that it's like that you're with a team especially since i play golf which is a very individual sport to have that experience means a lot and the third is it's so fun um i just the process of planning and then building this big presentation i mean our set this year was a six by five foot set so it's it's huge um and through this process i've learned how to sew a quilt how to sew shirts problem solving skills how to build an electrical circuit and how to create a structure that can support weight so there's just this program gives you so much and it just it means the world to me so thank you to the forest hills foundation for education for continuing to support this program
thank you guys so they will be competing on the state level at the beginning of april and if any of them make it to globals which will be in may i will be back here to update you and celebrate that and i appreciate you guys letting them go early so they don't have to learn about patience and restraint as well as teamwork so thank you very much thanks colleen um if you guys don't mind we're going to wrap up we just have i want to introduce we have our forest hills 5k team here we'll be quick um i'm going to have megan come up first um she's going to talk about sponsorships correct hi i'm megan wolfe i am a parent of two kids at air and i am new to the forest hills 5k
committee i am working with the many different sponsors to create a post-race um party and festival so we have the 5k and then we have a celebration of anderson and forest hills so we have over 61 business partners already and we are it's growing like i literally got two emails sitting here from others so if you guys have any connections you wouldn't know anybody that qr code up there will send you right to the link that you need um because we will have you know we would love to have as many as possible we have um over 74 thousand dollars in commitments from business partners already and we still have two months to raise those funds so our goal is a hundred grand but i think we're gonna maybe get more than that hopefully and
then we'll have we already have 54 confirmed booths at the after party so that's school organizations um mental wellness groups that's businesses um it's going to be really fun we'll even have a fun zone and a mascot race i mean it's just going to be awesome and already we have 569 people registered so if you all register we'll have more so thank you so i'm lauren tischler i am the ambassador chair for the race this is also my first year helping with the race and as the snow fell down this last weekend all i could think about was how healing it was to think about may and warm weather and getting to come together so it's been super fun to watch the registration roll in if you haven't registered please do it's going to be
a blast we're just really excited to get to celebrate and have fun with y'all hi my name is amy heiss i've been a part of this race for a long time and um unfortunately i took over in 2020 and we all know what happened that year we went virtual for two years and the race is just not as much fun when you're running by yourself really if you guys haven't been to the race it is just such an amazing part of our community it's like the one time in our community where all of our schools come together as one for one mission for one purpose just to have fun to be healthy and to support our foundation all the funds this year are going back to mental health resources for our kids so it ties
back to what the board wants to do also and i just think it's such a great event so please if you haven't registered please register soon um i also has anyone registered for the race already you get a prize [Laughter] thank you [Applause] thank you guys next up is public commentary we have six signed up for public commentary tonight first on the list is bill armstrong second up is denise mayer hard to believe it's actually at the right height for me so uh good evening board i just wanted to kind of come up and give out a little bit of information to all the parents administrators everybody out there i went and saw a documentary this past monday it was called whose children are they it was very well done i personally searched and verified
a lot of the information that was given in this documentary and i can tell you it was a hundred percent accurate i've heard people try to say that it's propaganda in no way did i find that to be the case at all you can find information on this documentary at whose children are they dot com they will send out videos to different groups and whatever else that you can see this amazing documentary i implore if you care about kids and where we're going with our education system i implore you to watch it and then research the information that's been given thanks for your time thank you denise mayer and up after that is kevin miziack this is about right for me too which is unusual good evening school board members mr prebbles and guests my

ever evolving drug culture the over scheduling and for some underlying mental health issues especially anxiety and depression when a tragedy occurs in the anderson community we are all decimated everyone says what can we do or we need to do more we've heard you and this is a start i encourage you as parents to sign your children up it's time for teens to speak up and it's time for us to listen we hope teens take advantage of this free event and the flight will be back there on the on the table thank you denise kevin moziak and next up after that is nikki zellen mr mishack if you're not close to the speaker it won't do that i i don't think i'll need much hear me i will speak i tried all right my name is
kevin i tried that and i am very happy to be part of this community all right very happy i love the progress that the community has made i am a supporter of the community and best decision i ever made six years ago when i moved here so let there be no doubt about that i love the direction the new board and the existing board vendor member has taken and i appreciate scott and kyle for taking their time to meet with me on an issue that's very passionate to me right like each of you it's our kids right so i'm going to read you the email i sent to the board last month and i'm going to edit it all right um we celebrate our children's academic achievements as we should we know they will be
our future leaders there's no question about that i'm proud of our district's support of our best and brightest we've seen them all night it's been wonderful i've seen that on many meetings i also congratulate each of you who are here on your own time because in the past we've missed that participation at this board meeting i encourage each of you to speak up on something you're passionate about and to reach out to your administrators right to find out what the solutions are and which why i'm here today last fall we heard a report by staff about the impact of two years of cobit on our experience i don't know i doubt many of you were here for that our our brightest seen here today fared very well right the vast majority the other 60 70
