005five students from our high schools who have earned perfect scores on the a.c.t so i'd like to ask mr fellowes and also mr spencer to please come to the podium and when i read the students names i would like to make sure that we give them the appropriate certificate of commendation and this is a great opportunity and so congratulations to all the students involved first from turpin high school lauren ferguson [Applause] also from turpin high school brooke heiss and jonathan lee from anderson high school anna mcclellan [Applause] and also from anderson high school samuel tilford i recommend the board commend these students for their achievement and distinction and that a certificate of commendation be presented to them like to congratulate and recognize them again for perfect 36 on the a.c.t congratulations everyone [Applause] i'd like
006to make a motion to commend these students for their achievement and distinction and that a certificate of commendation be presented to them i'll second the motion ms cropper mrs meyer yes mrs taylor yes miss choice yes dr rasmussen yes dr heiss yes congratulations [Applause] and for those wondering she gets her smarts from her mother now this is another special time of year that we get to uh recognize and honor our volunteers our district is incredibly strong and volunteers uh and they they truly help make the district everything that it is it's always hard to pick out the top volunteers because we have so many uh but we had each building do that and we'll honor them now so mr prebbles i think you said it all uh dr heist but i also would like to
007congratulate the individuals who we are going to honor this evening this has been a very uh interesting very difficult year for all us all of us a very challenging year and the people that we are going to honor tonight have been there with us since day one they've provided the type of support type of appreciation for education and for the operation of the school district they've offered assistance to students to staff to administration and we are forever in your debt and we appreciate that again thank you very much and at this particular time it is my pleasure to introduce mr fellows who will be speaking about the anderson high school volunteer that we are going to commend sorry thank you first would be tom terciano good evening everyone and thank you tom it is my
008great honor to stand before the forest hills board of education my colleagues and our community in recognizing tom torchiano as anderson high school's outstanding volunteer of the year i cannot i can honestly not say enough good things about tom and all that he has done for our school our district and our community tom currently serves as the vice president of the anderson parks district and is finishing up his fourth year as the president of the anderson high school athletic booster organization he has volunteered since 2015 with the anderson boosters and in that time among other things he led a capital campaign that raised two hundred thousand dollars in six short months to pay for state-of-the-art weight room equipment for our student athletes as well as our p e students at anderson most recently tom has
009volunteered this year announcing games for football soccer girls basketball lacrosse and baseball he's also spent significant time and energy this year helping us raise nearly 300 thousand dollars a large portion of which will be directed toward the purchasing of new uniforms for our student athletes as part of our mascot transition at anderson if you've ever worked alongside tom on anything school related you will have undoubtedly heard him say and repeat the phrase it's for the kids tom doesn't allow adult issues to permeate his focus on how to best support our kids throughout his years as anderson athletic booster president there have been numerous opportunities to engage in a whole host of different initiatives when his board meets to discuss these items however particularly when it comes to items around how to raise money and how
010to spend money the lens through which he encourages his team to view these decisions is this how will this initiative improve opportunities for our student athletes on the field of play no matter how great an idea may sound if it won't directly and positively impact our kids on the field of the play the idea will most almost immediately be disregarded this kid-centered approach is what makes tom an incredible leader and a powerful force for good at anderson high school on behalf of the students staff and parents of anderson high school thank you tom for all that you have done and will continue to do for each of us we are better because of you thank you next mr spencer will introduce amy fontaine you can tell amy's so excited about being standing here you know
011often we talk about how driven and engaged our students are and how great and passionate our staff is across the district and those things there make our district great but when we look at individuals like amy and all the volunteers here that are today and the volunteers across the district these are the individuals that make our district special i mean i mean that wholeheartedly it's an honor for me to recognize amy fontaine as turpin's volunteer of the year amy has been a pto board member for four years and has given so much back to turpin she is always willing to help with volunteering in the school organizing events and food for ths football and recognition of our staff amy implemented a staff appreciation plan for turpin with themes organized gift card raffles and fed our
012staff lunches and treats all along the way last week she even turned earth day as an opportunity to take advantage of showing appreciation to our staff amy's efforts have been recognized and much appreciated by our staff she is so selfless thoughtful smart and endearing turpin high school and especially me thank you amy for your time your effort your dedication and all of your creativity [Applause] congratulations eagle middle school so i am so excited to announce that nagel's volunteer of the year is miss tracy huebner so come on up tracy there's many many many things i could say about tracy but i will say um we have just been so lucky so lucky to have her as our pto president for these last two years tracy's gone above and beyond in her role and outside of
013her role she is truly selfless giving so much of her time and energy to nagel's students staff and our families she works in the soar store when we could finally have her to come in she works in the soar store so that students can redeem their credits and get something as as a reward over the course of the last after when we shut down and we cleaned out all of the lockers all of the extra supplies that people didn't pick up tracy took those home over the summer and put them into nice bundles that then we could use to give to kiddos this year that needed it um tracy and i got in the car well not in the car together but with our masks on and drove last year during shutdown to deliver the
014friend of children awards tracy um she when it comes to staff appreciation she understands how much our staff gives and she wants to be sure that they are celebrated um she works with the team to to ask what it is that they want and then she makes sure that we have that and a whole lot more we've been spoiled we've been spoiled with tracy we've been spoiled with our pto and this year i'm super excited to announce that we just actually like signed the dotted line for a digital sign that we're going to get out front and that is with the help of our pto so tracy is smart she's organized she's flexible you just give her an idea she's just going to run with it take care of it or sometimes she'll even just
015delegate it to the right person which is what a good leader does you know you just ask her for anything and she makes it happen so when we were shut down last year and we couldn't have pto meetings in person we learned how to zoom together we learned how to google meet together and we found that it works really well but what i love about working with tracy is that i know i can trust her i know that she's going to give me honest and valuable feedback she'll say what's going well she'll say what's not going so well she speaks up and she not only looks out for nagel students but she looks out for the best interest of everybody in forest hills and the anderson community so the only thing that i don't like
016is that i only get her for two years so rob you're very lucky to have miss huebner coming your way and tracy i just want to say thank you for everything air elementary hi everyone i'm heather holly principal at air elementary and this is joy o'brien assistant principal at air elementary and we are here to honor and recognize becky fugate becky is our recipient here tonight becky has worked and served air over the past seven years most recently she's been our pta president for the past two years becky has given so much time to our school and our community and just done so many things to serve our staff and our students during during this time becky does prefer to work behind the scenes so this is not um her thing but she does fabulous
017behind the scenes and does so many really good things for our kids so joyce is going to tell us about those so becky has led many things at air and some of those events include grand night and our air festival parent night out winter wonderland global adventure day and our back to school bash as well as multiple walk-a-thons and so much more we ask one special falcon lauren who happens to be her daughter what all this volunteer work meant to her as she watches her mom do so much for air and her response was everything she did to help our school meant a lot to me even if it wasn't for my grade lauren is awesome um lauren also shared that if she had to pick just a few things she's most thankful for her
018mom as in the work she's done with global adventure day and the walkathons but most recently becky she enjoyed the ice cream truck showing up the other day and also the pizza party that they most recently had in the sixth grade thank you becky for everything you have done for our students our staff our school community we are forever grateful thank you maddox elementary all right i'm heather milligan the assistant principal at maddox and i'm here to honor kim winiki for the maddox volunteer this year so in my three years at maddox i've gotten to work closely with kim but i hear her entire four years there she has been very involved i was trying to think of a cute a few key words to describe her i came up with involved an advocate and
019a problem solver and kim displays those qualities across her roles as a parent pto leader and just as a community member at large so as a parent of multiple students at maddox she takes interest and is involved in all aspects of their education she really sees home and school as a true partnership and is always willing to problem solve and communicate on different levels as a pto leader i will bargain that maybe she does the best of staff appreciation despite what some other people have said even virtual raffles home videos she's done it all for us even this year we weren't virtual but we couldn't be in the school and she did amazing things also organizing room reps party activities that are always tied back to students learning about how to give back to maddox
020and the community as a community member kim stays focused on happenings in the school in our district and in our community she's always looking ways to help support and making our school best for all students for example when the district first shared visioning and initiatives around our care and diversity work kim was interested in partnering she didn't just say what can i do or i'm interested she actually created a proposal that partnered pto restructuring and our school-based care team to create awareness and exposure for all students so we are very thankful for kim's commitment creativity and excitement for not only her own children's education but all of medics thank you sherwood elementary good evening board and all of our distinguished guests before we start to i just like to say uh i know we have
021a couple parents sherwood parents who are also volunteers and i heard when i heard tracy's name for nagel i thought she's at sherwood every day too so i don't know i don't know how she's at both buildings all the time but pretty impressive um and also i just wanted to say one thing too for our before i get started for all the parents for all the students out there as a parent in forest hills my heart was swelling up really big when i heard your accomplishment so that's awesome so very proud of you all tonight i would like to introduce sherwood's volunteer of the year and that is jamie holloran so jamie has been involved she actually has two students at sherwood uh jake is in fifth grade and samantha is in third and uh
022jamie has been involved in her time at sherwood uh many many different roles she's been room reps she's been supported our dances she's been a part of carnivals she's done a whole host of things over the year but really what she's getting recognized for tonight is for supporting our pto's mission this year which was in some really difficult times and some really challenging times was to keep the community involved and to keep our parents engaged with what we're doing at sherwood and obviously that could be really challenging with the times that we're in however jamie likes to have a lot of fun and so she came up with two really cool events this year the first one happened in the fall and it was our sherwood's got talent event so she put on a talent
023show a virtual talent show so the cool thing about this was we don't do that many talent shows and so typically we do this for older kids but we had kids of all ages participate in this and it was a virtual event so we put all the videos together all of the kids submitted these things but the beauty of this was as we saw things from kids that we would never have seen if we didn't give the opportunity for kids to do this we had kids riding horses we had kids showing a skateboard things it was it was incredible so when we talk about bringing the community together she was able to do that through this event and we also had during that time was evening event we had 75 families watching that and it
024wasn't just 75 kids 75 families when you saw on the zoom screen you saw parents sitting with grandparents with kids it was pretty cool so engage in the community the second one just happened actually and it was pretty cool so if you know the mass singer we had our sherwood mass singer event and i don't know how she did it but she had 15 of our sherwood staff members dress up in the sherwood mask and show their vocal props and so then the kids all watched it was an evening event and they had to vote to see who the singers were so once again we set out to engage the community we had 175 kids voting on this so once again i mean we had an incredible turnout but it took time and energy and
025effort and jamie stepped up uh to the challenge and wanted to keep our community together and so we are grateful and blessed that jamie is a part of sherwood we'd like to congratulate you on being our volunteer of the year i apologize i need to go back a school mercer elementary good evening board of education and i just want to say congratulations to the students it was so fun to see you guys all up there because i know all but one personally so congratulations to you guys so it's my pleasure to um recognize tonight bridget wright she's the president of the mercer pta and bridget um was a wonderful pta president and being a pta president during a virtual pandemic is really difficult and she did a great job being able to bring us together
026and focus in on what could we do to support students she was able to provide the leadership to continue to support our staff and students the most tangible piece that she did she brought our tent which is an outdoor learning space to mercer elementary school and it is secure it is wonderful and i wanted to share that it was not just bridgette who was able to bring that but her father so she wrangled her father in to organize it and set it up and she wasn't really able to have him continue to check on it and make sure it was safe so we really appreciate all of the things that she's done for us this year as well she was able to do uh organize two staff recognitions just to say thank you to our
027teachers for all that they've done this year so bridget thank you so much for your time and effort and we really appreciate all that you've done for us summit elementary good evening everyone i'm michelle salstad the principal at summit first of all look at ally look at her outfits summit bees go bees she a great job with that it is a great honor and privilege to introduce summit elementary's volunteer of the year ali cumbie ali has served in many roles for pta during her time at summit in the last six years at summit she has been a room parent a pta treasurer board advisor back to school bash chair and president just to name a few she has helped plan and implement the following projects to completion our summit healthy habits walking trail that goes
028all the way around the school widening the path coming into school so it's safer for students to enter the building installing bike racks in three different areas of the campus the bottle caps to benches in front of the school the playground project which includes a new blacktop basketball hoops play panels for students with limited mobility and netting for behind the hoops her current project is helping summit upgrade to an electronic sign for next year two of these big projects have occurred during the past coveted year of no volunteers allowed in the school so aly and our amazing pta have really focused their efforts on the outside of summit mrs leslie corbett one of her children's teachers shared from my experiences this year with ally and teaching her son i can tell that she is a
029very supportive parent and community member who is always wanting what is best for not only her student students but her all kids at summit elementary her son zach is in fifth grade at summit he says i really appreciate the basketball hoops that she helped get installed this was really popular with the a lot of the students i really like the walking path too i'm thankful for how much she has helped the school her daughter skyler who's in third grade says i love the new recess equipment she helped get for all of the grade levels i like when she is at events like the back to school bash that is special mrs ward and myself as well as the staff have appreciated all of the different projects that ali has led to completion to help our
030school one thing i know about ally and i've learned over the last six years is that if she is in charge of a project that it's going to be done well and it's going to get completed and we appreciate that so much she's gone above and beyond to support our students and staff and for that i thank you very much ali congratulations also i would be remiss because he's here to add her husband josh cumby is often a helper with putting and installing some of these projects in so let's give josh a hand too wilson elementary good evening i'm erin store the principal wilson and i'm excited to honor mary forte as our volunteer of the year on behalf of the students staff and parents at wilson we'd like to thank mary for her continuous
031commitment to our school not only as a parent herself but as our pto president and volunteer the pandemic made volunteering more complicated this year as new safety measures were put in place mary collaborated with our administrative team to think outside the box in order to provide support to our students and staff despite an added layer of difficulty to every aspect of the school experience mary is always more than willing to dedicate the time and energy to make things happen we are so grateful to have mary's support at wilson we wouldn't have been able to accomplish the many things we did this year without mary's help mary is always positive and solution focused when it comes to doing all we can for our wilson wildcats mary's dedication to the staff and students of wilson is incredible
032we are appreciative of her leadership within the pto and her willingness to help out our teachers and staff at wilson no task is too large and no gesture of kindness is too small whether it's organizing special treats for the staff or all the special events mary is the constant beacon of positive energy behind it all she doesn't do it for the recognition but rather in an effort to do to best serve our community thank you so much for all your work mary we appreciate you and are eternally grateful for your dedication to wilson once again i'd like to thank everyone who came to the podium this evening thank you very much volunteers as every one who spoke this evening so eloquently said we cannot do this without you and we thank you very much i'd
033like to recommend the board commend these volunteers for their dedication and service to the students of forest hills and a certificate of accommodation obviously will be presented to each of them i'll make a motion to commend the volunteers for their dedication and service to the students of forest hills and a certificate of commendation be presented to them robert mrs meyer yes ms joyce yes dr rasmussen yes mrs taylor yes dr heiss yes thank you again another now i will say that you while you are absolutely welcome to remain for the rest of the meeting it is tradition to allow anyone who would like to leave to leave now or at any point after this yeah except for you scott but thank you again for everything that you've done for our students dr heissen members of
034the board and uh item seven uh anderson uh excuse me district updates from the superintendent in our last board information update that i provided i reminded the board that we would have two presentations from students this evening and their teachers would be uh with them uh so i'd like to have mr sears come to the podium we're gonna talk with jeremy varner eighth grade nagel and also uh betsy ryan will be providing an update with hope squad so thank you thank you mr prebbles and board um clearly we have a lot to celebrate navigating this year with the kova challenges that we have and first of all i want to congratulate even though they're probably walked out all of the students and their amazing academic accomplishments tremendous work by all of them i also want
035to thank our volunteers who would go above and beyond for our kids to provide incredible experiences and what i heard over and over is all the efforts to create experiences for kids for us to navigate difficult times and create some sense of normalcy in a tough school year um tremendous work by all of them um as we're here tonight there's two two opportunities we talked a little bit about in in the in the future where we're going and part of that is we recognize the academic achievements our students have but also creating amazing learning experiences for kids that allow them to develop critical thinking problem solving creativity and global collaborative skills i happen to be in mr varner an 8th grade science teacher at nagel middle school in his class recently and witnessed his students
036doing some incredible work so we've invited mr varner here and three of his students and also mr mack um who is supporting this group of folks and some really fantastic learning experiences that they've been participating in so at this time i'm going to ask mr jeremy varner 8th grade science teacher at nagel to come up and give a quick overview and he's going to turn it over to our students thank you mr sears and thank you board for uh having us um into the middle of your meeting tonight um greg did a really good job of introducing it but i would just like to say that while the challenges have been very real it's not an excuse to not innovate and overcome it just looks a little differently what it's looking like this year as
037opposed to in the past so the three students uh that are here tonight are they are gonna they have everything to say that you really want to hear but i would just like to commend them for their exemplary in their leadership and they will show hopefully how nagel is not accepting the things that happened to us but rather we're taking them and transforming them and moving forward with innovative ways no matter what the what the ear is going to throw at us so i'd like to introduce luke and maya and cali and let them show you our latest attempt to be innovative learners in eighth grade um hi uh i'm cali this is maya and luke and we're here to talk about our mission skyward bound in our 8th grade science class so our goal
038is to design and successfully launch a spacecraft and also have gps tracking so we can find it and track it wherever it goes and also have a video camera somewhere on our design so that we can bring back footage from our launch and lastly run an experiment um at or beyond the 100 000 feet barrier which is like um over 18 miles at the elevation barrier um in order to achieve some of the goals that callie mentioned um we really realized that we probably needed to look beyond how we would normally approach a project like this as 8th graders and mr mack and mrs cervana they came in and taught us some like real world strategies that we can use that are industry-leading and we also know we have to access and engage some content
039knowledge that's probably critical to our launch but we also need to customize it and specify it to what we learn as 8th graders in our curriculum we're going to use a lot of our previous knowledge and experience using different design processes and applicable and apply the design procedures uh to engineer the best solutions to our problem so our plan for the lunch for our launch is to launch the island's craft on may 24th and we're going to do that by incorporating and expanding upon previously learned strategies and that we've learned in eighth grade so some of the strategies and topics include the agile scrum the engineering design process but we also have to learn new topics and concepts in high level math and calculus so that we know how far away the spacecraft will land
040on launch day and the way that we're going to do that including involves splitting up certain elements of the math but that will be gone more in depth into later so to reach our goal we are applying the previous mentioned agile concept called scrum and using resources such as a kanban board to organize our plan work as a team and get feedback loops and design and iteration a kanban board helps separate our progress into steps such as project backing what we need to do what we're doing our pitch and then when we're done so as 8th graders we're familiar with the engineering design process and we've used it actually just in science class numerous times in the past year and i'm currently in a stem encore class where we're applying that as well and our
041prior knowledge and experience incorporated with the strategies kali mentioned will be applied in order to follow the steps identify research prototype and eventually test our solutions communicating our solutions which is a huge part of the engineering design process will be much easier using a kanban board because students all across our team and in our science classes will be able to collaborate over one big project we have student groups previously determined and designs from each group will eventually be reviewed and combined in order to obtain our best results for this project so the third way that we're going to try and get to launch day successfully involves doing the math versus and decent atmospheric wind patterns and also the lift method for the craft and the way that we're going to do that involves splitting involves
042taking the math and splitting them up into swinging the elements up in into basically their own mini units so the students can be led hem by hand and step by step slowly along the way to the end pro and along the way to the end product and in doing this it makes it much less much less hard and strenuous for the students but makes it more fun and immersive so they can really see their project come to life and really appreciate the end product so thank you for coming today if you have any if you have any questions we'll get around to you we didn't know if you had any questions about the extent of the project or any specifics on it but we want to give you an opportunity to ask if you had
043any so takeoff is on may 24th is that i'm sorry it's actually may 21st friday may 21st it'll be up at the football field area here um it's going to be early in the morning like about eight o'clock or nine o'clock it depends we have to um get clearance from the faa to do this yes all right lawsuits are i got you covered it's and if you if well mr max got you covered i'm just here to support little things you find out at a board meeting yes um but yes you're all welcome to be there uh we have some some experts coming in from the east coast um some retired people from the navy from annapolis will be coming in to help us do this um there's also possibly some people from the cincinnati
044observatory that are coming down as well we're still putting some things together about that but we'd love to have you here if you got nothing else to do at nine o'clock in the morning on the 21st i don't have any questions just some encouragement because i was blown away i don't even know if you can see my reaction with my eyes but to hear you all talk the way that you did it's one thing to learn facts in school and it's another thing to know how to apply them in the world and to hear the level of problem solving for eighth grade is phenomenal so i just want to encourage you keep asking questions when you can't figure it out just go ask someone because i'm so impressed thank you and and honestly it's there
045you we don't even have time to go into so much you ever want to come into the classroom these guys are amazing so believe it yeah well i want to thank you also because you're about to engage with some very uh important people who are experts in the field and you're going to be great ambassadors for the forest hills school district i wish you good luck with your project and i'll be interested to find out how it went and i'll be there but i'd like to you know hear how the results come out from your testing and the observations that you make so thank you very much it's great stuff maybe we'll have you back from show us the pictures oh yeah well well this video will like set it to music it'll be dramatic
046that'll be great yeah we'll see we're still trying to cast who's going to play these people in the hollywood film we have a guy who said yeah all right we'll see them thank you amazing [Applause] a lot of other good work taking place in our school district we want to share with folks in the audience what's happening with our hope squad at the district level so uh or within the district so uh mrs ryan uh welcome and let's hear what's going on thank you good evening i get to um as mr sears shared this is a um a great night to celebrate i get to share the great work our hope squads are doing and how we're all supporting one another especially in a year like we've experienced so a few years ago we presented
047our plans to you about incorporating a suicide prevention program we referred we referred to as hope squad hope squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program where members are nominated by their peers and are trained in an evidence-based suicide prevention gatekeeper modeled called qpr stands for question persuade and refer training modules vary and are administered to different grade levels depending upon the age students are also trained in active listening when students have mental health emotional well-being or suicide concerns the purpose and mission of hope squad is to reduce youth suicide through education and training and intentional outreach through peer support the key elements include the qpr training for both staff and for our st students positive messaging curriculum and intentional outreach all developed from best practices in the mental health and suicide prevention fields currently there
048are about 40 students in each high school and about 50 students at nagel there's 130 students now that are part of our hope squads across the three buildings they are trained through student orientations and qpr to identify at-risk students to know how to help seek help them to seek support from the adults throughout the school year they are guided by our our awesome trained teacher advisors who elect to be trained and serve in that role all three buildings nagel anderson and turpin participate with our counselors administrators and teacher advisors there's also a parent orientation for all parents of hope squad members at the start of each year each building hope squad launches their year with a hope week in the late fall after nominations to support building-wide efforts to reach out to the students to
049promote a culture of belonging hope and support the concept behind hope squad is that students will go to trusted students or peers first if they are at risk or seeking help and support they're then linked to a trusted adult who can connect them to necessary resources and supports the forest hills foundation for education has supported the cost of these three buildings to be able to participate in over the last three years we've seen some incredible culture changes to our buildings as these events have occurred and students are connected due to the efforts of their own students and staff we have also taken qpr and trained our secondary teachers our sixth grade teachers our administrators all in qpr and we hope to continue to expand that training through health classes coaches and different orientations throughout this
050summer and next year tonight we have connor bergman and maya gavin from nagle middle school we have quinn bailey from turpin high school and jackson trigg from anderson high school since it's always great having our students here our plan this evening is to have each of them share a snippet of the selection process and training some of the great initiatives and events they've participated in and their member roles so i'm going to ask maya and connor hi everyone my name is connor and i'm an 8th grader at nagel and this is my second year in hope squad i'm maya i'm also an 8th grader this is also my second year in hope squad so last year was the first year of the hope squad program at nagel on me and maya are part of the
051original nagel hope squad and in order to build our squad we do a peer nomination process and during this process each seventh grader fills out a google form and nominates up to three people that they think are fit to be a hope squad member hope squad members typically display the characteristics of being concerned about others easy to talk to and someone that is trustworthy as members we learn about qpr which stands for question persuade and refer and qpr is a protocol that offers hope through positive action for our training we have a building rep from the grantis hope organization and they come and they teach us about question persuade and refer and other skills that we often use as hope squad members so through qpr students can come to recognize warning signs clues and suicidal
052communications of people potentially in trouble and we gain the needed skills in order to prevent a possible tragedy last year our training for gpr looked different obviously pre-covered and we went off-site for training last year but we weren't able to do that this year it was still pretty similar i would say we still got to participate in activities and um role play and interact with last year's eighth graders same as we did this year with this year's seventh graders um using the skills that we obtain during qpr training we're more equipped to handle specific situations and i would say we're more able to positively impact the nato community as a whole qpr training is an important life skill that we can actively apply for the rest of our lives thank you hi my name is
053quinn bailey and i am a sophomore at turpin high school i am also a hope squad member hope squad resonated with me because i saw the need to improve mental health and awareness within our school and our school district one student's life loss is too many and so anything we can do to prevent that from happening to another student and another family i felt was truly important that is why i want to begin with thanking you for having me here tonight to explain all about hope squad and what it means to be a role model as a member of hope spot it is our role to know the warning signs to recognize when a fellow student is struggling we are trained in qpr which helps give us the words to reach out to students and
054connect them with a trusted adult who can get them the support they need our life-saving education and training helps us reach identify and support our fellow students another important role of hope squad members is to bring mental health awareness and education to the student body as a whole we sponsor activities and initiatives to try to create a positive and influential school culture environment through my experiences as a hope squad member i was able to internship at the grant us hope office in which they support hope squads in the state through this internship i have seen i have been able to advocate for mental health not only within the community but as the whole state and i've been able to see the amazing and incredible work that all of the hope squads have been doing like