hung off unfortunately there is a significant percentage that did not fare well we have programs in place to eat these students i am personally familiar with the 504 program and now the iep program all right my my wonderful son has adhd i suspect some of you have children or no children have that issue he has been on a 504 at summit since summit elementary four years ago this is his fourth year on 504 he was recently evaluated for an ied ied all right today is the ninth grade answer it has been challenging many of you know that we have discussed that personally and i appreciate your time i really do this district has a unique opportunity that i hope this administration and this board grasp we do great with our best and brightest we are
a well-designed system for our wall car over achievers but there's a segment that's missing thank you mr mushack nikki zellen and next up kristen kalanick [Applause] well it's a little intimidating to follow my daughter um good job i was hoping everybody could just stop what you're doing try sitting up straight place your feet flat on the ground we're going to s-t-o-p s is for stop t take a deep breath just like that good job oh observe any tenseness in your body notice any thoughts or emotions without judgment p proceed s-t-o-p you all just experienced a social and emotional learning lesson it's one of the first ones the character effect from beach acres parenting center shares with teachers every sector seems to have its own acronyms and phrases for 20 years in consumer packaged goods i
was used to soft skills emotional intelligence in fact my favorite duke professor wrote article for the harvard business review advocating that decency is just as important as intelligence that then i move to b jake's parenting center and my heart goes out to you guys i've had five years to get used to some of these phrases that betsy and kelly throw around so beautifully and you've had about five seconds so i thought i'd share what i learned when you hear self-awareness and self-management if a child cannot regulate their emotions gets bogged down in frustration they cannot learn in a meta-analysis that included 270 000 student records it was proven that schools with a formal social and emotional learning program do better academically do better academically and we all care about academics when you hear social awareness
if a child cannot be empathetic or show compassion then bullying happens and fighting is happening and cyber bullying is happening and we all care about bullying and when you hear five sel competencies three i've mentioned and the other two are relationship skills and responsible decision making recognize that having all five of those sel protect our competencies is one protective factor against suicide something we all care about social and emotional learning has been proven to be tied to academics bullying and even suicide three things we all care about it's our first line of defense in supporting the well-being of students and it gives them the emotional intelligence to succeed after graduation so let's all s-t-o-p and we can move forward as a unified positive force for all these kids we love so much thank you thank
you kristin kalanick and then kimberly althoff hi everybody can you hear me okay yes okay so i was really glad to hear scott your perspectives on where the board is headed um actually that's very reassuring considering what i'm about to talk about i would say that where i'm coming from is a place of concern and i would where i'm going to start is with a rumor that was sort of set aside but was recently confirmed three of our board members ran a campaign recently for their position on the forest hills school board around a mission geared totally towards transparency this sunday however following rumors of as i mentioned from my neighbors about secret meetings a neighbor of mine observed behavior by board members that contradicted their stated campaign mission a photograph was taken at the
time the behavior was observed and is now posted to social media documenting the home of two well-known republicans in eagle's watch where cars belonging to several board members and those of republican ward chairs lisa daley and mike niece were parked outside for several hours neighborhood eyewitnesses further report that earlier this year ms jonas and ms housefeld met at this same home and were observed with board-provided strategic material binders in tow under these circumstances the community is left to draw their own conclusions and ask the questions why were they meeting behind closed doors what were they discussing did they discuss cuts to transportation raising the levy teachers and administrative roles being changed or programs like those we saw tonight being cut because they choose not to pass the levy meetings held behind closed doors by any
public official would call into question the integrity of those elected members the integrity of the republican ward chairs they met with and the republican party itself for not explaining to party members the risks that this type of secretive behavior bring to themselves the party and our district that we love the evidence available leads a reasonable observer to assume that these three board members and their handlers may have something to hide that they may be making decisions they don't want anyone to see and perhaps the board members may know that they themselves lack the decision-making ability and critical thinking skills to do the job i certainly hope that's not the case and i will await your public statement to follow thank you [Applause] thank you kristen kalanick next up kimberly oltof good evening everyone um i
had actually something a little bit different prepared to say but in light of kind of that information i wanted to talk about transparency and i want to state that that learning that information is something that specifically angered me and i'm a i'm a really middle of the road person i dismiss rumors i need evidence i need the transparency and the fact that you guys all ran on transparency is ridiculously important to me and i mean ridiculously the the checkbook being able to be able to communicate with the members of this district and give them the information that they need the revamping of the website is also important the my focus lately has been on the levy and you guys have seen me i've been at the meetings um i really want to know what's going
on i think it's important for me as a community member to be able to make informed decisions and i care deeply about this community one because i'm a taxpayer in it but also because my children are personally affected by the things and the decisions that go on in the in the community regardless of whether or not they're by the board but as our community as a whole and the irritation that i'm feeling right now is based on that there has been transparency on some things and it feels like there has not been transparency on other issues and i want to give you the opportunity i want to give everyone the opportunity across the board across our our school district to be the level of transparency that you asked for from the previous board and for