055mr varner said adapting was a huge thing for a lot of schools this year especially as a lot were online so forest hills and other schools hope squads have met that challenge and they have been able to connect with students on social media and provide the same quality as when we were in school mental health is just as important as physical health it is so difficult to talk about and accept but it is needed i truly appreciate turpin and forest hill school district continued support for hope swats as a district and hope squad members we strive to stop the stigma reach students who are struggling and just provide an open and more accepting environment to all students thank you all hi my name is jackson trigg and i'm an 11th grader who's also part of
056the member of the hope squad and this year has been a little difficult to organize activities but we've still been able to manage our big thing of the year is always hope week and hope we usually try to raise awareness for mental health by you know like organizing different raffles and we always have door greeters and daily challenges we even go like we create a giant banner that students get to sign during lunch we have music at lunch it's just it really increases the i guess like the liveness in the environment and the school culture it just makes a huge difference like the kids always talk about like you know it's just always upbeat and we pass out candy and like usually that's when we usually distribute like each student gets their own card or
057a bracelet basically to make sure that they always know that there's a place that we can reach out when they need help we've usually created a bulletin board where everyone's names and like how you can reach them and talk to them and it's always been really helpful like i've been reached out multiple times because this board is usually it's very noticeable it's right next to the lunchroom and it's just right in the center where everyone can see it when they need it and even then we've spread throughout the year with our different hope days and depending on the season like around halloween we passed out candy christmas we had candy canes recently we did our spreading hope pens with clothespins that were decorated with different positive messages and the idea was they would be spread
058around the school and it was really cool because like we made over a thousand of these it was just cool like throughout the day they were getting spread between different people like just these positive messages and positive vibes that helped really like just increase the awareness and like everyone just seemed to be really appreciative of it and then recently we had our walk for hope which is up on the screen where we did it along anderson and turpin and nagel and we had the entire school involved where they came out and did a couple laps on the track and we just raised awareness we had different photo boards and we had popsicles and just like it gave time especially during state testing to just take a breather and remember that it's okay to not be
059okay and that it's okay to talk about mental health we've just been really fortunate this year to even when times have been tough to organize these different events we've managed to raise awareness for the different health of our mental peers thank you so they all said it better than i did uh they are uh great ambassadors for our for our buildings especially when it comes to supporting mental wellness i also want to thank our great counselors who have been a huge part of the work with hope squad our teacher advisors who've put in a whole lot of time for training and work directly with our hope squad members and especially our parents who support this work for their their their own students to be a part and just to see the culture develop within these
060buildings has just been uh pretty amazing so i just wanted to thank you guys for joining us tonight and if you have any questions for them um i just have a comment i'm so impressed with you guys that that's not an easy job and you've taken that on and i i appreciate that and i thank you for what you do keep up the good work because we never we never know what we might say to someone that might help them you never know so thanks and thanks thanks to the foundation as well for supporting that as we continue in our school district to meet the expectations of our strategic vision one of those is to as much as possible engage our students in the direction and the decisions to build a culture within our schools
061that make sense to them that is engaging to them and that offers them opportunity to help us create space and create opportunity where they can shine your work although it is extremely serious work when you consider the the reason for the group for hope squad it also provides great excitement for me because it is the fulfillment that i receive from having students create circumstances that help us all and that help your peers and that make our schools stronger your voice is important the things that you see the things that you witness the information that you provide to us is essential to provide an atmosphere and a culture that is in your best interest i cannot thank you enough for all of the work that you have put in and the time and dedication that you've
062put into this project and others because your voice is important and i appreciate that and i thank you thank you very much dr heiss i'd like to ask mr broadwater please to start our presentation on the anderson high school aquatics report thank you good evening and it's always tough following up our kids and our volunteers i say congratulations to all our volunteers to our kids i love hearing kids talk it really refocuses why we're here and what we do and i say kudos to everything that they're doing and i thank the staff for being here as well uh if the board if you recall in february we were asked to do a formal investigation of the anderson swimming pool i did place a report on your table there that some board members had been asking
063questions about some comparisons with other districts and how many students uh use the pool and so forth so i wanted to take a couple minutes and then i'm going to turn it over to our experts who did the formal investigation but the first part that i have there is the current usage of the turpin pool right now and the turpin diving team we have 14 participants and i did meet with the athletic directors this past week to make sure these numbers are accurate and to the best of their knowledge they are but we have 14 turpin divers we have 59 turpin swimmers we've got 73 students participating from turpin we have 10 anderson divers 35 anderson swimmers so 45 total there and then we have 25 total negl participants for a total of 143 participants
064we also have at turpin the physical education which is in the freshman program it is not an academic mandate it's something that is offered because the pool is there at turpin the next part that i have there under part a what i did and i had some board members asking well what do other districts have so what i did was compiled all of the multiple high school districts that are suburban in the state of ohio i did not do the urban district simply because they've got some different circumstances when it comes to facilities but i can certainly do that if you're interested sylvania has two high schools they have one pool in the district that is shared by both high schools worthington in columbus has two high schools they do not have any pools in
065the district and i put a little explanation in the column as far as how they then participate uh with their swimmers northwest here in cincinnati has two high schools no swimming pools lakota two high schools no swimming pools dublin three high schools no swimming pools parma in the southwest suburb of cleveland three high schools three swimming pools westerville in columbus has three high schools zero swimming pools olin tangi is four high schools and zero swimming pools hilliard in columbus three high schools zero swimming pools pickington southwestern you can see there and then forest hills is a comparison i have there where we have the two high schools and currently the one that is operating as you can see i also put a column there with enrollment so you know how many students are at those
066schools the other part of the study that i put together was our conference and in our conference currently anderson and turpin we know are participating at turpin kings lebanon little miami loveland do not have swimming pools at their high school milford and walnut hills and west claremont do and winton woods high school does not have a swimming pool either so i think because i had some board members asking i wanted to present that very quickly just so you have an idea what is going on around the state with swimming pools at this time what i would like to do is with the formal investigation invite chris paytech who is the lead architect from msa ben young who is the engineer for moats engineering will discuss the mechanical electrical and plumbing we also have steve crocker
067hopefully who has been able to patch in via zoom and steve is with waters technology the swimming pool expert they're located out of wisconsin and i will then tur i will go ahead and turn it over to chris to present his findings on the formal investigation thank you mike appreciate it you might hear me i appreciate you having me here this evening as mike mentioned uh we were asked to do an assessment of the existing anderson high school natatorium facility um as mike mentioned there's several of us on the group including the ones that was mentioned here we also had obstruction engineers some civil engineers and other of other agencies looking at some subsurface conditions and so on but the primary goal of looking at what would it take to bring the heist anderson high
068school pool back into operation we kind of looked at it from a couple different levels as you'll see and kind of this good better best mentality right what's kind of the minimum that needs to happen to make the facility functional and then what are some additional improvements that might be considered along the way as we look at it as was mentioned uh steve with water technologies is going to join us virtually so i may have to cover some of his parts here depending how everybody can hear him this evening so i apologize but steve is a expert in pool design engineering they work on facilities across the country both new and existing so it's good to have steve on the team so with that to go to the next slide so as far as the
069current state of the pool i know many of you know uh if you've been or seen pictures the uh existing pulling go the next item the existing pool facility uh is currently there's no water in the pool and it's been sitting there for a period of time vacant we did we did utilize as part of our study we were given there was a couple of third-party evaluations that were done within the past year so from some local pool experts and so we were given that information as well that we took into consideration as part of this overall assessment uh we also did some on-site inspections both our team as well as some other experts that we brought in and then obviously just reviewing the existing drawings and documents themselves of which there are some available
070so the next one again as far as the existing facility as many notes it's a 60 plus year old facility was existing to that building as we know all i know when things get that old certainly there's things that tend to be in need of repair replacement there's certain maintenance and operation that's involved with that certainly the pool systems and the equipment we'll talk through that here in a minute much of it is at the end of its life if not way past the end of its life much of it needs to be repaired or replaced which we'll talk about here in a minute um the pool vessel which is what we refer to as the actual the pool itself that holds the water um it was experienced a fairly substantial water loss for a
071period of time which it was one reason why it was shut down a while back so i was looking into that and seeing um what impact that has and and what the cause of senate might have been the the diving component of the pool is actually non-compliant with current diving regulations so steve will talk about a little bit so it's looking at yeah if diving wants to continue at anderson high school pool what would it take to do that we looked at the deck the drainage as you'll see one thing we found a lot of the drainage isn't currently functional uh isn't tied in properly to uh some site utilities and so that's something we need to take a closer look at indoor air quality and then just the outdated finishes was something we also
072took into consideration when you look at some of the different improvements obviously some of those aren't uh necessarily needed in all cases but some of those would be impacted just from the purely from the um the improvements that we've done within the pool facility itself so with that go to the next slide uh we'll go through some of our key findings and recommendations again we're going to try and keep this at a high level for the sake of this evening um you obviously feel free to ask questions as we get into this and we can i'm trying to answer some of that we basically broke it down into into two primary categories as we assessed the pool and looked at some different recommendations one was just simply the pool and the pool systems right the
073core which is obviously the most costly and obviously the most important component of the natatorium which steve's going to talk about a little bit and then the other part is just the infrastructure so that that is the rest of the facilities around the pool right the building itself uh hvac hvac systems electrical systems and so on so we kind of broke it down into those two groups to try and make sense of it as we look at this so as far as the pool and the pool systems i don't know steve are you able to talk see people can hear hold on a second steve it's the challenge of a virtual go ahead steve you can you can try you can hear me okay not hearing it cameron very much but i'll go through the
074kind of the recommendations related to the pool and uh first i wanted to say that the recommendations are substantial enough that the school that the renovation of the pool would require getting a new permit and review by the health department so um number one the cool was originally designed with an eight-hour turnover which means that every every gallon of water it goes through the filter in an eight-hour period that's a little bit of an outdated uh great uh the industry standard now is for a competition pool to circulate every six hours so as part of the renovation we are recommending that that uh circulation rate be upgraded with uh with a larger pump and an additional filter so currently the pool uses three sand filters the kind of residential style sand filters the upgrade would
075require an upgrade to the pump as well as an additional filter in conjunction with upgrading a pump we would do we would recommend a variable frequency drive connected to a a modern flow meter that can optimize the slow uh circulation rate of for cool at all times whether the filter is clean or dirty and that minimizes the electrical usage and therefore operational cost for the pool the next is the main drainage the pool the pool has main drains at the deepest point and the piping associated with them as well as the main drains are are not up to code and the piping has uh has almost certainly failed so we're recommending in the sounds if it sounds extreme but we do this a lot with renovations where you basically cut cut a trench through the
076pool floor and through the deck and install all new piping and and tune and maintain function and grading we're also recommending that the pool uh get a new gutter system and the gutter uh the gutter would be a stainless steel system and it would have it would have the gutter itself as well as the supply tube uh an inlet system that brings fresh filtered water back to the pool so basically that would be cutting off the top of the pool the old gutter through the concrete vertically and horizontally and then installing a new stainless steel gutter system and that's a that's a process that we commonly do for renovations like this and the real real beauty of that system is that it replaces all of the perimeter piping that is under the pool deck right
077now and all those old inlets and the walls in the pool wall can just get uh can just get filled because they will be obsolete with the new gutter system as part of this work there's going to be a lot of repairs to the a lot of cutting of the cool net to install that piping there's also a need to replace the deck drains the deck drains are not uh are not functional and in fact they're in violation of current as well as patch patch and do a new finish on the deck um a pool with the gutter requires a surge tank in the old india and when this pool is designed the the vacuum bb filter tank uh functioned as a surge tank so we're recommending that it can be converted into a surge
078tank as part of the new the renovated cool system next is we're recommending a couple new chemical storage tanks that have that have secondary containment the pool uses chlorine liquid chlorine and uradic acid and it's quite it's quite dangerous that those two chemicals were if one of the tanks would leak and those two chemicals would get mixed so for safety it's important to have a secondary containment uh we're recommending the starting block with the handles of the wedge that athletes have grown accustomed to and and new ladders around the cool perimeter for ada compliance the pool does require a cool delivery so we're recommending a battery actuated cool lift um so that's to meet that requirement and then finally it's important to note that we don't want to have a weak length so it's critical
079that 100 of all the old metal piping gets replaced as part of this renovation um so that's that's very important and then and then finally you know we uh you know with concrete replacement and and uh it has a history of leaking so we're recommending that the entire pool have a new it's pvc 60 ml membrane to ensure the water tightness and long-term durability of the uh and water types of the cool vessel so those are the kind of have to do type of uh recommendations that we have found and those are in in almost a hundred percent of the cases those line up well with the uh with the review that was done by uh shamrock pools touch on those two that's okay um for these last couple again as we talked about you
080guys hear me okay but um as far as the c13 kind of what the base level minimum which we'll talk about here again a little bit more in a minute um these are some additional items that the team kind of brought to the forefront you'll see here we kind of broke these out when we get toward the end i'm just upgrading some of the pool membranes to look at some longevity life expectancy so looking at some stainless steel components to that potentially as an added improvement upgrading the filtration system so you mentioned the base level there's some additional filtration systems nowadays that would help improve water quality also has to do with how much when they when you backwash the pool and these kind of things it helps conserve water and so there's potential value
081to that they could see some paybacks that might be considered and then obviously the big one is modifying the diving well so if if the desire is to have diving and continue to dive into anderson high school pool there would have to be some fairly significant modifications to the diving well to make sure it complies with usa diving and high school requirements next one um as far as the facility infrastructure and have bank come up here for a minute uh this again hits on a lot of the actual building components themselves so we want to touch on those briefly and then we'll kind of go into a summary here thank you my name's ben young i'm with moats engineering and in conjunction with water technologies and klein injures and msa we were able to look
082at the existing infrastructure from the pool and first off we want to commend the district for being able to maintain the pool as long as they have there's been a lot of work done over the years to continue the operation of the pool and that's very important especially as we talk about replacing components and other items a lot of times the question comes up is why do they need to be replaced and a lot of the reason that the items need to be replaced or due to the age they've been taken care of i would say meticulously over the years just at some point the shoes start to wear out and you're kind of there right now the when the renovation took place a number of the electrical service around the pool area was replaced
083but the inside of the filtration area was not touched so that would need to be replaced especially to serve the increased filtration that would be required based on the six hour turn of the water controls related to the central building management system there are two air handling units currently in the building or in the pool area that are able to be seen by the building management system that would be the user interface that your facilities department would look at we would also like to add the pool to be able to see that on the system so you're able to see what's going on with the pool currently right now it's all a manual operation rerouting the drain piping to the site sanitary and waste steve mentioned when the pool was originally built basically if water
084went into the gutters or the water was on the pool deck it was drained out of the building and then it was drained into the site storm storm being different sanitary and it was my understanding that the storm just went to the creek that is no longer allowed by code so if we put new pool deck drains in which is required for two reasons one is because in a number of areas they're collapsed underneath the floor they're rotted out or they're old that would be now taken to the sanitary because that's what's required by the code also coming from the pool when you back wash there's a substantial amount of water that's created as they clean the filter systems that filtered water or that backwash water is also discharged into the sanitary currently through one
085reason or another most likely due to age that discharge line from the building pump room to the outside of the building or to the street for lack of better terms is no longer functional and that would need to be replaced and another item that is certainly in there it's not on the screen is that the pool heater you're on your second pool heater we know that because the original pool heater is there and there's a revised or a newer pool heater there but it also has past its useful life yes i get the second slide too um the currently the existing lighting fixtures that are in the pool are uh are dated um they're also not energy efficient as you're sitting here in the gym with the led lighting what is currently installed has a
086higher maintenance cost higher energy usage cost it would be beneficial to replace those while you're in there for two reasons one is for the energy efficiency and the longevity but also so you don't have to get a lift or something back in on top of whatever you do with the pool deck surface the ceiling of course is substantially high and you have to get something of some size in there the existing hvac units currently you have heating in the pool you do not have cooling and you do not have a way to control the humidification it will give someone forethought when they replaced the units that are in that lower area above the diving boards they did put a nice unit in there the unit at the time was not hooked up to the chilled
087water which would give you your cooling and your dehumidification as part of this project it would be suggested that that be that be hooked up the pool water heater i already touched on and i think chris will go ahead and hit the other two items um so again just to clarify too these items are again are these you'll see is and we go through some of the lists or these additional improvements uh it wouldn't be baseline necessarily but as part of this there's some finished upgrades we included painting and that first kind of piece is because the amount of work happening there along with the pool deck would happen but these additional upgrades ceiling system in there you know it's a lay-in uh gridded system it's had some issues over the years and um so
088as part of this if we were to replace the lighting and update the finishes so we would also propose or recommend to replace that ceiling system with a different type of system um also this the seating himself again the seat itself is is adequate it's older and so again we looked at there are some some maintenance issues with those so again as part of the full package if we looked at the overall improvements uh something that might be considered as part of this worker soon soon thereafter and then the railing system itself again nothing that would have to be touched right away as part of the overall improvements the facility i was doing some upgrades to those railing systems up along the seating areas okay the next one so with that i want to kind
089of walk through some of the considerations that the team put together for the the district to to consider moving forward so you go to the next one so again we kind of looked at this and i mentioned before this sort of good better best so looking at a couple different ways just to give the district and the board something to consider again moving forward we looked at again just the baseline what would it take to renovate the pool based on a lot of things that you saw up there what would it take to renovate and also then include diving and you'll see it kind of both ways include diving don't include diving and then obviously the other one that we considered just to consider for the sake of the exercise was what if we replace
090the pool itself within the current facility because you'll see as we start to look at significant improvements like diving wells and things like that the cost to renovate verse or play starts to get pretty close so if you go to the next slide so this first one just looked at again if you just simply renovated it did the minimum work you saw there the first couple slides and these costs by the way these are these are concept budget costs and that the team helped put together this includes the full project cost so we've got some additional breakdowns we can share with the group here as we get into it but essentially that's you know the cost to do the work the construction getting the contractors on board all those additional contingencies and allowances and then
091also even what we would consider non-construction so you have to hire a group to do the engineering on that and yes you get permits so it's the full cost that you would do for the entire project not just for the pool itself within these costs the majority of that is the pool the pool systems the pool its components but we tried to give you kind of a holistic if you were going to consider what would the total cost be so this first one you can see it's you know close to a million million two just to do some of that minimum base level renovation work uh the added improvements are those items you saw kind of the secondary items on those slides right so the things like the additional efficiencies and some of the filter
092upgrades the pool membrane upgrades some of those particularly hvac upgrades you know that kind of stuff is part of the added improvements which you can see adds about another half million so the total cost just for the base level anywhere from a million if you did the minimum up you can see about 1.8 or so if you started to include all the different improvements in there at the high end go to the next one and we can come back to these um so this end looks like if you start to include diving obviously the big ad there is the actual diving well itself you can see it's a pretty it's a pretty good range the 400 to 750 and that's for a couple reasons right now based on what we know as i mentioned we
093have had some additional sub-surface work investigation done on the pool itself it's not entirely clear what the foundations and some of the conditions are under that pool other than just knowing that what it would take to potentially dig that up and redo it and so because of that you know we've still given it a fairly decent range because of until some additional work could be done to dig down and kind of figure out exactly what's going on in and around that pool if this if this was a direction that the district ultimately wanted to go um you can see it's still it's still a decent sized range either way it's a fairly substantial cost obviously to start digging that pool up as steve mentioned earlier you know replacing the gutters and and digging and starting
094to tear up the pool deck there's already going to be a fair amount of invasive work happening so that adding the diving well to that at some point you're going to start to dig up a fair amount of that pool so that modified the diving well is really the difference between the previous slide now you can see at the high end you start getting up into that almost two and a half million if you include all the improvements plus the diving again we'll kind of show this a couple different ways here in a minute for the next one is this the next one oh there you go okay so this kind of just does a quick comparison between those two again the idea that if you just renovate it in place with diving i'm sorry
095so this added was that the previous sorry that wasn't i wasn't reading it so i'm sorry this one actually looked at uh if you started to replace the pool as the numbers look close so replacing the pool is exactly that so as opposed to starting to piecemeal and do little bits and pieces within the existing facility we would you know propose actually digging up that pool within the existing footprint of the building and replacing the pool itself and pouring in an entirely new pool i would still have all the same systems and all the other components that we talked about it would just now be part of that new project so that's where sorry i got that confused that's where when you look at that it goes from that you know almost 1.7 number up
096to the again about that 2.5 million dollar number to put an entirely new pool in there the improvements the other improvements we mentioned would still be similar so the hvac painting the walls replacing the seating right those the ceiling that kind of stuff wouldn't would still be the same whether you replace the pool or whether you renovate the pool right because that's outside of the confines of that if you go the next one which again this is more the comparison so this is where you can start to see renovating the pool particularly when you start to add diving so again the bare minimum right that kind of one million dollar number you start to add diving in there it gets up close to that 2.5 on the high end if you do the different improvements
097so if you look at replacing the pool uh entirely within the facility um you can see you're right about that same number that 2.5 number on the high end if you do all the different improvements as well so if you go to the next one um again this just looked at the can again another way to look at the comparison renovating versus replacing with no diving which is that top number kind of 1.2 you can see to 1.5 or if you replaced it 1.7 point almost 2 million if you renovated it and added diving or if you replace it and added diving that's where you get to that about 1.6 on the top there and then on the lower end you know the 1.9 to 2.2 so if you look at the light green numbers
098which is the replace numbers versus the renovate when you start introducing diving is where you see that those numbers start to jump you start to see more of a comparison between the two we did talk about as a group there's there's a possibility if you were going to replace it uh if you weren't going to have diving at this facility anymore um it is it is a bit lower cost as you can see on the top you could still you would still potentially replace it but without making it uh diving compliant so it wouldn't be as deep you don't get into all the kind of different structural kind of subsurface conditions so that cost would be would be a little bit lower and again more more in line with just renovating the pool uh it's
099really when you start adding that diving component that starts to be that number starts to jump up a little bit quicker so you want to go back to the so i think at that we wanted to open it up for some questions i know that's a lot of information again we try to make it somewhat high level and there's a lot that went into that from this group but if there's some specific questions we could help answer just relative to the evaluation things that maybe weren't quite addressed in the presentation there is a report that we're finalizing that we'll share with uh with the district that kind of gives a little bit more detail into some of these different items one thing like i said we like to open it up for some one question
100i would have please um can you give sort of an estimate on the time necessary for each of these options the amount of time it would take to accomplish option one two and three sure please um i don't know since steve's still on he's off all right i'll wing it i'm sorry so just that's okay so to some degree the uh the renovation portion and we've talked about just even you know there's a certain amount of time it's gonna take just to do the design and engineering component to that um the actual work itself is a three to four month kind of time frame from the renovation standpoint when you actually start that work again there's there's another two three months or so in there just to prep that and get it ready and to
101actually go out to bid and get contractors on board and so on and that's really because you know you're really not getting into the base as much of the invasive work you're still doing the drainage those kind of things when you start getting into full replacement it's going to add about another three months onto that so it's looking more like a four five month uh could be potentially six depending on what we would find underneath the ground underneath that pool um so it's it's uh it's something that's couldn't happen over a summer necessarily it was something that would have to take um you know during this during the school year and and either before after depending on when that would start but yeah so you're talking anywhere from you know three if you did the
102renovation to it could be upwards of five to six months if you did the full the full replacement thank you um so you alluded to um looking underneath the pool surface like if you started to dig down to do diving was there any investigation into finding where the leak was going i know we had some concerns about that yeah so the question was about and what's going on under if we were able to find out what's going on underneath the pool um so i mentioned there has been uh some some radar kind of detection type equipment that was used by a group called terracon which is a local geotechnical so they have done that investigative work we don't have the final reports on exactly what's going on just based on the observations that those groups
103have made in structural engineers there wasn't any apparent visual kind of failures that have happened and around the pool that they were concerned about but they are looking for if there's any voids or any kind of conditions underneath that pool that would be in concern given the fact that it had some fairly substantial water loss i think the team and looking at the different components feels that a majority of that water was a combination of existing piping and valves and things within the pool equipment as well as kind of just to given the age of the pool vessel things like lighting components there are some you know some contraction some joints and things in the pool that could allow some water through but that we don't have like i say the final final conclusion to
104that there has there has been some investigative work to determine if there's any kind of significant voids or any kind of conditions that would be of concern underneath the uh underneath the pool any other general questions you have an idea how much the or and if there's a difference on upkeep of the pool a yearly upkeep for the if there's one ongoing operation costs the operation yearly operation cost yeah i don't know if you know if we had that been annual operation i believe it would be better to be addressed by steve crocker from wti the the last phone call we had i think he had a rough idea of what it cost to maintain the pool but it also depended on the filter systems that were put into it there's a significant difference between
105just backwashing with water and the amount of water that flows through which is of course your operational cost versus if you go with an enhanced filtration where they're able to minimize the amount of water that goes through it so i think it's a fairly wide range i i did ask that question to mr crocker he said it was from 80 000 to 150 000 which obviously is a large large window and it kind of relates to what ben is talking about but that's all that's electric water chemicals and so forth per year 80 to one year and i guess you said that you are waiting for kind of like the structural re response back right to confirm like if we did move you'd kind of have to get that information to make sure if we