me the concern about the levy is that we we have a lot of information the last presentation was great anybody didn't attend it was wonderful the documents are amazing but not having the discussion publicly and expressing your concerns publicly expressing your ideas publicly puts us at a situation where we are not able to then make our own informed decisions until a decision comes out and not having a decision like make the decision and own the decision it's something that i've been taught i'm assuming that you guys are kind of of the same mindset but talk about it openly for us give us the opportunity to respond to it like we know that our levy coming up is a big deal and um and we would like the community to be able to make the decision
and we do that through voting um we know that loveland has gone through something similar to this and we don't want to end up in the situation that lovelands is in with the number of teachers that they've had to eliminate and the busing issues that they've that they've seen the the issues that we saw with remote learning which i didn't disagree with um we're going to deal with those if we don't have if transportation for example ends up on the on the cutting floor i prefer you act personally if you choose not to act and not to put that levy forward for a vote i think it's it's important for you to share why and your reasoning behind that because we can't we can't make decisions in a vacuum and until we hear the information
until we hear your take on it detailed with information with the facts and the numbers we can't we can't make our own informed decisions um so i'm going to conclude that you guys have an opportunity here i really hope you take it thank you kimberly i appreciate it [Applause] item 9.0 business operations mr record thank you miss hosfelt members of the board we have four items on the in the business operations agenda to say this evening and i'm assuming we are on consent agenda at this point item 9.1 was the bid opening on the district asphalt projects on the 9th we opened up the district the bids ms cropper opened up the bids we found the lowest responsible bid to be from west side paving for a total of 444 thousand 470 dollars and as
the for the community listening in that project will encompass a large portion of the turpin mercer campus and the nagel middle school track item 9.2 is a lease agreement with anderson township to place our antennas on their communication towers the antennas are for bus transportation radio systems that we need and that lease agreement is actually a 20-year lease we're coming off a 20-year lease item number 9.3 is our district insurance every year as just as with homeowners insurance anything you have to renew so we've worked uh very closely with our insurance agent uh through barry insurance and we've come up with the district insurance all the insurance property and casualty insurance not health insurance this will be a renewal to the district of 374 997.33 for the upcoming fiscal year the final item on the
business operations agenda is another insurance item and this is a flood insurance that is on the miami valley christian academy building and the reason why if you see we're working with miami valley christian and doing insurance we have auxiliary products that the state requires us to have in private facilities to serve students and that is to insurance on those products and it's in a flood plain so we have to carry flood insurance and the flood insurance for this upcoming fiscal year will be two thousand nine hundred and thirty six dollars so at this point the superintendent and treasurer recommend that the board accept items nine point one through 9.4 is part of the consent agenda are there any questions i have a quick question on the alternates there are listed on there like the alter
the last alternate was nagel when it was crossed off i thought i didn't think they were doing nagel if you look at it they're all like crossed off i'll have to look at that documentation but in the base bid okay uh the nagel track is part of the base bid uh you could have possibly seen an old document okay because at one point in time nagel was going to be an alternate but then we felt it was more prudent to make ensure we could get the track fixed and up to speed so we made a part of the base bid mr bibb was that in uh graphic form or was that in text that you that you was a text there was there was a list of there's like nine alternates and it was the
last alternate okay was crossed off so i i thought they were just doing the terp and they weren't touching no thank you but yeah i i will double check that diaper tip but we are definitely the angle track is part of the base bit fair enough and that's in the document this evening yes okay yes any other questions okay thank you for your time watch the chords no one left [Laughter] i'm keeping track all right uh it's great to see everyone this evening um and uh hr report this evening is pretty straightforward i'm going to start out with retirements as always in item a we starting with our certified and classified retirements there are four before the board for uh approval this evening and and obviously every time we've got folks leaving retiring from our
district it's uh you know we could spend a lot of time up here speaking but we know that the buildings will be doing that and celebrating these great individuals collectively 98 years in the district so kudos to sheryl kemper chris wolfer tonya herron on the certified side and mark frankhauser turpin's head custodian on the classified side item b resignation we have a handful of resignations and again i would just draw your attention and would need to i wouldn't be able to say [Music] i wouldn't be able to leave without mentioning that john vandermeer and wishing him a good luck moving on to deer park he's taken a position as the deer park junior high senior high principal and we wish him all the best as he moves forward he's been in the district 15 years
he served as assistant principal principal here athletic director and we wish him all the best in the years ahead item c we do have a couple leaves for the board this evening those are one year leaves of absence with the intent to return after one year item d does include personnel items e through k item e is a change of assignment salary i believe the board is informed that they're we're experiencing or anticipating an increase it's highly likely and so we wanted to make sure that this gets before the board so we can remain in compliance um with our preschool numbers um on the special education side so uh an increase of about a half in terms of the is on the certified side and another half on the parasite and then there is last
month you may remember there was before the board a retro payment for a teacher this is it caused us to look back at making sure that we were appropriately compensating folks coming out of the ou fellows program has nothing to do with me but it's a really cool program for undergrads where they get an opportunity to extend their four year of undergrad by um being placed in a full-time teaching position that um is i think they award two fellows each year and we happen to have two of them so i think it's probably unlikely that there will be others but it's pretty pretty good stuff item f are appointments we have one replacing a retirement and transportation so excited to see james coming on board there as a driver and we have a number of
folks in the classified side that are coming off of the probationary status item g are the special services appointment and there are quite a few here most of the work beyond the contract are special education related making sure that we're providing opportunities for for kids to participate in a number of different opportunities in the after school whether it's a dance or things like that that we want to make sure that they've got appropriate accommodations as per their ieps and needs auditorium tech they're listed lifeguard and camp kern and there's a lot of folks listed under the camp kern piece there we're all very excited to bring camp kern back hoping for great weather and a great experience for these kids so they can kind of bond a bit going into that that opportunity in um
and nagle so we have 2022 elementary school and both elementary summer school and secondary summer school teachers working with students in summer school this this summer so those are before the board and i also see a few support staff that are listed there item h we've got a long list of coaches spring season is upon us excited to see all the baseball stuff out there and track and we've got the weather today and it's a little balmy in here so it's good stuff item i student teachers we've always got those coming through so there are four for the board's approval this evening and item j are volunteers a few substitutes both in the classified and the certified side i'm sorry just classified side admin assistants aides bus drivers cooks custodians maintenance workers and paraprofessionals and
since the regular board meeting of february 16th of last last month our staffing fte is at 800.21 that reflects the 0.88 increase in the ftes the the 0.5 is and the 0.44 para for preschool for preschool yep questions all right superintendent recommends the board approved personnel items in the consent agenda thanks rob thank you [Music] i went this way so i wouldn't trip so all right student services student programs has four items for you to review tonight 11.1 the administration of turpin high school is requesting your approval of an international exchange student to nyapad from thailand for the 22-23 school year a roast a host family has been selected for her and she will be sponsored by the council on international educational exchange all information that is required is outlined in our board policy 5114
and that's related to international exchange has been received for this student for item 11.2 we have and i'm actually going to try to put 11.2 and 11.3 together this is an agreement two agreements that support the placement per ieps of two of our special education students who are being placed at ohio valley voices which is a specialized program for students with significant hearing impairments these two students are newly enrolled for the 21-22 school year year the contracts for the school year will continue and as each year they will be represented to you if they continue in these placements the two costs that are presented for each of these items have been prorated based on the enrollment date that they came in and were placed per their ieps item 11.4 is an overnight uh trip request
the administration of turpin high school is requesting permission for 14 varsity softball students and three chaperones to travel to orlando florida during our spring break april 9th through 13th 2022 they're participating in the ksa tournament events there is a 1179 dollar student cost i will add here that fundraisers are being conducted to offset these costs as well as the boosters will also support if necessary student families will provide their own transportation for their their children to the destination and ksa will provide transportation to the tournament events the superintendent is recommending approval by anders for items 11.1 to 11.4 as proposed in these items thank you betsy item 12.0 treasures report the treasurer's report the first item is 11.1 a and that begins with a long list of donors whose gifts totaled just over 31 000
over the last month and as always we are appreciate of these appreciative of these gifts that supplement our programs the donors do receive a thank you from the board of education once the donations are approved moving on to item 12.1 b this is the cash activity statement which presents all revenue expenditures in all of the district's funds from the beginning of our fiscal year july 1st through february 28 2022 item c presents the general fund our five-year forecast fund receipts for the month and the fiscal year to date ended february 28th and as you can see february as typical was a high cash flow month we continue to receive what made that a high cash flow month was the continuing to receive advances against our spring real estate collections items d and e present expenditures
in the general fund for the month in the fiscal year to date as you hear me say every month expenditures in the general fund are very stable throughout the year so we would expect approximately 1 12 of our appropriations to be spent every month so with 67 percent of our fiscal year complete at the end of february we have spent 65 percent of our appropriations with another 4.5 commitment for future expenditures so as you can see spending is tracking where we would expect at this point in our fiscal year the february 28th bank reconciliations and investments are presented in agenda items 12.1 f and g and appropriation adjustment details are presented in agenda item 12.1 h appropriations are adjusted throughout the year as the actual revenue becomes more apparent and to clarify our estimates at
the beginning of the year i respectfully recommend that the board approve items 12.1 through 12.1 h as part of the consent motion containing items 91 through 12.1 h i make a motion to approve the consent agenda a second mrs jonas yes mrs stewart yes mr bibb yes dr rasmussen yes mrs hospital yes item 13.0 board discussion anybody have any comments on our fuel right now what are we over budget because of the increase in fuel prices is it um go ahead it was 150 or you said it was 200 last wednesday is that about right yeah and to complete the year we we're going to be somewhere between 150 and 200 depending upon how the fuel either moves one way or the other we're kind of happy this week it went from 409 to 406.