106did any work you didn't have a further complications sure you did you would have to know what the remedy is right and that's a combination of i think again in the situation where you'd renovate that pool and not modify the depth of it do any kind of significant work under that pool that it wouldn't be i think the team felt it wouldn't be a concern to do any just to be able to renovate and keep it in place it's when you start to actually introduce diving right and trying to to lower the depth of the diving area where yeah we would want to have that i think the district will want to have that report to make sure there's not any other more significant conditions again just based on what the team saw the observations
107around the around the facility didn't see anything that would suggest in the couple years it's been sitting vacant that there would be anything significant um even under the surface but yeah we'd want to have that report just to see if that if anything would help us tighten that range up that we showed for adding the diving well so instead of being a three or four hundred thousand dollar swing you know we'd be able to hone in on is it on the lower end or on the higher end based on some of that stuff those subsurface but really would only come into play if the decision was to start to modify the the diving well and or replace it entirely or something like that where we have to actually start to get dig it up yeah
108what is the timing on that um it should be within the next week i think if they were doing the work a week or so ago i think they were out there doing the sounding the testing so we were hoping to have it for this evening but i think it's it should be here within the next week thank you um i just say i mean i feel kind of overwhelmed with the the i mean i expected you know what i mean some costs um in your professional opinions do you have you know a thought of which would be the perfect path should we actually want to move down sure with the pool i think based on the the team it's really really going to come down to the diving component to some degree and whether
109or not diving would remain you know if diving was something that wanted to continue in this particular facility then i think the the replacement option makes a lot of sense we felt like um just because of the fact that you're going to be digging up so much that pool as it is so at that point you start getting into you're replacing so much of it already that to dig it up and replace it within the existing facility would make a lot of sense i think would be the best value for the district forward if the decision was to not continue to have diving here at that point i think either looking at just the simple renovation you know to make sure you at least bring it up to current code compliance and so it can
110continue to function um at the base minimum and maybe looking at adding some of those improvements over time um would probably make more sense so i think those were the kind of i think the diving component was really the big piece that seemed to that we saw right off the bat um that really starts to make the difference between you know whether you just try and maintain what you have and up data or whether you completely you know overhaul the facility absent of uh diving itself does a replacement change the functionality of the pool the amount of lanes or anything like that or are you gonna have the replacement versus renovation okay i'm just the the mechanical guy but i've sat on the phone calls and maybe this would help the the reason mr crocker
111indicated that there's more work when you put the diving well in is right now the bottom of that pool slopes in from the sides and with the two diving boards those sides have to be basically turned to to straight vertical and there's a question as to whether or not the there were multiple different ways to build pools 60 years ago one was to take the walls all the way down and then create that sloped feature inside the pool and the other was i think what he said was to create the vertical walls and then not take the walls all the way down and then create that sloped feature inside the pool so that's the wide variance in cost that was discussed on the phone calls and then to your point one of the questions he
112had was um steve mentioned that sorry the difference in longevity between if we replace the pool or if we just modify the pool sure yeah and i'll get back to the so the the size we can talk about to be as far as we're replacing at that point i think yes the feeling was that's a that's a 30 50 year kind of fix whereas some replacement options or renovation options you might be talking 20 25 years and you still have to do some upgrades to the pool membranes and some of the other pool components i mean both are again obviously significant improvements to the current facility but there was some again if you start getting this in the case where you're making significant modifications to that pool the replacement is going to give you kind
113of a longer a longer life to the overall facility long term as far as the configuration of the pool again i think steve would could better assess this but from the conversations he had with our team um given the constraints of that existing facility um he did feel like potentially the the lanes on the side could be slightly wider but you're still going to be this the sixth lane it's not going to significantly change the configuration of your pool some things like the ladders he mentioned and making the ladders be recessed into the sides some things with the gutter design there's some ways to improve the the function and overall layout of that pool but in general you're not going to be able to uh significantly improve the configuration that pool without you know actually
114making the facility larger or something like that so it wouldn't necessarily make a big change with that as much as just you know you say bringing the existing pool up to a standard that would be consistent with with current swimming can't think of anything else to ask a lot information thank you thank you thank you any more district updates okay uh item 8.1 public comments we have five sheets here and now order uh rich newman good evening members of the board administration behind me free advice plus what you pay for free advice but after 25 years of working on sports facilities planning and renovations and new builds uh i can assure you that those numbers are low there's going to be surprises depending upon when and where you get your money you've got a discount
115factor in in terms of the time value of money and you also have turpin high school i'm sure is not far behind with respect to their pool um and i was struck by the fact when i was a.d at anderson 30 years ago we were dealing with some of these issues new pool would outlive the uh usefulness lifetime usefulness of anderson high school too but that's another conversation i really came here tonight not thinking i would say this because this is the first board meeting i've been to since the last one when i sat up there this really is about the students and the youth in our community and the volunteers who donate all our time it's staggering and elizabeth like you i was blown away by those young people from nagel and launching rockets
116uh the hope project is is just wonderful and and that's what this is all about not about political considerations it's not about i'm on the board i'm not on the board am i going to run for the board but i did come here tonight to encourage you and hopefully to congratulate you before the fact of approving the new policy for naming rights for school facilities and i didn't know i was going to get teed up by a couple million dollars worth of pool renovation or new build costs as sure as we're all in this room tonight school funding in the state of ohio is not going to get better it may some places but not in the community like we are with our demographics and socioeconomic levels we have to in order to provide our
117students the best opportunities to look for non-traditional ways to generate revenue and as i read this policy and i'll pull julie in front of the bus with me because we've obviously discussed it we can't figure out why anybody would vote against this your you as a board and all future boards still control what goes on you don't want to accept the check for 250 000 dollars from the shot foundation if that's what they give us and by the way they'll be making a decision if not yet this week in next month's meeting then don't accept it you don't want money from a family that wants to name something after uh existing or current employ the district when that person may merit it don't accept it but to simply turn your back on these kinds of
118things and i got the whole public education thing and forrest i know i have three minutes and i'm bumping up against the end of it but when you pick up the paper and you see purcell getting a million dollar gift or saint x getting a million dollar gift there are people in this community who want to do that for the forrest hills school district and this is an anecdotal and then i'll stop i'm working with rob fellows since the end of the year trying to raise money for rebranding and this isn't about the redskins right you know the raptors or anything but i can tell you for real there are people who want to help please don't throw any obstacles in front of them thank you thank you next up laura standage hello thank you
119for letting me speak tonight and thank you for all that you do especially this very difficult year that we've all been through i'm the mother of a junior and two freshmen and a seventh grader this year um i was recently thrilled to hear that the 2021 graduation ceremonies for turpin and anderson were being held that's amazing and that they were being held on a day other than sunday but when i checked the district's website i saw that next year's graduation date was going right back to sunday and my feelings went from being thrilled to be deflated the change that i had hoped for was just temporary um for our family we are god believing christians and sunday is our consecrated sabbath for our family trying to protect and maintain the sanctity of the sabbath has
120been more challenging in recent years as more and more social school and extracurricular activities are being scheduled on sundays however coaches teachers and other parents have been understanding and respectful of our family's religious beliefs and practices just as we've sought to be understanding and respectful of theirs consequently they've allowed our children to miss some sunday sports games or sunday school concerts and do makeup work instead or if a fellow school such as um yeah another high school is doing their concert on a weekday they've allowed our middle school student to join that choir rather than the one she was supposed to join that was doing theirs on a sunday so i've appreciated that here's my request that our board of education reconsider the practice of scheduling high school graduations on sunday instead of sunday please
121change the date of future graduation ceremonies to a weekday that does not conflict with our district's individuals and families religious beliefs and practices to respect and protect the beliefs and practices of those whose holy day is sunday saturday or even friday our graduations could be held monday through thursday in the afternoon or the evening no one should have to choose between breaking their sabbath or missing their own high school graduation or that of their child so please consider changing the dates of future high school graduations in our district so that they are not held on sundays mondays through thursdays would be preferable to respect and be inclusive of the religious beliefs and practices of all members of the forest hills school district community thank you for your time thank you very much next up barbara
122purcell hi there um so i wanted to take a minute as the year is winding down and speak as a parent in the virtual academy to really thank our teachers there and for my household that especially means the second grade team in the virtual academy um so that's mrs gerstel and mr beller and mrs spinney obviously the quality of the education and the engagement with the children is has been stellar um and uh for this particular age group of seven and eight year olds it's been particularly challenging keeping them on task where they're kind of not little kids anymore um but they maybe don't have the greatest impulse control yet um they've just gone above and beyond in the virtual academy classes with their small groups they have such great games they have these breakout
123sessions um but even more important that the teachers have created those points of connection which again for this age group has been almost in our household more important than academics another adult to be proud of them to tell them they're doing a good job to exclaim over their hundreds of stuffies or maybe that's just my kid um to admire the dogs and cats to talk about their siblings and to um be excited about their weekend activities so i just wanted to take that moment again as the year is winding down the virtual academy has had incredible challenges and has really risen to the occasion has been so um we're just so grateful in my household for that culture they've created so just wanted to say that thank you thank you last stop we have andrea
124granieri thank you i also wanted to thank teachers tonight next week is teacher appreciation week and i don't think that it is any coincidence the number of parent volunteers that we have had recognized tonight and the things that they have done for teacher appreciation i know that they do it because our teachers are phenomenal and i know that this year has been a real challenge and they deserve all the thanks and gratitude that we can possibly give them as parents and as leaders in the district i do thank the board and the administration and all the leaders principal leaders as well because certainly the teachers couldn't do it without their support i think that the pandemic has been handled about as well as possible but at the end of the day none of it is
125possible without our teachers and so it was just really important for me to come and make time tonight and say thank you to all of them thank you okay item 9.1 board discussion any topics that we bring up i do go ahead um i have two different things but since we have the naming rights kind of a thing i'll start with that um let's talk about why this came about so the board majority voted for changing the mascot at anderson without public funds they did not get enough public funds through the gofundme page so then they started to incentivize people to donate and now that's what this policy is about is they are incentivizing with um i have to now give you naming rights the difficulty i see with this policy is this people have
126given like tom you're sitting right there you raised money for different things over the years we did not have this going on this situation is different than prior ones so now we're in a situation where people want to give money but they want something in return so then you have to have a policy for it when this started mr prebbles wanted to have a an exception to the commemorative policy which does not apply and i said no it makes no sense if you want to do this you have to have a policy that's what's now on here when i saw that policy i said well it doesn't tell you what you're supposed to do hence the guidelines that's why i went over the guidelines last month it was to be determined and things were just
127not defined so again i asked how is this policy going to actually be executed i have somebody wants to give two hundred dollars i have someone that wants to give twenty thousand dollars you got what if you had two people with the same amount you can't name the same thing you have to have some sort of structure so you have equitable decision making the guidelines that has not happened and the reason i'm kind of getting hot about it is this is all because the board made a decision to move forward without a plan without the full community support because if they did get the support you would have gotten the money and now you have to do all this extra work to get the finances and now i go i'm a board member i did
128this because my goal is to continue the best education that we can afford we've heard a lot about of it what this policy now tells me as a board i'm going to sit there and manage fundraising i'm going to get people to say hey i'm going to give you x y and z but i want this and that mac i have to manage that program i don't see that as a board run program if people want to give money absolutely you want to give 250 000 dollars absolutely it's when you demo you want something in return and that we have to manage that where the problem comes in the other part is the value i mean you can name a classroom you can name all these different mrs taylor you are not supposed to have
129a discussion with the public commentary or with the this is my board you're directing your comments directly at him in regards to his public commentary that is the truth and what so you continue to censor me that's that's what your role is you get to censor me all the time and everyone else gets to watch this excuse me yes i would like to have my time to say my work my word you have the scene you don't have your time to say that but yeah rich you had your so the reason i have a problem is because you made a bad decision now you're making another decision because you have to manage the money that's it we have to move past this high school mascot and move forward we have to and we have to
130do what's best for our kids and we all know funding in ohio is not improving so what we are talking about is an innovative funding opportunity that we can say no no no no to everything that comes across our desk unless we have a board majority approving it you i've listened to you multiple times share false information about this for example two meetings ago you said they want to pass a policy that will allow people to say here's five dollars i'm going to let you have your name on a locker something to that effect that is not true we are talking about high dollar donations and the reality is if anyone in this community wants to donate hundred thousand dollars that's their money they get to say if they want it to go to whatever
131they want to and then it goes through the process that you have in your notes there's a seven step process now and we get to work through that and determine whether or not we want to save the taxpayers that kind of money by utilizing funds that we may choose to accept or may not choose to accept this is not a dictatorship this is a board with five people and a superintendent and you don't have to worry about recording me because it's on youtube like we you know i don't understand the recording because we see that happen uh it's it's that simple it's just a opportunity to consider innovative funding in a climate where we are challenged left and right this is not we're so hung up on this mascot it is a high school mascot
132when i got my master's degree they changed the name of the university and you know what we're all good i got my masters hanging on my wall i also have my phd that's hanging on my wall too and i'm not and they could change the mascot tomorrow and you know what it's still going to be there the reality is that this is an emotionally driven response and it is not about what is best financially for this district because again it is not just about this mascot we have got nine buildings nine and if you participated in any of the township um meetings that were held last week the number one thing that was shared that people loved the schools every night the schools we've got to keep it i mean we do have something special
133we saw we saw those eighth graders i know greg you saw me go like this like i was just like stop this is amazing we have a real opportunity to capitalize on this and turn the corner with finances holistically it's not about the mascot more broadly it makes sense so i'm i've been somewhere dancing around all of this discussion for about two months and we as a board obviously can't discuss outside of this and we abide by that very carefully and so i've individually talked to people and um i think uh what it comes down to is that it's the policy so policy is a pretty serious thing in public schools i mean i i it it the whole district abides by it so to create it or to take it away is a pretty
134big deal so i was as soon as you say create new policy i hear caution so what's happened over the course of the past two months is the subject came up and you know there were some board members on one side of it and some on the other and the administration actually worked really hard to work both sides of the board through it and so we created a process there's actually a flowchart now that incoming donations would go through it has to pass multiple levels of approval from facilities committee to um probably ads are on there and and then it finally goes to the board so the administrative guidelines that we have in place or that we are talking about will filter things that are not appropriate or going to offend people um and then
135there is the the process so i forget what they call that the process so i i was actually going to move that the policy be removed from the voting tonight and that we maybe not have a policy but we if we have people who bring revenue opportunities to us we certainly consider them we just did that with seven hills and it was a wonderful opportunity for anderson high school and the district as a whole so i think i think it's caused a lot of emotion because it's naming and it was attached to an emotional issue the truth is it stirred up interest in something that we should consider moving forward but it really isn't about that it it really is not um and so i was not comfortable voting for a policy in this situation
136to incendiary no reason for that so it's it's not blocking it it is just saying there's other ways to accomplish this i mean when we can discuss this if leslie you're the only one i didn't talk to about that but um do you want it well for me it was the the the having a framework to you know to provide an opportunity for people to bring something whether it's a naming or it's a uh for a you know for the rebranding or if it's for a baseball field or it's for the swimming pool or it's something or i mean seven hills this was based upon the seven hills now i don't have the visceral uh concern about policy i mean it's a very broad policy but basically the the the elements of or the framework
137is in the guidelines as is what you go through to get things accomplished and that was actually grown organically through our seven hills program or what came through with seven hills which has been a wonderful thing and will be a a wonderful thing for uh for titus auditorium at anderson so whether it's a policy or not a policy i mean you know as you said it's it's wrapped up in a lot of emotion what i really appreciate is the the work that went into to take what happened with the seven hills program take the the particulars out and then provide a framework so that if and when someone wants to come and do something for the students of our district we have a way of getting that done that is that there's a structural framework
138so that if someone here has a million dollars and they want to do something there is a way and there is a process that goes through two meetings that allows the board and the community to be involved with it and we get to a and it's not a spur of the moment thing but other than these big decisions shouldn't be spur of the moment things there was a lot of negotiation that went into seven hills to get to where we were or where we are now uh it's very different than it was when it came up and this so we took that and made this framework so yeah whether there's a over overarching umbrella policy that that does that or if we just use that administrative guidelines as a framework still getting the job done
139of course what i don't understand is seven hills i went through that with you we met with them we came up with a contract you know expanded on it and solidified it that's a contract for a specific situation we had the terms we all agreed on it two parties we both had benefits from it right this is not the same situation could be yeah so if somebody came i mean i was just trying to look up the schedule you can give up to 250 to get something i'm not wasting my time on that you just give it if you want to give it to the district you knock yourself out and you get it that's wonderful we'll take it it's when you put conditions on it if you're going to give a million dollars we're
140going to have a contract we're going to go through a process but we do go through a process what listings are supposed to go through our own analytical process to come to conclusions that's not really what happens here some of us do and some of us do not mrs taylor what list do you have that gives a figure i was looking up rob's schedule where he has if you give x y and z then you can name these things the naming okay and then correspondence from here understand now i know collaterals now i understand where the document came from but in correspondence from me and bill malvahl who is the person who is the consultant i said that list that you are reading from should not be used it limits the board's ability to negotiate
141100 agreement with you however there is no it's a broad direction that you have there there are no conditions is anything goes and the point is this why am i as a board member now addressing these kinds of things what other schools here in ohio what other public schools in ohio have a policy like this i don't know that but i can tell you this during the process with seven and hills i said to you on many occasions that i am appreciative for your participation in this and i think what ultimately resulted was a good thing for the school district and at the beginning of this process yes you are correct i said we could use the exempt in the other policy because i never believed we needed a policy and in my last correspondence
142to the board in a recent board information update i said after reviewing this entire process i still don't know why it's necessary to have a board policy why are we sitting here because what well that's that's a good question but because what you're suggesting is exactly what you and i and forrest and other members of this board did to solidify one of the best contracts with an organization utilizing school property in hamilton county your work on that was phenomenal that's what i would like to have an opportunity to do here and with all due respect your questions to me over these months were be more specific scott be more specific be more specific so i continued to add specificity and it did not meet not only yours that's not fair but other board members on
143this deus it did not meet their expectations which is fine that is my responsibility so the goal of the superintendent is to continue to provide information opportunity collect guidance and ultimately get to the decision that is in the best interest of the students i believe we can do this with the guidelines available now in a process similar to the one that you helped guide the last time we were together i think that would be good for the school district i think that would be good for students and as far as managing money and managing all that those are questions that you had in the seven hills agreement that we have been able to work out administratively to meet the needs of the board that's the guidance that i need to be able to do what
144we're trying to do today which is develop innovative ways to take burden off the local taxpayer so i agree with you but i don't necessarily see the sequence the same way that you do sequence of events we're sitting here today to do this policy because you need money to do the naming change i mean that's what we're really trying to do today i don't know we're going to reject every other opportunity because they didn't get help sherwood that could help maddox that could help turpin because we're hung up on the mascot at one one school of friends we have nine schools one and i think we probably should have a conversation in this board discussion about some of the language that has been used and continues to be used for example just last week in
145the email miss mrs taylor felt it was appropriate to say shame on you to her colleague over something she didn't like you just finished saying that i tried to censor you and look at all the videos i don't even we don't even speak and then you go and talk over mr prebbles again you tell him shame on you i i mean i am ashamed of this board in a lot of different ways did you give taxpayers 4 with some frivolous little little petty emotional um claim that you made against me i haven't admitted here i i did find harassment against your fellow board members july 24th if you're interested you can do a records request and it has been consistent and i am saying no more no ma'am i have not spoken with you or
146anything what i understand is that what you drafted out is your litmus for how we should treat people and therefore i'm asking you to think about that and to please consider the way you speak to our superintendent to the rest of us the emails the everything we we don't talk about this i don't try to censor you i don't even speak to you really except when we are right here doctor the truth doctor may i ask a question please the the conversation that i'd like to ask the board absent of a consensus on whether or not there should be a policy when i which i'm gathering there isn't necessarily consensus for a policy is the draft of the administrative guideline process which is inclusive of some of the commentary or some of the things that
147came out of the process in seven hills worthy of this board's discussion to determine whether or not it finds that to be a process that they would like the administration to work with it on to be able to address issues like this one so what the board has is a series of questions a series of documented activities that need to take place not necessary that's not necessarily a policy but even if the board had a policy in place these same things which are currently offered as guidelines would be done anyway so if this series of questions this series of activities that leads us to a conclusion on these items is acceptable by a majority or the board hopefully all then we can start working on this and we can work through any negotiation i believe
148because it is committee oriented which is exactly policy of the board approved at the january meeting with board representation to talk with anyone who would have interest in a naming request request of the board and then take it through the process just like we would do in finance or in policy or in facilities and it would come through the board and the board makes the final determination as to whether or not it moves to the next step not the superintendent but the board and its committee and so if we could coalesce around addressing that at this particular time i think that would be a good place for us to be in this discussion board that sounds good um could you maybe resend the most recent version of the administrative guidelines and that flow chart so
149there's well we actually made the flowchart the process so it's really really now down to great yeah seven events that need to take place certainly with documentation dates times signatures so forth and so on and it would be it is very much reflective of the process that we use for seven hills and that would i mean given all the commentary that's taking place tonight staying focused on because i think that there are individuals in our school district who either would like to participate in something like this or who would like to know that they could go ask someone who might want to participate not regarding anderson high school but we just saw a 2.5 million dollar figure up there and there might be someone in our community who has interest in talking with the board
150about helping with that process we saw it in sycamore we saw it at saint x we see it at ursula maybe if there was a opportunistic view on that there might be someone come step up in our community beyond where we are today absent of anderson high school's mascot let me just add we had a meeting the policy committee so that was leslie myself and scott not once did we mention the mascot not one time that wasn't even in the discussion it had nothing to do with the policy all we talked about was the process and and we came up with a policy but it has nothing nothing to do with the mascot and and i think that it's just kind of stuck stuck with you but that that's not what that's not what we
151did that's not what we discussed well i maintain what i said before if i have somebody coming to give me three million dollars for a pool absolutely we're going to talk about it we're going to hash it out we're going to come up with a contract i don't need those steps i already know those steps my understanding is you need you want that put in place so that everyone else follows those steps that's what i'm trying to say is you're trying to create a process but if somebody comes we're absolutely going to entertain it but three you're not going to have 10 people come up with the same deal you're just not they're all individual deals they all don't have the same merit we're talking about materiality here and the and the process includes things
152like a legal review of the contract but that's understanded you would have to do that you do that already well but yes beyond the table and beyond the board's representation we have a very interested and concerned community who likes to see these types of processes in place they don't want to have the superintendent and the board operating outside of some consistent way to manage these things because that has been a criticism of not only this board this school district but others that i have worked in so yes i agree with you that you have a clear understanding of contact contract development you've done it already and you've been successful at it with this school in in seven hills however i think that for those that maybe aren't as well versed in this or who maybe
153will need a guide in five seven nine years it would be nice that we're following a consistent methodology in our school district not discounting what you're saying i'm agreeing with it but i hope that you would appreciate my comments about having something that is consistent that's that's it not forceful not creating you know and i i have a a a another topic that kind of if you're trying to be consistent right and you want to be um forthcoming with the community it was back in march and i asked you i said hey i hear that we're changing terminology usage right in the schools and we had um the mercer principal gave me an explanation and she said and i would have to go find it but basically we don't have a policy but it's like
154the cares team and that the teachers meet maybe in professional development and they figure out with this one degree shift how to make terminology changes so that people feel inclusive and i've been thinking about that i've had other people mention it to me where are all those changes if if we're trying to do exactly what you said have clear documentation provide this to our community why aren't we doing it for all those things too i mean i really have a concern about are we changing things in the classroom are the teachers changing it through the cares program through the hamilton hamilton county esc and i don't know about it as a parent where can i find all of that information we're having professional conversations right now in diversity belonging inclusion and equity in our classrooms
155who is having that conversation our entire school system we have a board member former vice president who was on the care team we have community members students building teams and advisory council who have all been involved in the diversity belonging inclusion and equity work that we are doing and so what that work is about in the diversity part is understanding who our students and who our staff are their backgrounds their ethnicity their religion their race so forth and so on the belonging part that our district is sort of in right now is creating an ongoing culture that's created to have all people feel welcome so what does that mean what we want our teachers to be responsive to which is exactly what kind of was at mercer very possible that a student in a classroom
156goes home to a parent where there are two moms and there's not a father or there is another situation in that child's life that's important to be able to connect to to understand as a teacher so you can meet them where they are and have them feel be belonging in your classroom simple as this and you may say that's very simple but here's a simple example i want all students to report to the cafeteria to purchase your seventy five dollar prom ticket and that's over the entire loud speaker in the entire building absent of the thought that there may be 10 to 15 students in a forest hills high school that don't have that 75 dollars who all of a sudden feel i'm an outsider now because socioeconomically i can't afford that and all my
157friends with excitement and and enthusiasm go to the gymnasium to pick up their tickets but i'm an outcast because i don't have that money and the whole purpose mrs taylor is to try to find ways so that the teachers know who those children are all children all situations so that we don't as an organization create circumstances that put any of our children in a situation where they don't feel like they belong that's the work that we're involved in we're not manipulating language we're not forcing kids or teachers to do anything that is outside of what makes them feel comfortable it's the very discussion that a person came to the podium to talk about tonight please consider my religion when you're making decisions about dates that's important she needs to believe that she's heard that she