but that's better than 415. and then so so i guess everybody understands our permanent improvement fund is 750 000 a year correct half of that half of that right now is going to pay back the site improvements in anderson until 2026 so that leaves us 300 thousand dollars correct and out of that we want to purchase three buses a year uh the buses sorry mr the buses are actually in the general fund so then that leaves us 300 000 left for facilities maintenance for an entire year for 11 buildings okay and next year's approximate is i think we was at 800 000. okay of those 800 000 which absolutely have to get done oh if we uh have the roofs are one of our biggest concerns we do have some more asphalt projects in there
i believe we have two roofs in that project that are taking up to would be the largest john i know you're working on that spreadsheet and pulling all this information together and you're working really hard on that i really appreciate all the work you're putting into this um actually were we going to see some options from rob i thought where is rob uh are you oh what type what type of what type of options are you speaking of um at the work session we talked about how there potentially might be 4.8 million dollars of cuts we would have to make and i thought i saw some i realized that was a quick turnaround so if that's not something i just i wasn't totally clear on whether or not we were going to be able to
discuss that or not i think the 4.8 million is not something that um that we were talking through really thinking about whether we were going for a levy in this year or next year and if so which village are we looking at so the 4.8 is kind of if there's no levy in either year kind of a scenario um we're kind of in that spot where we're waiting for a little bit of the direction on what the thoughts are in terms of millage when does the board need to make that decision scott or rob well yeah it depends on which year you go because the um first resolution needs to be passed 100 days prior to the election and that is a resolution of necessity and that goes to the county auditor reviews our calculations
on millage and verifies that we have the correct revenues that would be raised by that millage and like i say 100 days out from the next even possible election would be this upcoming november 8th and 100 days out from that would be july 29th which is a friday and then once we get that resolution back from the county auditor verifying our calculations the resolution of necessity um the board would then need to pass another resolution by august 10th and i believe that's a wednesday but i would need to have it to the board of elections by august 10th and that would be a resolution to proceed with putting the levy on the ballot so those are the dates for the next election that would be possible but again for all elections it's 100 days prior
for the first resolution and 90 days prior for the second resolution and it's i i need to have them to the respective office by close of business that day so realistically that's the deadline like the absolute deadline we can't come to you on july 29th and say oh by the way we want to do this so in a perfect world if you all could choose what when do you want this board to decide is i guess and perhaps that's not a fair question because this board should be telling you whether or not we're going to pursue this or not because you're going to have to make plans to make deep cuts that's the truth i'm seeing some really sad faces and head nods and that so that's really that's the reality that we're dealing with
here is that you all need a decision very quickly so that you can prepare for fall 2022 and we're kind of at a standstill wednesday's work session last week was a lot of information to process i'm not sure how soon we want to discuss this whether it's right now or next at the next meeting or a special meeting whatever but it sounds like we need to have that conversation very quickly based on those comments if i may i would suggest that that conversation not happen at this meeting because i do not believe that my administrative team is prepared to go into depth about the questions that are being asked and my administrative team works hard and i do not want them to be in a situation where something they say is an accurate figure and
that places the board in a very difficult position so if we're going to have a work session on finance i suggest that we have a work session on finance and we get we come to the conclusions that you're asking about this evening i think that is a an unbelievably good idea i don't think that the team is prepared for this conversation right now not that we have not been researching and looking and doing things as we do every year at this time when we're looking at staffing and budgets and preparing for the upcoming year but if that's the direction that we're going to go i i highly recommend that we have a work session on this topic where all the materials can be presented where everyone can see them and the board can facilitate that
discussion as it as it believes is appropriate that that would be my recommendation at i was going to add 8 40. i was going to ask is that is that typically how it goes because i was not on the board when the last one was discussed so i honestly don't know exactly how that conversation goes it's a great conversation it's a great question and it is it is important question as in the role that i have right now recognizing the and i say this respectfully the amount of volume of information coming towards our board of education they need time to be able to review these things this is year 36 for me in finance in the state of ohio with schools it is not an easy puzzle it is hard to understand the nuances of
finance and budgets across the state of ohio where monies are coming from how monies are available to be used and the impact of all that on our local taxpayers so yes to the discussion i would respectfully ask that we do that in a work session where we can really lay that out and the board is totally prepared and the administrative team is bringing the reports and the documents with specific numbers and information that will move that agenda along to whatever vision the board has for finances and the operation of the district i need more data so that works for me yeah i think we left wednesday with sort of a you know item list for scott to go back to his team to dig into and to provide us stuff so we really don't have
anything that we can even talk about because we don't have any material we don't have any suggestions we don't have we don't really don't have anything right now we're all still in this learning and questioning and just kind of discovery and [Music] you know these are some very big decisions that we all need to know a lot of information so it'll be just a working relationship back and forth so and of course we can't you know once a month we meet and you know i know time does go by fast we're doing the best that we can do right that's completely fair and i wasn't sure how it was done before because i wasn't on the board um i think my one like plea to the board is that we try to have that discussion
relatively soon rather than later and that is stemming from the conversation that came out of our human resources committee meeting where that involved katie myself scott rob and their team and just a need to fill some important spots for the upcoming year and kind of what that means as part of our larger discussion so we we just can't keep kicking the can down the road like at some point we gotta dig our heels in and you know sort through it before it is too late i guess is all so i had like five or six questions in regards to a levy and kind of thinking about how we want to move forward so um i think if it's not a topic that's wanting to be discussed tonight i think that i would like to see
a meeting to discuss all of this before our next board meeting um because i had a lot of questions and thoughts on this and you know i would like you guys to be prepared to answer those questions so we're not just staring at each other but yeah i had a half a page of notes in regard to this for this evening so i would like to move forward quickly with discussing that so i don't know anybody else have any discussion topics or any comments one more from last week we talked about child focus and there's a wait period do we ever find out what the wait period is okay so do we know how many are waiting okay thank you anything else i have a few items actually more so than that so i'm going
to throw out some stuff that i was going to talk about with the levy anyway just so that everybody can kind of think about this stuff before the next meeting so i was looking at based on what we saw last week i think a 7.8 million dollar levy is absolutely astronomical and like kind of crazy and i don't know that that's something that anybody would be up for but i think that was uh i know it's a mill no it wasn't million it was a mill sorry milk it's okay just my bad that's why i'm saying terminology yeah okay right make a note of that um i'm i'm concerned that 4.7 doesn't get us very far especially if we put it off another year and even with that we needed to make cuts and i
would like to see exactly what cuts would need to be made if that was something i know i think i had an email that said it would impact the classroom and you know that's not something that i think any of us want to the road we want to go down so i'd like to look at other options on top of that like what other things can we do to alleviate this every two or three years is there anything we can do combining facilities or um you know adding a sports facility that maybe brings in revenue i have a lot of questions i would love to sit down and all of us throw some ideas around and see if there's anything we can come up with and kind of move forward to to get us on
a better trajectory and i know that if i recall correctly it costs more to put a levy on in may is that correct they divide the cost of the election amongst the people who are on the ballot so there's typically less on the ballot in may so that does make typically more expensive and so that's i mean that's something that we need to think about as well if you put something on the ballot for may you have lower voter turnout if you put it on in november higher voter turnout cost i just don't feel like we have a lot of time to make a decision especially if we want to put something on this year and so um just some stuff to think about and you know i'd like to see a more itemized list
of what cuts because i'd like to know what kind of impact this would have if that's a route that's taken so katie when you say combined facilities do you mean shut down a school and merge them i am just very open to hearing ideas across the board in any aspect of that like i know we're sharing a pool right now where you know the the track i know it's being but what kind of options do we have long term and what's you know more viable for our district i just would like to hear more about all of that stuff so one thing we learned was like the harsh reality is that something like 85 percent of our budget is that right is faculty and staff so i mean we we don't have to pretend that
that wouldn't hurt that is something that's going to have to be on the table if we're not going to put something on in november or the following year as well so i mean that's just the reality maybe we don't know specifics yet but that was pretty much spelled out for us last week at the work session um [Music] and in you know the spirit of transparency for those that weren't there i mean that's what we were told um again specific numbers no but the reality being that we're looking at people when we look at people that means class sizes that mean i mean it's all interrelated um but just you know say what it is is essentially what i'm trying to say i just know we have a lot of buildings here as well that
have a lot of leaky roofs a lot of facilities to maintain and so i would just like to see what the best practice would be moving forward long term for sustainability in this district by that do you mean like i just want to understand and also so they understand and know what to present do you want to see like a model for let's say five elementary schools as opposed to six a model with five elementary schools and one high school i guess i'm just trying to conceptualize what what it is you mean by that just well so they know what to tell us all right this is what a large high school is going to look like or six i know that was something that was talked about like what 10 years ago i think
maybe it was back in like 2014 they they had talked about combining stuff i know the community as a whole did not like the idea of one high school but um i don't know if anybody's feelings changed with that with going with these levees and i mean these are substantial levees that we're looking at so what direction do we want to go as i just i would like to see all options i'd like to see options for what cuts would need to be made i'd like to see options for what if we did combine down into would you say four elementary schools or five elementary schools i'd like to see what both of those look like i'd like to see what it's like for one high school or two high schools i want to see
as many options as possible so i feel like i am making the best decision going forward for our district and moving forward so i am open to hearing all options that i feel like i can make the best decision for taxpayers our community our schools our students everyone so so since we're having our work session [Laughter] sorry that's quite all right that that was it's tense hence i i do use sarcasm and so i i i mean no no disrespect um this there's there's um four years of my life the last four years i've been traveling to columbus to try to work on school funding in the state of ohio there still is not a mechanism within the funding system that deals with inflation the reason i bring this up is that i believe this
is a two-pronged circumstance everyone i believe in the room understands the need to project out you have a young family that's getting larger your van your car is going to have to get bigger you need to plan ahead for those things but in the moment we're dealing with rising prices in gas and other things that we do so there's a two-prong thing happening the inflationary component is happening to all of us in our lives and that happens to schools on a three-four-year basis it is been proven unconstitutional or it has been um adjudicated as unconstitutional but therein lies the issue we are dealing with gas prices we cannot manage that because it's happening to us with an inflationary thing so schools can only raise or can only collect what they agree with the community they
agree on an amount and that stays that way and what happens is people see that the school begins to deficit spend because as inflation goes up those lines cross and so at some point your community begins to say you're inefficient you're fiscally irresponsible every single school in ohio and this is probably atlanta's discussion not mine collects more money at the beginning of a levy cycle than they're going to spend knowing that over time those lines are going to cross they always have and if the funding stays the way it is they always will the second prong of this is how do we as a school district fundamentally maintain sustainability to protect the interest of our taxpayers dollars and that is six seven eight year fiscal planning about all of the things that bob has brought