158belongs that she's part of our community that's what this work is about and we should not we should not think that it's dubious and and done with mouth with with disingenuous intent that is not the purpose after belonging you get into inclusion diverse populations are involved in the decision-making in your schools not just the dominant students who live in your community but all of the students decide when the prom is what time the football game not starts but what activities we do at halftime at the football game and then the ultimate goal in this entire process is equity that's where we're going for equity changing structures and disciplines and arrangements in our school so that everybody has an equal opportunity to learn to grow and to be comfortable in this environment that's what's happening at
159mercer air and every other building that we have so my follow-up question is when these changes occur shouldn't they be posted out there so parents know that they're happening it's in our strategic vision i understand that but i needed to be explicit i did not know that you were changing certain terms we haven't changed like well yes you did we're res we are responding to the children in our classroom by i understand that but when my kids come home and they say this is how it's phrased now i go well how do i not know that well as a parent i would really like to know that your answer is changing terminology i think that would be all right to know i think it's as simple as posting it out there they have weekly uh
160principal emails i think we need to know these things mr problems but again it would be the avoidance it would be the avoidance of terms not changing terms okay so that's fine i think i as a parent i still should know that you're doing that well i would say that there's a general understanding by parents of what's happening with our pbis program with the students who spoke today with other emotionally charged programs that we have or wellness programs that we have i think there's a general understanding of that just like there's a general understanding that in fourth grade the science standards are being delivered to students and the specif the specifics of that are not known to every individual parent and that's not going to be able to happen there's a there's a there's an
161agreement that takes place between a parent and a school system and understanding that we're here for goodwill for growth for social emotional positive intent um and when that does not happen we go in there and we investigate we we adjust we learn and we move on can i speak yes please some members of our community decided to select a black woman who was a consultant for this district to harass by calling her job they called for her they made open records request they requested her personnel information they sent her emails and all her job was to do was to work for the district with teachers and administrators discussing diversity inclusion inclusion and unconscious bias i attended a lot of those sessions and she's good at what she does and i think that's what mr prebbles
162was talking about but out of all the employees working for our school district a group of people selected a black female a black woman to harass it's unacceptable it's offensive it's wrong and it's offensive to me as a black woman she has done nothing to deserve the type of treatment she's gotten and i'm asking members of the community be considerate be kind and be thoughtful and part of what she does or and i don't know if she's still doing it or not but it's about equity diversity and kids and and even teachers getting to know a little bit more about those things we had that zoom call with the um concert trustee and most of the people said they needed to know more about diversity they wanted to see more diversity in the school district
163but yet we've got people harassing black women it's ridiculous i would like to add that i spoke with that woman she found me through my employer in a contact and reached out to me and told me that due to the harassment she has received from these three individuals in our community she has their names i have heard their names that she is scared for her safety so these three individuals have gone this extra step it's not even inquiring it's now oh i'm going to go ahead and call your boss i'm going to start emailing and asking about critical race theory she understands exactly what's happening but the point is this black woman who is doing nothing but trying to help our community is being she's scared she's afraid for her little kids it's ridiculous because
164of this it has to stop there are these are adults that are doing this and i'm not going to mince words here would you single out the black woman who is teaching and training about diversity inclusion you know what that tells me her work here is so important what she's doing here needs to be here there's no there's no nefarious anything happening this is something that came out in the township meetings three of them that happened last week it was top of the list for everyone this isn't this isn't first of all this isn't high school we're everybody are these are adults harassing this woman and there are shades of racism all over it and i will go to sleep tonight and say a prayer for her because she was in tears on the phone
165with me today concerned about these three individuals are they going to find out where i live she said that to me if that does not rock you at your core i i don't know what will um that is real fear in a woman a black woman in our community who's not just trying to do her job that's it and is that what we want for our school district for our children i certainly don't it's ridiculous we shouldn't even have to have this conversation i don't know anything about that all i want as a parent is i want to know when things are changing in my school that's all i'm asking for is information when things change so that i'm aware of them so you do support the work of the care team well you need
166to define what parts all of it everything well i i i don't know i mean i don't have put it this way i am for every student getting a quality education if you are top of your class and you need to be challenged i want you to have rigor in classes if you are middle you need to get what you get if you need help i want you to get all the help you can get i don't qualify anything i just want every student to have what they deserve we do offer a lot i was going through the like 138 page course offerings we offer a lot to our students i mean i've got a lot of criticism criticisms but we do have a lot of good things going on in our district you have
167a lot of opportunity that's what i'm asking for i just want to know when things change i think i have a right to know when things change but i mean again i have been in this district my kids went from first to 12th i've never and i've been on many different uh ptas you know committees doing things no one ever qualifies hey we're going to do this but only for these certain kids or we're going to do this it's never that it's what do we do for this grade what do we do for this group you know we're always trying to figure out the best way to give them opportunity it's never qualified i don't have any problem offering equal opportunity to the people that need it mr prebbles um has it been a little
168while since we've had an update on care i'm trying to remember the last time it was presented in the same way that some of the stuff was tonight could we could we maybe put that on for the next month or two just to update the board and the community on what's happening maybe that's a proactive way to talk about this a proactive way to do what well just to share what's what what cares is doing because frankly i was getting peppered with questions about this for the past two weeks and i could i didn't know i didn't even know this woman's name i was pronouncing it incorrectly so it led me to ask mr preble some questions just about what's happening with care because i remember when it was first started and thinking it was
169wonderful because we don't have anything like that so maybe a good thing to do would be let's talk about what care is actually doing it can dispel some of these rumors apparently in all my years of education yeah and i've got some people in here that know my background in education i have never had anybody do this because somebody was having discussions about inclusion diversity and unconscious bias never and it's embarrassing to me so it sounds like there's some misunderstanding and that is more than that i know well and misunderstanding can lead to actions that are not appropriate so i think the best thing to do is to foster understanding and um you know i i asked point blank some of the questions that were being asked of me and i got answers um and
170i think it just needs to be presented are you okay with that yeah i think it sounds like a good idea i think why don't we do that in the next the next month or two to get an update i had two more things hopefully they're very quick the galapagos trip can you just clarify for me the information i read that the galapagos trip for the students was cancelled and it is going going around and around it who specifically canceled it because the board did not cancel it i didn't even know about there was a i didn't even know that it was up for discussion so can you explain specifically who did and were the parents involved in the conversation for making a decision so this is a document sent to you hi patty conversations
171with ea ef led to the meeting where donald lauber and betsy ryan informed chaperones that trips to ecuador costa rica europe and peru should be postponed not cancelled the decision was made in the best interest of student and staff health and safety because the center for disease control travel advisory warning was at level three which indicates reconsider travel remember this is to you if you can remember when your daughter linda traveled internationally there were many communications sent and conversations held most of which probably involved donna and or betsy depending on the level of importance expectations of the board when it is approved the only time i have ever been involved in an itinerary adjustment is when we had students visiting paris when notre dame caught fire the teacher involved in the galapagos trip for whatever
172reason misunderstood and informed parents that the board decided to cancel incorrect on both counts she's a nice lady and things like this happen she was disappointed and that emotion showed in her correspondence all other information sent to parents that i have read of the district's other trips based on the same meeting with donna and betsy includes the term postpone at this moment the cdc travel advisory warning for ecuador is level four avoid all travel this is consistent with level four advisories associated with all other current postponements we should not send students to these locations because the cdc advises not to do so not donna betsy or ef at present 167 june through july forest hill school district travelers have been advised that the trip was postponed we've contacted digitally as well as made personal phone
173calls and conducted individual meetings with parents upon request to convey the rationale for these postponements at this point two parents have informed us that they want to participate in a follow-up conversation no one is happy that covet 19 has caused this situation donna and betsy continue to work with ef the u.s state department and cdc to help guide decisions and to ensure reschedules not cancellations occur to protect students and to avoid loss of funds thank you for taking the time to better understand the process so i would respond after having written that to you that we work very closely with the parents and the students to make decisions and although there were parents who were concerned that their children were not going to the galapagos islands there was a host of parents who said i'm
174not sending my child to the galapagos islands under a level 3 travel advisory and i'm hoping that the school would not endorse something like that it was a misunderstanding a misrepresentation i apologize to you that that happened and other board members and that we would have follow-up conversations with that and so that's how that took place and just like your comments from earlier about all the things that take place that the board is just not so closely involved in this is another situation where we at the administrative offices or at the board level we recommend the approvals based on all of the a sequence of series of things that have to be insured with legal and with ef and so forth and then we leave that to the students and the parents because things happen
175to my knowledge the school district has never to my knowledge has never canceled any trip they have postponed so that we can avoid having our parents lose their 350 dollar fee now there's a 165 dollar i think insurance policy which you know if if something like that happen we all buy insurance policies so that you only pay 165 not the full 2600 or you only pay whatever you did for your flight tickets so you don't whatever that might be but that's how it came about and we are currently still in conversations with those parents and to be very specific about this when you say why weren't parents informed i need to remind you in everything not informed but part of the conversation as these things were being discussed and evaluated but it was a level
176three travel advisory and parents were to be informed that things were going to be canceled or to be postponed not cancelled and that starts the discussion because what happened prior to even any of this was don it was mrs laver working with ef to try to ensure that we could postpone these that we wouldn't lose money that kids would have another opportunity to reschedule there's also an opportunity for any student who is not happy with the decision to be able to directly work with ef to go on that journey themselves i did not say this happened perfectly but i also would say that it was not something that was communicated in a way that positioned it good for the conversations that you expect and that should happen the last thing i wanted to bring up
177uh during the board discussion part is um i had atalanta like all the the covid federal estate dollars that we got how are they used the budget and usage and i did get that information and i it was a lot to go through but what i think i can conclude and i'm asking for confirmation is that we actually got enough money to cover our covert related experience so we lost money but from the state we had additional expenses but we did get federal dollars to cover at least that's how i interpreted the information that came is that true or not true our covet expenses are not over so that's going to be hard to determine and i know that's probably a bit a question better for um atlanta but we're still talking to the hamilton
178county esc right now about three foot spaces we're still concerned about 900 students who are currently in virtual education coming back to the school how will we keep them three foot apart what materials will we need what furniture will we need we we're not out of the covid days yet you are correct in your analysis we've received a lot of money um however i would remind all of us including me because i get excited when i see big checks coming into the district that there is still some covid expenses that are going to be out there extended services that we've talked about there's a lot of expenses that are that are still to be identified with our covid resources the reason i did that request was just basically get a a financial health check where
179are we with it and that kind of stuff so we are not i mean we are not we were very fortunate that we were able to at least at this point cover everything plus you're absolutely right all right that's all i wanted to know well i think you know there's no doubt that um should we get and there's no indication that we won't the 5.3 million in the recently passed sr3 should we get that there's no doubt that that is going to add some stability to our general fund balance but whether or not it would push the levy to another year does remain to be seen exactly for all the reasons that mr previls just stated we're not exactly through the pandemic yet what additional expenditures that we may have from that remains to be
180seen we're early in the state budget process we're not quite sure what are what we will get coming out of the next biennial budget and we probably won't know that till june and i think one of the most important things that as the board begins their work towards finance finalizing a levy date and millage is you have there's so much information that you have to look at and able to come to a decision for the district for the future that's a really good time to take a look at your course offerings your programs and services you want to look at what you are offering or maybe there's should should we make some changes there what are employers and colleges asking for have they changed their requirements if so is that going to cause some changes
181in our programs and services and what's the financial implication of that um there's just so many unknowns and so many things that you need to look at when you when you go to decide that we're still early in the in the process like i said we need to let our revenues and our expenditures play out a little bit more and keep an eye on it to date our revenue loss was like 3.5 million due to the pandemic to date we have used covet funds to recover 2.4 of that that leaves a delta still of 1.1 million that we're hoping to use the sr3 dollars for we are waiting on the s or three dollars we hear that there are going to be some requirements for the use of those funds and we don't know what
182those are quite going to be yet the application is due to come out the the first of may so again an unknown that we don't really know at this stage but we are keeping a close eye on it and we are um encouraged over the yester funds that we got i think one of the things in being a an accounting nerd so to speak is i look at some of the things that we we see in the esser dollars and because of the wealth of our community while we have gotten some esser dollars there are school districts that will be offering programs and services that have gotten four times what we've gotten so in those school districts their revenue cuts were a quarter of what ours were so from the standpoint of our financial power