up that katie is bringing up about how do you prepare for these things knowing that you're going to have that inflationary thing happening so we've got to think about sustainability in our in our school district so for me in this discussion since it is happening we need to consider stabilizing the current situation that we have because it is in our face and we need to use time while we stabilize to be able to redirect some of the larger things that you're talking about it's two years to build a school it's two and a half to three years to really get a community working around things like district changing you know redistricting potentially doing things like that so those are the types of things this board has been talking about they are being mindful about that
six seven eight nine year place in time that's what they've been looking at all the while all of these other things are coming at them in rapid fire so again it's a lot stabilizing and then preparing for that longer journey is is the answer i believe to this two-pronged puzzle and that is at the board's discretion based upon the review of the materials in work sessions like leslie and katie and others are asking for so that you can clearly have a sense of all of that the last thing i will say on this many people have asked me whether it's my mom or my family or anyone in this room anything we cut will impact students anything we cut will impact students i am not trying to position anyone or try to leverage anyone there
is no question in my mind after 35 years in this business if you eliminate something somewhere it's going to change the way things are provided whether it's service or education or lights or technology or response time or website nothing because it's all about kids it's all about kids it's not about politics and all that stuff we seem to talk about a lot in this room it's kids i'm done no thanks scott i have one last thing unrelated to this more related to the public comments i heard the rumor that was addressed as well and i went straight to mr bibb to ask him if there was in fact a meeting and he told me in email no because a quorum is illegal and i wrote him back and said correct i don't know about a
photo i don't know about any of that but that's something that i would love as a board member katie i don't know if you would as well like to know if there is something happening that we should be aware of and perhaps right this moment is not the time um but i do want to go on record as saying that i did hear that as well i was concerned and i went straight to one person who was allegedly there and asked and his answer to me was no that that did not happen so that's it okay anybody else you good i have a couple other things i'd like to talk about that didn't pertain to that but um i would like to talk about some of the bullying and like mental health issues in our
schools i met with john eckert and talked to him a little bit about some of our safety issues we had a meeting i've toured a couple schools and talk to some of the principals and i know that there's been a huge shift in the last couple years with mental health and and you know children fighting more in school and having a hard time regulating their emotions and and uh their bodies i guess um and so i'd like to talk about maybe are there any policy updates that we need to make i know this isn't an issue just in forest hills this is an issue um across the board like as far as like society goes but i don't know if there's anything that we can do to help kids in schools that to um i
don't know like maybe like limiting phones in classrooms or chromebook usage or something so that they're engaging more together and building that community and camaraderie amongst each other um i don't know if basically any kind of shift in in how we deal with these situations to to help kids in the classroom so that we can focus more on learning instead of de-escalating situations i don't know if anybody has any thoughts on any of that no i mean i agree with you you're right right yeah i think we're working on that katie i don't know if maybe the conversation with maybe kim or you know just kind of talking through some of your thoughts might help for people i just didn't know if you guys had any thoughts or ways in which we can implement some
of this i know um since we've talked a lot about social emotional learning i know that there's a lot of aspects of that that plays into this i know there's some concerns about that as well like i personally pulled up the state standards and read the 33 pages of the state standards for social emotional learning and i would say the majority of that i think would help kids identify how they're feeling and better ways to work through those emotions so that they are not necessarily acting out but i know that the last two years has been hard on them as far as you know being in and out of the classroom less consistency that kind of stuff um i don't know um i was hoping to have more of a discussion on on how to
move forward with these things so that we can create a safer more productive environment in the classroom i know you and i emailed and talked about maybe meeting with kelly and i think that was just yesterday so we haven't fully gotten that in place yet but these are just thoughts of mine and concerns of mine and i think just as a community i i feel like sometimes i've said this before um i think it's important that we sit down and talk with one another that we actually listen to each other and hear each other because i think a lot of times people get defensive and i think that this divide just makes things worse instead of actually listening to hear each other talk instead of listening to respond i would think it would be beneficial
i know every time i sit down and talk to people we have a lot more in common than we think we do so i'd like to see that happen and i think that us as a board needs to be successful and talk with one another and communicate in and get the ball rolling and stuff because i think that's the only way we're going to be successful for our students in our community and our schools so that's all i have that was all my books thank you no other comments we'll move on to the reports to the board of education 14.1 finance committee report we had a meeting on february the 24th and just a brief overview we went over the general fund five-year forecast budgeting and district benchmarks i mean we talked about a lot
of that to hear today when we were even discussing levy or cut options so it's pretty much just an information session for us so that's all i have for finance 14.2 human resources we met on february 23rd with rob and his team and very much an information session i would say i think even for me two years in as well is very informative we kind of went through the structure of how you know the positions work within the organization and the big takeaway for me is that we need to get some positions approved so that they can do the hiring for the fall semester which in my job we have to have the schedule and that means people hired and everything by january for the september start and i as you were talking in that
meeting i was thinking about like gosh it's it's kind of i still can't get over how fast we have to do these things um so that's something that needs to be that something that needs to happen quickly you know we saw the vacancies there so i'm sure rob will tell us when and hopefully we can get that done so okay 14.3 teaching and learning committee we have not met yet but we are working on getting together um in the next couple weeks 14.4 technology and facilities well we met on march 3rd and discussed the rfp from the turpin and nagel um we updated on the pool i just thought maybe we get a presentation at some point on the pool so everybody knows where we're at but for the most part about the same price