183in terms of offering services and programs we still have that delta between what's going on in in other school districts within the county so that was a long-winded way to say that there's still a lot of unknowns that we need to check thank you i have one more board discussion okay well because you can't not bring up the pool i mean i i thought that was going to be the first thing that came up um so i was praising those eighth graders for learning problem-solving skills yo we got to solve a problem um i i sent patty an email a couple weeks ago like brainstorming some ideas on what i thought could be next i'll probably individually send it to each of you so that you can see just the thought process the only reason
184my thoughts are pretty organized on it is because i was on that township committee that was looking for private options so maybe i'll throw it out there get everyone's thoughts moving and then we're going to have to sit down and talk about this this cannot be pushed down the road anymore and those are some serious numbers and we have a swim season that's coming soon so we have to make some decisions is that okay yeah you have the most experience in looking at uh uh other options as well and there are potential other things out there as well that are are developing but then it's a it's a timing issue as well so that's you know timing and money and and uh and then what was what's best long term so well i think that's
185the thing is we're gonna have to set a long-term vision where do we wanna be in 10 20 years and then the decisions that we make today will be informed by that that's really hard to do but we have to because the number that we saw to renovate anderson even at the bare minimum will be turpin in about 10 years so then you'd have that and so anyway um i just wanted to see if that's okay if we proceed that way and then i'm happy to work with with scott and mike to figure out what's next yep and then we'll get we'll get more information it sounded like as well got more details this was a lot of information just today so that'll be worth coming so yeah dr heiss i have a um care
186information update that came in a correspondence from me to the board members that i will send again to all board members it talks about our care information um and it gives uh three pages of what we have done are doing and intend to do and so i think what i'll do if it's okay with members of the board is i'll use that as sort of the development of a plan to come back here the next month and we'll review our care planning so that's that's a something that we can make happen at the next meeting if you're okay with that sounds good um and then i know it was a a long discussion that kind of got lost how would the board like for its administration to proceed regarding a process or policy or neither
187or um individuals who have interest in donating funds and with potential name recognition involved well as i brought that up we're going to address that in the policy section of our meeting which will be within the hour hour um all right item 10. uh we'll go to business operations now with mike broadwater thank you i want to first publicly say thank you to mr patek mr young for being here with the full investigation and i will tell the board as soon as i get the final report i'll make sure it gets into your hands as quickly as possible under business operations we have three items 10.1 is the senior exception residency waiver charles and hope hortsman and rachel hughes the request is for the approval of residency waivers for charles hortman and hope portsmouth seniors
188at anderson high school and rachel hughes senior at turpin high school for the remainder of the 2020 2021 school year per board policy 511 if a student is a senior in high school and his or her parents move out of the school district after the commencement of classes the student may continue to attend in the district for the remainder of the school year subject to the approval of the board of education the superintendent recommends the board approve residency waivers for charles and ho portsmouth and rachel hughes for the remainder of the 20 20 21 school year item 10.2 is the district academic calendar for 2021 and 2022. it is additions to the calendar that had already been board approved previously where the addition of the phase-in dates are included as well as the remote learning
189days may be considered after the fifth calamity day that verbiage was added as well so the superintendent recommends the board approved the additions to the 2021 2022 district academic calendar as shown in the attachment item 10.3 is the bid opening for the mercer walk-in and freezer replacement project it is being recommended that the board approve the resolution to award a construction contract related to the mercer es walk-in and freezer replacement project and bids were opened in red on wednesday april 14 2021 for the mercer elementary school walk-in and freezer replacement project and cnt design and equipment company incorporated is being recommended to be approved by the board and awarding a construction contract related to the mercer elementary school walk-in and freezer replacement project to cnt designed an equipment company incorporated who was the lowest bidder
190as shown in the attachments provided and that i would remind you that this is paid strictly out of the food service it does not affect the general fund whatsoever that's paid out your food services any questions in business ops okay we will move on to human resources and the first item i would rather not do so i'm going to turn it over to mr prebbles and let him do that one i think it has to do with the retirement susan monk will be retiring from the school district susan has been with the district for several years in 1994 she started as a secretary substitute in 1995 she was a health aide substitute in 96 a full-time secretary for early childhood 99 administrative assistant to the first principal mike stable at nagel middle school in 2002
191uh through 2016 she was an administrative assistant to john patzwell superintendent followed by dallas jackson and then tob durbin in 2016 mrs monks started her toughest gig i see that's when susan began working with me uh even before my official first day on the job i could tell i was going to be working with an extremely professional incompetent colleague and during our six years together she proved time and time again that she is a consummate professional as a matter of fact susan monk is the best administrative assistant i have ever worked for always prepared always kind always composed always effective susan is the type of colleague every co-worker appreciates she is dependable resourceful flexible and helpful susan demonstrates care in her work and always rises to the occasion with a needed smile a much needed
192funny statement and even a hug when it's appropriate susan provides leadership stability and demonstrates an abundance of knowledge regarding department building and district operations additionally and most important is that susan serves as an assistant to the board of education she organizes and posts the board's calendar the board's agenda and all of its special monthly and yearly meetings and activities susan also manages the process to re review revise to add new and to delete policies of the board and this is a monumental task that mrs monk performs with perfection susan will complete her 26th year and retire on september 1st there are a few other people and i know the meeting is long but i think this is important some other folks said some things about her susan is a team player and always willing to
193help out anyone in need she has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to our district anytime i call regardless of how busy she is she takes time to answer any questions i have with a friendly disposition another rights over the past 16 years susan monk has been a person i can always call and ask a question and she is ready to help either she has the answer for me or refined it mike broadwater wrote susan monk is such a positive caring person who always greets me with a smile even when she is busy correcting my mistakes as i steal mints from her desk another person wrote susan is the backbone of forest hills school district she's been nothing but a constant supporter to the board administration teachers staff and students i've had the pleasure
194of working with her for over 20 years and watched her work with difficult situations and challenges with dignity and kindness that is a standard we should all learn and imitate in the years ahead and susan i'll read these to you tomorrow there's more many many comments because we are the hours getting late and i wrote at the bottom here i could go on all evening about the dedication the thoughtfulness and the real passion that susan brings to her work and so basically i would think i would just feel best if i said thank you very much you are a great superintendent and i have enjoyed working with you all this time i have a special thing for you while mike goes into his next report [Applause] mr monk i will miss you very very much
195and uh just a reminder the board has not approved it yet so hold on to that photo the only thing i want to say about susan though the year and a half almost i've been here everything you've said is absolutely true you've been nothing but uh exceptional congratulations further i've now worked with four superintendents and every single one of them within especially the new ones came in within a month and said wow this is this is i said i know no no no you don't underst she's really good every single one of them every single one of them so i mean as as president obviously we have a very good relationship and i you're going to be sorely missed sorely best uh next on the agenda we also have some other retirements namely mary eichert

197be our head custodian at mercer replacing gary conway and thanks to jody davidson and larry corley for one running that process and getting the absolute best person in there for that staff also under the hr report we are working through staffing for next year and as we do that we are looking at internal candidates for reading specialist jobs therefore it's appropriate that we would update that job description which mr buck has done so it's item m and you'll see the job description in there and other than that since the regular board meeting of march 15 2021 staffing has remained at 779 ftes please see the fte worksheet for reconciliation the superintendent recommends that the board approve the personnel items as listed right thank you moving on to technology uh 12.1 steve good evening everyone we
198have two items under technology this evening item 12.1 the spectrum dark fiber license agreement renewal this is the agreement for the connectivity between all the buildings within the district this contracts for renewal of the dark fiber license agreement to be provided by spectrum for the next five years again this is the connectivity that provides our um all of our buildings connectivity to the buildings and out to the internet any questions about that superintendent the superintendent recommends the board approve the dark fiber license agreement as shown in the attachments item 12.2 lenovo lease agreement the attached contract is for the lease agreement with lenovo for chromebooks for the one-to-one technology model for the next four years this lease agreement is for the district to acquire new chromebooks though this term is for four years there are
199four annual payments with a one dollar buyout at the conclusion of the contract this was presented to the tech in the technology sustainability plan presented to the members of the board on february twenty second twenty twenty one the purchase of this chromebook equipment fulfills entry point implementation in grades 5 and 9 as described and approved by the board any questions the superintendent recommends the board approve the lenovo lease agreement and addendum as shown in the attachments thank you item 13.1 tip resolution for the village of newtown this is a request from the village of newtown for the board to approve a tax increment or tip agreement and the corresponding district compensation agreement the project is for an expansion of the moats group which is located on church street in the village the village is requesting
20030 years 100 percent tiff the village is also planning to layer the tiff with a community reinvestment area agreement or cra the tiff and the cra will run consecutively under the proposal we will receive 50 of the taxes due to the improvements for the first 10 years and then for the next 20 years the district will receive a service payment and the amount of total taxes we would have received if not for the tif at our current commercial millage rate the agreement will net the board approximately 42 thousand in years one through 10 and 84 000 in years 10 through 30. i'm sorry here's 11 through 30. um these documents have been reviewed by our board attorney and he has indicated that all documents are in compliance with the ohio revised code any questions just
201a clarification that we've had these discussions with anderson township about different properties the way the tiff works is that you can have there is a statutory requirement that if you do 50 of the improved value for 10 years that that while we are agreeing to it we don't get a choice it's a it's it's statutory that way if they want to do more than that more than or longer than 10 years then then there's a negotiations but here it's it's just letting everyone know that they're doing it but they we don't have a say by law okay yeah that's correct that is the the ohio revised codes allows them to pass both the tip and the cra without board approval um we we are um pleased that they came to us uh with the proposal
202though i like to have the district compensation agreement even though it is code it's nice to have the procedures laid out and approved by both parties okay next item uh next agenda item 13.2 this is the annual resolution to accept the amounts and tax rates as determined by the hamilton county budget commission this is a resolution prepared by the budget commission it is their certification to us of the voted tax rates and dollar amount raised by each of our levies by passing this resolution we are accepting their calculation and certifying to them that we do need these taxes in order to operate the authoritative source for this action is the ohio revised code section 5705.34 i asked one year if we didn't approve it what would happen and they said we wouldn't get any money
203yeah kind of a no-brainer here yes all right next item 13.3 um item a presents a long list of donors whose gifts totaled just under 120 000 over the last month as always we are appreciative of these gifts that supplement our programs item b is the cash activity statement which presents all revenues and expenditures and board funds through march 31st item c presents the general fund our five-year forecast receipts for the month in the fiscal year to date march 31st items d and e present the expenditures in the general fund for the month in the fiscal year to date as we talk about every month expenditures in the general fund are stable throughout the year and with 75 percent of our fiscal year complete at the end of march we have spent 72 percent of
204our appropriations which with an additional 3.5 percent encumbered so spending is tracking exactly where we would expect at the end of march the bank reconciliations are presented in agenda items f and g appropriation adjustment details presented in agenda item h and the anderson high school logo re rebranding fund details presented in item i i respectfully request that the board approve items 13.1 through 13.3 i as part of the consent motion containing items 10.1 through 13 point i get a motion to approve consent items 10.1 through 13.3 so moved second second ms cropper miss choice yes mrs taylor yes mrs meyer yes dr yes dr heiss yes okay moving on to reports to the board of education our different committees uh we uh we'll start by saying we have our weekly meeting with the township uh

207on may 8th well you can do it anytime it's virtual but the packet pickup or the t-shirt and the metal pickup is may 8th from 9 to 12 outside of the district office so that's it thank you i'd like to thank dee for all that she's done for forest hills foundation it has been a great run finance committee meeting no meetings since the last board meeting all right human resources committee no meeting yeah i think we have a spring break legislative liaison report uh scott mentioned uh before that he's going up to testify there was a uh the biggest thing going on is that they actually passed house bill 110 which included house bill one the fair funding act through the house so that was a major accomplishment now it's to the senate there's still
208a lot that can happen but uh but appreciate all the work that has gone in and it's it's moving it's closer than it ever has been so uh now policy committee report second reading so we met march 11 to review the policy revisions from niola volume 39 number two non-discrimination anti-harassment policy updates um it's an edgar revision if that matters to you and you can see they are attached there so we're bringing them to the board for a second reading and i suppose with the naming recognition situation if the consensus is that they you know we prefer not to have the actual policy but we have the guidelines and that step-by-step process um you know we can we can discuss that i personally don't think there's a problem with that i think we'll still have
209the guideline to go through the process and and we'll be able to evaluate any any potential thing that comes our way so we need to we need to vote on that so do we have a motion to adopt the sorry the policies short of the naming recognition opportunities with the uh you're excluding that one excluding that one okay and uh uh with appreciation for the uh administrative guidelines can you get a motion uh i'd like to make a motion do i make candidates i'll make a motion to approve the changes to the policies as presented second second all right mr cropper dr rasmussen yes his choice yes mrs meyer yes mrs taylor yes excluding the naming rights dr heist yes 14.7 policy committee reading report first reading sorry we reviewed these policies at our meeting
210back on march 11th and then we revisited them april 12th as well um and i mean there's nothing here other than an update that we had to legally do the neola updates okay so first reading so we'll we'll go back to those next month yes we'll have a second reading and request approval for these two at the may 24th regular board meeting okay safety committee report no we've not met teaching a learning committee report we tried pretty hard to find a time and we couldn't technology and facilities committee report we have not met since our last meeting and the forest hills teacher association report donna wrote in that there was not a report this week so before we go to executive session and let all of you leave our next regular meeting of the board