as where we were with everybody else just a better warranty so to speak but those prices are two years two three years old at this point so those are even be higher um we talked about the fuel the fuel price and that's badly all we talked about i think i don't think i missed anything it did 14.5 legislative liaison there was no report coming from the liaison group linda there are some big bills that are coming through um i was actually i got miss i was actually going to mention them in the board discussion but they are important for example i mean in fact i will send this to you but house bill 322 house bill 327 those are coming down the pipe there's been no vote on those yet but those are related to
teaching divisive concepts so i think we all know what that means and in relation to that and something that we as a district need to be aware about is that the college board is now yanking ap courses from districts and states that push forth this type of legislation so that is very significant and we need to keep our eye on that bill um as i said it's 322 and 327. so not a not a vote yet there's been five committee hearings those are things that we need to watch because since i've ran for school board all i've heard about is the ap classes and and i you know honestly in higher ed i understand the importance of that so and that is not something this board can control that's a legislative thing if that comes
down then we're going to have to we're going to have to deal with that frankly so i really want the community to be aware of that there are several other big ones but for time's sake i'm not going to go into that but i will forward this to you thanks leslie i appreciate that i sent it earlier to you no that's okay that's all right 14.6 the forest hills teacher association on behalf of the forest hills teacher association and our 500 teachers good evening president housefield and the members of the board it's my first time to get to be in front of all you this year so i appreciate the moment here as president of the largest ohio education association in southwest ohio we're very proud of our 54-year relationship with the forest hills school
district the association tonight's going to focus on three basic areas which one is state legislation which we've heard a little bit about two working relations with the district and three community outreach starting with our state legislation uh one that i know all of you are very aware of and is one is dear to heart for any public education is the backpack bill and house bill 290. the second one the electoral maps and revised areas of redistricting as far as elections and we're keeping an eye on that one and of course the most important one right now is the daylight savings there are people still alive this is good those are all items the one in particular with the backpack bill and i want to thank our we have a delegate that works for the association
his name's chris preston he's a middle school teacher here and his job is to kind of keep a liaison effort between the association and the state work that we keep an eye on to help teachers get involved we're really right now another piece of area that we're very concerned with as any one of us that are members of the education world is the ohio state teachers retirement system and we're keeping some real interesting aspects within that one as well and chris does a good job of keeping that together we also know right now here in our own arena in the association is we have our fhta elections coming this spring and that's where all of our members have the opportunity we are on two-year terms with our executive team and those options and those opportunities
are available the second one is the working relations of the forest hill school district in the association and just kind of keep that in perspective and one of the things that makes our school great is that opportunity for the teachers and the administration to work collectively with the board to make sure that we're moving in correct direction as tonight i listened to a lot of the discussion around levies and so forth those discussions become very important as we move together for the benefit of our students and the employees of the school district one of the most important ones that you've heard probably through the years many of you been here is i talk about our building advisory committees and our district advisory committee i want to make sure tonight i explained that and i just
kind of did a quick number we have 64 administrators and teachers that work monthly in each building throughout the district to come together to work at a building level to try to keep you know issues or concerns and work together to make sure those things are solved and then the district advisory committee which is made up of the four association members myself chris preston vice president mike roberts and our secretary gail garza comes together with mr prebbles assistant superintendent kim pence elena cropper treasurer and our director of human resources rob fellowes and that group's work is really impactful it helps us solve things it helps us move things in the right direction and we need a week from actually i think the 20 so we meet a week after this so if there's discussions that
are happening we have the opportunity to all work together one of the biggest aspects and i'm going to steal atlantis thunder i don't think she mentioned it tonight is we've worked together we have a health committee uh that i know doug baker is here as well and one of the biggest things that's come out of that i'm very excited about so we had the opportunity to work together to make some changes in our dental insurance which is a cost savings to the district as well it's going to provide a lot better service to all of our employees so those are the kinds of things that we're able to do that are impactful to all members in our school community lastly tonight is our community member outreach and i think tonight you had the opportunity here
that i know doug's here so i'm going to give him some kudos the who day for hot meal really was a great opportunity during a time in our community that we were able to come together and i definitely want to make sure i didn't have the chance to do this a little bit sooner but i want to thank croswell bosses and a nice little company named showbird usa who's dear to my heart uh the president of showbird usa is joe lauver who felt quite compelled to get me the interest level to do something nice and those companies both came together to help be our corporate sponsors and i want to make sure i tell you that just because it's good to see that our school community is broader than just anderson township we also have
our celebration we've been doing with all of our new members here recently as well as we'll be providing training and teamwork uh things for them in the upcoming weeks and as well as our teacher leaders in our own uh organization are helping with the forest hills 5k and helping our students get those opportunities to participate with that i think i'm under my three minutes john ecker any questions no no thank you thanks donna all right 15.0 is i believe we're having an executive session this evening pursuant to high revised code section 121.22g1 i hereby move the board board adjourned executive session for the purpose of appointment employment dismissal discipline promotion demotion and compensation of a public employee or official second i think so mr bib yes mrs stewart yes mrs jonas yes dr rasmussen yes
